The Janitor who Revolutionized Elevator Design

The El Cortez Hotel in San Diego has been recognized by numerous architects and engineers as a pioneer in design. Indeed, it has set trends in various ways, but there’s more to its story. During its heyday, it was regarded as one of the nation’s most sophisticated hotels, becoming a preferred destination. Guests chose it not just for San Diego’s attractions, but for the experience of staying at the hotel itself. Eventually, its fame and the resulting high occupancy led the management to conclude that the hotel’s single elevator was inadequate.

The hotel’s affluent and well-educated executive team, along with a group of equally affluent and educated architects and engineers, embarked on a project. Their unanimous decision followed conventional wisdom: they planned to cut through each level, from the basement to the roof, to make room for an additional elevator. It seemed like a logical solution, didn’t it?

One morning, just as construction was about to commence, a janitor at the hotel caught wind of the conversation happening in the main lobby. With a discreet push of his mop bucket, he edged closer to the gathering and eavesdropped as the team members presented their segments to the hotel’s management. The proposal was impressive and seemed logical. Yet, the janitor, with utmost respect, inquired about the nature of their discussion. The engineers and architects, judging him by his attire, were somewhat taken aback by his intrusion. Nonetheless, a team member explained the current elevator’s capacity issues and their intended solution of installing a new one.

The janitorThe janitor listened attentively to the full explanation, observing the team’s confident affirmations. He then pointed out the obvious drawbacks: the significant disruption and noise from heavy machinery, drilling, and hammering, which could negatively impact the guests’ experience. An engineer quickly countered, stating that the hotel would close during construction, rendering the janitor’s concerns moot.

Undeterred, the janitor highlighted another clear issue: the financial burden of the project. Moreover, closing the hotel for an extended period would lead to job losses, exacerbating the already high unemployment rate. He questioned what the employees would do for employment during this time.

An architect, weary from the ongoing debate, posed a direct question: “Do you have a better suggestion?”

After a brief pause, the janitor responded with a query of his own, asking if the possibility of constructing the elevator on the hotel’s exterior had been considered. The team took a moment before acknowledging that an external elevator was unprecedented. The janitor listed several immediate advantages: the hotel could operate uninterrupted during construction, thereby maintaining revenue to fund the new build. There would be no need to dismiss nearly a hundred workers, and the absence of interior demolition meant no internal cleanup.

The project for the inaugural external elevator commenced posthaste. To some, this hotel represents the origin of a novel architectural concept. My perspective on the hotel and its backstory is one of insight. It teaches us that the most educated or skilled individuals don’t always hold the monopoly on the best ideas. This underscores the importance of diversity in our endeavors. Reflecting on General McDew’s commentary last month, I penned his definition of diversity as “a reflection of what makes us unique.” Embracing our individuality and the contributions we each bring is essential, ensuring we continue as the foremost global force in air, space, and cyberspace.

“Acres of Diamonds” is a lecture by Russell H. Conwell, which he delivered no fewer than 6,000 times1. The theme of the lecture was that opportunity lurks in everyone’s backyard. Everyone, Conwell believed, can and ought to get rich and then use that money for the good of others. The lecture has been published as a book and is available on Project Gutenberg for free.

The Story goes something like this

Al Hafed had a large and prosperous farm in the heart of India. He was happy with his life, until a old monk told him about diamonds, the most precious stones in the world. He was consumed by the desire to get rich by finding these rare jewels that he gave up his farm and wandered the world looking for them until he ran out of money. Broke and hopeless, he ended his life by throwing himself into the water

As the new owner of Al Hafed’s farm, he took his camel to a stream in the garden to quench its thirst. He spotted a bright rock sparkling in the water as the camel drank. He brought it back with him and put it on his mantelpiece. The old monk came back to the farm after a few days. He saw the shiny rock on the mantel and identified it as a huge uncut diamond. This was how the Golconda diamond mine was found, one of the most splendid diamond mines in all of human history. Golconda diamonds are famous today as the finest jewels in the world. Some of the world’s most renowned diamonds, such as the Hope diamond, are thought to be from the Golconda mine.

The Lessons from the Acres of Diamonds

The moral of this story is clear: You don’t have to search far and wide for opportunity, success or wealth. All of the possibilities you could ever want are right where you are now - in your current community, job, family and other situations. For optimal results, we should dig in our own backyard, to find opportunities where we are now. You might be familiar with the saying, “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” We all fantasize about finding our happiness or fortune - somewhere else, in a different scenario, in a different city, with a different job or a change in our relationship status. When you reach the “other side of the fence,” you will likely find out that the grass wasn’t so green there after all. On the contrary, the opportunities we look for are probably nearer than we think.

