Spring Fling: Clothing Exchange & Sale

The day was cool, too cool, the remnants of stale beer, high hems, and other 5am unexplainables stained the air on the Main. The sun is tired and so are we creeping between tiny slits avoiding normal contact hidden behind shade and layer of Sunday`s laze and blaze.

The perfect day to finish the weekend slugging around a new type of initiative.

Not your neighborhood granola clothing swap but a full on experience.

The Spring Fling had the perfect political backdrop overlooking St. Laurent on Earth Day turned massive protest on the seventh day of rest.

Greeted by free goodies at the door, some hidden with special prizes situated next to the bar, Em & Seb pastel palette treats and my personal favorite(besides the Sangria), was Pure Tea`s Hibiscus, Kiwi Strawberry, and lemongrass ices tea the perfect replacement for those not allowed to hit the bottle.

I gathered the many things i couldn't wait to get rid of on the side as volunteers hung everything up accordingly, one side for swap and one side for all the blessed vintage vendors on the other.

Brooke from Citizen Vintage and my collaborator on Mews II, always at the forefront of vintage integrative projects was there styling in more outfit changes than hosting the Now Next Awards. Gina from our laws edition of Mews was representing reworked vintage, one of a kind, from Rose & Ruby one of the fastest growing line of designs in the city.

A hidden gem this day created street style, swap, and a nostalgic chill vibe.

I came out with some denim that fits like a glove of love, a pair of amazing short shorts, some floral, and a few animal pins by Genvieve Savard!

I am siked for the next edition and will be there camera and huge bag in tow.

Saturday night went from a bit awkward and silly to really hot very quickly!

Glam Gam teamed up with NPNP Organizer Jessica Lynn Whitbread and ACCM to bring back the infamous No Pants, No Problem party we've all been in withdrawal for the past 7 years!

Guest Host: Micheal J McCarthy was on set in leopard, with kissing experts Ginger Squared(Tristan and Julie) on site to teach us all why no one can resist the fire...crotch.

Performances by Kitty Van Dyke, Rusty Jameson, Sin Puna and other parts of the Glamily.

Like The Wolf spun us into sweat drip oblivion of ecstasy forcing a line up no only at coat check

( where i graced the door, demanding everyone to strip for a good cause),

but at the safe sex booth where pamphlets and condoms went to no wasted.

All proceeds went to Aids Action Now(' because they are awesome and fight really hard to make Canada a more just place for people living with HIV')!

I CANNOT wait until this party goes down again, from burlesque to grotesque did not matter because we were all letting it hang out!

Stuck In the Closet:Le Fashion Blues

Cloudy days, hours of back and fourth between rain showers and flights indoors.

Glaring up at your closet mocking you, taunting a challenge inside its depths.

Drawers and shelves, paces and hangers to angers.

The days become too easy and the nights a decrepit mess, the room spins in piles, racks filing down to bare empty skeleton.

Off to work your look a routine each piece replaceable a doll without wood or magnets.

Off to party your inspiration falls flat around you hurrying to find the things that "always look good" a recreation of a similar aesthetic.
You almost want to rip apart your bed sheets, roll it into a cape and fly up into where the Krakens play and let Stacey London and the lichens do their job.
Romping around the apartment changing the song, your hair, the cat in your arms blocking any view of the ticking clock.
The mirror a caricature of whats in mind yet pieces fall flat, an iron fist of uniformity.
Throw back another drink, it wont help you but let it settle, a hijab for the colonial settlers, it's someone else's time to shine?
Eternal rebel what shall I do?
out of season, in season, the weather too cold.
Basket case, suitcase, the sweater too old.
Reinvent, readjust, or do I say shuck it?
Big boots, big hair, or should i just fuck it?

