I know I haven't written since March! But I will write hopefully within the next few weeks. A lot has happened but I haven't had time to write about it all! I'm still here. Check back in a few weeks!

So Carnevale was almost a month ago....The pictures are in reversed order, sorry. But it rained on Carnevale so the floats were the following Sunday. The pictures start with the day of the parade and work their way back towards the Monday before Carnevale.

So recently, I have been given the title of being the "Party Teacher." A few weeks ago, I switched classes with Ipolita so her class could have more practice with conversation, while she did reviewed grammar with my class....

Well, I was asking the students what they did over the weekend, when one student said he celebrated his birthday. He then informed me that his wife had made a cake for his birthday and he had brought it for class! So of course, we sang Happy Birthday and ate cheesecake!

....But what is funny is that Ipolita's class never celebrates anything and this was the first time and I just happened to be covering her class that day :) My class always parties and her class is jealous of our parties, even though we do share. ;) But, the one day I switch they have a party, it must mean that I brought the party or the party followed me. And there is apparently a Neapolitan proverb that says "What Maria wants, comes to Maria." My name is now "Maria Angela." :)

Since then, my classes have continued to party... And, I am the Party Teacher/Maria Angela :)

And it goes to show "Ogni giorno è una festa" in Italy or at least when I am around. Before I thought it was just Italy but maybe it is what Italy does to me :)

Appreciation

I know I haven't written in a month. I said this year I was going to be more diligent but unfortunately it doesn't seem that way...

I have a lot to write about but I am going to split up all the entries instead of having one huge entry. I am going to start with my day yesterday.

Yesterday, I went to Pozzuoli for work and in order to get there I take two forms of transportation, train and bus. Usually, the train is never on time. And in fact, I was a little late so I didn't catch the earlier bus to Pozzuoli. Instead I waited in the windy weather for 30 minutes. As I stood there waiting for the bus, I noticed the stands selling mimosa in honor of International Women's Day or Festa della Donna. It made me glad that some countries do appreciate women and celebrate this day. I was told Auguri, meaning best wishes, through Facebook, chat and in person. At work, we were even given espresso. A shot of caffeine I desperately needed at the end of a long day. I was also given a small bouquet of mimosa even though I had the option of taking a huge branch home...Mimosa trees are everywhere in Italy and are in full bloom this time of year. They are very pretty.

When the bus finally arrived, I took a seat next to the window. The bus experience is always an interesting one. Usually, there are many immigrants, including myself on the bus, but also some interesting characters. The smell usually is barely tolerable, can't wait until summer..... I saw a nicer dressed man come towards the seat next to me and sit down. I never know if anyone wants to talk, usually they don't but I pulled my headphone out of my ear just incase a conversation was going to take place. Instead, I saw the man pull out his phone and start a call. Then I glanced over again and noticed he was having a video call. I could see the woman on the screen as well as myself since he had the phone pointed towards me. Not sure why, he turned it shortly after. Then he started signing to the woman on the screen. I instantaneously felt pure joy for technology. I never thought how video chat on cell phones could improve communication for all forms of communication. I may sound ignorant but I was truly happy that deaf people could communicate using cell phones. Yes, there is text messaging but this is different. I use video chat to talk to my mom so she can see my face every once in awhile but I never thought about sign language. Other people on the bus were staring at the man and I felt that it was rude to stare but I have found that many, not all, Italians tend to stare. The whole experience made me appreciate my hearing capability. Afterwards, I thought about the music I was listening to and realized the man or the woman on the phone can't listen to music. It made me sad that they don't get to listen to the beauty of music. I was having a day full of appreciation for my life.

This morning, I woke up at 4:55am. Don't ask me why, I have no idea but as I realized that I was awake, I heard birds chirping and singing. Why at that time of day? But then I felt happiness that it was a sign that Spring was near. I couldn't fall back to sleep right away and wanted the birds to shut up but I had to remind myself that Spring was near! Afterwards, I was very happy and appreciative to hear their music at that time of day! :)

Today, I walked in the sun on my way home from work, very appreciative of the sunny day. When I returned home, I decided to make lunch. Again, I am not the professional like Ipolita's mother but I try...First thing I did wrong was that I didn't use the proper pasta, I used what I had in the cupboard. I made pasta with broccoli and it was delicious. Maybe I was just hungry but it tasted great. I was appreciative that have had such an experience here in Italy. I have learned how to cook many more Italian dishes and have eaten so many wonderful foods. I felt pure joy that I have had this experience.

As I sat eating my lunch, I admired and smelled my mimosa. It is very pretty. I love the color yellow. It is very positive and uplifting. I felt tranquility and again appreciation for my life. I am blessed and every now and then I need to pinch myself just and step back and appreciate everything I have been given. I have been uncertain of my life lately and it helped to finally feel some tranquility. It also helped that "Smile" was playing on my iPod while I was reflecting on my life. "If you smile through your fear and sorrow, smile and maybe tomorrow you'll see the sun come shining through for you"- It is true :)

I know I haven't written in a long time but I haven't been eating a lot so I don't have much for a blog post :) But, it is now getting into the season where food will become a priority! :)
Carnevale is among us and will officially take place on Tuesday, although festivities have already been initiated. Yesterday, Ipolita and her family made Migliaccio, a semolina cake and Chiacchiere, fried strips of dough...

Today, the town started to come alive in honor of Carnevale. The children filled the streets in their costumes. They were all so cute! :)

Today, I went to my student, Stefania's house. It was her birthday so we had a party :) We ate a lot too! But of course it was all delicious!

We had a nice time together. We laughed a lot and our conversation was in English/Italian. Everyone around the table understood English quite well. I was impressed! But, we used both languages... Some memorable topics of discussion were about when you ask for directions and then the person giving directions asks you to repeat what they said like it is an exam...which has happened many times to me! I am glad I am not the only one who feels this way. We also talked about the origins of our meal and how it is quite the international meal since oranges are originally from China/Portugal...there was a big debate about that...then we talked about the origins of Native Americans...It was a very pleasant and lovely Sunday with Stefania and her family. They were very gracious and invited me back whenever I wanted. Thank you Stefania and family! :) Can't wait until next time! Looking forward to more laughs! :)

I haven't written in over a month....yeah I know I've been slacking!

So the following are pictures from the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 in America and Italy....

We went to Ipolita's aunt's house for dinner to celebrate her cousin's birthday. She had the following for dinner: sausage and Neapolitan broccoli, which I love, rolls, pizza and another salty treat that had ricotta and ham for the filling, it was very good!

