Southeast US: Día 3, 1ª parte, Great Smoky Mountains & Blue Ridge Parkway

In a few days in English!!

Volvemos de nuevo a nuestros itinerarios por el sur de los States. Os recuerdo que aquí tenéis el viaje completo.

En el día de hoy vamos a continuar viendo el Parque de las Great Smoky Mountains e iniciaremos nuestro recorrido por una parte de la Blue Ridge Parkway, de la que ya os he hablado aquí. Tenemos aproximadamente 200 Km de camino, pero por ojo, por carretera escénica y de doble sentido, y sin contar con las desviaciones, a excepción del Clingman`s Dome como veréis (punto C).

Arrancamos pues de Gatlinburg y cogemos la desviación para la Roaring Fork, una preciosa carretera escénica (otra cosa, pero de carreteras escénicas por aquí os podéis aburrir), por la que podéis bien pasar rapidito, bien entreteneros haciendo unas cuantas fotografías. La verdad es que con la luz de primer ahora se disfruta de imágenes tan bonitas como estas, creo que algunas os las enseñé mientras estaba allí:

Roaring Fork

Al terminar el recorrido (es un círculo) volvéis a Gatlinburg desde donde os dirigiréis de nuevo al Parque de las Great Smoky Mountains y lo curzaréis hasta aproximadamente la mitad, de donde sale la carretera que asciende hacia el Clingman's Dome, de 2025 metros de altura, el pico más alto del parque y el tercero más alto al este del Mississippi. Por cierto, el primero, el Mount Mitchell, lo veremos más adelante también.

En esta misma carretera y con bastante tráfico por cierto fue donde tuve la gran suerte de ver a los osos de cerca, momento que tan contenta os retransmití en su momento, y del que no me resisto a poner las imágenes de nuevo :)

Al final de la carretera hay un aparcamiento y desde allí debéis continuar a pie hasta el observatorio. Ojo, aunque es solo media milla es todo cuesta arriba. Un consejo: antes de ir preguntad en un centro de visitantes, sobretodo si veis que el día no es muy claro, porque a lo mejor no os merece la pena ir hasta allí, teniendo en cuenta que puede haber bastante tráfico. Las vistas, pues... impresionantes claro.

Desde luego, el Parque de las Great Smoky Mountains tiene para estar muchos días si os apetece, estas serían solo algunas de las cosas que se pueden hacer y ver y son las que elegí yo.

Nuestra siguiente caminata será ya fuera del parque, en las cercanías de Cherokee (donde os aconsejo parar a comer porque no vais a ver muchos más sitios ni mucho menos) al poco de salir por la entrada sur, Oconaluftee, y de ella os hablo... en el siguiente post!!!

I crossed this bridge once on an unusually hot day in San Francisco, and as a result I got my arms and hairline all burnt -and I was wearing sunscreen, well, perhaps not on my hairline though. The bridge crosses the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Sausalito.

Crucé este puente una vez en un día de un calor muy poco frecuente en San Francisco, y acabé con los brazos y la raya del pelo abrasados literalmente (y eso que llevaba pantalla total, bueno, en el pelo no claro). El puente cruza desde San Francisco a Sausalito.

It was finished in 1937. Up till 1964 it had the had the longest suspension bridge main span in the world, at 4,200 feet (1,280.2 m) . It is 2737 m long and its height reaches 211 above water -on the towers-.

Se terminó en 1937 y hasta 1964 tuvo la mayor apertura principal o vano medio más largo de un puente colgante en el mundo, 1280,2 metros. Tiene en total 2737 metros de longitud y un altura de 211 sobre el agua (en las torres).

The Golden Gate is the name of the strait connecting the Pacific Ocean with San Francisco Bay. Wikipedia reports that the first Europeans who passed the strait were Spaniard Juan de Ayala and his crew in 1775, and until 1840 the strait was called Boca del Puerto de San Francisco -Mouth of the Port of San Francisco- and it got is current name in 1846.

Golden Gate (Puerta Dorada) es el nombre del estrecho que conecta el Océano Pacífico con la Bahía de San Francisco. Tal y como se menciona en el correspondiente artículo de la Wikipedia, los primeros europeos que cruzaron el estrecho fueron Juan de Ayala y su tripulación en 1775 y hasta la década de 1849 el estrecho se llamó Boca del Puerto de San Francisco. Su nombre actual data de 1846.