The connection between problems and opportunities

Problems often hold within them the potential for opportunity. The reason that most people never notice them is because no one has ever shown them how to look for them. You see, when they are extracted from the earth, diamonds don’t look like the dazzling, multi-faceted jewels that we all know and admire. They come camouflaged as rough, colorful stones. It requires a skilled eye to spot them. In the same way, opportunities come disguised in “work clothes” - as problems or difficulties to be solved. The average person sees only the problems, and swiftly gives up. But a small number of

Enterprising people persevere through the difficulties to discover and exploit the opportunities they hold. What could the rich farmer have done differently, instead of giving up everything and roaming the world looking for diamonds? He could have started by spending some time and energy to learn how diamonds appear in their natural state. He could have also studied the kinds of rock formations where they are usually found. These two steps would have helped him to greatly improve the chances of finding the riches he wanted. The rich farmer is like most people today, who either see unsurmountable problems and remain where they are now, in silent despair, or run away trying to find new opportunities without any clue what they are searching for.

Remembering Nikola Tesla on His Birthday 10th July

Tesla was a #mysterious man who could see far into the #future. Although deprivileged, he died with a passion for science that changed the 20th century. Still, only a few years ago, the world started to appreciate what he did for mankind. But he wouldn’t mind it

Tesla was born in what is now Croatia on a summer night in 1856, during what he claimed was a #lightning_storm – which led the midwife to say, “He will be a child of the storm,” and his mother to counter prophetically, “No, of the light.”

He discovered and patented the #rotating_magnetic_field, the basis of most alternating-current machinery. He also developed the three-phase system of electric power transmission. In 1891 he invented the Tesla #coil, an induction coil widely used in radio, TV & in other technologies.

In 1898 Tesla announced his invention of a #teleautomatic_boat guided by #remote_control. When skepticism was voiced, Tesla proved his claims for it before a crowd in Madison Square Garden.

In Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he stayed from May 1899 until early 1900, Tesla made what he regarded as his most important discovery—terrestrial stationary waves. By this discovery he proved that #Earth could be used as a #conductor and made to resonate at a certain electrical frequency. He also lit 200 lamps #without_wires from a distance of 40 km (25 miles) and created man-made lightning, producing flashes measuring 41 metres (135 feet). At one time he was certain he had received #signals from #another_planet in his Colorado laboratory, a claim that was met with derision in some scientific journals.

In 1900 (New York), Tesla began construction on Long Island of a #wireless world broadcasting tower, with $150,000 capital from the American financier #J_Pierpont_Morgan. Tesla claimed he secured the loan by assigning 51% of his patent rights of telephony and telegraphy to Morgan. He expected to provide worldwide communication and to furnish facilities for sending pictures, messages, weather warnings, and stock reports. The project was abandoned because of a financial panic, labour troubles, and Morgan’s withdrawal of support. It was Tesla’s greatest defeat.

On his 75th birthday (1931), he received a congratulatory letter from #Einstein and was featured on the cover of #Time magazine.

Three Nobel Prize recipients addressed their tribute to “one of the outstanding intellects of the world who paved the way for many of the technological developments of modern times.”

Tesla was a remarkable person. He said that he had a #photographic memory, which helped him memorize whole books and speak eight languages. He also claimed that many of his best ideas came to him in a #flash, and that he saw detailed pictures of many of his inventions in his #mind before he ever set about constructing prototypes.

In the popular imagination, Tesla played the part of a mad scientist. He claimed that :-
1) he had developed a motor that ran on #cosmic_rays.
2) he was working on a new #non_Einsteinian_physics that would supply a new form of energy.
3) he had discovered a new technique for #photographing thoughts.
4) he had developed a new ray, alternately labeled the #death_ray and the #peace_ray, with vastly greater military potential than Nobel’s munitions.

The Story Behind "Monkey Business"

The Monkey Business story illustrates how fraudulent Businesses operate to defraud its investors and enrich its owners. Please read and learn.

In case you do not know what Monkey Business is all about; Now read this:

A lot of monkeys lived near a village.

One day a merchant came to the village to buy the monkeys.

He announced that he would buy the monkeys for £100 each.

The villagers thought he was mad.

They thought how can somebody buy stray monkeys for £100 each?

Still, some people caught a few monkeys and gave them to the merchant and he gave them £100 for each monkey.

