First the Panda, Now the Penguin - What's Up With Google?

On May 22, 2013, Matt Cutts announced on his blog that they are rolling out Penguin 2.0 . It has actually been the fourth release since the first Penguin. However, Google have been referring to it as Penguin 2.0 since not just minor refreshes on the existing algorithm were made. They had made some changes on the algorithm itself. This means, the updates would most likely have a stronger impact in the search results.

So, what's up with Google this time? What can webmasters expect in the coming months from Google SEO? On this video, Matt Cutts not only answers this question. He reassures webmasters- who prioritize the benefits of their users, that they should not be affected negatively in any way. On the contrary, the Penguin should bring more good their way because the new algorithms were created to help people find the best sites out there. How? Here are some of the points given:

Discover black hat webspam. One of the main purposes of Penguin 2.0 is to discover webspam, What is webspam? It is a "black hat", meaning illegal SEO tactic which deceives search engine spiders. Webspam can be done in different ways such as by swamping an entire page with a lot of keywords or key phrases.

Another strategy is by deliberately inserting keywords in the content, not withstanding the fact that the article is filled with grammatical errors and that some statements do not make any sense at all. Indeed, armed with a Spinning Software, many webmasters can recreate multiple versions of a single article within minutes, simply by altering words and phrases with possible replacements. The result is a poorly "spun" version of the article, stuffed with meaningless phrases which, would often sound ridiculous to a sane human reader. Obviously, the content was not created for people but intended to make-a-fool out of search engine spiders.

Apparently, the Penguin can tell. In addition, Google encourages more interaction with webmasters. For instance, if you happen to come across a spam site, you can report it at http://bit.ly/penguinspamreport and Google will check on it.

Distinguish advertorials that violate guidelines. Some advertisers pay to have their links included in a post or to get a positive review. Matt said there's nothing wrong with paid posts and that advertorials should not lower a website's page rank as long as it meets the guidelines accordingly. For example, there should be a clear disclosure stating that it was a paid review so that the reader can be made aware of that fact.

Detect hacked sites and sites with malware. Searchers are now alerted about websites that have been possibly hacked or may serve malware. Again, Matt emphasized that they are not after penalizing the webmasters of the hacked sites. They are simply protecting internet users from opening potentially hazardous websites or pages. In fact, Google has provided assistance for webmasters who have been hacked (http://www.google.com/webmasters/hacked/) so they can immediately fix the problem.

Matt did not give exact details about the changes or the algorithms. He made it clear though that for those who are working hard to enhance the quality of their websites by implementing "white hat" or legitimate SEO techniques, there is nothing to worry about. In effect, these updates would benefit even webmasters who do not perform SEO tactics at all, but who are focusing on providing great, quality content for their audience.

Handy Tips for A First-time Traveller

Are you planning to go on a trip any time soon? If so, check out these handy travel tips:

Know the local custom and laws. Conduct research in advance to know the custom, the laws, and the overall conditions in your destination especially if you are visiting a foreign country for the first time.

You can check out Travel.State.Gov, a website managed by the Bureau of Consular Affairs under the US Department of State, to get accurate information about the specific country you will visit. In case of an emergency, the Bureau of Consular Affairs can be reached at 1-888-407-4747.

Take precautionary measures. Write down or print your itinerary and passport information. Leave the document to a family or a trusted friend who stays in your country of origin.

If you live in the US, don’t forget to sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program so the State Department can assist you right away in case of an emergency. You can sign up the form at https://travelregistration.state.gov. All the information you will provide regarding yourself and your planned trip will be held strictly confidential, in accordance with the Privacy Act.

If you have a medical insurance, review the policy to know if emergency expenses incurred overseas are covered in the plan.

Do not bring a large bulk of cash or wear conspicuous jewelry while on your trip. Do not speak and never accept packages from strangers who may approach you.

If you are on medication, be sure to bring along a letter from the attending physician. The letter should clearly state your medical condition and the name including the generic names of the of prescription drugs you are carrying. Be sure to pack your medicine kit in your hand luggage for easy access.

Pack light. Carrying too many luggage is a big hassle so bring only what’s necessary for your trip. Choose clothes that are light, can be worn in layers, and can mixed and matched, especially if you’re going in a cold country or if you plan to stay there for a few weeks.

Bring two or three coats that you can wear on top of casual as well as formal outfits, and two or three pairs of shoes that you can wear with a sporty, casual, and business attire. You can also bring in a few accessories such as scarves and belts to create different looks with the same pieces of clothing.

