Barley Grass

Barley was one of the first cereal crops to be domesticated. Archaeologists have found evidence in the Middle East that it was a staple food as long ago as 5,000 BC or earlier. There are more than 50 different varieties of barley grown in Western Canada. Different types are best for different uses.

The beaded barley is employed for the preparation of a decoction which is a nutritive and lenitive drink in feverish conditions and in affections catarrhales of the respiratory and urinary bodies: the barley water is employed to dilute the milk of the cows for young infants, it prevents the formation of the hard masses of the curdled milk in the stomach. The malt is produced starting from the barley by a process of steeping and to dry which develops a leaven “diatase” necessary for the production of malt alcoholics alcoholic drinks, but in the form of malt extract they are mainly employed in medicine. The vinegar is an acid liquid produced by oxidation of the fermented malt must. The malt vinegar is the only vinegar which should be employed medicinal.

Barley health uses and benefits

Lowers blood cholesterol

Cool barley water is used in drinks for fevers and to soothe and heal stomach or digestive upsets, irritable bowels, dry coughs, diarrhea, cystits, or irritable bladders.

May inhibit cancer

When given to babies, it helps with the digestion of milk, preventing the development of curds within the stomach.

Improves bowel function

Barley grass, a popular ingredient in juice supplements, is rich in cholorophyll and antioxidants. German researchers have also found that sprouted barley seed contains alkaloids that may have some therapeutic value

Barley contains beta glucan, a type of fiber that may help lower blood cholesterol and regulate blood sugar.

Trials undertaken in the 1990s, suggest that barley may be helpful in controlling blood-sugar levels in diabetics.

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), Germinated Barley Foodstuff (GBF)

Barley is a cereal used as a staple food in many countries. It is commonly used as an ingredient in baked products and soup in Europe and the United States. Barley malt is used to make beer, and as a natural sweetener called malt sugar or barley jelly sugar.

Recent data suggest that barley may be promising in reducing total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in mildly hyperlipidemic patients. Barley has a high fiber content; a modest inverse association has been observed between dietary fiber intake and cardiovascular disease in a recent large prospective cohort study, although results were not statistically significant.

Tanglad

Tanglad or lemon grass is a commercially-viable plant that is cultivated mainly for the fragrance that it produces. It can be easily found in most Asian countries, and is widely cultivated in tropical areas. By nature, tanglad is a permanent or perennial plant, and the benefits of which are not restricted to its fragrance. The utility of tanglad basically lies in its leaves, where all the benefits are derived. What can be seen of this plant are mainly its leaves, which allows easy access to the main part that is needed in order to enjoy tanglad’s health benefits. It constitutes most of what appears of this plant above ground, as the leaves grow up to one meter in length, and are flat in shape.

Health Benefits

helps ease stomach discomfort

aids in lessening, if not totally curing toothache and sprain

prepared as a liniment to be also applied on sprains for easy healing. This can be done by chopping four ounces of the leaves and roots of tanglad and boiling them, along with fresh coconut oil

also serves as an insect repellant, (particularly mosquitoes) this can be achieved either by applying the liniment or by simply placing crushed tanglad leaves in strategic places at home including the window sills

possesses anti-bacterial activities and anti-fungal properties thus, eradicates ring worms

the calming effect derived from the scent it produces helps especially if such person is suffering from insomnia and stress

therapeutic value; aids in the relief of dysmenorrhea in women and from usual bouts of nausea

cleansing properties: a good option to detoxify the various internal organs, like the liver. It reduces the level of uric acid and of other toxins, as result; better blood circulation and better digestion as excess fats and cholesterol are cut down from the body

when infused, it effects significantly in the reduction and avoidance of acne and pimples as it tones the muscles and tissues and thus making the skin firmer

its properties allows it to be used as food flavouring. It is incorporated in a multitude of Asian cuisines and dishes and part of commercial beverages

So aside from the oil that can be extracted from lemon grass leaves, the fluid that is obtained from the boiled leaves of this plant proves to have medicinal purposes as well. Such lemon grass leaves can also be used in its raw form by mixing directly with the food before it is served. Such dishes include, and are especially good, when the primary ingredient is fish or poultry. Besides the health benefits, tanglad balances the chili flavorings in dishes, which makes eating a more enjoyable experience.

