All of us had trouble sleeping before and after the surgery. Pets, once in your life, there is a fine line between being just an animal and being a family member. I felt bad knowing she had no idea she was about to have major surgery on her knee and the pain she would endure following the operation.

When she was home the next day, it was scary to see her on pain killers. Her normally elegant and thin head was puffy and swollen from the medication. She would stand and stare. Her refusal to eat, left me worried. I opened a can of tuna. Nothing helped. Emily was just feeling rotten from all the meds.

The next day, we stopped all medicine and bought some canned food. Finally she ate.

Now she is doing well. After we took off the very appropriate and girly pink wrapping, I made a leg warmer for her. It's nice to know my sewing has finally payed off and I made something useful.

She had a check-up 3 days ago and Dr. Bob was very pleased. Emily puts some weight on her foot when she walks and there is no fluid in her knee. Good signs.

Embrace the wind...

I realize I just posted an Illustration Friday but here is this weeks, Plain.

I thought of the Great Plains, but this image of the snow and the fence runs clear in my mind.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend. I like the idea of Self Portrait Challenge but I have never been a big self portraitist. Never have I been one to explore the way I look, through painting or photos. I feel I know who I am, and it usually it has nothing to do with my looks. Others have different opinions about this and that is totally cool. Look at Egon Schiele.

So Illustration Friday gives a topic for the week, and here is mine. The topic this week is Stitch. and here is Winterbird. She is a real stitched bird as a sort of crafty project.

there go the delicates...

This week I have been hostess for Just Be Connected. Today I posted a challenge and I wanted to share it with all of you too. I thought this might be a nice getting out of the winter blahs project. (or summer blahs in the Southern Hemisphere mate) Think of what your favorite number is and then go out and look for it in the world around you. Take a picture then post it. Come back here and leave a comment, with a link to your post. I would like to collectively put these all together. She’s such a happy girl. Her idea of a good walk is if a complete stranger comes over to her and pets her. (This poses a problem for me sometimes.) One Sunday morning I had her on a walk, it was snowing and not many people were out. Emily spotted an older woman going into a bank ATM, and she made sure we walked over to the bank door and waited until the woman came out. I felt bad because I didn't want this woman to think we were going to rob her. The woman came out smiling and telling Emily she was a pretty girl. The woman laughed when I told her my dog wanted to say hi.

I’m not sure of resolutions this year. Mostly I try to eat better and get plenty of exercise. Oh and trying to always finish the books I have started. I did a pretty good job last year.

I found the article below in a wellness magazine and wanted to share. Peace and love and happy new year!

Protect the earth for our children and future generations.

Reduce your meat intake by 50 percent, to lessen deforestation for cattle grazing.

Have one car free day a week.

If you have children, try to work from home at least one day a week, so you can be with them more.

Try to be mindful about how your consumption affects the earth and other people.

Thich Nhat Hanh

When the goin’ gets tough, they can kiss my...

I'm trying to clean everything up a bit in the apartment before the new year. It's out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new mentality. I sort have adapted Chinese New Year philosophy into our own.

So in spirit of that, I also have to clean house in my mind and air all of my grievances from 2007. I usually don't complain, and I most always try to stay on the sunny side of life. But I have to do this, then I will move on. The list is composed a’la David Letterman style.

Top 10 worst things about 2007 for us
10 — Countrywide Home Mortgage
9 — Any one that is associated with buying and selling homes. Meaning lawyers, brokers, agents, loan officers, and city municipalities that force home owners to abide by ridiculous laws passed in the middle of the night. They are all shysters.
8 — Peekskill Water Department
7 — Not getting paid for our first wedding
6 — Having to remove an oil tank from our driveway
5 — Not being able to continue our wedding project the way I intended
4 — Having my calculator (that Joseph bought for me from MOMA) stolen by a spoiled teenager, whose parents make more in one year than Joseph and I will make in a lifetime. Thanks a lot, jerk ass.
3 — Dorothy
2 — The Guggenheim won't return my calls
1 — Emily tore a ligament in her back right knee. She now needs surgery that will cost more than we have.

Thanks Ted Nugent for the title lyrics!

Emily tries but misunderstands...

Yesterday we celebrated our Emily's birthday. To everyone else, again they are sorry.

There is a certain member of our family that is acting inappropriately. It's horribly rude and selfish to call so late and demand information from relatives. Calling over and over, leaving messages is embarrassing. At first my chosen obsessions were limited to the typical things a teen or pre-teen (geek of my age) would be interested in: the Beatles, Star Wars, Marvel Comics. The whole "interest in girls" thing which followed threw everything off kilter, and out of perspective, for a while.

Some of my more recent obsessions: Steely Dan and the "lost" Gaucho album, and cartoonists Chas. Addams and Charles Schultz. You may know Addams from the Addams Family or his brilliant New Yorker cartoons. A complicated man with some very interesting and sad relationships. What got me into Schultz is that a cursory reading of stories and interviews with him led me further into a person of great depth. You might not be aware of this if you are casually associated with his strip Peanuts (a title he despised), but rediscovering the strip as an adult makes me appreciate it even more (maybe not so much the later years).

Below is a piece he wrote in You Don't Look 35, Charlie Brown! It's kind of unexpected from someone who wrote comics. And not likely something you'd hear from someone as well known.
There must be different kinds of loneliness, or at least different degrees of loneliness.... The most terrifying loneliness is not experienced by everyone and can be understood only by a few. I compare the panic in this kind of loneliness to the dog we see running frantically down the road pursuing the family car. He is not really being left behind, for the family knows it is to return, but for that moment in his limited understanding, he is being left alone forever, and he has to run and run to survive. It is no wonder that we make terrible choices in our lives to avoid loneliness.

Had swept the winter street...

These are the days that reindeer love
And pranks the northern star,
This is the sun's objective
And Finland of the year.

Emily Dickenson

New stuff

50 small paintings show. Not the most ideal conditions. I was excited about our first wedding, but I was not looking forward to "camping out" in freezing temperatures. My mom was worried and I was too. I'm a weather fanatic. I know what it's like on the Great Lakes in late fall. I was prepared, though. Everyone had snow boots, coats and tons of clothes to layer. Sidd man the cat stayed home. I'm sure Emily would have loved to have stayed home too, but since she isn't a 9lb cat but a 50lb dog she was forced to tough it out with the rest of us. The great city of Buffalo was the halfway point we tried, and didn't quite make it to.

We pretty much stayed on I-90 all the way. A barn that had been restored. Despite some farm equipment and a very menacing stuffed raccoon, it was very sweet. The raccoon was a little funny.

I loved Rita and Edwin reciting e.e. cummings poem i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart).

And both of their boys were the ring bearers.

Rita's mom gave her away, and I loved that too. I wish would have had my mom give me away instead of my uncle.

I got to met all of her brothers and another blogger-Hotmama. She was a crazy woman and made me laugh. Her and her husband, along with 3 of their 7 children, oh yes and a stowaway cat were there as well.
