The only note I would make is that if in the website's history it has been transferred within the last year, the Whois details may still show the previous owner until the domain name is purchased for the coming year.

Once you find a good site that meets your criteria start monitoring and researching it. Check backlinks, investigate it’s history (try the Wayback Machine) and if the site has a community (forums, chatrooms, comment system, helpdesk, etc) see what goes on there. Check the site design, the structure of the links, headings, titles and keyword density. Check the site statistics if they are available.

Once you get a good feel for the site and you are interested in buying it’s time to contact the owner. You should be able to find an email address for the website owner somewhere on the site, if you can’t do a domain name lookup in the WhoIs database where you will find the email address for the person that registered the domain. Remember some websites will simply be hobbies for the owner which will make the purchasing process that much easier, while others will be fully fledged businesses making the transfer process just that little bit longer (think about business registration and incorporation detail transfers Ã¢â‚¬â€œ now consider you may not even be located in the same country!).

Start casually by introducing yourself to the owner, state you like the site and then slowly gauge how much interest the owner has in their web property. Eventually you are going to have to express your interest in making a purchase and you can spend as much time as you like communicating with the owner to negotiate a deal. Like with buying anything, the negotiation process can be laborious as you gather the information you need to calculate a price. This process can be swift and easy or slow and painful depending on your attitudes and the willingness of the owner to make the sale and release private information about their website. You will need to know details like website statistics, revenues, and costs, all information that the current owner may be hesitant to give out. Demonstrating your sincerity at this point will go a long way in helping you to divulge as much information as you can order to properly evaluate the website.

If you are lucky the owner of the site may simply be so excited that their website will make them some money that a few hundred dollars will seal the deal, others, the more savvy owners will realise the value of their asset and you might have more difficulty negotiating and will pay a higher price. Remember you are never under any obligation to buy so don’t force yourself to offer too much because there are plenty, literally millions, of other sites out there.

Each type of firearm has its place and purpose, if you know of a single weapon that can be used for all types of large and small game, defense and concealed carry with equal efficiency, without lacking in any area; let me know because I haven’t found it yet.

Before you start using your gun you need to know how to stay safe.

The following are basic principles:

The minimum age at which firearms and ammunition can be purchased or hired is 18 years old.

Keep your gun locked up in a cabinet, preferably hidden within a larger storage area. This prevents curious children, house guests or even burglars from accidentally mishandling your gun.

Keep your ammunition safe in a secured cupboard or out of reach of children. Firearms ammunition must be locked in a separate container to the gun.

Never point a gun at anybody, even if you know it is not loaded. It will scare somebody if you point any gun at them. Can you be absolutely sure that the gun is not loaded?

Don't leave bits of oily rag in the bores of the gun with the intent of preventing rust. If your gun is properly cleaned and stored, this won't help and you could forget the rag is there.

Never trust a safety catch - treat it only as a second line of defence because it could be faulty. No-one was ever shot by an open, empty gun.

Transport your gun safely and lock it in the boot or place it in the back of an estate car under a cover like travel rugs or coats.

Handguns were created to arm those who needed their hands free for other purposes. Handguns are useful as backup weapons and for concealed carry but for the most part they are of limited use.

It is best to understand the limitations of a handgun before you put too much faith in its abilities. A rifle or shotgun beats a handgun when things turn bad, but unfortunately the handgun is likely what you will have on you at the time.

There has much debate over the years about stopping power of the various handgun rounds. The usual contention sported by most “experts” is that size matters and this is true to a point, but it is not the only objective to be considered in the stopping power debate.

Shot placement and penetration are of more importance than the size of the round being used. The bullet must hit a vital target area and have enough penetration to reach the vital organs in that area to achieve any chance of a one shot stop.

There are many handguns available that will serve the purpose of a portable, easy to carry concealable weapon. The four calibers to look for include the 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP and the .357 magnum. Beretta, Browning, Colt, Ruger, SIG Arms, Glock, Taurus, Smith & Wesson and several other manufacturers make weapons that will serve you well. It all comes down to your skill level, needs and budget.

I have carried a stainless steel Ruger Mark II with a 5-1/2-inch bull barrel for years while tending my trap line. One cold December morning as I topped a small hill, I spotted a large bobcat caught in one of my dirt hole sets about 45 yards from my position.

