Ground Zero Monument is located on Legian street, was establishedand inaugurated on October 12, 2004 exactly two years to the day tocommemorate victims of the Bali bombings a tragedy that occurredOctober 12, 2002. The explosion which occurred at two sites, the Sari Club and Paddy's Cafe itself is estimated to take 202 people dead. It is easy to reach the monument at Ground Zero, because this monument is on the road to the beach Legian Kuta, center of all tourist activities in Bali are filled with hotels, restaurants,bars, shops, etc..

Many tourists visit during the day or night to just look around and take pictures. In terms of its architecture, monumentsGround Zero has a unique shape that is typical Balinese carvings or the so-called "Kayonan", shaped sort of large white-painted leaves thatsymbolize the universe and under it we can read the list of names of victims who come from various countries, not unless the victim comesfrom our own country, Indonesia.

Every year, each dated October 12, will usually be heldcommemorations for the victims of such bombs pray together, lightingcandles and lay a wreath at Ground Zero Monument area. Althoughlong gone, it's cruelty that occurred from the bomb blast are still made an impression not only for the people of Bali but also citizens of the world, as well as liver perihnya left by colleagues and dear brothers who are victims of a bomb.

If we come to the memorial at Ground Zero, stilleasily found, either peers or families of victims who put pictures of thevictims of the Bali Bombing 1 around the Ground Zero monument areaeven till now, 8 years passed after the Bali bombings first occurred.

Alas Kedaton

Alas Kedaton is a small forest with a width of about 6-7ha located in the middle of rice fields. Alas Kedaton located in Tabanan regency. Total size Alas Kedaton include temples, forests and supporting facilities is about 12 ha. In this forest, there is a temple called Alas Kedaton Temple with a green natural environment and fresh air that create an atmosphere of calm and holy enough.

The monkeys in Alas Kedaton roam freely in the courtyard of the temple, so the atmosphere calm sometimes broken by a voice vote monkeys, who play around, stirring the food. Monkey in the base kedaton pretty tame. The monkeys that live in this jungle jump up and down the walls of the temple, bathe in the trench or hang out in some trees. Monkeys act as guardians of the temple, always ready to welcome all visitors who visited this place. In addition to monkeys, bats and some other animals in the forest kedaton. can be seen by the tourists. At least 24 types of grove plant have been identified in Alas Kedaton.

Alas Kedaton Steady located in the village, Marga district, Tabanan regency. Travel to this place is easy to use motor vehicle via the main road from Denpasar to Tabanan. On the way to go to Kedaton Alas, we will see good scenery of paddy field and irrigation voice at the side of the road creating a peaceful atmosphere.

Alas Kedaton Temple has three fields, outer, middle and center field. middle and center field is an open field surrounded by stone walls. The interesting thing about this temple is the height of the central field lower than middle field. It’s different than the general temples in Bali which is center field is often higher than middle field. In addition, another unique thing of this temple is It’s four entrances.

The Bali Arts Festival is a full month of daily performances, handicraft exhibitions and other related cultural and commercial activities during which literally the whole of Bali comes to the city to present its offerings of dance, music and beauty. On display are trances from remote mountain slopes, forgotten or recently revived village dances, food and offering contests, classical palace dances, stars of Balinese stage, odd musical performances, "kreasi baru" (new creations) from the dance schools of Denpasar, as well as contemporary choreography and dance companies from other islands and from abroad.

It is a month long revelry that perhaps no other place in the world can put up on such a low budget as the Balinese. Not only is their traditional culture alive and well, but they have a tremendous pride in it.

It begins in the villages, where the seka or cultural groups are selected and organized at the regency level, vie with each other to perform the Arts Festival and thus display in front of a large audience the uniqueness of their village of birth and resting place of their ancestors.

The Bali Arts Festival is the Denpasar cultural event of the year, perhaps it would no be too far fetched to suggest that it is the cultural event of Indonesia. The festival is thus a unique opportunity to see local village culture both "live" and at first hand. Tourists are warmly welcomed.

The History of the Bali Arts Festival

When tourism took off after 1965, the Balinese insisted that it followed cultural guidelines: if tourism was to be accepted, it was to be a cultural tourism, or "pariwisata budaya".

As the Balinese put it: "Tourism should be for Bali instead of Bali for tourism." In time, this idea become national policy, as part of a larger revping of regional cultures for national purposes. The policy owes much to the former Director General of Culture (1968-1978) and Governor of Bali (1978-1988), Ida Bagus Mantra, an Indian-educed Balinese. It led, on the one side, to the creation of enclave resorts such as Nusa Dua to limit the direct impact of tourism, and on the other, to a long haul cultural policy aimed at nurturing and preserving the traditional agrarian culture while adapting it to the demands of modernity, and in particular of "cultural tourism".

At the village level, local music groups, dances and other cultural events were inventoried, then supported by a series of contests at the district and regency level. The ensuing competition energized the cultural life of villages, whose "young blood" was already being drained to the city by the process of economic change and urbanization.

