How TV conquered Mangaldai and turned the people into zombies.

The year 1982 was an exciting one for Indian people. The radio and the newspapers were full of news of the Asian Games in New Delhi. Coins featuring Appu, the dancing elephant and mascot of the Games, and the Jantar Mantar in Delhi, about which many of us learnt for the first time, were already in circulation months before the opening ceremony. Newspapers told us that thousands of trees were felled in Delhi to broaden the streets, and that the price of tomatoes there was only INR 2 per kilogram due to the heavy influx of vegetables in preparation for the event. News of the construction of Appu Ghar, India’s first amusement park, got kids thrilled beyond belief.

1982 was also the year in which Doordarshan (DD), then the sole television broadcaster in India, started broadcasting its programmes nationally. And with this, television came to Guwahati, the state capital of Assam. The advent of television brought unbelievable excitement. For those with relatives in Guhawati affluent enough to afford a television set, it was customary to explain in great detail to the rest of us how a TV worked and how exciting it was to watch TV programmmes. Most of us developed an inferiority complex, and with extreme jealousy we cursed ourselves for living in such a small town where we were deprived of television’s wonders.

However, those days of agony were soon to be over. It was early 1984 when television first arrived at Mangaldai. As the relay-tower in Guwahati only had a range of about 25 kilometers, getting TV reception required an antenna stuck atop a long pole. In Mangaldai, on the periphery of that range, antennas had to be raised really high for the picture to be clear. Houses with an antenna came to be viewed with respect, as only a few houses had TVs in the beginning. Among our neighbours, the Konwar family – specifically one of the older brothers among the three or four Konwar brothers who all lived in adjacent compounds – got the first TV set.

Soon after the Konwars’ antenna went up, Pili proposed that we go over to watch TV the next day. I no longer remember if we skipped school altogether, or if we went to school and then escaped from there (ours was a government high school founded in 1903, and still had no boundary walls back then), but I vividly remember that it was a Thursday. It was the day of Brihaspati, the Guru of the Gods, and my mother did not cook any non-vegetarian dishes on that day, and even avoided using oil. Only the family cat dared to decline the food, as it still had some rights inside the house, whereas the rest of us – my father, my brother and I – had none. However, even the prospect of Thursday’s bland food could not dampen my spirits that day. And so Pili and I arrived at the Konwars’ drawing room, which was already filled with spectators, to watch the second day’s play of a cricket test match.

A note for the uninitiated: a test match was a six-day affair (five days of play and a day of rest in between) which would often end in a draw. It seemed that it wasn’t important to win a test match; just not losing was enough. It was common for a batting team facing defeat to try not to hit the ball or score at all, but rather just to draw things out and finish the game. The first 2-3 days would be particularly slow, but few things could be slower than Mohinder Amarnath and Sunil Gavaskar (or other combinations of Indian batsmen from that era, except perhaps Kris Srikkanth) batting together in total defensive mode. Watching them batting during a test match, the monotonous ‘thaak’ sound of them repeatedly stopping the ball with their bats would reverberate inside your head, and could even come back to haunt your dreams later.

But on that day we would have enjoyed even just watching a small bright spot on a dark TV screen. At one point, the TV lost its sound signal, but an enthusiastic spectator improvised a solution: watching the video on TV while listening to commentary on the radio. The result was quite fulfilling.

Then the proud family offered us tea. It required no small effort to make tea for a dozen guys, but the pride of having so many uninvited guests might have compensated for it. The pleasure of drinking tea while sitting on the floor in front of the TV (the sofa and the chairs were already occupied by older guys) lingered on in the room and in my mind. Time just flew and the evening (and the end of the day’s play) came too early. That night, in my dream and also out loud, I spoke to Sunil Gavaskar and others, earning me some ridicule from my father the next morning.

Memories of my melancholy ghosts

Soon more households got TVs, and not just black-and-white sets. The families of two of my classmates who lived nearby got colour TVs, and I spent most weekend evenings at one or the other house watching Hindi films, some of them good but most of them horrible (though I could not tell the difference back then).

Within a few years, my family got a TV set too. It was, despite my vehement protests, a black-and-white set, and not one that could display colour. My mother, who in her sporadic moments of lucidity debunked popular ‘facts’ such as that cooking on a gas stove led to gastric problems, or that using a pressure cooker led to high blood pressure, nevertheless whole-heartedly accepted the very ‘scientific’ fact that watching colour TV damaged one’s eyes. I often wondered if cost was the main factor in her decision to opt for a black-and-white set, but our cat, the only living being in the household who could have dared question my mother on this or any other issue, turned out to be totally disinterested in the TV, and thus that doubt was never raised or resolved.

