Every day I am looking for new and new methods of earning money from home. I am reading various blogs and trying to stay as close to the topic of earning money online as possible.

So in one of the latest comments I was asked to give more information on making money online with professional article writing and blogging.

Much has been written about how to launch an E-book to maximise sales with a big bang in the time surrounding a launch. I wrote a few weeks back about my own $72,000 E-book launch and received a lot of feedback from readers on their own big launches.

One day, your child will need to earn a living. Kids can get an edge on the work world by starting early and in doing so they will gain valuable experience working with different people, learning about managing money, have some money to spend once they get older, or save for college.
A lemonade stand, mowing lawns, baby sitting, and doing odd jobs are popular ways that kids can earn money while learning some important life skills.

But first ask yourself, is your child ready to work?
Do they have the time, and it won't interfere with their school work? If they are ready, then here are some ideas for kids to make money.

JOBS FOR KIDS

BABY SITTER

If you child likes younger kids, then a baby sitter is a popular choice. Parents often need a good and reliable baby sitter to watch their kids. This position can be even expanded into a baby sitting service, by joining together a group of people who can offer baby sitting services to all the parents in the neighborhood.

PARENTS HELPER

A parents helper is similar to a baby sitter. However, if your child is too young to baby sit on their own, then a job helping parents is a good opportunity. They can help watch someone's kids, assist with the feeding, playing, or doing chores around the house. Later, once your child is older, they would likely have gained some references for regular baby sitting work.

HOUSE CLEANING

Instead of a parents helper, your child could simply do house cleaning. There are many chores that would be suitable such as vacuuming, dusting, etc.

LEMONADE STAND

Everyone is familiar with the old fashioned lemonade stand. Of course, this is a seasonal business, depending on your location. During other times of the year, it could be a warm apple cider business -- but be careful if your child needs to handle hot items. Also try selling coffee, donuts, snack bags, or other food items. If possible, set up a booth at a local community fair, or sale if allowed.

In addition to food, there is the possibility of selling other types of items. Is your child good at crafts? Then have them make their own artwork to sell. Sometimes, a combination of food and items makes a good business.

CAR WASHING

Car washing is a needed service in many communities. Have your child get together with a few friends to offer to wash local cars. As an addition to this business, they can sell items mentioned in the lemonade stand section above while people wait for their car to be washed. See what other professional car washes charge in your area, and price the services competitively.

ANIMAL CARETAKER

If you child enjoys animals, then try an animal caretaker business. This might involve walking dogs, dog washing, or general grooming.

HOUSE AND PET SITTING

If a neighbor is taking a trip or vacation, then taking care of their house and/or pets may be an opportunity. This may include watering plants, and any other chores they may need.

LANDSCAPING

Cutting grass, weeding, trimming, planting flowers, and other landscaping jobs are abundant. Scan the neighborhood for homes that need landscaping services. In the spring, offer to plant flowers, or do winter clean-up.

SNOW REMOVAL

In the winter time, many people need to have their driveways or sidewalks shoveled. This job works best when a group of kids can work together shoveling several houses. Create a business, and make arrangements to shovel peoples houses before the snow storm.

ADDITIONAL IDEAS

- Ask what kids can do in their own home, such as writing little stories that they can sell to their family and friends.

- Kids can create their own jewelry to sell, or decorate interesting rocks.

- Raking leaves.

TIPS FOR RUNNING THE BUSINESS

For many of these jobs, have your child print and hand out flyers to be distributed in the neighborhood. As the business grows, references or work previously done could be quoted.

Giving out free samples is always a good way to attract business. For services, offer coupons for new potential customers.

SAFETY AND OTHER POINTS

Most important for any of these jobs, is making sure your child is safe, so make sure they are old enough to follow important safety guidelines including:

Make sure you always know where they are.

Avoid going door to door by themselves.

Recommend that they do jobs that they like to do. Be sure they are mentally prepared and committed to do the work they need to do and promise to do.

If there is a cost in setting up the business, make sure they have enough money and know where the money is going to come from.

All these jobs should not interfere with normal school work or completing homework for school.

Help them set fair prices for the work they are doing.

Tell them to come to you for advice if they need it.

I pushed them for a figure – what does ‘full time’ mean for you?

They thought for a moment and said that they could live off $30,000 USD a year (note: they wouldn’t have minded earning more but would be able to quit their current job at this kind of rate).

$30,000 a year sounds like a lot to make from a blog – especially when you’re starting out and are yet to make a dollar. To this blogger it seemed so overwhelming that she had almost convinced herself that it was not possible.

Advice for Becoming a Full Time Blogger

My response was threefold:

1. Don’t Give Up Your Day Job…. Yet

It is possible to make $30,000 a year blogging, but it’s unlikely to happen over night. Keep your feet on the ground and your expectations reasonable. IF it happens (and there are no guarantees) it is almost certainly going to take some time.

2. Be Specific

Saying that you want to be full time as a blogger is a great goal – but it’s not really specific enough. This is why I wanted the blogger I was chatting with to name a figure. For her full time was $30,000 – for others it could be more or less – the amount is not the point, the point is that you need something more concrete to work towards so that you’re able to measure where you’re at.