Bridges, yeah, I Know, but... Bridges

No sé por qué, pero los puentes siempre me han llamado la atención. Por cierto, prometo volver muy pronto al viaje por el sudeste de los EEUU, que se me ha quedado un poco abandonado, sorry! (y al viaje a la Toscana, de verdad de la buena, que empecé a escribir sobre otras cosas y se quedó a la mitad)

Como decía, no sé que tienen de especial, pero por alguna razón me gustan, quizá la incertidumbre de qué habrá al otro lado en el caso de los más grandes, el vértigo que me he pasado en algunos de ellos (sí, masoquismo puro :) ), saber que fueron obras maestras y pioneras de la ingeniería de su época, imaginarme la cantidad de personas que los han cruzado, cómo se las arreglaron para construirlos, quién sabe… No estaba muy segura de cómo titular esta serie de posts, quizá a algunos no os convenza mucho que llame bonitos o interesantes a alguno de los que incluyo, pero bueno, es mi particular selección.

Así que nada, empiezo así esta serie de posts para a hablar de los puentes que he tenido oportunidad de ver en persona y que más me han impresionado, bien por grandes, bien por famosos, bien porque sí, en ningún orden en particular. Mañana el primero, y mientras un pequeños aperitivo fotográfico...

I am not sure why, but bridges have always caught my attention. By the way, I promise to get back to the itineraries in Southeastern US in the next post, I know I have left it a bit, sorry! (and yes, to the Tuscany itineraries, I will I promise)

As I was saying, I don’t know what makes them special to me, but for some reason I like them. It may be the uncertainty of what will be found on the other side in the case of the bigger ones, the vertigo I feel when walking in some of them –yeah, I know, pure masochism :)-, knowing that they were master pieces of engineering in their own time, imagining the number of people that have crossed them, who knows… I was not very sure on how to title this post series, maybe some of you won’t agree at all in calling beautiful or interesting to some of the ones I include, but then, it is jus my own particular selection.

So, that's it, I am going to start writing on those I have had the chance to see and have impressed me most, either big, either famous, either just because, in no particular order. Tomorrow I start with the first one, in the meantime, here comes a "photographic snack":

Cronicae: a Web to Travel Through Time

Hace poco he descubierto una web que me ha llamado mucho la atención. ¿Alguna vez te has preguntado cómo era esa plaza de París hace 30 años? ¿O qué pinta tenían los turistas en los años 80?

Just some weeks ago I discovered a website that has really caught my attention. Ever wondered what that square in Paris was like 30 years ago? Or what were tourists like in the eighties?

En Cronicae puedes ver las fotos de otros buscando en el mapa y subir las tuyas propias. Tal y como dicen en su web:

"CRONICAE es la crónica audiovisual de aproximadamente los últimos 180 años. Se trata de hacer un recorrido audiovisual por nuestros recuerdos, hechos, paisajes y convertir además a toda la comunidad de internet en cronista, y entre todos ilustrar un lugar, un acontecimiento, un objeto, una situación, etc. En CRONICAE, los archivos están datados, y geoposicionados lo que aporta mayor valor al documento. In Cronicae you can see the pictures of others by searching on the map and upload your own. As they state in their website (the translation is mine and probably not completely accurate):

"CRONICAE is the audiovisual chronicle of approximately the last 180 years. It is about making and audiovisual tour around our memories, facts, landscapes and turn the Internet community into reporters, so that between all of us we can illustrate a place, an event, an object, a situation, etc. In Cronicae the files are dated and georeferenced…”

Si vas al mapa puedes buscar las imágenes por rango de fechas en la zona que estés viendo en ese momento. Desde luego es una buena web para perderse un ratito por otros tiempos y otros lugares...

If you take a look at the map you can find the images corresponding to the area you are seeing and you can search by date range. Looks like a nice web to get lost for a while in other times and other places…

1. I did not start to walk until I was 14 months old

2. To compensate I guess, I spoke my first words at 5 months old and at one-year-old I was already speaking fluently

4. I don’t drink coffee, not because of a personal decision to quit caffeine, but because I tried it only once and decided I did not like it. Anybody out there that does not like it?? I feel alone ;)

5. At 8 I would watch any health programme on TV because I wanted to become one. Once, at that age and while visiting a doctor, I recognised her from my favourite programme and so happily asked her for an autograph. You should have seen her face, and those of my parent’s as I explained to them who she was, almost offended that they had not realised.

Unfortunately, not much later I would discover I could faint just by having a blood test and so quit my dream of becoming a doctor

6. I love learning languages.

7. And I can’t stand beans, no matter how they are cooked.

Y aquí van esas 7 cosas:

1. No empecé a caminar hasta los 14 meses.

2. Para compensar, supongo, empecé a decir mis primeras palabras a los 5 meses y al año hablaba ya estupendamente.

3. Podría decir que me encanta viajar pero me da que eso es obvio. Me encanta caminar e imaginarme cómo era la vida hace siglos dónde quiera que vaya.

