The Pattern Recognition and Image Processing Group headed by Prof. Thomas Brox has openings for PostDoc and PhD positions in Computer Vision. We are seeking applicants with a strong interest in performing cutting edge research in this very active and exciting research area.

Successful candidates will join a young and dynamic research group pursuing research that has strong impact in the field. The group’s core research areas are video analysis and learning from video. You will work on recognition, structure-from-motion, or motion segmentation, but especially PostDoc candidates are encouraged to also build upon their previous research experience and may work on related computer vision or machine learning topics of their interest.

The open positions are fully funded with a salary according to TVL13 (approximately 38k-45k Euro or $46k-$54k depending on proficiency). The PhD positions come with direct supervision by the professor and support to enable completion of the thesis within 3 years. Funding for up to 2 more years is available. PostDocs will be mentored to build up their own academic career.

The University of Freiburg is one of the nine top universities in Germany, with the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing Group being directly involved in the bioss cluster of excellence. The Department of Computer Science hosts many top scientists, among them renowned experts in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Freiburg, the warmest spot in Germany, is located in the very southwest, and is less than 30 minutes away from both France and Switzerland. It is situated at the foot of the Schwarzwald and is close to the Alps with many possibilities for recreational activities.

Ideal candidates should have an excellent degree (M.Sc. or equivalent for the PhD position; PhD for the PostDoc position) in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. They should have a strong mathematical background, solid programming experience in C++ and ideally Matlab. Above all, they must have a strong motivation, interest for detailed analysis, and a distinct desire to learn. Prior experience in computer vision or machine learning is advantageous and required for the PostDoc position. The PostDoc position also requires a strong track record consisting of at least one publication at ICCV, ECCV, CVPR, NIPS, or ICML. Fluency in English is required (both written and spoken).

Your application must comprise:

1. Motivation letter
Your 2-3 page letter of motivation should contain the following details (not necessarily in this order):
a) What is your background? In which fields have you studied/worked before and how do you think this can be useful for the present job?
b) What attracts you to the field of computer vision?
c) Which problem(s) in computer vision are you most interested in? Pick one and describe some coarse ideas how you would approach the problem.
d) Which skills, what personality do you think can you contribute to the group? What kind of person are you (e.g. creative, analytic, communicative, pragmatic, etc.) and what kind of work do you like most? We prefer to fill the positions with different personalities, so be as honest as possible.
e) Why do you wish to continue your career as a PhD student/Postdoc?
You may add other details to your motivation letter if you find them important.

2. Curriculum Vitae
Send a classical tabular CV with your contact details, your date-of-birth, a current photograph, and all stages of education and employment. Begin and end dates should be month-accurate.

3. List of skills, awards, publications, hobbies
List your skills, especially proficiency in languages (including the level of proficiency), that you think might be useful for the job. Also list any awards you might have got or papers you might have published already. You may also mention hobbies if you like.

4. Score records
Send copies of all your degrees and score records. If scores are neither compatible with the German nor the US system, give indication how your scores can be translated into one of these systems or give evidence in which quantile of all graduates you are at your school.

The applicant must also fulfill the following requirements:

1. Have interest in promoting international understanding and friendship, and is able to attend SISF meetings (meetings are held 6 times/year).
2. Does not receive any sort of scholarship or funding from other parties.
3. Holds legal residence status as a college student.
4. Does not have a parent employed in Japan.
5. Does not hold a doctorate degree.
6. Is enrolled in a program with more than 1 year left until graduation/completion (from April 2011). This restriction does not apply to doctorate program.
7.Have good communication skill in Japanese.

Scholarship for Short-Term Exchange Students

This scholarship is provided to students who are recommended by those designated universities that have secured an agreement of recommendation with the Sato International Scholarship Foundation. Scholarship as well as travel fee to Japan is provided to those students from the aforesaid countries who will study in Japan on a short term based on the agreement among universities for study exchange.