This news spread like wildfire and more people caught more monkeys to sell to the merchant.

After a few days, the merchant announced that he would buy monkeys for £200 each.

Even the lazy villagers now ran around to catch the remaining monkeys and sold them for £200 each.

Then the merchant announced that he will buy monkeys for £500 each.

The villagers started to lose sleep! They caught six or seven monkeys, which was all that was left, and got £500 for each one. Farmers became temporary trappers and neglected their farms and families.

The villagers were waiting anxiously for the next announcement.

Then the merchant said he was going home for a week and when he returned he would buy monkeys for £1,000 each.

He asked his employee to take care of the monkeys he bought.

The merchant went home and the villagers were very sad as there were no more monkeys left for them to sell at £1,000 each.

Then the employee told them he will secretly sell them monkeys for £700 each.

This news spread like wildfire. Since the merchant will buy monkeys for £1,000 each, there is a £300 profit for each monkey.

The next day the villagers made a queue near the monkey cage.

The employee sold all the monkeys for £700 each. The rich bought monkeys in big lots. The poor borrowed money from money lenders and also bought monkeys.

The villagers took care of the monkeys and waited for the merchant to return.

But nobody came.

They ran to the employee, but he had already left too.

The villagers then realised that they had bought the valueless stray monkeys for £700 each and were unable to sell them.

Beware of Monkey Businesses

Real Businesses are always based on Real Products and Services; any profit that comes cheap has a question mark. For instance, invest #2m today and get #4m in 30days. You will get the first month, second month, with the urge to make more money, you invest both the interest and principal into the 3rd month. That's when they vacate.

According to the Greeks there are three types of people on earth,

- the idiots,

- the tribesmen, and

- the citizens.

Studies show only 10% of Africans are citizens.

The remaining 90% are either tribesmen or idiots.

1. THE IDIOTS

When the Greeks used the word "idiot", they did not use it as a curse word.

Idiots are people who just don’t care.

If they write exams, they will cheat.

If they are in government they will steal.

An idiot does not care at all, if he eats bananas he throws the peels anywhere instead of putting them in a trash bin.

According to the Greeks, some societies have more idiots than tribesmen and citizens.

2. THE TRIBESMEN

The next set of people are tribesmen, these are people that look at everything from the point of view of their tribe.

These are people that believe in you only if you are part of their tribe.

It can be terrible to have a tribesman as a leader, he will alienate the rest.

When the Greeks talk about tribes, it’s not just about ethnicity, they also consider religion as a tribe.

A great percentage of Africans are tribesmen, because they view everything from the point of view of their tribes.

They trust only their tribesmen.

3. THE CITIZENS

The last group are citizens.

These are people that like to do things the right way.

They will respect traffic light rules even if no one is watching them.

They drive within speed limits.

They respect the laws, won’t cheat in exams.

In government they won’t steal.

They are compassionate and give to others to promote their wellbeing.

Citizens often promote projects that benefit everyone.

The Greeks called this group the citizens.

Some countries have more citizens than tribesmen and idiots.

Others have so many idiots.

NOTE WELL

A tribesman can become a citizen through orientation.

And an idiot can become a citizen by training and constant enforcement of the law.

But things fall apart if you elect an idiot or tribesman to lead you if he has not been reformed.

Where do you belong?

What they Didn't tell us about Entrepreneurship

The only part they told us about entrepreneurship was that we would be our own bosses.

They never told us that we would fail many times before we succeed.

They never told us that we would work 5 times more than our employees and not get anything sometimes.

They never told us that this would cripple our credit score. That we will be in debt and owe a lot of people money.

No one said anything about the sleepless nights trying to figure out a way forward.

No one told us about the stress and anxiety.

No one told us that this will cause conflict between us and or relatives and family members.

No one told us that we would be jokes to the society especially when we start changing from one business to another.

No one told us that sometimes we will go six months or more without any income. Living in the edge and surviving through borrowing money from different people.

No one told us that our doors would be shut down due failure to pay staff, they can’t get to work.

No one told us we would be hobos at some point.

No one told us that our wife's /husbands /boyfriends and girlfriend's would leave us because they will not understand our journey.

No one told us that we will have to be more than patient.

That we would make so many mistakes end up losing a lot of money.

That at some point we would have to risk our lives in order to move forward.

We had to figure this out all by ourselves.

Many gave up on the journey.

Some died on the journey.

But some of us after going through so much pain we decided that we were going to succeed or die trying .