4. No bebo café, no por ninguna decisión que haya tomado de dejar la cafeína si no porque solo lo probé una vez y decidí que no me gustaba. ¿Hay alguien ahí a quien tampoco le guste? Me siento sola ;)

5. Con 8 años me tragaba todos los programas de médicos y salud porque quería ser médica. Una vez, con esa edad y visitando a una médica, la reconocí de mi programa favorito y tan contenta le pedí un autógrafo. Tendríais que haber visto su cara, y la de mis padres mientras les explicaba quien era, casi ofendida de que no se hubieran dado cuenta. Desafortunadamente, no mucho más tarde descubrí también que era capaz de desmayarme con un simple análisis, y ahí terminó mi sueño de ser médica.

6. Me encanta aprender idiomas.

7. Y no soporto las judías, da igual cómo estén cocinadas.

The largest hórreo in the world?: Carnota, Galicia

Have you ever seen a hórreo? It is a kind of granary that you can see all over Galicia and gives the landscape a peculiar aspect. In Carnota you can find what many people declare to be the largest one in Galicia. Built in the 18th century and is 34 meters long. Apparently, though, it is actually the third, after other two in Araño and Lira. The controversy is due to the fact that the one in Araño is of a different type -without "feet"- and the one in Lira is longer but narrower.

Hórreo in Carnota

En Carnota se encuentra el hórreo que algunos dicen es el más grande de Galicia. Construido en el siglo XVIII, tiene 34 metros de largo. Parece, sin embargo, que sería el tercero en la lista de los más grandes, tras el de Araño y el de Lira. La controversia se debe al parecer a que el de Araño es de un tipo diferente (sin pies) y el de Lira, aunque más largo que el de Carnota, es más estrecho.

Savannah: Spanish Moss

Spanish Moss, Savannah

Spanish moss? And what is it?, you might be wondering if you have not been in this area. Well, it is a very funny plant with no roots at all that you will find all around Savannah! It is a species (Tillandsia usneoides) in the same family as pineapples (Bromeliaceae) growing over the trees, and feeding directly from the air's humidity, that does not lack in this land. It gives air and the whole place an air of mystery as well as lot of charm.

¿Spanish moss? ¿Y esto qué es?, os preguntaréis quizás si no habéis estado por estos lares. Pues una curiosísima planta que en Savannah podéis encontrar por todos lados y que no tiene raíces! Se trata de un especie (Tillandsia usneoides) de la misma familia que las piñas (Bromeliaceae) que crece sobre los árboles, alimentándose directamente de la humedad del aire, que aquí es mucha y que da a los árboles y a la ciudad en su conjunto un aspecto de lo más misterioso y al mismo tiempo, mucho encanto.

Sus fibras se han utilizado durante años para multitud de cosas, entre ellas, ¡para rellenar colchones! Aquí podéis ver más usos curiosos.

And the name? Welll, as you see, is neither Spanish nor moss. But it has a ver romantic legend: it owuld be the hair of a Spanish woman to whom the Cherokees would have cut it and throw over a tree as a warning that she and her husband would not settle and establish a plantation in the surroundings of Charleston around 1700. Her hair would have turn grey then and started to expand over other trees. You can read this legend in the Wikipedia and other version here.

¿Y ese nombre? Pues en realidad, como veis, ni es Spanish, ni es Moss (musgo). Pero tiene una leyenda de lo más romántica y es que se trataría del cabello de una española a quien los Cherokee se lo cortaron y tiraron sobre un árbol a modo de advertencia para que ella y su marido no establecieran una plantación en las afueras de Charleston allá por 1700. Supuestamente, su pelo se volvió gris y comenzó a expandirse por otros árboles. Podéis leer esta leyenda en la wikipedia y otras versiones aquí.

Remember the post I wrote some time ago on people perpetuating stereotypes? Well, I have just found a series of very interesting articles. Six European newspapers have colaborated in them and they show -and sometimes refute- the most common stereotypes that we, Europeans, have on our neighbourgs.

Specailly interesting to me is the Spanish case, whose author is Carmen Morán. Are we still the country of bullfighting, sun and perpetual party? Have we ever been it?...