PhD Studentship - Optical Measurement of Precision Surfaces

A postgraduate studentship is available to investigate new methods to increase the capability of optical interferometry and to introduce new levels of traceability in the measurement of precision engineering surfaces.
With the lateral resolution of a few micrometres and an axial resolution of a few nanometres interferometery is becoming an increasingly popular means to characterise engineering surfaces. As a non-contacting technique, commercial interferometers make an indirect estimate of surface form deduced from measurements of the light scattered from the surface. Due to the complex interaction between light and rough surfaces anomalous behaviour can occur and, for this reason, traditional contacting methods making more direct measurements using stylus-based instrumentation remain the basis of international (ISO) surface standards. The purpose of this project is to develop optimisation strategies based on new, more sophisticated surface scattering models to increase measurement capability and to estimate uncertainty in optical interferometers.
The project is sponsored by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Taylor Hobson Ltd. It is expected that the student will spend some time at one or both of the industrial partners' premises.
A first degree (First class or High 2:1 honours) in the physical sciences or mathematics is required and an interest in optics would be an advantage. Strong analysis skills and proficiency in numerical computing are essential and experience of optimisation techniques would be an advantage.
The preferred starting dates are 1 October 2010 or 1 December 2010 and the studentship will have a stipend of £8,000-£11,500 per annum, tax free, plus tuition fees. This studentship is open to UK/EU and international students.

The EWKLP has a three-monthcurriculum, which synthesizes the best practices of both the East and West. Qualifications

In addition to qualifying for the Fujitsu Scholarship, you must also qualify for admission to JAIMS' EWKLP. For complete EWKLP information, refer to the EWKLP Application Packet contained at the bottom of the Application Checklist section. Fujitsu Scholarship qualifications include the following:

A bachelor's degree or a degree equivalent to a four-year standard baccalaureate degree in any discipline from a regionally or nationally accredited institution.

Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

A minimum TOEFL score of 577/233/90 (paper/computer/Internet), TOEIC score of 750, or IELTS overall band test result of 6.5 or higher from tests taken between March 2008 and March 2010. Applicants who received a bachelor's degree or an advanced degree with at least two years of full-time coursework within the last five years from a regionally accredited institution in the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, or New Zealand; or from a university in Canada, Africa or Singapore, where English is the language of instruction are exempt from taking the TOEFL, TOEIC, or IELTS.

A minimum of three years of relevant full-time work experience (five years preferred) at the time of application.

Stipend Toward Living Expenses *

Airfare:
Fujitsu Ltd. will provide a round-trip air ticket to cover transportation from the participant's home country to Honolulu, and back. Health Insurance:

Housing Arrangements:
JAIMS will assist in locating appropriate housing in Honolulu for all participants. Fujitsu Ltd. will provide and pay for participant accommodations in Japan.

Visa Arrangements:
When applicable, participants will be assisted in obtaining the F-1 Student visa to enter the U.S. EWKLP participants will be assisted with the appropriate visa to enter Japan, if necessary. The expense of obtaining the visa is the financial responsibility of the participant.

BI Norwegian School of Management offers a four year Ph.D. programme in business administration. The programme features six areas of specialisation: Finance, Economics, Strategic Management, Marketing, Leadership and Organization in addition to Innovation and Entrepreneurship. We are pleased to announce seven Ph.D. Research Scholarship positions available for two of the areas of specialisation. One of the scholarship positions is funded through NFR. The four-year programme is designed for talented students who wish to pursue an international career within academia and who can contribute on the international arena with their research and publications. Applicants must have completed a two year (120 ECTS) Master's Degree with thesis work (preferably a Master of Science) by September 2010 to be considered for a scholarship. The four-year scholarships are set according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale, and currently pay NOK 344,200 per year. The positions are linked to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (Statens Pensjonskasse).The scholarships require 25% teaching responsibilities (35 teaching hours pr. year). The compulsory duties may also include other work to be decided on by the relevant department. Ph.D. students will have their place of work at BI Norwegian School of Management in Oslo, Norway.

