I know how the affiliate marketing game goes because that is what I do full-time. I know the ins and outs of the whole process, and the excitement of a well thought out and perfectly executed affiliate campaign, which results in a steady stream of affiliate commissions. I also know what it is like to watch those same successful campaigns dry up suddenly for no logical reason at all. Sometimes they never even get off the ground when all the indicators are there that they should be profitable.

If this has happened to you before here is what I think the main problem is and a solution to deal with it.

If you are an affiliate marketer it is highly likely that you take the following steps when building a successful campaign:

1) You build a landing page to suck in as many leads as possible

2) You follow-up with these leads via a targeted email autoresponder campaign

3) You drive traffic to this new campaign

In a nutshell, you build a highly successful sales funnel, meant to sell a product or several related products, and you drive traffic to that funnel in a number of ways.

After building this successful sales funnel what happens if you don't seem to be getting any sales? You get plenty of leads coming in, which means your traffic is converting, but the sales seem non-existent. Why is this?

Well, the first thing I would do is check my email follow-up series. There must be something wrong with my email sales copy, or my links, or the way I am pre-selling the offer.

But what if you are getting a ton of clicks to your products but no sales? Is it the product itself that is the issue? This could be. You really cannot be 100% sure of the problem at this point, and you may never know. The product itself could be a dud.

Well, I have had many campaigns like this over the years and I usually would just let them go and move on. That was until I experienced a very successful campaign, which had a consistent sales conversion rate and everything working properly, just stop working. Not a little bit either. The sales went to ZERO, overnight.

I spent some time asking other affiliates about this and found out it was a pretty common problem. I also found out what that problem was and how to combat it too. It is unfortunate that many affiliates do not understand what is really going on with their commissions.

I'll try to explain a little of what could be happening to your sales in this article.

The most frustrating thing of all is that it is highly possible your sales funnels could be making a ton of sales and that you are just not getting credited with those sales. In other words, you are doing all of the work and someone else is getting your commissions. That doesn't sit well with me and should not sit well with you either.

The Problem: Affiliate Link Theft

Without getting too technical, here is what is happening.

Your affiliate ID is being changed to someone else's at the point of sale, either manually by the user, or via spyware on your computer which was placed there at some point while you were online. You could also be a victim of "cookie stuffing" which many affiliates do to try and protect their own commissions from link thieves.

The problem is that this "cookie stuffing" sometimes steals sales from others as well. These "cookie stuffing" affiliates are just trying to protect their own commissions but they don't realize they are becoming part of the problem.

Any of these things can stop you from receiving credit for the sale even though you're the one who should have made it. You cannot stop ALL commission thievery online, but to stop any of it at all you must implement affiliate cloaking into your campaigns.

Link cloaking is when you create a redirect, or a hidden frame redirect on your website that hides your affiliate ID's and makes it nearly impossible for spyware programs to tinker with your affiliate links at the point of sale.

If you start incorporating affiliate cloaking into your business today you can make a huge difference in your bottom line. It is very possible that you are losing 30-50% of the sales that should be yours. I certainly was.

So now that you know you need affiliate cloaking, lets look at the right and wrong ways to do it.

Choosing A Link Cloaking Service

There are tons of programs and software packages online claiming to be able to help you cloak your links. Many of them are offered for free even. I would not suggest that you go with the first one you find for many reasons. You need to make sure that the link cloaker you use has been created specifically for affiliate marketing and not for some "black hat" seo tricks.

There are not as many affiliate cloaking systems as their are seo cloaking and regular link cloaking software programs so you need to be careful what you choose.

Do NOT Use Free Cloaking Services

I understand that everyone is looking for a bargain these days, but when it comes to your affiliate commissions be willing to do what is best for your business. The most notable free link redirection and cloaking services online are those provided by companies like tinyurl.com, bit.ly, budurl.com and others.

These services started out as a way to shorten long URL's but have recenly been taking steps to supply affiliates with link cloaking too.