Some of us we are never giving up on this no matter what. We are now doing it and very aware of the circumstances.

It's win or nothing for us and it's too late to go back now.

Have You Noticed that even in School… not all of us in the same Class were of the same age? Did you still Notice that others were Younger than we were… yet sometimes performed better than we did?

Have You even Noticed that there were Others who were Poor Yet always First and Others who Paid their Fees First and… were still last?

Have You Noticed that some of Your Mates in High School wrote ‘Nov/Dec’ Exams and entered University earlier than You did… but eventually You got a Job before some did?

Have You even Noticed that some of Your Friends with whom You had good Jobs died before 30… the same age others actually had a good Job?

Have You Noticed that Others had their dream Jobs at 40… the same age others were laid off?

Well…have You Noticed that some Friends married at 25 and divorced at 25 and half while others married at 35 and are still married even at 60?

Have You Noticed that Others gave birth at 22, right after Marriage… and ever since haven’t given birth again… while Others gave birth to Triplets at 45?

Have You Noticed that someone who had been single at age 30, got married after just months of dating while others who have dated since age 15 still have no glimpse of a wedding even at age 49 and half?

Have You Noticed that someone became a Superstar at 12 and before 40 died a shameful death of drug abuse while another ‘ordinary’ man died of old age at 93 and quarter?

Have You even Noticed that someone drives the latest four-wheeler and has a Mansion Yet has no place to call a Home while another man lives on the Street which he excitedly calls his Home after feeding on crumbs? Have You even Noticed that some Kids have all the latest Gadgets at Home Yet know no happiness while others in slums know the Secrets of Happiness no one knows?

Have You still Noticed that Others who were born into Royalty ended up living like Slaves while those who were born as Slaves ended up living in Majesty? Have you taken time to notice?

Have You even taken Note of the fact that some Students become Professors when their Lecturers are still Doctorate Degree Holders?

Have You Noticed that the First sometimes become Last… and the one close to Last indeed becomes first?

Have You Noticed that a Student who was Pronounced ‘Dead On Arrival’ in Class became Albert Einstein while the best in that Class was never heard of?

Have You Noticed that sometimes the best Teams don’t win when they should… and the worst Teams don’t lose when they should?

Have You Noticed that the best Players don’t necessarily become the best Coaches… and the best Coaches sometimes can’t even kick a Ball!?

I remember 1999 vividly, I remember Eagle Square and what happened there on the 29th of May, 1999. 20 years after, so many things have happened.

From Eagle Square where power changed hands in 1999, I have seen many who were present on that day but today, have been forgotten in idle permanent homes of their graves.

I remember how Nelson Mandela walked into the venue and the ovation that followed and with my same eyes I saw him in a casket.

In my eyes Stella Obasanjo rose to affluence and influence and with my eyes I saw her being driven out of power in a casket.

In my eyes Desire Kabilla who was also at Eagle Square fell to the bullets of his bodyguard in DR Congo. A former minister of Health, Prof Ransome Kuti was buried.

In my eyes Chuba Okadigbo rose, fell and died. Abubakar Rimi and Alex Ekwueme who contested a Presidential primaries with incumbent Obasanjo in 2003 at the same Eagle Square had their funerals organized.

In my eyes, "almighty" Tony Anenih called Mr Fix it, laid in-state helplessly in Benin as he couldn't fix death. Prof Dora Akunyili, the strong woman who was everywhere, fell on a street of India.

In my eyes, "Evil Genius" begin to wear canvass on an agbada on a wheelchair in Minna as he watches life without his once powerful wife, Maryam.

In my eyes Edwin Ume Ezeoke was buried, Gen. Victor Malu's obituary was in the news.

In my eyes, a Sultan fell from the sky, the remains of the owner of Bolingo Hotel was seen at Lisa village.

In my eyes Bola Ige fell, Suntai crashed and died, once landlords of Plateau and Taraba, Dariye and Nyame walked into prisons.

In my eyes, almighty Olabode George went and came out of prisons. Justice Salami heard the news of the death of Justice Katsina Alu. Before me, I saw powerful James Ibori who financed Yaradua's presidential election run like a coward to Dubai where he was extradited and jailed in UK.

In my eyes, a Landlord fell in Kwara and a strongman won election in Kogi but never lived to hear his victory announcement.

In my eyes, Azazi reigned and fell, Yakowa never lived to tell a story. Oronto Douglas who was once a powerful man behind the throne was buried.

In my eyes, Yar'adua came and fizzled out of power like two of his ministers.