The 1-year Master in Public Administration (MPA) programme provides an intensive, interdisciplinary course of study for experienced professionals who wish to acquire new knowledge and skills to enhance their leadership and managerial capabilities. This innovative programme can be taken full-time or part-time.

Taught by expert faculty using a problem-based learning approach and real-world case studies, MPA students learn to apply the techniques of policy analysis and programme evaluation to resolve complex multi-dimensional policy challenges, as well as sharpen their leadership and communication skills. The School also conducts an active programme of seminars and public lectures by political, not-for-profit and business leaders to enable all students to complement their formal learning with the opportunity to interact with distinguished individuals who are shaping the future.

The MPA class comprises approximately 60 accomplished and motivated individuals who bring with them a wealth of diverse experiences to enhance the classroom learning experience. Students come from many different countries – from Southeast Asia, South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific and Africa. They work in a variety of sectors such as finance, trade, education, media, health, transport, housing, foreign affairs and development. Despite their short time together, or perhaps because of the shared experience of learning and working under tremendous pressure, MPA students forge an enduring international network of professional and personal contacts.

The School expects its MPA graduates to serve in a wide range of middle- to senior-level positions in the government, non-profit organisations, international organisations and the private sector.

Scholarships

The scholarships below are offered on a competitive basis. Applicants must have good academic and professional records. They must also have demonstrated leadership and a desire to contribute to public service. Not all the awards will be made unless thereare candidates of sufficient merit. Scholars may not concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship or award without the prior approval of the School.There is no bond or obligation for the scholar to be employed by NUS or in Singapore, except for the Lien Foundation scholarship.

PhD in statistical methodology in vaccine and infectious disease research. The research activities are part of an interuniversity collaboration between the Institute VAXINFECTIO of the University of Antwerp, and the Center for Statistics, Hasselt University. The main interdisciplinary research themes are i) to improve and/or increase the understanding of the immune system, ii) to develop strategies for the containment of antibiotic resistance and iii) to develop new methodology in modeling infectious disease spread.

The research is focused on the development and implementation of chemical probes for reactive oxygen species. The ultimate goal of the research is to determine the mechanisms involved in photochemical virus inactivation, relevant to natural and engineered water purification. This project will bring together chemical synthesis, photochemistry, spectroscopy, and novel analytical techniques, and is a collaborative effort with the group of Prof. Tamar Kohn at EPFL. This project is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The ideal candidate will have experience in synthetic organic chemistry and a strong interest in environmental organic chemistry. Good knowledge of English (spoken and written) is essential. Starting January 2010, the laboratory of Environmetry and Geomatics (UCL/AGRO/MILA/ENGE) is looking to appoint an enthusiastic Ph.D. student in the framework of a joint research project entitled “Modelling the distribution of sediment, water, carbon and energy fluxes along the hillslope”.

· About the project

A recent key area of interest is the characterization of linkage between masses and energy fluxes of water, carbon, and energy fluxes at the geomorphologic hillslope level, as their coupling induce spatially and temporally structured patterns with non negligible attached uncertainties. The final objective is to obtain a reliable model at the hillslope scale, with possible extensions at the regional level.

· Working environment

The successful candidate will lead the statistical/physical data analysis and modeling part of the project, among a team of three Ph.D. students. He/She will work mainly inside the Environmetry and Geomatics (UCL/AGRO/MILA/ENGE) research team of the Université catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium (http://www.uclouvain.be/mila).

The successful candidate will implement a research project on the weather insurancedesign. The project will be financed by SwissNational Science Foundation and an ETHZurich internal PhD-grant. The
objective of the project is to enhance the methodology of the weather insurance contract design considering conditions of limited relevance and applicability of historical data. The project will focus on the
application of extremal dependence analysis and elaboration of the methodology for the utilization of a priori information available in the form of climate change projections. The project will be conducted based on historical data, climate change projections and results of crop simulation models for Kazakhstan where grain producers are especially prone to risk of drought.

