In doing some research for an article years ago, I came across an excerpt from John C. Maxwell's book, "Developing the Leader Within You". Maxwell tells a story he read in a Norman Vincent Peale book where Peale was walking through the twisted streets of Kowloon in Hong Kong and came upon a tattoo studio. In the window were samples of tattoos available where you had an unlimited amount of choices. One of those choices was a tattoo that read "Born to Lose". He walked into the shop, in astonishment, and pointing to those words, asked the Chinese tattoo artist, "Does anyone really have that terrible phrase, Born to Lose, tattooed on his body?"
He replied, "Yes, sometimes."
"But, I said, I just can't believe that anyone in his right mind would do that. The Chinese man simply tapped his forehead and in broken English said, Before tattoo on body, tattoo on mind."
Never were so few words so powerful. The mind plays an important role in everyone's success.
If you're like many self-employed business owners, you have probably experienced the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. At times, you might even have caught yourself buying into the doom and gloom.
Despite daily challenges, successful entrepreneurs arm themselves by practicing certain tactics to keep their mind and mindset consistently sharp. These are the same elements that have and continue to work for my clients and me for years:
Assume PAAR - Power, Accountability, Authority and Responsibility over the results you want to achieve and the life you want to lead. Successful entrepreneurs don't wait for things to fall on their lap. They take a proactive approach and do what it takes to achieve their outcomes. At times, entrepreneurs give away their personal power with self-limiting thoughts or attitudes. They quit thinking of alternative ways to achieve success. Entrepreneurs who embrace PAAR create solutions for each challenge.
Take a step ahead in spite of fear. Successful entrepreneurs take a proactive approach, don't stop at small thinking, and are willing to stretch what is possible even if they are uncomfortable. When fear appears, they don't say, "I don't have (fill in the blank)." They create a plan and work the plan. They step ahead in spite of the fear.
Invest in Themselves. There is a major difference between ambitious entrepreneurs and ones that struggle. Successful entrepreneurs invest in themselves. They take chances when others don't and they seek out resources rather than needlessly reinventing the wheel. They realize that their mindset is critical to their success and they continuously feed it to improve it.
Adopt a Commitment Approach. Winning entrepreneurs have a commitment approach. They see a solution and they implement the solution. They fully follow through and do what they say they are going to do.
There's a story that illustrates these fundamental tools in action. In the book, The Relationship Edge in Business, best-selling author Jerry Acuff shares a story of Mike Accardi who opened up a restaurant only to have it fail. He walked away from the business, moved with his wife and daughter from Tennessee to Louisiana where he went to school, quit school, and was extremely poor. As Mike describes it, "I was kind of in the midst of an identity crisis." He took a clerk job, punched the clock daily, and settled into a boring routine. One evening he went to the store to pick up a prescription for his daughter and, while waiting in line, looked at a small rack of books on the counter and one caught his eye. It said "You can have anything you want." It was The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. The book was 95 cents. He didn't have the money to purchase it after buying the medicine. So he went home, collected all of the returnable bottles in his house, went back to the drug store to cash them in, and bought the book. He found a way to invest in himself.
He consumed every word in the book. He read the book again, a third time, wrote an outline and started to get excited. He tells others that what he got most from the book is that you have to know what you want, write it down and put a time limit on it. At one point, he excitedly told his wife that he made a list of goals: a house, two new cars, property and, he said, he would have all of this in five years. Just five years...
His wife laughed, exclaiming that he wasn't making enough to buy groceries. He decided to draw up a plan for his discretionary items and didn't deviate from his plan. He made a commitment that he was going to have everything on his list. When they decided to move back to Memphis where their families were living, they discovered a second child was on the way. At night he worked in his uncle's liquor store while he spent the days looking for a career.
Each day, he checked his list and took the next step. It took six months to find a job where he became a full-time commissioned sales person. Within two years, he was top five out of 42 salesmen where he stayed in the top five for the last 27 years. But he didn't get everything on his list in five years. Within just 3 1/2 years, he had everything on his list.
Successful entrepreneurs realize they must do things differently. When you are committed, you control your income and your outcomes by the choices and actions you choose to take.
Consider this assignment to help accelerate your results:
Notice if you're blaming others (or the economy) and identify your responsibility for your outcomes. Change up the way you react to situations and look for alternative solutions. Fully implement those solutions.
Invest in yourself. Whether it is reading a self improvement book each day, attending a workshop, or improving your knowledge base, feed your mind and invest in yourself. An investment in you is an investment in your business, your clients, your relationships and your life.
Show up. Eighty percent of success is about showing up. Make a list on how you are (or are not) showing up in your business each day. Do you get distracted playing solitaire on the computer during the day or take too many personal phone calls? Set boundaries for yourself and others and/or reshape the way you work so you're fully present.
A minimum of each quarter, revisit this assignment and check your progress. Often times it only takes a little shift in any one of these areas to start changing your results.

