Casse Les Frontieres, Fou Les Tetes En L'Air

I had every intention of posting some new material today from an up and comer in the house scene when I was messaged by net pal Marble/Institubes DJ and producer Jean Nipon. He made a random Facebook post about wanting an early recording from Paul Johnson called 'The Other Side of Me and Mores' from 1996.' and how much he wanted a copy. It just so happened that I was able to track it down for him and it got me to thinking about how many great OLDER songs are out there for sharing.

If it weren't for my friend Abi T putting this in my French made masterpiece in my hands and demanding cash from me I probably would have never came across it but I am so grateful of this mans vision with regards to great music as it is still one of my favorite electronic records of all time.

I have thrown together a few tracks to highlight a style of old that's timeless in its creativity. That's something that can be hard to find these days with the disposable Electro and wannabe crossover genre biters that currently inundate us. Kevin Saunderson Feat. Inner City

When Kevin Saunderson moved from Brooklyn NY to small town Belleville 30 miles from Detroit no one could have predicted that he along with Juan Atkins and Derrick May would completely revolutionize music and once again put Detroit back on the musical map. But this is of course precisely what they accomplished with their early efforts.

"Inner City is a Saunderson collaboration that came about "by accident," according to Saunderson. In 1987 he recorded a backing track in his home studio, but needed lyrics and a female vocalist. His friend, Chicago house producer Terry ‘Housemaster’ Baldwin suggested Chicago native Shanna Jackson a.k.a. Paris Grey."1 (Wiki)

Kevin returns here with his 'Inner City' project that features the inimitable Paris Grey on vocals and with the help of fellow Detroit dweller Kenny Larkin we see Kevin reclaim the form of the early nineties techno. Pumping machinations and cut and paste vocal edits from Larkin chop this track into many collage pieces that seem to be out of sync with the structure of the track but never let go of your feet and waistline. Especially when the cut kicks into full steam at the 2 and half minute mark.

Bumpin In SXLND

Having achieved such accolades as second best album of the year by readers in online music site Resident Advisor's 2011 Best Album poll for his full length "Room(s)" and also placing his productions in the major motion picture "Black Swan" it is safe to say that MACHINEDRUM has officially landed a blow to all mainstream shite club that crowds the airwaves.

Travis Stewart returns with the release of the 'SXLND EP' on Glasgow's LuckyMe records he applies his trademark stamp of gritty crackle analog over top of new style beat structures. This EP seems to be inspired by Deep Chicago & Modern UK House music. 'SXLND' brings to mind such luminaries as Four Tet/Jacques Greene/Caribou while recasting the genre in his own image.

From the beginning track which is little more that a ululating bass section with analog vinyl static to the 2nd off beat title stomper he pushes his sound further forward than even 'Room(s)' full length achievements. With songs like 'No Respect' and 'Van Vogue' he owns the dancefloor without compromising his almost sinister sounding house with more watery, filtered vocals and full on clap pads and synths. With the latter track 'Van Vogue' he channels the sounds of Surkin and Modeselektor into a balanced almost Dirtybird records banger. Rounding out the EP is 'DDD' which is a straight house jam in the spirit of Cassius that pops along steady with a bottom end that tests the low oHm frequencies without overloading._______

Wednesday's PULL SHAPES w/Beauchamp

Greenroom Winnipeg is yet another incarnation of the address which has changed hands many times over the years. When I was first in a punk band growing up I did my first show at what was then the Alternative Cabaret, which then became Die Machine which is incidentally where I first learned to sharpen my chops as a DJ helping out with the legendary Tuesday and Friday nights spots featuring the new rave of olden times past.

After many expansions and upgrades to the sound systems and decor the Die Machine was no more. To be leveled and replaced by the soul suckin American Apparel outlet store which you see today. The Collective which resided upstairs was a legendary string of nights with Mike B and Rob Vilar but it too saw its time only to be reinvented as HI FI club but like its downstairs neighbors it lacked any real soul of identity except the occasional ruckus or out of town artist and it too sank into obscurity and obsolescence.

