New Delhi: Languishing at the bottom of the points table, both Kenya and Canada will only have pride at stake as they lock horns in a battle of minnows in a Group A match of the cricket World Cup here tomorrow.

Both Canada and Kenya have nothing to take home from the sub-continent as the two non-Test playing nations have lost all three of their World Cup matches.

In a tournament where Ireland won hearts by notching up an upset win over England, Kenya and Canada have not been able to produce any inspiring performance so far.

Canada, at best, came close to giving a scare to Pakistan when they bowled out the Asian giants for a paltry 184 but they threw away that opportunity when their batsmen came up with a listless performance.

Chasing 185, Ashish Bagai's men were bundled out for 138 in 42.5 overs after being in the hunt at 104 for three at one point in their innings.

Kenya, on the other hand, have been worse. The African nation, which created a sensation by entering semi-finals of the 2007 World Cup, has failed to even give a fight in its last three outings.

Jimmy Kamande's men could not even bat the whole 50 overs and scored 69, 112 and 142 against New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka respectively and the skipper admitted this is one area where they have to improve.

"Our big concern is we are not batting out our 50 overs.

That's the one area we want to work on very, very hard because you can't win matches without batting your full quota of overs," Kamande said ahead of their match at the Feroze shah Kotla stadium here.

"After all these tough matches against Test sides, we need to show that we have learnt from them. Canada have also suffered big defeats and we know they will also come hard at us and that's what we should be prepared for," he added.

Kenya wicketkeeper Maurice Ouma said the team is pumped up and will look to win at least two out of three matches (against Canada and Zimbabwe) before facing Australia.

"We are pretty much geared up for the match. Canada's bowling is something which is not new to us. We are quite familiar with their bowling attack because we have played against them quite a few times last year," he said.

Canada's batting has been no better. While their bowlers, led by medium-pacer Harvir Baidwan and spinner Balaji Rao have done well against Pakistan, their batters have failed to bat the entire 50 overs.

Bagai had admitted after their match against Pakistan that batting is a concern.

"Our batting let us down, we just played poorly during our chase. Ireland played pretty bravely against England and that's why losing against Pakistan was more disappointing," said Bagai.

Given that there is not much to choose between the two teams in terms of caliber, it would be an interesting contest with both sides evenly matched.

After playing smaller teams in their opening ICC Cricket World Cup matches, both sides face their first real test on February 27 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for a high-voltage Group B encounter. The biggest worry, though, will be rain, which is predicted for Sunday.

England almost embarrassed themselves against a determined Netherlands in their first game. However, MS Dhoni will take them lightly at his peril.

India and England have won three matches apiece in their Cup face-offs so far.

However, India emerged victors when the two sides last met (of course outside the ICC CWC) at the same venue in 2008. In a rain-curtailed affair, Dhoni's boys won the match via Duckworth-Lewis method.

Overall, the hosts have dominated over the years, leading England 38-30 in 70 ties played so far.

Although India’s resounding win against Bangladesh in their opening clash was an auspicious start, Dhoni and the Indian think-tank will still need to attend to some outstanding concerns.

Their fielding needs a serious shake-up. Against Bangladesh, they may not have had to pay any price for their slipshod act, it would prove costly against Andrew Strauss’s men.

England, on the other hand, have critical worries too. Their bowling and fielding were lacklustre against Netherlands. The commitment seemed amiss. The likes of strike bowler James Anderson and Stuart Broad looked extremely ineffective. It appeared they were unwilling to bend their arms.

However, England skipper Andrew Strauss has refused to read much into their performance against the Dutch. When asked about how the English bowling will fare against, perhaps, the best batting line-up in the world, Strauss stressed: “We’ll have to get rid of (Virender) Sehwag early on. If he gets going, it’s going to be difficult for us. However, we are confident that we have the depth to challenge the Indian batting.”

The stage is set for a mouth-watering clash, provided rain-gods refrain from being party-poopers!

Approaching milestones

- Virender Sehwag (973 at an average of 37.42 in 26 matches) requires 27 runs to become the third Indian to complete 1,000 runs against England. Sachin Tendulkar (1335) and Yuvraj Singh (1129) are the only two Indians with 1,000 runs or more against England.

