Canvas Soap Bar now listed on Artfire

Just added Canvas soap bar to Artfire. These bars are made with Olive oil which is full of antioxidants. It is an excellent emollient that smoothes and softens the skin. It is non-greasy and penetrates the skin without clogging pores. Coupled with Coconut Oil which has excellent moisturizing properties.

These bars came out with tiny bubbles on the top from the Gel stage of the soap making process. Adds a bit of Character I think and will be gone once the bars are lathered.

The Slight line is from 2 seperate pours. I quite like the effect of that.

Making a “Natural Conditioner”

So I was making an Aloe lotion when I added to much water, the result was a bit runny, Usable, but runny. It sort of reminded me of Conditioner. That got me thinking. What is Hair conditioner anyway, if not a runny version of hand cream.
Thank God for the internet, I looked up the ingredients of Conditioner (not for the first time and probably not my last time either). This is what I found. Most conditioners contain these types of ingredients:
Moisturizer (Humectants) Like Glycerine attract moisture to hair
Reconstructor – Protein, amino acid (wheat protein)
Acidifiers– Citric Acid
Detanglers– Haven't found the active for this yet – I read that Detanglers
are acidifiers and are polymers
Thermal protector – Not found yet
Glosser - Light reflecting like Dimethicone, Silicones
Oil – Olive, Jojoba, Safflower, cocoa and Shea butter, Banana extract
Surfactant - Keratin
Sequestrants – Soften hard water (baking soda)
Lubricants – fatty alcohols, dimethicone, panthanol etc.
Anti Static agents – Some humectants can be used.

Now, I have the watery lotion, all I have to do now is add some of these additives and test on my 8 year old daughter ( she has very long tangle prone curly hair). I will only add natural plant derived ingredients so no cones, etc. I think that I can substitute it though for veg. Glycerine. I'll take some pictures and post later. I'll also let you know what I end up putting in there.

Balance “Chakra” Bars

The Balance bar was designed with the idea of just that "balance" each colour represents the 7 main chakras and the bars are lightly scented with Lotus flower essential oil. There is no artificial colour. Each colour layer is made using natural colourants so may appear a bit grainy. But for me that is what adds to the charm of this highly spiritual soap.

1^st Chakra - Is the Root Chakra, its colour is RED. It's effect is to calm and dissolve tension
2^nd Chakra - This is the "being" Chakra. It's colour is ORANGE. It stimulates desires and rejuvenates
3^rd Chakra - This one is about Self Esteem. It's colour is YELLOW. It eases aggression and brings peace.
4^th Chakra -The Heart. This one is GREEN. Also brings peace along with understanding.
5^th Chakra - The Throat. Blue. All things communication. Brings harmony to speech and voice.
6^th Chakra - Third Eye. Indigo. Understanding and Harmony. The Chakra of spirituality
7^th Chakra – Crowning Glory. VIOLET, WHITE OR GOLD. Living with knowledge and Unity.

Ok, so I was feeling a bit discouraged, starting a soap business in Canada is not easy, especially if you live in Ontario. BC and the United States are way ahead on this one. However, giving up is not something I do. Especially after all the money I have spent. I see other people doing it and wonder, is it just me. It shouldn't have to be this hard. I believe in the law of attraction, so my only choice is to look at my point of attraction. But I'll talk about that another day.

So, feeling sort of down, I surf the net for information about anything related to business, soap, healthcare, handmade, the usual. What do I find? An article about the "10 secrets of the successful person"

Think Success
Be passionate about what you do
Focus on your strengths
Never consider the possibility of failure
Plan
Work hard
Network
Be willing to learn
Persevere and have faith
Discipline yourself

I would say that is a very good list. I would have to say I have most if not all of those characteristics, so what is the problem? I sit in silence, it hits me, what have I been talking about all week with my clients (not related to soap clients) Support!!!! A very critical thing is to have the support of someone, a mentor, a good friend, husband, or wife, someone who just believes that this is possible for you and gives you the motivation and support whenever you might need that extra bit of encouragement. No man is an Island. Someone very successful had said that she didn't get to where she is by herself, it took people in positions able to promote her, put her on the air, give her the chance to become who she is today. This to me is more than networking. It's having people close to you who are able to advance you, emotionally and professionally.