From 1 January 2010, for new PhD applicants there will be one application process for admission to the PhD programme and University and for PhD scholarships. The combined application form will be available from late 2009 on the Faculty of Graduate Research Website www.victoria.ac.nz/fgr/prospective-phds/scholarships.aspx
Please note: Although applications will be considered from students seeking scholarship support for a PhD degree for which they are already enrolled at Victoria, if you have applied for a Victoria PhD scholarship in the past, you must provide updated or additional information to apply for a second round. Such applications must be accompanied by clear support from supervisors.

Tenure of award
Scholarships will normally be tenable for three years. For a student who has already been enrolled for a PhD at Victoria for more than three months at the time when the offer of a Scholarship is made, the maximum length of tenure of the Scholarship will be reduced at the discretion of the Scholarships Committee.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Offers of Victoria Phd Scholarships will be made approximately six weeks after each closing date in March, July and November of the year of application. Because some applicants may in the event decline the offer of a Scholarship with the result that further offers have to be made, it is possible that some applicants will not be finally notified of the success or otherwise of their applications three months after application. If you are unsuccessful you will be notified of this and if you are on the researve list by email in the first instance. Please provide a clear and correct email address.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
Scholarship recipients shall be required to devote themselves full-time to their programme of research during the tenure of the scholarship and may not hold a position of emolument without the approval of the University Scholarships Committee. Approval may be given for scholarship recipients to undertake paid employment (usually tutoring) for up to a maximum of 600 hours in any one calendar year. All requests to undertake part-time employment must be supported in writing by the supervisor.
Once the period of tenure of a scholarship has commenced, the University Scholarships Committee may, at its sole discretion, grant a scholarship recipient a deferment of their scholarship for a period not exceeding one year. In most cases such a deferment will coincide with a formal suspension from their PhD enrolment.
A scholarship shall be terminated if a scholarship recipient ceases to resume the aforesaid programme of research within one month of the last day of the period of the deferment.
If an award is made to an existing PhD candidate the tenure of the award will be reduced.

Additional information
Several types of Victoria PhD Scholarship may be offered. Most successful applicants will be offered a Victoria PhD Scholarship which provide an annual stipend of NZ$21,000 plus tuition fees. However, a small number of Vice Chancellor's Scholarships will be offered to the top applicants each round. These provide an annual stipend of $24,000 plus tuition fees. A number of Victoria Doctoral Assistantships are also offered each round. These consist of an annual stipend $15,000 plus tuition fees and an emploment component of $5,000.
Applicants, other than those who have completed all of their study at Victoria, must include a certified copy of their academic record from other institutions with this application. Applicants whose degree has been conferred at any university other than a New Zealand University will be considered in two categories:
Category 1 - applicants from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Germany or Australia must supply an original or certified copy of their university transcript.
Category 2 - applicants from any other country must have their transcript verified and assessed with a course by course evaluation by one of the below educational evaluators:

Center for Data-Intensive Systems, Daisy (http://daisy.aau.dk/), has
several fully funded Ph.D. positions available.
The positions concern research in data management technologies that
aim to allow energy distribution infrastructures to manage higher
amounts of renewable energy and to better balance supply and demand.
The production of renewable energy depends on external factors such as
wind and sunlight. Hence, available energy from renewable sources can
only be predicted, not planned, This renders it challenging for energy
distributors to efficiently accommodate renewable energy sources.
The research will explore the use of so-called micro requests for
controlling demand and supply at the level of individual households.
The research calls for advanced, distributed aggregation of requests
as well as novel forecasting techniques. Key technology areas include:
cloud and distributed computing, real-time data warehousing, sensor
and stream data management, indexing, and query processing.
With more than 20 members, Daisy provides a very active research
environment that is well integrated into the global database research
community. Aalborg is the center of a beautiful region of Denmark,
with nice beaches, unique nature, and clean air.
The monthly salary is approximately DKK 24,000 before taxes (EUR 1
approximately equals DKK 7.5).
Key qualifications needed:
An M.S. in Computer Science or a closely related field from a
recognized institution and with excellent results. The ideal candidate
has a strong background in databases, algorithms, and data structures.
Very good communication skills in English, oral as well as written.

