Farewell Hubert Sumlin (1931-2011)

One of the best Blues guitarists of all time, Hubert Sumlin has passed away due to heart failure. Sumlin gained blues fame as a guitarist for the legendary Howlin' Wolf from around 1954 to 1976. His guitar part on 'Killing Floor' by Howlin' Wolf was perhaps Sumlin's greatest contribution to music.

Hubert Sumlin (November 16, 1931 – December 4, 2011) was an American Chicago blues and electric blues guitarist and singer. He was best known for his celebrated work, from 1955, as guitarist in Howlin' Wolf's band. His singular playing was characterized by "wrenched, shattering bursts of notes, sudden cliff-hanger silences and daring rhythmic suspensions". Sumlin was listed as number 43 in the Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

CCP Holds 1st International Jazz Festival

The Cultural Center of the Philippines will be a-thumping with the sound and beat of jazz music when it holds The Story of Jazz: 1St CCP International Jazz Festival 2011 on August 23-28, 2011.

More than 150 jazz musicians from different jazz groups will converge at the CCP to jive and jam in various venues of the CCP that will be transformed into one big jazz club with intimate music lounges. Jazz players and singers from the Philippines and abroad will tell the story of jazz through talk and music. Lectures on and performances of jazz in all its variety of styles---bebop, Blues, ragtime, modal, experimental, big band and fusion will be held.

Leading the roster of performers is the world renowned royal hartigan and blood drum spirit from the USA. Percussionist and pianist royal hartigan and his blood drum spirit ensemble have performed all over the world, exploring the great music traditions of the world through live jazz performances. The group has been described by music reviewers as “the confluence of different musical traditions, combining non-Western rhythms with a standard jazz quartet to create a series of impressive originals”

Other performers include the Korean Soul and Beat Project Group from Korea, Stelzhamma from Austria, Shun Kikuta from Japan, Neris Gonzalez from Spain, Charito, Michael Bourne and the Bleu Rascals, Lowcal, Blue Rats, Faith Gospel Singers, the UP Jazz Ensemble, UST Jazz Ensemble, Cooky Chua and her band, Majam and Emi Munji and the AMP Band.

Blues music is one of the most important creations of man. As written in an earlier post, "Blues is not just a genre - it's a microcosm of life itself. There's sorrow, happiness, hope, loneliness, religion, hunger, satiety, sin, redemption, and love - all embedded in the songs and expressed through voice and instruments."

Blues may now be considered an international phenomenon - it has crossed borders, no longer an exclusive American property. But here in the Philippines, it still is not a popular music form, much to the dismay of Pinoy Blues die-hard fans.

Luckily, Blues has lately been experiencing a revival. With the tireless efforts of Blues stalwarts who conduct seminars, clinics, and provide "Blues exposure" through concerts and performances, plus video blogs like this one by haringulan, slowly but surely, the Blues is getting the attention it deserves.

Farewell Pinetop Perkins (1913-2011)

We bid goodbye to another Blues legend and boogie-woogie master, Joe Willie "Pinetop" Perkins.

In a career spanning eight decades, Perkins toured with Ike Turner in the 1950s and later with Muddy Waters. Perkins also won Grammy awards for Lifetime Achievement in 2005 and for Best Traditional Blues Album in 2007.

Once asked about his longevity, Perkins said: "I always try to do something different all the time."
Another blues legend, BB King, said: "He was one of the last great Mississippi Bluesmen, and he sure could play the piano.

He will be missed not only by me, but by lovers of music all over the world." His agent said that his tastes were simple. "Two cheeseburgers, apple pie, a cigarette and a pretty girl was all he wanted."

November 2, 2010: A Tragic Day for Pinoy Blues (plus some notes on NU107 Cebu)

"The Crossroads with Capt. Eddie @ NU 107.5 is sad because, unfortunately, the curtains will fall on The Crossroads after 14 years and 6 months (752 shows) of the best blues and classic rock at NU107..." (see more)

...and it had to happen on an "All Soul's Day!"

This is a big (low) blow for the Philippine Blues scene, more so since there currently is a significant resurgence of interest on this particular genre, and it's a fact that "The Crossroads" is a major contributing factor to this.

I do hope that NU107 reconsiders their decision to discontinue the program. The Blues may be unpopular here in our country (and not a big money-maker as well) but, hey, it's THE BLUES! It's where every other major music genre came from. As the great Willie Dixon has said, "The Blues is the roots, everything else is the fruits." No Blues = No rock = No NU107. OK, I guess "The Crossroads" doesn't make much dough for the company, and of course we DON'T have a say on their decision-making, but do they really have to shut the program down? Can't they just shorten it instead?

On the other hand, if nothing else can be done, I guess it's time to pass the Blues torch to the young guns of today. A difficult task ahead, but as Napoleon Hill once said, “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.” Adversity is part of life. Adversity gives us opportunities to connect with others and use our strengths to rise to the occasion and overcome it.

To Capt. Eddie, you have done your part and you have done it well, and for this, we will forever be grateful.

March onward, Blues brothers!!!

Note: I just found out that the entire NU107 Manila has followed suit - pulling everything off the air, had its last broadcast day on November 7, 2010 (another sad, sad day for Pinoy Blues/Rock).
Luckily, we still have NU107 Cebu on air - clearly a case where one's loss is someone else's gain. Since no other rock station (that I know of) exists in our country, NU107 Cebu is posed to become the sole authority on Pinoy Rock. I just hope that this would translate to a satisfactory financial gain for the station so that we'll be assured that Pinoy Rock will remain on air forever!

A soldier stationed in the South Pacific wrote to his wife in the States to please send him a harmonica to occupy his free time and keep his mind off the local women.

The wife complied and sent the best one she could find, along with several dozen lesson & music books.

Rotated back home, he rushed to their home and through the front door. "Oh darling," he gushed, "Come here! Let me look at you. Let me hold you! Let’s have a fine dinner out, then make love all night. I’ve missed your lovin’ soooo much!"