Bring small, refillable, plastic bottles for your toiletries. You can surely buy more of your personal stuff from a department store or a convenience store at your destination, unless you will be staying in an island or a remote province. Pack in extra underwears in your hand bag just in case something unexpected happens with your luggage.

Create a list and double check when you pack. Jot down all the things that you need to bring on your trip. Gather all the items on your list in one place before putting them one-by-one in your suitcase. As you put an item in your bag, strike through the item from your list so you can be sure that you will not leave behind anything important. Don’t forget to bring with you the list and use it again when it’s time to re-pack and go back home.

Make sure that you can easily recognize your luggage from the rest of the bags at the airport by adding name tags and distinctive stickers.

Learn the local language. If you are going in a country where English is not the primary language, it’s best to learn the basics.

Search for an online translator and check out phrases and terms that you might need to use in an everyday conversation such as the customary greetings, how to ask for directions, the local currency, etc. Print it out and bring the copy with you.

Even if the people you meet understand and speak English, tourists who try to communicate using the local language are much appreciated. Besides, meeting the local people and being able to converse with them in their dialect is part of what makes traveling fun and memorable.

Review the Terms and Conditions of your credit cards. It is much safer to travel with a credit card than to bring a large amount of cash. However, bring only the credit cards that you will need to use while on your trip. Read the fine print so you can be aware of your privileges and limits as a cardholder.

Major credit card issuers usually provide perks and services that are important for travelers such as travel insurance, collision insurance for car rentals, lost luggage insurance, roadside assistance, etc. Using these perks can literally save you hundreds of dollars but you need to be ready to do the paperwork. To be sure, call up your issuer and ask the exact procedures involved in claiming these perks.

Furthermore, credit card transactions from an unfamiliar destination may trigger a fraud alert and the issuer may block the account to protect the cardholder so you should inform your bank about your planned trip. And while you’re on the phone, ask for the customer service hotline that you can call from your place of destination just in case you might need assistance. Compare hotels at your destination. Check out a hotel comparison website like Hotelscombined.com to find the best hotel sites in your destination. Thus, you can easily compare the ratings, reviews and prices of different hotels from one website.

One of the most important advantages that regular employees enjoy is entitlement to benefits such as Social Security and health care. A certain percentage of the monthly pay is automatically deducted as contribution for these services, including taxes. Energy-Saving Tips for Washing Machines and How to Save Money on Laundry

I am determined to do every possible way to cut down our electricity bill. Last time, I posted energy-saving tips for refrigerators. Today, I looked up for practical ways to reduce a washing machine's energy consumption and how to save money on laundry.

1. Wash with cold water. According to EnergySavers.gov, 90% of the energy used by a conventional top-load washing machine is for heating the water.

2. Wash in full load. The washer uses the same of energy when washing a half load or a full load so you save more time energy if you choose the latter.

3. Remove lint. Regularly clean the dryer and washer to remove lint. Lint gets in the way of the airflow and causes the dryer to work harder and consume more energy. (Check out Cloth Diaper Nation for ideas on how to recycle lint)

4. Shorten the wash cycle. If clothes are not that dirty, you can reduce the "wash" minutes.

5. Measure the detergent you use. Use a cup to make sure that you don’t put in too much than what is needed for the load.

6. Shorten spin drying. For light clothes, a short spin in the dryer should be enough to remove excess water so they can be hung to dry.

7. Hang to dry. On sunny days, skip the dryer and hang clothes in a clothes line or a drying rack to reduce energy consumption.

8. Know when it’s time to wash. Some clothing pieces such as jackets and sweaters can be worn a couple of times before they need washing. Don’t toss it in the hamper right away. Instead, hang it neatly on a hanger or a clothing rack. (Read "The When-to-Wash-It Handbook" by Real Simple)

9. Check the ENERGY STAR label. If you live in the US and you plan to buy a washing machine, make sure it has the ENERGY STAR label. Use the EnergyGuide to compare which machine will enable you to conserve energy.

10. Choose a front-loading washer. Front-loading washing machines are more energy efficient than top-loading machines. Investing on this type of washer will enable to cut down your electricity bill and save money over the long term.

Should You Charge it To Your Credit?