Banana

Bananas consist mainly of sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose) and fiber, which makes them ideal for an immediate and slightly prolonged source of energy.

Reducing Depression
Bananas contain tryptophan, an aminoacid that can be converted to serotonin, leading to improved mood.

Anemia
Bananas are relatively high in iron, which helps the body’s hemoglobin function.

Constipation and Diarrhea
Due to their content in fiber, they help restore a normal bowel function. In addition, diarrhea usually depletes your body of important electrolytes (of which the most important is potassium, contained in high amounts in bananas). They also contain pectin, a soluble fiber (hydrocolloid) that can help normalize movement through the digestive tract.

Eyesight Protection
Research published in the Archives of Ophthalmology has proven that adults consuming at least 3 servings of fruit per day have a reduced risk (by 36%) of developing age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), the primary cause of vision loss in older adults, compared to persons who consume less than 1.5 servings of fruit daily.

Healthy Bones
Bananas are an exceptionally rich source of fructooligosaccharide, a compound that nourishes probiotic
(friendly) bacteria in the colon. These beneficial bacteria produce enzymes that increase our digestive ability and protect us from unhealthy bacteria infections. Thanks to fructooligosaccharides, probiotic bacteria can increase both in number and functionality, increasing our body’s ability to absorb calcium. In addition, green bananas contain indigestible short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that are very nutrient to the cells that make up the mucosa of the stomach. These cells, when healthy, absorb calcium much more efficiently.

Healthy Kidney
About 190,000 cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed each year. Research published in the International Journal of Cancer has shown that daily consumption of whole fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, is highly protective to kidney health. The results show that, over a long timeframe (13.4 years), women eating
more than 2.5 servings of fruits and vegetable per day cut their risk of kidney cancer by 40%. Among the fruits, bananas were especially protective. Women eating bananas four to six times a week halved their risk of developing the disease compared to those who did not eat this fruit. The conclusion of the study is that frequent consumption of fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, cabbage and root vegetables, may reduce risk of kidney cancer. This is because bananas and many root vegetables contain especially high amounts of antioxidant phenolic compounds, while cabbage is rich in sulfur, necessary for effective detoxification of potential carcinogens.

Blood Pressure
Bananas are extremely high in potassium (about 4673mg), yet very low in sodium (1mg), thus having a perfect ratio for preventing high blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Heartburn
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood-sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Smoking
Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. They contain vitamins B6 and B12 they contain, as well as potassium and magnesium: these substances help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Ulcers
This is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicle cases. It also helps reduce acidity and reduces irritation. Bananas stimulate the cells on the internal stomach lining to produce a thicker mucus (which protects against acid). Additionally, bananas contain protease inhibitors that help eliminate bacteria in
the stomach that have been pinpointed as a primary cause of ulcers.

Nerves
Bananas are high in B vitamins that have been shows to improve nerve function.

Mosquito Bites
Many people report that rubbing the inside of a banana peel on a mosquito bite is very effective in reducing itching and swelling.

Stress Relief
Bananas are high in potassium, which helps normalize the hearthbeat and regulate the body’s water balance. During periods of high stress, our body’s potassium levels tend to be rapidly depleted: eating bananas is a healthy way to rebalance them without using drugs.

Stroke Risk
According to a study in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can reduce the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%.

Helps prevent diabetes

Arthritis

High blood pressure

Persons addicted to alcohol have found that the desire for liquor is greatly reduced by drinking of orange juice.

Consumption of large quantities of oranges will decrease the outpouring of mucus secretions from the nose.

Nutritional Contents of Orange :

Betacarotene, another powerful antioxidant that protects our cells from being damage.

Its leaves are flat and linear, with bulbs that consist of several tubers. This herb is one of the most widely used herbal medicines in the Philippines and can also be found commonly in the kitchen of Filipino households as it is used to spice up food preparations. The Philippine bawang or garlic variety is more pungent than the imported ones. Its medicinal properties have been known for a long time and have been especially proven during World War II when it was used to treat wounds and infections of soldiers. Garlic’s antibacterial compound known as allicin, saved many lives of the soldiers as this property prevented the wounds from being infected and developing into gangrene at a later stage by extracting the juice of bawang or garlic and applying to the wounds.