¿Os acordáis del post que escribí hace un tiempo sobre los que se empeñan en perpetuar estereotipos? Pues bien, hace poco he descubierto esta serie de artículos en los que han colaborado seis periódicos europeos y en los que se comentan (y algunos se desmienten) los estereotipos más habituales que los europeos tenemos sobre nuestros vecinos.

Especialmente interesante el caso español, a cargo de Carmen Morán. ¿Seguimos siendo el país de los toros, el sol y la fiesta permanente? ¿Lo hemos sido alguna vez?...

Fall Views at the Blue Ridge Parkway

Here I leave you with some of the pictures I took this fall of the amazingly gorgeous landscape of the Blue Ridge Parkway, -or the Blue Ridge Parrrrakureeeiiii acording to my GPS- in North Carolina. I was told it was the best time of the year to visit because of the fall leave color show, and, even though I have not been there in any other season, I am sure it is true. Up to you to decide!

Aquí os dejo con lasgunas de las fotos que hice este otoño del paisaje increíblemente precioso de la Blue Ridge Parkway, (o, según mi GPS, la Blue Ridge Parrrrakureeeiiii) en Carolina del Norte. me habían dicho que el otoño era el mejor momento del año para ir por el cambio del color en las horas,y aunque no he estado en ninguna otra estación, estoy segura de que es verdad. How I Book Hotels

I hope this post is useful though I am afraid it might not fo those who are pretty used to book their hotels through Internet. Anyway, here it comes! :)

Usually I book a hotel once I have done a lot of research of the places I want to visit, so I know more or less where or in which area it is more interesting for me to stay, etc. At this point I usually take a look at some forum as Foro Los Viajeros and see what threads are open related to it. Many times this is the way I have learnt from hotels with a good price/quality relation. It also helps that I can hear from other people's experiences and know they were good, though that does not mean mine is also going to be so. It is also interesting in order to find links to local hotel search engines. There are many countries where these work so much better than the international ones and give many more results.

I have to make it clear that htere is one very important thing to me: I look for hotel reservation that I don't have to pay for in advance. I think having to the whole amount of my stay before arriving is pretty unfair. Some webs make you do it if you want to book through them. There is also something very interesting: some hotel chains offer a discount if you pay in advance, in their websites and/or hotel search engines. I have also found in hotel search engines which have the payment in advance as the only option, some huge differences in price comparing to others where you pay when you get to the hotel -much cheaper in the former ones. Of course, your choice will depend on how sure you are that going to make it somewhere for a specific night. I would advise not to forget that there are, unfortunately, quite a few factors out of our control that can prevent us from sleeping where we had planned to. From something as usual as a delayed or even cancelled flight to something we had never thought of like having to cancel the whole holidays due to health problems. Anyway, as I said, that is for each of us to consider and evaluate the risk, also taking into account he cancellation policy of every hotel.

So I usually book through search engines that allow me to just reserve, though it also happens that the hotel does not admit this and they charge the whole price on your card -of course, that is something the search engine usually warns you about.

These are the tags I usually keep open when I am searching:

-two or three hotel search engines that allow me to make reservations without paying in advance, like Booking, Hotels, etc.

-a local hotel search engine if possible

- a hotel search engine that compares prices for each hotel in different hotel search engines -Oh, my God, this is a bit of a tongue twister...- for instance, Trivago. Just in case I decide that the price difference is worth my paying in advance :)

-as for me the situation of the hotel is the main feature, I also have Google maps open in order to check the Hotels. If am also renting a car I really look at the parking facilities of the hotel and if not then I also open a tag with a public transportation map of the place.

-Tripadvisor to see the latest opinions of the different hotels

And, if my computer does not explode after all this, I start from the cheap ones checking with these tools. I also usually take a look at the hotels' websites for a better description and to check for rates. Sometimes they have very good offers and they may have email subscription to get future offers.

The truth is that sometimes I feel like I am studying a Master on a place hotels :) but when your budget is limited the possibility of having a well located hotel at a reasonable price might mean being able to stay for more days or to pay more tickets to see more things, or, why not, to save money for four next trip!

Lastly, I have been spoken about hese two websites, which seem quite interesting, but which I don't know. Any of you have used them? What are they like?

-Hotwire: according to the webstie they offer very good deals but without revealing the actual hotel until you book and pay for it. You do know though the area where it is located and its characteristics.

-Wimdu: This is to rent apartments and rooms.

