Movie Review: The Maids Room (2014)

The Lowdown

Admittedly Micheal Walker's The Maids Room is a movie that wasnt on my radar or probably anyone else's for that matter. I decided to check it out as i had nothing better to do with my time. Was it worth it? Well yes and no. The Maids Room tells the story of a live in maid Drina who is left alone with a couples son brandon while they go away for a few days. One night Brandon gets into a drunken car accident and kills a man and stumbles into the house drunk and wakes up Drina. The parents come back and learn of the accident and learn that Drina knows more than she lets on, they try to buy her silence but Drina refuses.What will happen to Drina? will she turn Brandon in? Those are the questions viewers find themselves asking about a half hour into this flick. It feels just like every other thriller of the past 30 years up till that point, but then it throws you a real curveball and goes in a completely different direction that quite frankly shocked me and was very unexpected and made the movie better in my opinion. I will not ruin it for potential viewers but it is in intense ride from about the 45 minute mark. By far one of the most entertaining limited release movies ive seen in a while. My only gripe is that with such a great build up in the first half the ending does seem rather flat in comparison.

Final Verdict

A fine performance from Paula Garces as Drina the foreign maid who is about to find out just how far one family will go to keep a secret, a jarring and shocking transition at the halfway mark that may startle viewers and a solid overall package make this one highly recommended viewing. Its not going to set the world on fire but it is way better than it had any right to be, a solid overall thriller featuring a very pretty lead.

Movie Review: At The Devils Door (2014)

The Lowdown

Once every so often you watch a movie with low expectations and end up getting something much better than anticipated. At The Devils Door is one such movie. I went in expecting nothing and walked away with a huge smile because what i had just seen was pretty damn good.

In At The Devils Door writer and director Nicholas McCarthy charts familiar territory with an inventive flare as he tells us a tale about a young real estate agent named Leigh (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and her artist sister Vera (Naya Rivera) who get involved in a battle with supernatural forces.

Now the plot sounds like it could have come from just about any horror movie spanning the last decade. But what sets this movie apart is the love and care that has gone into each frame. Never content to deliver mediocre jump scares the movie takes its time building up likeable charecters and a story that builds on multiple levels so when the scares come they're actually pretty terrifying. The movie harkens back to simpler times in horror movies when what you dont see is just as scary as what you do see and the movie never reveals its antagonist for too long and the movie is all the better for it, we see girls flying round rooms and hear a chilling voice say "come to me" but only every now and then do we catch a glimpse of lucifer himself, and its usually shot in the shadows or in a window pane reflection. Call me crazy but its a lot creepier that way.

Final Verdict

Gushing atmopshere from the very first frame and lovingly shot in beautiful HD the movie is fantastic to look at. Naya Rivera carries the movie well and fans of hers will probably dig this performance. The movie itself is a slow burn and successfully builds the tension and the twists and turns come at all the right times. Perfect saturday night entertainment.

Movie Review : Mercenaries (2014)

The Lowdown

With the recent success of such ensemble movies as The Expendables and Fast and Furious 6 it was only natural that a female led action flick would come about. Most people assumed it would be the long in development "Expendabelles" movie that hollywood has been trying to put together, no sadly someone beat them to it. Asylum fills the void with their very own "chick flick" Mercenaries aka Prison Raid featuring such female action legends as Brigitte Nielsen, yeah you read that right Red Sonja is back baby. Sarcasm aside the cast is decent enough, starring stunt woman Zoe Bell, Terminator 3's Kristanna Loken and martial arts queen Cynthia Rothrock this had all the makings to be a decent action flick so does it deliver? Well not really seeing as this is an asylum movie, the CGI is terrible, the acting is wooden and the whole thing looks like it was shot on your next door neighbours camcorder but to be fair at times it is quite fun. The plot is thin as our female team infiltrate an enemy compound in order to rescue the presidents kidnapped daughter but the action is plentyful, its just a shame the shootouts are terrible, the hand to hand combat scenes however are much better and upto standard of what you would expect from this type of yarn.

Final Verdict

This type of movie was never going to win any awards so it should at least provide us with some kickass action but Mercenaries can barely even do that, the CGI blood and muzzle flashes are terrible and take you right out of the action and the choreography is bland to say the least, however the hand to hand combat scenes are competent so its not all bad, Zoe Bells martial arts skills are captured in stylish slow motion and look cool enough to make this straight to video trash watchable. Overall this movie falls short on what the trailer showed us, it looked like it was going to be a so bad its good kind of movie, instead we just got kind of a bad movie. The budget seems none existant, the cinematography is terrible and the action is mostly underwhelming. However the cast is great (i just wish Cynthia Rothrock got more screen time) and do the best with what they're given. Check this one out if you like any of the cast, or if you're B movie mad, just be expecting to laugh more than genuinely thrilled and you should be fine.

Could Terminator Genesis Save The Terminator Franchise?

Once upon a time Terminator was considered the creme dela creme of action franchises. Combining Sci Fi, Horror, Epic action, and enough human emotion to make a grown man cry, James Camerons The Terminator and its sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day blasted their way into pop culture and into the hearts of millions of action fans worldwide. Catchphrases such as Ill Be Back and Hasta la Vista baby are now recognised worldwide and Arnold Schwarzenegger is synonimous with the terminator character. But somewhere along the way legalities and bankrupcy got in the way causing James Cameron to jump ship and subsequently robbing us fans of any worthy follow ups to Camerons epic two films.