Schools of dance and art were created, in particular the Kokar conservatory and the STSI School of Dance and Music. Beside research, these schools replaced the traditional master/disciple relationship by modern methods of teaching; standardized the dance movements, produced new types of Balinese dances for tourism and modern village entertainment. Most important, it enabled former students to return to the villages as teachers, where they diffused, beside the creed of cultural resilience and renewal, new dances and standardized versions of old ones.

Many of the performances are held at the amphitheater which can hold up to 6,000 spectators, in a temple-like stage.

Each year, the Bali Arts Festival, beside the fed classical dances of the island, such as the legong, gambuh, kecak, barong, baris, mask dances and the like, is based on the theme around which new "dance choreography" is produced and old village dances and activities revived. Over the years, the whole range of classical Balinese stories - Ramayana, Mahabharata, Sutasoma, Panji - have thus been turned into "colossal" Sendratari Ballets.

The main challenge to the Arts Festival is obviously economic in nature. As village life is increasingly feeling the strains of monetary considerations, dancers, musicians and others cannot be expected to continue participating simply for the sake and the pleasure of it. As costs soar, new sources of financing have to be found. The obvious answer is the private sector and in particular the tourism industry. The greater task then is to convince the hotels, travel agencies and tourist guides to be more participatory in the Arts Festival rather than to their own sponsored events.

Considering the pride the Balinese have in their culture, and the adaptability and dynism they have always demonstrated, this little hurdle can be overcome. Trust the Balinese. They will eventually succeed to transform their tradition into a modern, Balinese culture of their own.

Taman Ujung Water Palace

Ujung Water Palace, which by the local people is called as Taman Soekasada Ujung, was built in 1919. However, the launching of this complex of water palace was performed in 1912. The water palace was constructed by the late King of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik, that reigned in Karangasem between 1909 and 1945.

Ujung Water Palace was majestically built to welcome and to serve important guests and Kings from neighboring countries, besides for the pleasure of the King and his royal family.

Taman Soekasada Ujung lies at Tumbu village, Karangasem district. It is approximately 85 km from Airport Denpasar and 5 km from Amlapura.

Tourism activity in this area is supported by the available of food stalls, small restaurants and quite large parking area. Visitors who are interested in local crafts product can find some of them in art shops available here.

Taman Soekasada Ujung has been announced to be a cultural tourist object for it is noted as one of several cultural heritages exist in Karangasem regency.

The complex of this water palace is the combination of Balinese and European architectures. There are 3 big and large ponds inside the area. In the middle of the main pond, there is a building that connected to the edge of the pond by 2 bridges.

On the most tip of the highest level of this complex, we will find a great statue of “warak” (rhinoceros). Beneath the warak there is a Bull statue. From this high place we will see a marvellous view of sea, hills with lush and green forest, the beauty of Mount Agung combined with the green terraced rice fields.

The greatness of Ujung Water Palace had been destructed by the explotion of Mount Agung in 1963 which was made worst by the great shake happened in 1979. However, the recovery effort had been performed to bring back the glory of this complex of water palace by holding a reconstruction and revitalisation project on it. Although it is not as great as it was, the amaze of the past still can be seen here this moment.

Kamasan Village

Kamasan Traditional Village located about five kilometers south of Semarapura, Klungkung regency, about 50 kilometers from Denpasar. Pass land road, Kamasan can reach during one hour. With large of area around 187,5 hectare and population about 2.995 people, It's different than other village around it, because most of other village has 2 or 4 time more people than kamasan. As comparison, Gelgel which has the same wide like Kamasan has population around 4.392 people.

Kamasan Village already exist since Gelgel Dynasti in Bali. At the beginning, Kamasan people works as farmers, but since eruption on Mount Agung, most of them change their profession became Wayang painter or gold and silver smiths.

This village is a place for the famous Kamasan Painting. Kamasan style is using color from natural pigments, such as black is from Charcoal and other may from fruits or leaves. You can find the sample of this painting style in Kertagosa or Bale Kambang in Klungkung regency righ on the center of the town.

Klungkung is only 45 minutes drive from Denpasar,public transportation are available to this area usually from Batubulan terminal.

Bali Art Center known as Taman Budaya Ardha Chandra located at Kesiman sub-district, municipality of Denpasar. More precisely is at the southern end of the Nusa Indah street of East Denpasar city. Three accesses can be taken to reach the area; one is from Sanur taking Jalan Hang Tuah from where bigger cars can enter, or from the crossroad of Jalan Gianyar and Gatot Subroto which is preferable to go with traffic flows already in line as in Indonesia including Bali the line is on the left. Third access is from west Denpasar city which are available many roads, but all are difficult due to the dense traffic, only smaller cars such as taxi or minivan are suggested to access art center from the west.