For many people, using a credit card is inevitable, especially for consumers who live in the United States, where credit history and credit score are essential factors that can affect most financial aspects of living such as when applying for a credit card, a car loan, or mortgage; renting an apartment; or when applying for a job.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 159 million credit cardholders in the United States in 2000, 173 million in 2006, and that number is projected to increase to 181 million by 2010.

However, while a credit card offers the cardholder a quick and convenient access to the things and services they need, it’s important to recognize the potential dangers that uncontrolled use or mismanagement of this plastic presents.

For instance, charging the wrong kinds of expenses to a credit card can easily lead to serious debt problems. Are you tempted to grab that hot vacation package offer online and charge it to your credit? Some people may be brave enough to do things without a plan because they can finance it with a credit card but if you will ask the opinion of credit experts, they will most likely say that it’s a bad idea.

If you want to go on an escapade, the best thing to do is make plans ahead and save up for it. Sure enough, booking a flight online or making a hotel reservation online requires a credit card, but you need to make sure that you already have the cash to pay off that balance in full before the due date.

Travel expenses (airline tickets, hotel accommodation, car rental fees, food, pocket money, shopping allowance) can prove to be very costly. Blindly charging these expenses to your credit card before and while on a trip is a dreadful habit. After enjoying your getaway, a huge load of credit card debt awaits you.

Aside from travel expenses, there are other costs that should never be paid with a credit card unless you are certain that you can pay off the full balance on time. Interest rate charges can be so high on some credit cards that it can take you a very long time to zero in your balance if you will only pay the minimum due each month.

The Consolidated Credit, a company that offers credit counseling services, reports that in 2011, the average credit card debt per household is $6600. It is an undeniable fact that credit card debt is a primary cause of financial hardship for many consumers in the US.

While owning a credit card brings certain advantages, a cardholder needs to have a precise and reasonable answer to the question, “Should I charge it to my credit?” And if there seems to be no clear answer in sight, then that should be an obvious indication that maybe you should not charge it to your credit after all.

Energy Saving Tips for Refrigerators and Freezers

According to Energy Savers, appliances account for about 17% of household energy consumption. Add to that, a refrigerator uses almost five times electricity that the average television consumes. We don't watch really watch TV but we do have a refrigerator.

We live in a city where the temperature can go down to as low as 10 degree Celsius.

What we do is unplug our refrigerator every night and usually the cold is enough to keep the food frozen until the next morning. We wait when the motor goes off on its own before unplugging it from the power source.

I looked up more information on how we can minimize the energy consumption of this particular appliance so we can cut down our electricity bill. Here's what I found:

If your refrigerator is too old, it will use up more energy. (Is it time for you to replace your old refrigerator or freezer? Check out this Refrigerator Retirement Savings Calculator to know the answer.) Below are tips to help reduce your fridge or freezer’s energy consumption:

Position the refrigerator away from direct sunlight. Don’t place it near other appliances that produce heat such as heater, dishwasher, and oven.

Leave enough room in between food packages especially on the sides, back, and top of your fridge to allow good air circulation.

Allow food to cool down first before placing it inside the fridge.

Keep the door closed to prevent cold air from getting out.

Don’t forget to defrost the freezer when the ice builds up.

Clean the condenser coils regularly.

Make sure that the door seals are airtight. To test, insert a piece of paper between the seals and close the door. If you can pull the paper out easily, that means air is leaking. You can try to put petroleum jelly on the seals but if that doesn’t work, you may need to replace the seals.

If you are going away for a few days or a few weeks, empty and clean the refrigerator, turn it off, unplug it from the power source and leave the door open.

If you live in the US and plan to buy a new refrigerator, make sure it has the ENERGY STAR label. The US federal government requires most appliances to display the bright yellow and black EnergyGuide label so consumers can be aware of the annual energy consumption and operating cost for each appliance when doing comparison shopping.

Three Useful Resources to Learn SEO from Scratch

When a workmate mentioned “SEO” to me, I Googled the term and found out that the acronym stands for Search Engine Optimization. I have not the least idea about what SEO means.

Although I’m no SEO expert, I’ve come to learn that it is an important factor for a blogger, webmaster, or internet marketer’s success. If you’re new to blogging or internet marketing, learning SEO as early as now will give you an advantage in improving your traffic, page rank and overall online presence.

I came across so many websites on the internet that tackle this particular subject but not all of them would be worth your time. On this post, I’m sharing three useful resources I read (and still do) to gain a better insight about Search Engine Optimization. Hopefully, you will find these resources as helpful as I did.

