I'm ditching the sketchbook section since I just don't use my sketchbook that much, anymore. I tend to do all of my conceptual work using the cintiq or tablet these days, and most of it ends up being fully colored and clean artwork. In the characters section, I uploaded the most recent versions of the Bhag character designs. I decided I liked the new version of K'lara better than the old one and started updating the other characters to match the style. I still need to redo Fassad's hair. Over the past weekend, I also started working on the TGG girls again, and I've uploaded a new pic of them in the characters section. The designs have changed a bit from the originals, but I think these work better with their personalities. I'm also going with a more TV-friendly color scheme and line style. It's good to occasionally go back to some of my own projects just to mix things up a bit.

Been a while

I will admit, I'm not much of a blogger and this being a site dedicated to myself as a professional probably doesn't help much. In any case, it's been a while since I last posted on here. I've been in and out of projects over the past few months. A pilot here, a video series there. Right now, I'm working on a theatrical short. It's more family friendly than some of my personal work, but I'm really enjoying the opportunity to work with traditional animation again. The project mixes live action actors with 2D animated characters and backdrops. There's a lot of green screen in use, but the final product should look pretty hot. We have a good team on the project and we're hoping to start hitting film festivals later this year. I encourage anyone who reads this to keep tabs ont he project, it's called "Barbie Jean." I won't go into plot details, but I will try to link the web site once it goes live.

I have also been moving forward with Bhag, a TV show concept I am hoping to pitch in the near future. I have updated my portfolio page with the most recent character art if people are curious about it. I have also updated my resume once again.

So far it looks like 2011 is going to be a busy year for me. Between these projects and some upcoming web ventures, I'll probably be animating through the Summer at the very least.

Minor Updates

I had to make some minor updates to my resume. You would think if you're showing up to Titmouse and doing the work in their studio, that you'd be working for them, but apparently I was working for Liquid Theory. Who knew? I guess next time I take one of those unpaid jobs I should ask which studio isn't signing my checks.

It's a cool show, though, so if you guys get Fear.net, definitely check out Mari-Kari. I would compare it to Happy Tree Friends for the violence factor, but I like Mari-Kari better since the violence seems justified and not just gratuitous. It's funny for the right reasons.

Updates

I recently moved and decided to do a little updating while I was changing my address on the page. My resume has been updated with a couple of more recent projects. The big edit, though, is that I have redone my reel. It now includes more of my professional work and weighs in at 2:45 rather then 30 seconds like the old one. I've also updated the titles on the reel to match the web site.

Lately the freelance and spec work has been building up. I see a lot of people in this industry complain about spec work and I can understand that there are people out there who really are willing to take advantage of animators, I've met a few myself, but I think my best connection by far at this point have been the people I have worked with on projects which didn't pay. You never know who you're going to meet doing these little side projects and sometimes the connections you make in the process are more valuable than the money you could have earned if that project you dedicated your weekends to came with a paycheck. Anyway, just a tip for some of the other people trying to get their names out there as animators.

Back to the drawing board...

So, I have been spending a considerable amount of time lately working on character designs for an upcoming project. Unfortunately, I can't post my work on the site at the moment. Still, I'm pretty happy with how things are turning out and I think the project has a lot of potential. I'll be working as lead animator and a co-producer on it as well as providing character designs and storyboards. Hopefully, I will be able to say more when the project starts getting closer to completion. Right now we're still working on finalizing the character designs and picking the vocal cast.

Beyond that, though, I did manage to find some time to put together another picture. This time it's line work for a cover concept for Bhag. It depicts a young Angus, but in a less cartoony style than the comic is used to. I wanted to put together some artwork that shows that I do have a decent understanding of real world anatomy amd can make use of that to make more realistic artwork, as well. It can be found in the characters section of my portfolio page.

Moving on...

Just as I got started on the new version of the Bhag comic, I find myself working on a new project. I can't really go into detail on what it is, but it will be a nice little foray into traditional animation which has gotten me a bit excited. Since moving to LA, I have mostly worked with TV and Flash animation, so it's kind of nice getting back to my roots.

