'Royal Pains' Premiere: Frances Conroy Is A Wealthy Socialite Who Wants To Shut HankMed Down

Frances Conroy joined the cast of "Royal Pains" with the Season 5 premiere, but she's not likely to make any friends at HankMed any time soon. She portrays Blythe Ballard, a wealthy socialite who apparently had a hand in starting the Hamptons. She also proved quite a stickler for the rules.

After Evan saw her fall from a ladder, Hanks stepped in and was able to fix her injured arm. As thanks, she told him that HankMed was a detriment to the region, dumping hazardous medical waste and running a business with more than two employees out of a residence.

She dropped by a charity even with a surprise for the brothers. "This is a cease and desist order," she told Evan, handing him the document.

TV Fanatic wrote that they had lost faith in "Royal Pains," but the premiere managed to suck them back in. They loved the idea of a storyline featuring a Hamptons socialite looking to take down HankMed.

“Conroy's particularly sharp combination of grandmotherly gentility and cold-eyed malice will make for a nice series of curveballs for HankMed," wrote Entertainment Weekly of Conroy's addition to the cast.

INTERVIEW WITH ROYAL PAINS’ EXEC. PRODUCERS

We chatted with executive producers Michael Rauch and Andrew Lenchewski and Mark Feuerstein, (who is wearing multiple hats on the show – acting, directing and producing) about Royal Pains’ highly-rated new season, which airs tonight on USA at 9pm. It’s summer in the Hamptons and as the season begins, HankMed has expanded with Divya overseeing the new staff doctors, Evan and Paige are newlyweds, and Hank is recovering from the explosion at Shadow Pond. No spoilers here but we’ll tell you this much: this season is all about change.

SSN: How long is Hank sidelined for?
Feuerstein: The way our brilliant writing staff has handled Hank’s injury is a perfect microcosm of how they handle so many different threads on the show; it’s in no way resolved easily or quickly, it’s used as incredible fodder for storylines, themes in the show about Hank’s growth, Hank’s challenges and the challenges for the entire group as they work together.

SSN: Does this also reflect the ongoing evolution of Hank and Evan’s relationship as brothers?
Feuerstein: One hundred percent. The question that exists between Evan and Hank will always be, “Who’s really taking care of who?” and Hank’s injury only begs that question further. Evan’s potential future will go in an unexpected direction, but when you see it, you’ll realize it couldn’t go any other way given the woman he’s married to, his personality and the world he’s now become a part of. His aspirations will go beyond being CFO of HankMed.

SSN: What’s going on with Evan and Paige’s new marriage?
Feuerstein: Evan and Paige’s relationship is like a textbook for any aspiring TV writer of how to plumb the depths of a situation. Every week there’s a new conflict and resolution that deepens their relationship and does it in the context of HankMed, of Evan and Hank’s relationship and their relationship to everyone else. People are amazed by Evan’s evolution and that’s synonymous to his relationship with Paige. You cannot underestimate the power of the great Brooke D’Orsay who comes on this season with a vengeance. The writers have written such incredible conflicts for the character of Paige, and her new marriage to Evan. Where are they going to live? How will they spend their money? How will they navigate these conflicts?

SSN: How many episodes did you direct this season?
Feuerstein: I just finished directing my third episode. Michael and Andrew genuinely supported me. Each time, I feel I’ve grown a bit. I got to make a rap video, a chase sequence, a dream sequence, I got to work with mini horses, shoot a food fight and a huge medical situation. I’ve learned so much along the way and I hope I held my own.

SSN: What’s been the biggest change or progression working with this ensemble of actors?
Feuerstein: It is the holy grail to get to work for five seasons with any troupe of actors. The kind of trust, respect and comfort level that I have with Reshma Shetty, Brooke D’Orsay, Paulo Costanzo, Campbell Scott and Ben Shenkman; acting is all about being relaxed and comfortable. It’s a very rare thing. I’ve also watched them all grow up: Reshma got married, Paulo is expecting a baby in a couple of months, it’s one of the most gratifying aspects of getting to run more than half a season.