At Sunday lunch with Ipolita, we had pasta, baked potatoes and cotechino, the salami, a traditional Christmas food...Always delicious :)

The last week before Christmas, I decided to make Christmas cut out cookies for my students....Aren't they cute :) They taste good too! :)

Oh, my students wanted cheesecake too :)

At the Christmas party with one of my classes: cookies, cheesecake and a student's mother made something similar to cinnamon rolls which were full of butter and deliciousness! :)

At the last Christmas Party at school, these were the treats...I couldn't let you all miss out on the food!

That evening, I had a couple of student's over and I made hot wine. We had hot wine, cheesecake and chips :) Here I am getting the party started :)

Early the next morning, I left for America. I left Rome at 9:30ish and by 11:00am rolled around, I was already enjoying a nice glass of wine :) It was 12:00 somewhere :) The older gentleman sitting next to me looked at me and cheered me on! :) He had orange juice. :) I had a nice conversation with the older gentleman. I found out he was going to visit his daughter and grandson in Miami for Christmas. He was very kind and couldn't hear well, which made it a little difficult when I spoke to him, since I spoke in Italian. He couldn't speak English. Once I told him I was an English teacher he seemed more eager for me to help him with his customs forms. It was an enjoyable ride and I was shocked that this older person never slept for 12 hours! He watched movie after movie! Anyways, I hope he had a good time with his family! Salute!

While I was in America, I took advantage of tasting all my favorite foods and drinks :) I found peppermint marshmallows, so I convinced my mother to have a cup of hot chocolate with me :)

For New Year's Day, my mom had a neighborhood party. This is what was brought:

We managed to go to the beach twice while I was home. Doesn't the sun look so warm, I must say it does, especially from cold Italy!

We visited a friend in route to DisneyWorld. She took us around her town on a golf cart. I sat in the back and got to really see and feel the sights! It was a wild ride! :) It was a senior citizen town and there were golf carts everywhere. We saw a center where senior citizens can interact and socialize with others. It was quite the experience. We walked into the gym. You see a bunch of ellipticals, treadmills, and weights being used. It was packed with senior citizens! I was the youngest one in the room! I started laughing. I thought it was great to see so many seniors exercising but I was also in complete shock! They also had different clubs the seniors could take part in according to their interests....It was fascinating to see. An awesome experience!

After the golf car ride and senior citizens, we headed for Disney. We arrived just as the parade started...Perfect timing!

Then we headed directly for the new Fantasyland, where there is the Beauty and the Beast area. We hadn't eaten lunch so we decided to eat at Gaston's Tavern. We had a brew that was apple juice with a hint of marshmallow....OMG it was delicious!!!!

We also shared a pork shank....It was huge!

The next day we had lunch at Epcot at the Mexico pavilion. It was our first time eating there. I was craving chips and salsa like none other. The chips and salsa definitely fulfilled my craving and the entree was delicious as well! Mom had enchiladas and I had chicken with rice and peppers and onions...

In the evening, we went to Downtown Disney and walked around. I love how everything is Disney. Look at this chair :)

Friday was the day of the big race. The Family 5K. Mom walked it and I ran. Here are the fireworks after each corral started.

In our corral, we were in the front at the starting line.

We crossed the finish line to Footloose. It was a great ending. We had a great time as always and Mom wants more to join us next year!

We returned home and I left the next day. This was my breakfast compliments to my mother. Eggs with basil and cheese, and semolina bread from NYC. Yummy! :)

Last Sunday, we had lunch at Ipolita's house. Her parents had returned from America so we had the full spread!

Other than trying not to eat, yeah right, life has returned to normal here in Italy. I was on the train the other day and spotted snow on Vesuvius. It is mighty cold here compared to Florida, that is for sure!

The Christmas Spirit through Song

Christmas time is a time when we all become a child again, except for Disney World, I'm always a child when I go there! But, Christmas is magical. The lights, the trees, the decorations and the happiness that comes with Christmas. Even though, I am not in America during the Christmas season, I can find it here in Italy. It isn't as extreme as in America but you can find lights on every street corner, Christmas trees in people's windows and the stores filled with people preparing for Christmas. What excites me is when I teach my classes, I am able to look out the window and see lights on the balconies. The lights aren't always hung nicely but to see the lights makes me happy. Today, especially, I felt the Christmas spirit. It helps that Christmas is just around the corner and that this is the last week of school. But, we had a spontaneous day of Christmas caroling in my classes. It helped that I was in the singing mood. I started and my students joined in. My first class had only 2 students but they seemed to know all the words and gladly joined in. My last class was bigger and some of them wanted to sing, of course I obliged. Even if they didn't know the words to some of the songs I sang, they still tried to follow along. What was amazing was when all 8 of them joined in for Jingle Bells. The class was so loud but it sounded like heaven was singing along with us. It was overwhelming for me to hear them all singing. These are teenagers mind you, and for them to sing along, I felt was the magic of Christmas! I also felt a strong feeling that something else was going on but I can't figure out what exactly it was.

After we sang the English Christmas carols, they started to sing the Italian Christmas songs for me. It was very nice to hear them sing Silent Night in Italian (Astro del cielo) and their own Italian Christmas song, Tu scendi dalle Stelle. As they sang, Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle, I was trying to intently listen and try to understand what they were singing. It was beautiful to hear them singing :) Then I heard, bambini (children) di vino! I stopped them and I said, WHAT! Children of wine??? They all laughed and said, "No teacher! DIVINO!" Oh, divine. Ok that makes more sense....Guess I know what I was thinking about.....

Anyways, it was a magical experience for me tonight. I truly felt like a child again singing those songs. It made me remember my wonderful childhood and our annual Christmas Caroling around our lake....I was also impressed that even though I listen to Christmas music, I dont really sing the songs, especially the carols... But here I was recalling them after all these years. Just wanted to share. Another little touch of Christmas!

Oh and I just remembered a good point made by Buddy from the movie Elf. The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear! I think my class made Santa's sleigh fly! :) I definitely felt the Christmas cheer!

Last night, after work, I went to a student's house for dinner. We had made plans prior that I would go to her house for dinner and afterwards we would go to Naples to see the Christmas decorations.

So at 8 o'clock, after my lessons, I joined my student's father, who is also a student, to their house for pizza. It was raining but we made it one piece. As I walked into their house, I saw Christmas everywhere! They had a huge Christmas tree and decorations in every corner of the house! I was very impressed and definitely felt the Christmas air!

