English Journalism: A journey | An adventure

Hi! I am Avantika, back with the answer to the new 'problem of my life' question of all the new awesome people who've just cleared IIMC EJ! 'Didn't get into Delhi. What now?' And just so that my opinion holds some weight, you must know that it comes from the year's topper. Yup! That's me! blush

We have all heard the story of the hare and the tortoise. Haven't we? Remember how the hare bet on the race only by the virtue of being a hare? And we all thought the tortoise was foolish enough to even agree! And we all put our bets on the fast and the furious.

Well, we all know how the story proceeds. But what we here are talking of, is the story of your careers. And we hope we have all learnt our lessons well enough, and won't make the same mistake of betting on the hare.

The IIMC Alumni Association has been facing a lot of questions about how doomed most of you are feeling because you didn't get through the 'best of all the centers', and what you must do next.

Truly, what you should do next is pack your bags and get ready for a journey that you'll cherish for a lifetime. 'Why' is what we will tell you!

First of all, regional centers have only 15 seats except Dhenkanal which has 50 students (no wonder it is as big as IIMC Delhi)! So... which of you doesn't enjoy attention? We all loved the focus our teachers had on us. How we hated those 80 students' classroom in schools and colleges where the teacher knew only a bunch of people in and out! Here, all of get to be the favorites!

Second, you need to know this awesome fact that your teachers come from Delhi only. And they visit you for two weeks and sometimes even more! Of course you have two teachers who teach you throughout the year. But then, there will be a group of awesome, young at heart 'friends', who will visit you and make your life a joyride! Some of our favorites were Rahul Jalali, Gopal Mishra, the very lovely Sangeetika Nigam and of course Ranjit Chatterjee!

The third lovely thing stems from the second. Hold your breath..... These fun people will stay with you! And, you just don't want to miss gossip about the journalists you've admired all your life over a frequent cup of chai and pakoras! These people have worked during Indira Gandhi's time. They've been friends to the names that you know only through books and TV! And when they'll tell you stories about them, you'd thank yourself for landing in a regional center. Trust us!

And of course such stories don't happen in the classroom, specially of 70. It happens when you relax in your hostel shorts in the lawn of your hostel! (which you'll end up calling your home!) (I so wanna go back right now)

And for all those who muttered under their breath asking 'isse kya hoga?' You'll get to learn. They're big names only because of their experience. Right? Books have seldom educated my friend!

So moving onto the fourth, we know your main aim is to get a job. Don't you worry fellas, none of us here are jobless. You should leave that worry at the feet of the beautiful Saraswati outside IIMC Headquarter in Delhi. :)

Fifth. You know, our generation has been tagged as the adventurers. Cause we love to travel. We love to explore. And we love selfies!

And do you really think the hustle bustle of this crazy Capital is going to give you those amazing moments? I will tell you what will...

Starting from Jammu, from your windows you can see the hills. When the early morning azaan will wake you up with the saffron sun's rays... You'd never hate mornings! And of course, an FB update is mandatory! And, for heaven's sake, Jammu doesn't have any unrest! (Plus Katra is only half an hour away!)

Dhenkanal. There is an awesome huge campus that awaits you. And you know what, they have a newspaper museum too! And the whole campus is located among the hills! Just like disneyland!

Aizawl. Have you any friends who are north eastern? Aren't they the politest people? The place is similar. So peaceful and so so so green. In winters, you'll have clouds visiting you. (No exaggeration) *dream like*

Amravati. Forests. Greenery. Pollution free. No pimples. ;) Plus Maharashtra. Mumbai and Goa so close. Need I say more?

Kottayam. People spend lakhs to visit Kerala. You'll stay in its twin! There is no form of beauty that'll get missed there. Just go for a walk and voilà... You have a cover pic ready!

Oh and, these places are not expensive as Delhi is.

Seven, you'll have a place in your pockets, about which you'll know inside out. Isn't that a great feeling?

Eight, your head would be K M Shrivastav. Yes I made this a separate point, and you'll know the point I'm trying to make once you're a part of the regional centers.