SEOMOZ offers a comprehensive guide for beginners starting from How Search Engines Operate, How People Interact with Search Engines, Why Search Engine Marketing is Necessary; down to the Fundamentals of SEO and How to Measure and Keep Track of Your Success. I love the fact that the concepts were explained in a straightforward manner- minus complicated terminologies; alongside simple illustrations that make the ideas easier to grasp.

Traffic Generation Cafe is a favorite source on my list. Anna Hoffman answers some of the biggest questions about SEO that’s been on my mind. She writes in an engaging style so you feel comfortable reading the whole post.

The Google's SEO Starter Guide provides easy-to-follow optimization techniques especially for beginners. Basic steps like using target keywords in titles and headers, anchor texts, and tags; improving site navigation; creating fresh content; and using free Google Webmaster Tools are discussed in this PDF version.

Sixteen Success Tips for the Online Freelancer

A lot of people welcome the idea of being a freelance contractor so they can work from home, do a job they love, or to earn more. Would you like to be an online freelancer? If yes, here are sixteen success tips for you:

1. Share your expertise.
What kind of service can you offer? There are so many different jobs that you can do from a remote location which is why online freelancing can be a lucrative career. Choose a job that you enjoy and that you are good at. Remember that you have to contend with other freelancers so it’s very important to excel in your field.

2. Know your rights. As a freelancer, you should be aware of your rights and limits particularly when it comes to matters of payment, copyright ownership and other legalities. Before signing up for a project, make sure that you have read each and every statement in the contract and that you agree with the implications. For your protection, you may choose to provide an Agreement and have it signed by your client.

Never accept a deal unless you are clear about the terms and conditions. What does your client expect once the project is completed? How much is the compensation? When and how will payment be sent? Are you completely granting copyright of your work to your client? (Here’s an article which discusses the copyright issue in detail.) To avoid unpleasant surprises, everything should be explicitly stipulated in the contract.

3. Communicate with your client. Make sure that you understand exactly what the customer wants. It’s very important to see from your customer’s perspective to deliver a better job. The only way you can do this is to communicate effectively. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Some clients will only give general instructions without specifying details.

Encourage your clients to speak out by asking relevant questions. You can also prepare a form to be filled out so you can get all the information you need before attempting to begin with the project. After submission, don't forget to ask for feedback so you'll know how well you did with your assignment.

4. Use social media to your advantage. Social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc. can be wonderful platforms to showcase your work and promote your services. Social sites can give you the exposure you need in the WWW so you can discover new job opportunities and potential employers can find you more easily as well.

5. Expand your professional network. Use social media sites to build your list of professional contacts. Join a group or a forum related to your niche. Establish ties with other freelancers. This is a great way to get support and grow as a freelancer.

6. Watch out for scams! Not all job opportunities online are legitimate so you need to be careful about accepting projects. You might come across inviting offers from clients who do not pay on time or do not pay at all. Others pretend to be hiring when all they’re really want is to steal your personal information.

Never give out your banking details, Social Security Number or other personal information even when a client insists that it is necessary for sending payment or for tax purposes. You can arrange to have the payment sent via XOOM or other wire money transfer services. You may also choose to receive payment via PayPal or Google Checkout as these are not linked to your personal bank account.

7. Protect your sample work. A scammer may require you to send work samples such as articles or art work through e-mail, with the intent of stealing your ideas or using the samples without your consent. Protect yourself by sending a link to your online portfolio where samples of your work can be viewed.

8. Live up to your promises. Make sure that with each project you do, you give it your 100% service. When you give a deadline for a project completion, see to it that you can submit on time. Give yourself a reasonable time frame to get the job done.

Do not accept multiple projects at once to make sure that the quality of your work is not compromised. If you want to build up an outstanding reputation in the freelancing industry, you must ensure that each client will be happy with your output.

9. Make your work space inspiring. If you do not have an extra room to create an office, you can designate an area in your home as your work space. Create a working space that is comfortable, functional and inspiring. See to it that you have enough storage to help you get organized and keep clutter out of sight.

Paint the wall with your favorite hue. Add beautiful, decorative pieces or art work that are a delight to the eyes. Place a mood board to stimulate creativity. Post motivational quotes on the wall to encourage positivity.

10. Save money from tax deductions. If you are a freelancer in the US, you are entitled to write off certain expenses from your taxes. (Examples are coffee and lunch during business meetings, business cell phone bills, home office expenses, etc.)