How does one take a wardrobe you've become so use to, or a lack of inspiration turn into magik?
How do you get over the fashion blues and excite back into the world glowing re-imagining in new ways?
And what about at work within the confounds of a capitalistic machine?
I trolled around and tried to find the secret, begging for some insight, a new tactic, a spark of new strategics and thus here is what we found:

"When I can't figure out what to wear I go to a "go to outfit" which is an outfit I previously wore and know looks good. I find inspiration in my closet through myself. My closet is a reflection of a time in my life that I wore certain outfit that brought a memory while wearing it." NYC

"When I can't figure out what to wear, I usually pick one staple piece and work around that, like a sweet pair of boots or something. I get inspiration from my closet with anything leopard print or pink...And I find excitement in my casual day by adding a bow." TO

" When I don't know what to wear I stop trying to pull out a new outfit and instead, I just wear an already made outfit that I have already worn... one that I know that works well! And I try to mix new pieces together so the outfits are not always the same and for work (school in my case) I just wear comfortable things but fashionable" MTL

"I try to use whatever is in my mind as inspiration, whether it's a book I just read, architecture, or a movie (if I can't figure out what to wear). It doesn't have to be inspired by fashion per se. As for inspiration in my closet, I try to look with an outsider's viewpoint. I find when I have friend's over (or even my boyfriend) they will mix & match pieces I never would of thought of putting together, thus creating a whole new outfit. So I try to look with that eye to be as creative as possible. And lastly, during a casual workday, I dress simple, but I always look for something to make me stand out, usually an accessory, whether a brooch or shoes" PEI

During the week I pick my close out the night before because I don't have that much time to do everything in the am... I find excitement in my work day attire by making sure its an outfit someone will hit on me either on the street or subway." NYC

" i first get frustrated hahaha, but then i just pull something i haven't worn in a while and mix it with something recently bought so i don't feel like I'm repeating. Or i just change the use of certain things i wear, i.e. a super wide circular scarf as a cape or layer a lot of mesh, textures and shapes etc. or i try to personalize a certain style (sea punk, 90s, 80s, rave generation, goth, vamp, suit up, bboy, anything) with what i already have. i go either super androgynous, feminine, or gwen stefani hahaha. i like versatility in that sense.
OR i just go buy a new piece and I'm set for a bit. it really depends of when i get my pay check and the occasion. for work i have to be all in black so its pretty easy to add something different, accessories, hairstyle, shoes, etc. just push the limits of casualness.sometimes i just make really random accessories like a mother board or polly pocket necklace, dye/cut my hair and it pretty much makes the outfit." Sometimes I look at a piece of clothing in my closet and get inspired by the color or cut.
As for work casual day wear, I go with what's comfortable but still something that looks good. I get obsessed with certain clothes and wear them more often but mix with different things.Right now though...I hate everything in my closet haha...Usually happens to me when the seasons change. Rolling around to deliver samosas and a warm smile, despite the day i had, to Cafe Cleo's I end up rolled into "Sperm Bank 1", a door to door collector of anything white and sticky. Not in the mood but juiced with port and surrounded by the sexy joyous faces of Glam Gam and Co, i somewhat agree to the part. Passed a few beers, white stripes the anthem to the falling snow outside, sitting here practicing lines straight out of 8th grade nostalgia. I feel like Elizabeth Wertzel in her first few days of Prozac.

Mixed emotions plague the venue with set builders uneasy of supplies, stylists forcing creativity sparking genius amidst "crusty underwear" and 'boxed faces'. Rushing lines behind hours, rum & cokes, Miss Vickie's, and a drive to force the awakening all withing a 24hour period.

For one with such hatred for the holidays to be surrounded by silver bells, tin men, and a story so familiar that you cant help but wait for the nudity to consume you out of the nightmare that might actually be 12 days of christian perversion. Maybe if the holidays were really like this I would actually go home for it.

With names like Tiny Twink, Mr. Splooge, and Jizzabel, a drag queen narrating with a three piece band, a missing dame, the sweet sounds of the next set of the stripper joint downstairs, a homage to the true foundation of Montreal and the realistic underground businesses at the heart of such an artistic city. A jungle of the brightest craftsman juggling a Friday night specifically for a craft and no profit except that hopefully for Heads & Hands. What better lump than that in your pants or lack there of.

My fears through beers were hesitantly moved donned in an outfit made for Oliver Twists the Hustler Edition and hand in hand job with our Donor box I came, he came, and 24 hours of creative power ended in pure holiday bliss. What an exploratory time between breaking gender barriers and redefining whats sexy this "grotesque burlesque" troupe really fucked my mind with inate grandiosity, genius comedic timing, and the acting and musical talent to fill stadiums.

Another climatically Manic Monday, I schlept up Parc Ave through frozen teardrops and fiscal flying winds to sit down with Y!D.N.A. designer, and 2010 Telio winner Andy Hoan Nguyen, to chat about all things; fashion, life, Ottawa Fashion Week and all that controversy.