Now on the way we have Terminator Genesis, its not quite a remake and not quite a sequel so what is it? Frankly we dont know yet, BUT.. some sources are saying it will revisit key moments from Cameron's two movies and play out in somewhat Back to the future part II fashion with new and old mixing in some way. Maybe they create a new timeline by altering events we all know and love? Who knows. But if done right this could be a return to form for the fallen franchise. A complex big loud summer blockbuster. Bring it on. After all Terminator has felt rather dumbed down since Cameron left. It would be nice to see it return to form and bring us a mind bending plot combined with the big spectacular action this franchise is known for.

Terminator Genesis is out in the uk in June 2015, so a long wait, but it just might be worth it.

Movie Review: Machete Kills (2013)

THE LOWDOWN

Starting life as a mock trailer the original Machete provided Danny Trejo with a badass action hero to call his own. And it seems that Danny and director Robert Rodriguez were just warming up beacuse Machete is back to kick more ass and once again save the day in this fun action packed sequel.

Yet again featuring an all star cast Machete Kills ups the ante considerably in true sequel style by recruiting the likes of Sofia Vegara, Lady Gaga, Charlie Sheen, Antonio Banderas, Cuba Gooding Jr and Mel Gibson to name a few and lets just put it this way, the cast does not disappoint, each celeb gets to ham it up. Sofia Vegara in paticular seems to enjoy parading around with machine guns for breasts and generally playing an over the top female badass, Mel Gibson is an unstopable supervillain and Charlie Sheen is the womanizing President of the United States. Also male viewers take note, theres lots of eye candy on offer here, attractive women fill nearly every frame of this movie, if you're in the mood for hot babes kicking ass, give this movie a try.

The plot is simple and the action is frequent, whats makes Machete Kills so watchable is its senseless and often times comical violence featuring Machete dispatching hordes of bad guys in inventive ways, some that wouldnt seem out of place in a Friday The 13th movie, Machete wipes out waves of enemies with a whole host of weapons, my personal fav being the inside out gun which turns people - you guessed it - inside out and leaves them as a huge pile of guts on the floor. Pretty cool if you ask me. Machete kills is action packed, its got supervillains, prostitute assasins and shapeshifting hitmen, but if you're looking for substance your watching the wrong movie.

Machete Kills ends showing us glimpses of whats to come next, Machete Kills in space, and if you ask us that looks like its going to be a hell of a good time, but given the film bomed at the box office who knows if we will see Machete in another outing, which is a shame as this is a great tongue in cheek action series and i would be sad to see it end here when the film makers are only just getting warmed up.

FINAL VERDICT

Babes, guns and buckets of blood. What more does a grown man need on a friday night?

Movie Review: Knights Of Badassdom (2014)

The Lowdown

Lets be honest here, in recent years the horror genre has grown stale. Year after year we are subjected to the same old generic PG-13 supernatural shlock. Gone are the days when horror was marketed at adults and kept away from children at all costs, only to be seen by a select few who dared raid their parents video collection. Horror nowadays its targeted towards young teens and is geared towards making the studio a nice big profit rather than actually providing any scares. Such is the movie business. So its nice when a film comes along thats R rated, funny and actually tries to do something fairly unique.

Joe Lynchs Knights Of Badassdom tells the tale of three best friends who take part in a live action role playing game only to find themselves fighting for their lives against an evil succubus from hell.

The film is fairly lighthearted but consistantly violent and gory and clearly takes inspiration from the likes of Army Of Darkness and Hatchet, which is no bad thing as the Horror Comedy genre has a huge fan base which will likely lap this up. Ryan Kwanten does a good job in the lead, playing Joe, a heavy metal loving loveable loser who suprisingly bags a hell of a lot of hot chicks, including Summer Glau, who is perhaps best known for her roles in the ill fated FireFly and Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Its Nice to see Glau in a movie again, especially one thats as quirky and fun as this.

The thing that impressed me the most and made me realize films like this are a rare treat, is the fact that the production team decided to go the traditional route and rely on a lot of practical effects. Theres just something about practical effects that i love, maybe its growing up with all those wonderful horror movies in the 80s or maybe its that they look a hell of a lot more convincing than Cgi when done right, whatever it is Knights Of Badassdom hits all the right notes when we get to see the succubus in its final form, its all constumes and practical effects and it looks glorious. Fans of 80s horror in particular will get a kick out of it, more modern day horror films could learn a thing or two from this, as the effects and costume design really are great.

Final Verdict

A fantastic cast, banging heavy metal soundtrack, unique plot and awesome throwback practical creature designs make this one a must see for horror fans who grew up on 80s comedy horror.

Movie Review: Among Friends (2012)

The Lowdown:

After debuting on the festival circuit last year, scream queen Danielle Harris's directorial debut finally gets a general release on DVD and VOD and its a hell of a lot more fun than it has any right to be.

Among Friends tells the story of a group of friends who get together for an 80s themed murder mystery party that quickly turns sour when they are each tortured and forced to pay for the secrets they keep. The concept is hardly original but its executed with playfulness and a solid degree of tension in which the audience never quite knows whats going to happen next, making it a thrillingly exciting watch the first time around.