11. Manage your time. Freelancers have the freedom to work at their own pace and preferred time. However, just because you are the boss does not mean you should not follow a schedule.

I confess that this is one of my biggest challenges as a freelance writer. It can be tempting to put aside work for other things but such a habit spells trouble for a freelancer. It could result to poor quality of work because you’re rushing to beat the deadline; missing a deadline; or losing clients in the long run.

12. Present yourself as a specialist. As you gain experience and build-up a solid portfolio, you should become more confident in your abilities. For instance, experienced writers can afford to demand a higher compensation because they are confident about what they can do. If you present yourself as an expert, prospective customers would be more inclined to entrust you with an assignment and pay you with the compensation you deserve.

13. Build your own website or start a blog. Whether you are a freelance web designer, writer, web developer, a virtual assistant, having your own website is recommended if you want to offer freelance services. You can freely showcase your talent from your website or blog and you can even monetize it for extra income. Having your own site/blog would make you look more professional especially when an interested client tries to look up your name in the search engines.

14. Take charge of your finances. As a freelance contractor, you are in charge of your finances- from issuing invoices, marketing your services, monitoring payments, paying bills, preparing taxes, building up your savings, etc. Monitor your cash flow more effectively by using a simple small business accounting software.

15. Strive for excellence. No matter what it is you do or how long you’ve been freelancing, continue to work towards improvement. Keep yourself updated about the latest developments in your field. Discover tools that you can use to simplify your work and improve your output. Attend seminars, webinars or conferences to enhance your skills and strengthen your credentials.

16. Promote yourself. Get yourself out in the market field by joining freelance websites like Freelancer.com, Elance, and oDesk.

Many small business owners who want to outsource tasks use these sites to find qualified candidates so if you are just starting out a career in freelancing, you can build up your portfolio by bidding on projects.

In a previous post, I wrote about the three reasons why I blog and mentioned that it's one way to earn extra money.

Today, I'm going to share with you four websites that pay you to blog. I personally signed up with these sites and have been a member since I launched The Shopbug, in 2007.

How much you earn from paid blogging will depend on the quality of your blog. Most advertisers are looking for blogs that are constantly updated and with at least 60% of unpaid content.

Sponsored Reviews

Advertisers from SR offer generous payout per post which can range from as low as $5 to as much as $300 or more. Bloggers earn 50% of the payout. Payment is sent via PayPal within 14 days once the completed review has been submitted. Higher prices are reserved for top blogs with a higher page rank. PR is based on the link's popularity on Yahoo Search and Alexa.

To be approved, your blog must be at least three months old and must be indexed in major search engines like Yahoo & Google. Once approved, you can start bidding at opportunities and wait for the advertiser's response. When an advertiser accepts your bid, you must complete the review and submit the URL of the post within seven days. Be sure to read the rules and policies before signing up to avoid rejection.

Blogsvertise

If your blog has been live for 60 days, you can sign up with Blogsvertise. Unlike other paid-to-blog sites, you don't need to bid to receive tasks as they are distributed based on the blog's eligibility. However, you can grab 1 task per day from your dashboard whenever there is an available opportunity.

Average payout is $10 per post. Each blog entry must be at least 100 words with 2 to 3 links of the advertiser's request. Payment is sent via PayPal 30 days after the completed post has been submitted and approved. Unfortunately, Wordpress blogs are not accepted.

Why I Started Blogging and Why You Should Too!

If you are passionate about something, then you should definitely start blogging! Personally, I blog for three reasons:

1. I enjoy it.

2. It strengthens my writing.

3. It’s a good way to earn extra money. (Mind you, some people really make a living out of blogging!)

Should you start your own blog too?

Why not? You can use your blog to inspire people, share your happiness, talk about your dreams, wear your heart on your sleeves, expose truths, share tips and ideas, promote your business, etc.

You can be imaginative, be strong, be vulnerable- your blog is yours and no one can tell you what to do with it. Even if you’re not into writing, blogs are great platforms to share the world your passion.

Search the net and you’ll discover that blogs are not just limited to written text. Photo blogs, Sketch blogs, Video blogs or Vlogs, Audio blogs are also popular. Blogs that contain mixed media types and short written posts are called Tumblelogs.

Typecast is another form of blog where typewritten posts are scanned to be published online. Phlogs are blogs that use the Gopher Protocol server, the oldest protocol used in blogging.

