My kind of night out is listening to good music :) So I had to be there when Indie Fridays was officially launched last February 24 at Ponti.

The Walkie Talkies! So good. They sang several medleys and an original composition. I hope they make it big in the OPM industry soon!

Blast from the past :) Pa-cooooool. Hahahaha.

I literally brought a gang (a van load, I kid you not). It was just supposed to be my brother (and his camera!), but we ended up being joined by his entire barkada. And I'm a cool Ate like that. Just kidding :)

I like how my brothers' photos turned out (he used a really neat flash). I also liked how my hair turned out (It's only my second time to try curling my hair by myself. Ever). Someone in Kuala Lumpur really liked it too (hehe). I think I'm a curly haired girl trapped in a straight haired girl's body!

But most of all, I liked how the night was filled with promise and good praises for the acts who performed - The Romcoms, Reese and Vica (and Dae), The Slinks, and The Walkie Talkies. Hopefully the turnout gets stronger over time!

Melai! Grabe ang dami mo nang hosting gigs. Naks. :) I kept SMSing her to ask how the event was going. We arrived 10:30 - I thought we were gonna be horribly late but we were actually just in time.

Eto na - the Bro Posse. I.e. my brother's friends. A group of dudes in an event organized by fasheeen blogerrz. Who knew? Those are obligatory "stud" faces for the camera but I was actually surprised to see later on that these guys enjoyed the music. They're the very mushy, comfortable-with-their-identities sort of kids.

New face = Bianca. She and Heidi are also my brother's pals. Obligatory shot with Raleene and Camille Co!

Logistical outfit post fail but this will have to do. The only different thing are the shorts (pambahays, I kid you not because I spotted them being sold beside a xerox machine in UP mwahahahaha), and the wedges from Primadonna - I've been wearing these straight for two days (including a client presentation the day before) - and no peep of blister or pain. When I pass them by on my little shoe rack, I pause for five seconds and stare at them, fondly, gratefully. :)

We went home pretty late - I was with boys, so you could imagine that after 2 hours of nothing but a shaker and a pitcher to share they'd all be pretty famished so we had some chow at Eastwood. In Full Bloom

It was an interesting discovery last Monday to find out that director Louie Ignacio paints (although industry insiders probably already knew this forever). Just like a true auteur, he is keen on transferring his visions to mediums that he can control with flair: may it be a show, a concert, or a canvas. His studies of flora are pretty, in a very quiet kind of way - it's telling of this man's side that may not often be seen on the live productions that he helms. Although they are labelled as abstractions, I admire the consistency of the technique and the volume (i.e. light hand strokes, or is it a special blotting technique?) throughout the pieces on display.

I feel vicariously satisfied when I meet people who are actively pursuing multiple interests. I don't know if it was the same with you, but when I was a little girl adding my scrawls to my Tita's MOD pages, I was told to focus on being one thing when we grow up. The mantra sticks: when I grow up, I'm gonna be a (insert professional title here). And that's what you gun for in all your decisions and undertakings. It used to be that society banked on titles and tangible career accomplishments to measure success or satisfaction.

Among my peers, or at least the people who are trying to eke out a living just like me, what I find is that a lot of us are preoccupied with trying to be NOT just one thing. This is the generation of hyphenates. This is the generation whom Anna Dello Russo instructs to "invent your job." It could be different reasons: one job just doesn't pay the bills. Your "regular" gig isn't your dream job, you need to have a passion project to keep your sanity. You're still not sure of what you really want to end up doing (a common outcry), so you're still exploring around. Or like me, you want to keep learning and you want to do it in as many different avenues as possible. There is something almost Renaissance Man-like in being a "slasher" (i.e. Student-Blogger-Stylist whathaveyou), in pushing yourself as far and as big as you can go.

If I can describe my current state as a movement, I'd say that I'm floating - neither moving forward, backward, nor left or right - but not really static either. I'm submerged, swimming, soaking, taking everything in. It's like being in the womb, surrounded by nourishment and not yet quite alive. I feel like I am something that's gonna be born again, soon.

