Sorry for the delayed posting, I've been a bit busier than normal lately (which is a good thing!).

Here are some updates from my recent past.

1. Templar
No, not the Black Templar painting, just standard medieval stuff. This was a bunch of fun to paint and was done for a private client.

2. The Emperor Protects

Here's another recent commission, this time Warhammer 40,000 themed (surprise!). This piece was also done for a private client and was a real pleasure. I got to experiment with some new styles, paint warrior women (respectfully, I might add), and flex my Warhammer 40,000 muscles.

There are some videos available for this piece as well, I hope to release the speed paint and tutorial videos today if not soon (watch out for those updates).

3. Faith is My Shield

Hey folks,

I have some updates for you! I've been doing quite a bit of livestreaming lately, and I'd like to share them here.

Here's the current version of the painting I've been working during my streaming sessions- it's a futurist Hussar, based off of the Winged Hussars of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth in the 1700's. Of course, this is not a historically accurate piece, as you can tell by his fantastic mount.

I think we are about 30 hours into this painting so far (the livestreaming process tends to slow me down a bit) but I'm pretty happy with how this painting has come so far. I would like to do a little more work on the composition, but that will have to wait until next Sunday). I stream every Sunday at 6PM EST via my YouTube channel.

SUPER MASSIVE BLOG UPDATE!

So this blog entry is pretty expansive (and worth the wait!).

Announcement 1: The Clinic

First off, I have a huge announcement - starting next month, I will be offering tutoring services via my website.

Overview

This tutoring program, called 'The Clinic,' is a one-on-one tutoring program where I help developing artists augment their current skills over the course of one month. Rather than work in a group setting, where my attentions are divided between several students, the clinic offers a student my complete, undivided attention.

The clinic is structured in a series of ten, one hour lessons with me. Each lesson, I will review the work from your previous lesson (subject matter will change based on student) and, depending upon your learning style, I will do all in my power to improve your artistic abilities. As learning styles vary between students, I offer many different structures for each session, such as:

-Live draw-overs and retouches in Photoshop.
-Question and Answer sessions via telephone, Skype, or Google chat.
-Technical and theory explanations.
-Whatever method helps YOU understand the concept best.

Each lesson is accompanied by an assignment to improve the targeted skills we are trying to improve.

In the case of more eager students, there is the option of working towards a 'final project' to showcase the skills developed over the course of the clinic. If this is the case, we will spend forty-five minutes of each session reviewing your homework assignments and the last fifteen minutes critiquing and working on your final project.

I will also be available via email for quick questions and concerns. However, I will mostly be answering in-depth questions during our sessions.

Application

In order to apply, please fill out the form below. Within the message, please provide a link to your current portfolio as well as a "wish list" of things you would like to improve upon (e.g. composition, coloring, etc). Please also provide some details about your expectations for the clinic and your personal history working with the arts.

Once a potential student has submitted their application, I will take a look at their portfolio, take their wish list into consideration, and schedule a meeting with them to determine some realistic objectives and benchmarks for their clinic experience.

Cost

In total, this clinic costs $500. If a student wishes to do several continuous sessions, we can discuss that possibility after the first session concludes.

"Feel Good" Nonsense and Hard Truths.

Hey everyone,

So I was in the middle of work when I saw this thing pop-up in my Facebook feed.

I've seen this thing before, but it always rubs me the wrong way. It's quite possible that I've become jaded and no longer can really understand the plight of my fellow artists (for better or worse), but in my opinion this list is just some feel good fluff.

I'm going to try not to rant here, but in my opinion creeds like this are detrimental to the success of individuals. In many ways, it reminds me of kindergarten graduations or participation awards.

Anyway, here is my response to this list. Remember, 'agreement' means I agree with the listed items in that the numbered entry is erroneous. Also, keep in mind I am approaching this list through the lens of a commercial artist.