Next needs a *Drumroll*

Nine. From two years, the toppers of EJ have been from Jammu. And this time top ten ranks have been only from regional centers. 4 awesome beings belong to Jammu, while 6 belong to Dhenkanal, Kottayam got 1 and so did Aizwal! (All the math gurus, I know 4+6 is 10; but four guys scored similar marks! )

Yuhoo!

I am sure there is a ten and an eleven and an infinity. But what would you find out if we told you everything?

Journalism is all about moving around. Remember the keywords ‘leg work’. If you are someone who wants to stay in your hometown and never move out… We suggest, you must consider your career option once again !!

So, just as I said before, get packing! You can thank us later.

That brings us to the end of this year’s IIMC Entrance Counselling. This year 36 alumni contributed to the blog with advice on the written exam, while 34 contributed on how to ace the GD-PI.

Go, Have Fun And Nail It !

Mani Sharma is a 2012-13 RTV alumna and is currently working with Red FM, Indore as a Radio Jock. She believes that everything can be changed but nothing can be changed until faced.

Kiss it folks! I mean keep it simple and short. Blabbering stuff is a strict no no. Do not be pretentious and it is needless to say that current affairs should be on your finger tips. Be confident and maintain an eye contact with the interviewer to make a good impression.

Presentation is key too so dress smartly. And before I forget guys, unless you are being interviewed for EJ, use the language you are most comfortable with and can express freely.

Also do not beat around the bush and be to the point. Facts are sacred and opinion is free, express it but learn to listen and respect what others have to say.

Enough of the gyan, make the most of this opportunity and kill it!

Prep Talk For GD & Interview

Tania Ameer | After graduating in English Honours from Sri Venkateswara College (Delhi University) in 2006, I did Radio and TV journalism from IIMC (2006-2007). Immediately after that I started working with 'DD News' and then shifted to 'News X'. In 2008 I started my stint in print journalism with a Delhi-based Tabloid 'Metro Now' where I covered features. In 2009 I shifted to the Magna Group which includes magazines like Society, Stardust, Savy and others. While in 2012 I joined 'Millennium Post', a Delhi-based newspaper. Here I cover politics and the government. I am also a visiting faculty at IIMC.

When you have cleared the written test at IIMC, the next stage is clearing the Group Discussion (GD) and interview round. For both try and stay calm and be confident.

For Group Discussion

- Be confident and assertive but do not go over board and interject constantly

- Make your point and blend with the conversation after that

- Have a key point in mind on the topic and make your presence felt by asserting it

- There should be a focus on this being a discussion and not a verbal duel

- Remember it is how and what point you put across rather than how high your pitch rises

- Do not stay quiet through out the GD interact and definitely make your point felt in the discussion

For Interview

- Be calm and listen to the questions posed to you by the panel

- There are some expected questions like why journalism - print or tv / advertising and public relations. Take your time and answer them. Link them to your educational background in under graduation or post graduation.

- You might also be asked where you see yourself 5/10 years down the line?

- According to your area of interest you can be asked questions example lets say your interest is in politics. So you can be asked about the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections and what made Narendra Modi win.

- You can be asked about your hobbies example reading, painting... Then the question that follows would be which author/painter you admire and why??

- There can be general questions about your background (family/city) example if you say Lucknow you can be asked about the cuisine,music or culture

- Be yourself and mostly importantly be self-confident

- Have a conversation and not an argument

10 Things To Keep In Mind For Your GD-PI

Shivani Tiwari of Ad-PR (2010-11), has been into media communications and planning, also into handling media accounts from Airtel to consumer researches. She is a media researcher by day and blogger & observer by night.

GD-PI is all about smart time management and articulation. It’s like showing the examinees the trailer of a movie that you are. Ensure what you show would pique their curiosity and make them believe that you are worth a shot.

1. Do not stress, most importantly. You will feel more spontaneous and confident if you stress less and speak/interact naturally.