I quickly took aim with the aid of a large oak tree, and squeezed off a round, the Winchester Power Point struck the cat right behind the front shoulder-blade, he jumped into the air with a twitch and was dead before hitting the ground. A good quality .22 caliber pistol is a most useful survival tool, and every home/retreat should have at least one.

How to Choose a firearm.

Whether you are buying your very first gun or just adding to a large collection, there are many things to consider. The MOST important thing to consider before I get into everything else, is that the firearm fits your hands and body. Hands that are too small for a particular handgun or hands that are too large for a smaller handgun will likely require the readjustment of your grip in between rounds, which is unacceptable. Fingers that are too short to reach the trigger or too long, beyond the trigger will pull the barrel's direction one way or the other during the trigger squeeze. Rifles, shotguns or some larger handguns that are too heavy or hard to use will likely shorten your practice sessions etc.. So, first you must purchase a gun that fits your physical characteristics.

1. Is the gun just for recreational target practice? If so, I recommend a .22 Long Rifle caliber in a handgun or rifle. Go with a popular and longstanding manufacturer such as Sturm-Ruger, Winchester, Marlin or Remington. The Sturm-Ruger 10-.22 rifle is a perfect choice.

2. Is the gun for home defense? I recommend a 12 gauge shotgun with a 20" barrel, or a .38 Special revolver. Semi-automatics should be considered for defense after you have become proficient with a firearm. I personally have both. I own a Mossberg 590 A1 with their marine-coat finish. It's a nine-shot 12 gauge shotgun with just a twenty inch barrel. In addition, both my wife and I have a Ruger GP-100 .357 magnum revolver and a Ruger SP-101 also in .357 magnum.

I don't usually recommend semi-autos for "first-timers". For a home defense shotgun, I recommend models from Mossberg, Winchester and Remington. For a revolver, I recommend models from Sturm-Ruger, Dan Wesson and Taurus International. Semi-autos are okay for first time shooters, IF you are going to take the time to know the pistol inside AND out and practice with it regularly to the point where operating it is instinctive.
I recommend that you use the "pistol grip only" shotguns just for "showing off" at the club and not for serious home defense. I recommend full shoulder stocked shotguns for home defense with a barrel not longer than 20".
Guns used for defensive purposes should be able to reliably cycle at least 500 cartridges without a single malfunction. Your life may well depend upon it.

3. Is the gun for concealed carry? I recommend revolvers or semi-automatics with a 4.5" barrel or less. Most barrels of longer length are harder to conceal. For concealed carry, I could recommend hundreds of models of quality firearms. However, if I was to settle on a single caliber and model, it would be one of the Sig Sauer semi-automatics in .40 S&W caliber, perhaps the Sig Sauer P 226.

4. Which gun is right for my body? People of slight build should not consider the most powerful firearms in each category. Large shotguns and rifles might have to be cut down to properly fit those of small stature or small hands.

5. Will the gun be diligently cared for? Stainless steel will not corrode and oxidize as readily as "blued" steel. You should make sure that you keep your firearms in top condition. Do not allow them to corrode and degrade to the point where their reliability may be in question. Plus, it is EMBARRASSING to take out a firearm to show to an interested dinner guest and have it be all dusty, filthy or rusty. :-)

6. How much are you prepared to spend? An inexpensive bargain firearm may not function properly and reliably. You usually get what you pay for when it comes to a gun purchase. Be prepared to spend between $300 and $1200 for a quality firearm. If you spend under $100.00 for a small .25 ACP, you may be compromising too much!!!

How you answer these questions, will determine the direction your purchase should go.

Rifle, shotgun or handgun? Do you know which type of firearm you want? As a first gun for a child, I always recommend a single shot .22 cal rimfire rifle. A single shot .22 bolt-action rimfire is easy to learn and will not be too overpowering for a child. The child should be made completely aware of all the safety rules and loading/unloading procedures.

Make sure the child knows the manual for his/her new gun and keeps it in good condition. He/she should also be taught to keep the firearm and ammo locked up and secure until it is time to head out to the range.

