Squarespace 5 vs. Squarespace 6

2013-01-24T11:31:00.000-08:00

Sorry!

Happy almost payday to all you working class nerds! I know it has been two days since I have posted, but things have been a little crazy. Between taking up more hours at work, and trying to rewrite this site, I honestly have had no time to work on writing.

Battle to the Death!

So, I have been blogging for a while, switching platforms to whatever suits my needs at the time. and a few years back, I found the beautiful SquareSpace. At the time, SquareSpace was in version 5, and it was a god send.

Being able to edit the look of your site on the fly with little to no coding was amazing. It was insanely convenient, being able to place sidebars and change widths of everything. By the time you were done, you had a site that literally was unrecognizable from someone else's.

But, that is what Square Space was built for! Building multiple types of websites in a way with an end result of a completely unique look. Most of the things you do, or need to edit, can be achieved through a simple slider bar.

Though, convenience costs money! Luckily, not that much though. For only 8 dollars per month, you get the basic service which provides a large amount of functionally.

Here is just one website built with the simple functionality in Square Space 5.

Fast Forward

2012-2013 is here and Square Space has come out with version 6! For the most part, when a piece of software gets updated, it gets better. Functionalities that already exist are improved. Bugs are removed, etc.

But for whatever reason, when Square Space updated, it removed everything. They basically started from scratch. All the functionalities that I knew and loved were all gone. Almost all the customization of your Square Space site was removed.

They even went and removed all the cool starter templates. So now you only have a handful of portfolio style templates, and you have limited customization on them. Obviously, if you know how to code (and have the time to) then you can still customize your site the same way. But, if that is the case, you might as well have a Blogger profile with css add ons.

The long and short of it, is if you want to have a plain looking site, Square Space 6 would be fine for you if you are down with the 8 dollars a month. But if you are looking to have a truly unique looking site, Square Space 5 is the way to go.

Though, just because I believe in bettering yourself constantly, I would pick up a css book anyways and use it whenever you can.

And as a last note, Square Space is constantly being updated, so in about a year or so, it will probably be in usable order.

I Would Recommend...

I would recommend going to Square Space and trying out the free 14 day trial. See if it is right for you, and if you like it, good for you. If not then I would definitely try out the Square Space 5 trial.

Kickstart the Week with: Arrival - A Short Film by Alex Myung

2013-01-21T13:58:00.000-08:00

New Site!

As you guys can see, I did a huge revamp of the site! It is still a work in progress like all great things, but I feel I am heading in the right direction.

One of the things we spent most of our time on, was the new logo. Shelby Reynolds and myself spent hours upon hours going through logos that looked anywhere from really professional to insanely childish. Well, at my request and my designers dismay, we went right in the middle.

Life of Ramen Logo

I think in a really good way, the new logo represents what I try to deliver you guys. Posts from Life of Ramen deliver you all your childish desires, in as close to a professional way as possible.

Kickstarter: Arrival: A Short Film by Alex Myung

This Monday's "Kickstarter of the Week" is by a man named Alex Myung.

The reason I chose Arrival is because of the way that it actually portrays an emotion. I am going to let you guys watch the video and then we will discuss a little!

For one, Myung is an amazing artist! I really can't express how jealous I am when I compare my sketches to his; besides that, it is how personal the story will be to so many people makes it beautiful. I have a lot of friends that have been through the struggle of coming out to their friends and family. It is almost always nerve racking and emotionally trying.

Goal

Myung's goal for this project is to gain 20 thousand dollars, (which is fairly small comparatively) and this money will be going toward finishing the project in a timely fashion.

Here is an info graphic on how the money you donate will be distributed!

All of us have gone through a personal conflict, but the sad thing is a lot of us don't think we can relate to anyone. It feels like the end of the world because you don't think anyone can help you. Arrival will connect people to the fact that they are not the only ones going through a troubling situation.

Finito

If anything, you should take away the fact that Arrival is a beautiful piece of art, and Myung deserves to be funded. But for those of you who cannot help fund him, do what I do and reblog, retweet, like, whatever!

Lastly, here are some goodies for you! Pics and stuff galore!