SSN: From the opening episode, one takeaway is that Hank asks for a specific medication as he’s recovering from his injury. That’s a little worrisome. What’s that about?
Rauch: We’re doing a crossover with Breaking Bad.

Lenchewski: We talked to you in the past about Hank being our flawless hero, usually for better and occasionally for worse, and this season, we decided to show the chinks in his armor. It’s organically platformed by what happened in the explosion at the end of last summer’s finale and in the Christmas movie. It gives Hank something to struggle with all season that affects how he treats his patients and the characters around him. Both Hank and Divya are harboring big secrets and there will be ramifications from both of them keeping these secrets.

SSN: Is Dmitry (Mark Ivanir) a regular this season?
Rauch: Dmitry has an intriguing episode in episode three. We’re tying up a lot of the Boris mystery that’s been going on since season one. We really want to have the accumulation of all that come to a head this season, and Dmitry is the guy who gets us there.

SSN: What else can we expect this season?
Lenchewski: The first four seasons of the show was about these characters becoming a family. This season is about the family fracturing and moving apart in different ways: people will be moving out of the house, Evan and Paige starting their own lives, and the tension will build throughout the season. People are trying to figure out how to move on with their individual lives while still being part of this family.

SSN: You’ve always had great guest stars. Who’s visiting the Hamptons this season?
Rauch: Ben Schenkman is now a regular as Dr. Jeremiah Secani. We have Frances Conroy as a Hamptons doyenne and Evan’s nemesis. Laura Benanti will recur, and Stephen Spinella. We’ll also see Henry Winkler and Kyle Howard again. The very handsome and talented Callum Blue will also guest star as a relative of Boris.

Lenchewski: We’re going to have a first this season: for the first time in the history of the show, there will be a murder. It’s something we’ve been building to and it’s got medical implications, It’s a little bit of a shock in a good way. We’ve wrangled it and kept it in the tone of Royal Pains.

Rauch: We’re very happy with this season. If it’s not our favorite season creatively, it’s very close to it. We’ve been pushing out the boundaries of the characters and the storytelling tone of the show, still staying in the sweet spot of the show. We’re very happy with the way it’s all worked out.

Royal Pains' star Mark Feuerstein teases big questions for season 5

It’s still blue skies in the Hamptons when Royal Pains returns tonight for its fifth season (9 p.m. ET on USA), but things will be getting a little stormy for Hank, Mark Feuerstein says. “A director I worked with, in of all places sitcoms, James Burrows, would say that in order to find the dimension and depth of a character, we need to find the dirt under his fingernails — which we were always looking for on Good Morning, Miami and Conrad Bloom and never necessarily found. But the writers of Royal Pains,” he says, “are so excellent at creating dimensional characters who you love, that this year they’ve earned the right to go to a darker place. So while Hank’s greatest flaw in the first four seasons has been like in a job interview, when you’d say ‘I just care too much about my job, I have to save everybody, and at times it’s at the expense of my private life,’ this year, Hank will realize that in trying to be perfect and invulnerable, he actually will get very vulnerable.”
More specifically, there are hints that Hank will develop a chemical dependency in his recovery from a craniotomy performed six months ago, after the explosion at Shadow Pond that he believes killed Boris (Campbell Scott). It won’t be in the foreground of every episode, Feuerstein says, “But what the writers do so well is introduce an issue and plumb the depths of that story line throughout the season, so it will come back to bite me.”

Hank will also be investigating the blast. “In one of the [early] episodes, we’re going to address the issue of where is Boris and what is going on with this plot to kill either Boris or his child. There’ve been several attempts,” Feuerstein says, “and the question is, who’s doing them and why. We will answer that.” Laura Benanti, one of the Broadway stars who lamented her track record of canceled TV shows (The Playboy Club and Go On) on Sunday’s Tony Awards, will recur as Shelby Shackelford, the head of Symphony Healthcare, which takes over Hamptons Heritage Hospital. “There’s a potential affiliation with HankMed, and that will become a potential affiliation for Hank as well with Shelby Shackelford,” Feuerstein says. She and her company come from Savannah, where Divya (Reshma Shetty) and Dr. Jeremiah Sacani (Ben Shenkman) will visit. “So we’ve been to Savannah, and Budapest, where we’ll travel in episode 3, and there’s an even more exotic trip looming for certain characters this season,” Feuerstein adds.