Shoppers looking for the cheapest airfare can learn something from stand-up comedians: It's all about timing.
Start shopping (not buying) early; typically, airlines start actively managing their cheapest seats about four months before departure.

But don't buy too early; tickets purchased before this four month window will generally be priced at a midtier level. An exception: shopping for busy holiday times (Thanksgiving, Christmas); due to current price hikes and ever-increasing fuel surcharges, you may want to purchase these tickets earlier than usual, to lock in the price. While few domestic fares require purchase 21 days before departure, the cheapest tickets often still require 14-day advance purchase. Toget tickets before the cheapest seats sell out, buy a month or two in advance.

When to buy: Pelletier says, “Recent fare analysis by the Airlines Reporting Corporation, which processes ticket transactions for airlines and travel agencies, reported that over the past four years passengers paid the lowest price for domestic flights when buying just about six weeks in advance.”

Ticket prices are highest on weekends, on average, according to online travel agencies, fare trackers and airline pricing executives.

When's the best time to buy? Travel experts have long said Tuesday is when sales are most often in place, which is true. An analysis of domestic fares shows that Wednesday also has good -- and occasionally better -- ticket prices. Be flexible in scheduling your flight. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are typically the cheapest days to fly; late-night flights ('red-eyes'), very early morning flights and flights with at least one stop tend to be discounted as well.

The day you depart can more heavily influence the fare than the day you buy. If your plans are flexible, travel on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday and you typically find prices far below Monday, Friday or Sunday flights. Sale discounts are bigger on offpeak days than peak days as well. Higher demand for peak days leads to higher prices.

Find out whether the stated fare is the cheapest, and inquire about other options when speaking to the airline reservations clerk. If you're using the Internet, check more than one Web site and compare rates.

If You’re Traveling …

At a Normal Time (Not During the Holidays or High Season)

Non-peak domestic flights present one of your best shots at timing your ticket-buying. This will be easiest if it’s a route you’re familiar with and you have a sense of what a good price is.

Here’s your plan of attack:

Check available tickets eight to ten weeks before your departure. If the flights aren’t too booked, wait until six weeks prior.
At six weeks: If the price looks good, go ahead and book. If the tickets look a little high but your flight is pretty full, buy anyway because fares will probably only go up. If the price is high and your flight is pretty empty, you can choose to wait a week or two to see if prices decrease.
Consult resources like Kayak’s fare chart and Bing’s price predictor to see if your flight’s price is likely to go down. Put a fare alert on a few different airlines.
Right before you’re two weeks out, buy your tickets. If you book within 14 days, airlines assume you’re a business traveler and will charge you a premium.

To a Popular Location in the High Season

Disney World during summer break. Aspen during ski season. Anywhere warm during the winter. When you’re trying to go somewhere at a popular time, buy tickets well in advance.

When to buy: One to three months in advance—preferably three.

Bonus tip: Prices will be lowest if you avoid the usual Friday to Sunday weekend cycle. If you’re going for a weekend, try using the “weekend trip” option under the “flexible trip” search on most web resources like Kayak. This lets you define weekend however you want, whether Friday to Sunday or Saturday to Monday, so you can find the cheapest options.

Around a Holiday

Pelletier told me Thanksgiving is the absolute hardest to buy tickets for, because everyone is trying to fly out and return on the same days (Wednesday to Sunday). Christmas is more flexible because people choose different days off. Notice when holidays fall midweek. For example, if July 4th falls on Wednesday (like this year) some people take time off before, some after. This allows you more flexibility in buying tickets.

When to buy: At least three months out. Aim to buy Thanksgiving tickets the Tuesday after Labor Day; don’t book too early because rates will usually come down at least a little after the summer, when rates are high because gas is expensive.

Bonus tip: If you can, avoid Sunday flights and traditional travel days. That could mean leaving before and coming back later than most people, or flying on the holiday itself. Pelletier told us you can often save 50% on a ticket by flying Christmas Eve or day. “We saved $300 per ticket around Thanksgiving for our family of four,” she told us, “by flying out the Saturday before Thanksgiving and coming back the Saturday after. Not everyone can swing that with their work schedules, so my advice is to leave Thanksgiving day and return on Saturday for cheaper fares.”