The bet was simple enough, if this picture(Right)

received one million likes, this Catherine lady would have sex with the nerdy guy on the right! .

The interesting part about the whole thing, is the internet gods blessed this goofy looking guy with over a million likes in 18 hours!

No comment has been made as to whether the arrangement has been honored, but why don't you go over Petter Kverneng's Facebook page to seal the deal with another like!

Anima: Gate of Memories Successfully Funded!

2013-01-18T13:44:00.000-08:00

Hello nerds!

You guys are smart, so I know you remember when I told you about the Anima Kick Starter campaign!

If you don't remember, or you didn't have a chance to check it out, then Anima: Gate of Memories is an indie RPG in development for multiple platforms. If you are interested in reading more about the game, Check this page describing the game out!

Success!

As of the 14th, Anima has successfully been funded on Kickstarter! It always makes me happy to see something with this much effort rewarded. So I want to personally thank all of you who backed the project in any way, monetarily or otherwise.

I know the Anima team feels the same way! Check out this quote that they sent out to all you guys who backed them!

The project is funded. So many things come to my head right now that it is difficult to find the correct words, but I suppose that there is one thing, above all else, that we should say; Thanks to every one of you for backing us. The fact that so many people gave us their support and believed in our work is something really important for us.Now, looking back at things, this project was an incredible road. There were wonderful times, and others in which we honestly thought that we were not going to do it. But we are finally here; ready to start working in Gate of Memories.

It touches my feeble nerd heart when I see something like this succeed. So, thanks to you guys, in the near future, we will all be playing an amazing game and you know your contribution made it possible!

Elder Scrolls Online: New Game Play Video!!!

2013-01-17T07:31:00.000-08:00

Morning all, I have some amazing news for you!

Bethesda associate Zenimax has released a new video of their upcoming game The Elder Scrolls Online! I know that we were all getting our ears blasted out from twitter posts, and blogs talking about why there was no info on the game for years. But now that it is nearing completion, you don't really hear to much about it.

To be honest, I am absolutely giddy at the gameplay video that Zenimax posted. From what they say, I can't really imagine a more perfect MMO for the hardcore RPG'ers out there. Maybe I am just a fanboy, but the idea of having my Orc archer mage kicking the crap out of my friends is just amazing.

You guys all know and love the real time combat system that has leeched itself onto the Elder Scrolls series. I know that many fans of the games were worried that Zenimax would take the feature out to make it feel more like mainstream games. Well, the long and short of it is...

The Elder Scrolls Online will be full real time, and the coolest part about it, is what they call Mega Server! Instead of world jumping trying to find your friends, you are going to be on a smart server system that will morph you over to different servers on the fly to bring you closer to your friends. In fact, you shouldn't even notice it happening because it will not effect the world around you, or the monsters you are facing.

So I know we are all dying to ask this question. Zenimax, why won't you take all our monies!!!

I will just leave this right here!

Elder Scrolls Drinking Game!!!

Drunk Gaming and Throwing Bows!

2013-01-16T23:18:00.000-08:00

After a long week of drinking, arguing, and playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl,

my family is gone. Sadly, I will miss them, but I know I will see them again soon.

Hanging out with my brother has reminded me why I started playing video games. While video games can be a very rewarding personal experience, I feel that playing games with friends and

family can cause laughs and tears, and it makes the experience of playing

amplified.

Those close calls are so much more extreme, and getting demolished by the final boss

is that much more funny!

I remember playing one of the old Mario Parties with my brother and cousins, and we would play it to the point of breaking multiple controllers. There was this tug of war game, where you had to spin around the analog stick really fast and whoever was fastest, won the game. Suffice to say, blisters were just as common on our palms as pimples were on our faces those days!

Towards the end of our younger years, we would even end up coming home battered and bruised from us throwing bows at each other during mini games!

When I say that playing games socially is one of the finer things in life, I don't necessarily mean MMO's, nor am I excluding them. It just seems like party games, or games that have a set goal that is small and achievable, suit larger groups.