Cómo reservo hoteles

Espero que este post sea útil aunque me temo que a los que viajan habitualmente reservando por Internet no les voy a contar nada nuevo, pero bueno, por si acaso, ahí va! :)

Normalmente el momento de reservar hotel es cuando ya tengo bastante mirado qué es lo que quiero ver, de tal manera que más o menos sepa por dónde me interesa alojarme, etc. En este punto lo primero que hago es echar un vistazo al Foro Los Viajeros y ver qué hilos hay abiertos al respecto. Muchas veces encuentras así hoteles con muy buena relación calidad/precio y también la tranquilidad de que al menos a otro viajero le ha ido bien, aunque a veces eso no quiera decir nada. También es interesante para encontrar enlaces a buscadores locales de hoteles, pues hay que tener en cuenta que en muchos países funcionan mejor que los internacionales y dan bastantes más opciones.

Tengo que aclarar que hay algo muy importante para mi y es que busco principalmente no tener que abonar por adelantado la habitación, cosa que me parece un abuso. Algunas webs obligan a ello directamente. Luego hay algo bastante más interesante y es que a veces hay cadenas de hoteles que te ofrecen un precio más barato si abonas la cantidad completa en el momento, tanto en su página web como en buscadores generales. Y también me he encontrado con páginas que son siempre de pago adelantado, y que en algunos hoteles tenían unas diferencias abismales con el mismo hotel en otro buscador. Ahí ya depende, claro está, de lo seguro que tenga cada uno el pasar la noche en determinado sitio. En este sentido conviene no olvidar que hay unos cuantos (demasiados) factores que escapan a nuestro control y que nos pueden impedir pasar la noche dónde ya la tenemos pagada, desde algo tan habitual como un retraso en un avión hasta que nos surja algo con lo que no habíamos contado para nada como que tengamos que cancelar todo el viaje por motivos de salud. En cualquier caso, como decía, corresponde a cada uno valorarlo, también a la vista de la política de cancelación de cada hotel. Para esto procuro mirar en buscadores que permitan esta opción de simplemente reservar, aunque ojo, luego es posible que el hotel no lo permita y te cargue el precio inmediatamente (lógicamente esto suele venir advertido).

Estas son las ventanas que tengo abiertas simultáneamente:

-dos o tres buscadores que no sean de pago adelantado, por ejemplo Booking, Hotels, etc.

-si tengo un buscador local o más, también

-un buscador que me compare precio en varios sitios por si finalmente decido que la diferencia de precio hace que me merezca la pena correr el riesgo de pagar por adelantado, como Trivago.

-como para mi lo importante suele ser la situación, tengo abierta la página de Google Maps al tiempo que los buscadores es esencial. Si voy a alquilar un coche me fijo mucho en el tema del aparcamiento y si no tengo también abierto el correspondiente mapa o mapas de transporte público para asegurarme.

-la página de Tripadvisor correspondiente para ver las últimas opiniones de los hoteles.

A partir de ahí y si el ordenador no estalla en el intento, voy mirando desde los hoteles más baratos utilizando estas herramientas. Suelo abrir también la página web de cada hotel para ver una descripción más completa y el precio que dan. Muchas veces tienen ofertas interesantes y suelen dar la posibilidad de suscribirse por email para que te envíen futuras ofertas. La verdad es que hay momentos en que parece que estoy haciendo un máster sobre los hoteles de cada ciudad, pero bueno, cuando viajas con un presupuesto limitado el escoger un hotel bien situado y a buen precio puede significar la posibilidad de invertir el dinero ahorrado en pasar más noches o en ver otras cosas o, por qué no, en ahorrártelo para el siguiente viaje.

Por último, me han hablado bien de dos webs bastante interesantes pero que no conozco. ¿Alguno las habéis utilizado? ¿Qué tal?

-Hotwire: según la página web ellos te dan precios muy bajos pero no sabes el nombre del hotel hasta que no lo reservas y pagas. Sin embargo, si sabes la zona en la que está situado y las características.

-Wimdu: Este es para alquilar casas y habitaciones particulares

Southeast US: Día 2, Great Smoky Mountains

Aquí va un pequeño mapa de lo que serán nuestros puntos principales hoy, básicamente llegar desde Charlotte al Great Smoky Mountains National Park, ver cosillas y dormir en Gatlinburg.

El punto B es la entrada al parque en Cherokee, desde Charlotte tenéis más o menos 284 km. Esta puede ser una buena parada para empezar ya que podéis entrar en el Centro de Visitantes de Oconaluftee y haceros con los mapas o enteraros de qué tiempo se espera, si hay algún sendero cerrado, etc.