Sadly though the cinematography does leave a lot to be desired, it just screams straight to video from the get go, not that that's a bad thing by any means, the concept and execution are all great and the movies a hell of a roller coaster ride, so its a shame the overall look of the film dosent look more cinematic and grand as i feel this could have at least made a great cult classic in the years to come, but the vast majority of people will sadly dismiss this as B movie trash now which is a shame, but dont let the overall look fool you, this is a smart and fun little throwback to 80s horror.

Also worthy mentioning is one scene in particular that fans of Danielle Harris will get a kick out of in which a Dinner guest tripping on mushrooms thinks she's on a movie set and spots Ms Harris in the clown costume she donned in Halloween 4. Its a nice little tip of the hat from Danielle to her long time fans

Final Verdict

Although not breaking any new ground or offering anything unique into the DTV horror genre. Among Friends offers just enough thrills and gore to be worthy of a rental.

Batman VS The Terminator

Being a huge fan of Batman and The Terminator i regularly scour the web looking for news on two of my favorite franchises. Well today i came across something very cool indeed, a Trailer for an animated short film Batman Vs The Terminator by Mitchell Hammond which will be out later this year. You can watch the video below, it looks pretty cool if you ask me.

It looks like the short film accurately captures the post apocalyptic brilliance we saw snippets of in the first two terminator movies and throwing batman into the midst of judgment day is a really great concept, im looking forward to seeing how this plays out when the full thing is released. The score by noir deco also sounds fantastic, capturing the pulsating beat and emotions that made Brad Fiedel's two terminator scores iconic. With an 80s anime feel, a pulsating soundtrack and two iconic characters be sure to check back for news on this one as we learn more.

Could Ryan Gosling Be The New Batman?

The dust hasn't even settled yet on the news that Batman is set to make an appearance in the new Superman movie due in theaters sometime in 2015, and already the internet is in a frenzy with casting speculations galore. Of all the actors rumored to be in the running to play the Dark Knight perhaps the most interesting choice is none other than Mr cool himself Ryan Gosling.

Perhaps best known for his portrayal as "Noah" in the overly sappy The Notebook, Gosling has been making the transition from pretty boy to on-screen bad ass for quite sometime now, and his latest film Only God Forgives looks to solidify that transition. The question however still remains, would audiences and comic book fans be willing to accept Gosling in the role? He certainly has the charm and charisma to pull off the Bruce Wayne side of things, as for Batman, that remains to be seen. For now we all just have to wait and see who is actually cast, no doubt about it though, after Christian Bale's stellar performance in the Dark Knight trilogy the next Batman has mighty big shoes to fill.

5. A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989)

Many people may disagree with this entry making the list but to hell with those people. A Nightmare On Elm Street 5 is a dark, Gothic, fun little 80s flick. Sure the premise of using Alice's unborn baby's dreams is a bit far fetched, but so is the concept of having a murderer kill you in your sleep. Ive always enjoyed this one and I'm sure somewhere some fan out there shares my perspective. The visuals are top notch, and it plays as sort of an origin story for Freddy at times. Not the best sequel, but a whole lot better than 2010s remake that's for sure

4. A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge : (1985)

After the success of the Original, New Line Cinema, wasted no time in continuing the on-screen adventures of everyone's favorite dream stalker, released just a year after its predecessor Part 2 was another huge success for New Line. Part haunted house tale, part body possession story, Nightmare 2 takes a very different turn than that of the original. Infamous for its Homo erotic subtext its is perhaps one of the most interesting movies in the franchise and provides a lot of replay value on that basis alone. Also worthy of noting is how cool Freddy's make up is this time around, its dark, ugly and possibly the scariest hes ever looked on film. This one certainly stands out, if not for all the wrong reasons. Great viewing either way.

3. A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)

A Nightmare On Elm Street 4 was the highest grossing movie in the franchise until 2003 when Freddy Vs Jason knocked it off its throne. Its easy to see why. Its a lighthearted affair as Kruger is portrayed more as prankster and clown than any actual threat. It has a high camp value, some very creative deaths, most notable being a teenager being transformed very slowly and painfully into a bug and squashed, which is more than likely a nod to Cronnenbergs "The Fly", and a martial arts showdown between Freddy and a Karateka teen, the movie really goes all out in its creativeness. If all the Hi-jinks sound obsurd, thats because they are, but the movie is a blast from start to finish as I'm sure most fans would agree. And i can guarantee you will be quoting "hows this for a wet dream?" to Friends and Family for months after viewing this.

2. Wes Cravens New Nightmare: (1994)

By the time the 1990s rolled around Freddy Kruger had become a Caricature of his former self. With each new entry into the franchise growing more cartoon-ish as time went by, the series was in dire need of an overhaul. Fans prayers were answered and then some, as Wes Craven was announced to be directing the then titled A Nightmare on Elm Street 7: The Ascension. Wes was no longer content with what Kruger had become and set out to make him darker and scarier than ever. The idea of having this film be "real life" and all previous nightmare movies be just that, - movies, is nothing short of genius and elevates this above and beyond many of the mediocre entries into the franchise. Freddy was finally scary again and ready to terrify a whole new generation. New Nightmare definitely deserves its place at number 2 on our list and is perhaps the most original film since the very first.