So, if you want to rekindle your love for playing video games, go grab a couple of friends, and grab a copy of Fifa, or the new Mario Game! Crack a couple of beers, and enjoy your time! I assure you, if you have some interesting friends, you will end up with sore ribs from laughing so hard.

If you guys want to see what I do on a normal day of playing video games with my friends, check these videos out!

If you want a cool new game to play with your friends, check out the new Super Mario game!

Pokemon X & Y Artwork Revealed!

2013-01-14T08:39:00.001-08:00

I know you guys are super excited about the new Pokemon X & Y games that are coming out in October, just like me! As you know, I am a huge Pokemon fan, considering I just got Pokeballs tattooed on my knuckles!

Well, Nintendo just released some new art work of what I assume are the new legendary Pokemon.

This is the other one I found, and it reminds me of an older Pokemon from Gold & Silver possibly.

So, more importantly, how excited are you guys to play this on your new 3DS XLs? And why is this the shortest time between generations of Pokemon games?

If you don't already have one, check out these great prices on the new 3DS XL!!!

How to become a Video Game Artist

2013-01-08T12:20:00.000-08:00

I wrote this post as a draft about a year ago, decided to throw it out today and see what happens. Disregard any out of date information! Edited for continuity ;)

Hello everyone. Happy Tuesday! I am editing and posting this, because my artist corner crashed and burned this week. Great start right? I had the interview set up and everything, but work and my parents coming to visit made scheduling impossible.

So, with adaptability in mind, I decided to use an old draft I had about ways to become a video game artist. These obviously are not the ONLY ways, but they are ways that I have seen work, and have been recommended to me by industry professionals.

So how do you get to the top of the most wanted list in the industry? I have compiled a short list, to at the very least point you and your pencil in the right direction. Enjoy!

1. Sketchbook: If you don't already have a sketchbook, go grab yourself a medium sized one and take it with you everywhere. The good thing about a sketch book, is you don't have to make complete drawings, because this is your private book. When you are out at a coffee shop and inspiration hits, you can draw a crude sketch and if you like it, you can redraw it in detail. Remember, draw everything, nobody but you will see it.

2. Tablet: If you have never heard of drawing tablets, they are pads that you can hook up to your computer so you can draw in Photoshop like you would with a pencil on paper. They are kind of expensive, but they are insanely useful. You can finish up sketches, and eraser marks are not a problem. Almost necessary if you plan to do video game art. (Unless you are a pixel artist*)

3. Deviant Art: With any field, networking is key. Build yourself a following of people that like your art. One of the most popular places to do this, is Deviant Art. The reason being, is that unlike Facebook where if you post your art, people will have reactions like; "Oh that's pretty... Let's look at some memes." On Deviant Art, people are there to look at art, and likely have the ability to give valid input. So if you gain a following there, it will likely be with people that can appreciate your art and will willingly talk about it, and repost it.

4. School: This one should be obvious, but if you want to gain skill in your field, whatever it is, go to school. There are art schools all over the country, some being better than others, but all are better than nothing. Polish your craft, practice practice, and get good grades in school. If you are lucky, your hard work can pay off your student loans!

5. Work: This is an interesting one, and I have seen it more so in the programming field, but if you can show a company that you have made a decent amount of money doing what you do, you are more trustworthy to them. They see that your work was worth someones money. So, jump on Deviant Art, get a portfolio on there, and then go looking for people in the forums looking to pay you for work. Find companies locally or online that are looking to get artwork done. Submit t-shirt designs to Jinx.com. Do whatever you have to do, because not only will this help pay for gas and coffee, but it will help you get a foot in the door for a future job.

I hope this helped you out, and I wish you luck getting into the industry!

Yesterdays Post: Kickstarter: Anima - Gate of Memories

Kickstarter: Anima - Gate of Memories

2013-01-07T12:02:00.000-08:00

Hello nerds, I am Kickstarting this Monday off with my Kickstarter project of the week!

Anima - Gate of Memories is very similar to ARPG's that have become fairly popular in recent years. But what caught me, is the intense detail in the story and open game elements.

Currently, the development team has a years worth of art and a solid game play base, but as you probably know, they are on Kickstarter for a reason.

