Philippine Blues is Alive!

2012-07-17T05:04:00.000-07:00

After several decades of dormancy, the Blues seed planted by our 'fathers' has now germinated. Presenting, the Philippine Blues Society (P.B.S.) -- the best thing that ever happened to Pinoy Blues!!! Alongside is the creation of the official PBS website, which can be accessed HERE. I'll be spending most of my blogging hours maintaining this new site and so I'll be temporarily signing off from Blues Pinoy -- but I'll still be doing updates once in a while.

Santa Claus by Sonny Boy Williamson

2011-12-04T18:33:00.000-08:00

Have a merry, Merry Christmas!!!

Santa Claus by Sonny Boy Williamson

My baby went shoppin' yesterday
said "I'm gonna buy what you need for Santa Claus"
My baby went shoppin' yesterday
said "I'm gonna buy what you need for Santa Claus
I'm gonna take mine with me
but I'll leave yours in my dresser drawer"

So that started me to
ramblin'
lookin' in all of my baby's dresser drawers
Whoa that started me to ramblin'
lookin' all in my baby's dresser drawers
Tryin' to find out
what did she bought me for Santa Claus

When I pulled out the bottom dresser drawer
the landlady got mad and called the law
When I pulled out the bottom dresser drawer
the landlady got mad and called the law
I was just tryin' to find
what did she bought me for Santa Claus

The police walked in and tapped me on the shoulder
What you doing with your hand in that woman's dresser drawer?
I hand the police a letter my baby wrote me
showin' where I should find my Santa Claus
I just kept on pullin' out all of my baby's dresser drawers

I walked out and left the police and the landlady arguin'
said Look at the man done pull out all the lady's dresser drawers
Yes I walked out and left the police and the landlady arguin'
said Look at the man done pull out all the lady's dresser drawers
But he said I got the letter and show the judge
The boy just tryin to find his Santa Claus
Oh yeah

Farewell Hubert Sumlin (1931-2011)

2011-12-04T17:33:00.000-08:00

One of the best Blues guitarists of all time, Hubert Sumlin has passed away due to heart failure. Sumlin gained blues fame as a guitarist for the legendary Howlin' Wolf from around 1954 to 1976. His guitar part on 'Killing Floor' by Howlin' Wolf was perhaps Sumlin's greatest contribution to music.

From Wikipedia

Hubert Sumlin (November 16, 1931 – December 4, 2011) was an American Chicago blues and electric blues guitarist and singer. He was best known for his celebrated work, from 1955, as guitarist in Howlin' Wolf's band. His singular playing was characterized by "wrenched, shattering bursts of notes, sudden cliff-hanger silences and daring rhythmic suspensions". Sumlin was listed as number 43 in the Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

Farewell Hubert Sumlin, you will never be forgotten.

2011-09-11T20:54:00.000-07:00

Here's a splendid performance from the newest Blues band in town, this time doing their own version of the late great Jimi's Red House. Note the excellent harp work + cool guitar riffs = 2 thumbs up!

And to think that Ian has been doing harp for just about a year!

Borrowing a line from the Beatles, "(They're) getting better all the time..."

Blues Clinic Highlights by Tek Cortez a.k.a. haringulan

2011-03-25T07:22:00.000-07:00

Blues music is one of the most important creations of man. As written in an earlier post, "Blues is not just a genre - it's a microcosm of life itself. There's sorrow, happiness, hope, loneliness, religion, hunger, satiety, sin, redemption, and love - all embedded in the songs and expressed through voice and instruments."

Blues may now be considered an international phenomenon - it has crossed borders, no longer an exclusive American property. But here in the Philippines, it still is not a popular music form, much to the dismay of Pinoy Blues die-hard fans.

Luckily, Blues has lately been experiencing a revival. With the tireless efforts of Blues stalwarts who conduct seminars, clinics, and provide "Blues exposure" through concerts and performances, plus video blogs like this one by haringulan, slowly but surely, the Blues is getting the attention it deserves.

Farewell Pinetop Perkins (1913-2011)

2011-03-24T05:12:00.000-07:00

We bid goodbye to another Blues legend and boogie-woogie master, Joe Willie "Pinetop" Perkins.

In a career spanning eight decades, Perkins toured with Ike Turner in the 1950s and later with Muddy Waters. Perkins also won Grammy awards for Lifetime Achievement in 2005 and for Best Traditional Blues Album in 2007.

Once asked about his longevity, Perkins said: "I always try to do something different all the time."
Another blues legend, BB King, said: "He was one of the last great Mississippi Bluesmen, and he sure could play the piano.

He will be missed not only by me, but by lovers of music all over the world." His agent said that his tastes were simple. "Two cheeseburgers, apple pie, a cigarette and a pretty girl was all he wanted."

Here's the great Wally Gonzalez jamming with Cebu's pride, Cuarenta (Arnold, Lyndon, Juel) and with the dude who does the vocals and great Blues harp riffs.