For me when I decided I want to go full time as a blogger I decided that I wanted to aim for $50,000 (Aussie Dollars) in a year as the bench mark (at that time $50,000 was around 36,000 USD). That’s around what I would have been earning in my current main job if I had been doing that full time (I was actually working a number of part time jobs at the time as well as studying part time).

Knowing what I was aiming for helped me in a number of ways when it came to getting to that goal.

3. Break it down into something more Achievable

$30,000 USD still sounds big when you’re a new blogger – and in some ways it is. However there are different ways of thinking about that figure. Lets break it down in the way that I used to look at my target.

$30,000 a year = $576.92 per week
$30,000 a year = $82.19 a day
$30,000 a year = $3.42 an hour

We could break it down on a monthly or on a minute by minute basis if we wanted to (in fact I did do it by minute from time to time for fun) – but the exercise is really about helping you to see that perhaps your big goal is a little more achievable if you are to break it down. Making $82.19 somehow seems a little bit easier to me than making $30,000 (or is that just me?).

OK – the other way that I used to break down my goal that I found really helpful to me was to do it based upon what I need to achieve to meet that target. For me I would usually look at the daily figure – in this case $82.19.

What do I need to do to make $82.19 a day ($30,000 a year)?

Well there’s a number of ways that much. Lets look at a few:

CPC Ads – lets say we’re running mainly AdSense on our blog and that the average click is paying 5 cents. That equates to 1643 clicks on AdSense ads (note: AdSense also runs CPM ads so it’s not quite as simple as saying you need 1643 clicks… but to keep this simple lets just go with that).
CPM Ads – lets say that we’re running CPM ads on our blog and we’re being paid $2 CPM per ad unit and we had 3 ads on each page (which is effectively $6 CPM per page). This would mean we’d need 13,000 page impressions.
Monthly Sponsorships – one way to sell ads directly to advertisers is to sell ads on a month by month basis as a sponsorship. To make $30k in a year you need to sell $2500 a month in ads. You might have 6 ad spots on your blog so this is 6 advertisers at $416.66 per advertiser per month.
Low Commission Affiliate Products – Lets say we were promoting affiliate products from a site like Amazon and your commissions were on average about 40 cents per sale. To earn $82.19 you’d need to sell 205 products.
High Commission Affiliate Products – In this case you might be promoting ebooks and earning $8 a copy (that’s what you’d earn selling my 31DBBB ebook per commission). The math is simple on this one – you’d had to sell around 10 e-books a day.
Really Big Commission Affiliate Products – of course e-books are not the biggest product out there to promote – there are products like training courses where you can earn hundreds per sale. Lets take one that might pay out $300 for a yearly membership on a bigger product. In this case you need to sell 8 of these per month.
Selling Your Own E-book – got your own product, perhaps an e-book, to sell from your blog? At $19.95 a sale you need to sell just over 4 of these a day. You can do the sums on cheaper or more expensive products.

Of course there are many many other ways to make money from blogs. Subscriptions, donations, paid reviews, selling yourself as a consultant….. etc. You can do the sums for yourself on your own model.

I know that some of the above figures still sound out of reach for bloggers – 1643 clicks on your AdSense ads sounds massive to a new blogger…. and it is – but do keep in mind that you can combine some of the above (in fact I’d recommend you diversify your income).

You might run 2 ad networks on your site, promote Amazon affiliates, sell your own e-book and promote someone’s membership course.

Looking back on my own figures for around the time when I hit my $50,000 AUD (around $100 USD a day) goal and for me at that time my income mix looked a like this (going from memory here):

AdSense: $35
Chitika: $20
Private Ad Sales: $20
Amazon: $15
Other Affiliate Commissions: $10

Note: I didn’t achieve this milestone until I’d been blogging for over 2 years (I blogged for the first year without trying to make money).

This didn’t happen over night (let me emphasize this – blogging for money is neither quick nor is it easy money) but I really found that breaking things down into more bite sized pieces helped me to stay motivated but also helped me to identify what I needed to work on in order to reach my goals (and for me to quite my day job).

Again – don’t quit your day job yet (in fact you may not want to quit it even when you reach your goal – it can be good to have a back up plan) but do work hard at being specific about your blogging goals and attempt to break it down in a way that helps you move towards them.

Dell seems to have achieved a very good understanding of Twitter and social media in general. This morning, a representative shared some statistics regarding the hardware manufacturer's achievements, and by most standards, they're extremely impressive.

Back in late June, Dell announced that its presence on Twitter had generated $3 million in sales. Lionel Menchaca, the company's chief blogger, wrote on Direct2Dell today, "In total, Dell's global reach on Twitter has resulted in more than $6.5 million in revenue." Obviously, that's a significant increase.

Menchaca also wrote, "If you look at our aggregate presence on social media networks plus our own community sites, our worldwide community has grown to more than 3.5 million people across the social web, including places like Twitter, Facebook, Direct2Dell and IdeaStorm. That's roughly a fan base the size of the population of Chicago." Which is impressive.

