Para peneliti melibatkan 47 wanita untuk disuguhi empat puding vanila. Keempat puding itu memiliki jumlah lemak yang bebeda. Peserta diminta untuk memberikan penilaian kandungan krim, rasa manis, dan kenikmatan yang mereka rasakan ketika memakan puding.

Hasilnya, peneliti menemukan, wanita obesitas yang juga perokok menilai puding yang mereka makan memiliki kadar krim dan kemanisan lebih rendah dibandingkan nilai kelompok lain yang bukan perokok. Kelompok itu pun mengaku kurang terpuaskan dengan hidangan puding yang mereka makan dibanding kelompok lainnya.

Peneliti mengatakan, rokok memiliki hubungan dengan rasa manis. Kedua faktor, baik obesitas maupun merokok dapat mengurangi kemampuan indera pengecap untuk merasakan manis. Ini karena obesitas dan merokok dapat mengurangi kadar serotonin, senyawa otak yang mengontrol respon indera pengecap.

Tak hanya itu, menurut peneliti, meskipun tidak obesitas, perokok cenderung memiliki keinginan untuk makan makanan berlemak lebih sering daripada bukan perokok. Ini menjelaskan, kenapa perokok kebanyakan memiliki lingkar pinggang yang lebih besar daripada orang yang tidak merokok.