Starting a business is time consuming and for me, not easy, but well worth it!!

The first picture was melting oils. I made the lye solution with water and one ounce of the Helichrysum Water and set aside

After I melted the oils and while everything was cooling, I made a green slurry with French green clay 3 tbsp, Helichrysum oil – 5 drops, Rosehip seed oil – 1 oz and added the EO I used to fragrance.

When the oils and lye reached 115 degrees, I slowly drizzled the lye solution into the oils. Once the oils reached a really light trace I separated the oils into two batches. One smaller batch and one large batch. The smaller batch was around 3 oz. Now I realize that was too much and I'll use less next time I make a swirl. I mixed the small batch with Titanium dioxide and one oz of Helichrysum Water, the other I mixed with the green slurry.

I poured the green batch in and then the white. I alternated and this is what came out.

The green is much greener in person, and the soap is soft. I cut one bar, but it was too soft. I'll wait over night and see how hard the bar gets tomorrow. I unmolded after 18 hours.

Swirling soap

Ok, so I made a new recipe. I have to say now that it is all said and done, I don`t think I will be making this soap again. I might, we`ll see.

THE RECEIPE

OLIVE OIL- 13.30 oz
RICE BRAN- 8 oz
GRAPE SEED- 3.80 oz
COCONUT-7.60 oz

Lye -4.42 oz
Water- 8.48 F oz
Helichrysum Water – 2 oz

Additives
French green clay 3 tbsp
Helichrysum oil – 5 drops
Rosehip seed oil – 1 oz
Titanium Dioxide – 2 tsp

Fragrance .98 oz

So, I've been pondering the question someone raised to me recently, why buy handmade products when you can go to the store and buy the same thing, even at the dollar store. Well, R they the same?? NO, of course not.
I can't speak for other brands but since I make all of the products Soul Scentsibility sells I can safely say the Soul Scentsibility products are high end quality sans the synthetic ingredients.

How we determine what goes into our Products

More hours are spent then I care to admit looking at the ingredients that different high end brands use. The most common being Dimethicone, Methylparaben, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate all types of Parabens in general. Formaldehyde based preservatives, Mineral oil and the list could go on for miles. Now, the reason these not so great for us additives are used is because they impart some quality that the products needs, like shelf life, slip, glossy feeling, they can reduce the greasiness of the oils used etc. These synthetic ( not found in nature as is) additives are cheap and affordable to use. Cheaper then their natural counterpart anyway. The price of the finished product remains just as high as they would if the natural product were used, except those involved with the company get all the profit. So who really benefits, skin wise that is.

Now I'm not saying that using raw natural material is always the best options. But sometimes in an effort to "keep up with the Jones" we in the cosmetic industry are always looking for ways to "out last" the competition. This leads to the invention of more outrageous synthetic ingredients that did not exist 5 years ago. Do we really need all this??. So back to my original point.

Soul Scentsibility looks at the synthetic ingredients that impart some specific quality to the product and finds the natural counter part. Nothing fancy or mysterious, Just good ingredients.

That's why our products can compete in the market yet we can be true to our vision of providing quality body care products while being aware of environmental concerns.

Insurance Part 2

OK, so, now I have found some companies that will insure small companies that manufacture and sell soaps and other body products in Canada. There is only one small catch. You can't sell to Americans - the United States that is. So, if you want to grow your business with these insurance people you are out of luck. Also, if I have an e-business, since I can't 100% guarantee that Americans won't buy my product, some companies won't insure you at all. Luckily, I love a challenge.

There has got to be something for small to mid sized business to help them grow and if there is something I intend to find it. So, my search continues......... If the yearly prices of the insurance don't kill me the limitations just might.

But I've put it out to the universe to bring me a solution. I'll keep you posted ;-)

Rice Bran Oil

So, from what I have been reading online, Rice bran oil is said to be rich in vitamin E, stimulates collagen production and relieves itchy skin. It is also said that this multipurpose oil has some sunscreen properties and is used in Japan as such. Soul Scentsibility uses Rice Bran Oil in our face and other soap bars and we continue to search for sustainable unique oils to provide our customers with the best products we can get our little hands on.

This may just be the right oil to substitute for olive oil in lotions. If it does what I have read it does then why not. Look for it coming soon.