1. A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 : Dream Warriors (1987)

After going in a different direction In ANOES 2 producers decided it was time to tread a more familiar path for the third outing. Featuring the return of Nancy Thompson this is the sequel fans had wanted the first time around, all the familiar elements are there, Freddy once again kills you in your dreams, there are fine performances from a terrific young cast and just enough humor to set Kruger apart from his other silver screen rivals Micheal and Jason. The story centers around a group of teens in a psychiatric ward all being terrorized by our favorite dream stalker, eventually they all learn how to harness power in their dreams and set out stop Kruger once and for all. I have to hand it to the film makers this is a really well produced film it grips you from start to finish and had the original films been a trilogy, this would have been the perfect ending, a perfect mix of horror and comedy but still scary enough to provide the thrills. A nightmare On Elm Street 3 tops our list and comes highly recommended. "Welcome to prime time bitch"

Halloween Sequels : The Top 5

With John Carpenters immortal classic Halloween celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, we thought what better way to celebrate than to check out the other, often over looked films in the long running franchise and bring you our definitive list on the top 5 best. Lets get started!

5. H2: Halloween 2 (2009)

Featuring a maskless Micheal Myers and David Lynch-esque visuals, Rob Zombies Halloween 2 is a very different beast from its predecessors. Essentially a story about Laurie Strode's descent into madness after encountering Myers one year prior, the artsy visuals and graphic violence make this entry into the franchise stand out for better or for worse, you decide which.

4. Halloween H20 (1998)

Twenty years after the original Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis had the idea of getting together the original cast and crew for a new Halloween film. Director John Carpenter was on board until his hefty fee of 10 million dollars to direct was rejected leaving Friday the 13th II and III director Steve Miner to take over directorial duties. Ignoring Halloween's 4 to 6, H20 picks up after the events of 1981's Halloween II introducing us to Laurie Strode who is now the mother of a 17 year old boy John, and a cast of whole new fresh faces ready to be picked off by the boogeyman one by one.

H20 is an effective enough sequel and serves well when viewed back to back with the original two,

my only complaints are the four different mask's used during the production vary greatly in quality and accuracy and also the original musical score was altered and substituted with music from Scream. A bad choice, if you ask me as the music is an important key factor in creating the atmosphere for a Halloween flick. Nonetheless this is a fine sequel and certainly one of the less confusing ones.

3. Halloween 4 (1988)

After mixed reactions to the Myer-less Halloween III, Moustapha Akkad decided it was time to take the franchise back to its basic elements, that being babysitters, mayhem and the indestructible Micheal Myers himself. With Jamie Lee Curtis not reprising her role as Laurie Strode and John Carpenter yet again not directing, the writers took this one in a new direction. Featuring Danielle Harris as Micheal's niece and Donald Pleasence as Dr Loomis, Moustapha Akkad paid close attention to the elements that went into this one and it shows. Generally considered a fan favorite Halloween 4 is essentially Halloween brought into the eighties decade, featuring more gore, a super strong Myers and terrific atmosphere throughout, its easy to see why this one ranks so high on many fans lists. Danielle Harris is terrific, as is her Jamie Lloyd character, its just a shame how things ended for her in Halloween : The Curse Of Micheal Myers. This one comes highly recommended.

2. Halloween III: Season of the witch (1982)

Undoubtedly some readers will disagree with this one taking the number two spot on our list, but quite frankly i dont give a damn. Producers John Carpenter and Debra Hill wanted to take Halloween in a different direction after Halloween II and start making stand alone movies set on or related to halloween using the Halloween moniker. This is the first and only movie we got using that concept. Rejected by fans at the time who wanted to see more Myers, Halloween III tells the story of a Halloween mask company and its intent to kill innocent children using Halloween masks. The movie has terrific atmosphere much like the first two installments in the franchise and John Carpenter and Alan Howarth's score is equally as atmospheric. For people not afraid of change Halloween III is a strong sequel and will perhaps one day gain the love it so rightfully deserves.

1. Halloween II (1981)

The tagline "More of the night he came home" sums up Halloween II in a nutshell. A direct continuation of the original Halloween, Halloween II picks up immediately after its predecessor with Dr Loomis still hot on Micheal Myers trail and Laurie Strode being transported to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital for treatment on her injuries sustained in the first film. Halloween II is effective at continuing the storyline as well as keeping with the tone and aesthetics of the original. The Hospital setting works in the films favor and it is at times genuinely creepy, dark hallways and sparse staff make Haddonfield Memorial a very effective setting. This film also ups the ante on gore as Friday the 13th had just taken off and a little more of the red stuff was deemed necessary in order to appease audiences growing blood lust. Halloween II is essential viewing for fans of the original as it perfectly recaptures the atmosphere of the original and succesfully continues the story adding new twist and turns to the Halloween Mythos along the way. It also makes for great back to back viewing with the original, so have yourself a double feature this Halloween night!!

Its been a busy year for Screen favorite Danielle Harris, with a handful of movies still set for release sometime in the near future, Fatal Call A.K.A Call Me On Tuesday, marks a departure from her usual "scream queen" fare, one that is sure to both surprise and delight many a fan, as Danielle lights up the screen as the seductive but conniving Amy Hannison.

Jason London stars as Mitch, a smalltown guy who's affair with a beautiful woman has disastrous consequences as he fights for his life and to clear his name. The plot reads simple enough on paper, but there are terrific twist and turns as the film progresses that are played out and executed effectively, taking this from Z grade Thriller, to a pretty fun and engaging B movie.