At home in the Hamptons, Evan (Paulo Costanzo) and Paige (Brooke D’Orsay) will be working through their first year of marriage: “Where are they gonna live, and how are they gonna spend their money?” While Divya, Feuerstein teases, “has a big question, which we can’t spoil, at the end of tonight’s episode. It’s a brilliant plot for the entire season. And the relationship between Dr. Sacani and Divya will be heating up, going deeper, and getting more complicated with that new plot twist for Divya.”

'Royal Pains' Season 5: Mark Feuerstein talks Hank's recovery

Zap2it: Your "Royal Pains" character, Dr. Hank Lawson, was injured in an explosion at the end of Season 4. How do we find him as Season 5 of the USA show begins Wednesday (June 12)?

Mark Feuerstein: There are a lot of moments where that comes into play, and I won't reveal just how well or not well Hank remains when we return. There are moments that are darker because Hank is recovering, or trying to, and then there are light, fun and breezy "Royal Pains" moments.

The writers did a brilliant job of navigating when it was time to tell the story of Hank's recovery and when it was time to put that aside and let him possibly return to the usual life that our show depicts.

Zap2it: How was the continuity of playing that for you?

Mark Feuerstein: Having treated many "patients" on the show, to have the opportunity to do my own version of what they've done was thrilling for me as an actor ... and scary for my character. And according to our executive producers, it was a good moment for the show.

Zap2it: Were you happy with the way last December's "Royal Pains" holiday movie was received?

Mark Feuerstein: I was. We typically don't do as well in the winter as we do in the summer, which is our bread and butter, but we held our numbers. We had to shoot it in Long Island, making 80-degree summer weather look like winter -- which meant snow machines and looking like we were shivering while we were actually sweating under our wardrobe.

Zap2it: How much of a relief was it to start Season 5 knowing you already were renewed for Season 6?

Mark Feuerstein: I have three examples, off the top of my head, of people who represent the gamut of insecurity about whether or not they'd get to go to work this coming TV season. We had Claire Coffee on the show recently, and she's in "Grimm," which has been picked up by NBC. We also had Danny Pudi, who didn't know then whether "Community" would come back for a fifth season. [It will.]

And then there's my wife, Dana Klein, who wrote a pilot for CBS called "Friends With Better Lives." She was waiting with bated breath, especially because of all the positive reviews she was getting from the heads of the network, to find out whether her show was going to be picked up. [It was, for midseason.] That's my long way of saying it is the holy grail to know you're coming back to work while you're in the middle of a season. It's the greatest gift.

Zap2it: How did getting the two-year renewal affect the atmosphere when you returned to the set for this season?

Mark Feuerstein: We really have become like a family ... and a relatively functional family, which I think is rare on most TV-series sets. We're just incredibly lucky. We have an amazing crew who we love like brothers and sisters, and we have never gotten so comfortable that we don't show up and bring our "A" game every day.

We love our jobs, and we know that if we don't make an effort to do our jobs well and get along, we could possibly sabotage what is such a blessing. It's a matter of keeping that in mind, in addition to the natural chemistry we have as people and as actors. I pinch myself every day when I go to work. We just have the best time.

Royal Pains Bosses, Cast Spill on the Season Premiere Shocker

Royal Pains Season 5 premiere ended with a stunning reveal: Divya (Reshma Shetty) is pregnant!

In the final moments of the episode, Divya tells Paige (Brooke D'Orsay) that the real reason HankMed couldn't get insurance coverage was because she was expecting. Because she's still pretty much in shock, Divya will take a beat before she tells Hank (Mark Feuerstein) and Evan (Paulo Constanzo) the truth. But when she finally does, her surrogate family will be there for her.

"When they get involved it's needed because she needs some support," Shetty told TVGuide.com at the ATX Television Festival. Added Feuerstein: "We're like a little family, the HankMed group, and so we'll try to take care of her."