I am happy to say that it the space has been reborn and redesigned by a friend of mine who has run many successful businesses in the city and has elevated this space to the stature of what it has never been - A slick, modern, centrally located club with a roster that will surely keep the heads bobbin for years to come.

Focusing on local and out of town bookings showcasing house, hip hop, and indie augmented with some the cities veteran DJ crews GREENROOM WPG is a breath of fresh air to old timers or newcomers alike.

On the 23rd of November our longtime buddy Mike B will be launching his Pull Shapes night and with Rob Vilar and Departures to kick start what will surely be the new weekly spot to jam out to the newest in house and disco jams. DROP DEAD 2011

Every culture across the globe has in one form or another a belief in the living spirit. These are ties that bind us together in friendship and marriage. It is the driving force behind our collective consciousness as our souls interact with one another. If the belief in a living residual spirit is inherent in every religion and every individual then what happens when that residual energy is released upon the death of the physical body? Martyn's 'Ghost People'

Dutch/D.C. producer Martyn releases his sophomore album this week wherein he seamlessly blends Dubstep, House and Techno into a darkly impersonal soundtrack. On 'Ghost People' he is balancing his jetset DJ life with these productions displaying the less trendy invocations of the aforementioned genres which gives us a look into the home producers mindset in contrast to his funky, broken beat live sets and Fabric outings. It is, according to the press release, a lot less concerned with “sorrows and melancholy” than Martyn’s first album Great Lengths.

The title, Ghost People, is a reference to “passionless DJs and producers … plastic, hollow shells that focus only on the in-the-now grooves or keeping in line with trends.” Another heavy influence on the record is “being on the road for a long time, and seeing how you cope with situations … I try to zen my way through it, and just stay focussed on my music.”

Ils ne sont pas nombreux les artistes de Detroit qui passent les phénomènes de modes et les nouvelles tendances comme si de rien n'était ! Moodymann est membre de cette très petite caste et on peut presque dire sans se tromper qu'il fait partie du trio de tête ! Oui, on dansait déjà sur son incroyable track "Shades Of Jay" au Mirano ou au Food dans les années 90, idem à Dirty Dancing ou au Culture Club dans les années 2000... Et c'est sans parler de son génial "I can't kicks this feeling when it hits" que l'on ressort dans chaque mix, lorsque le public le mérite, comme une cerise sur le gâteau ! Kenny Dixon Junior, c'est son nom à la ville, a également opéré sous les pseudos, "Magohany Brown" dont l'album est un joyaux de la musique house black. Son label, KDJ Recordings, sur lequel il a sorti la plus grande partie de ses tracks est, quand il est sous la forme du vinyle, un des plus recherché et collectionné aujourd'hui... Mais il a aussi sorti, ou ressorti, une série de perles dance floor sur le label de Carl Craig "Planet E" ou encore "Peacefrog Recordings", tout autant respectable... Ce qui surprend chez Moodymann, c'est qu'aucun autre artiste n'est jamais arrivé a l'imiter voir le dépasser... car le son de Moodymann est unique, crade, chaud et sensuel à mourir mais surtout intemporel. Alors ce soir, c'est un ponte de la house black 'made in Detroit' qu'on reçoit, et ses apparitions sont si rares que tu serais juste stupide de rater ça ! Smokey !

Motor City Drum Ensemble's - L.O.V.E. Remixes

After seeing Resident Adviser's recently upped video on Real Scenes 'Detroit' I had to share this Kyle Hall remix of Motor City Drum Ensemble's latest remix package on K7 records. Besides showcasing the issue that Detroit has had over the years it highlights how pressure to any system can sometimes reveal the true diamonds of human capacity within the realms of art, culture and most of all music.