Over the Summer

If you’re looking to travel this summer, book your flights right away because there will almost certainly be more fare increases to come. Extra hint: Pelletier recommends taking earlier morning flights because rain delays are a lot more common in the summer.

When to buy: Three months before your departure, depending on where you’re going. More than any other season, buy early because gas prices are notoriously high. Prices usually only go up as the summer progresses.

Bonus tip: Extend the summer for better prices—if you can book your vacation for May or September, you’re likely to save as much as 25-50% on air and hotel. You can also find deals when certain regions have slow seasons because of school schedules. For instance, Northeast schools are usually in session through mid-June, so beaches in New England offer deals in early June. Southeastern schools start back in mid-August, so beach destinations in South Carolina and Florida may offer late August deals.

One of the iron laws of travel is that fuel prices rise in the summer. Higher temperatures make butane and other cheap and popular petrol additives evaporate, causing smog, so air-quality regulations prevent their usage during the summer. (See Slate's explainer for more on petrol fuel blends.) Also, more Americans and Europeans go on holiday in summer, so demand rises for airline and train tickets.

During the Fall

Autumn isn’t typically leisure travel season since kids are back in school, so there are a lot of great fare sales, particularly last-minute ones around late September or October. If you are open and flexible, this is a great season for an off-peak leisure trip to a mountainous area or somewhere off-season like Mexico.

When to buy: You can wait longer and be more open to last-minute deals (like two to four weeks in advance) in the fall. If you need to go somewhere in particular, though, buy six weeks in advance so you aren’t gambling.

Bonus tip: Avoid fall convention hotspots like Las Vegas, NYC and Orlando. A great time for a cheap leisure trip is between Thanksgiving and Christmas. For trips during that time, start looking in September.

In the Winter

Aside from the obvious winter holidays, traveling in the winter will depend a lot on where you’re going. If it’s a warm getaway, you’re buying in the high season. If you’re going somewhere less popular (read: to and from colder locales) you’ll have more leeway.

When to buy: If you’re going skiing, book extremely early because ski season is so short and flights to tiny ski towns are often small—at least three months in advance, if not as early as September! If you’re traveling somewhere warm, give yourself three months. If you’re going to an unpopular destination, you can play closer to the bone and try to time the best prices. (Check out the section about off-peak travel for the plan of attack.)

In the Springtime

Spring is pretty expensive across the board because of spring break and Easter holidays. Spring breaks are different for college kids, families, public schools, private schools … Find out when spring breaks are in your region and try to avoid those dates like the plague. You can search your county’s school district’s website for the dates.

When to buy: If you’re traveling any time during your area’s spring break, at least three months in advance. If not, you can look at how full your flight is and try to time your purchase for the best prices.

A savings bond is a treasury security for investors. In essence, investors are loaning the government money. They are issued both as paper bonds and electronic savings bonds. They cannot be traded but can be redeemed after only one year. The Treasury Department has a nice website for buying savings bonds. The process is easy and fast. If you’re internet-savvy, you can be the proud owner of a savings bond in less than 10 minutes. If you’re still figuring things out online, it may take 20 minutes.

Honestly, I was amazed at how easy the site is – in fact I’m a little concerned about it.

First you’ll create an account which they verify via email. You just type in some basic personal information. You also link a bank account to your TreasuryDirect account (no verification required). It seemed like they aren’t taking security as seriously as many of the online banks when you set up a link. Of course, it is the government so presumably they have the power to fix any mistakes.

Once you’re logged-in, you can buy a variety of Treasury securities. There is even a “Purchase Express” form on the welcome page. You can simply enter a bond-type and dollar amount and you’re off.

In my humble opinion, the Treasury should do a better job of verifying orders to purchase these securities. You have to do a lot of digging to find the fine print that details minimum holding periods and cash-out penalties. Be sure you understand what you’re getting into before you do anything on that site.

If you want to use your mobile phone abroad, but don't fancy the roaming charges, then an effective way to make savings is by buying a local pre-paid Sim-card, or a pre-paid Global Sim-card.

What is a Global Sim-card

Global Sim-cards usually offer cheaper international calls and texts than a UK Sim-card. However, this depends on what country you are in.Global Sim-cards allow you to roam across a number of different countries, on different networks, with a single Sim-card.