In my eyes, I Fejiro Oliver saw the strongman of Ibadan politics, Adedibu, who removed a whole sitting governor and made Obasanjo to come same afternoon for peacemaking, rolled in a mat to the grave 

In my eyes, I saw Tompolo who was powerful under Goodluck Jonathan, demystified and chased into hiding never to return under Buhari.

In my eyes, Solomon Lar that sat that day as PDP Chairman, a symbol of power and affluence was buried on a plateau.

In my eyes, tested Bukola Saraki could not win his reelection and now hunted with his properties seized. This was a two time governor and number three man in Nigeria as Senate President now powerless. 

While still alive, newspapers carried how once powerful men like Olisa Metuh, Dasuki all turned into vegetables by EFCC.

In my eyes, I saw strong men rise and fall very cheaply. If this writeup should teach us anything, let it be known that power is transient. God gives who he wants to give. He says "I will have mercy on who I want to have mercy on".

To those of you today in power, where would you be in the next twenty years?

In 2039 when names like Buhari, Atiku, Amaechi, Wike, Saraki, Ekweremadu, Tambuwal, Mark, Dave, Onu are mentioned what would that child write about them then?

As we approach life, have it in mind that POLITICAL POWER IS NOT PERMANENT. THIS SAME POWER HAS CONSUMED MEN, DESTROYED MARRIAGES, CUT SHORT DREAMS, ENDED RELATIONSHIPS, BETRAYED TRUSTS AND KILLED FELLOW HUMANS... Is it worth dying for?

One day a mentally troubled child came home and gave a letter to his mother.

He told her,

“My teacher gave this letter to me and told me to only give it to my mother.”

The message written on the letter was,

Thomas Edison then realized what his mother did, which probably saved his life and future.

For several hours he sat motionless with tears streaming down his face.

She asked a question in a general group on WhatsApp.
I responded to the question professionally.

She tagged my response and typed: "you're an idiot"

I replied: "Thanks so much, now that you point my attention to this idiotic part of me, I'll surely work on it, God bless you my dear..."

And the whole place shook. Over 118 people commented and were so surprised by my response. Of course she was terribly bashed to the extent that she left the group.

An hour later she called me to apologise for her stupidity bla bla bla.
We became friends.

Then I ended up handling her premarital counselling sessions.

Two days ago, on my birthday, she and her husband gave me a gift worth over 1.2million Naira.
This was a year after she called me an idiot.

Life Lessons from this experience.

1. MATURITY: Your reaction to negative feedbacks or situations shows how mature you are.

2. CHOICE: You have the power of choice whenever anybody does or says anything offensive to you.

3. SELF CONTROL: If someone calls you anything negative and you lose yourself and begin to fight or shout or do anything terrible, you only prove them right.

4. SILENCE IS GOLDEN: It is better to keep quiet and people think you're a fool than for you to open your mouth and they confirm you're truly a fool.

5. DISCERNMENT: You cannot because the baby pooed in his bath throw the baby away with the bath water.

6. POSITIVE POWER: You have the power to win people through your maturity and composure and not through overly being more sanctimonious than the person.

7. POSITIVE IMPACT: Life is all about people. If I had responded to her negatively, I would have lost a friend forever.

8. WISDOM: There are people who are sent to you by God to help your journey in life to be worthwhile, your meeting point might be at a fighting point. Be wise, even when you're angry.

9. HUMILITY: She was humble enough to call and she apologized.

10. RECONCILIATION: Maybe there's someone you need to reconcile with today also, go ahead and do just that.

Finding Happiness

A group of 50 people attended a seminar. Suddenly the speaker stopped and started giving each person a Balloon. Each one was asked to write his/her name on it using a marker.
Then all the Balloons were collected and put in another room. Now these Delegates were let into that room and asked to find the balloon which had their respective names written on within 5 minutes. Everyone was frantically searching for their names, pushing and colliding with each other, and there was utter Chaos. At the end of 5 minutes, No One could find their own Balloons.

Now each one was asked to Randomly Collect a Balloon and Give It to the Person whose Name was written on it. Within minutes, Everyone had their own Balloons. The Speaker began:
This is exactly what is happening, in our lives. Everyone is frantically looking for happiness, all over the place, not knowing where it is. Our Happiness Lies in the Happiness of Other People. THE LION WHO THOUGHT HE WAS A SHEEP

There was a lion that grew up in a flock of sheep and so he had no consciousness that he was a lion. He didn’t know he was a lion. He would bleat like a sheep, he’d eat grass like a sheep. One day they were wandering at the edge of a big jungle when a mighty lion let out a big roar and leaped out of the forest and right into the middle of the flock. All the sheep scattered and ran away. Imagine the surprise of the jungle lion when he saw this other lion there among the sheep. So, he gave chase. He got hold of him. And there was this lion, cringing in front of the king of the jungle. And the jungle lion said to him, “What are you doing here?”