2. Read what the last year was about (important controversies and events) and save yourself from embarrassment of not knowing the bigwigs

3. Ensure that you have an opinion on things that matter- Elections, IPL, FIFA, Bollywood (these might be raw and unadulterated opinions but that’s what’s important too)

4. Pacify yourself and do not play blame games in the group discussion session or make any religious/strong political comments

5. Be more appreciative, respectful and listen patiently to the other participants during the discussion

6. Don’t beat behind the bush if you don’t know.

7. Decide well in advance what you will wear so that you are more comfortable during that day even if you have to end up waiting for few hours for your turn. Do not overdress and make it look like a matrimonial match meeting.

8. Be prepared for your cliché interview questions like “tell me about yourself’, “why you want to join this college”, “why did u drop a year”, “what are your hobbies”, “who is your favorite thinker” etc.(this means introspect on your choice and decisions so that you sound clear as a candidate)

9. If you have a story, narrate it well. It should not sound like a cooked up tale or a crammed narrative. (Especially in interviews)

10. Don’t use adjectives to describe yourself unless you can substantiate your attribute with a story. (Like saying “I am creative “, but why explain that)

इंटरव्यू में मौलिकता ही एक्स फैक्टर है

सुमित सुन्द्रियाल हिन्दी पत्रकारिता विभाग के 2012-13 बैच के छात्र हैं. कैंपस सेलेक्शन से आईबीएन7 में जो एक बार लैंडिंग की तो फिर वहीं ग्राउंडेड हैं.

सबसे पहले तो आप सबको बधाई कि आप लोगों ने एंट्रेंस टेस्ट पास किया और अब इंटरव्यू स्टेज पर पहुंच चुके हो. तैयारी तो अच्छी चल ही रही होगी. उसमें भी ज्यादा कुछ है नहीं. सिर्फ़ बीते एक-दो महीनों के कुछ ख़ास मुद्दे हैं जिनके बारे में जानने की जरूरत है. वो भी अभी तक कर ही लिए होंगे. अगर नहीं किया है तो भई अब वक्त कम है, जितना हो सकता है जान लें.

इंटरव्यू के लिए क्या करना चाहिए, क्या नहीं, ये आपको पता तो होगा और उससे भी ज्यादा आपको अब तक पता चल चुका होका इस ब्लॉग में मिले टिप्स के जरिए. इसलिए ज्यादा कुछ बचता नहीं बताने को. फिर भी अपने ही इंटरव्यू के अनुभव से कुछ तो बता ही सकता हूं.

पहली और सबसे जरूरी बात- इंटरव्यू आपका है, सामने वाले का नहीं. जवाब आपको देना है. बोलना आपको है. सामने पैनल में बैठा शख्स कोई शिकारी नहीं है कि आपने आवाज की और आपका शिकार. नहीं बोलेंगे तो जरूर आप अपनी इस गलती के शिकार होंगे. इसलिए एक भी मौका ऐसा नहीं आए कि आप चुप हो जाएं. कहने का ये मतलब है कि जवाब दीजिए. जितना आता है, उतना जरूर दीजिए. नहीं आता तो भी विनम्रता के साथ बताइए कि नहीं आता. आपका ये रवैया भी इंटरव्यूअर को जीतने का जरूरी फैक्टर है.

और एक बात. जिस तरह से रिटेन टेस्ट में सीमित शब्दों में लिखना होता है उसी तरह इंटरव्यू में भी अपने जवाब सीमित रखें. लंबे जवाब एक तो गैर जरूरी होते हैं, दूसरे आपको उलझाने के लिए काफी होते हैं. सीमित जवाब आपकी शख्सियत को प्रभावी बनाने का काम करता है. काउंटर प्रश्न की संभावना कम होती है लेकिन रिलेटेड प्रश्न बढ़ सकते हैं. बाकी आपका जो विस्तृत ज्ञान है उसके लिए कोर्स के दौरान भरपूर वक्त है.