Geographically today Ardha Chandra looks lay in the center of Denpasar city, due to the extension of the east Denpasar further east, up to the border with Gianyar Regency, a distance of more than 5 km east and with the opening of beach road to the east Bali the extension of the city is even further east along the road. Before 2000 the Kecak dance was presented at one of the corner of Ardha Chandra, and due to the difficulty for bigger bus then organizer of the dance moved the stage to the new place just on the right side of main road from Sanur to Kesiman.

Taman Budaya architecturally is a complex of buildings with the main mark of a big open stage. Designed by a traditional Balinese architect Ida Bagus Pugur, opened for public in 1973. Besides the traditional open stage there are many buildings and hall constructed in Balinese architecture with finest decoration. These buildings are consisting of two types, one type is for permanent exhibition and others are for seasonal exhibition, especially during Bali Art Festival of June every year. Two buildings with the finest Bali architecture are for permanent exhibition where one can see various art of Bali from dance facilities or figures, carvings, clothing arts, paintings, and others.

In the North is located the Gedung Kriya Uccaihsrawa building where the fine arts exhibition are held. Balinese and foreign artists exhibit there. To The West of Gedung Kriya lies the two story Dewi Ratih Building, which is used during the Bali Art Festival for an architectural exhibition on the first floor and a photography exhibition on the second floor.

But the largest structure (7200 m2) by far is the giant crescent shaped Ardha Candra Amphitheater. A magnificent Candi Kurung's gates, through which the dancers enter the stage, make up the background of the performances. The atmosphere is particularly impressive during the full moon or under the light of the projectors. This theatre, completed in 1977, can hold up to 600 people. Underneath the stage, facing North, West and ticketing offices and handicraft exhibition rooms for the various regencies of the island.

To the west of Ardha Candra Amphitheater is the Ksirarnawa closed theatre, which occupies a 5850 square meter surface on two floors. The theatre can contain up to 800 people, which is located on the second floor. The first one is occupied by the offices of the Art Center, a cafeteria, and several is also used for various handicraft exhibitions, the turnover of which is increasing from year to year, and they play a large role in the increase in non oil exports. Visiting hours are 8 a.m. to 5 pm, Tuesday to Sunday.

During Bali Art Festival the whole buildings are filed with exhibition of all type of products, not only art products but also history, books, daily needs, creative products, governments departments with their duties and others. A real bustling situation during one month of the feast. The activities at the open stage even more lively, as scheduled life shows present their representatives from traditional dance or drama or pantomime from Bali, other Indonesian provinces and foreign participants. Loyal foreign participants so far such as India, Thailand, USA, France, Australia, Japan, and Korea. New country such as Vietnam and Cambodia have also actively participating.

The most interesting moment is during the opening of the art festival, which is always started from Puputan City square with procession of dances, music, decorations, marshal art and others, finishing at Renon city square where invited high officials and foreign officials are waiting in a temporary set up Bali traditional pavilions with thatched roof. Along the way the procession which consist of various artists show their actions or dance catch up by many TV stations or journalists. The procession usually started at 9 pm and finishes 12 noon marking the start of a month long art festival. The livelihood of the situation can be seen both at the exhibition and at the open stage starting from the night of the opening ceremony with the procession.

Every evening or night has been scheduled the turn of each representative to present their show which is normally has been confirmed long before the event. During the day the open stage also not always rest, but sometimes the school or universities will fill with many activities such as life drum band, drama or any other art activities they can present. Beside normal show there are also kinds of competition among the same traditional music of Bali such as Gong, and the winner will be given the appreciation. It is a pity that Dinas Kebudayan Provinsi Bali is still not yet develops despite the fact of the modern technology that already freely available in Bali with cheap price.

This situation making the information about Bali Art Festival is not yet widely known by the people. Although the people know that the art festival is organized regularly every year during June, but detailed information on the activity schedule is hard to find. It is probably lack of professional manager or staff that has made this big job never known by most of the visitors to Bali and even by tour organizers.

Rambut Siwi Temple

Rambut Siwi Temple is located 18 km to the east of the City State and 78 km toward the west from the city of Denpasar. Can be achieved with all types of vehicles and parking large enough. Here there are temples built Sad Goda and closely related to the arrival of a minister of Majapahit who travel to religious to Bali and stop at these places to give teachings on Hinduism.

Because of respect for local residents to the preacher who was named Dang Hyang Nirartha, asked to adore his hair and kept in this temple so that the name of this temple called Pura Rambut (hair) Siwi. From this temple we can also enjoy a sea view and sunset.

Rambut Siwi as object of the tourism represents the wide atmosphere, and supposed temple of Rambut Siwi. Surrounded by the field of the rice of unfolding and the terrace, and in side of the south is escarped Reef and hillock bank. Of this hillock bank we can see the ocean that it is always adorned sprinkling the wave. In the Rambut Siwi temple of westside environmental there is a corridor to take a rest and to enjoy the beauty of the panorama of the sea that very enjoying. Not far from the mentioned corridor, in lateral temple of the south there is steep terrace descends walk to pray for. In coastal periphery of the hillock bank there are two caves assumed like saints and sagradas.