- In case of an Indian win, it will be their 50th under Gary Kirsten. At present, India's records under him reads - Played: 81, Won: 49 Lost: 28 and NR:4 Winning % 63.63.

- Andrew Strauss (3959 at an average of 35.34 in 121 matches) needs 41 runs to complete his 4,000 runs in ODIs.

India embark on one of the toughest assignments in recent times to South Africa, billed as the fight out for the number one Test team in the world.

India have registered just one win in the last 12 outings to South Africa, when Shanthakumaran Sreesanth mesmerised the South African batsmen with his guile and swing, producing a man-of-the-match performance with figures of five for 40 four seasons back.

The ascent to the top of the rankings for Indian side has mainly come through home victories, so it will be interesting to see if India can register their first series victory in South Africa this time.

The only away win came in New Zealand during March and April last year when they won the series 1-0 - the three matches being India's only three outside the sub-continent in their last 30 Tests.

In an effort to acclimatise to the conditions, the BCCI approved the advice of coach Gary Kirsten to spend extra time in South Africa in the absence of any tour games. The players are training at Kirsten's cricket academy in Cape Town before moving to Johannesburg to join the rest of the squad. The Indians will return from South Africa on 24th January, less than a month before their first World Cup match against Bangladesh in Dhaka on 19th February.

More than the swing and seam, it will be the bounce that will be on offer to conquer for the world’s strongest middle order comprising Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Suresh Raina.

The war of words has started long back with South African premier fast bowler Dale Steyn has singling out the Indian opening pair to give attention this series. The consistent performance at the top of the order from combination of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir is one of the major reasons for India’s success in the longest format of the game.

South Africa are fresh from the UAE tour, where they played on placid tracks against Pakistan, and their ability to take 20 wickets was questioned. However, playing at home, they will be a different proposition altogether, enjoying an enviable record.

India started off with a win at Newlands last time, only to fritter away the lead to succumb to 2-1 defeat. Africans. They will be aware of it and would like to tie loose ends in their preparation for the first Test, which starts at Centurion on 16th December.

The three Tests in Centurion (16th-20th December), Durban (26th-30th December) and Cape Town (2nd-6th January) will be followed by a Twenty20 match and five One-Day Internationals.

It will be a mouth-watering contest between the two giants of cricket with the winner walking away with the mantle of the undisputed top team in Test matches.

The first Test, to be played at the Gabba, Brisbane, does not appear as though it will confirm to traditional values of the location. Usually a batsman friendly pitch, there is a tinge of green on the wicket here this year and the ground is soft from heavy spring time rain. There is also the threat of rain affecting this game which will play into the bowlers hands.

It will almost entirely be controlled by the quick bowlers. Graeme Swann of England and his opposing number, debutant Xavier Doherty, might not have an awful lot to do with the ball. That said, Doherty might himself be brought on upon Kevin Pietersen’s arrival at the crease, chosen as he has been, seemingly at least, with the sole purpose of exposing and exploiting KP’s weakness against slow left-arm bowling.

Peter Siddle will also play for the hosts, claiming the last bowling spot at the expense of the toupee-donning Doug Bollinger. His outright aggression will look to unsettle England but the visitors look to be made of sterner stuff, so the brunt of the ‘fear-factor’ bowling will rest on the fragile shoulders of Mitchell Johnson; he who was so mercilessly flogged by England at Lord’s in 2009.

As we know, however, the previous series counts for little in Ashes encounters. Johnson has a chance to exercise one or two demons against the ‘Poms’ and will be more than ready for battle.

James Anderson is perhaps the one bowler within the touring ranks with a point to prove Down Under. He had a woeful tour here four years ago but the words ‘green-top’ and ‘cloud-cover’ will be music to his ears. Such conditions saw the Lancastrian hooping the ball round corners during the English summer. The Dukes ball, choice of England, is quite different to the Kookaburra, preferred here. England’s mastery, or lack thereof, of the different cherry will be central to which way the pendulum swings.

Besides that, there really isn’t much to add. If conditions play out as are being widely predicted, it will be a tough first Test for both batting line-ups and the spotlight will fall on both bowling units. Whichever one prevails will set the tone for an enthralling winter of cricket.