The outside world was clouded, slapping everyone in the face, but indoors Andy was cheerful and energetic, not even realizing the storm brewing.

The place was noticeably starking clean, the neurosis of a perfectionist designer, sitting at his iPad sipping off a straw beside the bay window, a knight at his round table.

``For me runway is blank canvas for a fashion designer to perform….Part of me wishes it was intentional but it was art, end of story.``

His OFW runway show was influenced by the flourishing Jewish- and Chinese cultures that mark up the surrounding area around the studio and creative space, a giant hop and skip from where he grew up in Plamadon amongst mixed Jamaican and Asian neighborhoods. Though this is not what media focused on when an unmentionable being spoke out against Andy`s racially influenced collection and the use of make up that made up the styling of the show. A liberal member of the MP thought Andy’s show was racist by using dark makeup or `black face` on some of the black models which he saw no connection to. ``For me runway is blank canvas for a fashion designer to perform….Part of me wishes it was intentional but it was art- end of story.``The look to him was all about the everyday person that walks by at various positions of the sun. ``A shadow at night``. The lips and eyes of each look, the brightest pieces, during the night, a hat the nights shadow cast upon the face. The white make up representing the lights on sun blinding effect. He flips through his iPad, back and fourth. ``See the black hood covers his face and yet his eyes are still purely white``

Andy has since apologized to Ottawa Citizen but that did not end their camp from continuing the attack on the young super talent on other social medias, and stooping to a level of ignorance with their own racist remarks. Quoting him as shameful that he is not representing his Chinese and Jewish people. Clearly, their camp did not do their research nor attend the show that famously received standing ovations and high praise from the crows yet did not hesitate to bring up the designers sexuality.`I don’t find a connection between my race and being gay…and she completely disregarded that I am 100% Vietnamese...`` The only fear for him is that all of his friends from his home neighborhood will read about the situation and begin to question his intentions.

But besides all of the extreme views in the press, his first showing as the closing spot at OFW was extremely touching and personal for this Montreal designer. Bringing a majority of his models from Montreal, some not even signed with agencies, some not even remotely close to height `requirements` but stocked with "Ten inches from the hooker store", as a complete journey for Y!DNA the brand."I know each of them personally and we were so close and to achieve fashion week together…that’s just awesome!...In Telio I was so young and just heard no sound, you do it to win something but now it was meant to be. In Ottawa I could hear each person clapping."

"I styled a fortune teller who told me how I will die..."

My first question as may be all of yours was; Why Ottawa? Recently crowned 8^th on the worst dressed city in the world, yet the nations government city seems to have a budding fashion week of their own.

"I am too young to do MFW. Maybe I spoke too much French when half the panel was Anglo but all was meant to be. Montreal is like a coke without ice…you miss that element, that crisp sparkle so it never was a wish to reach Montreal but for me it was hitting the `capitol`….Ottawa was like 85 feet so it’s a longer runway, pictures are better."

Not shy of dreams, one aspiration for this Montreal sensation comes with news that Project Runway, the original American program that can launch designers into super stardom off of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week stage, is now accepting applicants from all over the world."Project Runway is my major goal, a dream I dare not to dream." With international aspirations also mentioning how an old dream was to study in London at Saint Martins, so he plans to sometime make a shirt asking them to accept him. How collegiate! "I also want to travel the world with just one model, and take my own photos every where we go". But he may have to achieve that before he retires in the UK. "I styled a fortune teller who told me how I will die. I’ll be rich because I’ll have a driver and me with white long hair at 74 years old in London in a black car on my way to see a friend..."Of natural causes of course!

What else for the future of Y!DNA, a line chosen due to the Y chromosome representing woman's wear and the differences between men’s and women’s wear and bridging the individual details together. For the next line there will be patterns and colors, graphics and modern vintage. And always keeping a unisex flare which is why I envy the clothing so most as the line clearly more steered to a bolder gay man.

Seems all is fair in the world that is Andy Hoan Nguyen. Spirits are high unaffected negatively by the heated debate in Fashion Magazine and online mediums that seem to want to take a Vogue circa October 2009 approach. If we keep attacthing such negative views to something as simple as black makeup we can never get past it as a society. We've always been bombarded with the darkest color on our wheel as signs of evil, darkness, fear, death which has been used against our demographics for centuries. Its as simple as losing the meaning behind the symbolism to move forward an enlightened society and become smart enough to recognize an artists creation over an invisible issue that would be insulting to the days where, `black face`, was a recognizable technique to offend Blacks and knock them out as inferior to our world.