The atmosphere in this place is calm and good for the restoration of the mind. Trunyan village is located on the bank of lake Batur just on the foot of the mount Abang . Their unique tradition from the rest of Balinese is their tradition of not burrying their dead member. They have 3 cemetries. One is for the normal dead, second is for abnormal death such as fall from the wood during harvest of greenery for the cattles, or certain sickness which is considered very dangerous, and cemetry for the children.

For the normal dead person the corp is not burried like the rest of Balinese, but just put on the narrow spot of land on the foot of hill and just exposed to the atmosphere until the whole flesh disolve from the body and left only the bones. There is really strange because the expored dead body in Trunyan normal cemetry is not radiationg bad smell. Many people say that it is just because of the water absorb the bed smell or probably the tree that is known to name Maja tree can absorb the bed smell.

As a matter of fact Trunyan village has been recorded on king charter in the 10th century. A temple dedicated to the God of Bhatara Datonta is clearly mentioned 1000 years ago to be maintained and worshiped.

Jatiluwih is one of tourist places and destination in Bali, it is popular with beautiful rice terrace. Jatiluwih is approximately 20 km from Tabanan, the road climbs up high into the hills to a small village named Jatiluwih at a height of 850 meters above sea level. The view here is one of the finest imaginable: Bali's terrace paddy fields stretch in endless contours over hills and valleys as far as the eye can see. Perched on slopes of Mount Batukaru, Jati Luwih is a mountain village and famed for its magnificent landscapes. The whole landscape of the southern Bali can be seen from this area. Its name means 'truly marvelous' and the view truly is as it encompasses a huge region of Southern Bali.

Jatiluwih rice terrace is a beautiful tropical rice growing area located in Tabanan which is located not far north of the Kuta district on in the southwest of Bali, the road climbs up high into the hills to a small village named Jatiluwih at a height of 850 meters above sea level.

Ngaben is a purification ceremony atma (spirit) as the first phase of the Hindu Balinese sacred obligation to their ancestors by burning the corpse procession. The human body consists of rough body, subtle body and the karma. Rough human body is formed from 5 distinguished elements called Panca Maha Bhuta ie earth (solid), Apah (liquid), Teja (hot substance) bayu (wind) and akasa (space). The fifth element is fused to form human physical and mobilized by the atma (spirit). When people die who die are just rough body, not his atma. Well Ngaben is the process of sanctification atma / soul as it leaves the body rough. There are several opinions about the origin of the word Ngaben. Some say Ngaben of the word which means stock Beya, there are also who said the word ngabu (ashes), etc.

In Hinduism it is believed that Brahma the creator god as well as also is the god of fire. Nusa Penida is a largest island of 3 islands (the others being Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan), located in the southeast of Bali, has dive sites for the novice to the more experienced diver. Water temperature in Nusa Penida is quite cold but often startlingly clear, with gorgeous corals and prolific fish, with some turtle, shark (including grey reefs and silver-tips and Mola-Mola).

Nusa Penida is arrounded by coral reef that runs the length of Nusa Penida's north coast. The reef has a lot of soft corals, and also many kinds of fish, such as Moorish Idols, Sweetlips, Lionfish, Moray Eel, Scorpionfish, white tip reef shark, Napoleonfish and Sunfishes. Nusa Penida’s sunfish can get over 100 years old. If you are very lucky you might even see the Molas while eating jellyfish. They hover nearly motionless in the water and suck one jellyfish after the other into their small mouth.

Wonderful barrel sponges and gorgonians can be seen in the deeper waters, and sea snakes can be seen on almost every dive. With the reef extending up to within five metres of the surface your safety stop will allow time to spot moray eels, titan triggerfish and the brilliantly coloured emporer angelfish. Be careful not to touch the reef as the local scorpionfish are notoriously difficult to spot.

Toyapakeh

Toyapakeh is located in nort-west Nusa Penida. This is most popular dive site. Actually the site breaks into two with Toyapakeh wall and Toyapakeh. Both these sites are encrusted with corals and fish. The intensity of the fish life is something to be witnessed. Large pelagics are often seen here just lurking in the blue.

Toyapakeh is lovely reef of beautiful soft corals and thriving hard corals, gives us clouds of reef-fish including anthias, Scorpionfish, Moray Eel, trumpetfish, puffers, Giant Trevally. This popularity is deserved and not only because it is partially protected from the current flowing through the strait between Penida and Ceningan, but also due to the good visibility and rich coral. In addition to the coral reef, there are some very attractive coral formations, with big gorgonians, that provide excellent places to find fish and other marine life.

