It is estimated that more than 110 million active landmines are scattered across 70 countries around the world. An equal number of landmines are stockpiled, waiting to be planted. These landmines remain active for decades and kill thousands of people each month … most of them women and children.

Colombia has a major landmine problem
Colombia is at constant war due to anti-government rebellions and, as a result, a lot of the area is infested with landmines. According to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), Colombia is the second-most mined country in the world after Afghanistan.

Groundbreaking technology introduces life-saving solution
Lemur Studio, a Bogota, Colombia-based design firm, has designed a life-saving solution called SaveOneLife. The SaveOneLife boot inserts can detect landmines from a distance of 6.5 feet. The design has already received numerous awards.

How does it work?
SaveOneLife is equipped with tiny microprocessors that pick up electromagnetic signals produced by a large metal object like a landmine. Embedded radio transmitters then send a message to a wristband interface.
The wristband interface alerts wearers if they come within a 6.5 foot radius of a landmine by displaying the exact location of the mine on a small screen, ruling out the need for any guesswork.
Lemur Studio is currently trying to gain much-needed funding for the project by pitching its concept to the military. If successful, this product could soon be saving innocent peoples’ lives every day.

Austrian banks won't support Hypo Alpe Adria 'bad bank': finance minister

(Reuters) - Commercial banks will not support a "bad bank" to absorb toxic assets from ailing nationalised lender Hypo Alpe Adria, Austrian Finance Minister Michael Spindelegger said on Monday.

"It became clear that this bank involvement and privatisation model de facto is not possible," he told reporters after a meeting on whether the government could get through its preferred option for handling the lender. The state would now review other options, including a state-run bad bank, and had not ruled out an insolvency, he said.

Austrian central bank Governor Ewald Nowotny said that a state-run bad bank for Hypo should not increase Austrian debt spreads. He renewed his opposition to letting Hypo go bust.

This is part of a series of articles that looks at entrepreneurs hoping to get their ideas off the ground through crowdfunding. At the time of writing, each of these innovations is currently seeking funding.

When it comes to showing something on your phone to friends or co-workers, it’s not always ideal to have them crowd round the small screen size of typical mobile devices. While it’s possible to push the display to larger screens such as connected TVs, the element of touch control is still limited to the smartphone. Currently seeking funding on Indiegogo, TouchPico is a device that can wirelessly project an 80″ display from Android smartphones, with a touch interface.

The device is a highly-portable projector around the same size as the Samsung Galaxy S4. When connected to an Android phone over wifi, the projector is able to display its contents on any suitable surface up to 80 inches in size. Using the Touchpaper stylus, users can interact with their phone using the projected display, meaning they don’t need to carry out tasks on one screen while everyone else is looking at the larger display. Businesses can present their meetings in a more interactive way and educators can let kids use apps and games collaboratively on a large screen. On top of this, TouchPico can simply be used as a basic handheld projector for laptops and other computers.

TouchPico is available to pre-order via Indiegogo for the special price of USD 329, or can be reserved for that price for a USD 99 deposit. The crowdfunding campaign will run until 26 August, after which the device is set to have a full retail price tag of USD 499. The Bad The PadFone X, When combined has a clunky design but unfortunately its rear-camera loses a few some features. The device also comes with a non removable battery and a lot of bloatware

The Bottom Line Although it has last year's specification, the PadFone X combines two mobile devices into one easy convenient form at a very affordable price tag.

ASUS PadFone 'phablet'

The ASUS PadFone is a smartphone manufactured by ASUS. The phone is marketed with companion tablet dock and keyboard dock accessories intended to improve battery life and overall functionality.

Released in April 2012, the ASUS PadFone It fits into a 7-inch tablet dock. Although it's not the same as the ASUS PadFone mini 4.3, revealed in December 2013 by ASUS. Since that operates on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and is skinned with the ASUS' ZenUI.

The ASUS PadFone has a 4-inch WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) IPS+ LED-backlite display, the ASUS PadFone mini has a8-megapixel 'PixelMaster' rear f/2.0 BSI camera, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 8GB of built-in storage, and a 4.5Wh 1170mAh non-removable polymer battery.

The successor to this phone is the PadFone 2, which was released in October 2012. It featured a 4.7 inch Super IPS+ screen with HD (1280×720) resolution.

· The successor to the PadFone 2 is the PadFone Infinity, which was released in April 2013. It featured a 5 inch Super IPS+ screen with Super HD display, (1920 x 1200) resolution with 441 ppi.

Other than its predecessors, there's nothing quite like the Asus PadFone X. As a smartphone/tablet (and sometimes even laptop!) hybrid, it is an amalgamation of two devices aiming to give users the most seamless and efficient mobile experience.