Given Divya's past troubles finding love (she's broke off an engagement with Raj and had her heart broken by Rafa) and her struggles with her own parents, why did the producers decide to make Divya a single mom? Executive producer Michael Rauch said it was all about doing something unexpected. "We came back from Season 4 and had a two-season pickup for the first time, so we began thinking about bigger stories we could tell over both seasons," he said. "We felt like the easy way to go was to make Paige pregnant — so we had to go the other way and find a character that would be more surprising. It felt like the type of complication that would resonate throughout all various stories."

Will Divya get the parental support she hasn't in the past? Viewers will find out in Episode 10 when Rubina (Anna George) returns. "We know the long history between Divya and her parents. So, one of the things that freaks Divya out is her reticence to have yet another thing come between them," creator and executive producer Andrew Lenchewski told us. "What she's doing so rubs against the values of what they believe in." Added Shetty: "It's definitely a situation that South Asian women are faced with today. You just don't do that."

While Divya will only begin to show a tiny baby bump by the end of the season, Lenchewski said the pregnancy will begin to affect everyone immediately. "This will now be a living, breathing dynamic within the show," he said. "Nothing will ever be the same for her or the characters around her. The past four seasons have really been about coming together as a family, and this season we're going to see things that threaten to start pulling the family apart — whether it's tension in a marriage or someone having a baby and having to reprioritize."

And finally, how will Divya be as a mommy? "She'll be an amazing mother," Lenchewski said. "She is so nurturing, so loving and has such an incredible attention to detail. On top of that, she's surrounded by all this love and support from Hank and Evan and Jeremiah and Paige, and that seems like it will make up for her being a single mother and then some."

Royal Pains Season 5 Preview: Secrets, Lies & A New Big Bad

While USA’s Royal Pains occasionally will delve on the darker side of things (the explosion supposedly killing Boris last season, for example), the long-running series also possesses a strong funny bone with banter and outlandish situations involving its cast of characters.

This past weekend I saw firsthand where those elements come from by sitting down with stars Mark Feuerstein and Reshma Shetty, along with Executive Producers Michael Rauch and Andrew Lenchewski, at last weekend’s ATX Television Festival.

As is seen weekly in the show, the group clearly likes to have fun with each other - but they also take their jobs seriously in talking about what’s to come in tonight’s Royal Pains Season 5 premiere. Read on for an exclusive preview...

TV Fanatic: Does it change the creative process at all knowing that you have a lot more story ahead of you with the two-season renewal?

Michael Rauch: We do have two seasons and it does change the creative process, but one of the things that’s been different with season five is that it’s the first season that we’re only airing in the summertime. So, we were able to kind of build our entire season around a straight run, which changed the structure of our storytelling. And, in a way, simplified it because we didn’t have to worry about a season in the summer and then a shorter season in the winter.

TVF: Talk about Hank because it looks like he’s going to have quite a journey this season.

Mark Feuerstein: It’s a tribute to the writers how they introduce a situation, which is that I was part of that explosion and that there are physical ramifications for me and they plumbed the depths of whatever story might be there. That’s all I’ll say, but it will be great fodder as everything is with our brilliant writing group for story and character in season five.

TVF: They always say doctors are the worst patients and we’ll see Hank not being forthcoming with a lot of things, which is kind of an interesting thing to see him do.

MF: And against the advice he would give his patients. I worked with a director, James Burrows, who, when he would talk about Sam Malone from Cheers or a character I was playing on Good Morning Miami, he would say we need a little more dirt under the fingernails. That’s what great writers do is find the vulnerability, the Achilles heal, and that’s what they’re doing this year.

Andrew Lenchewski: That’s great. Why don't you go work for Jimmy Burrows? [Feuerstein looks at me]

MR: [mocking] When I worked with Alfred Hitchcock, Hitch always said...

MF: [not taking the bait] I just let it lie. I take the high road.

TVF: Hank usually is the solid rock helping other people, but was that one of your big goals for the whole season? To muddy him up?

AL: It really was. In terms of the evolution of the characters, it’s been easier with some of the other characters than it has been with Hank because he is the hero of the show, and he is almost infallible. One of the things that we’ve decided to do this year is kind of have to own it in a way and to have the infallibility be an issue unto itself.