The current here often heads north-east, which makes for an easy and pleasant drift-dive however the current in shallow water and the current in deeper water are sometimes going in different directions, therefore the direction of your dive can change as you alter your depth. The water can be pretty cold which means thermoclines.

Gamat Bay

Gamat Bay just closed from Toyapakeh dive point, between Toyapakeh and Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay is one of the few dive sites at Nusa Penida where you don't have to just 'go with the flow', the bay is protected from the currents although once you head down the steep slope at the mouth, you are again drift-diving.

Gamat Bay is a profusion of colourful soft corals, with gorgonians and hard corals everywhere. These shallow areas are lovely, full of reef-fish - some quite rare, commensals, nudibranches, and could take your whole dive, particularly if you are a photographer. The larger fishlife here is fairly diverse with some large specimens of surgeonfish, grouper and unicornfish. Overhangs and a couple of small caves provide resting places for white tips and turtles.

Cristal Bay

Crystal Bay have the most fantastic visibility under water. This site consists of a fantastic little bay in shallow water that offers excellent opportunities for photos. Crystal bay have many kind of coral reef. This hard coral reef has a white sand base, and is covered with anemones and soft corals. It can be quite surgey in the bay. The marinelife includes Angelfish, Sweetlips, many Moorish Idols. The Hard Coral also provide homes for a lot of lobster.

Following the north side of the bay around, we come to a Bat Cave: enter from underwater, surface inside the cave (which is open to the sky) where bats sleep overhead - big waves may crash in through the top. Sometimes 2 small reef shark are in the cave, but they leave when you arrive or if you lucky you can find leopard shark.

Manta Point

Manta point is most popular dive site in Nusa Penida besides Crystal Bay, Gamat bay and Toyapakeh. Manta sightings here are very common with some very large animals being seen. This site is very open to the elements so sometimes it is not possible to dive this site.

Manta point have amazingly limestone cliffs that descend straight into the ocean. The swell can be stupendous, sometimes making entry impossible by mid-morning. There's a sandy bottom at 12-18m. The water is quite cold because it comes in from the ocean (22-26 degrees). You may also see other pelagics such as tuna and tiger mackerel.

Malibu Point

Located on south-east Nusa Penida, Malibu point has reef lies on a very steep slope, the topography of which is great with table corals and big bommies going to 22M.

Malibu Point is the best place to see shark, which may be true. However, the site is a long way from the mainland and is not always dive able due to the currents. At the northern end of the site, the currents can be very swirly, but it is a good place to see Shark, Manta and Mola-Mola.

SD is beautiful scenery at this site can only be experienced first hand. From SD point you can find large coral heads and a huge variety of marine life. The normally gentle currents here wind you past Turtles, Manta Rays, Sea Snakes, Octopus, White Tip Reef Sharks and some of the most diverse collections of corals and sponges in Bali.

During the Sunfish (Mola Mola) season it is also possible to get some good sightings here as the Sunfish drift along the reefs. Temperatures are usually 26 to 29C but may drop to around 20C, so please be prepared. This place is suitable for divers who seek a higher adventure. This Bali Dive Site is stretch along the north coast of Penida Island. The soft and hard corals are among the best in Bali.

Medewi Beach

Medewi Beach is one of the premiere surf spots in Bali. Medewi Beach is located just a few minutes from West Bali National Park. It is a beautiful beach area located near the village of Pulukan in West Bali. Medewi lies in the middle of Bali at a distance of about 75 km from Denpasar and 34 km west of Tabanan.

Stay in Medewi allows you access to the best surf and the best wildlife in Bali. Some of the animals you might see are black monkeys, barking deer, wild pig, iguana, python and green snake, along with 300 species of birds. You can take an organized trek through the park with a trained guide who can point out some of the many wonders of the tropical rain forest.

Medewi Beach is regarded as one of Bali's premier surfing destinations. This place is little far from Kuta and there is hardly any night life in this area. This is one of the reasons why Medewi Beach never becomes over crowded by tourists. The best time to surf here is early in the morning before the atmosphere becomes windy. The wave current of the water is mostly light here and the waves are easiest, which makes it an ideal spot for amateur surfers.

Bali's most important festival is the Galungan festival. It is a feast and festival which is held throughout the whole island and occurs every 210 days. It is believed that during this ten day period all Balinese gods will descend to earth for the festivities. Barongs prance from temple to temple and village to village in celebration of Galungan with the gods.

Galungan to the Balinese is the most important holiday period as it symbolizes the victory of Dharma, or virtue, upon Adharma, or all that is evil. The festivities are made extra special by the fitting of 'penjor' (brightly decorated very tall bamboo poles with woven young coconut leaves, cakes, fruits and flowers) on the right side of the entrance to every house which arch over roads looking like the top of a gothic cathedral.

The last day of the 10-day festival is the most important day. Known as Kuningan, it is the climax of the ten-day Galungan, and also serves to bringing the holiday period to a close. Kuningan is a day for prayer, and a special ritual ceremony is held for the spirits of the Balinese's ancestors. The Galungan Festival also sees the Balinese decked in their finest clothes and jewels for the day. It is a wonderful time to visit Bali and an especially beautiful sacred ceremony to photograph.