Measuring 5.67 inches tall and 2.85 inches wide, the handset is comfortable to hold, and easy maneuverable with one hand.With it's brushed-aluminum design it sports tapered edges that adds just a dash of style to the otherwise bland-looking device. However, at 0.39 inch thick and weighing 5.29 ounces, it's a bit heftier than most high-end 5-inch phones.

With a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top edge , and a sleep/power button and a volume rocker to the right . It has a Micro-USB port flanked by two circular ports at the bottom , which are used for plugging into the tablet dock. Located on the back is a 13-megapixel lens with accompanying flash, and a barely there speaker grille right below it.

AutoPagerLite Usage

AutoPagerLite is recommended then the AutoPager normal version. It uses less memory and CPU since it
downloads only the selected rules to your machine instead of download all rules from the repositories.

You can refer to AutoPager repository modes on how to change repository modes.
You can use the "search site online" function in the AutoPager menu or button popup.

We added the rules discovery for AutoPager normal version from version 0.6.0.26. It will try to check whether
there are some experimental rules for the sites. An experimental rule is a rule submitted by other AutoPager users,
pending review in our repository. We had provide a repository site for you to choose the rules for your
AutoPagerLite. AutoPagerLite will ask whether you want to enable the automatically discovery at first run.

It downloads the URL patterns for all the supported sites in the repository, and use then to figure out whether
there is a rule for the site you are surfing. It will display the matched rule count into the status bar, right to the
AP icon.

You can click the AutoPager toolbar icon or the rule count right to the AutoPager status bar icon (if you enable
automatically discovery) to open the online rules repository.

You can click the Select All, Disable All or click the check box before each rule to enable/disable the rules.
You will see this at the bottom right of the screen after enable/disable some rules:

You can click on it to close the rules repository and try the rules on the previous tab. You may need to reload
the tab to apply the new rules. On Fennec:

This can be enable/disable at Tools->AutoPager->Options->Discover matched rules online

You can follow this tutorials to add new rules to AutoPager for Chrome before we port more rules management
features to AutoPager For Chrome.

Five Trends That Are Going to Affect Marketing in 2014

Marketing has gotten more complex.

The tactics that worked even a few short years ago are now obsolete. It’s becoming clear that iterative sprints leveraging mobile, social and location-based approaches and powered by data and insights, are required in order to thrive. Agile marketing is now a common approach, and includes a healthy loop of building, testing, measuring, learning, refining and improving.

There are five trends that you need to be on the lookout for when creating your marketing plans in the coming year, a combination of focus on results and a set of new channels that can connect directly to the bottom line.

Trend #1: The need to tie marketing to results

A new survey commissioned by Adobe of 1,000 US marketers shows that marketers are most concerned about reaching customers and being able to understand whether their campaigns are working and effective. They also overwhelmingly feel that companies won’t succeed unless they have a strong digital marketing approach.

Also noted was that Social Media Marketing is projected to be the most important area to marketers over the next three years, ranking significantly ahead of other areas like digital advertising (The question, as phrased, was “What do you think will be the most important to marketers in the next three years?”)

After years of hiding behind soft marketing metrics, it’s also increasingly clear that the “so what” matters, a lot. Three of the top four items that those surveyed are concerned about have to do with measurement and ROI. (The four top items were “reaching customers,” “understanding whether campaigns are working,” “proving campaign effectiveness” and “demonstrating marketing return on investment”).

The bottom line is that results matter.

Trend #2: The rise of social+video

Pew Research has published a new report on the state of online video, and it’s a eye-opener. From the report: “Over the past four years, the percent of American adult internet users who upload or post videos online has doubled from 14% in 2009 to 31% today. That includes 18% of adult internet users who post videos they have created or recorded themselves—many of whom hope their creations go viral. The share of online adults who watch or download videos has also grown from 69% of internet users in 2009 to 78% today, and mobile phones have become a key part of the video viewing and creating experience.”

Key findings include:

• 78% of adult internet users watch or download online videos, up from 69% in 2009

• The percent of online adults using video-sharing sites has grown from 33% to the current figure of 72%

• The percentage of adult internet users who post videos online is growing rapidly

Trend #3: Relentless analytics

As marketing moves to a more data-driven approach in 2014, it is essential to have analytics tools in place that allow measurement of the effectiveness of the tests and tactics you are deploying. Google Analytics in combination with Google Webmaster Tools is a good way to start. Additionally, there is a whole range of useful tools to perform A/B testing including Optimizely and Unbounce, funnel metric tracking like Mixpanel and KISSmetrics, and user feedback tools like Qualaroo and SurveyMonkey.