Americans Guess Over Half Of Federal Tax Dollars Are Wasted: Gallup

Never in recorded history have Americans been more distrustful of how the U.S. government spends its money.
According to a new Gallup poll, Americans on average say that the federal government wastes 51 cents of every tax dollar, the highest level ever recorded since the poll was first taken in 1979. It's also the first time that those surveyed on average said a majority of federal government money was wasted.
The poll results, based on a survey of over a thousand adults in early September, were released out the same day as President Barack Obama announced a plan to reduce the federal deficit through $1.5 trillion in tax hikes aimed at the country's wealthier citizens.
Republicans have criticized the plan, arguing for cuts in federal spending over tax increases. Obama officials are confident nonetheless that the added tax dollars can help the American economy. On Monday, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner defended the tax increases on Bloomberg television as a viable means to sustain short-term growth.
But convincing Republicans won't be easy. Indeed, 95 percent of Republicans in Congress have signed a pledge known as the "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" to "oppose any and all tax increases," according to The Miami Herald.
Despite the divide in congress, Gallup's poll on predicted government waste doesn't divide so firmly down party lines. On average, Republicans say that the government wasted 52 cents of every dollar. Democrats aren't far behind, they themselves guessing 47 cents is wasted.
The poll results reinforce earlier surveys that found Americans place a greater degree of trust in state and local governments than they do the federal government. Those surveyed said that state and local governments waste only 42 cents and 38 cents, respectively.

Perhaps affecting the results is a gloomier view of the economy more generally. Overall, Americans are more pessimistic about the economy than they were in July, and it's now the wealthy that are possess the gloomiest view of all, another recent Gallup poll found.

A Quite Decent Proposal

This week I've learned two things. One that keeping bagels in the freezer means you get ice cubes with sesame seeds in. The second is that men have an uncanny knack of sensing when another male is sniffing round their territory.

I've been insanely busy - thankfully far too occupied to dwell upon the beau's continued absence. On Tuesday I went to the launch of a swanky new menswear shop opposite Claridges. Some tailor I've never heard of that makes flashy suits for the likes of Daniel Craig, and, erm, Ant and Dec. In fact all three of them had been touted as 'confirmed guests', but seemingly sent Patrick Kielty and the bloke from Coupling, who gets his arse out a lot, in their place. I wasted ten minutes of my valuable time trying to talk to a hot young British actor who was standing outside. Sadly he was so out of it he couldn't actually enunciate and just kept opening and shutting his mouth while his eyes rolled back in his head. Not that impressive.

On Thursday it was off to a lipstick party at Battersea Power station where Kate Moss flew in by helicopter and we all lined up to ogle her as she entered the venue, like at a bad wedding. She walked by so fast it was like she on castors, then was whisked to the VIP section surrounded by her slightly ghastly entourage. It was a bit of an anticlimax and I left soon after, ripping my feet to shreds in 7 inch glitter platforms, unable to find an actual road, let alone a cab.

I got home and was feeling rather low when my phone buzzed with a text. Unknown number.

Slight feeling of dread.
'Darling, how are you?'
'Darling WHO are you?' was my reply.

My jaw dropped when I realised it was Andy, a man I had a bit of a 'thing' with a couple of years ago, after meeting him at a terrible bar in the City. (It sounds like I spend all my time in the square mile preying on rich suits but I assure you it's a twice-yearly occurence at most.)
He was terribly charming and handsome - which led him to aquiring not only a wife and children but also a mistress whom he coyly referred to as his 'girlfriend'. Now it appeared he wanted to add me to the jolly hareem. I applauded his honestly (but not his decision to sport garish red braces). I wasn't convinced at first. My friend was in hysterics as she watched him trying to nuzzle my neck seductively.