West Bali National Park ( Taman Nasional Bali Barat )

The area of Taman Nasional Bali Barat (West Bali National Park) situated at the Edge of north Bali Island is the stretch of green ground along the 150 km road that link Gilimanuk and Denpasar or Gilimanuk and Singaraja. It is located between district of Gerokgak in Buleleng regency and district of Melaya in Jembrana regency. It is reachable from Gilimanuk as the main entrance to West Bali, and from Denpasar. This 77,000-hectare park was established in 1941.

Lush forests still grow on Bali's southern and western slopes. West Bali National Park (covers 50,000 hectare on the western tip of the island. It also includes another 7,000 hectares of coral reef and coastal water. Considering in the small size of the island as a whole, the National Park is a major commitment towards attempting to preserve the wildlife found on Bali. The forest in this area has been determined as " Nature Park" - later on known as Taman Perlindungan Alam Bali - based on the decision of " Raja-Raja di Bali" (Kings in Bali) dated 13th August 1917 noE-1/4/5. This regulation is intended to preserve the flora and fauna in this area.

The region is watered by clear streams and traversed by footpaths, which offer often steep but relatively easy walking. Explore the forested hills, scrub acacia near the coast, and the unspoiled reefs and dense mangrove swamps along Teluk Terima and the bays to the East.

The diverse fauna exist here, including Jalak Putih Bali/Bali starling (Leuoeopsarrhotschildi) and Bull (Bos javanicus), Antelop (Muntiacus Muntjak), deer (Cervus timorensis), monkey (Presbytis cristata, Macaca sp.), Scaly anteater ( Manis javanica), boar (Sus scrofa), hedgehog (Hystrix javanica), Sturnus melanotenus, Sturnus contra, Acridotenis fuscus, Picoides mucet, Orialus chinensis, Haliastur sp., Galus sp.

Since Bali is such a densely populated, intensively cultivated island, very little wild forest is left. Such primary monsoon forests as remain (about 50,000 hectares) are found along the watershed at the western end of island, on the slopes of the mountains Sangiang, Merbuk, Musi, and Patas, an area not nearly as rugged as the higher mountains of eastern Bali.

More like a forest than a jungle, the park offers exceptional walking and first class panoramas. The types of the land are forest, savannah, mangrove, coast, beach, and conservation forest. The plantation that formed the pure forest are sawo kecik (Manilkara kooki) and palm (Borrassus flellifer).

I Gusti Nyoman Lempad (1862 – 1978) was known as a Balinese stone sculptor and architect (Undagi in Balinese) who built the palaces and temples in Ubud and its neighboring villages. In his later years, he produced hundreds of linear drawings of Balinese mythology and folklore. Lempad of Bali, a short documentary film produced by John Darling and Lorne Blair, tells the story of Lempad at the end of his life and his cremation ceremony.

Lempad’s exact birth date, as many Balinese of his time, is unknown. But he was married when Krakatoa erupted in 1883. He died on April 25, 1978 at his home in Ubud, Bali. He gathered his family and asked them to bathe him and then died. The Balinese believed that he chose the time of his death at the day that considered most holy.

Although he maintained a close friendship with foreign artists, including Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies, Lempad never compromised his distinctive identity as a Balinese artist, and one with a broad range of talents in many media; painting, sculpture and architecture.

Nyepi. Every religion or culture all over the world has their own way to define and celebrate their new year. For example, the Chinese have the Imlek year and to celebrate it, have, as they called it in their own language, "Gong Xi Fat Choy". The Moslem societies have their Muharam year, and any of the people over the world using the Gregorian calendar, celebrate the New Year on January 1st.

The same thing also occurs in Bali, however the Balinese use many different calendar systems. They have adopted the Gregorian calendar for business and government purposes. But for the endless procession of holy days, temple anniversaries, celebrations, sacred dances, building houses, wedding ceremonies, death and cremation processes and other activities that define Balinese life, they have two calendar systems. The first is the Pawukon (from the word Wuku which means week) and Sasih (which is means month). Wuku consists of 30 items starting from Sinta, the first Wuku and end up with the Watugunung the last one. The Pawukon, a 210-day ritual calendar brought over from Java in the 14th century, is a complex cycle of numerological conjunctions that provides the basic schedule for ritual activities on Bali. Sasih, a parallel system of Indian origin, is a twelve month lunar calendar that starts with the vernal equinox and is equally important in determining when to pay respect to the Gods.

Westerners open the New Year in revelry, however, in contrast, the Balinese open their New Year in silence. This is called Nyepi Day, the Balinese day of Silence, which falls on the day following the dark moon of the spring equinox, and opens a new year of the Saka Hindu era which began in 78 A.D.