Its juices inhibit the growth of fungi and viruses thus, prevent viral, yeast, and infections. The preliminary test conducted on this medicinal herb showed some positive results in the treatment of AIDS. Several clinical tests that followed and published studies have shown the efficacy of garlic in lowering cholesterol in the blood and is beneficial to the circulatory system of the body. Today, as more research is done on garlic, more medicinal and therapeutic properties become more evident. As of the present time, lowering of the blood pressure, reduction of platelet aggregation, and the boosting of fibrinolytic activities are among the list of herbal functions of garlic, which is supported by medical findings. Although more clinical studies are needed to support the contention stronger, marked improvements in benign breast diseases have been traced to make progress because of the regular intake of supplements, of which the primary ingredient is garlic.

Although controlled trials in terms of anti-cancer activities of garlic have been performed in medical research, it has been proven through population-based studies that substances contain in garlic help in reducing the risk of some types of cancer. These would include colorectal malignancies, and gastric cancer. Regular consumption of raw garlic has been proven to aid in many bleeding cases, especially those cases that are associated with procedures in surgeries and dental activities. All these considered, it appears that garlic have no concrete scientific basis to claim a significant effect in the level of glucose in our blood. It is remarkable to note though that the Philippine Department of Health has endorsed garlic as one of the top ten Philippine herbs with therapeutic value and the department recommends its use as an alternative herbal medicine in view of the positive results of thorough research and testing, which had been conducted on this herbal plant. Juice extracted from garlic bulbs can be used as tick and mosquito repellant when applied to skin.

Fresh garlic applications to the skin have been reported to cause skin burns and rashes. This goes true both for those who are in the initial stages of their garlic therapies, and those who consume it as an ingredient in food preparations.

Guyabno

Guyabano, The Soursop Fruit has cancer curing abilities. The Sour Sop or the fruit from the graviola tree is a miraculous natural cancer cell killer 10,000 times stronger than Chemo. The taste is not bad after all. It’s completely natural and definitely has no side effects..

Guyabano is a tree called graviola in Brazil , guanabana in Spanish and has the uninspiring name “soursop” in English.

The fruit is very large and the subacid sweet white pulp is eaten out of hand or, more commonly, used to make fruit drinks, sherbets and such.

The principal interest in this plant is because of its strong anti-cancer effects. This plant is a proven cancer remedy for cancers of all types. Besides being a cancer remedy, graviola is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent for both bacterial and fungal infections, is effective against internal parasites and worms, lowers high blood pressure and is used for depression, stress and nervous disorders.

Research shows that with extracts from this miraculous tree it now may

be possible to:

Attack cancer safely and effectively with an all-natural therapy that does not cause extreme nausea, weight loss and hair loss

Protect your immune system and avoid deadly infections

Feel stronger and healthier throughout the course of the treatment

Boost your energy and improve your outlook on life

Effectively target and kill malignant cells in 12 types of cancer, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer..

The tree compounds proved to be up to 10,000 times stronger in slowing the growth of cancer cells than Adriamycin, a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug!

What’s more, unlike chemotherapy, the compound extracted from the Graviola tree selectively hunts down and kills only cancer cells.

Various parts of the Graviola tree–including the bark, leaves, roots, fruit and fruit-seeds–have been used for centuries by medicine men and native Indians in South America to treat heart disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis.

Going on very little documented scientific evidence, the company poured money and resources into testing the tree’s anti-cancerous properties–and were shocked by the results. Graviola proved itself to be a cancer-killing dynamo.

The National Cancer Institute performed the first scientific research in 1976.

The results showed that Graviola’s “leaves and stems were found effective in attacking and destroying malignant cells.” Inexplicably, the results were published in an internal report and never released to the public. Since 1976, Graviola has proven to be an immensely potent cancer killer in 20 independent laboratory tests, but as of now, no double-blind clinical trials.

A study published in the Journal of Natural Products, following a recent study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea stated that one chemical in Graviola was found to selectively kill colon cancer cells at “10,000 times the potency of (the commonly used chemotherapy drug) Adriamycin…”

The most significant part of the Catholic University of South Korea report is that Graviola was shown to selectively target the cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched.