And the other lion said, “Have mercy on me. Don’t eat me. Have mercy on me.” But the king of the forest dragged him away saying “Come on with me.” And he took him to a lake and he said, “Look.” So, the lion who thought he was a sheep looked and for the first time he saw his reflection. He saw his image. Then he looked at the jungle lion, and he looked in the water again, and he let out a mighty roar. He was never a sheep again. It took only one minute.

Some Social Rules That Will help you Look Professional

Social skills are the skills we use to communicate and interact with each other, both verbally and non-verbally, through gestures, body language and our personal appearance. Human beings are sociable creatures and we have developed many ways to communicate our messages, thoughts and feelings with others.

1. Don’t call someone more than twice continuously. If they don’t pick up your call that means they have something more important to attend to.

2. Return money that you have borrowed even before the other person remembers lending it to you. It shows your integrity and character. Same goes with umbrellas, pens and lunch boxes.

3. Never order the expensive dish on the menu when someone is treating you for lunch/dinner. If possible ask them to order their choice of food for you.

4. Don’t ask awkward questions like ‘Oh so you aren’t married yet?’ Or ‘Don’t you have kids’ or ‘Why didn’t you buy a house?’ For god’s sake it isn’t your problem.

5. Always open the door for the person coming behind you. Doesn’t matter if it is a guy or a girl. You don’t grow small by treating someone well in public.

6. If you take a taxi with a friend, and he/she pays now, you pay next time.

7. Respect different political opinions.

8. Never interrupt people talking.

9. If you tease someone, and they don’t seem to enjoy it, stop it and never do it again.

10. Say “thank you” when someone is helping you.

11. Praise publicly. Criticize privately.

12. There’s almost never a reason to comment on someone’s weight. Just say, “You look fantastic.” If they want to talk about losing weight, they will.

13. When someone shows you a photo on their phone, don’t swipe left or right. You never know what’s next.

14. If a colleague tells you they have a doctors appointment, don’t ask what it’s for, just say hope you’re ok. If they want to talk about it they will and you don’t put them in the uncomfortable position of having to tell you their personal illness.

15. Treat the cleaner with the same respect as the CEO. Nobody is impressed at how rudely you can treat someone below you but people will notice if you treat them with respect.

16. If a person is speaking directly to you, staring at your phone is rude.

17. Never give advice until you’re asked

18. When meeting someone after a long time, unless they want to talk about it, don’t ask them their age and salary.

19. Mind your own business unless anything involves you directly — just stay out of it.

20. Take off your sunglasses if you are talking to anyone in the street. It is a sign of respect and more eye contact is as important as your speech.

A teacher teaching Maths to a six-year-old asked him, “If I give you one apple and one apple & one apple, how many apples will you have?”

With a few seconds the boy replied confidently, “Four!”

The dismayed teacher was expecting an effortless correct answer (three).

She was disappointed. “May be the child did not listen properly,” she thought.

She repeated, “pls listen carefully.

It is very simple. You will be able to do it right if you listen carefully.

If I give you one apple and one apple and one apple, how many apples will you have?”

The boy had seen the disappointment on his teacher’s face.

He calculated again on his fingers.

But within him he was also searching for the answer that will make his teacher happy.

This time hesitatingly he replied, “Four...”

The disappointment stayed on teacher’s face.

She remembered that the boy loves strawberries.

She thought maybe he doesn’t like apples and that is making him lose focus.

This time with exaggerated excitement & twinkling eyes she asked ...

“If I give you one strawberry & one strawberry & one strawberry, then how many will you have?”

Seeing the teacher happy, the young boy calculated on his fingers again.

There was no pressure on him, but a little on the teacher.

She wanted her new approach to succeed.

With a hesitating smile, the young boy replied, “Three?”

The teacher now had a victorious smile. Her approach had succeeded.

She wanted to congratulate herself.

But one last thing remained.

Once again she asked him, “Now if I give you one apple and one apple and one more apple how many will you have?”

Promptly the answer was “Four!”

The teacher was aghast.

“How.... tell me, How?” she demanded in a little stern and irritated voice.