"...but now it was meant to be. In Ottawa I could hear each person clapping."

At the end of the day we all want the same thing, "to be great, not necessarily famous". Okay maybe not everyone has aspirations for greatness or to have eight children, a soccer team of offspring - like Andy. But like him we all just want to know how to love and how to be loved which in my opinion, if you look closely enough, is the exact story behind his latest fashion collection.

The street was slick and frozen, slippery and daunting as Dina and I made our way up our familiar path up St. Laurent usually stopping at the Royal Phoenix but this night was different, it was our very own after hours party of three at glamorously effortless boutique Citizen Vintage.

By now you all have read about my new initiative and pumping fashion dance party MEWS.

I am the co-founder, art director, and second half of DYDH Productions with Dina Habib, who wants to show off what Montreal has to offer.

Through this very blog I was approached by Citizen Vintage for a fantastic collaboration where I would get to co-style a whole runway just for Mews!

We were met by super stylish and co-owner Brooke who had a vision of this grunge glam vibe which is instantly my aesthetic.

From Sante Fe to Don`t Tell the Babysitters Dead to private school and stopping at the dance bar.

We created a story of complete vintage unisex eccentricity.

Mixing men and women in patterns, of skirts, blazers, sand wading velvet ending with complete punk rock disco freak!

From frost bitten make up miscommunication to clothing rack crashes to our 'make it work'

moments the scene was fun, young, genderly ambiguous a great off set to the minimalist perfection that was the architectural neutrality of Pedram Karimi.

I look forward to future collaborations and shopping endeavours at Citizen Vintage and I would like to thank all of them for the wonderfully pleasant and fun experience and for the gracious gift certificates donated for our raffle the night of Mews!

Congratulations to those winners who will get to experience all the glory I dug through but getting to leave with a shopping bag full of delicious vintage finds!

Hollowed out amidst a log,

Face painted with soot.

He rocks back gently asleep,

A long journey to foot.

Last season the caravan kids hit the sands, this Fall/Winter season they're backpacking up north.

Christian Deslauriers, also known as Christian L`Enfant Roi, reminded us of how vast Canada can be and how much wildlife exists to our northern borders.

Taking influence from indigenous roots, and teaming up with Montreal photographer Mathieu Fortin and Berlin artists Alexandra Sebag to create prints straight off the barks of trees creating a fantastical journey mirroring the blizzard we all trouped through Friday night.

The space was cool and intimate with barefooted boys marking the center of the room a live installation of quirky hair pieces and century old taxidermy by Alex Hercule (Hercules Taxidermy Imports), minimal in the Eastern Bloc theater room.

Models posed amidst bright blinding light as if a sun flare bouncing off a sheet of ice, natural in existence as we enjoyed a personal storybook lined with boris beers and wine.

It is a winters wonderfulland filled with wind, ice, and laced with snow.

Cabin Fever trapping us like a fox sacrificed for the native agenda.

It is a world to escape, content in ones own solitude, injected with natures palette coveted into art works of wool, cashmere, cotton, and silk.

Each design completely L`Enfant Roi with my favorite pieces always being the one pieced garments, the birch print, and the use of braided hair as if a right of passage from child to man.

Another brilliant showing from the french-Canadian designer proving that the best shows are always outside of Montreal Fashion Week when the designer can create magic tunnel vision and reflect the artistry that is the brand and my favorite local designer, Christian LÈnfant Roi.

Glam Gam did it again!

This time 3x as DIRTY and it wasn't even a show!

Two of Glam Gam Productions, Montreal's Premiere underground HIGHlarious burlesque troupe, sexiest boys, Tristan Harris, and Michael J McCarthy had a birthday and they turned it out in style!

They turned Cafe Cleos into a b-day bash filled with Bareaoke (strip karaoke),

Celebrity Impersonations, and some hot messy JELLO WRESTLING!

There were an enormous amount of accessories during this seasons Montreal Fashion Week, enough to fill one of Mariah Carey`s closets!

Though my favorite partnered look was not worth that of gold, sterling, nor blood diamond but one you could make yourself.