It's only when you put these statistics next to other Dell-related numbers that they look a little weak. Dell claims to have 2 billion contacts with customers every year "via phone, e-mail, etc.," for example, so 3.5 million's not much in comparison.

Also, Dell brought in $61.1 billion in revenue last year, making $6.5 million not even a drop in the bucket (or about 0.01 percent of that sum, if you want to get specific).

There’s no shortage of folks who have been saying that social media is the next big thing. Dell jumped into the social media space more than three years ago. In those days, I didn't spend a lot of time thinking about the larger implications of what we were doing. Back then, it was all about connecting and responding to customers and just making social media work. After starting with a blog, we moved on to IdeaStorm, then into Twitter and Facebook. We built a Flickr page (which recently passed 1 million views) and a Dell YouTube channel to facilitate the sharing of picture and video content we produced for Direct2Dell.

Dell.com, Support.Dell.com and the Dell Community Forum all pre-dated our social media activity. Looking at our online success in all those places, the fundamentals were clear for us. The web was an ideal place for us to connect directly with customers. Social media brought that and something more—a way to listen, learn and engage with customers, with a clear emphasis on the engage part of the equation, It allows us to further those direct connections with customers while also sharing what we are all about, making technology work, work better and harder for you.

Today, as more and more customers are embracing social media, our thinking about Dell and community has evolved beyond simply driving customers to our own sites to connecting those conversations where they happen on the web (and in the real world too). If you look at our aggregate presence on social media networks plus our own community sites, our worldwide community has grown to more than 3.5 million people across the social web, including places like Twitter, Facebook, Direct2Dell and IdeaStorm. That’s roughly a fan base the size of the population of Chicago. And at this stage is only a small part of the overall 2 billion contacts we have with customers worldwide every year via phone, e-mail, etc.

Our @DellOutlet is now close to 1.5 million followers on Twitter, and back in June we indicated that @DellOutlet earned $3 million in revenue from Twitter. Today it's not just Dell Outlet having success connecting with customers on Twitter. In total, Dell’s global reach on Twitter has resulted in more than $6.5 million in revenue. In fact our Brazilian and Canadian accounts are growing rapidly too – and it was Canadian tweeters who asked to make sure Dell Canada came online to Twitter. Dell Canada responded because the team heard our customers. In less than a year, @DellnoBrasil has already generated nearly $800,000 in product revenues. Similarly, @DellHomeSalesCA has surpassed $150,000 and is increasing at notable pace.

Twitter numbers and growth in Dell’s presence in other social networks is one thing, but what does this mean to our customers and for Dell’s social media strategy overall moving forward? In my mind, it boils down to a few key strategies:

* Streamline our presence in social media networks, create meaningful content for customers and continue to increase our connections with them in those places
* Focus on building a tighter integration between Dell.com, Support.Dell.com, our Dell Community sites with our presence in social networks
* Continue our focus on scaling support of social media initiatives into the Dell business units

Executing against all those strategies will take a lot more effort and collaboration between many departments within the company. In my mind, getting those things right will lead to us to a new level into areas I’ve spoken about previously like content syndication and aggregation. We are making strides here that I can discuss more in the future. For now, I can tell you that we’ve got some interesting enhancements coming to IdeaStorm soon, and we continue working to roll out the new version of the Telligent platform that much of Dell’s Community properties reside on called Telligent Community 5.0.

Executing these strategies also means we’ll have to take steps now to eventually help us tackle some big issues on the horizon like profile collaboration. If you need any proof that this is a complex thing, take a look at some of the discussions that resulted when both Yahoo unveiled plans for tighter integration with Facebook Connect and Google on their Friend Connect plans with Twitter.

For Dell (or any company for that matter), isolated social media efforts won’t lead to long-term success in this space. Our long-term success depends on how well we execute on the key strategy points I outlined earlier in this post. My belief in the promise that social media brings combined with Dell’s commitment to our long-term social media strategy is why I continue to do this job.

While funds raised by nonprofits are at an all-time low overall, this year’s eBay Giving Works figures were released amid a year of rapid growth for online fundraising. Online giving is growing at 44 percent per year, seven times faster than offline giving growth¹. Here are some ideas:

1. Forum Participation.

Visit forums regularly and offer advice to people where you can. Stay a regular to that forum so you become known for giving good advice. There are many press release agencies out there, some free (google "free press release"), some not (www.prweb.com) that you can use to promote ATP Members. Make your press release short and to the point. List the benefits of membership and make it interesting and from the point of view or perspective of a reporter. I.e...

"All Things Photography launch new private members website for photographers of all levels...absolute beginner to professional. Blah blah blah..."

5. Word of mouth

You can easily promote us using word of mouth, ads in local papers or wherever. All you need to do is go to a domain hosting company such as GoDaddy and buy a relevant domain such as www.photolearn.com (made that one up).

You can then add a redirect using your own affiliate link so when talking about us you can just say "go to photolearn.com to find out more! When they type that domain into their browser, GoDaddy will redirect them to ATP Members with your affiliate link embedded...simples!

Do remember to keep the domain relevant and photography related though and even explain to the person why you have a different domain name. Honesty is the best policy but this will allow you to promote us offline without people having to remember your full affiliate url!