Unlike chemotherapy, which indiscriminately targets all actively reproducing cells (such as stomach and hair cells), causing the often devastating side effects of nausea and hair loss in cancer patients.

A study at Purdue University recently found that leaves from the Graviola tree killed cancer cells among six human cell lines and were especially effective against prostate, pancreatic and lung cancers.

Note By Tom Coghill. This research looks good but cancer is never that easy to heal. It would be great to put this to the test. The juice would have to be fresh. The seeds have to be removed before blending or juicing.

Tawa-Tawa

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is a much feared disease caused by a virus carried via mosquito bites. Dengue causes hemorrhaging of the internal organs to a point that it causes death. Western medicine, the common hospital does not have a cure for Dengue. They merely say that their treatment is supportive and all you need to do is pray that the dengue victim is strong enough.

But in the Philippines, many people know and have attested to the fact that they and many others have been cured of dengue via a simple weed. This weed is called Gatas Gatas in the province of Leyte. But in Butuan City they call the same weed Tawa Tawa.

A case of a child named Jeremy at 7 years old came down with dengue fever. Immediately, relatives in Cagayan de Oro City who knew about the dengue cure Tawa Tawa sent via airplane a few handfuls of the weed. In 24 hours, a child was cured.

An herbalist’s in the government office NHA in Quezon City. There are lots of Tawa Tawa weeds growing around the NHA compound. Many NHA employees who have had trouble with dengue fever in their family have gone to Auntie Portia for help with the dengue cure. She picks a bunch of the Tawa Tawa weeds and gives it to the grateful employee that promptly cures every dengue case.

They planted a couple of Tawa Tawa weeds in our own garden. Just in case.
An herbalist recipe for curing Dengue Fever using Tawa Tawa weeds is as follows:

Take 5 to 6 full whole Tawa Tawa plants.

Cut off the roots

Wash and clean

Fill your boiling pot with clean water.

Boil the Tawa Tawa for 1 (one) minute in a slow rolling boil.

Pour the tawa tawa water and let cool.

Let the dengue fever victim drink only the tawa tawa water for 24 hours.

Sip 1 to 1.5 glasses of tawa tawa water every 1 hour

The internal hemorrhaging will stop and the dengue fever will be cured after 24 hours.
That’s it. Simple cure. Give it early enough. Tawa Tawa does not interfere with your western medical treatments. You can slip it in through to the patient in a water bottle. You do not need to ask permission from your doctor.

Health Benefits of Malunggay Leaves

The root bark has alkaloids, moringine which is quite similar to benzylamine. Best anti-oxidant (removing unstable free radicals) and source of amino acids and omega oil that is high in HDL ( high density lipoproteins).

Malunggay is the only herb which us a potential source of anti-cancer compounds that helps cure female reproductive disorders called the epithelial ovarian cancer.

Findings οf a study mаdе іn India, whісh wеrе used аѕ thе basis οf many news reports οn malunggay аѕ a marvel plant, states thаt malunggay contains anti-cancer compounds (phytochemicals) thаt hеƖр ѕtοр thе growth οf cancer cells.

Phytochemical compounds of Malunggay contains simple sugar, rhamnose and unique compounds called glucosinolates and isothiocyanates which is attributed to anti-cancer and hypotensive effects properties. In an extensive studies, it also contains compound for cancer prevention which is inhibitors of TPA ( phorbold easter- early antigen activation in lymphoma cells).

Also for skin tumor prevention by ingesting of malunggay seedpod extract and a reduction in skin papillomas was dramatically demonstrated. There is also possible role of the roots in epithelial ovarian cancer which studies suggests that it can interfere with hormone receptor and neoplastic growth-related pathways through acting mechanisms.

The effectiveness of malunggay in the treatment of ovarian cancer is attributed to a combination of anti-tumor and hormonal properties that can be found from the plant’s root bark extracts, according to the research.

It has highly rich in vitamins A, C, and E, which combat free radicals that can impair the body’s metabolism and eventually cause cell death, the research continues. Aside from cancer, the onset of other chronic diseases like arthritis, heart complications and kidney diseases can be prevented because of the potent antioxidants from malunggay.