I see promise in this game, and I see promise in the fact that it will be funded. Especially considering that they are already 66% funded. So, do them a favor. Check out their Kickstarter page, if you like it, fund it with what you can. If you are living off Ramen like me, tweet it or write a blog post about it. Just make sure to link back to me also! ;)

Thanks again for reading, my faithful following of the technical inclination! Here are some linky links, and other resources! And make sure you check out tomorrow's first artist corner! Where I am interviewing a rapper that is local to the Orlando scene.

Naked Girls Buttholes.....

2013-01-07T05:25:00.000-08:00

Morning all, I warn you that this is not today's blog post. I just wanted to let you know that one of my top search keywords from google to my website, is naked girls buttholes. Legit style.

Free to Play Nintendo

2013-01-06T12:55:00.000-08:00

As the internet has become more popular, and the majority of people own credit cards, a new style of gaming has erupted. You see it pretty often if you are an active MMO gamer. The style of game is called very innapropriately, Free to Play.

If you haven't heard of it before, the difference between Free to Play and old fashioned pay to play games is, with regular pay to play games, you either pay for the game right off the bat and play for free. On the other side, you can get the game for free, and then pay a monthly fee.

With free to play games, most of the time, you get the game free, and you don't pay a monthly fee. But to get more levels, or stronger equipment (ETC) you have to pay for them.

Examples Here!

Now to the whole point of this blog post, the other day, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata talked to a publicist about new possibilities of payment, and doors opening as far as ways to develop games based around this Free to Play model.

I know my first thought was frustration, as I would hate to have to pay to finish the next Zelda when I already finished half the game. But thankfully, Iwata also said, that if and when they use this model, they wouldn't use it for games that were already established. So games such as Mario or Animal Crossing will stay the way they are, with 60 price tags. But newer franchises that are iffy, or game ideas that they are testing out, have the possibility of being a free game to start out, but you pay for extra levels or equipment.

On an interesting note, Microsoft has published its first Free to Play game not to long ago. Here!

So, I have to ask, for those of you who know the model. What do you think of Nintendo games going Free to Play? Should they do it, or should they stick to their guns?

Comment, rate, subscribe. And thanks again my faithful following of the technical inclination.

Check out Iwata's full interview Here!

Prepare for Tuesday's first Artists Corner! Every Tuesday, I will find a local or internet based artist, whether it's music, art, or video games, and I will interview them about what they do. Demo some of their work, and talk about random shit! Sounds like tons of fun!

The Google Empire Falls

2013-01-05T06:38:00.000-08:00

Not affiliated with Google, just a fan :)

Every day I wake up, striving to learn new things. In that sense, Google is the best teacher the world has ever known. Google never sleeps, and it knows how to keep class interesting, so to speak.

Google can teach you how to speak Taiwanese, or it can teach you how to birth a calf. It never asks you for anything in return, except its occasional use.

Google even owns the largest media sharing website on the planet. YouTube***

Google makes most things you do on the Internet possible in the easiest and fastest way. Even in the real world, the self driving car powered by Google will help elderly stay active, and I would presume eliminate crashes caused by drunk driving.

Google glasses make it possible to share your point of view with the world. One blink at a time.

But like all great nations, will this shining star collapse upon itself? Will Google pull an Alexander the Great and capsize?

What would happen to the world if Google failed? How would we get from 'a' to 'b' without Google maps? How would we socialize without Google Plus? Or be productive without Google Docs?

I am sure we would survive if Google ceased to exist, but I know my life would be much harder, less fulfilling, and other depressing things.

So tell me, what do you use Google for! Do you think they are nearing the end of their reign? And finally what would you do without this ever growing library?

Check out my last post! The Tablet Revolution!

The Tablet Revolution

2013-01-03T13:20:00.000-08:00

Hello my faithful following of the technical inclination. I was recently informed that the company I work for will be providing all senior sales reps with the newest Ipad. The reason behind this, which I find is kind of funny; The company I work for is on the technology side of the spectrum. So, they figure that if we can do presentations to families and companies digitally, instead of from a binder, we will successfully look like we know what we are doing.