In a voice that was low and hesitating young boy replied, “Because I already have one apple in my bag.”

Lessons to Learn: When someone gives you an answer that is different from what you are expecting, it is not necessarily they are wrong.

There may be an angle that we may not have understood at all.

We need to learn to appreciate and understand different perspectives.

Quite often, we try and impose our perspectives on others and then wonder what went wrong.

The next time someone gives you a different perspective than yours, sit down and gently ask " can you please help me understand"?......

Father to Son lesson on Asset vs Liability

This conversation ensued between a dad and his son:

Son: Dad, may I speak with you?
Dad: Go ahead.
Son: Among all my classmates, I am the only one without a car. It is embarrassing.
Dad: What do you want me to do?
Son: I need a car. I don't want to feel odd.
Dad: Do you have a particular car in mind?
Son: Yes dad (smiling)
Dad: How much?
Son:$2000
Dad: I will give you the money on one condition.
Son: What is the condition?
Dad: You will not use the money to buy a car but invest it. If you make enough profit from the investment, you can go ahead and buy the car.
Son: Deal.

Then, the father gave him a cheque of $2000. The son cashed the cheque and invested it in obedience to the verbal agreement that he had with his father.

Some months later, the father asked the son how he was faring. The son responded that his business was improving. The father left him.

After some months again, the father asked him about his business
again and the son told him that he is making a lot of profit from the business.

When it was exactly a year after he gave him the money, the father asked him to show him how far the business has gone. The son readily agreed and the following discussion took place:

Dad: From this I can see that you have made a lot of money.
Son: _Yes dad. _
Dad: Do you still remember our agreement?
Son: Yes
Dad: What is it?
Son: We agreed that I should invest the money and buy the car from the profit.
Dad: Why have you not bought the car?
Son: I don't need the car again. I want to invest more.
Dad: Good. You have learnt the lessons that I wanted to teach you.
- You didn't really need the car, you just wanted to feel among. That would have placed extra financial obligations on you. It wasn't an asset then; but a liability.
- Two, it is very important for you to invest in your future before living like a king.
Son: Thanks dad.

Then the father gave him the keys of the latest model of that car parked somewhere in the compound.

MORALS:
1. Always invest first before you start living the way you want.

2. What you see as a need now may become a want if you can take a little time to get over your feelings.

3. Try to be able to distinguish between an asset and a liability so that what you see as an asset today will not become a liability to you tomorrow.

The Story of the Millionaire that Parked his Rolls Royce

Mr Singh walks into a bank London and asks for the loan officer. He says he's going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow £5000. The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so Mr Singh hands over the keys and keyholder to a new Rolls Royce, which costs quarter of a million pounds.

“The car is parked on the street in front of the bank,” says Mr Singh, “and I have all the necessary papers.”

The bank officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. After Mr Singh leaves, the loan officer, the bank's president and all their colleagues enjoy a good laugh at the man for using a £250,000 Rolls Royce as collateral against a £5,000 loan.

One of the employees drives the Rolls into the bank's underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, Mr Singh returns, repays the £5000 and the interest, which comes to £15.41.

The loan officer says, "Sir, I must tell you, we’re all a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and discovered that you’re a multimillionaire. Why would you bother to borrow £5,000?"

The man replies, "Where else in London can I park my car for two weeks for only £15.41?"

Nigeria: The Faith - Action Disconnect

Nigeria ranked the most prayerful country on earth and most sinful.
Nigeria has more Catholic Knights than Italy.
Nigeria has more Anglican Knights than England.
Nigeria has more Alhajis than all Arab countries combined.
This is not entirely bad.
Ironically, this our religiosity does not reflect in the religious and moral fabric of the nation!

Each year, we budget billions of Naira sending our people on pilgrimages to Mecca and Jerusalem to pray.

We pray for development.
We pray for long life and good health.
We pray against sudden death.
We pray against accident of any kind.
We pray for employment.
We pray for peace.
Above all, we pray to make heaven!

In the year of the Lord Two thousand and eighteen (2018), we will spend 250 Billion Naira to sponsor pilgrims to pray for the development of Nigeria among others.

250 billion Naira can build 250 model schools.
250 Billion can build 100 modern Health centres.
250 billion can immunize all children in Nigeria.
250 Billion can build 250 brand new roads.
250 Billion can build 1000 new housing estates.
250 billion can create 100,000 new jobs.

We choose not to do any of these.
Rather,
We choose to spend that amount to go pray for development!

We choose not to spend that amount to take care of our health, Rather, we choose to spend it to go and pray for our health!