They even had decorations in the bathroom like in America. They couldn't believe that I took a picture of their bathroom...But I thought this was too cute! :)

I love being an adult!

I am an adult. I have been for over 7 years legally. I think mentally I have been an adult for more than that. I tell myself these things but sometimes it doesn't sink it. But, yes, I am an adult. And recently, I have realized how I am becoming more and more of an adult every day. For me, I have realized this through food. When I was a child, I was the pickiest eater. Now I love everything, except fish. I found myself crossing into a new realm a few weeks ago. I cook often and I do enjoy my cooking but every now and then I surprise myself. One night, a week or so ago, I came home after a long day at work and decided to make something fast to eat. I was fighting allergies and sinuses and I decided to make soup. Ok, I like soup, something I have recently, within the past few years, admitted to myself. But, then something popped into my head. An egg. What? No! But I found myself reaching into the refrigerator for the egg. I was going to make egg soup/pasta. I don't know the name but my grandmother would make this at least once while we were at her house for Christmas every year. And, I hated it! I thought it was gross! I remember and could actually hear my deceased grandfather say this as I was making it, "Oh this stuff is good!"

Why are grandparents/parents always right!?! Well I made it and ate it. My throat and sinuses felt better and I actually liked it, a lot!

The picture doesn't look that appealing but you will have to trust me, it was good. :)

The whole experience made me realize that I was an adult and I enjoy liking things that I didn't like as a child. I was finally growing up! I also realized that I am becoming like my family! How did I know how to make this? I hated it, why would I remember how to make it. I had never made it before. The last time I had it had to have been years ago....but somehow I managed to make it very fast and accurately.

This is my specialty dish. I never liked zucchini. Now this is my staple meal. My favorite. Zucchini, tomatoes, onions and cheese. :) Another reason I love being an adult.

Here is my conclusion to why I love being an adult....First, vegetable soup. I never liked soups and here I am making them all the time! I can't stop eating it tastes so good! :) Healthy and so unlike my childhood self. And finally, Wine. By far my favorite reason for being an adult! :)

My students asked Ipolita and myself this question this past week: "Why are you here?"

They ask me frequently but I wanted to address it again. My students find it interesting that my dream is to live in Italy when their dream is to live in America. They compare their city/town to the American cities they see on television. I tell them there is no comparison. They are different. Italy is an old country, America is new in comparison. The houses, buildings, roads and cars are bigger. There is more space in America. The culture is different as well. But, I tell them that Italy is wonderful because it is old, it has a rich history and culture. Plus, the food is amazing! :) We went on to debate many other aspects as well...

The discussion made me think about my life and why I am in Italy. This is what I have discovered....

Being born and raised in America was a privilege that I was fortunate to have and wouldn't give up for the world. I love my life and without my life in America I wouldn't have had the opportunities that I have been blessed with. America is a cultural melting pot filled with many ethnicities. It is amazing to say that I know people with origins from all over the world. I myself am quite the mix. This is something that many people can't say. All the Italians I know are 100% Italian. Yes, I know in history there have been many take overs but for now they are "Italian." I tell my students that I am Italian, Irish, Swedish and German and they are amazed I could be so many things! :) I inform them that America is a country full of immigrants and that no one in America is 100% American because American as an ethnicity doesn't exist according to me. We all came from somewhere, except for the Native Americans who are technically the true "Americans." But, that is a subject in itself. Back to my life. :) So I am a mix. I told my students that unfortunately many people in America don't know where their ancestors came from. I am fortunate that I do know and am interested in my family history.

It is this that has drawn me to Italy. My ancestors were from Sicily. I grew up with customs and traditions that I thought were "American" but I have found out that really they were Italian. When I was little I was curious in Italy and everything that came with it. I dreamt that I would live there one day. That dream has come true but why was it a dream in the first place. For me, learning about my history and where I came from would somehow help me identify with who I was. I felt lost as a child/teen. I have pale skin and blue eyes, very much my father's child and recognized with that part of me but I wanted to find the Italian, my mother's part in me. I grasped on to my mother's culture as much as I could but I still couldn't feel whole. I knew only a part of myself and I needed to find that other half. I think living in America allowed me to feel "American" but I was missing another component, my "Italian" life. This was what I was lacking and found last year when I moved here. I felt it right away. I was whole. I found my identity. I was truly Italian American but in America I never felt that. I only felt like I was an American. Now, I am continuing to learn the language. I am at the point that I can understand a lot, even to the point that I can understand a random conversation on the train while I have my earphones in my ears listening to music. Speaking is another issue but I do speak when I am forced and even though it isn't beautiful, I can make myself understood.

I am proud of myself. I found the missing piece to my life's puzzle. I am Italian. My heart is home. I know who I am. I am working on the language so I can feel completely Italian. I am not fluent but I can speak more than anyone in my family and that in itself makes me feel happy to know we can continue building on the relationships my grandfather formed many years ago.

The beginning of Christmas and Winter!

December has arrived! The countdown to Christmas has begun! It is a very exciting and fun time for me! I love this period. Unfortunately, the weather has started to show signs of winter. And in Naples, that is having rain for two weeks nonstop! Mamma Mia! It rains cats and dogs! It rains sideways, front ways and back ways... I have been caught in it far too many times and I end up being drenched and soaked for the entire day. I am ready for it to be over with! :) And, I know it has only just begun! So in the mean time, I am continuing to take my vitamins and eat as much vitamin C as possible. I can't get sick!

Here is my defense for any colds...

Speaking of food. Surprisingly enough, that hasn't stopped. Shocking, I know! You will see below pictures from this past Sunday. Although, I wanted to share the napkins Ipolita had at her house...they say "Buon Appetito"! I thought it would go nicely with all the food pictures :) So Buon Appetito!

Then the first dish: Genovese. This is pasta with onions. Her mother in law made it especially for us. I had never had it and since I love onions they insisted that I had to try it....and boy was it good! :) It reminded me of a pot roast flavor but with a lot of onions.

The meat that was in the pot while cooking the onions for the Genovese dish...which was like pot roast. I was very excited for this because I haven't had a pot roast in forever, seriously, many years! I had even mentioned it to my mother that I wanted her to make me one when I come home next...But I got it early!

This is the Neapolitan broccoli- Friarelli - kind of bitter but I have grown to like it very much!

Thanksgiving and More

I haven't written in awhile because I've been busy but now you get to hear all about my recent adventures....