I absolutely disagree with this item. As an artist working in the industry, you need to know who you are competing with and where you stand among the competition. Furthermore, by comparing your art to other artists, you can see what techniques you can improve upon or sample different styles.
Disagree. Give them a reason to be proud of you when you start succeeding at something you are passionate about... and can afford to move out of their basement.
Agreed.
Unless you have carved yourself a nice profitable niche as "that guy" and are happy within that role, then yes, I agree. Be weary, however; niches have a way of becoming unfashionable so never become too comfortable within a certain set of constraints.
Disagree. A ton of struggling artists cannot understand why they are failing because they can't step back and see the obvious flaws of their work. It's ok to appreciate the progress you've made over the years, but your harshest critique should always be you. Seek out critique whenever it's possible and never "settle." Seek perfection but be prepared to never reach it.
Disagree. Do you like to eat and pay bills? Do you want to own a home or rent an apartment? Would you like to support a family? Unless you have the convenience of a massive inheritance or are independently wealthy, you need to consider your art career as your livelihood and take it very, very seriously.
Disagree, within reason. Society generally dictates popularity and availability of work. However, if you have the income to turn down certain types of work you don't particularly enjoy the flavor of, then don't do that type of art.
Agreed. This can tough when you have to explain to grandma what Slaanesh is all about.
Disagree. Guess who controls your source of income? If you can't stand working for a client, make sure to end the contract on amicable terms. Next time they come knocking, remember the experience and then decide whether or not you want to deal with that client again.
Agreed, to an extent. Always aim to be the greatest and best in your field - aiming for second best will ensure you never get to the top. However, be reasonable about your limitations and weaknesses. A true master might spend his entire lifetime dedicated to honing his craft - don't be surprised if you still can't draw feet right after a week.

Emperor's Shields Terminator: WIP Monochrome

Hey folks!

More painting goodies for you!

This is another private client piece, this time featuring a proud terminator of the original chapter, The Emperor's Shields.

As you might notice (if you are familiar with Forgeworld) this guy is wearing Tartaros pattern terminator armor and wields a thunder hammer and storm shield.

In the background, you can see a looming monument to Slaanesh spilling out a tide of writing daemonic tentacles from its warp portal.

Also, in the skies above, you'll notice a large, mysterious ship. This ship belongs to the Legion of the Damned, a mythical ethereal force of space marines.

So far, this painting has taken 7 hours. I have some more things to add before I head to color (cape on the terminator, chained bodies draping from the tower) but that shouldn't take too long. As soon as this painting is done, I'll start working on the videos for it, so you can expect some new tutorials in the coming week!

Necron Overlord Painting

Welcome back everyone!

I've got some new art for you today, as well as three videos to accompany it.
If you caught my last post, you know that I have been working on a new Necron themed painting, featuring a Necron Overlord of the Ogdobekh dynasty.

This painting took about 16 hours to do and was definitely a bit more challenging than normal. I received some critique that my previous work that my paintings were too dark and too brown. In order to remedy those issues, I've tried increasing the overall brightness of my composition as well as limiting my palette to a select chromatic range, rather than using every color of the rainbow.

Necron Overlord WIP

Hey folks!

I've got some lovely new stuff to share with you, so please step this way.

Here's a new painting I've been working on and yes, THERE WILL BE A TUTORIAL VIDEO AND SPEED PAINT to accompany the painting.

As you can hopefully tell, this painting revolves around an Necron Overlord (Warhammer 40,000) leading his warhost against some beleaguered and overrun Ultramarines. The client requested Ultramarines as the victims here and I was more than happy to oblige (the boys in blue have to lose every once in a while).

Anyway, below is my reference sheet as well as several WIP shots of the painting. I hope to get much of the color and rendering done tomorrow and to follow up with the video as quickly as possible.

Hey everyone,

After some grueling internet battles with YouTube, I have finally received monetization approval for two new videos. These videos pertain to the wonderful Kickstarter campaign I mentioned in a recent blog post (which I hope you have visited!).

Below is the piece I painted for this project, an Egalit adventurer examining some ancient hieroglyphs. Per usual, I have one lengthy tutorial video explaining my process and a second, shorter video which speeds through the painting process. Unfortunately, there is no audio for the second video as it was causing too many copyright issues.

News, Griping, Nutrisystem, and Alignments.

