Winter coats are a must... at least when you live somewhere that is cold more often than it's warm. It's great to have options and choices to keep you warm. For some time now I've been looking around looking for a short warm winter coat. Jackets are one of the few things that I usually still buy instead of sewing. The problem is that even though bomber jackets are all the rage recently, it's almost impossible to find one warm enough to wear in winter. Since I didn't really have a choice, I decided to sew myself what I wanted. It might not look like much in this photo because I had it smooshed into my suitcase while traveling but it is exactly what I wanted.

Considering I didn't actually have a pattern for this coat I went fancier than I usually do on a first attempt. I used a nice warm wool and an even warmer quilted lining; making it deliciously warm without being bulky. It's perfect for winter and with all the bells and whistles I added (zippers, pockets, snaps, and removable faux fur collar) I made a coat which I think is super cute. It's great having a casual jacket to wear when the occasion calls for it.

She might not look like much, mostly because of my bad habit of forgetting to iron before photographing my clothes, but I'm quite smitten. Say hello to my new Linden sweater. It was a quick and easy sew and I'm very happy with how it turned out. It's great adding some vaguely basic pieces to my wardrobe. A navy sweater is definitely on the basics list but this adds some interest with the texture of the stripes.

My interests and likes go through waves. Right now black & white prints are a favourite of mine. I bought this one a while back during my trip home to Montreal. I really like graphic/abstract prints and this one is fairly basic but interesting. I bought a lot of the fabric so I knew I wanted to make a top with long sleeves. I purchased this McCall's pattern a long time ago and never got around to making anything out of it so I decided I would finally use it.

I can't say I like the pattern. I like the shape and fit of the body of the top but I'm not a fan of how loose fitting the sleeves are. Overall though, I like how this top came out. This print and my love of button downs ended up filling a great gap in my wardrobe.

Finished - Transparent Black Fringe Top

I bought this fabric a long time ago and loved how fun it was. The black fringy chiffon pieces on the transparent fabric were unique and beautiful. I'm a big fan of playful fabrics and really loved the way this dress turned out. The only negative thing about party dresses is the amount of wear they get. Obviously that sucks when you really love what you made. I decided to fix that by making a very similar tank top which could get a lot more wear.

I finished this top a while ago and just never got around to showing it here on the blog. It has definitely gotten a lot of wear since I've finished it. You'd think that a transparent fringe top wouldn't be normal day wear but that's probably because you're not me. It's black so it doesn't stand out that much but the texture helps add interest to any outfit. I also personally love transparent tops because you can add a different level of interest to it by changing up what you wear underneath. You can choose different colours or styles of tanks to wear underneath which makes it look a bit different every time you wear it. You might be able to see in this photo that this time I chose a black lace bodysuit which gives it even more layers to the look. I'm a big fan of layering which makes this top a perfect addition to my wardrobe.

It's important to sew things you can get a lot of wear out of. So when you live somewhere that's almost never warm than means things with sleeves. I made this same pattern in yellow stripes to practice before trying it out in this fabric which I really liked. The thickness and the texture were perfect for a warm jacket.

I was a little bit conflicted at first on how it turned out. I was a bit taken aback because I thought it looked a bit much like a bathrobe. But with time and wear I've gotten over it and really liked the end result.

I still have quite a few pieces I haven't gotten around to posting on the blog. The goal is to get them up before the New Year. So first on the list is this striped jacket. At the time I bought a fabric that I wanted to make a kimono wrap like jacket but I wanted to try the idea out first in something else. I had this yellow fabric laying around so I decided to try the jacket idea out first.

Considering it's cold outside longer than it's warm, the more jackets/long-sleeves the better. This jacket turned out better than I expected it to be. I decided very quickly after sewing this beaut up I would get right on sewing another up!

I'm a big believer in the idea of having multiples when you find a piece of clothing you really like. When I made this orange top, I fell in love right away and barely took it off. Considering orange isn't exactly the most wearable colour it actually says a lot more about how much I really loved the top. When I bought this blue fabric I was more than excited to be able to make another version of the top in my favourite colour.

I'm still in love with the texture and asymmetry of this top but I did make a slight alteration from the previous version. In the new version I made less of a difference in the hems so that the proportions work a bit better. I love having another version of my asymmetric fringe top and it's great that I've been able to improve it a bit.

When I saw this fabric I knew I wanted a dress. I love the print and wanted something that really shows it off just like this dress.

I'm a lover of a wrap, always have been. There is something nice and easy about just slipping on a piece and tying it closed. It also helps that wrap skirts (or dresses) that tie are incredibly easy to make.

When I made the matching tank, I added the orange because I thought it would be an interesting addition to a pretty dull print. I liked it on the tank but I love it on the skirt. The whole skirt is simple, soft, and cute making it a great wear.

What I Wore - B&W Print Mixing

The great thing about having so much black & white clothes is you can just toss a whole bunch of it on and it will go together. The easiest way to wear a print mixing outfit is by having the prints be the same colour. I can't tell you the amount of times I've worn an outfit that is some sort of variation on this same theme, black & white.

Yeah, another tank top, not exactly exciting... but nonetheless, here's a new make of mine.

Lately it's all about curved hems for me. I like them because they look nice layered underneath sweaters which are what I wear most of the year. Sometimes you have to think about how you're wearing a piece instead of just what you want to make.

Black & White prints are one of my favourites. This one... is particularly awesome. The print and the fabric together are perfect. I decided right after I made this top I knew I wanted a skirt right away. Nice flowy fabric deserves a nice flowy skirt which is why I made this pleated circle skirt.

Matching separates once again because it's just the way I roll.

I don't usually get Septembers like this so I've been taking advantage of it. I've been pulling out dresses and skirts like my life depended on it.

I've mentioned before the only issue I have with dresses is they don't offer as much of an opportunity to change how an outfit looks. Usually I rely on accessories to alter my looks; this time however, I added a bodysuit with cap sleeves to change things up. I really like how it looks like a different dress with the bodysuit!

I used to think the idea of some sort of woven wall hanging was not at all my style. I would imagine
macramé wall hangings that would only fit with a strong hippy style. But these diys have definitely changed my mind! Hopefully you'll see something that would be worthy of a weekend diy project.

Sometimes when I need something to distract myself I like to whip up a quick tank top. I've done enough of them that it takes no time at all to sew. I find it sewing something nice quickly very therapeutic.

I liked the mint tank I made a little while ago so much I did basically the same thing but this time with a curved hem. It's a simple top but when you have a really nice fabric it will stand out no matter how plain the top is.

What I Wore - Plaid Skirt

There are leaves on the ground like it's fall but the weather still feels very summery. It's actually nice enough outside that I'm still rocking miniskirts. I showed you this skirt before but never got a picture up of how it looks like on.

I like the fact that it's a skirt with pockets but the pockets I chose to add might not have been the best choice. I added the pockets so that they protrude out a bit because I thought that would be cute. But the protruding pockets and having fabric that wrinkles easily means the pockets just look wrinkly most of the time. I still like the skirt and wore it often this summer but it just didn't end up being a great as it could have been.

After making this dress and tank out of this mint fabric there wasn't much left to work with. Instead of just leaving the tiny piece of fabric with all my others, I decided to quickly sew something with it... a new crop top.

If my closet is going to be full of crop tops I might as well make an effort into making them different. This episode of lazy girl attempts to be different, why not add a sash? Technically it's the same idea I had with the mint tank I made, but this one is in a different place. So... not that creative but I really like it anyways!