We choose not to spend that amount to build schools and train our children to be wise, we choose to use it to go and pray for wisdom!

We choose not to spend that amount to build good roads to avoid and reduce car accidents, we choose to spend it to pray against accidents.

These are our choices. We will live with them.

Close your eyes and imagine!

How much resources have we spent over these years to pray instead of using them to develop our country??

There is nothing wrong going on pilgrimage to pray and seek the face of God. But, it should be entirely a private affair!!!

Solutions to man’s problems, be they natural or man-made, demand more than cries of men and women whose hands are lazy and brains are laid back, towards heaven. Unfortunately, the invocation of the powers of the divine to solve what are evidently human problems is a near default indulgence of the vast majority of Nigerians. However, that is not to suggest that prayers are not efficacious or that miracles do not exist. That would be totally foolhardy because prayers actually do work, miracles do exist and God still intervenes in the affairs of men.

If you want to save, whenever you receive money, don’t start spending hoping that you’ll save what remains. Normally what remains is zero because as long as money to spend is available, the numerous things you can spend it on are also available. And things to spend on even incite their 'relatives' so that you spend even more than you had planned. When money to spend is not available, we naturally find a way of doing without it. That's why I've learnt to save with an INVESTMENT CLUB. Once I send money there I assume I no longer have it. Before you spend any money, put your savings aside then spend what is left after saving.

When you get an opportunity to meet a very wealthy person, never ask for money. Ask for ideas on how to make money. They may even choose to give you money on their own after seeing that your ideas are great, but let getting money from them never be your objective.

Keeping your seed instead of planting it. Many people stop at saving. It's very, very difficult to save and have all you need to maintain your lifestyle especially after retirement. When you save, your savings are seed; plant it. When you just keep the seed (saving money) some seeds begin to die (eaten by inflation and the like). That's why I recommend that you read about the different types of investment vehicles you can use to grow your savings. Money Mistake 6
Never lend someone money you are not willing to lose. By the time you lend someone money, be contented in your heart that should the person fail to pay, you will not die. You should not even lose that person's friendship if they fail to repay the money you lent them. If you feel the person might fail to pay you and this will not affect your relationship with them, then lend them money. If their failure to pay would make you hate this person’s entire clan, please advise the person to go to the bank.

Money Mistake 7
Never append your signature to guarantee someone on a financial matter if you are not willing or able to pay the money on their behalf. Do I have to explain that one? No, it's self-explanatory.

Money Mistake 8
Avoid keeping money you don't intend to use in the short-term within easy reach. For instance, don’t walk with #100K in your pocket when all you plan to do in a day costs #20K. Like I mentioned in Money Mistake 3, there are always expenses available to gobble any money that is within reach, so if you don't want to lose it, put it away in a safe place.

Money Mistake 9
Avoid keeping money in inappropriate places e.g. in socks, under the pillow, in a pit, in the sitting room, in the bra, in a travel bag that you will place somewhere in a bus ... impulse buying is a devil that will keep you busy!

Money Mistake 10
Spending money on an item that you can do without (at least for the time being). These days when I pick money from my pocket or wallet, before paying for something I ask myself: What would happen if I didn’t buy this? If I find I can live with the consequences of not having that thing, I smile and walk away.

Money Mistake 11
Paying an amount for something that's not the minimum you can get that same value for. In other words, if you are along east Legon road and you pay #5K for a shoe that you can get at #3K at Makola market, that's a money mistake except for those who have achieved financial freedom.

Money Mistake 12:
Consistently spending all you earn or more than you earn. It's like having a drum where you have an inlet that's smaller than the outlet. It will never get full. And should the inlet ever reduce significantly the drum will run dry. If you do it the other way round and the inlet is bigger, it will get full and even overflow. Hence, we have to always ensure we are widening the inlet while narrowing the outlet – all the time. Your side hustle comes in handy!

Money Mistake 13:
Thinking about short-term only and forgetting about long-term or thinking about the long-term and forgetting about the short-term. For instance, Lydia was told that there's money in land. She saved money over a long period of time and bought 30 acres of land. Now she has the land but she is always broke. She is always complaining. She's disgruntled and she doesn't seem to see herself earning from the land in the near future. Now, let's ask ourselves: Having 30 acres of land and no money to feed your family or take a child to hospital, is that wealth or poverty? I think Lydia only looked at long-term needs and forgot that she has short-term needs that require money. What of those who find they are one paycheck away from salary? Are they thinking about the long-term needs?