TV changed our routine a bit. We postponed dinner until after the National news was read, first in Hindi and then in English, and then quickly returned to the TV to watch the serial at 9pm. Pitikaka, the neighbourhood drunkard, stuck to his old routine of returning home at half-past-nine shouting profanities and reciting his lyrical ballads, but now the sound of the TV submerged his voice. For those women who, totally besotted by TV, could not cook properly in the evenings for fear of missing some good programs, relief soon came in the form of regional programmes produced by the Guwahati Doordarshan Kendra (Television Centre). Most of those programmes were so boring that the moment they started, the women would stand up and move to the kitchen to prepare the evening meal.

The thing to do on Sunday

TV-owners’ initial enthusiasm and pride slowly diminished and eventually died out. The tea and snacks for anyone going to watch TV at a neighbour’s or friend’s home were replaced first by nonchalance, and then by obvious annoyance. During the pre-TV era, people often invited others over for lunch on Sundays or for an afternoon chat over tea. Most of our Sunday afternoons meant having guests over for a heavy lunch, listening to the radio, and then talking into the evening. However, as people got more and more hooked on TV, and the Sundays became packed with enjoyable TV programmes, the custom of inviting guests slowly died out. An unannounced guest on a Sunday – who would earlier invariably have been welcomed for a meal – now became a source of annoyance. Newspapers and columnists started to refer to Sunday (Deobar or Robibar in Assamese) as Tivibar (TVday). People wanted Sundays to themselves. No matter where they were, people tried to rush home in time to catch their favourite TV programmes. VCRs weren’t popular yet, and nobody wanted to miss a show.

The habit slowly spread to other days as well. Many weekday evenings had shows with Hindi movie songs, and most people wanted to watch these unhindered. This phenomenon of diminishing social contact continued and spread, especially as cricket broadcasts – whole-day affairs in those days – roped in ever more young people.

Still, TV did have some benefits. DD, the public broadcast channel, introduced us to Yasser Arafat and Nelson Mandela and Mobutu Sese Seko and Ahmad Shah Massoud – on that small screen, everyone was ‘physically’ in our homes. Prannoy Roy’s The World This Week introduced us to political events from across the globe. Almost a decade later, in a University Research Scholars’ hostel of some 300 people, I remained one of only 3 people who still waited for the current The World This Week episode every week.

Within a few years, DD started broadcasting a TV series based on the Ramayana. The series achieved unimaginable popularity, and some people even started worshipping the actors and actresses on the screen as personifications of the gods and demi-gods they depicted. The pious did not sit down to watch the Ramayana without first taking a proper shower and lighting incense-sticks. Once Ramayana came to an end, an adaptation of the Mahabharata kept the faith of TV devotees alive. Power failures during the show (broadcast from 9 to 10am on Sunday mornings, if I remember correctly) caused extreme frustration, and sometimes made even the noblest viewers curse like seasoned sailors.

Newspapers reported that this frustration took a violent turn in Lakhipur of Goalpara district in Assam. Frustrated with repeated power failures, the people of Lakhipur decided to solve the problem themselves, and went to the Office of the Electricity Board to demand an explanation. A heated exchange of words followed, and soon the Electricity Board’s office was ransacked and its employees beaten. After being told that only the Head Office at Goalpara could solve the problem, the irate public boarded a truck or two, went to the Electricity Board’s Goalpara office, and repeated the exercise. It was said that after this incident there were never any power cuts in the area during the Ramayana timeslot. People became so addicted to these two serials that, in the late 1980s, for the first time since its founding, Assam Engineering College rescheduled its entrance examination to begin an hour later so as to allow everyone to watch the series’ concluding episodes.

TV also taught most of us Hindi, or at least gave us a false confidence that we knew the language. My mother, for example, routinely claimed that the Hindi used in Ramayana and Mahabharata was very similar to Assamese, and she had no difficulty following the dialogues on screen. However, if coaxed into an attempt at translation, her words often conveyed very different, and sometime completely opposite, meaning to what was actually being said. Our next door neighbour Bhonti presented a different scenario. Though she hardly ever went to school and was not technology-savvy, somehow she always knew the TV schedule by heart. There was no chance of forgetting to watch a good programme so long as Bhonti was around. She even learned to read the clock for this purpose. Within a few years, she understood Hindi effortlessly.

You might have heard this of term for it floats around often, but do you know what it is, or how to safeguard yourself from it? Phishing, basically, is a scam devised to extract your passwords, your account numbers, your personal data etc. from you. The interesting part is the way they do it- to con you to reveal your information, cybercriminals forge websites or pose as legitimate sources that trick you. For instance, there have been cases when criminals have copied a site from top to bottom so that it looks and feels the same as the original. But it is just a copy through which the username and password that you enter immediately gets into their hands.