Malunggay іѕ ѕаіd tο bе effectual іn treating ovarian cancer, аmοnɡ a host οf οthеr diseases Ɩіkе anemia, scurvy, asthma, аnd digestive disorders (ulcer, gastritis, diarrhea, colitis, dysentery).

HOW TO MAKE MALUNGGAY TEA

Malunggay tea processing is the method in which the leaves from Moringa oleifera are transformed into the dried leaves for brewing. Malunggay tea is considered a dietary source of important vitamins and minerals. Tea from malunggay is a healthy drink and contains a higher level of polyphenols (flavonoids), which are known for anti-oxidant activity.

Harvesting and collection of leaves for drying.

Harvesting is done by picking 2-3 younger green leaves and with no signs of yellowing of the compound leaves with snap. Collected leaves are placed in a tray before transporting them in a drying shade.

Sorting and cleaning.

Immediately after harvesting, collected leaves are cleaned and sorted out with un-necessary materials such as dust and laid out in a in a plastic tray or basket with 2-3 cm. fine mesh.

Air-drying

Air drying will last with in 2-3 days in a shade house and not sun dry for this will affect the quality of the tea if it is exposed to sun.

The tea leaves will begin to wilt soon after picking, with a gradual onset of enzymatic oxidation.

Air drying is used to remove excess water from the leaves and allows a very light amount of oxidation.

The leaves can be left in a cool breezy room to pull moisture out from the leaves. The leaves sometimes lose more of their weight in water during wilting.

Shaking in a screen or basket.

Shaking of dried leaves is done using a 0.2-0.3cm fine mesh in order to remove the leaf petioles that shed out during the drying period.

This process was done to eliminate the un-necessary materials that are incorporated in the dried leaves.

Pan drying

In pan drying, air dried malunggay leaves undergoes minimal oxidation via application of heat like dry cooking in a hot pans as done by traditional Chinese (Wikipedia, 2007).

This is done in 2-3 minutes of constantly turning over in a pan over a low fire.

This process is accomplished by moderately heating tea leaves, thus deactivating their oxidative enzymes, without destroying the flavor of the tea.

Great care must be taken to not over-cook the leaves.

However, freeze dry method can be done for the most common good tea making.

Packaging and Storage

Malunggay Tea leaves has a shelf-life that varies with storage conditions and loses its flavor quickly upon exposure to air.

It is a practice that the tea leaves should be packed into a small tea bag (usually paper).

It is easy and convenient, making tea bags popular for many people today.

Tea stays its freshness when packed and stored in a cool, dry, dark place.

Add hot water and let the malunggay tea leaves steep for 1-3 minutes.

MALUNGGAY ICED TEA BREWING METHOD

To make iced tea, double the amount of Malunggay tea leaves recommended on the basic tea brewing instructions.

Delicious and crunchy apple is one of the popular fruit that contain an impressive list of essential nutrients, which are required for normal growth and development and overall nutritional well-being.

Apples are low in calories; 100 g of fresh fruit slices provide only 50 calories. They are however contain no saturated fats or cholesterol; but rich in dietary fiber which helps prevent absorption of dietary LDL cholesterol in the gut. The dietary fibers also help protect the mucous membrane of the colon from exposure to toxic substances by binding to cancer causing chemicals in the colon.

Apple fruit contains good quantities of vitamin-C and beta carotene. Vitamin C is a powerful natural antioxidant. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals from the body.

Apples are rich in antioxidant phyto-nutrients flavonoids and polyphenols. The total measured anti-oxidant strength (ORAC value) of 100 g apple fruit is 5900 TE. The important flavonoids in apples arequercetin, epicatechin, and procyanidin B2. Apples are also good in tartaric acid that gives tart flavor to them. These compounds help body protect from deleterious effects of free radicals.

In addition, apple fruit is a good source of B-complex vitamins such as riboflavin, thiamin and pyridoxine (vitamin B-6). Together these vitamins help as co-factors for enzymes in metabolism as well as in various synthetic functions inside the body.

Apple also contains small amount of minerals like potassium, phosphorus and calcium. Potassium in an important component of cell and body fluids helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure; thus counters the bad influences of sodium.

Preparation and Serving tips