El punto C es la ciudad de Gatlinburg donde podéis pasar la noche. Tened en cuenta que la carretera que cruza el parque de norte a sur, la 441, es de dos sentidos y que si vais en otoño, que es la mejor época os encontraréis con miles de personas que han tenido la misma idea. Lo mejor, intentad evitar los fines de semana y salid tempranito. Esto tampoco os supondrá problema porque anochecerá pronto y entonces sí que no hay nada más que ver.

Por cierto, entre B y C cambiáis de estado, en concreto pasáis de Carolina del Norte a Tennessee.

Este día tendríais un total de 339 Km sin contar las desviaciones que hagáis para ver cosas. Entre eso, y que estaréis cansadillos del vuelo del día anterior os aconsejo hacer cosas que no requieran gran esfuerzo.

Por ejemplo, podéis coger la carretera que va a Cades Cove y hacer la ruta en coche de 11 Km que cómo se hace lentamente porque se trata de disfrutar del paisaje, os llevará un rato (2 ó 3 horas te recomiendan en los folletos del parque). Realmente lo haces en menos tiempo pero también tienes que llegar hasta allí y como os comento, las carreteras en el parque lógicamente son pocas y puede haber tráfico. Cades Cove es un valle en mitad de tanta montaña y tiene algunos edificios históricos (alguna iglesia y cabañas sobretodo) en el que seguro veréis ciervos (otra cosa es que consigáis fotografiarlos :) )

Si os encontráis con ganas de caminar podéis coger el sendero y hacer la caminata para ver las Laurel Falls. El comienzo está en esta misma carretera a la derecha en dirección a Cades Cove, pero no os preocupéis porque está todo muy señalizado. Es un sendero de 2,6 millas en total ida y vuelta, lo consideran moderado en dificultad. Claro, que el tema de la clasificación de la dificultad de los senderos daría para varios posts... Para mi, que no estaba muy entrenada que digamos, fue fácil (a excepción del chaparrón que nos cayó y de creer ver osos cada vez que veía un tronco oscuro a lo lejos; luego vas y te los encuentras al lado de la carretera...) y sin embargo recuerdo alguno de la Blue Ridge Parkway, de la que ya hablaremos, en el que creía que no llegaba a pesar de estar catalogado en alguna guía como fácil. Por cierto, no es que las cascadas sean espectaculares, pero el sendero sí que es muy bonito...

Para dormir, como decía, lo más cercano es Gatlinburg, sobretodo es interesante porque tiene una gran variedad de alojamiento y no os será difícil encontrar habitación medianamente bien de precio. También es el mejor sitio para cenar ya que dentro del parque apenas hay nada. Por lo demás el pueblo en sí no es muy interesante, básicamente son hoteles. Eso sí, si os gusta la carne nos dudéis en pedir aquí unas buenas costillas...

Southeast US: Day 2, Great Smoky Mountains

Here is a small map with our main point today, basically we want to get from Charlotte to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, see some things and finally stay in Gatlinburg.

Point B is the Entrance to the park from Cherokee, from Charlotte there are about 284 km. This can a good first stop as you can go the Oconaluftee Visitors Center and get some maps and updates on weather, closed trails, etc.

Point C is Gatlinburg where you can stay for the night. Take into account that the road crossing the park north-south, the 441, is a two-way road and if you are there for the fall, which is the best time of the year to visit, you will meet with thousands doing the exact same thing. The best thing to do is to avoid weekends and get up early. This won’t be a huge problem since it is also night time quite early and after that there is nothing else to see.

By the way, between B and C you will cross from North Carolina to Tennessee.

This day you would have a total of 339 km not counting with the diversions to see things. Taking that into account and the fact that you will be tired from the day before’s flight I advise you to do something that is not very tiring.

For instance you could take the road that leads you to Cades Cove and do the 11 Km loop on your car. It takes some time since the point is to enjoy the landscape, spot deers, etc. The park guides recommend 2 to 3 hours. You can really make it in less time but anyway it will take you a while just to get to the beginning of the loop since, as I said, logically there are just a few two-way roads and there might be some traffic. Cades Cove is a valley in the middle of the mountains and has some historical buildings –mainly churches and cabins- and it is likely that you will be able to see some deers. Another entirely different matter is to be able to take pictures of them :)

If you feel like hiking you can take the Laurel Falls trail. It begins on the road to Cades Cove, on the right, but don’t’ worry about that because the signalling is quite good. It is 2.6 roundtrip and it is considered moderate in difficulty. Bu the classification of the difficulty of the trails would be enough for another post… To me, is was not very difficult in this case and I am not trained in hiking. The only difficult part was the Flood that suddenly fell over us and my believe every two or three meters that I was spotting bears –all of them were actually logs. Amazing, I did not see them well apart from the roads and then the next day I find them just next to one… Back to the difficulty, I also hiked one in the Blue Ridge Parkway, about which I will be blogging soon, that was considered easy in a guide book and I almost could not get back. By the way it is not the Laurel Falls are spectacular but the trail and the landscape are great.