The problem with many of these services is that they don't work with every kind of affiliate link or program, and many times will actually hinder your ability to get visitors to your site!

The horror stories are too numerous of people who used redirection services such as TinyURL and Bit.ly and lost commissions. Many spammers use these services to try and cloak their links too, which results in many of these links not being accepted as viable URL's by spam filters and other email services.

It is in your best interest to not use these services at all.

The Best Link Cloaking Service

The best link cloaker is one that you can upload to your own servers so you don't have to worry about anything breaking down or not working properly.

This means you could create a separate website to house ALL of your cloaked links, or upload the cloaking script to each individual website you are promoting and create site specific links.

Depending on which way you want to go (I actually use both methods) it can be difficult to accomplish any of it if you are not a web programmer, or don't want to outsource the project to someone you are not sure you can trust.

With all of the different options available out there in regards to link cloaking it is very important to spend some time learning about the concept from an affiliate marketing standpoint. Once I got hooked up with the right cloaking systems my commissions doubled practically overnight for many of the products I was originally having trouble selling.

You can build inbound links by visiting blogs that are relevant to your chosen niche by leaving a comment on the blog. Make sure you read the articles that are posted on their blogs, so you can make a comment relevant to the article. Remember, without the proper keywords on your title/headline, the chances of you getting ranked high enough for people to find your website is slim to none.

Mistake #3: Missing Description. By always using descriptions on your blog posts allows for better rankings and click through. Be brief, but descriptive. Remember -- people scan quickly! If they can't find what they are looking for, in 2 seconds they are gone! Whether it is in your title or in the content, descriptions are key on having people find what they are looking for. For example, if your website is for a restaurant, you want pictures, a menu and maybe even some recipes for favorite dishes. CAPITALIZATION isn't not good for descriptions, especially in titles. Your description needs to be relevant.

Mistake #4: Simple Anchor Texts. You can have the best written article in the world, and if you don't have anchor texts that backlink to your website, then the article is not doing what you want it to do -- have people come to your site and buy whatever it is you are selling. This is probably the most common overlooked mistake. For example, if you are having people go to your landing page, and you simply have a click through or backlink that says "Click Here", it really isn't compelling. However, if it says something like "I Want Paul's Growing Formula To Success", it is more compelling and appealing for people to click through. Also, always make sure that you add backlinks to others websites or your websites.

Mistake #5: Title Tags. The title of your page or post that you want to rank is the single most important factor when it comes to on-page optimization. Take some time and put some thought into your title and keywords. For example, the title of this post is SEO Mistakes to Avoid. The first two words rank high in keywords that are being searched, in fact the whole title ranks high.

Nofollow and Noindex on Robots.txt and Meta Tags

I know a lot of you are wondering what's the difference between the “nofollow” and “noindex” in the robots.txt file and the ones declared on the meta tags. Some search engine optimization specialists claims that there's no difference while others believe that one method is less valuable than the other.

You can ask it out on several webmaster/SEO forums, but you'll just get mixed responses. In here, I will give you the REAL answer! According to Eric Enge's interview with Google's software engineer Matt Cutts way back in 2007, there are differences in using NoIndex, NoFollow, and Robots.txt.

In The Robots.txt File

Even if you restrict Google's spider from indexing certain pages of your website, they can still accumulate page rank. For example, if you disallow the crawling of your “About Us” page yet your homepage links to it, PR juice is still passed on.

In addition, websites that disallow crawling can still accumulate page rank and be visible in search results. Why? If another website links to it, PR juice will be passed on. Google can sometimes use the information of a website submitted to ODP (also known as DMOZ) in order to display it on their results page, or when another website links to it.

In The Meta Tag

Let's understand what Nofollow and Noindex really means.

The Nofollow is usually used on outgoing links, when declared in the meta tag, it means “do not follow all links on this page.” With this, you are also telling the spider not to pass PR juice. However, the nofollow on the meta tag also applies to your links that points to the other pages of your website. This also means that you are depriving the flow of PR juice to some of your pages.