Cases of email phishing have been common, even in Nepal. Cybercriminals email you posing as bank officials, asking you to send them your e-banking passwords or pin numbers. Remember: banks never ask you to reply to them via mail, never ask you for passwords or pin numbers or even account numbers; if they appear to be doing so, call the bank, you might be getting duped. To stay safe from phishing sites, the first thing to do is to check the link. If the link begins with an ‘https’, the site is safe; but if it is just ‘http’, it is not secure. Almost all email clients have HTTP Secure (‘https’) and so do e-banking sites. Also, look for the symbol of a lock in the status bar in the bottom right of the browser. Finally, always copy-paste links to the address page because hyperlinks can take you anywhere, and even though the text might say ‘www.hotmail.com’ the hyperlink for it might be for any other website.

Cybercafe Safety

Many of us spend hours every day in cybercafés but forget about taking precautions. Key loggers (softwares that record each keystroke or letter typed into the keyboard) are the biggest threats at cybercafés. Anything that you type might be potentially read by the cybercriminal that might have installed this software. This might include your passwords, confidential emails, chat records-anything that you may have typed. Because it’s so well hidden, the safest thing to do might be to use the on-screen virtual keyboard (Start>Accessories>Accessibility) while typing your passwords. Anything typed there will not be recorded by the key logger. Another advice: always clear the browsing history from the browser and any cache stored once you are done. You don’t want your browsing history, your Facebook ID and other personal information in the wrong hands.

According to the Alexa Rankings, Facebookgets more hits in Nepal than Google, and with the hours many people spend each day, it is very essential to be cautious. Privacy settings are there for a reason, so use it. Allow access only to your friends. We’ve noticed that a lot of people have open profile-a big no-no. Also, limit your Facebook friends to those that you know and trust. Whatever you upload or update on Facebook, will be there to see, and download, for all your friends. If you’re one of those who accepts all friend requests, your photos and information might end up in the wrong hands. Remember, identity thieves and cybercriminals use every piece of information that they can gather against you to either con you or worse, steal your identity.

Finally, because Facebook does not use HTTP Secure, be very careful while using it in public WiFi hotspots. Anyone with a laptop, Mozilla Firefox and ‘Fire Sheep’, a free add-on can access your Facebook (and Twitter and any other webpage that requires a login without HTTP Secure) password if they’re in the same hotspot.

Public campaigns—on cyberspace, print media, television and radio—have spurred three of our political stalwarts to publicly pledge not to avail of some of the state perks. Pushpa Kamal Dahal (aka Prachanda), Ram Chandra Poudel and Madhav Kumar Nepal have all returned government-owned Pajeros. Will Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai make a public pledge not to take the Mustang with him when he gives way to another guy in that hot seat soon? We do not know yet. We will also have to wait for some time to know how the Supreme Court will decide on a public-litigation filed by some lawyers to annul the Cabinet decision that paved the way for the Bhattarai Cabinet’s perk distribution scheme. Supreme Court judges are among the largest chunk of beneficiaries of that Cabinet decision, but we have been told again and again that Chief Justice Khila Raj Sharma is a man of principles. Well, let’s see what principle he will uphold in this case. His own perk is at stake. If Baburam Bhattarai is mindful of public opinions and his own repeated pledge not to embezzle public funds, he should annul the earlier Cabinet decision. According to one estimate, this decision will cost Nepali state over 50 crores annually. That is, excluding the costs involved in providing their security.

At the same time, we should not forget that the top politicians are just a part of the story. Not long ago, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives spent 16 crores to produce a document that is largely useless when it comes to addressing the real needs of Nepali farmers. Ministry of Agriculture bureaucrats were party to this legalised loot. The Asian Development Bank provided most of the money, and the hiring of hundreds-of-dollars-per-day consultants constituted the bulk of the expenses. Ironically, there was nothing that local consultants could not do that the overpaid expatriates did in the process. We know that this is one of the many projects in which “technical-experts” are routinely brought in as part of the “package”. The locals are also hired to buy their silence. Tai chup, mai chup (you keep quiet, I keep quiet), as they say in Nepali. This kind of corruption continues in every government ministry that receives “donor” money.
When coalition governments are formed, the division of portfolio is based not on which ministry is the most crucial in providing public goods to the citizens. If it were, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Comen and Child Welfare, among others, would rank high. Yet that is not the case. During the last 22 years of non-monarchical rule, only once were serious attempts put in place to build a public health system. The then minister of health, Giriraj Mani Pokharel, deserves kudos, although what he and his team attempted to do has unravelled beyond recognition by now. That was an exception.
The division of portfolio is made in terms of which ministry mobilises more money and police force. The ministry that buys a lot of weapons, food and uniforms is ranked number one. I am talking about the Home Ministry. All the political parties want this because then they are ensured under-the-table perks. Recruitment of lower rung police is still done through personal orders of those in power. We do not have a public commission for police recruitment. Do we know how Nepal Army buys weapons?
It is routine practice for district offices to keep some journalists on regular “payroll”. Informed circles in Kathmandu know that Nepal’s most corrupt public corporations throw parties for journalists. Marketing departments in major media houses are constantly watchful of what gets published. They want to ensure that negative publicity for their major advertisers is tempered to a manageable level, if not altogether done away with.
Let’s get back to the government institutions. Government budgets are put to use in constructing roads and other infrastructure immediately before monsoon. Year-end is also a time of “bill-making”—to transfer leftover budgets among those in public offices. We see this every day in and around the places we live. We read this in our newspapers. The engineers, contractors and district haakims all have been involved in this grand collusion for a long time now.
Nepal’s bureaucrats know this full well. Let me thank some of the retired ones for sitting in relay hunger strike in Ratnapark this week. Many of those who are participating in the hunger strike administered some of the most corrupt institutions during their lifetimes of service. Perhaps they were not involved directly or they acted under duress. But I am sure they know how it all happens.
We definitely need to clean up politics. But we have to understand that politicians are not the only part of the story. It would have been much easier to clean up the mess if this were the case.