OCIS - Oxford Scholarships

Launched in 2009, the OCIS - Oxford Scholarships support British Muslim students as well as those from developing countries in Asia and Africa to read for degrees at the University of Oxford. Under the programme, up to five scholarships each year are available for undergraduate students from Muslim communities in Britain. A further five scholarships are available for postgraduate students, at least two of whom will be UK students from Muslim communities, while the rest will be students from specified countries in Asia or Africa. The scholarships are available to students undertaking study in a range of fields relevant to the needs of Muslim societies.
Applications for OCIS - Oxford Postgraduate Scholarships for the academic year 2010-2011 are invited through the University's normal admissions procedures. The scholarships cover University and college fees and a grant for living costs. An application for a scholarship is made at the time of completion of the Graduate Application Form. Research Positions in Agricultural Innovation Processes and Policies

RIU is a research and development programme designed to put agricultural research into use for developmental purposes and to conduct research on how to do this. The programme is funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). It follows earlier investments by DFID in agricultural and natural resources research supported through its renewable natural resources research strategy (RRNRRS). While this strategy delivered high quality research the uptake of this research and its impact on social and economic progress was modest.
RIU has appointed the LINK programme (www.innovationstudies.org) of UNU-MERIT (www.merit.unu) to act as its Central Research Team (CRT) with overall responsibility for designing and implementing its research. The CRT is headed by Dr. Andy Hall. Research in Africa is coordinated by Dr. Jeroen Dijkman. Research in Asia is coordinated by Dr. Rasheed Sulaiman.The CRT now wishes to appoint up to 6 research fellows from Asia and Africa to help study RIU’s portfolio of activities in these regions.
These positions would suit junior to middle-level research professionals who are interested in undertaking and publishing empirical research on agricultural and rural innovation. Research fellows will need to be able to work with a large degree of independence and deliver high quality written output. Support and mentoring will be provided by the CRT. Positions could be full or part-time.
Candidates should have:

Research experience on agricultural and rural innovation policies and processes
A recent relevant PhD is desirable, but candidates with a strong relevant publication record would also be considered
Positions could be full or part-time

These positions will be located in the regions where RIU works. Appointments will be made as personal services agreements (PSA) with UNU-MERIT. RIU is sponsored by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) until June 2011.

Applications are invited for a SEPnet funded (South-East Physics network, http://www.sepnet.ac.uk/) PhD Studentship within the Astronomy Unit, School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).
The project is related to exciting, major unsolved problems of solar physics such as coronal heating http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/science/mysteries_l1/corona.html and solar flare dynamics. Type III radio bursts are believed to come from solar flare electrons that travel upwards, away from the Sun, on open magnetic field lines. The proposed work aims to fill the gap in understanding how the upwards moving electrons are accelerated and produce the observed radio emission. This will be achieved through kinetic-scale modelling of the phenomenon and numerical simulation results will be compared with radio and other wavelength observations. The project benefits from access to large-scale parallel 1000 core processor cluster via UKMHD consortium, while the radio data will be available via participation of QMUL in LOFAR-UK and SEPnet Astro consortia (http://astro.kent.ac.uk/SEPNET/). The LOw Frequency ARray, LOFAR (http://www.lofar-uk.org/), is a next-generation software-driven telescope currently under construction in the Netherlands and UK.
Dr David Tsiklauri, Senior Lecturer at Astronomy Unit, QMUL will be the PhD project supervisor, while Dr Aris Karastergiou, Astrophysics, Oxford University, will act in a co-supervisory capacity.
Applicants should have a good Honours degree in Physics or Applied Mathematics (at least 2:1 or equivalent) or a lower second class plus a Master's (MPhys) qualification. Programming experience in any high level language is highly desirable.
Candidates will receive full fees and tax free stipend of circa £13,000 per annum for three years.