So, exactly what you’re alluding to is something that we are playing this year and the notion of Hank at some point realizing that maybe it’s not good to always have to be the hero and the cost that it can. We’re going to see that cost throughout the season.

TVF: Is Hank going to have a chance to have some romance this season?

AL: Yeah. One of the few areas of backlash we felt from last season was the alleged bed- hopping on Hank’s part, which we disagree with and we know Mark and Hank disagree with. But we wanted to be very measured this season with how we introduce potential romantic interests.

Shelby [Laura Benanti] is somebody who’s being introduced really for story and character and medical reasons primarily. Our attitude is wait to see it and how that dynamic evolves and if we want to write to it one way versus another.

TVF: I personally liked Hank the slut.

AL: Mark was a fantastic slut. [laughs]

MF: Shut up.

TVF: What’s Evan’s journey this season?

AL: The way we look at the first four seasons is that they were very much about these characters becoming a family. We felt like at the end of last season that was solidified, and one of our goals for this season was to sort of see the family now start to fracture and come apart for a variety of reasons.

Evan and Page are now married…we’re going to see people moving in an out of the guest house and so these characters have always lived through all these experiences together are now having to find themselves diverge in their journeys.

TVF: I’m not sure how much we can talk about Divya without giving things away…

MR: I want you to give her the challenge of talking about this storyline elliptically without being able to reveal it.

Reshma Shetty: Elliptically, gosh.

TVF: How would you describe your character’s journey this season?

MR: By the way, just so you know, we nailed our answers.

RS: The journey, this is the most unique I think that I’ve ever encountered. Even as an actress I’ve never…this is a surprise. When they told me about this storyline I really didn’t believe them. The first time he told me I was like no, come on, come on, and going through it…

TVF: In the season premiere, we see Hank’s still very invested in the Boris mystery. Where is that going?

MR: We have very carefully played out the mystery and power of the Boris character from the way Andrew set it up so beautifully in the pilot. We felt like he’s better in small doses, both as a character to maintain the mystery and also in terms of the type of stories that we tell with him except for his medical issue, the rest is totally a little outside the sweet spot of the show. But at the same time, at this point in season five, we’d accumulated so many different pieces that we felt there was time to pay them all off.

TVF: Who is returning this season?

AL: Henry Winkler’s coming back.

TVF: I love that Frances Conroy is the big bad of the season.

AL: She’s fantastic. She integrated seamlessly into the show creatively and the actors love working with her and she’s a delight to be around. Callum Blue, who we meet in the third episode as part of the answering of all these Boris methodology questions that Michael was alluding to, and he’s fantastic. [Kyle Howard will also be back, too]

We have Brad Beyer and Alexandra Socha who were introduced as a local police officer and his daughter and they figure really prominently into Hank’s storyline for the season, especially towards the end of the season.

TVF: Talk about Jeremiah because he was such a great addition last season and I love that he’s sticking around.

MR: When we came up with Dr. Jeremiah Sacani we had an idea of what the character could be but also knew how close it was walking the line of a cliché or just something that could be offensive. When we cast Ben [Shenkman] and he came on the set, it just became this beautiful, complexed detail character. The more we saw him, the more we liked him, and the more we felt we could do with him and the same with the audience. And he incorporated so seamlessly into HankMed both as a human being on our set because we’re a very close family that makes the show, but also as an actor.

TVF: And maybe Hank the slut will come back in season six.

MF: I’m hoping he gets a little something somewhere before the end of season five.

TVF: How about a little webisode series, “Hank the Slut?” [laughs]

Royal Pains' Paulo Costanzo on Evan's Political Gamble and Making Frances Conroy Cry

The last time Royal Pains fans caught up with the HankMed team, Hank (Mark Feuerstein) was getting ready to go under the knife for major surgery.

When the USA series returns for Season 5 on Wednesday (9/8c, USA), the doctor will still be adjusting to being the patient. "It's a new dynamic because it's the first time that Hank has really been weak," Paulo Costanzo, who plays Hank's trusty brother and CFO Evan, tells TVGuide.com.

