Desperate women, who perfected their plans to beat narcotic officials at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos to smuggle cocaine overseas, are now being detained at the NAHCO office of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Their illegal consignment weighs 2.50kg.

One of the suspects, Walter Linda, according to MMIA Commander of NDLEA, Hamza Umar, was found with one kg of cocaine hidden in her nappy. Another suspect, Ibojie Osemen, 26, inserted one wrap of same drug weighing 150 grammes in her private part while the third suspect, Obadeyi Odion, 37, ingested 66 wraps of cocaine weighing 900 grammes.

The commander said the war against illicit drug trafficking is total, warning real and potential drug traffickers to shun the dreadful business or be prepared to spend time in prison.

Obadeyi Odion, Daily Sun learnt was a divorcee and mother of four, tested positive for drug ingestion during screening of passengers on Alitalia flight on her way to Milan. After she was placed on observation for three days, she excreted 66 pieces of cocaine weighing 900 grammes. Unlike others suspects that smuggled drugs for a fee, Odion was a baroness in her own right. She claimed to have met a boy in Italy for advice on how she can smuggle drugs. After the consultation, she was given a contact in Lagos. That was when she decided to obtain a loan from her bank in Italy. It was the bank loan she used in buying the drug found on her. Odion in her statement noted that through the contact given her in Lagos, she bought drugs worth 11,000 euros and she ingested all 66 wraps of the drugs in a hotel room.

“I bought the drugs for 11,000 euros which I borrowed from a bank in Italy where I live. I used water in ingesting it in a hotel room in Lagos for about two hours. I did it to raise enough capital with which I can start a business in Nigeria so as to take care of my children. I have three boys and a girl living with my twin sister in Benin. My eldest child is eleven years. I needed a business that can give me quick and big return that was why I agreed to do it.” Odion, a native of Edo State, stated.

According to Hamza, “the arrests and seizures should serve as warning to drug traffickers of the dangers inherent in their heinous activities. If drug traffickers fail to quit the criminal trade, they will continue to walk into prison like many others that we have arrested.”

Nigerian drug syndicates have adopted several modes of smuggling narcotic drugs over the years but this is the first time the agency is uncovering cocaine in nappy worn by an adult female. The suspect Walter Linda was found to be wearing the cocaine in form of sanitary towel during body frisk on her by female narcotic agents during outward clearance of passengers on Alitalia flight to Rome on Friday, February 26, 2010 at about 9:20 pm.

For accepting to put on the cocaine pampers, Walter Linda, whose travel expenses have been paid for by her sponsors, would have been given the sum of 3,500 euros. The 39-year-old lady who lives in Italy made confessional statement on her involvement, which she blamed on financial hardship. She said she overheard people discussing about drug and she was interested. “I used to frown at drug trafficking but I got myself involved in the same act I have been condemned. It was discussion that landed me in this mess”

The suspect also blamed herself for being blinded by the monetary offer from drug barons. “I was blinded by the 3,500 euros they promised to pay me. This is my first time. The drug was prepared in pampers form and brought to my hotel room in Lagos where I wore it. I have a provision shop at Bari, Italy but I needed some capital to invest in the business. I also need money for the burial of my late step brother, my mum and 18 year-old-son in Anambra,” Linda stated. She hails from Anambra State but has been living in Italy for 17 years.

Ibojie Osemen, who had lived in Italy for over five years stuffed 12 pieces of cocaine weighing 150 grammes in her private part as she made her way towards the boarding area of waiting Alitalia aircraft at the tarmac heading to Rome. Her final destination was Torino but the trip terminated at the detention room of NDLEA as body scanning machine exposed her mode of concealment. Based on the result of the scan, two female operatives of the NDLEA then took her to an examination room where she removed the 12 pieces of cocaine to the surprise of her fellow ladies that saw Ibojie’s action as gross disrespect for womanhood.

Ibojie in her statement said she desperately needed money to pay her rent, settle her utility bills such as light, gas and also take care of her aged parents. She said it was her ex-boyfriend that introduced her into drugs. According to her, “my ex-boyfriend sold the idea of drug trafficking to me in Italy but I rejected it. When he learnt that I was in Nigeria, he called me and requested that I should please bring some drugs to him with a promise of giving me 2,000 Euros.”

“I agreed to smuggle the drug because of the 2,000 euros. I did not have any money to fall back on. They took me to a hotel in Lagos where I inserted the drugs,” she stated.
The country of Chile is struggling to recover from one of the most powerful earthquakes in history. The quake struck the South American nation early Saturday morning. It registered 8.8 on the Richter scale. Experts say the earthquake in Chile is among the five most powerful earthquakes ever recorded.

chile earthquake,chile,chile earthquakes,earthquake,chile earth quakes

The epicenter of the earthquake, or the point on the Earth's surface directly above where it happened, is about 70 miles north of the city of Concepción [con-sep-see-ON]. Concepción is one of the largest cities in Chile. The area has been rocked by dozens of aftershocks, or smaller earthquakes, since the big quake hit on Saturday morning.

On Sunday, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said that more than 700 people have been killed and many more injured.

"It's an enormous catastrophe," President Bachelet told reporters.

Countless buildings and roadways have been destroyed or badly damaged. Rescuers continued to work around the clock to find survivors who may be trapped under the rubble of fallen buildings.

Government officials estimate more than 2 million people have lost their homes as a result of the natural disaster.

Relief Efforts Under Way

Bachelet assured people that food and medical aid were on the way. Ten thousand members of the Chilean military have been dispatched to help in the relief and recovery efforts. Many of the country's major grocery stores have started giving away basic food and supplies to people in the affected areas.

President Barack Obama spoke to President Bachelet by telephone on Sunday. He assured her that the United States “stands ready to assist the Chilean government's rescue and recovery efforts."

U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton was already scheduled to tour a number of South American nations this week. She will meet with President Bachelet and other Chilean government officials in the capital of Santiago on Tuesday.

Secretary Clinton will deliver badly needed communications equipment requested by Chilean officials. This equipment will help those working with rescue and recovery efforts to reach areas whose phone and Internet service were cut off by the quake.

Second Major Quake This Year

The earthquake in Chile comes less than two months after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that Haiti suffered in January. Although the earthquake in Chile was more powerful than the one in Haiti, the damage is unlikely to be as severe.

Earthquakes are more common in Chile, and many buildings and homes there are constructed to withstand tremors better. Also, the area of Chile most affected by this earthquake is not as heavily populated as Port-au-Prince, where the epicenter of the Haitian quake was located. Furthermore, Chile is one of South America's richest, best-organized countries. Its government has more supplies and people available to effectively respond to national emergencies.

Effects of Earthquake Felt Across the Globe

The energy released by the quake caused shock waves to roll across the Pacific Ocean in the form of tsunamis [tsoo–NAH-mees], or massive waves that have the potential to do great damage in coastal areas. Although coastal communities in Russia, Japan, and the United States were concerned, there were no reports of severe damage from the waves that eventually reached the countries' shores.