Unfortunately, my sketchbook has been filled with character concepts and drawings related to this project the last couple of weeks, so I got nothing to update with this time. Maybe once I get these turnarounds and character concepts done, I can start sketching again.

Sketches

I'm adding a new section to my portfolio page. If you check out the bottom of the portfolio page on my site, you will find the "Sketchbook Roundup." I will be periodically updating that section with scans from my current sketchbooks. These are rough work, usually concept drawings, although there may be some life drawing in there from time to time. I do tend to use smaller sketchbooks since they are more portable, so most will be single images or a larger image with some smaller detail studies.

The first update to this section is work I did over my recent trip back to the DC area for the Thanksgiving holiday. It features some drawings of key characters from the two comics I work on as well as a couple of facial studies for a possible new concept.

Speaking of the comics, though, I have started working on the reboot of Bhag. I have an excellent new writer on the project and I think things are moving along smoothly. Updates will likely be a bit sparse at first since I still have some spec work to get done before I can really start hammering away at pages. Plus I do kind of want to get it looking good this time. Once I have a few pages done and maybe once Ben and I get into the rewrites for Teenage Girl's Guide, I will start replacing some of the comic pages on the Potfolio page with more recent work.

Finally...

It took a little while, but I managed to get the site linked up to my blogspot account. I did some web design and editing in high school and while attending my first college, but my area of expertise is mostly limited to basic HTML and Flash. I have to admit, things like RSS feeds are a little new to me.

Along with the snazzy direct link to my blog, I have also uploaded a few new images to my portfolio page. I am currently working on redrawing some of my older characters and replacing some of the previous turnarounds with action shots. To start off, I drew a couple of pictures of characters from the superhero concept I have been working on for a possible TV pitch. Despite the cartoon animal look, the series itself is more geared towards adults. At least, I doubt I could get away with the themes and storyline I have in mind with the 13 and under crowd.

I also posted an image of the main characters from a web series I was working on for some guys who host an itunes based radio show. Unfortunately the job kind of fell through when they failed to pay me the agreed upon rates, but that is why a lot of people, myself included, ask for prepayments on freelance work, these days. Since the characters are not going to be used for anything, I thought it would be a waste not to at least post them on the site. Although in hindsight, I kind of wish I had not drawn them with their hands in their pockets.

Next up will likely be the characters from "Crumbs". I am looking at possibly re-animating the short as a personal project. Working on it as a group project was fun and I really enjoyed directing, but trying to motivate a bunch of grad students who are in the middle of finishing up their thesis projects was unfortunately a losing battle, especially with the person who was working on the main character. I still like the concept, though. It is more dark humor and not as mindless as "Fight" (although sometimes I get a kick out of mindless low brow humor).

Before getting to that, though, I a currently working on a spec project for another director in the area. We have a deadline of the 15th in order to make the Sundance Festival, so I really need to get that work done before I worry about other projects. I won't go into details on it, yet, but there is some footage in my short reel of a rotund man with a bazooka which is from this project.

Getting Started

So, welcome to the new page. For those not in the know, my name is Aaron Seigo and I am a professional animator working out of Hollywood. I have recently decided to try a new approach on my web site and integrate a blog so I can keep people updated on what I am doing or just my general opinions on the state of the industry.

Just as a little intro for the first post, I'll say a few things about myself. As I said before, I am an animator, but for me animation goes beyond just being a job. I chose animation as my career of choice because drawing is my favorite activity over any other. I feel more at home in the studio than I do in my apartment. I have always had an interest in animation from my early years catching shows like Sebastian and Belle, the Little Prince and Danger Mouse on Nickelodeon to my high school years where I developed a taste for anime, to my college years where I started to once again develop a taste for Disney and classic Warner Brothers cartoons. Today I will watch just about anything and I try to keep myself versatile enough to work with any style.
