It's been a busy time of late at Arabian Coffees HQ.

We've been selling far and wide, spreading the news (and our love) for our beloved Qahwa (Coffee), and in the last month we're pleased to say we're selling greater amounts of ground coffee to the US, Japan and of course the UK.

However we're not getting complacent and the work in getting the word out about the greatness of Arabic Coffee must goes on!

That's why, today we're please to announce our new overarching campaign to promote Arabic Coffee called: Wake Up & Smell The Arabic Coffee!

We think Arabic Coffee (our brand in particular) is so, so great that we want the rest of the World to wake up to this fact too. Our campaign will aim to grab the attention of people, educate them about Arabic Culture and Arabic Food, and we may even be rolling out a few new varieties of coffee as well.

You probably gathered by now that we love Coffee, in particular Arabic Coffee! And while our fresh coffee is seriously good, we don't think we always need to be so serious when talking about our excellent ground coffee. So, maybe a little misguidedly or not, we've decided to have a stab at being humorous and created a brand new coffee cartoon blog - sample featured below.

Drawing on an all star cast from the world of coffee, it's really just a bit of fun that we hope will entertain you as much as it does us. About Arabic Coffee, myth or fact:

1) Is there really any difference between Arabic Coffee and Coffee that's typically available in the UK (Europe or the West)?

Yes there is; fact.

Arabic Coffee is more often than not flavoured with Cardamom and other spices, but this is not the only differentiator.

In addition, some coffees from the Middle East are made of a combination of differently roasted beans - for example, one coffee blend may feature beans that are dark roasted combined with medium roasted or even light roasted. Conversely some blends are made with just one type of roasted beans which is then blended with a spice. Are example of this in our product range is the Riyadh Blend of Coffee - light/golden roasted with Cardamom - it's very unique and largely unknown in the UK.

But the main interchangeable variables, that are quite unique to Arabic Coffee, are flavourings/spices, roasts of beans and the ratio to which these ingredients are featured in the blend (this is typically indicated by the Country or even City in which the blend originates from).

2) I understand you can only make Arabic Coffee on a stove, the traditional way Arabic people do?

This is a myth.

The traditional way Arabic Coffee is made is by using a Dallah (which is essentially a small saucepan) but this is not the only way to make the drink. All our Coffees are suitable for use with a Cafetière, and we would say this method is equally as good as using a Dallah, when you follow our instructions.

3) Arabic Coffee is very strong - much, much, much stronger than Coffee typical to the UK?

This is a part myth and part fact.

As mentioned in our answer to Q1 there is a huge amount of variety in Arabic Coffee, meaning that some of these varieties are strong, while at the opposite end of the scale some are incredibly refined and delicate.

Looking at our own range:

At the strong end we have the Damascus Blend of Coffee. This is a dark roast Coffee made of only one bean variety with no additional flavouring. In Syria (Damascus to be exact), there is a terrific cafè culture where people live their lives very frantically, on the go. Resultantly, the blend of Coffee that's become popular (to suit the lifestyle) is a Coffee that gives an intense, caffeine loaded hit to the drinker.

At the more gentle end of the scale, we have the Riyadh Blend of Coffee. This is a very unique and refined coffee, only made from golden roasted beans combined with Cardamom (some Saudi's also added Saffron for extra luxury). It gives off a light, part zesty, part biscuit-like aroma, and, when brewed, to most Westerners its complexion more closely resembles Tea than a Coffee! Be warned it's highly drinkable!

In between the two mentioned above, two Coffee varieties that are more in the middle in terms of taste would be Ramallah (medium-light) and Amman (medium-strong).

4) Why buy Coffee from a UK producer of Arabic Coffee, surely it's better to buy this Coffee from a supplier in the Middle East?

Myth.

Coffee, whether Arabic, African, Europe etc, does not travel well. It is a highly, highly absorbent to moisture and odours that are carried in the air. And if not packaged correctly or stored in a cool, dry place can begin to lose freshness and take on other flavours.

When we developed our Arabic Coffee Blends, we conducted stringent taste tests that compared newly imported Arabic Coffee to our own freshly roasted and ground blends. There was a clear winner - ours.

The fact is that the shorter the time between the coffee being roasted, ground and blended to the moment it's drank the better the taste. With this in mind, our aim is to supply our customers within 48 hours of them placing their order.