Two tools that belong in every toolkit are Google Analytics and Facebook Insights (and they’re free).

Google Analytics: Signing up is free and all you need to do is drop a few lines of code into all the pages you intend to track. Make sure to explore event tracking on buttons and links and creating “goals” that map paths through your website and their corresponding action (eg. sign-up or download).

Facebook Insights: Facebook has some good insights about your Facebook profile, demographics and usage via their Facebook Insights tool; also recommended is claiming your domain via “Insights for your Website.” This provides further data on actions where people have posted a link to your site, how often posts with a link to your site have been viewed and how many people have clicked through to your site from Facebook (aka referral traffic).

In addition to the tools noted above, many social sites including Twitter, App.net, Pinterest and others also allow you to claim your domain to receive more detailed analytics and insight on engagement and traffic generated through those platforms.

Trend #4: Content curation vs. content creation

Two of the biggest social media success stories of 2013 were BuzzFeed and Upworthy. In addition to both having breakout success this year, the other thing that these two sites have in common is a focus on content curation and presentation of that curated content, versus content creation. In both cases, finding the content that mattered to their audiences and sharing that content in a meaningful way trumped creating their own content from ground zero.

The great stuff is already out there in the long tail (and there will always be a larger number of great pieces of content outside the walls of your organization than created within them). As marketers in 2014, honing your workflow for content curation, packaging and sharing will be as significant, or even more significant, than content creation itself.

Trend #5: The increasing ramp of inbound marketing efforts

Inbound marketing is a highly effective way to generate awareness, convert customers and give advocates something to talk about. In a world where advertising is increasingly “tuned out,” the creation and sharing of media and publishing content is paramount to achieving business goals.

Inbound marketing focuses on online channels and their usage. By providing value in the form of information and making that information findable via search (SEO) as well as distributing it through social channels, prospective customers learn about the brand driven by their interests, rather than as a result of interruption marketing or outbound cold calls.

Between content curation and content creation efforts, inbound marketing efforts should be aligned with the channels that are most connected with your community. The mix of inbound marketing outreach activities varies by channel, but a good place to start is with a balanced approach along the lines of:

Blog posts : 1-3 times per week, with content useful to your customers
Social media distribution : Share content to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Slideshare, Medium, Reddit, Quora, StumbleUpon, Tumblr etc., based on which channels are most relevant to your prospects and customers

A research team specialising in security has revealed that the form of Ransomeware, Cryptolocker, could have managed to infect anywhere between 200,000 to 250,000 devices and could also have collected over £600,000 ($980,000, AU$1,000,000) in the virtual currency Bitcoin.

Dell’s SecureWork’s specialist counter-threat unit has scrutinised the infection rates of Cryptolocker and claims that the malware has been developed in either Russia or Eastern Europe. The earliest infection this year would have happened around 4 months ago (September 5) this year. But just how the malware is distributed is still unclear.

Ransomware is a successful new variety of malware and virus that finds and locks away system/essential files on a victim’s computer. The encrypted files are held locked away until the user meets the demands of payment within 72 hours – displayed ominously in the form of an on-screen timer. What is more worrying is that, it targets, mapped drives and all locally connected, network attached or cloud-based storage such as Dropbox.

Unlike traditional malware, which can be removed with the use of antivirus software, Cryptolocker cannot currently be removed. If a user can root out the virus, there is still no way to access the files, which it encrypts. All decryption keys are located on one of Cryptolocker servers; the files are only released again, if the user pays the ransom.

“By using a sound implementation and following best practices, the authors of Cryptolocker have created a robust program that is difficult to circumvent,” SecureWorks notes in a blog post. “Instead of using a custom, cryptographic implementation like many other malware families, Cryptolocker uses strong third-party certified cryptography offered by Microsoft’s CryptoAPI.”

Audaciously, Cryptolocker also has its own dedicated support system for people who pay their ransom but miss the deadline! There have been reports of the author of the program actively answering help question on online forums.

Dell’s SecureWorks estimates that the Ransomware has infected 250,000 systems in the first 100 days of its active lifecycle.

In this series I'll be showing how to crank up your conversion rate by keeping visitors engaged every step of the way through your fashion retail website. This week’s focus – the browsing pages.

The window shopper. A perennial tease for high-street retailers. They will ransack and rummage, browse but not buy, and are always but a breath away from their signature catch-phrase, “I don't need help, I'm just browsing"…ugh.

Online however, the window shopper has capacity to frustrate ten times as many people at once, most commonly seen flitting between numerous tabs, joyously humming and hawing over this and that. So it will come as no surprise that product pages are where fashion retailers see the highest level of customer drop-off.