I was both surprised and delighted by the casting decisions, not only do we get great perfomances from Danielle Harris and Veteran Jason London, but Kevin Sorbo of "Hercules" fame is along for the ride, as well as Scary Movies, Lochlyn Munro, this isnt your typical B movie no name cast and the film is all the better for it.

The writing and directing for the most part is really well done and director/writer Jack Snyder does a great job of capturing the tone of early 90s erotic thrillers, as the movie at times feels like a throwback to the days of Shannon Tweed thrillers albeit with a lot less sex and more emphasis on the storyline.

The only minor complaint i have is towards the middle of the movie it starts to drag on a little, but that is quickly rectified with a fantastically tense sequence featuring Jason London's character Mitch sneaking into Amy's house to acquire some evidence to clear his name. Its a well written and directed sequence that perfectly and effectively notches up the tension and will have viewers hanging on the edge of their seats.

Final Verdict

For fans of Femme Fatale films and Steamy late night cable thrillers, Fatal Call is neither anything fresh nor groundbreaking. But that said, it does provide a handful of tense thrills, a standout being the nightclub chase and car park showdown, an engaging storyline with plenty of twists and turns to keep even the most jaded movie goer satisfied, and great performances from Kevin Sorbo, Jason London and the ever beautiful Danielle Harris, who shows terrific range and sexuality, we dont usually get to see from her. Fatal Call is the perfect movie for a Friday night when all you want to do is put your feet up and relax.

Rating

An unusual acting turn for Danielle Harris, solid directing and writing earn this a 3 out of 5.

Its worth checking out and despite its DTV movie production values, is an engaging treat from start to finish.

VHS Nostalgia #1 - VHS Hunting

Ahhhhhh!!

I'm the kind of person who likes to reflect on the past. Quite often i find myself in my own head pondering over days gone by and how quick life seems to pass us by. One fond memory i always seem to come back to time and time again is an era long since past, the era of the VHS. Now don't get me wrong the technological era we live in now is great, id never be without the internet, my Blu Ray player or HDTV now, but part of me still longs for a simpler more exciting time. Maybes its all rose tinted spectacles and nostalgia, but part of me still longs for a time when everything wasn't so readily available, a time when you actually had to leave the comfort of your own home to purchase your favorite movies - i know!! Shocking right? There was nothing quite like the feeling of browsing around an old jumble sale or a video store and not knowing what B movie classic you were going to unearth next. I myself discovered some of my most beloved films that way, i remember it well.

I was ten years old and my mom and aunt had dragged me to a huge jumble sale, i was pretty bummed out having found nothing all day, we only had a little stretch of stalls left, then i saw it,

the coolest thing id ever seen. What id found was the Friday the 13th VHS and me and my cousins had a blast that afternoon watching it. I remember feeling a sense of accomplishment after scouring this huge jumble sale and coming away with a film that turned out to be awesome, and in some ways has changed my life for the better.

I just dont get the same satisfaction with ordering a film off the internet or streaming it on Netflix, there was something about the journey, the smells in the air, the browsing of random VHS artwork in the video store, the hunting through Mom and Pops for rare B movie classics when more often than not, the covers themselves would be more entertaining than the actual film.

Don't get me wrong i also love the instant gratification era we live in, one click and a movie turns up at your doorstep or on your screen from the comfort of your home, but part of me wants to feel that journey one more time, to stare in awe at the wonderful VHS artwork, it truly was a honor to have experienced this magical era.

Who's that ugly guy..oh wait, its me!!

Once upon a time super hero films were considered a box office risk with only a handful being made every couple of years. Days gone by were not very kind to comic book fans, Thankfully the times have changed. 5. Blade (1998)

Marvels first success at the Box Office was with 1998s Blade. Featuring a pounding soundtrack and some of the best action ever committed to celluloid its easy to see why this was a bona fide hit.

Wesley Snipes plays Blade, a human-vampire hybrid who is hunting vampires after the death of his mother. This is not your typical Marvel film, its violent, loud, and bloody. Blade comes highly recommended for fans of both vampires and superheroes.

4. Superman (1978)

Forget Man Of Steel for a moment, for the longest time this was the definitive Superman movie and in my eyes it still is. Made long before the cgi era Superman is a tour de force in pre cgi visual effects. It even won a special award for its visual effects, its that good.

Superman was and remains a fantastic success in film making. Its easy to see why it was Warner Bros highest grossing film at the time. Do yourself a favor and check out the best origin story of one of the worlds best loved Superheroes. Is it a bird? is it a plane? No its Superman!!

3. X-Men (2000)

If Blade got the ball rolling for Marvel then 2000s X-Men knocked that ball into the stratosphere. Starting out life in the early 90s as possible James Cameron project and was scrapped until further developments were made in 1996. Released in 2000 X-Men paved the way for the slew of superhero films we now see released regularly, featuring dazzling special effects and a detailed plot, superheros have come a long way on the big screen. Be sure to check this one out to see where the 2000s superhero boom started. Upon release X-Men was the ninth highest-grossing film of 2000.

2. The Avengers (2012)

Depending on your personal preference in Superheroes, this next entry may well be your favorite.