Do you plan to launch an online business? Are you a home business entrepreneur? If so, blogging is a good way to start learning the ins and outs of internet marketing. I think it is an effective platform to promote products and services and to build better customer relationships.

Blogging is free and easy.

If you have not the least idea of how to blog, have no fear. Try Blogger or Wordpress to create a blog like this within 15 minutes or less. I used Blogger for my very first blog but I think Wordpress is just as user-friendly. All you have to do is register an account and pick from the available templates.

Maintaining a blog is not complicated. Posting entries and updating contents should not take more than half an hour. Once, you're used to it, you can publish a post in five minutes.

However, conceptualizing and creating a quality post can take some time. (But that’s a different point and will be discussed in another article)

Some of my posts take me 3 to 4 hours to finish - gathering information, writing, proofreading, searching and uploading photos that complement the text, creating links, and polishing.

I enjoy the whole process of blogging, and once I'm done publishing a post, I can tell if I'm happy about it. It's even better when you receive comments from your readers. It's a great feeling to know that you created something that has moved someone to share it with others or when a reader takes the time out to say something about what you've written.

What I Learned from Three Years of Blogging

After three years of blogging, I have learned some things that I would like to share today. Not that these things are new. I’m sure that there are lots of other bloggers out there who already know these things. I guess I’m writing these down not only in behalf of newbies (welcome to the blogging world) but also for my own.

After all, isn’t it what blogging is originally about? Journaling thoughts that you would like to remember so that after a while as you read it again, then you would be reminded, “oh yes, I’ve written this”. So here’s what I’ve learned so far, which hopefully will help me as I begin this new blog.

Blogging is wearing your heart or a piece of your heart on your sleeves. Because the posts are there for everyone to see, they reveal something about you – your likes, dislikes; your passion; your dreams, ideas, experiences – visitors and especially followers of your blog are bound to discover something about you, unless you are blogging for a phony reason (example, for SEO purposes?).

No matter what kind of blog you own: be it an opinionated blog or a photo blog; or what category your blog belongs to: fashion, interior design, home living, garden, pets, technology, business, photography, weddings, etc.; you are revealing something about you to your audience.

When I created my first blog, I didn’t really know what I wanted to blog about. I didn’t know much about blogging except for the fact that I can earn a few extra bucks online. A former workmate introduced me to blogging but I think I would’ve eventually found my way to it sooner or later because of the nature of my work, which is online writing but that’s another story.

Anyways, I can honestly say that although I am delighted to get offers from advertisers who want to sponsor my blog, it’s not just about that. I want my blog to be something I can be proud of. If someone asks, I want to be able to say that “I’m the owner of that blog and I am responsible for its content”.

You can blog about anything but not everyone would read you. If you want to increase your blog readership or to build-up a following, it’s important to offer something of value to your audience. What would a visitor learn from your post today?

It doesn’t really have to be something that has never been heard of or nobody knows yet, but it has to be something valuable.

Would it make someone smile? Would it make someone think? Would it spark an idea?

If your blog post can at least remind someone of something good, informative, useful, practical, or inspiring, then you can be sure that your followers will increase.

This proves to be true even if your blog does not contain much text. I myself have been inspired by so many amazing photo blogs on the web.

Photos can make a huge difference. Photos are much like the icing on a cake or the garnishing on a plate of a delicious meal. True, your content can be very good, informative and inspiring, but with the right images, your content will be a lot more appetizing, so to speak. Aside from beautifying the page, you can use photos to emphasize a point or to illustrate ideas.

One important thing to remember about using photos for your blog is to respect other people’s copyright ownership.

You may find the perfect photo to go with your post but if it’s not yours, you must always give proper credit to its owner. Be sure to direct your readers to the original source by linking it to the appropriate page. Better yet, ask permission to use the photo to make sure that there won’t be any problems later. Of course, this applies not only to images but even to texts, videos, and ideas.

Observe the proper rites. I can’t help but remember this dialogue from the Little Prince and the Fox.

“It would have been better to come back at the same hour,” said the fox. “If, for example, you come at four o’clock in the afternoon, then at three o’clock I shall begin to be happy. I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances. At four o’clock, I shall already be worrying and jumping about. I shall show you how happy I am! But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you . . . One must observe the proper rites . . .”“What is a rite?” asked the little prince. “Those also are actions too often neglected,” said the fox. “They are what make one day different from other days, one hour from other hours.”

