There is no need to plan some extravagant activities or food. In fact, let the kids do most of the planning. By giving each child their own task, they will learn to take on some responsibility. They will enjoy the day much more than simply being taken on a picnic. Make each task age appropriate. For instance, kids younger than 5 years old may be best equipped to pack the drinks in a cool pack or help collect up some outdoor sports equipment (plastic bucket and shove, soccer ball, etc). The older kids can help with creating the menu. This can virtually stop the complaints about some food they don't like. You may want to offer some suggestions for the menu. Give them an outline with the four food groups and let them figure out the selections that fit each group.

Games can help run off some energy and convey a sense of freedom for the older kids. The activities can be simple as playing catch (football or baseball), throwing a frisbee or playing fetch with the family dog. A kite is always a favorite and is really appreciated when it takes off into the sky. You can also plan a more structured time for games such as the three legged race or the egg and spoon race. Another easy game is the wheelbarrow race.

Most city parks now have a play scape area. This can be a huge hit with the younger kids. Make sure you do a little climbing and sliding yourself. You will bond like crazy by being part of their world for awhile.

You may want to bring a change of clothes for everyone. That way if someone gets wet or finds that special mud puddle, it will not ruin the day. Sunscreen and insect repellent are always a good idea. Remember the camera, as you will want to remember these time and share the memories with the kids and grandkids later on.

1. Bible Treasure Hunt

In this religious party game you will need to prepare several bible verses beforehand. Use your computer to type up the bible verses and make sure you include the book and verse where it can be found in the bible, for every verse leave out one word. Use the missing word as hints to where you will hide the next clue. For example, let's say the missing word from the verse is fish. The group will look up the verse in the bible and fill in the missing blank with the word fish. They then know that the word fish is the hint that will lead them to their next clue, which they will find if they look under the fish tank. The clue there will lead them to another and another until they finally reach the end.

2. Verse Hunt

This is another fun religious party game you can play to practice important verses of the bible. Choose one verse, the longer the verse the more of a challenge. Write each word of the verse on an individual index card. If you are going to play in teams then you will need to make a separate set for each team using a different colored set of index cards. Hide all the index cards throughout the playing area. Each team must find all the index cards in their teams color and be the first to put them together in the correct order.

3. The Real McCoy

This is a funny game to play that involves pretending to be one of the figures from the bible. The more you know about them, the better you will be.

To Play: One player should be chosen to be the "Detective." The rest of the group will present the detective with a dilemma. The dilemma is that they are all claiming to be the same figure from the bible, and only one of them can be the real McCoy. The detective's job is to ask questions to each individual about the person they think they are and discover who the real McCoy is.

For example, the group will decide that they all believe themselves to be Moses. The detective must ask each "Moses" one question at a time in order to figure out if they are the real Moses. They don't have to be yes or no questions. If a person answers incorrectly, or if the question was one that the person didn't know about Moses -- another player (who knows the answer) yells "Fraud, I'm the real Moses!" The player who made the incorrect statement is out for the rest of that round, and the player who called him a fraud must answer the question correctly.

Twice in each round the detective is allowed to use a fraud check. This is when the detective can ask the group to raise their hand if they believe another person has just answered a question as the true Moses would have (correctly). The detective may choose to do this when he/she knows a person has answered a question wrong, but nobody else calls out "fraud". She/he can also use this tactic if the question was answered truthfully but they want to see if others will agree. Anyone who answers a detectives "fraud check" wrong is out for the rest of the round. The game continues until only one person is left. They are deemed the real McCoy and may be the next detective. Play another round with a new biblical figure to keep the fun going.

How to Spice Summer Food Favorites For Picnics and Barbeques

Planning a party for a lot of people can seem overwhelming, which is why the potluck idea was invented. The downside can be lack of flavor when everyone brings items bought at the local store. What if you want baked beans, but it needs to be heated when it arrives? What if cousin Bob forgets what he was supposed to bring and it's a crucial item, like paper plates or utensils?

One way to handle this is to figure the cost and have a donation jar on the table for each guest to make a contribution. Prepare them ahead of time by adding up your costs for everything and divide by the number of people attending, including yourself. Tell them the suggested donation. Trust me, your guests would love to avoid making the decision of what to buy and taking the time to pick it up. That way you can avoid duplications or no-shows and have a little better grasp on the timing for serving your meal.

Certain foods are expected at picnics and outdoor gatherings. In the meat category are the burgers and hotdogs. Buy burgers in patties that are ready to go, but spice them up with a meat rub beforehand. Or if you are a do-it-yourself cook, combine some smoky flavors that include chili pepper, paprika and Liquid Smoke. Be careful with the hot flavors, which not everyone can tolerate, especially kids, and keep a jar of jalapeños as a ready condiment.