The first adventure is that I started working at a company in another town, teaching one class a week. In order to get to this town and this company, I have to take a train and a bus. The class time was scheduled for later in the day but I informed them that the train takes a lunch break and therefore the times wouldn't work. So they rescheduled the class for right after lunch. Since it would take me about 2 hours to get there, the manager was concerned that I wouldn't eat lunch before the course, so he invited me to eat lunch with them. I thought it was interesting because he said that we can't have a teacher teach without any lunch. They are very concerned about lunch and eating here! :) In America, I don't think they care that much.

My first trip there was an adventure. I took the train which took longer than expected, then I was supposed to take a particular bus. I found it and waited to leave. When the bus driver returned, I asked if it stopped where I needed to be dropped off. They informed me that it didn't. Instead I had to walk across the park square and find another bus. When I found some people to ask for the other bus they informed me that there was a bus but it was on strike. Lovely. So then I called Ipolita who informed me that there was another route I could take. So I got back on the train and headed for another train line. I found the train but it was delayed and there weren't any signs anywhere. Something was going on though, because when I was waiting for the train a lot of people were screaming and yelling. Once we got on the train they continued but I wasn't nervous. Instead I told myself, you are in Italy this is normal. I finally made it after 3.5 hours to the company. We found out afterwards we had the wrong street address, so I should have stayed on the original bus in the first place. Anyways, I returned home with no problems.

The second trip was much better in a sense. I arrived there with no problems, except I got a little motion sick on the bus ride. As soon as I arrived, we had lunch. Fridays in Italy are traditionally fish days. They did have vegetarian options and turkey, but most of the options for lunch were fish. I chose the risotto with mozzarella and sauce and a plate of broccoli. I ate with the manager in silence and once we were finished we continued to the office building. I had my course and then I headed back home. The bus came shortly after and I arrived at the train station in plenty of time. I waited for the train to arrive. But the train arrived 40 minutes after. Then the track changed. All the trains were delayed. Something was going on but I had no idea what. After almost an hour, I ran to catch a train going to another station. I got on it. I arrived at the other train station but had to wait another 30 minutes before the train to go home. While waiting, I decided to have wine that evening to calm my nerves. But I needed something in the mean time. I went to a place that sold sandwiches and pastries but I wasn't hungry I just needed chocolate. After walking out of that place, I decided on looking at purses. Maybe if I bought one I would feel better. But, there weren't any that called my name. So I was sad, tired, and depressed as I walked to the track for my train, when I stumbled upon a new store filled with chocolate. It was sent from God just for me at that moment. I walked in and was immediately happier. I bought a bar of chocolate and the sales lady gave me a free piece of Lindt chocolate filled with coconut. I was happier for this, I think. After chit chatting with the sales lady about it being such a long day, she was complaining too, I headed for the train. Part of the train was dark and the other part had lights on. I went and sat in the section that had its lights on. But shortly after the lights went out and the doors were locked. We were locked inside the train. But, I wasn't worried. I popped the free Lindt chocolate in my mouth and I was good. The lights finally turned on and the train moved about 20 minutes later. I ended up running into a friend so we chit chatted and talked the rest of the train ride home. It was another adventure....

Anyways, my first trip there I took these pictures. The first one is of a huge fig tree growing from the side of a wall. It makes me laugh because fig trees grow like weeds here and in the most random places. My grandfather tried growing fig trees in Florida and could never get them to grow or produce a lot of fruits. The second picture is the view from the bus stop, which is right outside of the company. Nice view.

I can't remember what day Ipolita made this but I realized that I may not have a photo of it so I took a picture. It was delicious as always, bacon, peas, and cream on pasta...yum!

During the week, I seem to come across more things to decorate my house with. For example, I bought lights! Now I have Christmas tree lights and I love it!

Thanksgiving Day: For lunch, we had pasta with pumpkin to keep with the Thanksgiving day theme.

For Dinner: We went to a local pub where they made the turkey and stuffing. We had about 25 students that joined us for the festivities. We played Thanksgiving day themed games and ate turkey!

For dessert: we had Birthday cake, Ipolita is celebrating the school's 15th year being open!

Saturday, I went to Salerno with a student. She wanted me to see the lights of Salerno. Apparently, they are the best in the area. So we went! I was getting in the Christmas spirit as I waited for the evening to arrive so I took pictures of my decorations. :)

This weekend was one word. Happy. I typed happy into my iTunes to find "happy" songs to listen to while I wrote this post. One of my favorite songs came on from the soundtrack of Happy Feet, "Song of the Heart." While I listened to it, I wished I had brought the DVD with me to Italy....I will have to bring it back with me next time I go home. But, anyways enough of that. I'm writing about my weekend not about an animated film.

Yesterday, I went with Ipolita and her family to Naples in search of drapes for her new house. Unfortunately, businesses in Naples don't take into consideration that people work during the week and are only able to shop during the weekend. So all the shops were closed. On our way home, they decided to stop at Ikea (only my favorite store in the entire world) and look for material there. I was like a little kid when we walked in the store. I told Ipolita I was very happy! :)

As we walked through the store, I filled up my shopping bag without a problem. We were walking towards the checkout counters and there they were, 10-12 huge stands shining and sparkling from afar....the CHRISTMAS Section! :) As soon as I saw the Christmas trees, I turned to Ipolita and said like a little kid seeing Santa Claus, "OOOOH LOOK! CHRISTMAS!!" I was too excited. We were looking at the decorations and then Ipolita said "oh look you can get a Christmas tree in a bag." I know she was joking but I looked at the price and thought "why not?" I thought a few seconds more and decided I needed a tree. I won't be home until Christmas Eve to see our tree at home, so this way I can celebrate during the entire Christmas season! I quickly ran and got some ornaments and beads to put on the tree since they were already in line.

Afterwards in the car, Ipolita's daughter asked when I was going to put up the tree, they assumed in a few weeks I think. I said "maybe tonight if we're lucky." They laughed and probably believed me since they know me so well.

I came home, unwrapped, put together and put away all the items I got from Ikea. Then I opened the bag with the tree and started to put it together. I put Christmas music on so it would be "official."

I am very happy for the Christmas tree. The Christmas season makes me so happy. It is a magical time and I love it! Every time I look at the tree I smile and my heart fills with joy. To some people, it is just a tree and it doesn't mean anything. But to me, it represents a wonderful time, a time full of peace, love, and joy. It represents family and friends. Some of my greatest memories were during the Christmas season with my family. Some people say it is too early to put a tree up but for me, why should we wait to celebrate such a wonderful season. Bring on the love!