To further explain the title: yeah, it was a meeting schmeeting day too

And just in case you need to see what I wore: estudyante gear and a cape. It was raining so I added tights. All in all, dry and cozy. :)

It looks covered up but I assure you that this get-up is so easy-breezy and cool (check out how I swish the skirt while pretanding to have a migraine to demonstrate). What I wore last Friday to an old officemate's despedida dinner. One of our lakwatchas in Malaysia involved going to an orchidarium and I think that must've been still on my mind when I put on these things. That or I just wanted to approximate the feeling of pajamas.

The beginning of many train rides of this day

I'm sharing some of my favorite architecture snaps and some obligatory "landmark" poses. I do have one photo each with the more popular ones like the Universal Studies globe, the merlion, et al... but they're mostly shots where I either look like I'm photo-bombing a bunch of other tourists or it all seems identical, and then there's the insecurity of knowing you don't care anymore because you've had a picture taken there yourself / you've seen it somewhere else, so anyway I'm ending this really unnecessarily lengthy caption.

Not a good day to be agliophobic I guess.

Art on underpass tunnels - impressed. Changi airport - even more impressed (unfortunately in the pictures I'm pretending / actually crying so I'll spare you from that)

This was my last day before I flew back to Manila, arrived at 2am, unpacked, took a nap, then went to class five hours later. I wrote at more length about this trip on the Tumblr.

At this point I'm pretty alarmed with the amount of time I've been devoting to creating posts these past four days... meaning I sort of have to drag myself away from this again. Hope you did enjoy everything, though!

Summer's a good couple of months away but sun and the beach are already on my mind... must be because I'm trying to plan out my budget until April as I'm making this post (I'm not trying to sound efficient... I just desperately want to be so and sometimes saying it out loud like that helps kick the will and mentality in). Looking through Spring/Summer look books are always a good inspiration / distraction... so here are some ideas, via my early picks - we all already have these things (sandals, cutoffs, a big bag, and so on), but brands always somehow find a way to update them and make them covetable, season after season. Salmon-pink rope sandals and printed cutoffs? Yes, please. Here's to really sticking to my saving (and shopping) goals this year!

On our third day we spent an easy Sunday morning at Perdana's Lake Gardens. Sprawling acres of nothing but trees, birds, ponds, and flowers all around. We were right at home.

I think Ranie wanted to take me to about three more places, but because I'm such a loser I begged for something nearer and more laid-back, so we just roamed around this beautiful big garden. We arrived there early (9am - that's early!) so we had the whole place to ourselves (almost) for a while... still made me happy. We also saw the planetarium and the national museum. Then in the afternoon I got this serious migraine (period pains suck), so we just stayed at home - but not before I shopped for (more) pasalubong at Petaling Jaya (I think).

Then in the evening we took the bus to SG! The TBS station is really big and nice. All I kept saying to Ranie was "if we had bus stations like these back home, more people would want to travel locally." IDK I'm suddenly thinking of abandoning all my maarte plans and running for legislator - wait I think Ranie wanted to do that. Um.

We ate at the KFC there (tipid mode, exchanged all our monies for SG dollars already). 1) Our KFC chicken is better 2) But the potato wedges were awesome (I write down these things and I get pangs of hunger. Pft).

Waiting for the midnight bus! Timer-set camera on top of my luggage! Hehe.

So I posted this on facebook and everyone was like "uy matching outfits!" I didn't even realize! But hey, I was the one who brought pre-packed clothes. What is happening with my "to build rapport" (inside joke) tshirt-wearing boyfriend? I come here and he suddenly has colored pants in his wardrobe. Haha.

Some of the little treasures I took home from last week: A malaysian fashion magazine, a little mask, a flute, and a little drum from Melaka (for my trinket-loving brothers), a bracelet and elephant door charm from Ranie, and lovely shoes from Rubi | Cotton On in the mall beside the Esplanade. Not here: the shirts I got for my mom and sister. OK, the black bikini is from Cocomo, an online brand. Bought it last year for this trip but we ended up not going to Penang (not enough time) - so I guess, with these little things, I'm excited for summer.

Christmas season ended a few weeks ago but I guess it's never too late to get presents... thank you Accessorize Philippines!