Fortunately, Evan will be around to help his big brother heal. "It's rather sweet really because, at the end of the day, Hank raised Evan as if he were his father because there wasn't a father around. Then there's the brother dynamic where they fight and bicker, and now there's this nurturing aspect," he says. "At the heart of it, Hank is really — other than his wife — the most important person in Evan's life, and he doesn't want him to get hurt or die."

Season 5 will see Evan step out of his brother's shadow in more ways than one. In addition to a possible acquisition of HankMed by another company that threatens to change the "whole landscape of the business, and of the show," according to Costanzo, Evan will find a big rival in one of Shadow Pond's affluent new neighbors, Blythe Ballard (played by Frances Conroy)."They're basically arch-nemeses," Costanzo says. "She's really out to get him."

Costanzo admits he had some trepidation about going toe-to-toe with the Emmy nominee, who will recur this season. "I know her most recently from American Horror Story, and she plays a scary part on that show. I was like, 'Oh my God, what if she comes to set and she's all method-y and she chooses not to talk to me or be mean?" he says. "She's the sweetest person. For some reason, she's one of those people that gets my sense of humor. I get her to cry with laughter."

On screen, their characters' dispute will push Evan into unchartered waters — politics! "Basically, Blythe threatens to deep-six HankMed through bureaucracy," Costanzo says. "Evan decides that the only way he can fight her is by fighting fire with fire, and for him to run to be a part of the Village Council so he has some influence and control and power over the decisions that are being made to save HankMed."

The move is a big one not only for the company, but for Evan personally. "Evan has grown up as the little brother to the overachieving doctor and he's never really gotten any true recognition himself. Granted, HankMed was his baby and he made that, but still, it's all based around his brother," Costanzo says. "This will be the first time that he gets personal, widespread recognition and acceptance. I think there's a deeper meaning for him."

Royal Pains viewers know all too well that Evan is the perfect character to run for office. Behind the scenes, however, Costanzo says it's been a bit more of an adjustment. "We just did a scene where he is having a campaign event. ... There is like a 3-foot-tall picture of my head with my finger pointing saying, 'We want you.' As an actor, it's always a little embarrassing to show up on set and there are 100 extras all looking at you. You're like, 'What?' and then you see a huge banner with your head on it," Costanzo says with a laugh.

Fortunately, he won't have too much downtime to sweat the small stuff. Costanzo, who made his directorial debut on the show last season, will be stepping behind the camera this summer to direct five Royal Pains webisodes focused specifically on Evan's campaign. "They follow Evan through the stuff you don't see on the show, the in-between-the-line stuff," he says. "They are giving me a lot of money to do this. It's not something small. If you're a fan of the show, you should absolutely check them out because they are mini-episodes of the show."

Taking a page from many other USA shows such as Psych and White Collar, the webisodes will also be interactive. Shooting hasn't started yet on the online series, but Costanzo already has big plans for the finale. "The final webisode may be a musical number. Whether Evan wins or loses the election, Costanzo thinks they've already succeeded. "A lot of people have said this season is the best season yet. We keep adding things, and everyone's story lines, as well as everyone as performers, seem to be evolving — all that needs to be in the recipe of a show that continues to be picked up and survive," Costanzo says. "I think we're more than surviving."

In celebration of Pride Month, USA Network’s Characters Unite public service initiative is teaming up with CB2 for a special multi-platform campaign to help combat hate and discrimination.

At a kick off event at the CB2 Soho store in New York City yesterday, Royal Pains star Reshma Shetty (Divya Katdare) was in attendance to support the initiative. Ex NFL player and LGBT youth activist Wade Davis was also in attendance.

Through in-store events free and open to the public (LA, San Francisco, NYC, Chicago and Toronto) and on-air and digital promotions, the month-long effort will foster greater tolerance and acceptance and benefit GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network), the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students.

Additionally, as part of the promotion, CB2 stores and cb2.com will sell a messenger bag, of which a portion of the proceeds ($30) will go to support GLSEN’s work in high schools across the country. The messenger bag will retail for $79.95.