2012s The Avengers is an absolute behemoth in the Comic Book genre. It was a Box Office juggernaut when released in May 2012 crushing all competition bar none. State of the art cgi, an assemble of marvels greatest heroes, and more destruction than a Micheal Bay movie, The Avengers is the elite in Comic Book action. The upcoming sequel is sure to be just as worthwhile.

1. The Dark Knight (2008)

2008s The Dark Knight is a Genre Bending masterpiece. And is generally considered the greatest comic book film of all time. But its much more than a superhero film. Its themes are vast and deep. Playing more like a tragic play and a crime thriller than an average camp superhero romp, this is the mac daddy of the superhero genre. I cannot recommend this film enough. Featuring one of the greatest villains of all time, Heath Ledgers Joker, this film will no doubt remain at the top for years to come. Fantastic character development, a fantastic villain and explosive action make this a must see.

Evil Dead (2013) Mini Review

Here at WildCinema we love a good horror film. We love Evil Dead. So this pickup is a no brainer really. Ill cut to the chase, we live in the era of the reboot at the moment, Hollywood is churning out remake after remake of all our favorite movies, and lets be honest, most remakes suck the big one. Uninspired PG-13 drivel for the most part i know. But my friends Evil Dead is here to restore your faith in remakes somewhat, because it rocks!!

Internet trolls are divided on this film as it dosent feature the infamous Ash from the original trilogy. But dont let that put you off, this is a rip roaring good time, and quite possibly one of the best remakes ever. Featuring realistic practical effects over cgi, violence hasn't looked so brutal in a long time.

I'm going to keep this review short, this movie lived up to my expectations, fans of the original three should check this out as it is a really well done remake, and people who want a perfectly executed R-rated scare should also check this out. Not for the faint hearted mind you!!

Movie Review: Texas Chainsaw (2013)

The Lowdown:

Billed as a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's terrifying 1974 orginal, Texas Chainsaw had pretty big shoes to fill to say the least. Does it deliever. In short, no.

Alexandra Daddario plays Heather Miller the last of the Sawyer blood line, who inherits the family home. Heather and her friends head up there to check the place out, little do they know our buddy leatherface still lives there and is ready to pick them off one by one.

What should be an absolute riot turns out to be a badly directed, poorly written mess of a film. Riddled with contradictions that make it inconsistent with the original to say the least, Texas chainsaw feels like it was put together to make a quick buck, and it shows.

The film also misses opportunities to go bat shit crazy and give us the bloodiest TCM yet. Take for example the sequence where Leatherface pursues Heather through a carnival, this was a brilliant oppurtunity to have Leatherface rack up a serious body count killing everyone who gets in his path, but instead the filmmakers chickened out, i guess mediocrity is in this season.

The one thing the film has going for it is eye candy. Its looks great and there are some nice looking ladies in the form of Alexandra Daddario and Tania Raymonde. Raymonde being the hottest in my humble opinion, sorry Daddario fans. Anyways the film is nice to look at, but little else.

This was a great opportunity to bring back Leatherface and bring him into this decade, bigger, bloodier and nastier. But sadly it just dosen't deliver.

Final Verdict:

Lousy writing, lousy direction, and a "twist" ending that hasn't been fresh since Halloween 4, this one is a stinker. See it, if only for the sight of Tania Raymonde and Alexandra Daddario, because everything else stinks

Rating:

This is a low blow for fans of the original. For a real sequel to the original check out the underrated Texas chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) its leaps and bounds better than anything here. 1 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review: Foxy Brown (1974)

Starring: Pam Grier, Terry Carter. Peter Brown

The Lowdown:

Originally intended to be a sequel to 73's "Coffy" Foxy Brown features more action, sex, and 70s goodness from blaxploitation Icon Pam Grier. Foxy sets out on a path of vengeance against those who murdered her boyfriend.

Featuring lesbian bar fights, men getting chopped up by plane propellers and once again Pam Griers best asset - her naked breasts, this is a blast from start to finish. My only complaint is at times its feels a little slow, and although never boring it would have been nice to see the action paced out a little better.

Pam Grier's performance is pretty solid as the badass action heroine Foxy and she brings a physical presence to the role like no other female at the time could, paving the way for future action heroines such as Sigourney Weaver in Aliens, and Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2 this is pretty much the birth of the kick ass leading lady, something we now take for granted.

Sadly after a couple movies Pam all but fizzled out and took a back seat, and played more supporting roles until Tarantino Cast her In 1997s Jackie Brown, which is a shame as i would have loved a whole bunch of violent 70s and 80s actioners from Ms Grier. But her work in this and "Coffy" have truly cemented her as an Icon of 70s action cinema, and nobody can take that away from her.

While not quite as good as "Coffy" Foxy Brown is a fantastic way to spend an evening. Brimming with 70s swagger, Gratuitous Violence and a Finale that would make Dirty Harry proud, Foxy Brown is hard hitting entertainment from a fantastic era.

Final Verdict:

Boobs, blood and a pickle jar filled with a mans floating member make this classic worthy of revisiting. Witness the rise of the action heroine and marvel at the beauty of Ms Grier. Foxy Brown Still delivers the goods in 2013. You would be foolish to have not seen this cult classic.

Rating:

Nothing less than a solid 4 out of 5 for this vintage classic.