Having played out a dull, high-scoring draw at the SSC, the test series between India and Sri Lanka now moves on to another stadium in Colombo, the P Saravanamuttu Oval, for the third and final match of the series, which gets underway on Tuesday. Sri Lanka won the test match comprehensively in Galle followed by some resilient batting and equally sloppy bowling by both sides which led to a drab draw at the SSC.

The P Sara Oval though, is believed to be a different proposition, known to assist the bowlers much more as compared to the SSC. With 10 tests out of 14 played at the ground producing a result, both bowling attacks would heave a sigh of relief. While the pacemen should get a lot of purchase in the first couple of days, the pitch will eventually start turning, getting the spinners into the equation on the fourth and the fifth day.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's Indians have been at best average on the tour, and had it not been for an inspired effort from the veteran - newcomer duo of Sachin Tendulkar and Suresh Raina, a follow-on was well on the cards for India at the SSC. Gautam Gambhir, who missed the second test due to a swelling on the knee, has been ruled out of the third, making the task further difficult.

The bowling attack has been below mediocre, and as if that wasn't enough, Harbhajan Singh looks set to follow Gambhir on the sidelines, after having not trained with the team on the eve of the test match. Harbhajan has just taken 2 wickets for 304 runs in the series but if the already depleted attack is robbed of its senior most bowler, the Indians might be in for a hammering.

The batting would once again need to be top class if India are to harbour any hopes of drawing the series and Murali Vijay should continue to open with Virender Sehwag, having impressed in the second test. Raina's ton on debut poses an interesting question in front of the skipper with Yuvraj Singh also available to be picked, though we feel Raina would be given another go after that dream start. In the bowling too, there would be changes expected with Pragyan Ojha having taken just 1 wicket in the series so far. Ideally, the Indian team would have wanted to replace Pragyan Ojha with the leggie, but with Harbhajan now a doubt for the test it will be interesting to see which two from Ojha, Mishra and the medium pacer Munaf Patel are selected to complement the two frontline seamers.

Sri Lanka:

Though it has been confirmed that even a 2-0 win would not propel the Lankans to the No. 1 spot in the test rankings, a 2-0 series win against the current No.1 team would propel Sangakkara's side to no.2 in the rankings and leave them just 1 point adrift of catching India. The Lankans would also be keen on reversing the scoreline from their visit to India late last year.

Though the Indians took the lead in the first innings at the SSC, it was Sri Lanka who dominated the test for long periods and were the only side who threatened to push for a result. The trio of Sangakkara, Paranavitana and Mahela Jayawardene have cracked five centuries between them in the series which has given Dilshan, Samaraweera and the likes the license to play freely. The batting looks indestructible against the current Indian attack, and should they be able to bat 4 sessions in the first innings, chances are the series is in the bag.

With Malinga set to return, the bowling will be considerably sharper. Dammika Prasad would most likely make way for the super slinga. Dilhara Fernando, is likely to retain his place ahead of Chanaka Welegedara thanks to his good historic track on this ground. Suraj Randiv and Ajantha Mendis had enough about them in the second test to keep Rangana Herath on the bench this time out as well.

India: M Vijay, Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman, Suresh Raina, Dhoni (C), Ishant, Mithun, Ojha, Munaf Patel/Harbhajan Singh.

Sri Lanka: Dilshan, Paranavitana, Sangakkara (C), Jayawardene, Samaraweera, Mathews, Prasanna Jaywardene, Randiv, Mendis, Malinga, Fernando.

Watch Out For:

Sachin Tendulkar will set a new record tomorrow with what will be his 169th test match, making him the highest capped test player ever. Despite his age, the master blaster still remains as enthusiastic and as fresh as a boy playing cricket for the first time. The third test would be a salute to his never-say-die spirit and he would love the idea of making the occasion all the more special with another scintillating knock.

T Dilshan: While his counterparts have taken full toll of the pitches on offer in the series, flamboyant opener Dilshan has failed to carry on to a big score, after having had good starts. His highest score has been 68 so far in the series and though the P Sara Oval would pose more questions, Dilshan has the arsenal to answer all of them.

Ishant Sharma: With Harbhajan Singh not playing, Ishant finds himself in the uncommon position of having to lead the attack. He himself has been erratic in the series, though has also provided flashes of brilliance. One session from an Ishant in top form could be enough to slice through the Sri Lankan top order.
