Why Linux Is Better for Programming

Have ever asked yourself the question of why Linux and why programmers seem to prefer Linux and why Linux just seems to be really hyped among developers?

This is a question that I've asked myself in the past and especially before starting to use Linux. This is the question that I'll be answering in today's article which is why Linux? Okay so what is it that actually makes Linux really popular among programmers well the answer is that there's actually lots of things but I'm gonna go through the major ones that I've found that are generally accepted among programmers.

Why Linux is really great:

As like what makes Linux really great and from what I've found there's about seven things that programmers in general appreciate about Linux so let's go through them.

The first one is security this simply means that Linux tends to be a safer system so you won't need antivirus software and viruses overall just aren't really an issue. So it's a really secure system and you won't get bothered by needing to find and pay for antivirus software and then update that software and get notified by it etc. Linux just works and is safe the reason that Linux is really secure is because of the fact that the Linux operating system is open source this means that anyone who wants to can look at the source code for the system and if you aren't familiar with this concept then this may sound like it would be the opposite of safe since anyone can find vulnerabilities and create viruses for it or exploit the vulnerabilities really easily and that's not wrong anyone can do that and a lot of people do try to do this but the thing is that Linux is a really popular operating system as that means that there's so many people reading through the source code. Every day and like looking for these vulnerabilities so that they can patch them themselves because of the fact that they are actually using the system themselves so they don't want these vulnerabilities there and so they try to fix them and so what ends up happening is that there's actually very few of these vulnerabilities out there and the ones that are out there become really really hard to find because so many people are actually looking for them and that also means that even if there

are a few bad people out there looking for these flaws and trying to exploit them in a bad way. For every bad person that's out there trying to find these flaws there's potentially like a thousand good people out there looking for the exact same flaw and trying to eliminate it and so that kind of results in a really safe system.

The second reason is that Linux can improve your programming workflow the package manager in Linux is a godsend for programmers in terms of efficiency. If you want to install something or use something new just type in Sudo (apt get install) whatever you want to use and then within a couple of seconds or a minute or two you get it and you're ready to rock this

is something that can sometimes be painstakingly difficult in other operating systems. First of all you need to install a package manager in mac OS and windows if you want to have a good

reliable one and just doing that can be a difficult task for a beginner with Linux that just comes pre-installed and you're ready to go and it also has a lot of packages already installed and set up. Let's take a really simple example here that kind of illustrates both point number one about security and also point number two about ease of use and just workflow in general. Let's say that you wanted to install VLC media player on your windows machine what you'd have to do is you'd have to first open up a web browser of some kind then you'd have to find or like google search for VLC media player find the right actual website to actually download it go to that website press the download link start to download it run the exe file and then choose whatever like installation location and then after you've done all that you potentially also need to restart your computer for these like changes to take effect or for you to be able to actually use the program. Now let's say that you wanted to do that exact same thing but in Linux all you'd have to do is open up a terminal window and type in Sudo apt get install VLC and hit enter and then you're done the windows approach leaves a lot of room for errors to occur you could get to the wrong site and accidentally download malware or you could get to the right site but accidentally press one of the thousands of download now buttons that is actually an ad for something completely different compared to Linux where you just type it in and it automatically does everything for you making sure to get it from the right source so you won't accidentally get the wrong thing or malware. As a programmer we usually work with lots of different technologies and we're installing things constantly to get things to work so making the process of installing stuff as easy and safe as possible is really important and Linux does this really well.

The third reason is no rebooting this is something that I touched on in the previous point when I was explaining about how installing something in windows might work and how at the end of

that process you might end up having to restart the entire computer just to be able to work with whatever it was you installed and this is not the case with Linux and in fact with Linux it's to the point where you can update the entire operating system without having to actually reboot and this is neither possible with mac OS nor with windows and is something that. I think it is really important because of the fact that as a programmer we tend to install lots of different things and so the ability to just be able to install something without them having to reboot the entire machine for those changes to take effect is something that I think it is really important when doing research for this article I found an article on Techmint that talks about why Linux is often used for servers and this no rebooting point was one of the reasons according to the article why Linux is used for servers. This is something that they touch on in a part of the article where they talk about the fact that Linux is built for stability and reliability many Linux servers on the internet have been running for years without failure.

