We have welcomed a record amount of guests to Assateague Island, made tons of new friends, and have seen lots of rare and interesting critters. Our tours are not just kayak tours. They are a complete full service, hands on, interpretive experience that brings our guests closer to nature. During recent tours we have been coming in contact with some new creatures like the Striped Burrfish which is closely related to the Northern Puffer but has burr like spines all over it's body. Also the elusive Pipe Fish which calls the Eel Grass beds of the Sinepuxent Bay home. They are cousins of the Sea Horse, inhabit the same home range and feed on small fish and crustaceans.
Our seine nets have also been catching several fish that we usually don't see. We've caught King Fish, Croaker, White Croaker, Weak Fish, and Spot. All of which use the Sinepuxent Bay as a safe place to grow up. As they grow they will make their way into the deeper portions of the bay and into the Atlantic Ocean. These fish play an important role not only in the coastal bays of the Eastern Shore but in the coastal feeding grounds of the Atlantic Ocean.
Of course we have been seeing many of the famous Assateague Wild Horses. They have been very active in the back bays and guts that we paddle. You can see some of what we see and do during our tours on our Facebook page. We constantly post new photos of the animals we see and the experiences we have. It is a glimpse into the amazing world of SuperFun Eco Tours. If you want to see more then a glimpse give us a call at 410-656-9453 to schedule a tour.

Best June Ever!!!

We need to thank everyone who came out for a tour this June! It was one of our busiest months ever and it is you the SuperFun guest that makes our tours SUPERFUN. Assateauge Island is home to many amazing creatures and an eco system that is one of the most productive in the world. We think it is important to preserve and interact with our wild areas all over America. By coming out for a SuperFun Eco Tour you are helping to promote a better understanding of local eco systems and stewardship. We strive to give our guests a one of kind interpretive experience that helps connect them to the awesome eco system that is Assateague Island National Seashore.
This past month we have encountered lots of wildlife like, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Mummichogs, Killifish, Atlantic Silversides, Bay Anchovies, Wild Horses, and the Maryland Blue Crab. We have also seen a River Otter on two separate occasions. The River Otter is a very elusive creature that is on the top of the food chain. They are social hunters that specialize in eating everything that lives on and around Assateague Island. It was luck that two different tours got to see this interesting creature. We only hope to see more as we continue to do tours on Assateague.
Here at SuperFun it is our goal to provide every guest with a interactive experience that builds respect, understanding, and interest in the wild areas around us. We do that by engaging participants through hands on activities that highlight everything the island has to offer. If you are interested in joining us on a tour please give us a call at 410-656-9453.

An Absolutely Amazing Couple of Weeks!

The last couple of weeks have been great on Assateague Island!! Our eco friendly lifestyle permeates through every aspect of our business and personal lives. We recently volunteered during the Take Pride in Berlin cleanup event and have participated in cleanups on Ocean City and Assateague Island. We also have an extensive recycling program that keeps the local recycling crew in Berlin very busy every Friday afternoon. We strive to turn our backyard into an interactive working eco system that provides a habitat for us and local wildlife. Our backyard is home to Cardinals, Robins, Blue Jays, Mocking Birds, Sparrows, Moles, Squirrels, Bats, Wrens, and three dogs of various sizes that are constantly wreaking havoc. For the last two years we have cultivated a garden that provides us and all the animals that live in our backyard a plethora of food. Recently we register the backyard as a certified wildlife habitat through the National Wildlife Federation!!
We love the outdoors. That is why we have taken our love for the local environment and incorporated it into what we do everyday. Our tours are based on the idea that we can enjoy recreation, education, conservation, adventure, exploration, and discovery in our public and private natural areas. It is important that we learn to live and thrive with the natural environments around us. Assateague Island is the perfect place to see this philosophy at work in the real world. Home to tons of wildlife Assateague also provides visitors with kayaking, boating, swimming, hiking, biking, fishing, crabbing, camping, clamming, photography, hunting, and guided programs like ours.

Vacationing on DELMARVA?

If you are vacationing on the Delmarva Peninsula this summer and want to explore Assateague Island, we are your best bet no matter where you are staying! We had a great year and owe all our success to every person who joined us for a trip, tour or rental. This year more people then ever came out to Assateague Island and experienced our brand of hands on eco tours. All of our participants were able to see and interact with the plethora of wildlife that call Assateague Island home. On average we led two full tours a day and every tour used a mixture of skill and luck to capture, interact with and release Blue Crabs, Mummichugs, Silversides, Grass Shrimp, Comb Jellies, Needle Fish, Moon Jellyfish, Sea Cucumbers and the elusive Horseshoe Crab. We also had a record number of large group trips come through the park with us this year and we would like to sincerely thank every participant who came out with us this summer!!
We would also like to thank all of our local partners! The Maryland Coastal Bays Program, Burley Oak Brewery, The Ocean City Chamber of Commerce, The Berlin Chamber of Commerce, The Harrison Hotel Group, Ayers Creek Adventures, The Paddle House Outfitters, Shockley's Market, Grow Berlin Green, The Globe Restaurant, Ocean City Recreation and Parks, Assateague Island State Park, and of coarse The Assateague Island National Seashore. All of these organizations strive to provide the local community with amazing opportunities to enjoy the local eco systems, cultures and communities. With out all of their help and support we would not be able to provide our customers with the high quality eco tours we offer throughout the summer months.