Regardless of whether or not this will be successful, it got me thinking. Technology is everywhere, and convenience is king. So the multimedia tablet has a huge foot hold in the industry. I am not the first one to notice this though. A quick Google search of the word 'Tablet' will pull up millions of reviews, opinions, and jibber-jabber. It will also pull up hundreds of tablets all ranging from both ends of the power spectrum.

Hell, they even have remote controls that are shaped like Ipads.

How could the world resist though? Something that you can watch movies on, read books on, and do really whatever else a media computer can; All in the size of a children's book. It even captured the ADD crowd by being extra shiny.

Even the least technological groups are moving towards the tablet revolution.

Yes, this is the pope using his tablet to do his first tweet, blessing all of his near million followers. Check out the Tweet Here!

Ask the pope a question here! @Pontifex

So, now that everybody is floating towards this new technology, are you ready for it? If you don't already have one, is it time to pinch your pennies? Well, I can't answer that question for you. But I can throw you in the right direction!

It has been a very long time since I have posted.

A very long time...

I do miss writing very much, but I go to school and I work. I found a girl that I really like.

I found out this girl feels the same way about me. Then I friend zoned myself.

I am constantly broke, yet I always pull out on top thanks to my friends.

I still make games, and I started sketching again. Which most of you have never seen before.

After all the ups and downs, I will start writing again. As well as I am able, I will post about the art I do.

I will post about the games and software I am working on. About the things that are happening in my new life.

And to be honest, I don't really give a shit if it is boring. I am writing to have fun again, not to get views.

Have a nice life views. :)

But older is not worse, because the trailer looks amazing! So check it out, and support the team!

Fallout and Delicious Mead

2012-03-25T11:03:00.000-07:00

Hey everyone, as you know my friends and I went to the ren fair yesterday. We have returned victorious, with nothing but minor scratches and a slight hangover.

Boobies and Mead

But, funny story... My friend and I were going to pick up some mead from the tavern area, and he offered to go in for me so I could smoke a cigarette. So there I wait outside, puffing happily on my cigarette. Then to my great dismay, I was approached by a middle aged woman dressed like a bar wench and her husband I assume, dressed like Robin hood. I didn't think much of it, till I heard the words "Oh, you are cute!" My face instantly turned red...

The lady walked up to me and asked me, "Have you met these?" Pointing lustfully at her medieval breast, I reply with an awkward "Haven't had the pleasure." Almost to fast for me to react, she starts pulling me in for a 'hug,' or what I assume is a hug. I play along, because everyone likes hugs... Worst mistake of my life, because half way to the hug, she grabs the back of my head. With hardly enough time to catch my breath and close my eyes, my face was plunged into a pile of wrinkly, sweaty breasts. Me being the gentleman I am, I made a little motorboat sound to make her think I wasn't dying to jump in a pool of hand sanitizer.

Food!!!

Aside from the slight feeling of molestation, it totally set up the rest of the day. I became thoroughly drunk afterwards, shared a cigarette and some rum with Jack Sparrow, and got my fill of giant turkey legs. I wouldn't of had it any other way, and I will definitely be going next year. With a much higher amount of pocket money.

But for today, magic with my best friend for his birthday, and getting ready to fly up to Indiana for vacation.

Bye nerds!!!

Renaissance Fair and Leftover Green Beer

2012-03-24T06:00:00.004-07:00

Teh Fair

Hey everyone! Tis Saturday, and your's truly is going to ye old renaissance fair. Bar wenches and archery ranges, costumes and the smell of pipe tobacco. I love it! If it weren't for my love of computers, I would have loved living a couple hundred years ago. Legally carrying a sword, and not worrying about making it as a successful computer scientist.

But wishful thinking is a waste of valuable time! I must find something to wear!

Digital Birthday

Oh and it was Mind Tour Studios Artist's birthday this weekend, and we gave him his present early! He is officially a Cintiq owner!

Only problem, we cannot find an adapter for his Macbook pro, so I have been letting him use my Elitebook. Regardless, it is awesome! He loves it, we love what he has been doing with it, and he will be converting all our paper sketches to digital very soon.