The fourth reason is that Linux actually comes with a ton of really powerful programming tools pre-installed things like grip wget cron and lots of other things that once you learn how they work can be extremely powerful tools that again can help you improve your workflow this is a point that's highly individual and it really depends on your specific use case because there's so many pre-installed tools that come with Linux and it also depends on like what specific distro of the Linux you choose to go with because certain distros come with certain extra

tools like kali Linux for instance comes with a lot of like hacking specific tools.

Number five on our list is task automation Linux is almost built for automation of tasks I'm not an advanced user yet I'm still learning and exploring the wonders of Linux but more experienced Linux users who also know how to code rarely need to do anything twice because of the fact that Linux lends itself really well for automation a pretty common thing in the Linux community is something referred to as one-liners which is often used to refer to short little scripts that you write to automate a task you may find yourself doing three things in a row every morning as you start up your computer maybe you always open up Spotify to play a certain playlist and then you open up your latest project that you're working on and then you open up discord.

The sixth point is performance and no Linux is not necessarily faster than any other operating system but it is very lightweight for an OS and is compatible with pretty much any machine you can find you can run Linux on almost anything so this means that you can very often take an old laptop that is virtually useless because of being so slow and install Linux on that machine and all of a sudden breathe new life into that a machine that was impossible to work with before is now all of a sudden working really well. There are more performance benefits of

Linux like the reliability of the systems and other things like that but I feel like this is like the major one like being able to revive a dead computer is something that's really useful I think and it's also really like environmentally friendly because it means that your laptop running Linux will last you so much longer than one running mac OS or windows okay.

I think that is something that's really important to programmers but like I said I don't think that it's a reason to choose Linux over mac OS or windows. It's not an actual benefit it's just like appearance benefits I guess there could be like benefits of it where you set up the environment to be more productive for you because you can customize certain things but overall I don't think that it's a major point to why you should choose Linux over windows and mac OS but yeah it is a really interesting point and once you start going down the rabbit hole that is like Linux customization you'll quickly realize that you can spend an entire lifetime. There all right so in conclusion there really aren't that many things that you can do on Linux that are impossible to do on other systems.

Functional Programming

In every single functional programming article you're gonna see that it says in functional programming we treat functions as a first-class citizens to the point
absolutely 100% accurate but sometimes these phrases get so much popular that you start wondering what it actually means can somebody tell me in a plain
simple language?

What is Functional programming:

In this article I'm gonna explain you what functional programming is and I promise you after reading this article it's gonna be absolutely simple and absolutely breeze to understand what functional programming is. Now before we move on to understand the functional programming I got a question for you as of now currently in whatever the programming language you are writing your code let me know in the comment section are you using procedural way of writing programs or you are using object-oriented way or you're already using functional programming??. Another thing is that functional programming is absolutely amazing and it's mostly independent of programming language but support of functional programming is now very gentle in some of the programming language only some are supporting it. Some are releasing updates to support it and eventually in future many more programming language will come up and we'll support functional programming functional programming it's not a new jargon it just is a way a style of writing programming and treating some values and some function in a bit different way than we used to treat it in object-oriented programming.
Now definitely there are a variety of definitions in every single programmer can debate in the world of functional programming whether this is functional or this is not but there are three core important things on which every single programmer is going to agree that. Yes these are the part of functional programming and I can explain you them in a much easier way on a code editor so let's move.