Even though we had a great year we will always strive to offer the best customer experience that we can. That means we are always looking for new trip and tour ideas. New for next year we will be offering our Burley Oak Beer tour which will highlight one of our newest partners, The Burley Oak Brewery. The tour will start with a kayak tour of Assateague Island and end at the brewery for a tasting and a tour. We are also working on an off season bus shuttle that will give the local community a chance to travel between Ocean City, Ocean Pines, and Berlin in style while cruising around in our superfun bus. Next year we will still be offering many of our most popular tours like our Sunset Tour, Fullmoon Tour, Sustainable Shellfishing Tour, and our most popular tour, the Discovery Tour.

Again, here at SuperFun we can not thank our friends, family, customers, partners and supporters enough for all the help and positive reinforcement. This has been an amazing experience so far and hope to have an amazing future filled with fun and success. We will be taking reservations for next year all winter long and can't wait to get next season started. If you would like to schedule a trip or tour for next year feel free to call us at 410-656-9453 or send us an email at superfunecotours@gmail.com.

Customer Appreciation Month and Our Ocean City Nature Clinic

Here at SuperFun September is CUSTOMER APPRECIATION MONTH! David is an Outdoor Recreation major at Ohio University and is apart of the ROTC program there. David came out to the eastern shore for 60 hours of field experience and he got it. He couldn't have came out at a better time because we had one of our best weeks ever!
David did everything from unloading/loading boats to sweeping trips and taking pictures. He was an awesome help when it came to multi-tour days and kept his cool when we were at our busiest. We can not thank David enough and we know that he will go on to be one of the many productive, successful, and responsible leaders in our army forces.

Now that David is gone and things are starting to slow down for the season we have to contend with hurricane Irene. She is currently making her way up the east coast and may hit the eastern shore. If that happens we will be prepared to finish our season out no matter what the outcome. Part of being an eco tourism company is having the ability to lead trips no matter what the current environmental situation.

If the National Seashore is closed due to any damage the hurricane causes we still have the ability to lead tours of the Sinepuxent Bay. So if after the storm the park is closed feel free to give us a call. We may be one of the only ways to get onto the island, by kayak!! You can always give us a call at 410-656-9453 or send us an email at superfunecotours@gmail.com

Tons of Tours and a New Contest!!!

This July was our busiest month to date and we need to thank all of you who have explored the marshes at Assateague Island National Seashore with us!!! Yesterday, April 4th was a perfect day for a nice lazy paddle. The temperature was in the upper sixties, almost no clouds in the sky, the water temperature was comfortable and the wind was out of control! Even though the wind was steadily blowing at about 25 mph we insisted on going out for a paddle. Luckily we used our expertise to navigate whitecaps that were constantly breaking over the bows of our boats.
Due to the shallowness of the Sinepuxent Bay even 15 mph winds can create a completely different kayaking experience. What were once still, glass like waters can turn into a frothy white mess of waves and wind. Usually high winds like this will force us to cancel our trips and tours but due to our stubbornness and need for adventure we pushed onward.

We paddled our normal Discovery Tour route stopping once to put on our rain gear then stopping a second time to pump all the water out of our boats. We then used the strong winds to push us toward the back side of Great Egging Island. We landed our kayaks and got out to dry off for a bit. We used this time to hike into the interior of Great Egging Island. This was a special treat because during the majority of the year Great Egging is a hot spot for blood sucking insects that make it impossible to explore the island.

After an hour of walking around, warming up and drying off we reluctantly re-entered our kayaks then the water. We were all happily surprised by how easy the return journey was. The 25mph winds pushed us toward Old Ferry Landing and made the last leg of our paddle fun and enjoyable. By the time we exited the water we were wet and exhausted but had an awesome time paddling the Sinepuxent Bay in weather that would scare most away.

We must insist that no one attempt to kayak in winds of 25mph unless you are a very experienced and prepared paddler. We are ACA certified and are always prepared with bilge pumps, rain gear, paddle floats, throw ropes, a first aid kit and paddling partners that would help in case of an emergency.

If any of you would like to experience the Sinepuxent Bay and Assateague Island National Seashore in calmer more navigable water please give us a call at 410-656-9453.

New partnership, new tours, new season

We are proud to announce that we have forged a new partnership and friendship with Burley Oak Brewery! Coming around the backside of Great Egging Island I realized the sun was winning the battle, but we soldiered on. By the time we got off the water I could feel the burn. As I expected I took on a little too much sun but it was worth it. Keep an eye out for us at Buck's Place on 611 and around the park in our bus.
DB

Thanks for checking out the SuperFun Blog. We are really excited to be involved in the Ocean City Blog Network.

For this first Blog we wanted to introduce ourselves to the community and also figure out how this thing works. SuperFun Eco Tours is a full service tour operator on Assateague Island National Seashore. We have a permit from the Park Service which allows us to bring our guests onto the Island to explore the natural wonders of the barrier island ecosystem.

We use kayaks to allow guests to see some wonderful areas of the park that are not accessible by car or by foot. Kayaking is absolutely the best way to experience the beauty and diversity of Assateague Island.

Our tours do not require kayaking experience, in fact we love to take out first time paddlers and introduce them to a sport that seems like an extreme sport, but does not have to be. Many people associate kayaking with running crazy river rapids or surfing overhead waves. We are more into having fun when we paddle around the very protected Sinepuxent Bay and salt marshes of Assateague.

All of our guides are very passionate about what we do and love sharing it with other people. We catch all kinds of creatures with nets, then transfer them to clear containers so that everyone has a chance to view and learn about these normally concealed marine species.

The owners of SuperFun are friends from college who all received degrees in Adventure Recreation or Environmental Science. Tom, Neil and Dale all love nature and enjoy sharing their passion for the environment with other people who may not get out to natural areas as often as we do.

Neil Tom Dale

OK, enough about us.