Hey folks,

Time for some new blogging. We have a lot to cover in this post, so let's get started.

News:

1. The time has come! I have officially given my two weeks notice at my day job and will be going full time freelance starting September 1st. This is a pretty terrifying prospect but I am excited, nonetheless.

2. The YouTube channel is blowing up! Just yesterday we passed over 1500 subscribers. Many thanks to all the subscribers and for anyone who has commented, liked, or shared my videos.

Griping:

1. My lovely enabler YouTube is being a giant pain. I have several new videos lined-up for you all to enjoy, but cannot share them yet as YouTube refuses to monetize them. Normally, when a video is submitted, YouTube will monetize my videos within a day or so and they are ready to go. However, this time around they have reviewed them, denied them, and are now reviewing my appeals.... awesome. If anyone has any tips for how to stream-line this process, please leave a comment as I am at my wit's end.

Nutrisystem:

So, as some of you may remember, several weeks (a month or so, I think) ago I began a bold experiment with Nutrisystem. Fortunately for me, I've been able to stick to the diet plan and have lost nearly 20 lbs. I currently have 12 lbs to go before I reach my goal weight.

Alignments:

Lastly, I saw some extraordinary (in the literal sense "out of the ordinary") behavior today which I will categorize using the Dungeons & Dragons Alignment Matrix.

1. Chaotic Evil Woman at grocery store. This woman, seeing a parked cart in the aisle, then parked her own cart in such a way that the aisle was entirely blocked. It wasn't an absent-minded action - she looked up at me, made eye contact, then maneuvered her cart so that one end touched the aisle wall and the other end touched the parked cart.

2. Neutral Neutral Kid at grocery store. This obese child was driving a cart in lazy circles near the butchery, all the while testing the abilities of his mouth to make sounds. His favorites were "bluh bluh bluh" and "kreeeonk!" I imagine that, over a long enough period of time, his alignment would have gone into the "evil" category as his antics would have gotten pretty annoying.

3. Chaotic Good (?) Man beside road. This guy....I don't even know. He was in his driveway near an intersection dancing on a yoga mat while listening to music on headphones, smoking a cigarette, and drinking from a giant container of "red drink." I put a "?" in parenthesis because he wasn't really "good" but he was entertaining.

4. Neutral Neutral Man outside of apartment building. This was another weird one, I'm still reconciling it in my head. As I was walking to my building, with arms full of groceries, a man stumbled out of the doorway. He was wearing skin tight, shiny gold hot pants. He didn't say a word and he didn't make eye contact, but he did proceed to run off. I'm not sure what I saw exactly, but I didn't ask questions.

I'm finally back from San Francisco and the Massive Black workshop...what a trip! Throughout the week, I learned some new Photoshop tricks, got some useful critique, and met some great new people.

Massacre at Sanctuary 101, with video!

Hey guys!

My newest painting, Massacre at Sanctuary 101, is now complete! This piece was incredibly fun to paint and, in my opinion, is one of my best paintings.

In total, this painting took about 11 hours to paint, not bad considering the Alpharius Omegon painting took 10.5 hours and the Black Templar painting took 23.

This painting posed a lot of challenges from the beginning. First of all, I never spent much time drawing Necrons. Believe it or not, the majority of my 40k art was done in high school (college, for my foreign readers) in the margins of my notebooks. While I did spend considerable amounts of time sketching Chaos marines and Tau (my two armies at the time), Necrons weren't high on my priorities (that was left to my friend Dave who played Necrons, at the time).

Secondly, I am still practicing my female figures, since most of my efforts over the past years have been directed at dudes in armor and overly-muscled barbarians. This painting offered a great challenge in conveying a strong female character without over-sexualizing her.

Thirdly, I have been trying very hard to incorporate dynamism into my paintings, focusing on movement and strong composition over the minutia I normally get lost in. With this in mind, I attacked the project with shapes and tones, not line and complex figures.

With these issues in mind, I began with a strong, loose, dynamic composition which helped me focus on the action and story-telling in the painting. I wanted to depict a sister of battle in a desperate struggle, utterly out-matched. Regardless of her rapidly approaching doom, the sister would be in an ardent rage, screaming litanies of hate against the foul xenos monster before her.