Four Cores:

There so there are four core important things that you absolutely need to know the first one is that functional programming is more aware of writing style of code so it's majorly independent of programming language but there are some programming language which is supporting it's - it's at its best some are not so there are a couple of concepts that you need to understand. Let me expand this this is just simply is code and I'm not gonna be running any code I'm gonna just explain these syntax using the help of code so. Let's just say we got a score and you are playing on to some great level you got a score of 450. Now on that let's just say you have a function again this is not really a core function that just the gist of how function usually looks like so we're gonna simply say that at this exact stage you have done something so that we want to add a bonus appear what you can do up here you can simply call this up here simply say score is gonna be equals to score plus and you just add some number like 50 and finally you just go ahead and return score and don't yell at me by saying hey you should say this dot score. It's more over about understanding the concept not exactly pinpointing the stuff so this is all okay but this is not really much of an acceptable thing in functional programming in functional programming you're gonna notice that these things don't happen moreover a functional if I write this into a functional programming way I would write it in a bit different manner I would write the same function like this. I'm gonna simply say that hey this is my
function again add a bonus and this is gonna take a parameter score and what we're gonna do now here we are gonna simply just hit return and we're gonna simply say whatever the bonus or whatever the score we have got we just want to add let's just say 45 on to add. Now there's a huge difference between this piece of code and this piece of code now it's not much shorter you can also make it a shorter like this but that's not the point in the functional programming we keep our functions and data totally separate so that's the step number one or kind of a unspoken rule in the functional way so that keep your data and keep your functional totally separate while debugging this piece of code is much easier to debug because it is not referring to any global variable which might be causing the issue this is moreover like self intake function which just runs on its own and it's also not much very dependent on what kind of data we are passing whether it's a score or maybe it's life whatever it is it's just gonna add 50 to it so that's the basic gist of it so that's the one thing keep your data and your functions totally separate so that's one step.

Now again one another thing is actually state change so this is state change is if I can write that this is state change is a very interesting thing and it's a bit difficult to understand for beginners but I'm gonna try my best these examples will just simplify like ridiculous level. So it says that you should not change the state much often as much as you can avoid it just do it for example I am iteration I say let's just say hey a lot which is true and then later on I realized that this variable should not say hey it should say something like hey there and then I realize the same variable should say something like this hey there and then everyone so there is nothing wrong in this style of code we are just having a variable and this variable is getting updated all the time. Now keeping the track of this state is actually a bit tricky to understand this one so in functional programming style. We actually don't reuse this variable much often we don't change it much often in fact what we do is let's just say hey page says hey and then we want to update the somehow so we're gonna say that H on have redness day says hey there if I can write it hey there and hit H on a Saturday says hey there again come on hey there everyone so this is more like a functional style you don't update the same variable in fact. It is okay to really clear or kind of a newly declare again available with some more
modification so that it's much more clear and it's okay for us so this thing is pretty common of the don't change your state and mutability immutability. This is common thing in the function
programming again the rule of thumb is that make sure you don't really update the same variable again and again you instead declare more of them.

Do you want to know the last part of it?
Now coming up on to the last part which is very funny and pretty interesting as well so in this what they say is something like this function or functions are treated as first class okay this is a bit of a bit difficult statement to understand for beginners but I'm gonna make it absolutely ridiculously simple. So let's just say we have a Const with H and it is storing 50 I don't know why I'm always using 50 but that's it and we also have got a variable which is named in your language however you define it that's okay and if I just say this variable is it age that's okay but what functional programming says that the way you are treating your numbers and string and you are throwing them around anywhere like you can declare them in a variable you can pass them in a function you can return them in a function the same kind of treatment should be given to the functions as well so we can simply say Const add score something like that score and that can also be a simple function whatever you want to do inside that that should be the case I want to men want to say this so this is how the function should look like in a functional programming it can be it should be able to store functions into any variable and not only that if let's just say you have a method which say say hello and this is our method in here also you should be able to accept function as a parameter so I can simply say function and then simply say like this whatever you want to say or maybe a reference would be a better example but this actually makes things simple and easy and here also you can come up and simply say hey return and then we can say function and like this da-da-da-da-da. So this is it we can store the function into available we can pass it as a parameter we can return it as whatever the data type it is so this is the gist of a functional programming.