While converting each and every customer who touches down onsite is optimistic to the point of delusion, there are measures you can take to make the customer’s path through your site that much smoother – turning more browsers into buyers.

Search and Filter
Over the course of various studies and surveys, a lot of time and effort have been spent on how best to direct people around your product pages, and the results are…inconclusive. Some online shoppers prefer a search box, others prefer navigational tools. So the answer is - incorporate both.

A search box that’s complimented by a filtering system will allow customers to best refine their aim, and explore your product range. It’s vital to make sure that both of these functions are strong, to cater for all shoppers. Shop the Look or Trend work very well for the trend-hunters out there, giving them confidence to build the outfit and choose their key pieces.

Most importantly, avoid the “No Results Found” message at all costs. Appropriately tagging your products will help banish those three nasty words from your site for good. For instance it’s all well and good describing a dress onsite as a Florence Colour Block Dress in Cashmere, but if you don’t also tag it as Grey Dress then it will go unnoticed by the search function, hiding it from many of your less au fait users.

Pictures with Personality
Shopping is a tactile business and the inability to feel and play with the garments is a big drawback in shopping online. Fluid voluminous shapes enhanced with glittering embellishments, mosaic prints or metallic jacquard fabrics would all undoubtedly look great in your store, yet will such items of such personality be as fabulous online?

They can, but not with a static jpeg.

Images should be interactive, allowing customers to rotate and zoom in on the products as they please. This will give customers a more detailed look for sure, but in terms of judging how a piece sits and flows, there is no competing with video. ASOS are one of the industry benchmarks is this regard.

Although they can’t fully replicate actually trying the garments on in store, having interactive images and a strong video display will take much of the risk out of the buying decision for the customer - making your product pages more engaging, which will always lead to more sales.

Precise Placement
Placing recommendations on product pages is a useful way to keep people on site. They remove the dead ends in the user’s journey while shining a broader light on your product range. But don’t use recommendations that will confuse the customer, or products that have limited sizes. Think about what has most likely drawn the customer to the garment in the first place (the hem-line, the neck-line, the colour etc) and select the accompanying pieces accordingly.

Additionally you can help buyers complete the look by displaying supplementary products, not similar ones. Always point customers towards the upsell.

Customer uncertainty is a very destructive force in the buying process, as most individuals enjoy justification before settling on an item - and that’s why product reviews are so valuable in ecommerce.

‘Social proof’ is the concept that people will conform to the actions of others under the assumption that those actions represent the right way to act. In other words - other people are doing it, I trust those people, so that's validation that I should also be doing it. Simplistic and borderline degrading for the human race, but in many cases true.

Third-party validation is a very powerful motivator, and reviews will give your products an endorsement that’s beyond even your marketing team’s best campaign.

As our storage needs grow with regards to the data we cannot manage without when on our travels, so does the need for increased speed to handle the extra data. To satisfy this dual need, Lexar has come up with its JumpDrive solution with support for the latest USB 3.0 technology. Along with its JumpDrive S23 flash stick product line-up, Lexar has also developed a JumpDrive P10 product. Available in 16, 32 and 64GB capacities, this JumpDrive series comes with the promise of providing some of the fastest USB flash stick performance that's currently available.

With this particular retractable flash drive, Lexar is aiming it at a business user who requires capacity, speed and a more professional appearance. This more business-like approach can be seen with the decision to stick with a single colour scheme for all the range. You get a black lacquered front with a shiny silver backing. A slider bar, with a centrally mounted button on the front of the flash drive, needs to be depressed slightly in order to extend and retract the USB contact element that slots into the appropriate port on a computer. A pair of holes near the base of this device allows you to attach a supplied keyring lanyard to help secure this JumpDrive when in transit. A steady hand and good vision will be required when attaching this lanyard.

With dimensions of 64 x 22 x 10 mm (H x W x D) and weighing 123g, the JumpDrive P10 is eminently portable. The outer casing is constructed from metal alloy, which gives the device a reassuring and substantial feel to it that will appeal to its targeted market user. According to Lexar, the 32GB model that is under review should be capable of delivering a read speed of up to 265MB/s and a write speed of up to 245MB/s. Not unnaturally, this was a claim that I needed to put to the test with various collections of files.

I gathered together four groups of files that were classified as documents, images, MP3 tracks and videos. I then used the standard copy-and-paste procedure to transfer these files between the JumpDrive P10 and a Windows system running 64-bit Windows 7 Professional on a 3.07GHz processor with 3GB of RAM and vice versa using a USB 3.0 port. The results I achieved can be seen in the table below.