On the other hand, the Noindex means, “do not index this page.” Pages with noindex can still accumulate page rank if a there's a dofollow link pointing to that page.

-- Dofollow is the opposite of Nofollow - a link with no “nofollow” attribute assigned means it's a dofollow link. A term used by webmasters and SEO experts.

To sum it all up:

* NoFollow means you're telling the search spider not to follow a link and also not to pass PR juice to that link.
* NoIndex means you're telling the search spider not to index your website and not to show it on SERP.
* The site or page in a Nofollow link can still gain PR if another site links to it without the nofollow attribute.
* Pages with the Noindex tag can still gain PR if another site links to it without a nofollow attribute.
* Pages with the Noindex tag can still be visible on SEPR using the information from ODP (DMOZ) or when another website links to it using
* Nofollow on the meta tag applies to all the links on a webpage
* Nofollow attribute on a link applies only to that link

So whether you use the Robots.txt or the Meta Tag, the results are still the same. The reason why Robots.txt is mostly used is because “it is the fundamental method of putting up an electronic no trespassing sign that people have used since 1996,” and it's much easier to declare which pages of your website not to crawl instead of placing the NoIndex code manually on individual pages' meta tags.

Commonly, SEO services do provide complete analysis of a website as well as recommendations. So whenever you are looking for a good search engine optimization service, never forget to ask for a website analysis first, don't just jump in and hire somebody you do not know.

There are 3 rules that you MUST follow to make your site a success.

1. Only target keywords that are receiving traffic

2. Only target keywords that have a commercial value.

3. Target keywords with a low enough competition.

These 3 rules may seem obvious, but it is because one or all of them are ignored that so many sites fail.

SEO is the art of getting traffic to your site by optimising the on page content and off page links to your site.

1. Keyword Research: Need to brainstorm exactly what your target market is typing into Google. All Search Engine Optimisation starts here. Good keyword research is a vital factor in SEO

2. Create a Local Business Listing. With this you should easily be able to get highly ranked for your business and your local area. (If you aren\'t running a conventional business with a specific geographical location, then this will not be necessary)

3. Link Building. Probably the most important part.

Create a large number of powerful backlinks to your site.

4. RSS feeds. The majority of websites, directories and blogs have RSS feeds. If they don\'t then they can be created. These need to be submitted to the top 40 or so feed directories. These feed directories themselves have feeds which can be submitted! Feeds only need to be submitted once and automatically update

Creating blogs, articles and feeds produces a large network of linking, gives your optimisation a backbone, then whenever content is added within the network the feeds are automatically updated. Google loves it.

5. Publish Press Releases. Each time you launch a new product or service, or just have an announcement then get it out as a press release. PR sites vary, some are free some you have to pay for but they are another great source of traffic and link juice.

6. Bookmark site pages, blogs and articles on the social bookmarking scene.

7. Utilise Twitter and Facebook to continue building reputation and customers. Twitter is just going to grow and grow, would be mad not to start using it properly right now. This can be automated to an extent.

8. If you aren\'t already doing this then start building a list (email list - customers and potential customers). Would be a good idea to have a monthly newsletter for your customers, another great way to maintain contact and create a long term relationship with your customers, as well as informing them of any news in your sector or company. This would have to be an \'opt-in\' list where the customers click a link to confirm they want to join the list. This eliminates any accusations of SPAM, and there will be an \'unsubscribe\' link with every message sent.

9. Then there are the on-page factors. This would include tweaking the content to optimise for a particular keyword. Employing \'nofollow\' tags in your pages to control the flow of page rank, for instance putting a \'nofollow\' tag on links to your T\'s and C\'s would stop any page rank flowing to this page, but would still allow customers to click on it and view it.

We can also manage all the content for you. Write articles, blogs, site content, newsletters....anything! You may wish to do this yourself, and that is good too!