Posting regularly is expected of every blogger, that is if you don’t want to lose your audience. If you can update your blog every day, then great for you but if you can’t really live up to daily posting, you must decide how many times per week you can post and what specific days you will be posting. You should inform your audience about your blogging schedule so that they’ll know what to expect in case they want to come back.

Personally, I am guilty of not posting regularly. As much as I want to post daily, there are more important things that need to get done in the real world that makes it difficult sometimes. Now that I’m starting a new blog, I’m thinking, would it be so bad if I commit myself to post at least once each week regularly so that people would know when to come back just in case they want to?

The most successful blogs post daily but if you can’t do that, I don’t think it would be so bad to post once a week as long as your weekly post is of quality. I mean, there are a zillion blogs on the web as of this moment and I don’t think my readers would mind not having to check my blog daily. This way, they can have other days enjoying other blogs too and me on my part, can have more time to prepare a post worth the read. What do you think?

Basic HTML Tags Every Blogger Should Know

If you want to create your own website or blog, learning basic HTML is an advantage. Why you should learn HTML? Which basic HTML tags do you need to know? And how can you use these to enhance your writing online?

Why Learn HTML

HTML or HyperText Markup Language is the primary code used in creating and designing web pages. It was Tim Berners-Lee- a physicist, who first came up with the concept of HTML in the early 1990s. Read here for the complete history of HTML.

If you’re writing for the web, why should you be interested in learning even just the basics of this language? Even if you’re not going to write an entire code to create your personal website, knowing the simplest HTML tags can help you in many ways. Using HTML tags is useful when:

• You want to point your reader to a specific webpage • You want to quote an online reference or resource (to avoid plagiarism) • You want to add structure to your writing (creating bulleted lists, headlines, subtitles) • Using images with your writing

Most Important HTML Tags for Writers

To make an anchor text link, below is the HTML tag you must use: Make sure that the URL of the website is correct and complete. A valid URL must always begin with http:// or https:// (for secured sites). You can use any word or phrase after the > Don’t forget the closing tag

For example:
Let’s say that I want to point my reader to a webpage that gives tips on editing or proofreading. The URL for that page is http://simplysubtle.wordpress.com/2011/06/17/practical-tips-editing-your-own-writing/. Now, the text or phrase I want to make clickable is how to edit your own writing. Thus, my HTML code will appear like this:

Add structure to your writing presentation using the following tags:

To make your writing bold ; or ;
To italicize a word/words ;
To underline 
To break a line

To make a new paragraph

To make a bulleted list: To make a numbered list: To choose the alignment of your writing: < align="the alignment you want (justify,right,left)">

If you want a justified alignment, insert the word justify in between the quotation marks ( " " ).

To add an image or picture: The image source can be the file name or the URL where the image is located. The alternative text is the text that will appear in case the photo doesn’t download properly . The width and height are the attributes in pixels which determine the size of the picture.

Other attributes which can be added within the tag are align (the alignment of the pic); border; hspace and vspace (the horizontal and vertical space from of the text from the pic); etc. Wordpress and Blogger both have built-in editors so you can easily fix photo settings but just in case you need to do it manually, it helps to know the tags.

Here is a site I found that provides a more detailed definition of the HTML <> tag. Samples are also available so you can get to try embedding HTML images on your own.

Use HTML Tags to Enhance Your Writing

You can use HTML tags when:

submitting articles to article directories (most article directories accept basic HTML tags for easier reading)

posting blog entries (make sure that you place the tags in the HTML editor of your composer)

leaving comments in blogs or websites (You can make a text clickable if you want to direct the blog/website owner to your site. However, exercise discretion when doing so.)

optimizing your website to improve search engine ranking (SEO)

Another significant tag is target=" _blank". This tag is combined with the a href tag if you want the page to open in a different window.

Last but not least, the rel="nofollow" tag is very important if you want to point a reader to another website but don't want to hurt your own website's ranking. Too many outbound links (links pointing to another website) can do that. To understand more how the nofollow tag affects website ranking, you can read this or this.

When Should I Use Capitalization?