In addition, regardless of whether you order 250g or 250kg, we package all orders in increments of 250g bags - so, for example, an order of 750g will be divided into three separate 250g bags. This is to ensure lasting freshness for our customers who may wish to consume their order over a period of time. And, just to be clear, all packaging we use is sealed airtight to ensure lasting freshness.

What is Arabica?

Arabica is a word frequently used, and often abused, in the coffee industry. But what is it?

Well Arabica is in actual fact a variety of bush, from which Arabica coffee beans grow. Of all varieties of coffee bean (e.g. Robusta or Hybrid), Arabica coffee beans are the most consumed type in coffee the drink - which explains why this term, "Arabica", appears to be most frequently associated with coffee.

With some unscrupulous coffee producers and sellers making out that Arabica coffee is Arabic coffee, there's often confusion regarding the term "Arabica". Arabic coffee (our ground coffee) is different; it is not a variety of coffee bean but instead traditional blended coffee recipes that originate from the Middle East - making them a great accompaniment with Arabic food.

Arabic Coffee; flavoured or straight coffee?

We want to know what's your preference with Arabic coffee; do you prefer flavoured or straight, unflavoured ground coffee?

If you didn't know already some varieties of Arabica coffee are flavoured with spices (such as cardamom or saffron) that compliment the coffee making it especially tasty with sweet Arabic food like dates.

However, other varieties of Arabic coffee are without additional flavourings and simply comprise of differing types of roast ground coffee beans (ranging from raw to deep dark roast).

If you're unsure of which variety you'd prefer then our advice would of course be to try some.

For example, if flavour is your thing then take our luxurious Riyadh Blend. It's made to a traditional recipe using a variety of roasted beans and heavily flavoured with cardamom - it's really unique tasting coffee.

Or, alternatively, if a good solid hit of coffee only flavour is your preference, you must try our Damascus Blend. It's so rich and tasty, made from differing quantities of expertly roasted beans - a true coffee lovers delight!

How do you make the perfect cup of Arabic Coffee?

We often get asked, "how do you make the perfect cup of Arabic coffee?"

Well there are a couple of ways in which you can make Arabic Coffee; number (1) you can always use the Cafetière method, or, and in our expert opinion the better way, number (2) you can use a Dallah (traditional Arabic Coffee Pot). The latter method gives the drinker the very best cup of Arabic Coffee, but to make it perfectly depends on your skill and years of experience!

If you're new to making coffee with a Dallah, below are our recommended five steps that will send you on your way to making the perfect cup of Arabic Coffee:

Step 1) Fill the Dallah with water and begin to heat it over a medium flame

Step 2) Once near to boiling point, reduce the heat or remove the Dallah completely from the heat source

Step 3) Add the ground coffee slowly (about 1 large teaspoon per 50ml of water) stirring gently

Step 4) Add sugar (to taste if required) and reheat the coffee mixture gently but make sure that the coffee doesn't boil over

Step 5) Remove from the heat source and leave for a minute and then serve in a small cup - and there you have an excellent cup of Arabica Coffee.

We highly, highly recommend that you enjoy Arabic Coffee with sweet delights from Arabic Food - such as dates!

All of our blends of Arabica Coffee (either Amman, Damascus, Ramallah or Riyadh) can be made with a Dallah, or in a Cafetière should you prefer.

Arabic Coffee? What's so Different?

Those who are unfamiliar with, having not tasted truly authentic Arabic Coffee, will often say "surely Arabic coffee is just like any other coffee". We, and the millions of people who now drink Arabic Coffee throughout the World, would like to tell these people it isn't like any other coffee!

Unlike most coffee that is drank widely in the Western, developed World, Arabic Coffee (Qahwa or Arabica Coffee as it's sometimes called) is blended with differently roasted beans. Often depending on where you are in the Middle East or North Africa, you'll find some of the blended varieties are made of ground coffee that is either lightly roasted, golden (mid) roasted, dark roasted or even a mixture of the three. The balancing of these different grinds makes authentic Arabic coffee of the region very unique indeed.

Another variable that is prominent in authentic Arabic Coffee is the use of spices to flavour the coffee. Again, as with the differing types of roasted beans, the selection and degree to which spices are used to flavour the coffee differ depending on where you are in the Middle East.

For example, in Saudi Arabia they prefer a very prominent cardamom flavour, whereas in Syria they prefer pure coffee with no flavourings - see our Arabic Coffee range for the difference in blends.

The variety of coffees that come from the Middle East means there's a blend that suits nearly all tastes. We hope you find an Arabian Coffee that suits you too!
