Shoe Shaped Bath Tubs: Bath tubs made for Women

2010-08-21T22:57:00.000-07:00

The shoe shaped bath tub, designed by Italian designer Massimiliano Della Monaca, is truly a woman's bath tub. It is designed to look like an elegant pump shoe with a skyscraper heel. Though the design looks like its painful to wear as a shoe, it is a perfectly shaped bath tub to soak in.

The bath tub is covered in precious glass mosaic tiles. The heel is 1650mm in height and the bath tub is 2700mm in length. Priced at $17,000 to $27,000 depending on the design, these shoe shaped bath tubs does not certainly come in cheap and are truly for women with money.

Shark-like boat runs underwater and jumps 12-feet in air

2010-08-21T22:04:00.000-07:00

Here is an amazing vehicle – a shark shaped submarine that performs feats like a shark. Its creator Rob Innes, however, doesn’t consider it a submarine but a cross between a plane and a boat. Dubbed the Seabreacher X, the boat is a rather an ultimate millionaire’s boy-toy: a James Bond-style craft that can dive under water, roll from side to side and jump 12ft into the air.

Not only is this, but Seabreacher X has many close resemblances to a white shark. It includes a dorsal fin, gaping jaws, rows of dagger-sharp teeth and measures 16.5ft in length which is almost identical to sharks’. Powered by a 260hp engine that enables the shark shaped boat to run 50mph above and 20mph below water is for the rich adrenaline-junkies and costs about £60,000 per unit.

Seabreacher X is a two seater boat that gives immense pleasure on and under the water. Also, the boat is quick and is capable to roll 90 degrees to the right and left. The boat plunge under the water with the push of a joystick and can remain there for 20 seconds. Thereafter, after gaining little speed, boat jumps out of the water in the air with the push of the controls in the cabin.

A Clock made from many clocks

2010-08-20T23:25:00.000-07:00

What name should this timepiece be given? A clock would be an under statement for this amazing design. It’s the father of all clocks, so name like Super clock goes apt for it. This giant clock is made from number of small clocks put together on the walls. The 12 old model clocks each marked with the time number is put around the two large hands. These hands tell the time by pointing to the smaller timepiece. What a creative idea from the designer. Creativity definitely has no limitations in true words.

Wind Power In Stormy Waters

2010-08-20T23:01:00.000-07:00

Offshore Wind Turbine Farms: Ambitious and Beautiful.

There is nothing like the promise of readily available and bountiful energy in our resource-strapped world. Based on data determining that average wind speeds at sea are higher than on land, the modern offshore wind farms promise to be exceptionally energy efficient. When the weather is calm they also look fetchingly beautiful:

But when the seas are rough, the graceful structure is put to the test, and it's not a fact that every turbine will survive:

The Horn’s Reef project, located 14 kilometres off Denmark’s West coast in the North Sea, is located in some of Europe’s roughest waters.
“There are other offshore wind parks in the world but everybody agrees that Horn’s Reef is the first ’real’ offshore wind park because of its size and its placement in the North Sea. So far, all other offshore parks have been placed close to land in protected waters“ says project manager Jens Bonefeldt. “The North Sea is considered to be one of the roughest stretches of water in the world.”

Floating wind turbine.
It is now possible to build offshore wind parks
at sea depths of 200-300 meters.

8 to 10 meter waves are expected at the site
(not counting nasty "global warming" storm surprises)

One of the turbines failed in spectacular fashion following a lightning strike, the blades disintegrated, hurling debris at speeds approaching 200 mph.
- A whole blade weighing over a tonne became detached from the VESTAS turbine.
- The pictures above show a spectacular failure of a turbine during a storm in Lichtenau, Germany (Thanks to Wilfred Heck for supplying these photographs).

Many Hollywood thrillers show a helicopter chase through the forest of such giant windmills. The havoc produced by the flying blades is usually quite spectacular...
Huge wind farms may be a dream come true, but it's also a challenge to designers and engineers, demanding a combination of experience and new thinking.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE OFFSHORE WIND FARM

In 2002 the world’s largest offshore wind farm was constructed at the Danish west coast. The Horns Rev wind farm is sited 14-20 km into the North Sea, west of Blåvands Huk, and represents the first phase in the Danish Government’s ambitious plan - to have wind turbines with a total capacity of 4000 MW in Danish waters before 2030.

Thanks to Gunnar Britse, photographer (all rights reserved), we can witness the grandiose operation of setting up a forest of windmills at various Dutch (and Swedish) offshore locations:

"The world’s first major offshore wind power plant has since December 2002 produced enough energy to run 150,000 Danish households. Eighty 2.0 MW turbines from the world’s leading wind turbine manufacturer Vestas are sited across an area of 20 sq. km." (source) With the Horns Rev project it will be possible to determine whether or not the Danish Government’s ambitious energy plan is feasible. And whether or not the long-bladed Goliaths will survive the harshest of North Sea storms.