Proper capitalization is important. Never overlook these basic rules of capitalization:

Capitalize:

The first word of a sentence
The pronoun “I” and all its contractions (I’m, I’ll, I’ve,I’d)
All proper nouns
The first word of a quote (“Please, give me advice.”)
A title or rank preceding a person’s name (Dr. Glenn Faust, Engr. Bradford)
A person’s title inside a quotation or dialogue. (“Have a great trip, Sir!”)
Compass points when referring to a specific region. (“My friend lives in the South.”)
All words included in titles of books, songs, movies, and other art works
Names of clubs and organizations
Historical events
Names of languages

Do not capitalize:

Names of seasons (winter, spring .summer, fall)
Directions when not referring to a specific region (The sun sets in the west.)
Names of elements (carbon, oxygen, helium, etc.)

Writer: Use Adverbs With Caution!

I am dead to adverbs; they cannot excite me. To misplace an adverb is a thing which I am able to do with frozen indifference; it can never give me a pang. ... --and this adverb plague is one of them. ... Yes, there are things which we cannot learn, and there is no use in fretting about it. I cannot learn adverbs; and what is more I won't. - Mark Twain, "Reply to a Boston Girl," Atlantic Monthly, June 1880

How many times have you heard the advice, use adverbs with caution? Many writers are prone to the excessive use of adverbs (especially adverbs ending in –Y and –LY) to highlight subjects or emphasize a point. But did you know that careless use of adverbs can hurt your writing?

What Are Adverbs?

Adverb -- “: a word belonging to one of the major form classes in any of numerous languages, typically serving as a modifier of a verb, an adjective, another adverb, a preposition, a phrase, a clause, or a sentence, expressing some relation of manner or quality, place, time, degree, number, cause, opposition, affirmation, or denial, and in English also serving to connect and to express comment on clause content”(---The Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online)

There are 5 types of adverbs (manner, time, frequency, place, purpose). Adverbs are used to compare, to give more detail or description. Below are some examples (Take note that not all adverbs end in –LY).

The italicized words are adverbs:

eat slowly
lookedlovingly
write speedily
quickly left
really angry
carefully checked
run faster
almost cried
very beautiful

Show, Don't Tell

The first book about writing I read was So You Want to Write a Novel by Lou Willett Stanek. In this book, she encourages writers to Show, Don’t Tell. Following this rule will help you avoid ineffective use of adverbs.

Compare the following sentences:

Jenny angrily left the room.
Jenny’s face flushed and her fists tightened as she slammed the door behind her.

The first sentence uses the adverb "angrily" to define how Jenny felt when she left the room.

The second sentence shows the reader how Jenny looked and how she acted. Upon reading the 2nd sentence, the reader understands that “Jenny was angry”.

Yes, imagination and practice are essential to express ideas without using adverbs. But the result can be rich, original and powerful writing.

Adverbs and Redundancy

Incorrect use of adverbs can lead to redundancy – another element of poor writing. Consider this:

If you really want to write well, it is extremely important to pay close attention to the words you actually use.
If you want to write well, it is important to focus on the words you use.

Notice that the second sentence gets the message across even without additional words or adverbs.

Sometimes, I am guilty of using too many adverbs on my writing. After researching on this issue, it’s clear to see why adverbs should be used with caution. And that's what I'm going to do.

Active Voice vs Passive Voice – Who Wins the Battle?

Professional writers recommend the active style of writing unless you have a very good reason for using the passive voice. Which should you use?

Advantages of the Active Voice:

It is straight to the point.

It is easier to read and understand.

It sounds more natural.

It eliminates unnecessary words.

It strengthens your writing.

Compare these sentences:

PASSIVE: The letter was delivered by my best-friend. ACTIVE: My best friend delivered the letter. PASSIVE: We were asked to write a 4-versed poem by our English professor. ACTIVE: Our English professor asked us to write a 4-versed poem.

Check Your Writing:

When editing your work, pay attention to each sentence. Underline the sentences written in the passive voice and rewrite them.

Which one is better – the active or the passive voice?
Which is clearer?
Which of the two sentences has made more impact?

Does this mean you should never use the passive voice?

Writers must learn to use the passive voice sparingly and with intent. There are instances when using the passive voice is more appropriate.

For example, using the passive voice is ideal if you do not want to assign an object or an action to a particular subject. Hence, the passive style is often used in business letters and business reports.

Examples:

The files have been sent. Unauthorized charges have been discovered. The meeting has been adjourned.

In the above examples, there is no need to declare who sent the files, who discovered the unauthorized charges, or who dismissed the meeting. Thus, using the passive voice is not only convenient, but applicable as well.