The tracklist for Danilo Plessow's DJ Kicks that came out earlier in the summer was so eclectic with new sounds being executed at every transition. It truly pushed and prodded my brain to accept different versions of the same funky house thesis. 'L.O.V.E.' the remix EP has what are more like Dubs or full on remakes than just pigeonholing them into the box of remix. Kyle Halls is for sure my favorite sweeping you along and building sounds and breaking them into warring factions that eventually settle into the groove and locking in a classic Detroit feel that only this seminal producer can bring forth.

'Fair Enough' Fools Gold

It's been a helluva long time since my last post and I apologize for that. Summer is a busy time and I have been trying to promote and poster for more and more parties so my time is limited. I have been on a major drum and bass tip lately but I won't defy the original intent of this page by crossing the genres here.

Para One and Tacteel are back together at last with a smooth and abstract sounding EP for Fools Gold which is welcome news. For awhile there I thought FG would continue to put remakes of every disco song on the planet with the like of Duck Sauce and Treasure Fingers churning out the Nu disco flavour at an alarmingly crash and burn rate. This EP sees them broaden their horizons with a intelligent and balanced sound from Para and Tacteel. A1 chugs a neat little 80 bpm style rocker while the 2nd and 3rd tracks 'Rome' and 'Touch' shimmer with new icy production that pays homage to styles of old with washy vocals and shiny cymbals. All in all worth the wait from the label that could have self destructed but instead reinvented itself, at least for now.

Finnish producer Jori Hulkkonen has been a behind some of my favorite releases over the years from his earlier days on F Communications and now the omnipresent and ever creative electro label from Montreal. Turbo records which is owned and managed by Jori's' good friend Tiga may be the reason for Jori's freedom and new found minimalism. Straight forward and simple yet compelling in their banging bottoms and scorching pads and synths the 91st release for Turbo entitled 'S.W.O.T.' carries his ideal of heavy melodic influences with his first two cuts "Strengths" and "Weaknesses" and more acidic, caustic undertones on the "Opportunities" and the included track "Threats". The fact that Soma records is celebrating their 20th anniversary (1991-2011) makes me feel more than a little old. But with this age comes the wisdom to know what was dope then, now and what will push the boundaries to the next level. The third EP from Somas 20th Birthday series is a monster release. The Scott Grooves classic is reworked by a very-much on-form Claude VonStroke. Joining Claudes remix is the legendary Daft Punk Remix that was featured on the original release back in 1998 along with Scotts original.

2011 will see Soma Recordings celebrate their 20th year of releasing stunning and eclectic music from across the electronic spectrum. The label will release a series of singles throughout the year (some vinyl and some digital) , containing
remixes of Soma╣s extensive catalogue , including remixes of their big tracks like Scott Grooves Mothership Reconnection (famously remixed, previously, by Daft Punk), Funk DVoids Diabla, Slams Stepback and H-Foundations Tonight to name a few. After having just signed for Ed Banger and releasing the super dope "Rawkers" EP it was no surprise to see another EB Alum re-cutting one of the new singles from the French electro genius. I speak of course of the German sounding but quite French Gesaffelstein who has been label hopping all the majors recently and providing us all with a level of new minimal that can't be found anywhere. Check out his new track entitled 'The Voice' from the Ed Banger V/A comp released earlier in the month called "Let The Children Techno" which also has a slew of new hype from Oizo, Discodeine, Djedjotronic, Riton, Zombie Nation and Breakbot to name but a few.

The "I Love U EP> even added a new level of integration into the world of technology with a choose your own mouth app for the new iPhone's. It seems fairly redundant but offers you a way to show people just how much you love the French label..