Although children love hotdogs, the nitrates and nitrites are not good for them. So unless you are willing to do some serious research on the best brands with natural casings, try to get by with just the burgers (preferably post-pink slime ones). Or include a macaroni and cheese side dish just for the children.

Beans are another staple for picnics and family gatherings. Although you could buy canned beans already flavored, consider the less expensive generic beans with no sugar and little or no fat and salt content. Then flavor them the way you want. You might consider baking dry beans yourself, as they are less expensive and quick to cook up in a pressure cooker. You just have to remember to soak them the day before.

The best spices for flavoring beans are mustard, cumin and the same smoky flavors you used on the burgers. A touch of molasses and some Chalula are also crowd pleasers. The beauty of beans is that they are filling, have a lot of protein and are great if any of your guests are vegetarians.

A salad at most picnics is an expected item. If you have a garden, the salad can be at your fingertips. Coleslaw is easy, filling and relatively inexpensive. You can buy pre-shredded cabbage and add color by including red radishes, diced yellow or orange bell peppers or even fresh sweet peas or carrots. Take it easy on the mayo, the veggies themselves provide plenty of flavor. For a creamier texture, use half mayo and half sour cream (or cottage cheese). Thin with a little vegetable oil and give it a little tang with 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar or lemon juice. Add more flavor with caraway, dill, mustard, celery or poppy seeds or chop up a scallion or two. Many dressing recipes call for sugar, but it is not necessary with the sweet veggies. You can substitute fresh leaf lettuce or macaroni noodles for the cabbage.

We all have a tendency to overeat at these types of gatherings. So try to keep it simple. Meat, beans and salad are plenty. If you have those die-hard meat and potato folks, consider a potato salad. Make it with mustard instead of mayo as a change of pace. Other fillers might include chips (blue corn are healthier than potato). If you're really ambitious consider frying up some sweet potato chips. You can never make too many of those. Brownies or pie are hard to argue with for dessert and can be store bought. Just read the labels carefully to avoid too much of a bad thing.

To prepare minutes: 15
Culinary minutes: 720
Number of servings: 8

Components

6 cups fresh cauliflower florets
1c. Fat free mayonnaise
1c. 2% milk cheddar or Mexican cheese, shredded
Zesty Italian salad dressing 1 envelope weather (dry mix)

Guidelines

Place cauliflower florets in a large bowl. Cauliflower and bluecheese, sprinkle a teaspoon of mayonnaise and dry Italian dressingand sprinkle over Mayo. Cover tightly and allowed to walk inrefrigerator 12-24 hours. Mix all ingredients together before serving.Fresh Greens on a side dish or as a light lunch is served. Makes 8servings.

Then there's the ever reliable Dewalt DW745 for sheer versatility. There are many other fine saws but the Bosch 4100DG-09 and the Dewalt DW744X remain in my opinion and the opinions of many of my colleagues, the best of their kind.

Picnics are so much fun and you have so many easy picnic recipes out there you can choose from to make your picnic delicious. There is no need to spend all day preparing a huge meal for such a simple day out. You need to forget all that cooking and make something simple but very satisfying. Here are two different recipes you may want to try for your upcoming picnic.

Try the BLT wrap. Here are the ingredients you are going to need to get started making this yummy wrap.

4 flour tortillas- 12 inch
1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
½ head shredded iceberg lettuce
1 diced tomato
1 pound of bacon

This is one of the easy picnic recipes that doesn't contain much cooking. You are going to want to cook your bacon in a deep pan and cook over medium-high heat until done to your liking. Drain the grease and put aside while you prepare the wrap. Place your tortillas on a microwave safe plate and one by one heat 1/4 cup of shredded cheese until melted on them. Usually one to two minutes. Immediately, top with your lettuce and tomato evenly and add your bacon. Fold over the sides of the tortilla and then roll up. Cut in half and you are all set.

This next recipe is for the vegetable lovers out there looking for easy picnic recipes. This recipe is called the crunchy veggie wrap and it's simple and healthy. Here are the ingredients you are going to need.

1/4 cup cream cheese fat-free
4 flour tortillas- 10 or 12 inch
1 cup of alfalfa sprouts (which are so delicious)
1 cup of shredded red cabbage
1/4 cup crumbled blue cheese
½ cup of chopped tomato
4 curly leaf lettuce
2 tablespoons of finely diced red onion

Spread one tablespoon of cream cheese on top of each tortilla evenly; top each one with a piece of lettuce. Divide your alfalfa sprouts and the remaining ingredients among tortillas to your liking. Roll them and then cut diagonally.

These two easy picnic recipes are just a couple of the many you can choose from. You have no limits to what you can bring on your picnic. Whichever you choose they are going to have you full and very much satisfied without the guilt of eating too much. So plan and prepare the meal of your choice.