To stay for the night, as I said, the nearest is Gatlinburg. It is interesting mainly because it has so many hotels that it won’t be difficult to find a reasonably priced room, at least if you make a reservation before. It is also the best place to dince since n the park there sis almost nothing. The town itself has little to see. But if you love meat, this is the place to have some ribs..

These are hush puppies -cornbread balls- and no, they were not my meal, only one of the included sides. They are very good!

Esto son hush puppies (una especie de buñuelos fritos de maíz con cebolla) y no, no son el plato principal, tan solo una de las guarniciones que incluyen. ¡Están muy buenos!

And here are Hyman's Traditional Shrimp and Grits -I wrote about grits in this other post- with bacon and cheese, it also includes gravy. I took them at Hyman's in Charleston. I know, my fellow compatriots will be scandalised at the "crime" of such a mix, but even if it also surprised my Spanish taste it was not bad at all, though it was too heavy for my European-sized stomach to finish it.

Y aquí están las gambas con puré de maíz -el famoso grits del que hablé aquí- con bacon y queson, también lleva salsa de carne. Los tomé en Hyman en Charleston. Lo sé, mis compatriotas se van a escandalizar ante semejante crimen de mezclas, pero aunque también sorprendió a mi paladar español, no estaba malo, aunque era demasiado grande para mi estómago tamaño europeo.

Spanish and French history of Louisiana is obvious in its cuisine, specially in dishes like gumbo (a soup) or jambalaya (remind of paella thoug very different). I loved both of them though I would advise against having jambalaya in a sandwich or wrap!

La historia española y francesa de Louisiana es plenamente palpable en la cocina, sobretodo en platos como el gumbo ( una sopa) y la jambalaya (recuerda a la paella aunque es muy diferente). me encantaron ambos, pero por favor, ¡¡no toméis la jambalaya en un sándwich o en un wrap!!

What I Have Tasted in Southeast US: 1st Part

Wow! Where to start?? From the point of view of an European, more specifically from Spain, here is an account of what I have tried in these vacations. Some things are typically southern while others are not.

Bueno, ¿por dónde comenzar? Desde el punto de vista europeo, más concretamente de una española, voy a contar las cosas que he probado en este viaje.Algunas son típicas del sur, otras no.

In this first part, let's see things that I have also found in the rest of the country

En esta primera parte vamos con las cosas que he encontrado también en el resto del país.

And here are the typical meals of a typical diner, for breakfast, for lunch, or for dinner, whatever you choose. In the first one yo can see the famous hashbrowns, in this case with cheese, and in the second one the white thing is grits, a kind of soup or cream of corn, which I don't particularly like, but I am not very fond of soups... :)

Last Day of 2011!

Wow, here I am finishing the year in my blog. Back in July, when I started blogging I had no idea if I would make it till the end of the year, but fortunately the answer has been yes!!!!

I would like to thank everyone for your visits and comments, they are actually the reason of being of a blog, and I am very happy and thankful for that.

To finish this 2011 I would like to make a compilation here of the posts that for some reason or other I love the most. Some coincide with the most popular one that you can see on a gadget on the right, some don't. Here they are!

-The series on What to See in New York in 3 Days: it took me so long to prepare them, but I am so proud of them! Also, I enjoyed so much writing because it made me feel like I was about to visit again my favorite city in the world!

-Great Smoky Mountains: this was the first time I was blogging about a place and actually from that place! I had just had the opportunity to see those bears and I was so excited to share it with you.

-The series on my favorite beach in the world, Mónsul beach, Almería on a sunny and a rainy day. It is such a special place, I can't believe I have not been there for a couple of years now.

-Monument Valley: one of the most magical places I have ever been to. Having the chance to tour it at sunset, stay there for the night with the starry sky as the only light and tour it again with the sunrise is something I can not forget.

Bueno, aquí estoy, terminando el año desde el blog. Cuando empecé allá por julio no tenía ni idea de si llegaría al final del año, pero afortunadamente ¡la respuesta ha sido un rotundo sí!

Me gustaría dar las gracias a todos por vuestras visitas y comentarios, que son en realidad la razón de ser de un blog. Me siento muy afortunada y agradecida por todo ello.

Para terminar este 2011, me gustaría hacer una recopilación de los posts que por una razón u otra me gustan más. Algunos coinciden con los más populares que podéis ver en el menú de la derecha y otros no.