Today, I went to a friend's house for lunch. His mother was very happy to see me. She told me she was glad to have me over since I don't have any family here in Italy. And then she welcomed me to be with her family for Sunday lunch, the day for family to be together.

America and Every Other Nation's Decision :)

This past Tuesday was a stressful day for me. It was Election Day in the United States of America. Our next President would be named and I was passionate about the subject.

I voted by absentee ballot. I received confirmation that my vote had been received but I was still hesitant if I completely trusted the electoral system in Florida. After previous elections in Florida and absentee ballots not being counted, I wanted to ensure that my ballot would be, in fact, counted. I knew there really was no way of knowing if my ballot had been counted but I could monitor the results all night long...so that is what I did.

During the day, though, I had lessons at school. My students were all informed of what day it was and insisted on asking my preference for President. Before I shared my opinion and preference, my students informed me of theirs. It was unanimous. Obama. My first class of the day informed me of this. And guess how old these students are...yep you guessed it, 9, 10, 11, and 12 year olds. Such informed and politically conscious children having their say in not Italian but American politics. It amazed me. I doubt any children in American know presidential candidates from Italy. I'm still shocked. Later in the class period, we were playing hangman. Usually the student tells me which word or phrase they will use in the game but my student changed it! He had me guessing with the other students! I guessed it right away but doubted myself because I still couldn't believe children are so aware here.

We talked long and hard in my adult class, multiple times actually, about this subject. They already had opinions and thoughts but wanted me to confirm them or make sure that they understood something correctly. A lot of them knew they way our government works, which again surprised me because how many Americans know how Italy runs and operates?

After work I went straight home and turned on my computer. I started my countdown until the counting would begin on the East Coast. I had about 4-5 hours, so I decided to watch a movie. Why not "Love Actually," My first christmas movie of the season. After being in a cheerful and positive mood filled with hope and love I figured I could look at the computer. I still had some time before I would see anything significant so I took a little nap. I woke up from my 2 hour nap at 3am.

The night had just begun. I was ready to stay awake all night long. I pulled up my sources online and looked at the maps. There were only a few states that were red and blue. We had many more to go...I watched as each state would send in their results and slowly update the count. When it came down to Ohio and Florida, I felt like I had a horrible internet connection and my download was taking forever to download to my computer. And it did, it took 3 hours until the announcement was made that Obama was projected to win. I didn't go to sleep right away because I was still watching Ohio "download" and they were too close for comfort. I waited because I also wanted to see where Florida was going to go. The numbers were swaying in favor of Obama but the state wasn't changing to blue on the map. Since this was my new state, I wanted to see which way it went.

After they made the announcement that Obama had won, my Facebook newsfeed went crazy. I saw the first post and knew it was going to get wild. But I was still hesitant since neither of my sources had made the announcement online. Everyone at home were in front of their televisions and had heard the news before me. Technically, I found out via Facebook. I watched as friends and family members wrote about the news. It was exhilarating to watch. I was chatting with my friend, Becky, and we were sharing all the different posts we were seeing. There were hundreds of positive statuses and a few not so positive statuses. But, all in all they were pretty positive. I could feel the cheering on the page. It was an amazing experience. For this being my first Presidential election abroad, watching and feeling the excitement from my friends on Facebook made it worthwhile and a memorable experience. It was a party! I was scrolling down my newsfeed liking (almost) all of the posts. Everyone was commenting and sharing their thoughts on the matter. It actually brought us together. Most of my friends on Facebook I don't talk to that often. I apologize for this now but I get wrapped up in my own world that it is hard just to stay up to date with my own life. But, this event had us all talking, sharing, and celebrating the wonderful news that President Barack Obama would remain in office for 4 more years!

I decided to go to sleep afterwards, since it was past 6 am. I couldn't stay awake to watch the acceptance speech so I decided I'd watch it after I woke up in a few hours.

I went to sleep and woke up a few hours later to a text message from my Italian cousin in Milan....This was his message:

Good Morning United Sates of America

Italians were excited just as much as I was, well maybe not as much but still! The following day and the day after all my students asked if I was happy. Before I could reply, they all informed me that they were all happy! Ipolita told me that the Italian news had surveyed Italians the following morning on whether or not they were glad Obama won and 93% said yes...I get a Swedish newspaper online and they said that the Swedish people were happy as well. I know this is only a small sample of countries outside of the USA but I would bet that the majority of other nations around the globe were happy with the outcome as well.

On to another 4 years....Congratulations President Obama! Italy sends their best wishes! Auguri!

My weekend in Milan

I spent this past holiday weekend in Milano with my cousins and their friends. I had never been to Milan, except for the airport. I saw many sights, ate delicious foods and met many wonderful people.

I arrived Thursday morning on All Saints Day. The streets were quiet and empty. Every one was at home enjoying their day off. It was planned that we would go to my cousin's girlfriend's house for lunch. Apparently, her parents were excited to meet me :) When I arrived, I was greeted with welcome arms and many smiles. The table was set and waiting for me to arrive. Our first course was mushroom risotto. Very delicious!

Then we had roasted pork with potatoes.

Then salami and spinach. Apparently the salami is traditional for that region.

Then they brought out cheese, gorgonzola and parmigiano. Gorgonzola is made in a nearby town.

Next was fruit.

Then walnuts...

And finally, dessert. The chocolate cake is a torta di latte. It had raisins and pine nuts in it.

After our delicious and very filling meal, they took me through their town, Vimercante.

I was excited about going on this trip because I was looking forward to seeing all the colors on the trees. In Naples, it is difficult to see the leaves change colors due to the warmer temperatures. I loved seeing the colors and took many pictures. Here is one.

The next day, we went to Milano. We took the Metro into the city and got off at the "Duomo." We climbed up the stairs from the Metro, turned to the left and BAM! There was the Duomo! I love when that happens. There were many people! We went inside and I kept thinking how my grandpa always wanted to go to the Duomo and never made it.

After we went through the Duomo, we went to the Galleria. It was pretty. I've seen three different Gallerias in the past 2 months: Rome, Naples and Milan. Apparently in this particular Galleria, there is a spot that will bring you good luck if you turn in a circle. So I did it. Why not! :)

After visiting the Galleria, we saw the Theater, the Castle, old buildings, beautiful streets, etc. We went to a cafe next to the Duomo and looked at the views. In the cafe, there was a display of chocolate shoes and purses, so I had to take a picture! :)

Afterwards, we went in search of some expensive stores. We found one street and I want to share what I found....