The Lowdown:

Lets face it, in 2013 we all know the catchphrases, we all know the name, but surprisingly there are still people out there unfamiliar with the Dirty Harry films.If you are one of those people then this is the place to start,Harry Callahan's first outing still stands up after all these years. A tense action thriller that set up every hard boiled cop movie cliche you can think of and launched a wave of imitators in the process.

In his first outing Callahan plays cat and mouse with a psychotic killer and finds himself challenging his beliefs in the law he desperately tries to uphold. Featuring violent shootouts, breathtaking scenery, and a truly superb villain this is one cop flick fans of the genre shouldn't miss. Clint Eastwood was practically born to play this type of hard boiled cop and it shows as he oozes bad-ass-ness and lights up the screen whenever he is on. Audiences agree as Clint was back to play Harry 4 more times after this one. But it is this first flick which is perhaps the most iconic.

Final Verdict:

Bad ass catchphrases, big bad handguns and an unmatchable bad ass attitude Dirty Harry is an icon of American Cinema. Everybody should make my day and check out this fine slice of entertainment.

The Lowdown:

Lets travel back to the 70s for a minute. Forget Cgi, lets embrace real down and dirty film-making for a second. And films dont come anymore down and dirty than Coffy. An incredible mixture of sex, violence and gratuitous nudity, Coffy is one hell of a fun ride.

Pam Grier plays Coffy, a nurse by day, vigilante sex pot by night, seeking vengeance against drug dealers for getting her sister hooked on heroin. That's basically the plot minus a few twists and turns here and there.

What makes this film so great is the sum of all its parts. Pam Grier is incredible to look at, even if her acting is a little bit wooden, we can overlook it as she has one hell of a screen presence..and possibly one of the best racks of all time, she is pure badass as Coffy. The soundtrack is funky and sleazy and really gets you in that 70s mood. And did i mention Coffy features one of the best death scenes of the 70s? RoboCop's Robert DoQui gets tied to the back of a car and gets taken for one hell of a ride, resulting in, you guessed it, his bloody demise. That's worth seeing the movie for but, there's more! "Coffy" features possibly the best fight scene of all time. Coffy gets into a brawl with a room full of hookers and throws them around while also ripping open their shirts to reveal their big floppy breasts! Fantastic!

There's so much to love about this little gem id hardly fit it all into a digestible review. This is a great piece of 70s kitsch that any film fan should check out. You wont be disappointed!

Final Verdict:

Featuring Nudity, Violence, Pam Griers breasts and a rocking 70s soundtrack Coffy is a rip roaring 70s flick that everyone should see. Buy it, Rent it or steal it, Just watch it.

Exploitation doesn't come any better than this 4 out of 5 stars for this classic.

The Lowdown:

With a name like Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters you might be forgiven for thinking you stumbled upon some lost 80s b movie classic. Sadly thats not the case. But whats presented here is a nice enough combination of guns, horror and female eye candy to entertain any man on a friday night.

The plot is paper thin and the action vfx heavy and frequent. But if that's how you like your entertainment you're in for a treat, the film follows Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) as they hunt a big bad witch who holds the key to their past.

The action is quite bloody, to be honest i wasnt expecting much gore as films are pretty tame these days, but Hansel and Gretel goes all out. Exploding heads, severed limbs and buckets of the red stuff, this isnt the Fairy tale we all heard growing up. This is that fairy tale on steroids. And at times its a lot of fun.

Gemma Arterton stood out initially to me. She could have a career playing kick ass action heroines clad in tight leather if she so wished after this and i dont think anyone would complain.

Overall this is a feast for the eyes, VFX and witch design are fantastic, action is first rate. Its worth a look.

Final Verdict:

Boasting impressive visual effects and eye candy Hansel and Gretel is a fun way kill 2 hours.

Rating:

Gemma Arterton in tight clothing earns this a 2.5 out of five.

The future of The Terminator Franchise.

The Terminator Franchise : The future

The Terminator has always been near and dear to me. Seeing the first two films at a young age clearly shaped my love for well written genre bending sci fi, and to this day the first two installments remain two of my favorite films.

Its after the first two installments where things took a nose dive quality wise. 2003's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was for most fans a disappointment. Gone is the James Cameron magic. Gone is Brad Fidel's haunting score. What we got was a pale imitation of a Terminator film that left a sour taste in everyone's mouth.

Terminator Salvation in 2009 seemed like it could be the film we had all be waiting for since 1984. A film that would show us the dark future of the previous three entries. But what we got barely resembled a Terminator flick. And with that, I and every other Terminator fan lost all hope.

Now in 2013 T5 is a certainty. Scheduled to start shooting in early 2014 what can we really expect?

Can we really expect anything as good as, or dare i say it better than James Cameron's own sequel Terminator 2:Judgment Day? Highly unlikely.

However we can all hope for a quality Terminator film. One that brings the series back from the brink. I guess we will all just have to hold our breath until more details are announced.

For now im just going to assume Hollywood will do us Terminator fans right and give us the dark gritty future war movie we all want and so desperately need.But with Schwarzenegger signing on who knows what angle this new film will take.Hopefully the right one.

We need L.A. 2029 and we need it now. Whose with me?