Here is my initial sketch:

As you can see, I've only thrown in the basic forms of the characters. I'm aiming to convey a composition, not the details within that scene.

My next sketch helped to define the characters a bit better, changing the poses of both figures slightly. I also started knocking in a quick background to establish location.

Here you can see some even larger changes. While the background remains loose, both figures have been tightened up a bit and some details have been added. Also, you'll notice the tail of the wraith now encircles the sister. Similarly, its left hand now reaches downwards onto the sister as he prepares to tear her apart.

The changes here are a bit obvious. At this stage I began detailing the sister and, more plainly, rendered out the background quite a bit. While I sadly didn't have access to the original White Dwarf magazine which featured this battle report, I imagined that the sister was defending a shrine world (a fairly common activity for sisters of battle). Furthermore, the architecture and baroque style of the background ties closely to the sister's own armor design, reinforcing the Necron's role as an 'invader.'

Lastly, I tweaked the arm position of the sister. Previously, her outstretched left hand had been lost against the wraith's tail.

On to coloring and rendering! Here is my first render pass, using minimal 'special effects.' The color was achieved by flattening the monochomatic sketch into a single 'overlay' type layer and then coloring with normal layers beneath. Also, I duplicated the overlay layer and applied a 'Gradient Map' in order to give highlights a yellow coloration and shadows a more ruddy one.

Who doesn't love special effects? Here I added some glows using color dodge layers and even added some hot gas to her muzzle flash. Also, you'll noticed the addition of a faint golden halo.

At this stage, a minor change took place. I found that the whole piece had become too saturated, too bright, and too contrasted. Everything seemed 'blown out,' so I used several adjustment layers to wrangle everything back together.

As a consequence of these adjustment layers, I had to rework some of the highlights in the piece, lest they be lost in a monotone. Also, I started reworking the sister's face, giving her a more harsh, enraged expression. You will also notice a slight tonal difference has been encouraged between the sister and the Necron wraith's claws and tail. This was achieved using 'lighten' layers and helped to differentiate the two figures in space.

Next, I added scraps of torn parchment from her armor as well as little bits of floating debris.

Finally, I added some doves to the upper right portion of the painting (the composition has been flipped since). These helped fill in some of the vacant space above the sister. Also, I added several lesser halos around the sister, helping to enforce her holiness and fervor. In a way, they almost appear like the sound waves emitted from her battle cry. Lastly, I retouched her face to lighten her nasolabial flaps (those dark creases around her nose and mouth). Furthermore, I softened her features slightly, just to make her appear less like a corpse.

Massacre at Sanctuary 101 : Sketch Complete!

Hey folks!

I've been working on of my favorite commissions of all time lately, something I was originally a bit apprehensive about. When my client asked for a "Sister of Battle fending off a Necron Wraith" I was definitely a bit nervous, seeing as I have never painted a wraith and have very, very little experience working with the sisters.

Regardless of any qualms I held, I dove at this project like it was my last and am definitely happy with how it's turned out thus far. Right now, the monochromatic part is done. Now, I just need to color and render (apply hues and extra effects/details) and we'll be done.

Alpharius Omegon Finished!

Hey guys!

So, this is a bit delayed due to problems outside of my control. I've had this piece finished for about a week now, but you my old enemy, YouTube, has been giving me no end of problem with monetization.

Anyway, I had to remove all my music from the speed paint, regardless of the fact that it was royalty free and had proper permission for usage.

In total, this piece took 10.5 hours to do, not bad compared to the Black Templar painting, which took 23 hours.

Alpharius Omegon Monochrome

Hey everyone,

I just finished the monochrome of the twin Primarch, very exciting!

My client requested a weapon swap. As you can see, both demigods are now toting demonic bolters and "billed" weapons (I went with a guisarme for inspiration).

Also, I took a lot of critique from my Black Templar painting to heart, and made sure to keep those "power-armored hips" in check.

Anyway, I hope you all like where it's going, I know I do!
