Renegade Craft Fair is coming to Austin May 15 and 16!

The 1st Ever Renegade Craft Fair in Austin will be held May 15 + 16, 2010, indoors at the Palmer Events Center (900 Barton Springs Rd.) from 11am-7pm each day and feature over 200 indie-craft talents from Austin and all over the nation.

Blue Genie show opened tonight!

Saw a preview of the show this morning while adding items to my booth, looks really great this year! My friends and family will love the handmade local gifts they get this year, just like every year :-)
The opening party was tonight 6-10, and starting tomorrow/Thursday the 3rd show is open 10am-10pm EVERY DAY through the 24th. Shop early for best selection, artists will be continually re-stocking throughout event but with handmades and one-of-a-kinds if you love it, get it when you see it.

WHAT: Swap and Sew + Sweets: A Clothing and Craft Supply Swap + Yummy Bake Sale
WHEN: Saturday, September 5th, 12pm-6pm
WHERE: Space 12 - 3121 e. 12th St. 78702 (space12.org)
WHY: Have fun, get crafty and support the Space 12 Community Center and the Austin Public Library Youth Services "Sew What?" program.
HOW MUCH: $5 suggested donation

Clean out your closets and your craft supply drawers and come participate in a community swap! Bring any unwanted clothes - both adult and kids clothes welcome, and crafting supplies like fabric, thread, yarn, notions, buttons, etc. etc. Get rid of stuff you don't want and go home with new stuff that you love. Any suits or professional clothing and accessories left over at the end of the day will be donated to Dress for Success, a non-profit organization that helps disadvantaged women get dressed up for job interviews. Any crafty supplies left over will be donated to "Sew What?", an Austin Public Library Youth Services program. Everything else will be donated to a local charity shop. Bring your sewing machine or knitting needles or embroidery hoops or whatever and spend the afternoon hanging out with other crafty types fixing up your swap finds, having fun and sharing ideas. It is also a great way to recycle and upcycle! In case you get hungry, we will have an assortment of amazing treats available for you to buy and snack on. Donate a can of food and your treat is free! We will use part of the $5 suggested donation and bake sale proceeds to help buy new sewing machines for the library program.

"Handmade Nation (and director, Faythe Levine) will be coming to Austin the weekend of Sept 5-6. There will be loads of crafty happenings that weekend, so stay tuned for info.

Tentative plans include a book signing/part at Domy books on Sat. evening, two screenings on sunday and special crafty events Sunday afternoon at Alamo on South Lamar (where the screening will be held) as well as Q&A opportunities with Faythe.

There is a small number of special edition VIP tickets for the 2:30 screening. These tickets include a sweet swag bag chock full of goodies and more.

Since Easter is soon upon us, I've been seeing lots of articles and postings recently about natural egg dyeing (using vegetables or spices). Don't think I'll get to trying that this year with my little guy, but I wanted to share this blog post @DotatDabbled (dabbled dot org blog) that I came across:

Ike Needs Help...

Austin mama Kari Anne Roy's (Haiku Mama)(blog)son Ike needs help!
Rachel wrote: "By now, many of you have heard about Baby Ike here in Austin who is currently in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Dell Children's Hospital, sedated, on paralytic medications and recovering from an operation in which he received a tracheostomy. My Book, and Love Notes From The Universe

My friends Bernadette and Carrie at Slow Family Living have created My Book, one year's worth of pages that begin when you begin - on any day of the year:
"A day book, a journal, a list of gratitudes, to-dos and intentions, a place for you to put your insights, feelings, and your wishes, wants and dreams, and a tool for transforming your life, all in a completely succinct and welcoming format. I really enjoyed Carrie's Your Best Year Yet workshop (based on this book) and am using My Book as one of my tools to keep on track...

"We're all for strengthening the safety standards of mass-produced toys, clothes, and accessories made in China, and banning toxins like phthalates and lead. But this year, congress passed the ill-conceived Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act, a law which goes into effect in two months and will absolutely decimate the small toy manufacturers, independent artisans, and crafters who have already earned the public trust. The very same ones that we often feature here and in our yearly special edition gift guides.

With this act going into effect February 10 2009 so many people we love will be affected: Moms who sew beautiful handmade waldorf dolls out of home, artists who have spent decades hand-carving trucks and cars out of natural woods, that guy at the craft show who sold you the cute handmade puzzle--even larger US companies who employ local workers and have not once had any sort of safety issue will no longer be able to sell their goods. Not without investing tens of thousands of dollars into third-party testing and labeling, just to prove that toys that never had a single toxic chemical in them still don't have a single toxic chemical in them."

East Austin Studio Tour Nov 22 & 23rd

The EAST tour is Saturday Nov 22 and Sunday Nov 23 from 10-5. I will be showing my work at location #6b, with Dana Younger.

If you've never been on the EAST tour, you really should check it out, it's always been one of my favorite events (this is the first year I have participated).

This year is the 7th year and there are over 200 artists participating this year at 150 studios and galleries, all within a few square miles east of I-35.