The Lowdown :

What some might consider Straight to DVD schlock-fest we at wild cinema consider highly anticipated sequel. 2010's slasher throwback Hatchet II left us all wanting more. Was Victor Crowley dead? Would Danielle Harris ever show us what we all really want to see...her sweet little naked body? Thankfully Hatchet III answers those questions and more.Literally following on from the last frame of its predecessor Hatchet III wastes no time in spilling the red stuff, in the first 5 minutes horror veteran Danielle Harris is covered head to toe in the blood of Victor Crowley who is dispatched via chainsaw to the groin which then rips him in half - ouch! Our heroine then walks into a police station to confess to killing Crowley and in the process is thrown in jail, stripped naked, and showered down Rambo style.

The plot is pretty much the same as the previous two movies, a group heads into the swamp only to be dispatched one by one in inventive and often downright comical ways by Hulking maniac Crowley. Can they stop him for good this time? The movie flies by at a breakneck pace and theres rarely a dull moment, featuring lots of inventive gore and humor, long time fans should pretty much know what they're in for.

Surprisingly however this time around for better or worse there is a distinct lack of nudity. Whats a slasher throwback without a few perfectly perk bussoms? Sigh. Perhaps to make up for the lack of boob there are quite a few familiar faces in this one, Zach Galligan of Gremlins fame plays the sheriff, Caroline Williams of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 fame plays his estranged wife, we even have Roach from Wes Craven's People Under The Stairs in this, its like a horror fans wet dream - well not quite, but almost.

Hatchet III for the most part is a step up from Part 2 and should satisfy fans blood lust until the inevitable Hatchet IV. You heard it here first kids, Hatchet IV: Marybeth Strikes Back.

Final Verdict:

Slightly darker in tone than its predecessors Hatchet III delivers scares, gore, familiar faces, and a pretty nice side view of Danielle Harris's tooshie. Horror fans should be pretty pleased with this one.

Rating:

Pretty much how horror sequels should be done. 3 stars out of 5 for this.

Movie Review: The Last Stand (2013)

Starring : Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jaimie Alexander

The Lowdown:

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in his first starting role since 2003s Disappointing Terminator 3: Rise of the machines. Does he still have what it takes to be a leading man at the age of 65? Don't be an idiot, of course he does.Arnold plays Ray Owens, the sheriff of the small town Summerton, who finds himself gearing up for battle to stop a dangerous felon passing through his town and reaching the Mexican border.

The Last Stand is the perfect comeback vehicle for Schwarzenegger and features top notch action and surprisingly enough some decent gore. But the only downside of the movie is it takes a while to get going.and at times it feels like Arnold doesn't get enough screen time.

His Co-stars do an ample job, Jaimie Alexander in particular gives a good performance as one of Schwarzenegger's deputies who isn't quite ready for the ensuing battle but nevertheless steps up to the plate. There's also a love story thrown in for good measure but that's not why we came to see this is it, we came for the action and one liners and on that front it delivers.

When the action kicks in Schwarzenegger is back to what he does best, firing big guns and sprouting off humor laced one liners. Notable ones this time being "Welcome to Summerton" after dispatching loads of bad guys with an antique machine gun and "I'm the sheriff" after putting a bullet through a guys head who asked who the hell he is. The Last Stand also features Schwarzenegger's finest hand to hand combat fight which is quite a feat considering he is 65.

Fans of Johnny Knoxville may be disappointed to find out Knoxville s part is no more than an extended cameo but he does a fine job with the material he is given.

Final Verdict:

While not on par with Schwarzenegger's classics such as Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Predator , The Last Stand is certainly a much better film that the box office numbers would have you believe. Filled with impressive action, witty one liners and thrilling car chases,

The Last Stand is a great film for old school action junkies and Schwarzenegger die hard's alike. Its a perfect way to "Let off some steam".

Rating:

Ignored by the general public, The Last Stand is Schwarzenegger back doing what he does best. Ignore the naysayers its a blast. Here's to Arnie kicking ass till hes 85! 3 out of 5 Stars.

The Lowdown:

I'm starting out my first movie review of 2013 by talking about a movie that i had no idea was in existence until last night. Ill tell you the truth, 3 Geezers took me by surprise. Filmed in mockumentary fashion the film follows actor J Kimball (J.K. Simmons) as he researches what its like to be old for a movie entitled "Do Not Resuscitate" which he is forced to star in as a favor for his wife. His research takes him to The Coconuts Convalescent Home where he meets 3 old men surprisingly still full of vitality. The premise is fine, its the execution that is flawed as the movie is technically just a 75 minute gag about getting old with no real plot or drama.

That being said i did find myself having fun with the film as it has some likeable characters in the form of Victor, the 85 year old avid "sexter" and super smooth ladies man Bernard aka "Big Sexy" and chronicles all their shenanigans from going trick or treating, getting drunk, to cruising the streets rapping along to profanity laced rap songs.

It would have been nice to see some drama or emotion injected into the film because if watching a group of octogenarians take Viagra and make bed wetting jokes isn't your idea of a good film then sadly you wont find much to like here. If however you like lowbrow comedies like Juno and Super, you might just find some laughs in this, even though there's not much of a story line.

Final Verdict:

At 75 minutes long the film fly's by and never lingers on too long. Filled with sex maniac octogenarians and little old ladies writhing round the pool in homage to Phoebe Cates this film is bound to be an acquired taste. But its fun and never takes itself too seriously, and if you're in the mood for a different kind of comedy, you might be able to get a few laughs out of this.