For instance, Global Sim-cards offer significantly cheaper rates across Europe and you will usually be able to receive texts free of charge. However, in Asian countries, such as Thailand, the cost of making calls is almost the same as roaming with a UK Sim-card.

International Sim-cards

The other option is to buy a foreign Sim-card that's local to whatever country you are travelling to, either online or once you're inside the country.

A foreign Sim-card, in its respective country, will work just like a UK Sim-card does in the UK. So you’re guaranteed much cheaper calls to local numbers, but you will have to pay extra to call internationally.

The other benefit to using a local foreign Sim-card, is that you should never have to pay for receiving calls from the UK (though the person calling you will have to pay extra to make an international call!).

Should I buy a local Sim-card or a Global Sim-card?

Local foreign Sim-cards and Global Sim-cards both have benefits and drawbacks, and which one you buy depends on your personal requirements.

Global Sim-cards offer good value for money if you're travelling across more than one European country, as the rates in Europe are usually cheap and you won't have to change Sim-cards when you enter different countries.

But if, for instance, you are visiting just one country in Asia, such as Thailand or India, then it might be a better idea to buy a local Sim-card, as you only need coverage for a single country and Global Sim call rates are more expensive in Asia.

When it comes to Global Sim-cards you really should check what rates will apply in the countries you're visiting, this information should be available on the seller's website.

You also need to think about who you will be calling while abroad. If you plan on making more calls to local numbers then a local Sim-card is a better option. If you expect friends and family to call you from home then a Global Sim-card will usually minimise their costs more than a local Sim will.

It is also worth thinking about how you will top-up your Sim-card. A Global Sim-card will usually allow you to top-up online or over the phone with a credit or debit card. For local Sim-cards you will probably need to top-up via vouchers brought in-store.

Another advantage to Global Sim-cards is that if something goes wrong while topping-up, or you need help using phone services, the customer support will always be in English.

How do I choose an international SIM Card?

The two major factors when choosing an international SIM Card are quality and price. And as you can guess, the higher the quality generally the higher the price. There is no free lunch with International SIM Cards as with just about everything else in this world, however compared to your domestic carrier roaming rates you can generally save 30-80% on roaming, so for most of us it is worth it.

Service Quality

Quality of service varies greatly when purchasing international SIM Cards and can make all the difference when abroad. This is the “rub” when looking at all the rates; you need to make sure you are comparing apples to apples in quality of service. SIM Card quality can be segmented into two parts.

1) Carrier International SIM Cards.

The Carrier International SIM Cards are purchased by wholesalers from carriers at discounts based on the ability to drive significant traffic on the network. The quality of these SIM Cards are excellent and vary little from carrier to carrier as they are well capitalized and have invested the required upfront capital to have the right equipment in place to complete calls. Carriers compete heavily in domestic markets and quality of service is a top 3 attribute when customers choose their provider and hence they are forced to focus on quality.

2) 3rd Party SIM Cards (Non Carrier).

3rd Party SIM Cards are companies that purchase and maintain a switch and have roaming agreements with the carriers to provide access and service on carrier networks. In the case of an outgoing call, the traffic goes through the 3rd party’s switch and is then passed to the carrier to be terminated. The issue here is that often the switches and the connections to the carriers are not robust enough to handle all the traffic volume; they don’t have the required speeds, and / or don’t have redundancy to ensure traffic flow when servers go down. All of this requires immense amounts of capital which these smaller companies don’t have access to or are not willing to spend. The quality of these providers does not meet that of carrier SIM Cards in my opinion. At least I have not found one yet that does. If you do, please let me know as we are always looking to provide the best value products to our customers.

Costs

As Carrier SIM Cards are better quality there is a slightly higher usage cost generally associated with them. Savings of up to 90% can still be realized depending on where you are traveling to. 3rd Party SIM Cards can provide even more savings if you are willing to put up with less than perfect quality. Often these better rates are seen in the form of free incoming minutes for specific countries.

Risks

There are risks as well to consider with 3rd party providers; an additional issue with 3rd party solutions is bankruptcy and major outages. Over the last year 2 of the 6 major suppliers, United Mobile and 09 Mobile have suspended service for months at a time and left hundreds of thousands of roamers without service. Neither at the time of writing this are providing service.