'He was doing his best sexy moves' she recalls, 'and you just looked bored out of your head whilst flipping over his tie to see where it was from.'

He won me over in the end and we had a lukewarm affair for several months; he'd ring me furtively from the bottom of the garden at his weekend home in the Cotswolds and turn up at my flat at ridiculous hours of the night whenever he had a window in his schedule or a watertight excuse. It only really continued because I was on the rebound following a messy split from hateful man, and because he always brought me lovely baubles, mainly from Louis Vuitton where I'm sure he got a discount for buying three of everything.

It had petered out to nothing and I'd deleted him from my past, but now this. He was clearly drunk.

'I'm so fond of you' he texted. God I HATE the F-word.

'You were always the one who made me laugh. And all those extraordinary shoes...'

I wasn't in the mood for rose-tinted reminiscing so asked him to cut to the chase.

Turns out he sold the London pied a terre; wifey probably sussed that it was his Zone 1 shag pad. So he now stays at hotels when he's in town.

'I have the penthouse at the Sanderson on Tuesday night' he taunted, 'Be lovely to see you again.'

I'm very familiar with said room - and I really don't like it. Due to building regulations they aren't allowed to divide it up with actual walls so there are green curtains all up and down it, lending it the cold air of a gynaecological ward. And who wants to pee - or worse - wth only a curtain for modesty? Least sexy hotel ever in my opinion, but he loves it for some reason.
I'm non committal, as every fibre of my rational being screams DON'T GO THERE. But I'd be lying if I said the idea of a no-strings five star hotel tryst didn't pique my interest just a little.
I slipped off to sleep and had an unsettling dream about smear tests.

The next morning I debated it all the way to work and when I got there I opened up my email. Of course there was one from the beau after a week's abscence.

'Ive been as busy as a one-legged arse kicker' it read, and I took this to be as near as an apology as I would ever get. He's been taken out every night recently by various people who want to employ him after he quit his current job. How terribly arduous for him. No mention of taking ME out however. And he's away all weekend again. The hotel offers keeps buzzing round my head. Should I? COULD I?

I still haven't made up my mind.

‘Man Flu' Is Not A Myth

Women may joke about 'man flu' but according to new research men really do suffer more when they have a cold.
The study found that females have around twice as many white blood cells as males making the female immune system more effective at fighting off infections than the male system.
So when a man rushes to his bed at the first sniff of a cold he may not be faking it, after all.
Scientists at Queen Mary University of London infected mice and rats with a variety of infections to study their immune systems. They looked at white blood cells in the lungs and stomach, which defend the body against infection.
Dr Ramona Scotland, who led the research, said: “We found that the females had around twice as many white blood cells than males which was a huge surprise.”
“When we started to look at how these white blood cells behaved we found that not only were there more cells, but that the cells were more responsive to bacteria and other invaders – and that they worked more effectively.
“Crucially, they didn’t release as many of the chemicals that stimulate the immune system response. It’s the release of these mediators that makes you feel lousy when you’re fighting off an infection.”
The research, which was reported in the medical journal, Blood, found that for every infection tested, the female mice and rats were less sick than the male.
Dr Scotland concluded: “I believe that the same will be true for people because this is a very ancient part of the mammal’s immune response."
“Man flu is a bit of a joke but from what I’m seeing there is a real difference,” she added.

A huge earning is usually considered for measuring the wealth of someone. However, why do so many people with huge income frequently end up running out of money in the middle or at the end of the month? What is the problem? "Okay", Anto thought, "one shirt and a pair of pants for this month. The rest of my salary would be used for transportation and food until the end of the month" . What happened? On the 24th of the next month, just three days before his second-month payday, he had only Rp 50,000 left. Anto started thinking. The key here is not how much money you make, but how you manage your income so that it can be stretched in a one-month period. There is no fixed way on the right method to manage your finance. However, based from experiences, there are several things that can help you manage your finance well each month: 1. Plan your income and outcome every month. 2. Carry out the plan strictly. 3.