अब बात आती है आत्मविश्वास की. इंटरव्यू में सफलता सबसे ज्यादा इस पर ही निर्भर करती है कि आप अपने जवाब को लेकर कितने आश्वस्त हैं. इंटरव्यू में ज्ञान से ज्यादा आत्मविश्वास काम आता है. ऐसा नहीं है कि इंटरव्यू लेने वाले गलत जवाब पर डांट देंगे या फिर खुद को श्रेष्ठ दिखाने की कोशिश करेंगे. बल्कि वो आपसे आपका श्रेष्ठ निकलवाने के लिए आत्मविश्वास की परीक्षा लेते रहेंगे. अपने जवाब पर टिके रहना जरूरी है, चाहे गलत भी हो. आपको लगता है कि ये सही है तो कहिए कि सर/मैम मेरी जानकारी में ये जवाब है. आपका ये ईमानदार रवैया आपके काम हमेशा ही आएगा.

लेकिन ये बात ध्यान रखिएगा कि आपको हर हाल में ईमानदारी रखनी है. झूठ का सहारा आपको किसी भी अंजाम तक नहीं पहुंचाएगा. और कम से कम अपने बारे में तो ईमानदारी रखिए. आपको क्या करना है, आपकी पसंद क्या है, कैसे इस कोर्स में पहुंच गए, चाहे जो भी कारण हो या जो भी जवाब हो, बस सच और ईमानदार होना चाहिए.

एक आखिरी बात. आपके किसी साथी से क्या सवाल पूछा गया या उसने क्या जवाब दिया और उस पर इंटरव्यू पैनल की प्रतिक्रिया क्या रही, इससे बिल्कुल भी प्रभावित या विचलित होने की जरूरत नहीं है. न चाहते हुए भी ये प्रवृत्ति अक्सर सामने आती है. याद रखिए, सवाल एक जैसे हो सकते हैं लेकिन आपसे हमेशा नए जवाब की उम्मीद की जाएगी. ध्यान रहे कि आईआईएमसी में आपकी पत्रकारिता को निखारा जाता है. पत्रकारिता तो आपमें पहले से है तभी आपको इंटरव्यू का बुलावा आया है. आप जैसे हैं, वैसे रहें. मौलिकता ही आपका एक्स फैक्टर है.

बाकी क्या मुद्दे आजकल चल रहे हैं, ये आप सबको पता ही है. इसलिए अब तैयार रहिए आईआईएमसी परिवार का हिस्सा बनने के लिए. जल्द ही किसी दिन मिलेंगे आईआईएमसी में.

Be Confident; Mould The Interview Your Way

I have heard many times that some students do well in IIMC written exam but fail to make a mark when it comes to interview. The confidence they exude in writing their answers, vanishes in the air when they go for the interview.

This happens due to the pressure of the interview and nervousness. Confidence is the key to success in any interview and you will be confident when you are equipped with information about the field you are getting in.

If you are confident, you can mould the interview your way through your answers. When asked about your favuorite newspaper, last book your read, last movie you watched, which beat you prefer; you should name things you are confident to speak about.

If you don’t know the answer to a certain question, instead of making a guess and making a fool of yourself, simply tell the interviewer that you don’t know the answer. He won’t shoot you down if you don’t know the answer but it will definitely send a wrong message if you beat around the bush and give an inappropriate answer.

Interviewer may also ask tricky questions. For example: What is the difference between American English and British English. If asked such question do not jump into conclusion immediately. Take few moments to understand the question, and then answer accordingly.

Take care of the following before you go for the interview:

• You should be aware of all the issues that have been in news for last couple of months, the changes made in the government and the corporate sector.

• Do remember the name of the Editor-in-chief of the news paper you read. Also the name of the special pages and the columnists who write for that news paper.

• It’s very important to know about the place you come from, i.e. any river that flows in your home state, the name of the MP and MLA of the area you come from.

• Prepare a good answer for your hobby. For example, if you say reading novels is my hobby, you may expect the interviewer to ask about some writers.

• Do prepare an answer for questions such as: Which book you read last? Which T.V. serial you like to watch? Which movies you watched last? Why journalism? Why IIMC? Etc.