In the end it really depends on what you are looking for. Is quality or price more important to you? My experience when speaking with customers is that they generally buy the cheaper product hoping there is a free lunch. After using it they come to their senses and buy the product that is a little more expensive but something they can rely on when traveling.

What is Marmite?

Marmite is a thick, sticky, brown spread made from yeast extract. Yeast extract, which is a byproduct of the brewing industry is vegetarian, gluten free, and has a high nutritional content. Marmite is popular throughout the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and South Africa and is praised for its characteristically pungent flavor. Marmite is well known for evoking a love or hate reaction, which the manufacturer fully embraces and even features in it sadvertising campaign.

Marmite History

In the late 19th century the German scientist, Justus Leibig, discovered that when brewer’s yeast was concentrated, it formed a vegetarian paste that closely resembled meat extract. This extract was first commercially produced in 1902 when the Marmite Food Company Limited was formed.

Dry Ice is Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in solid form. It is a translucent substance which has a density of 97.6 lb/cu.ft. at atmospheric pressure.

What is Dry Ice?

The manufacturing process of Dry Ice involves two steps. First, pure CO2 is expanded to a reduced pressure in a hydraulic press. The CO2 "snow" that is produced in this expansion is then compressed into blocks of Dry Ice. These blocks weigh approximately 52 lbs. each and measure 10"x10"x11".

When CO2 is in its solid state, Dry Ice, it must be kept at -109 degrees. When Dry Ice is exposed to air, it converts (sublimates) back to its natural state, a gas.

Due to its extreme low temperature, dry ice is used in a variety of applications. Industrially, dry ice is used to shrink metal into tight fittings. Commercially, dry ice can be used in a number of projects, everything from removing old tile flooring to shipping frozen food products. In addition to its industrial and commercial uses, dry ice is ideal for creating a freezer away from home. Pack your cooler with dry ice for road trips, tailgating, concerts, and camping. When transporting dry ice in a cooler, always remember to keep it in a well-ventilated area; as the dry ice sublimates, you want to allow the carbon dioxide gas to escape.

Dry Ice Uses?

The most common use of dry ice is to preserve food.

It is frequently used to package items that need to remain cold or frozen, such as ice cream or biological samples.

Dry ice can be used to flash freeze food but does not alter the taste or quality of such foods. For the same reason, it can prevent or retard food oils and fats from becoming rancid.

When dry ice is placed in water sublimation is accelerated, and low-sinking, dense clouds of smoke-like fog are created. This is used in fog machines, attheaters, discothèques, haunted house attractions, and nightclubs for dramatic effects. Unlike most artificial fog machines, in which fog rises like smoke, fog from dry ice hovers above the ground. Dry ice is useful in theater productions that require dense fog effects.

Dry ice can be used as bait to trap mosquitoes, bedbugs, and other insects, due to their attraction to carbon dioxide.

Dry ice blasting used for cleaning

Dry ice can be used for loosening asphalt floor tiles making it easy to pry off.

One of the largest mechanical uses of dry ice is blast cleaning. Dry ice pellets are shot out of a nozzle with compressed air. This can remove residues from industrial equipment. Examples of materials being removed include ink, glue, oil, paint, mold and rubber.

Dry ice can also be used seasonally for special effects. To make a foggy punch bowl that’s perfect for Halloween, you will need a large bowl for the dry ice, a smaller bowl for the punch, hot water, and dry ice. Throughout the entire process, do not let the dry ice come in contact with either bare skin or the punch. Using gloves, place a few handfuls of dry ice pellets into the larger bowl and fill it half way with hot water. Add your punch to the smaller of the two bowls, making sure that the punch does not come in direct contact with the dry ice. Float the smaller bowl filled with punch in the larger bowl containing the dry ice/hot water mixture. To maintain the fog effect, periodically add more dry ice and hot water to the bottom bowl. For an extra Halloween kick, use a cauldron as the outer large bowl. Float the smaller punch bowl inside the cauldron. Remember, always wear gloves when handling dry ice!

How long does Dry Ice last?