"Our Long Exile Starts"

The magnificent Second Temple went up in flames on the 9th of Av in the year 70 C.E. This started the long and arduous exile that the Jewish people are still mired in to this day. This picture depicts the Arch of Titus (yemach shmo v'zicharon), and in it Jewish slaves and precious Temple artifacts that were carried to rome, and can be found today underneath the vatican.

According to Josephus, a Roman soldier took a torch and threw it against the beautiful tapestries that Herod had made for the Temple and that hung along its walls. When they caught fire the Romans attempted to put it out, but there was not sufficient water. Somehow the fire was so intense that even the stone took hold and the building collapsed. The Talmud says that the Second Temple burned not only on the late afternoon of the ninth of Av, but the entire day of the tenth. It was just a raging conflagration.

They were unable to put out the fire and the entire Temple burned – along with thousands of Jews, according to Josephus. Many of the distraught defenders jumped into the flames, feeling that if the Temple was going up in flames then the Jewish people were going up in flames. In general, desperation and despair was so rampant that thousands and thousands of Jews committed suicide. This type of suicidal behavior is rare among the Jewish people, and indeed was performed mostly by the Zealots, not adherents of the Pharisees, who followed Rabbi Yochanon ben Zakkai’s lead and were not willing to associate the national death of the Jewish people with the end of the Jewish people.

May Hashem avenge the deaths of our fellow Jews, and may all those tortured souls throughout our history be granted an aliyah in Shamayim.

"The Burning of our Holy Talmud"

It's not just the physical elimination of the Jewish people that our enemies have sought for thousands of years, it's the spiritual extinction as well. Some of the most tragic episodes in Jewish history were the countless attempts of the xtian church to destroy all remnants of the Talmud, the basis for Jewish Law. There is no way the Torah can be understood without an Oral explanation to go along with it, which is why the Talmud is the backbone of Judaism (see the link below in the comments for further details).

The burning of the Talmud was repeatedly urged by the catholic popes. In France, Louis IX ordered further confiscations in 1247 and 1248 and upheld the principle in an ordinance of December 1254. It was confirmed by Philip III in 1284 and Philip IV in 1290 and 1299. A further burning was ordered in Toulouse in 1319 by the inquisitor Bernard Gui and in Perpignan. The conflagration in Paris was compared by the contemporary scholar Meir ben Baruch of Rothenberg to the destruction of the Temple in an elegy Sha'ali Serufah ("Ask is it well, O thou consumed in fire") included in the kinah of the Ninth of Av.

Leela Mani Poudyal appointed acting chief secy

Amidst strong resistance from the opposition party, the Cabinet meeting on Sunday appointed Leela Mani Poudyal as the new acting chief secretary. He would automatically become the chief secretary later.

According to Minister for Information and Communications Raj Kishor Yadav, the Cabinet meeting appointed Poudel as the acting chief secretary although the Madhesi leaders were against the nomination.

Poudel, who has been serving as the secretary at the Prime Minister’s office and Cabinet office, was appointed by PM Baburam Bhattarai.

Leaders of Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) had put forth the name of Shankar Koirala on the basis of seniority and Avanindra Kumar Shrestha, Uma Kanta Jha and Brinda Hada on the basis of inclusiveness.

“We had put forth the names to PM Bhattarai and he appointed the one who is close to him as it would be comfortable for them to work with each other,” said Yadav.

The tenure of current Chief Secretary Madhav Ghimire ends on August 6 after serving in the position for three years. Poudel would take over the post from the same date.

With the ruling partners reaching no where to consensus on the appointment, a meeting of the ruling coalition was convened this morning to discuss the same.