¡Aquí van!

-La serie de posts de Qué ver en Nueva York en solo 3 días: me llevó mucho esfuerzo prepararlos pero ¡estoy tan contenta con ellos! Además me encantó escribirlos porque fue como pensar que estaba planeando mi próxima visita a mi ciudad favorita.

-Great Smoky Mountains: esta fue la primera vez que escribía el blog sobre un sitio determinado y directamente desde él. Acababa de tener la oportunidad de ver los osos de cerca y estaba emocionada de poder compartirlo con todos.

-Los posts sobre mi playa favorita, Mónsul en Almería, en un día soleado y en otro lluvioso. Es un sitio tan especial que no me puedo creer que haga casi dos años que no estoy por allí.

-Monument Valley: uno de los sitios más mágicos en los que he estado. Tener la oportunidad de verlo al atardecer, quedarse allí por la noche con la sola luz de las estrellas y verlo de nuevo al amanecer es algo que no puedo olvidar.

Southeast US: Day 1

And here we start our travel in the southeastern USA. There is one thing I must say, I don’t want anyone to be bothered because of it, it is just my opinion, as always: I would recommend travelling to other places in the US first, to see how varied the country is.

This first day, as you know, will be spent flying there. In my case I was flying to Philadelphia and from there to Charlotte.

A piece of advice: make sure you have at least 2 or 3 hours –I would go for 3- between the 2 flights.

Why?

1) Customs and immigration: this does not take long in itself, but the queue could be long. I don’t know if I have not been lucky but counting all the times I have flown to the US I have waited an average of 30 to 45 minutes in the queue.

2) You need to wait for your luggage at the baggage claim belt to pick it up- though usually it will already be there after the time you have spent in Immigration- and check it in again to your final destination –amd there is a chance that you might be selected for baggage inspection if they notice something suspicious, I was once inspected as in the scanner they saw what they thought could be chorizo and finally turned out to be a couple of sandals !!!??? yes I know, but it actually happened to me). Also, you have to take into account that the borading time for your next flight is about 30 minutes before the actual flight time.

3) And of course, you always have the possibility of having your first flight delayed.

Pick up the car you have rented at the airport and for your first night, do not hesitate, go for a good, nice –if possible- and cheap hotel -motel, most probably, near the airport and if possible already in the direction of the Great Smoky Mountains. The only thing you will be doing is sleeping, because you will be exhausted and surely you will wake up quite early because of the fuc… jet lag, so you can also be on your way early.

Southeast US: Día 1

Y aquí comienza nuestro viaje por el sureste americano. Una cosa tengo que decir sin que nadie se me enfade, porque es, como siempre, solo mi opinión: yo recomendaría ir antes a otro sitios antes de Estados Unidos para hacerte una idea de lo variado que es el país.

Este primer día, como sabéis, se os va a ir en volar hasta allí. En mi caso el vuelo era a Charlotte con escala en Philadelphia.

Un consejo: aseguraos de que tenéis al menos 2 ó 3 horas (yo iría más bien por las 3) entre los dos vuelos. ¿Por qué?

1) El control de inmigración. En sí no dura nada pero puede haber cola y eso te lo puede fastidiar. No sé si yo he tenido mala suerte pero por lo general he esperado una media de media hora/45 minutos.

2) Tienes que esperar tu equipaje para recogerlo (aunque normalmente para cuando has terminado el control de inmigración tu equipaje ya ha salido y no esperas, pero encualquier caso tienes que hacerlo de nuevo), entregarlo de nuevo para que te lo envíen (y existe la posibilidad de que te lo inspeccionen si detectan algo que no debas llevar, a mi me pararon una vez porque por el escáner pensaron que unas zapatillas eran una bandeja de chorizo ¿¿¿¡¡¡¡???!!! sí, lo sé, pero así fue) y pasar otro control de equipaje de mano, con su correspondiente cola. Además contad con que la hora de embarcar será aproximadamente media hora antes de la salida del vuelo.

3) Y siempre existe la posibilidad de que tu primer vuelo salga con retraso.

Recoged el coche que hayáis alquilado en el aeropuerto y para la primera noche, no lo dudéis, un hotel (leáse motel) bueno/bonito o más o menos/ barato que os quede cerca del aeropuerto y si es posible en ruta hacia las Great Smoky Mountains. Lo único que vais a hacer es dormir, porque estaréis matados y seguramente despertaros muy pero que muy pronto por el dichoso jet lag, así que podéis salir temprano.