Nyepi is a day to make and keep the balance of nature. It is based on the story of when King Kaniska I of India was chosen in 78 A.D. The King was famous for his wisdom and tolerance for the Hinduism and Buddhism societies. In that age, Aji Saka did Dharma Yatra (the missionary tour to promote and spread Hinduism) to Indonesia and introduce the Saka year.

The lead upto Nyepi day is as follows:

Melasti or Mekiyis or Melis (three days before Nyepi)

Melasti is meant to clean the pratima or arca or pralingga (statue), with symbols that help to concentrate the mind in order to become closer to God. The ceremony is aimed to clean all nature and its content, and also to take the Amerta (the source for eternal life) from the ocean or other water resources (ie lake, river, etc). Three days before Nyepi, all the effigies of the Gods from all the village temples are taken to the river in long and colourful ceremonies. There, they have are bathed by the Neptune of the Balinese Lord, the God Baruna, before being taken back home to their shrines.

Tawur Kesanga (the day before Nyepi)

Exactly one day before Nyepi, all villages in Bali hold a large exorcism ceremony at the main village cross road, the meeting place of demons. They usually make Ogoh-ogoh (the fantastic monsters or evil spirits or the Butha Kala made of bamboo) for carnival purposes.

The Ogoh-ogoh monsters symbolize the evil spirits surrounding our environment which have to be got rid of from our lives . The carnivals themselves are held all over Bali following sunset. Bleganjur, a Balinese gamelan music accompanies the procession. Some are giants taken from classical Balinese lore. All have fangs, bulging eyes and scary hair and are illuminated by torches.The procession is usually organised by the Seka Teruna, the youth organisation of Banjar.
When Ogoh-ogoh is being played by the Seka Teruna, everyone enjoys the carnival. In order to make a harmonic relation between human being and God, human and human, and human and their environments, Tawur Kesanga is performed in every level of society, from the people's house. In the evening, the Hindus celebrating Ngerupuk, start making noises and light burning torches and set fire to the Ogoh-ogoh in order to get the Bhuta Kala, evil spirits, out of our lives.

Nyepi

On Nyepi day itself, every street is quiet - there are nobody doing their normal daily activities. There is usually Pecalangs (traditional Balinese security man) who controls and checks for street security. Pecalang wear a black uniform and a Udeng or Destar (a Balinese traditional "hat" that is usually used in ceremony). The Pecalangs main task is not only to control the security of the street but also to stop any activities that disturb Nyepi. No traffic is allowed, not only cars but also people, who have to stay in their own houses. Light is kept to a minimum or not at all, the radio or TV is turned down and, of course, no one works. Even love making, this ultimate activity of all leisure times, is not supposed to take place, nor even attempted. The whole day is simply filled with the barking of a few dogs, the shrill of insect and is a simple long quiet day in the calendar of this otherwise hectic island. On Nyepi the world expected to be clean and everything starts anew, with Man showing his symbolic control over himself and the "force" of the World, hence the mandatory religious control.

Ngembak Geni (the day after Nyepi)
Ngembak is the day when Catur Berata Penyepian is over and Hindus societies usually visit to forgive each other and doing the Dharma Canthi. Dharma Canthi are activities of reading Sloka, Kekidung, Kekawin, etc.(ancient scripts containing songs and lyrics).

From the religious and philosophy point of view, Nyepi is meant to be a day of self introspection to decide on values, eg humanity, love, patience, kindness, etc., that should kept forever. Balinese Hindus have many kind of celebrations (some sacred days) but Nyepi is, perhaps the most important of the island's religious days and the prohibitions are taken seriously, particularly in villages outside of Bali's southern tourist belt. Hotels are exempt from Nyepi's rigorous practices but streets outside will be closed to both pedestrians and vehicles (except for airport shuttles or emergency vehicles) and village wardens (Pecalang) will be posted to keep people off the beach. So wherever you happen to be staying on Nyepi Day in Bali, this will be a good day to spend indoors. Indeed Nyepi day has made Bali a unique island.

Penglipuran Village

Penglipuran Village is a traditional tropical Balinese countryside village located in the Bangli region in the middle eastern area of the island of Bali. Bangli is famous for particularly hot food and has an excellent history of uncertainty and working the fields. Most of the local people of the area work on the land farming and culturing rice and other tropical spices and fruits.

At over 700 meters above sea level the journey to get to Bangli is incredible and the views throughout are the relaxing including the rice padi plains and hills as you approach the mountains and then followed by the slow winding roads that lead you up the mountainside and which is coated in tropical trees and woodlands. Along the whole way you will pass little villages and temples of the traditional nature that offer a cultural dimension to the areas beautiful geography. At this height the incredible views of Bali are enjoyed at a lower and fresher climate then in the south of the island and extend across to the towing mountains and volcanoes as well as down the hillside and across the east of the Bali.