No not an arts and craft nightmare and no this is not a Montreal Street Fashion DIY episode but one usually donned as a men`s counter cultured staple: really fucking amazing facial hair.

So I took it upon myself to see that the 1960s trend was revisited at SMM22.

The Royal Phoenix bar opens at five with a few locals settling in to have a happy hour brew and poutine combo. I arrived pulling threw snow but fruitfully grabbed a cab up north, an easy route up St. Laurent, yet to my loss traffic stood up and fevered the seats.
To an unknown surprise I could see I was early, a new thing for me, maybe its 2012, maybe I just cant tell time, either way I'm chucking along ten pieces of framed art with the DJ at my rear siked for such an eclectic gig and probably regretting riding up with me and all of my bags.

Marked sections off ,the bar floor my muse for the night ahead, for manifesting a collection of emotionally raw drawings and paintings by local Montreal artist and stylist Tristan Harris who also happened to be in one of the video projections a collaboration with underground photography lord Savon, creating an entry for the guests to walk into an atmosphere unusual for the hot Montreal party place, now a vehicle for all of your and my creativity, transforming the grounds into an instant vernissage, fashion show bulleted with indie dance tracks by Brazil native transplant to Montreal DJ Zarfan who you all have seen in the last Closet Raid..

Drinks were cheap with beautiful bartenders on tap, a low key vibe with edge and enough zest that anyone can relate to the night regardless of interest in fashion, art, and just want an innovative experience to kick off their night or end the work day.

Masabni floored first with two different styles set of looks from cocktail dresses anyone would shine in to edgier pieces with attention more to details playing with lace, ribbon, latex, sequins topped off with the styling of Tristan Harris.

Make up was clean and washed out with a boosted lip by Liana Worshell, Aurore De Cristini, and Remi Alwan.
Hair braided, teases, youthful and fun by Stephanie Choquette and Elyse Brouillette(salon voltige).

With a few minutes for a cigarette, your next beer or cocktail, or whatever goes on behind your own doors before a fashion video stimulation by Sasha Brunelle, a brilliant effort of style, music, and vulnerability.

The models scurried back to sophisticated cool with an urban tribal feel for Sugaristick with styling and jewelery by Miss Cochette.

Make up was a grungier dark eye with huge rocked out locks.

A huge success for me as a vision of a chill vibe evening by DYDH Productions before finishing the after partying at POMPE.

NEXT UP: DYDH Productions is bringing you to After Fashion: The Madhouse:a Post-Semaine de Mode Party and a chilling departure from the bar confines of Mews to the comfort of your own loft asylum hosted by Dina Habib and I, Danik Yopp.

A night of dancing, vogueing, after fashion week looks, and pure debauchery!

Next MEWS will be on Feb 16th the following week with designs by Pedram Karimi and styles by Citizen Vintage co-styled by moi, Danik!

Art will take a new medium with natural elemented visual art by Claudia Parent and LIVE fashion illustrations by Judyna Pres, so dress to impress the artist!

A Year in Review.

Usually I go though phases taking on an accessory or favorite item for the moment, change it up, and spit it out on to the streets of Montreal. This seasons look takes a hint from this very blogs tag line, " the Real Streetwalkers of MTL".

Taking style advice from the working girls and pretty woman of the world, like recent contributors to the racy trend, Taylor Momsen, Courtney Love, Sophie Bowels, etc have taken the feminine look of garters, hosiery, fishnets, and lace with masculine street looks.

It sprouted up on such catwalks of Jean Paul Gaultier (he is being mentioned a lot by us lately eh?) and for those men scared or confused by the look transcending gender norms can try it under slacks as sexy socks or use the garters as an old man would to hold up your socks.

If like me you do not have any money, can't find a proper fetish store for garters, or hate spending money on expensive hosiery that runs within one night out take these simple steps to whorifying your evening:

1. Take a trip to the dollar store and pick up hose, fishnets, or socks

2.Don't ease into them the more distressed the better

3. Take an over sized blazer, a big button down, an over sized shirt, extra long tank etc

4. Wear booty shorts, underwear, or something more racy underneath for the brave

5. Take regular suspenders and attach to the frontal sides of your waistband and let fall through your 'pants' until it reaches your socks or wear over your shoulder and through your pants for thigh highs

6. Accessorize, take a few shots, and go

7. Tell anyone who tells you to put on pants, how much?, or any other jealous comments to FUCK OFF