TheOthers are a young DJ duo Liegeois blowing a fresh breeze on the Belgian electronic scene. Resident of the Famous Forma.T Party, they have succeeded in establishing themselves as a safe value in instilling a style of their own. They are not sectarian and their DJ-set far from linear. Their DJ-sets are each unique and different thanks to their eclectic tastes of music. BNR Family XMAS - Strip Steve

BNR Trax will be releasing a dual EP with the talents of Das Glow and Franco Berliner Strip Steve on its sister mp3 only label. They have had a slew of blog posts related to Xmas in the last week so I thought why not spread the xmas cheer with some new heat.

Redshape - Paradox Dubs

Growing up in East Germany Sebastian Kramer a.k.a. Redshape had been profoundly influenced by Detroit techno (that can't be right?) But thankfully for all of us it is. He always made a point to make his music stand alone and for something when he got in his studio to work. Most of what surrounded him at the time was tranced up and drugged out drivel. So he set out to cut up his techno his way and to hell with the dancefloor. (not literally)

His first vinyl release was in 2000 on Content, his own label (CNT#00A) which built a good head of steam internationally when he caught the ear of the one and only Jeff Mills. Who incidentally was one of the only people who could get their hands on his strictly limited releases from the new millennium label. Played also by Dave Clarke, Claude Young, Ben Sims, James Ruskin, Oliver Ho and Steve Bicknell, and I'm sure now that you have heard him - you!

Fast forward to now and he continues to push outwards into the beat universe. Recently he has been featured on Martyn's Fabric Mix and also his EP for the 'Zomby' remix which is pure tech wizardry. On 'Man Out Of Time' you can feel the ill hip hop breakdance feet and I get the urge to use a track like this to transition into some slower jams that can't fit my usual tech disco setup. Be alert and ear check the spookiest vocal ever when it drops..

This has been around for awhile now but as usual we care less about freshness and focus more on funky on the pages of VR. Lorenz Rhode leveled Strip Steve's EP with his unique blend of Duesseldorf Disco style and here he withholds the bassline in the opening minute only heightening the live elements of his productions..

Beyondbeyond / Maximilian Wollbeck is a Stockholm-born producer / DJ based currently out of Paris. Inspired by Berlin's industrial house and Paris' clean house, he plays groovy and deep beats with influences from recent acts such as Gucci Vump or Telonius. AZARI & III - Indigo EP

Chicago house revivalists AZARI & III have risen to the precipice of the electronic music world in what must be record time. Its seems only yesterday that they were getting hyped on Twitter via such names as Erol Alkan, Hercules & Love Affair, and Friendly Fires. Well it practically was yesterday but whatever..

They may have only produced 2 EP's before Turbo's 'Indigo' EP but the amount of remixes that they have laid down has left me gobsmacked. No less that fifteen which I speculate where finished in as many months of such artists as Booka Shade, CFCF, Le Le, and Munk. Its really no surprise that Tiga snapped them up and the Legendary house label Trax has announced it will be releasing the new single from highly touted Canadians.

Enter 'The Maze'

New Stefan Goldmann EP called 'The Maze' 12" was released this week on German imprint Macro records. It has 3 tracks simply named 'The Maze' 1,2, and 3. The first being the absolute nuts. The second playing down that its kinda of a radio edit. While the third is the adventure part of the track, wispy and unworldly.

It is all about the volume of this track because Stefan's previous works have been bangers concealed in silky classical and jazz oriented landscapes while this one is well constructed dancefloor attack like the second coming of the Pump Panel remix of 'Confusion' by New Order.

Its tough to pigeonhole this track into a corner, with Daft Punk's' Rollin and Scratchin' for breakfast, Boys Noize for lunch, and whatever you call the analogue mayhem that sound like Cliff Burton from Metallica reincarnated doing a 2010 version of 'Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)'

Poka

One of my favorite disco house producer's out there at the moment is none other than Poka. Dimitris is from Greece and is currently working on a Diploma in Electrical Engineering. His influences range from Daft Punk and The Eternals to soul and disco from the early 60's and 70's. Along with his partner in crime Farilight, the two have been organizing parties under the name Stella Starz in their hometown of Athens. . .