Generally, I was satisfied with the results achieved apart from the read times for MP3 tracks, which were stored in individual folders under a master folder, and videos. Both these times were slightly slower than those I achieved with the JumpDrive S23. I have no idea why this discrepancy in the results occurred, as the files being transferred and the host system was exactly the same apart from the Lexar element of the equation.

Gamma’s software is entirely separate, and only uses our brand and trademarks to lie and mislead as one of its methods for avoiding detection and deletion.
Through the work of the Citizen Lab research team, we believe Gamma’s spyware tries to give users the false impression that, as a program installed on their computer or mobile device, it’s related to Mozilla and Firefox, and is thus trustworthy both technically and in its content. This is accomplished in two ways:

When a user examines the installed spyware on his/her machine by viewing its properties, Gamma misrepresents its program as “Firefox.exe” and includes the properties associated with Firefox along with a version number and copyright and trademark claims attributed to “Firefox and Mozilla Developers.”
For an expert user who examines the underlying code of the installed spyware, Gamma includes verbatim the assembly manifest from Firefox software.

The Citizen Lab research team has provided us with samples from the following three instances that demonstrate how this misuse of our brand, trademarks and public trust is a designed feature of Gamma’s spyware products and not unique to a single customer’s deployment:

A spyware attack in Bahrain aimed at pro-democracy activists;
The recent discovery of Gamma’s spyware apparently in use amidst Malaysia’s upcoming General Elections; and
A promotional demo produced by Gamma.

Each sample demonstrates the exact same pattern of falsely designating the installed spyware as originating from Mozilla. Gamma’s own brochures and promotional videos tout one of the essential features of its surveillance software is that it can be covertly deployed on the person’s system and remain undetected.
Unfortunately, Mozilla is no stranger to the misuse of our brand. We've fought against companies that use our trademarks to deceive users into downloading malware, providing personal information or paying for Firefox, sometimes in a highly organized and syndicated fashion. Not only are these activities illegal, but we take them seriously because they are deceptive, harm users, cause consumer confusion, and jeopardize Mozilla’s reputation.
We’re grateful for the important work of groups such as Citizen Lab, Privacy International, European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights and Reporters without Borders, and encourage anyone interested in the growing prevalence and societal implications of online surveillance to support their efforts.

Becoming an authority in your industry can be a great way to promote your business and help you better serve your clients. It takes a consistent dose of education and risk, but the rewards can be well worth the effort.

Why? Becoming a go-to person for industry leadership should incentivize potential clients to seek out your wealth of knowledge. The bottom line is that authority can lead to profitability.
Here are seven steps that can allow anyone to develop a reputation as an industry leader:
1. Think like a leader. For entrepreneurs, this might go without saying, but your life and business will change the moment you begin to think like a leader. Leaders aren't focused on trying to maintain the status quo. They're focused on doing what must be done to ensure growth and profitability in the future, which is not an easy road to take.

2. Innovate. New things get noticed. This means you can't be afraid to present something new to your market, even if it's just a variation or an addition to an already-existing product or service. Simply innovating doesn't guarantee success, but you'll learn far more from the risks you take than by maintaining the status quo.

3. Keep the lines of communication open. Your clients are critical to your business. Don't lose touch with who they are and why they've chosen to do business with you. That means call or send a friendly email every couple weeks to stay in contact. This also means you keep up with key employees who interact with your clients on a day-to-day basis. The moment you lose touch with your market, you're done.
4. Publicly address industry changes. Every industry has changes that affect the way business is done. Strive to address these changes through an online platform such as a company blog. Detail your opinion, along with tangible ways to make the most of it. This can allow you to be seen as an industry leader and potentially increase traffic to your site as people begin to search out information and answers about these changes.
5. Respect your time. Being an authority doesn't mean you must solve everyone's problems. Your main responsibility is to continue growing, innovating and sharing your knowledge. Don't allow people to suck up all your time with their questions or problems. Learn to say "no" more often. Yes, you want to assist people, but not at the expense of losing your edge or slowing down your innovation.
6. Develop your intuition. The most successful leaders I know have learned to "trust their gut." But this doesn't happen overnight. It takes practice to learn when it's your gut talking or when it's just fear or pride. Your business life requires you to make difficult decision and sacrifices. Just remember that your intuition should get a vote, too. It's not always about numbers and statistics.
7. Keep learning. Industry leaders are students of their craft. Study the great success and failures of your industry. Also learn from people outside of your industry to see which principles are transferable to what you're doing. I know the phrase "never stop learning" is nothing new, but are you really practicing it?