It is said that the area of Penglipuran Village takes it’s name from the word ‘Pengeling Pura, which translates roughly as remember your ancestors although another school of though is that the word Penglipur meaning ‘entertainer’ is the origin from which the Penglipuran Village has derived as past kings of the ancient times have been known to retire to the area when in need of some time out from their duties and when in need of cheering up when upset and had royal entertainers based in the area for this reason. Either way it he area is both beautiful and entertaining to this day and well worth an excursion when staying in the Ubud area or if planning a trip around the mountain areas.

The residential areas of Penglipuran Village have a very particular look that is unique to the area and extremely aesthetically pleasing with rows of very small but tall traditionally built houses that are very decorative and with thatched roofs. These roads are straight and within the field areas meaning there is a tropical country feel as well as being very culturally interesting. All of these roads are inline with the direction of the mount Agung, which is the most holy peak and one of the most holy places on the entire island. This gives a lovely effect and also extenuates the impressive grandeur of Bali’s largest peak. These cobbled roads sharing their direction with the family temples that can be found in the gardens also facing mount Agung as with the rest of the island the mountain is very important to the culture.

In Penglipuran Village its importance is even stronger which is not surprising as it is likely that the villagers’ ancestors where the people who have suffered the most from the eruptions that have taken place in the past. This being said, there has not been an eruption for many years and although the peak is still deemed as active, another eruption is not expected for a long time.

Until now leak is still mysterious. Not only the figures or forms, but also the learning process. According to the existing understanding in the community, the process of mastering the power leak is divided into four parts, namely a way to learn, ask at the place haunted, the science of inheritance or descent, and by way of purchase.

Leak through the learning phase is, by self-study from books or teachers about the process and rituals leak gradually. Garuda Wisnu Kencana

The statue of Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) is located on Jimbaran hill ungasan naughty. approximately 40km south of Denpasar. This cultural park in the area stands a giant statue of the god Vishnu (the god guardian) who was riding an eagle.

This statue is the work of renowned sculptor nyoman nuarta. Area first Bali GWK Cultural Park located at an altitude of 146 meters above the ground surface or 263 feet above sea surface. People can be seen in the story of Garuda Garuda & his Kingdom which tells about an act of devotion and sacrifice of the Garuda bird to save his mother from slavery that eventually Wisnu.

Statue protected by the god is made from a mixture of copper and steel weighing 4,000 tons, with a high sekitar146 meters wide and 66 meters very tall and big. This statue has not been completed and if completed it will be the largest statue in the world and defeat the statue Lyberty

Dreamland Beach

Dreamland beach is on the south side of Bali, about 30 to 40 minutes from Kuta. There are 2 alternative ways to go to Dreamland. You can either go through the Jimbaran Bay area or pass through the Udayana University (a well-known public university in Bali); both ways are easy to follow. If you do get lost, ask for directions to Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK). It’s a famous cultural park located in Bukit Unggasan, Jimbaran. Here you can find a 75 meter-high and 60-meter wide figure of god Visnu, one of the Trimurti symbols in Hinduism. The status is made by I Nyoman Nuarta, and is now still unfinished. When it is done, it will be taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York!

About 15 minutes from GWK, you will find a big statue of Garuda (the symbol of Indonesia), on the right side of the road. That means you’re just a stone throw’s away from Dreamland Beach. Dreamland Beach is located on a big-deserted property, a failed Pecatu Graha development. You will probably have to pay about Rp 5000 for the entry. When you get to the end of the road, you will be on top of a cliff, with the big blue ocean’s sky in front of you. Look down! That’s Dreamland Beach…

You have to walk a little then down a path of stairs to reach the beach.. Once on the sand, you will find rented umbrellas and beach benches facing the beach. You can also order food and drinks from the local traditional cafés available all around the beach. The cafes might seem common and usual, but many of them actually serve European dishes which is out of the ordinary for this setting. Planning to spend the night? Some of the local cafes offer humble accommodations at a reasonable price (ranged between Rp 50,000 to Rp 200,000 per night). In the evening, enjoy the sunset whilst several tourists build a campfire on the beach, or just play a light game of beach ball. As for me, I prefer swimming offshore and enjoy the sunset from there.

There are not many activities to be done here at night.

The electricity is turned off after 10 pm and thus candles are lit to chase away the deep darkness of the night. After having dinner, the best thing you can do is to read a book or have a draft of cold beer. Otherwise, you can go upstairs to where most of the rooms are and enjoy the scenery. The moon’s reflection dancing in a flurry of lights on the ocean’s surface is simply breathtaking. During the peak season (July and December), some of the rooms on this floor will be more packed so at least you are not alone and will have company to chat with along with your own group of friends. It is always interesting meeting other travelers and sharing experiences. When you finally feel like sleeping, go back to your room and snuggle under the blanket. The lullaby of tides breaking on the shore is such a peaceful sound to sleep to. Being in Dreamland is like being in a dream you wish you will never wake up from.