Postcards from Malaysia: Day 2

Started the day bright and early with a bus ride going to Melaka/Malacca. Cloud trance all throughout.

Arrived around Lunchtime. Gong Xi Fa Cai decors dominated the streets, of course!

We had lunch at the oldest building on the Sino-Chinese wing of the Heritage area.

My meal: sticky rice balls and hainanese-style chicken. With a bowl of creamy cendol (it's like Halo-halo) for dessert. Ranie had eel, souped up. Pretty good. Super, even. I'm starting at these rice balls now and wondering where I can find these here in Manila...

Then we crossed over to the bridge and reached the 24 or so museums featuring dioramas and artifacts of Melaka's Portuguese heritage. We only got to explore about three of them because by 5pm, my legs were giving out on me.

Don't tell my mom and officemates, but we found yummy donuts with witty names in one of the malls (John Lemon, anyone?). I find them like a K9 dog sniffs out bombs ^_^

Melaka, in Ranie's words, is like the Vigan of our country - a city of streets and facades that remain as testaments of Malaysia's colonial and trading history. If it weren't so far from KL, I would've loved to stay longer. Here was also where I found my favorite buys, such as little wooden trinkets for my bedroom wall and tiny instruments for my brothers.

Travelling alone, like a big girl.

What greeted me at the arrival area. Best in simple but benta gestures. :)

Our very first stop: Batu Caves, relatively near where Ranie stays now.

Pausing for breath in the middle of climbing what I'm sure is more than a hundred-feet set of stairs.

When you look up and see this, you'd feel like thanking a Creator too - whatever your faith.

Took the train to KLCC to meet up with a fellow vacationing couple: Cameron and our college batchmate Rachel.

Obligatory shot with the Petronas Towers. Pretty amazing to have to stretch your neck so far back to take in their glory. Also saw them lit up at night the following day.

The Sultan Abdul Samad building with a backdrop of decidedly more modern commercial towers.

We went to the Central Market where all the accessories, batik, and carved oddities one could ever want are found. But there were hip, art-inspired stores too.

Evening coffee and dessert while perusing Malay fashion magazines at a coffeehouse. And coming up with some "art."

So that was my day 1 in a few snaps. My general first impression of KL is that the modern and the traditional just seems to mix naturally (oriental identity crisis similar to our country's predicament). And the train system is so convenient. And most of the people we met are polite and friendly. It was a sun-filled four days of walking around and taking in as much sights (and pasalubong-buying on my end) as possible. It actually felt just like a relaxed weekend back home - of course that's probably mostly because of who I was with.

A closer look at one of the sets we shot months ago in Batangas, for an old assignment. When I picked out this dress at a thrift store, I found it too frilly for my taste but it seemed to be of really great quality, so I though, what the heck, I'll sell it. But now I'm changing my mind because I've been looking at a lot of asian/gyaru/Liz Lisa photos... I don't know why either. Actually it's because I was reading Malaysian fashion blogs for a while. Don't worry I won't be "transforming" - it's just an idea project.

It's been four days since I got back home from KL and Singapore, and I have had no rest or decent sleep yet, as it's been school and work in full force (but I'm not complaining, I'm so thankful for everything that happened this week). I've posted a lot of pictures on facebook (drag and drop) but blog posts will have to wait - I'll be indulging in rest and planning / me time today. See you in my weekend posts!

I'm surfacing for air now as I give you this series of accumulated outfits over the past two weeks! I was on blog-fast (as is an annual tradition) and also up to my neck with stuff (in my lame attempt to dismiss everything as trivial - far from it). I'm ending my stint with the best show on earth (huhu but I need to commit the remaining months to school and my plans - anyway, there's still web and I'm just believing that things will work out) - someday I'll come around to sharing all the BTS photos that Kevin has painstakingly taken to shooting all season. Midterm projects and papers happening! All at once! Last night I slept it off - ended up working faster today. Such is the state of my Saturday. Some moments the despair gets to me pretty bad. But two things run across me head 1) Excellence is an act of worship 2) There is no situation that God cannot make possible or insanely wonderful. You just have to trust him to take care of everything!

Only five more days of panicking / getting everything splendidly done - and then I'm off the KL! Cannot. Wait.