After our fun day in Milan, we headed back to the house for dinner. We had wine and potato chips as an antipasto with music playing in the background. My cousin thought it was Christmas because he put on Christmas music! I couldn't believe it! I was tempted to start listening to it since the weather was starting to feel like winter but I was good. Instead my cousin plays it for me without me saying a word! Great minds think alike! :) For dinner, my cousin made pasta with broccoli. Then chicken and hot dogs. For dessert we had Danish cookies. I laughed because they are popular all over the world! Those cookies are delicious!

Friday evening, I went out with my cousin and his girlfriend and their friends. We went to a bar. They asked which bar we should go to "the King's head or Sir Jacks." I went with Sir Jacks since it sounded better. The next morning, I went with my other two cousins to Lecco. For breakfast, we went to a bar.

Along the way, we stopped at Madonna di bosco.

Then we arrived in Lecco. It was fairly chilly but a beautiful city. We stopped at a bar before we made it to the heart of the city for a bathroom break. The bar was small and I didn't see a bathroom but we asked anyways and they said there was one where a small door was at. So I opened to the door to expect a small toilet and BAM there wasn't a bathroom. It was a huge courtyard. I felt like Alice in Wonderland when she opens the door and finds herself in another land. So I walked around and found stairs but it looked like apartments. Then I saw garage doors and thought, "no the bathroom can't be there" but then I looked closer and saw the sign "Toilette." This was definitely an adventure. Sure enough there was a toilet and I found a woman already there dumping a bucket of water in the toilet. She said there was no water.....Anyways, long story short, I found the bathroom.

After I warmed up from some tea, we headed for the water.

After walking along the shoreline, I asked to try some typical foods :) I tried this chocolate cookie that was soft and had raisins inside with nuts. It was good. My cousin didn't like it though.

We left Lecco and headed for another spot for photos. We walked through a lot of nature. I had fun taking pictures.

After stopping for photos, we headed to the big shopping center/mall for lunch. We had a piadina. I had the vegetable and cheese piadina. It was very good. Then we walked around and I saw a two story carousel! We went to the bathroom, I know another bathroom story and in the same day! When I walked into the bathroom I saw many stalls. I chose one then backed away quickly. I thought I was losing my mind. I thought I couldn't see straight. So I chose another stall. Same thing. I went down the rows praying for something else but there wasn't. I was shocked. I couldn't believe it! I was in Northern Italy, where everything seems so modern and clean. But, here I was in a bathroom with no toilets but holes in the ground. I thought I was in Turkey again. Luckily, I lived in Turkey for a year so I have had practice but what a shock!

That evening, we went out with my cousin and group of friends. We went to a Mexican restaurant just for me! I told them that I miss Mexican food tremendously so they took me. It was fun and I was in heaven! Margaritas and chips and salsa! yum.! There happened to be a big football match on that evening but my cousin assured me that there would be a tv because I didn't want him to miss out on the big match. But there wasn't a TV. Instead he asked to borrow my earphones because he was going to listen to the game. We were talking, eating, drinking and all of a sudden we would hear loud clapping and cheering. Everyone in the restaurant turned and looked in my cousins direction. He didn't seem to mind, he was happy his team was winning!

On Saturday evening we made cheesecake. They wanted to learn so I taught them. After the cheese cakes were in the oven, I mentioned that Sunday morning I would make pancakes. Instead they asked how long it takes to make pancakes. I informed them that it would take little time to make them. They then suggested that we make them then at 7pm at night. No problem. So we did....They loved them. They put nutella on it instead of syrup....good idea!

The next morning, I woke up and my cousin's girlfriend said "pancakes for breakfast!" I didn't want to make pancakes but then she said "no no not you, I will make pancakes." Ok. I taught her that you can add things to the pancakes. So we added chocolate chips. She did a great job. I gave her the honorary title of "Professional Pancake Cook" After breakfast, 12:00, we went to say goodbye to the girlfriend's parents and sister. We also had to deliver the cheesecake. This rose was outside and called my name for a photo. :)

For lunch, the boys (my cousins) cooked again. It was fun living with 3 boys for a weekend. They cooked and cleaned for me! :) We had wine and potato chips for an antipasto, along with some jazz music playing in the background. Then, we had pasta, my favorite kind-gemelli, with sauce and prosciutto cotto. It was great!

Then we had pork, salad, potatoes and onions. Very good!!

For dessert we had cheesecake. :) It was delicious!

After lunch, we played Cranium in Italian. It was interesting and somehow I managed to be on the winning team! :) After spending a great four days getting to know my cousins and their friends, I had to leave. In the car ride to the airport, my cousin said (always in Italian, I just translate so all of you understand :) "it seems like it was just Thursday morning." I said,"Time flies when you are having fun!" I had a great time and hope to visit again soon! Thank you all!

Halloween 2012!

Happy Halloween Everyone!

I hope you are all having a spook-tacular day today!

I wanted to share with you the past few days and today!

On Sunday, we carved pumpkins. I let Ipolita's daughters design the pumpkin and I assisted with the carving. It was fun! We cut, scraped and dug out the "meat" of the pumpkin for pumpkin pies. Pumpkin doesn't come in a can like it does in America, so Ipolita takes advantage of the situation and makes the pies a few weeks early. These are Italian Jack O'Lanterns before and after.

Monday was my friend's birthday...This was the feast! :)

On Tuesday, I went to Ipolita's house to help her with the pumpkin pies. Before we started on the pies she prepared lunch. Pasta with pumpkin! Delicous! :)

Today, we had a good party. We had pumpkin pies, cakes, cookies, potato chips, popcorn, brownies and cupcakes. I had a great dinner :) For the last half of the party, we watched Hocus Pocus. I think the students enjoyed it and I hope they understood most of it. I learned something though, salt is also used greatly in Neapolitan homes. In the movie, they used salt to protect themselves from the witches. And, in Naples they use it to protect their homes against evil. Neapolitans are very superstitious and many people have the salt on a shelf near their front door for protection. Now, I will need to look up the history on salt and superstitions.

Anyways, I had a good Halloween. The weather made me feel right at home too! It has been rainy and cold just like a typical Halloween day in Michigan. Now on to Christmas.... :)

An eventful week!

This past week has been an interesting one and fun one for that matter.

It started on Monday. One of my classes on Monday night brought homemade chocolate cake and tiramisu for another student's onomastico (name day). We can always have a party! :) The student who brought the tiramisu actually thought that it was my birthday so he wanted to make it special for the teacher. He, a 14/15 year old, made the tiramisu by himself and brought candles as well! I informed him that my birthday was in April and that he can make me tiramisu then! :) It was cute. We shared the left over cake with the other classes so the whole school was celebrating!