Which Programming Language Should I Learn First

Hey Everyone! So which programming language should you learn first my short answer would be pick either Python or JavaScript and throughout this article I'm gonna explain why I picked those two
particular languages and I'm gonna walk you through the process for picking the right first language for yourself for your particular situation and preferences so as you pick.
The first language for yourself one thing to keep in mind is that once you know one language whether it's Sybil's plus Java or anything else as long as you know one it's gonna be much easier to learn any additional languages because all programming languages are sort of related and similar. So I would say if you already started learning one language and if you like what you're learning just keep going with that other than that there are three points you should consider as you pick the right first language for yourself number one the job market actually the job market is a tricky point to consider because it highly depends on your location and the industry you want to get into so.
For example if you want to get into a start-up in San Francisco good languages to learn might be JavaScript NGO or Python and if you're interested in going into gaming or banking a better option might be C-Sharp or C++. So I would say just take a look at the job postings of the kinds of jobs you're interested in on websites like LinkedIn and indeed calm and just look at what their requirements are now the second point to consider is what you want to build. I'm just gonna give you a quick list here if you want to build I Oh s apps so
whether iPhone apps or iPad apps I would go with Swift and if you want to build Android apps I would go with Java first(As well as Kotlin and C#).

And then maybe call in after that if you want to build websites I would get started with JavaScript HTML and CSS. First and if you're into debt analysis engineering science or machine learning I would get started with Python. And if you want to game the moment I would go with C sharp or C++ so as you can see there are a lot of different options here depending on what you want to build and the third point to consider is the ease of learning like. So what programming language should you learn first well it highly depends on your particular situation but I would say in general try to find something that fulfills all of these three criteria so ideally find something that's in demand in the job market. Lets you build something you want to build and is relatively easy to learn and that actually brings us to Python and Javascript and that's because they're both relatively easy to learn and they both tend to be in demand in the job market as well so which one of these programming languages should you learn
first that actually depends on what you want to build so if you're more interested in the logic side of things than visuals then. I would say go with Python. Python is often used to build server-side code or back-end code of websites which is basically the code that runs on your servers many companies also use Python for their analysis data science and machine learning purposes.
So if you're interested in building websites instead I would first go with JavaScript and if you go with JavaScript first learn HTML and CSS so the way it works is HTML and CSS determine where your webpages look like and JavaScript allows you to add functionality to those webpages. For example you can add a piece of functionality that says when I click this button right here it's going to change the color of this other button right there and you can see all of that HTML CSS and JavaScript as a set of code that runs on your device or on your browser and that's called a front-end code and that alone the front-end code is actually not enough to make a complete website. For example something like Facebook because when you go tofacebook.com Facebook needs to know who your friends are and that information is
not stored on your device or on your browser it's stored somewhere Facebook's server so you need code that runs on Facebook's server or your own website server and that's called
back-end code which I mentioned earlier as opposed to front-end code and to make back-end code developers use something else.

For example nodejs which is based on JavaScript or Django or flask which are something called web frameworks that are based on Python. So actually to make a complete website you need to learn a lot of things HTML CSS and JavaScript as well as at least one web framework but I would say just start with HTML CSS and JavaScript if you're interested in building a website.

How to Learn to Code

Hey Everyone!

My name is Habib. So in this article I'm gonna show you how to learn to code the best resources available online how to choose a personal project to work on and my thoughts on getting a computer science degree or going to coding boot camp I actually briefly talked about this topic.

If you want to do some coding usually you first need to set up some kind of special environment on your computer and if you're beginner it's actually really easy to get stuck just trying to set up the right environment you know installing the right things and setting up the right things.