Dry Ice should be used as soon as bought or kept in a well insulated cooler. Dry Ice will "sublimate" at a rate of approximately 10 pounds every 24 hours. A 52 pound block is sufficient to keep food frozen, in a cooler, for about 6-7 days. You will need to purchase Dry Ice as close to when you plan to use it as possible, as Dry Ice will not keep. Dry Ice starts "sublimating" as soon as it's manufactured.
How do you use Dry Ice?

For keeping material frozen, place the Dry Ice in the cooler on top of the frozen material (as cold goes down). Close the lid and do not open until necessary to minimize loss. Dry Ice will not harm frozen food.

Dry ice should never be handled with your bare hands!! Always wear gloves when using dry ice!
I was lucky enough to find dry ice for sale in pellet form - if you are able, try to get pellets instead of a block of dry ice.

I wanted to be able to quickly add multiple pellets of dry ice to my water bottle to avoid handling them too much or wasting smoke.

Taking a small sheet of tissue paper, I placed a few pellets in a straight line that was roughly the length of the bottle. I rolled them up in the tissue and twisted the ends, making dry ice "cigars". When I wanted to create the smoke effect, I just dropped two or three of these dry ice packs into the bottle. The water quickly dissolved the paper and mixed with the dry ice almost instantly.

I put all of the dry ice rolls into a thermal lunch bag, which kept them cool, and wore it over my shoulder inside the costume.

Making dry ice

Solid carbon dioxide is known as dry ice. It sublimes at –78°C becoming an extremely cold gas. It is often used in theatres or nightclubs to produce clouds (looking a bit like smoke). Because it is denser than the air, it stays low. It cools the air and causes water vapour in the air to condense into tiny droplets – hence the clouds.
It is also useful in the physics (and chemistry) laboratory.

Safety

Dry ice can be dangerous if it is not handled properly. Wear eye protection and gauntlet-style leather gloves when making or handling solid carbon dioxide.

Uses

Dry ice has many uses. As well as simply watching it sublime, you could also use it for cloud chambers, dry ice pucks, and cooling thermistors and metal wire resistors in resistance experiments. It can also be used in experiments related to the gas laws.

Obtaining dry ice

There are two main methods of getting dry ice.

1 Using a cylinder of carbon dioxide

It is possible to make the solid 'snow' by expansion before the lesson begins and to store it in a wide-necked Thermos flask.

Remember that the first production of solid carbon dioxide from the cylinder may not produce very much, because the cylinder and its attachments have to cool down.

What type of cylinder, where do I get CO2, and what will it cost?

A CO2 gas cylinder should be fitted with a dip tube (this is also called a ‘siphon type’ cylinder). This enables you to extract from the cylinder bottom so that you get CO2 in its liquid form, not the vapour.

NOTE: A plain black finish to the cylinder indicates that it will supply vapour from above the liquid. A cylinder with two white stripes, diametrically opposite, indicates it has a siphon tube and is suitable for making dry ice.

A cylinder from British Oxygen will cost about £80 per year for cylinder hire and about £40 each time you need to get it filled up. (The refill charge can be reduced by having your chemistry department cylinders filled up at the same time.)

Don't be tempted to get a small cylinder - it will run out too quickly.

If the school has its own CO2 cylinder there will be no hire charge, but you will need to have it checked from time to time (along with fire extinguisher checks). Your local fire station or their suppliers may prove a good source for refills.

A dry ice attachment for the cylinder

Dry ice disks can be made using an attachment that fits directly on to a carbon dioxide cylinder with a siphon tube. Section 13.3.1 of the CLEAPSS Laboratory Handbook explains the use of this attachment (sometimes called Snowpacks or Jetfreezers). This form is most useful for continuous cloud chambers and low-friction pucks.

2 Buying blocks or pellets

Blocks of solid carbon dioxide or granulated versions of it can be obtained fairly easily with a search on the Internet. Local stage supply shops or Universities may be able to help. It usually comes in expanded foam packing; you can keep it in this packing in a deep freeze for a few days.

The dry ice pellets come in quite large batches. However, they have a number of uses in science lessons so it is worth trying to co-ordinate the activities of different teachers to make best use of your bulk purchase.