Then on Tuesday in my adult class, we got on the topic of American vs Italian politics. It was an interesting one at least. Of course, I enjoy politics so I enjoyed the class immensely. I think the students found it quite interesting as well since they kept asking questions!

On Wednesday, I went to Naples for the annual Trinity conference/workshop for teachers. I realized how much I had grown since a year ago. I went from being the uninformed, clueless person to the expert. Not in terms of the conference but in terms of living life in Italy. I was so nervous last year as to how I would get the train and find the hotel where the conference was being held. But this year, I didn't plan and just winged it. I now know the train system so I had no problems or worries. I made it to the hotel with plenty of time to spare and instead decided to wander around until the conference started. I went back towards the train station, treated myself to a sfogliatella for breakfast and then proceeded to the English section of the bookstore. I browsed the books until I came to one I wanted to buy. Then I went to the counter where I presented my bookshop membership card and purchased my book. It felt good treating myself. I should do this more often :)

I went to the conference and listened to the moderators. Nothing new since last year. Since I had gotten up extra early to go to the conference I decided to leave after the first half. I knew I had to leave early since I had to go to work so it made sense to leave when I did. As I was entering the train station, I saw a train leaving in 2 minutes. I still had to buy my ticket and saw the huge line at the tobacco shop. I thought, "oh well, I'll catch the next one even if it isn't for another hour." After I bought my ticket, I looked again and the train was still there, so I ran to the platform and jumped on the train. It was my lucky day! I got home and managed to take a nap before work. :)

On Thursday, I was told that I looked slim from the lady where I pay rent, always a good way to start your day. Then in the evening, I went out with a couple of students. We went to a lounge/bar and chatted for what seemed like hours. I think we had a good time :)

On Friday, I read my new book all day! I went to work, came home and finished it. I have to learn to read slower! I read these books too fast! Now I need to buy a new book! :)

On Saturday, I had a couple of lessons in the morning and then had lunch with Ipolita. We had thunderstorms all day and night. I stayed home and made vegetable soup for dinner and watched a movie. I went to bed knowing that I would get an extra hour of sleep since Italy changed its clocks last night!

It is now Sunday and I am trying to get moving. I will be joining Ipolita for lunch, followed by pumpkin carving, I believe. Will post pictures later! Have a good Sunday everyone!

Friends, Football, Family and Food

This weekend I managed to incorporate the four Fs; Friends, Family, Football, and Food. :) What a great combination, right!?

Yesterday, I was invited to watch the BIG match between Naples and Juventus with some friends. It was a BIG match because it was the first time this season that the rivals would compete against each other. The tension is very intense between these two teams. The entire week prior my students were telling me how important the match was and were giving the students who weren't Naples fans a hard time...

Well I will tell you that the outcome was not a happy one for the Naples Team. But I did enjoy seeing my friends and hanging out with them. I was told I was missed, I looked slim, and had a nice conversation with my friend's step dad. The step dad is usually quiet and doesn't talk to me but he sought me out and wanted to speak to me. He informed me that his father spoke English, actually American. He said that his father would translate during the war and even knew Eisenhower. He said he even had a photograph with him. :) I was fascinated to hear this. He also told me that after the war in 1945, his father was given goods from the Americans such as chocolate and other delicacies every day. He liked the Americans, I think. :)

He also told me a joke. He told me about the time an American came to Naples. There was a Neapolitan giving the American a tour. He said that Neapolitan pointed out the small narrow streets in Naples, the old town, the markets, etc. They passed by a fruit market and the American was curious. The American asked the Neapolitan what a particular fruit was. It was apparently a typical apple from the Campania region. The American then informed the Neapolitan that in America the apples are much larger. The Neapolitan brushed it off and continued walking. They stopped at another store and the American asked about a pear. The Neapolitan told the American that it was a typical pear from the region. The American again said that pears in America are much larger. The Neapolitan thought to himself and continued walking. This time the American asked about a watermelon. The Neapolitan informed the American that it was a Neapolitan pea...and that shut up the American. :)

I must admit that even though most things are larger in America, it doesn't necessarily mean it always tastes better. In Italy, everything tastes great! :)

On Sunday, I went to Ipolita's mother in-law's house for her birthday. This is what she prepared for lunch:

Classes have begun!

Classes have begun! I have been teaching for 1 week and so far I think this will be a good school year. All my students seem eager to learn English, so I guess that is a good thing! I even have students that bake treats for class! :)

Besides classes starting, you can tell autumn is coming to Italy. The temperatures are starting to fall but I haven't seen many leaves change color. Luckily, my family and friends have sent me pictures of back home so I can see the colors!

Overall, things are good and I will write again soon!

My Adventures in Italy with my Madre!

My mother has returned home. Now, I just want to reflect and say how wonderful it was having my mother with me in Italy.

For this past year, I wanted my mom to experience everything that I was experiencing. I felt guilty that I was experiencing all these wonderful things and mom was at home. I am glad that she has finally retired and can enjoy life. I think she truly enjoyed her time here. She got the chance to see where I live, taste all the deliciousness that I taste everyday and meet all the wonderful people that are in my life here. She even said to me before she left that she was going to miss everyone very much. They all said they hope to see her again so I think the feelings were reciprocated. Hopefully she will return, I know that she would like to.

Overall, I was glad that I was able to give her the opportunity to communicate better with our family in Sicily. Allow her to participate in the family research and visit the towns where her grandparents and great grandparents were born. It is a nice feeling when I go but I never met those people so I am glad she got to have that special moment.

It was definitely a special time with my Madre and I will never forget it. I know she felt the same way and enjoyed all the food too! :) We are related after all :)

Mom's Adventures in Napoli Continued...

A day last week, we decided to go to Naples again. I felt my mother hadn't seen enough of Naples. We started our adventure with food because as you know, food is very important to us and in Italian culture. I took mom to the same pizzeria I took my cousins, Jamie (last November) and Jane (last May).

We sat down at the pizzeria and ordered our pizza. Mom got the Margherita and I ordered the sausage and Neapolitan broccoli, which the waiter informed me was the best pizza.

Mom informed me afterwards that this was the best crust she had so far....After we ate our lunch, we adventured into Naples heading towards the historical part. Our first stop was Maschio Angioino, one of Naples many castles.

When we visited Maschio Angioino, we heard music coming from one of the rooms. Mom went and looked at what was going on. There was a live band and there was a wedding. Mom crashed a wedding! :) We toured the castle and then went on our way...