When it comes to building a personal project the most common question I get is how should I choose which project to work on there are basically three criteria. I would personally use for choosing which project to work on first of all you should choose something that you're interested in building or that you're interested in doing already so for example if you're like playing video games. You might want to create a simple video game and if you like photography maybe you can build a portfolio website where you can show off all your best photos and if you like trading stocks or even bitcoins. Maybe you can build a system that analyzes stock charts for you and whatever you choose it's really important to choose something that you can keep motivated about.

The second point to consider is you should start

with something that's really simple so if you want to be able to say a video game don't start with something really complex like legal lessons but start with something simpler like flappy bird or even tic-tac-toe and if you want to build a website don't start with something complete like Facebook but just start with a to-do list website and then go from there.

The third point to consider is

ideally you should build something that's useful for yourself or for someone else and that way it's gonna give you extra motivation you know so that it works for yourself or for someone else and if you can say something like I built this thing and it was used by ten thousand people it's gonna look really good on your resume but that's kind of hard so I would say first focus on the first two criteria so at least find something that you're interested in building and that's pretty simple to build and just in case you don't have any ideas here are a few ideas for you to get started with a to-do list app or a website or something like Twitter but something that's much simpler than Twitter so just the ability to tweet and follow someone else and if you like video games start with something simple like Tetris Sudoku or just tic-tac-toe.

Once you start learning programming fundamentals and

once you start building your first personal project actually it's very likely that you get stuck at some point and it's very natural because you're beginner and programming is actually really hard but when you're stuck it's actually really important to know how to get help from other people and the first thing you should try is actually you should just use Google so let's say just as an example you've been building this program and don't worry too much about what it's doing and let's say it's going just fine buts only you get an error message so this is pretty similar to what a typical error message looks like it says recursion error here and then you have a bunch of nonsense here really and then here it says recursion error maximum recursion blah blah blah.

Let's say you don't know what this error

message means what you should do then is you should just copy this error message and then type that into Google and hopefully you'll be able to find someone else who had the same problem and then you'll be able to find an answer to how to solve that issue - and one trick. I sometimes do in Google is I put this error message in quotation marks and just like that I can tell Google to find webpages that have these exact same words in the exact same order because without these quotation marks sometimes Google finds webpages that are not directly related to what I'm looking for and once you start doing this this website called stuck overflow will come up over and over again in your Google results and it's like a Q&A website for software developers and it's one of the best resources for any programming related questions so when you have any programming related questions you should just first try using Google and Stack Overflow then if you can't find anything that's relevant on there you can also ask something yourself on Stack Overflow just keep in mind that it might take a while to get an answer say 2 to 3 weeks or longer other than that for asking questions I'd recommend web sites like Reddit for the learn programming subreddit.

You should try to get a job or an internship as soon as possible and ideally a paid one too so when you're learning everything on your own you might make a lot of mistakes but you might not even realize that so if you get a job and if you start working with other software engineers they'll be able to give you some feedback on your code so you'll be able to learn much faster and hopefully you'll be able to get paid at the same time and obviously there are different ways of applying for jobs like using LinkedIn.

I mostly talked about how to learn to code on your own so you might say what about going to a university or going to a coding bootcamp if you don't have a degree yet and if you're planning to get one soon. I definitely recommend computer science and that's partly because computer science will give you sort of fundamental knowledge that you need for writing efficient code.

But if you already have a degree let's say in biology or art history or whatever I personally wouldn't take a second degree in computer science just to learn coding unless it's like a shorter program let's say for two years because I think addition of four years is just way too long and what about coding boot camps well. First of all in case you don't know what a coding boot camp is it's sort of like a private school you can go to for three to four months to learn to code basically and I think they're really good for the support systems they have so if you get stuck you can just ask questions and the pressure that's built in for you to learn at a set schedule so the downside of a coding boot camp is that it's kind of expensive.