सरल और स्पष्ट रहें, जवाब में जलेबी न बनावें

अभिषेक कुमार चंचल हिन्दी पत्रकारिता विभाग के 2013-14 बैच से हैं. कैंपस में सिने मंच के माध्यम से खूब रंग जमाया. सामाजिक कार्यो में रुचि रखते हैं. जेएनयू में काम करने वाले मजदूरों के बच्चों को पढ़ाने का काम किया. इसी रुझान ने मीडिया हाउस की जगह सामाजिक संगठन में पहुंचाया. गांधी फेलोशिप के लिए चयन लेकिन इरादा पर्यावरण के मुद्दे पर काम करना. फिलहाल ग्रीनपीस के लिए गांव भ्रमण में हैं. अखबारों के लिए स्वतंत्र लेखन भी.

देश में पत्रकारिता के सबसे प्रतिष्ठित संस्थान भारतीय जनसंचार संस्थान में दाखिले के अंतिम राउंड की शुरुआत में दो दिन ही शेष हैं. मीडिया में कॅरियर बनाने के इच्छुक छात्र इस अवसर को गंवाना नहीं चाहते. कुछ की तैयारी हो चुकी होगी लेकिन कुछ अब भी कन्फ्यूज होंगे. हम भी ऐसे ही थे. घबराना नहीं है.

आपका ज्यादा समय न लेते हुए सीधी बात. बचे हुए दिनों में कैसे करें तैयारी. आईआईएमसी के किसी भी कोर्स के साक्षात्कार की तैयारी के लिए जरुरी है कि आसपास हो रहे घटनाक्रम की जानकारी रखें. देश- दुनिया की जानकारी तो रखिए ही, आप जिस क्षेत्र से आते हैं, वहां की राजनीतिक, आर्थिक, सामाजिक व सांस्कृतिक हलचलों के बारे में भी अपनी जानकारी मजबूत कर लें. घटनाओं और बदलाव पर नजर हो. अवलोकन करने की क्षमता होनी चाहिए.

आप अपनी रुचि के विषय पर पकड़ मजबूत बना लें. साक्षात्कार में साक्षात्कार बोर्ड के सदस्यों को अपने विषय की तरफ ले जाने की कोशिश करें. किसी भी प्रश्न का जवाब आत्मविश्वास से दें. जिसका जवाब नहीं आता, सीधे मना कर दें.

जवाब सरल और स्पष्ट देने का प्रयास करें. जलेबी न बनावें. किसी भी जानकारी को समझदारी के साथ बेहतर ढंग से व्यक्त करें. अगर आप किसी भी मसले पर स्पष्ट विचार रखते हैं तो साक्षात्कार में सफलता हासिल कर सकते हैं.

इसके साथ ही इन सवालों के लिए तयशुदा तैयारी रखें- आप पत्रकारिता क्यों करना चाहतें हैं? अपने बारे में पांच अच्छी और पांच बुरी बात बताऐं? आपकी रुचि क्या-क्या है?

लिखित परीक्षा में सफल साथियों को मेरी तरफ से शुभकामनाएं. दिल में लगन हो और खुद पर विश्वास हो तो आईआईएमसी में प्रवेश आसान है. मैं जानता हूं कि आईआईएमसी में प्रवेश के लिए कितनी मेहनत करनी पड़ती है, कितना धैर्य रखना पड़ता है.

अब बस एक कदम दूर हैं आप अपनी मंजिल से. जिनका इस वर्ष नहीं हो पाया है या जो इंटरव्यू में सफल नहीं हो पाते हैं वो हताश न हों क्योंकि अगर आपको अपने ऊपर विश्वास है तो आप बगैर आईआईएमसी आए भी सफल पत्रकार बन सकते हैं. इंटरव्यू में सफलता के लिए आपको तीन चीजों पर ध्यान देना होगा.

- आपका आत्मविश्वास

- आपका अध्ययन एवं ज्ञान

- आपकी अभिव्यक्ति

सब कुछ सही है. आपके पास हर तरह का ज्ञान है. आपके पास अनुभव भी है लेकिन इन चीजों का फायदा तभी मिलेगा जब आप इंटरव्यू के दौरान खुद को अच्छे से अभिव्यक्त कर पाएं अन्यथा.