We headed towards Piazza Plebiscito and everything in between so the Palace, theater, and galleria.

After seeing some more sights in Naples, we decided to call it a day and head home. On our way home, we took a few detours. We ended up on the same road that we were on the first time we went to Naples. It was the same road where we took the underground tour of Naples. When we went through the tour before, Mom wanted to buy a candlestick holder in memory of walking through the small narrow passage underground with a candlestick. The only one they had at the time was broken and they were going to charge us $10. Since we were walking by again, I asked Mom if she wanted to check to see if they got any more in stock. We asked and they checked for us. They apologized and informed us that there weren't any left except for the broken/cracked one. So they told us to just take the only one they had for free. It was a spontaneous adventure that led us to a free souvenir. Things happen for a reason.

Overall, we had a great day in Naples again. :)

Mom's Adventures in Rome

Last week, we went to Rome for two days. We left early in the morning to catch the train. We could have taken the fast train but decided to go the slower route and cheaper route. The only train was at 5:15 AM! Mamma Mia was I tired! But surprisingly the train ride went quickly. When we got on the train for Rome everyone else was getting the train as well! It was packed. Mom and I sat back to back to each other.

When we arrived, we headed for our hotel. Since our room wasn't ready, we left our bag with the hotel and headed out into the city. It was only 9am, so we stopped at a cafe and had breakfast. Once we had our breakfast, I headed towards the Trevi Fountain. It is my favorite place in Rome so I wanted to make sure we saw that first. Along the way we stopped at some sights and took pictures.

After wandering around Rome, we decided to eat lunch. We just happened to eat at "Mamma Angela's" :)

Mom got lasagna. I thought why order lasagna when we make it at home but it was really good!

After lunch, we decided to check into our room since it was now ready. We both took a nap since we got up really early to catch the train. After we got our act together we headed out and continued the adventure. We started at the Spanish steps and wandered through the streets. The streets were really cute and quaint. We loved it. Then we headed towards Piazza del Popolo. On our way to the piazza, I spotted a GAP store! I thought there weren't any GAP stores in Italy but I guess it might be new. We walked in just to say we were there. Then I asked mom ever so kindly if we could go into H&M. She knows what happens whenever we go into stores...we usually end up with a bag in our hand afterwards. Sure enough we did. :)

We made it to the piazza and admired the scenery for a bit then decided to sit down and people watch. We sat at a restaurant in the piazza and had some wine as you can see below. I was debating whether or not we should eat something little for dinner or completely skip it and just have wine. The waiter first gave us some potato chips to go with our wine. I ate one, no problem. Then I ate another one and it tasted like fish so I stopped eating them. I figured ok, no more chips. Then I looked at the menu again. We decided on fried mozzarella. The mozzarella comes and I took one bite and I told my mom it was fish. She thought I was making it up. Why would I make something up like this! She knows how much I don't like fish! :) So we asked the waiter what I was eating and he said, Mozzarella and anchovies. Why in the world would you put anchovies on mozzarella! OMG! So Mom ended up eating the whole thing. I decided the universe didn't want me to eat dinner but encouraged me to drink my glass and my mother's glass of wine :)

The next day, we decided to head towards the Colosseum. We stopped for breakfast first then continued with our day.

We saw the Colosseum then decided to go through the Roman Forum. But, when we saw the line we decided to skip it since we wanted to see other things that day. We were disappointed but I came to the rescue. I found a secret spot that led us right to the forum. We didn't actually go through it but we saw quite a bit for free! :)

After the Roman Forum, we ventured on our way again. But first stop was to go to my other secret spot to overlook the city of Rome. While we were at my secret spot thanks to my uncle for discovering it, we watched children eat their lunch in the park. As we were walking by, we heard "Angela!" and then "Caterina." We both looked at each other because the teacher was obviously scolding the children. But, how did they know our names! :)

On our way to the Vatican, we wandered and got ourselves lost on purpose. Mind you, I don't get lost :) I like adventure. We saw this park and many other cute streets and alleyways. We stopped for lunch. As we were eating, the middle and high school had gotten out and there were teenagers everywhere. It was interesting to watch because teenagers are the same no matter where you are. I felt bad for them since I know how difficult and awkward those times are...

My mother was about to start swearing at me because we had walked a lot. But we finally made it to the Vatican.

After walking through St. Peter's, we headed for Hard Rock Cafe. I figured I would be in Italy for awhile and how could I pass up the opportunity to have a burger. :)

After the hamburger, we ventured back towards the hotel to grab our bag and then to the train station. We took the high speed train home. Only 1 hour and 10 minutes. We enjoyed our time in Rome but we were exhausted. We took the next couple of days to lay low and do absolutely nothing. :)

Mom's Adventures in Salerno

Again a little late, but here it is.

Last week, we went to Salerno. It wasn't planned. I had a lesson in the morning and then when we returned to my apartment I searched train times for Salerno. There just happened to be a train in a half hour so we left for the station. It took us about 1 hour to reach Salerno including our one stop we had to make. We decided to go to Salerno for lunch. Like most of our adventures, they usually revolve around food.

We arrived in Salerno and since I didn't know exactly where we were, I asked for directions. If I walked maybe one step I would have seen the sea right in front of me. We walked along the sea and looked for a restaurant.

We found a restaurant. It was interesting because there were people from all over the world sitting amongst us. There was a table full of Americans, a table from France, a table from Spain and the rest were Italians, I think.

After lunch we set off to walk further along the shoreline and walk off our lunch.

We adventured into the historical part just a street or two in from the shore. Mom wasn't too keen to leave the water but afterwards she was glad. I took her to the Cathedral or Duomo. It is very old, like most things in Italy :) They were preparing for a festival because they had the statues ready for a procession. Mom enjoyed looking at the architecture and the design of the church since you could tell there was another influence that wasn't Roman.

Afterwards, we strolled down the street. Mom was particularly interested in the fact that they emphasize and show off the old buildings/stones amongst the new construction. She would point it out every foot or two. It was really impressive.

After strolling the historical streets of Salerno, we returned to the sea. We stopped for gelato. Watched the people then returned to the station. We had a good day...

On our way home, we had to stop in another city to change trains. When we were walking to the platform, we heard someone serenading us. There was a guy singing opera and playing the piano in a building near to the station. We could hear him loud and clear. It was like we had our own personal concert while waiting for our train. What was interesting was that the birds were flying around and singing along with him. It was truly an interesting and wonderful experience. It was a perfect way to end a great day.