कुछ कड़वी सच बताता हूं. शायद आपको अच्छा न भी लगे. अगर आप टीवी के सफल पत्रकारों को देखकर या एंकर बनने या फिर प्लेसमेंट के लिए आईआईएमसी में प्रवेश पाना चाहते हैं तो ये आपका भ्रम है. इससे बेहतर आप दूसरों को मौका दे दें. ये सब मेहनत और परिश्रम से आगे जाकर मिलेगा. आईआईएमसी में आपको खुद को निखारने का एक प्लेटफॉर्म मिलता है. इंटरव्यू देते समय इन चीजों का ध्यान रखें.

- आप जिस जगह से आते हैं, उसके बारे में अवश्य जान लें. वहां के सामाजिक, राजनीतिक, ऐतिहासिक और दूसरी रोचक चीजों के बारे में आपसे पूछा जा सकता है.

- आपसे आपके बारे में पूछा जा सकता है. आपके बारे में जानने के बाद आपसे ही संबंधित कुछ और प्रश्न किए जा सकते हैं.

- जो भी बोलें, स्पष्ट बोलें, सच बोलें और सरल बोलें.

- आप वहां ज्ञान देने का रिस्क न लें. इंटरव्यू ले रहे लोग आपसे ज्यादा ज्ञानी हैं.

- पत्रकारिता क्यों करना चाहते हैं, ये सबसे कॉमन सवाल है. अपनी समझ बनाकर जाएं.

- किसी सवाल का जवाब तभी दें जब आपको अच्छे से आता हो. इंटरव्यू के दौरान हां में हां न मिलाएं. वो कई बार आपके आत्मविश्वास को चेक करने के लिए गलत बातें भी बोल सकते हैं.

- आपकी समझ, आपकी सोच और आपका व्यवहारिक ज्ञान ही आपका एंट्री कार्ड है. बाकी सारे ट्रंप कार्ड फेल हो जाते हैं.

- जिस प्रश्न का जवाब आपके पास न हो उसके लिए आप शालीनता के साथ मना कर दें. ये पॉजिटिव चीज है. इसके लिए नेगेटिव मार्किंग नहीं होगी.

- KISS (KEEP IT SIMPLE AND SORT) फॉर्मूला को अपनाएं. यही आपकी सफलता की कुंजी है.

- लिखित परीक्षा से आपको चुना गया है इसलिए खुद को किसी से कम न समझें.

सुनियोजित तरीके से तैयारी करिए और अपने ऊपर भरोसा रखिए. फिर आईआईएमसी क्या सारे दरवाजे आपके लिए खुले होंगे.

First off, congratulations for making it to the interview round. Now, if you eat, sleep and drink news and social media, enjoy reading and writing, and are any or all types of crazy, you fit the bill for IIMC.

Here are a few suggestions to help you reach that beautiful campus in JNU.

Stop freaking out: Firstly, stop freaking out. It’s just an interview. You made it till here. Pat yourself for it, and be confident. Also, a lot of English journalism aspirants are not sure if they would have a GD. In 2012, we directly had interviews. No GD. So, be prepared in case that happens.

Read magazines: Eat, sleep and drink news magazines (and of course papers, but for last-minute preparation, magazines can do wonders) for last-minute revision.

If politics is not your strong point, don’t worry: If you are not passionate about politics as you are about other things such as sports or fashion, don’t worry. Journalism is a wide field and there is space for everyone here. Of course, being up-to date with current affairs is necessary, but, at the same time, if you like other thing, don’t shy away from talking about them in your interview.

Show off: A little show off never killed anybody. If you don’t tell the interviewers what all you have done in the past, how would they know what you are capable of? So make sure you mention about that internship you did a year ago, which you otherwise thought was useless. Also, if you have any kind of published work, get it all with you and proudly share it with them.

Wear formals: During my time, not many people - especially girls - wore formals to the interview, except me. It made me stand out and worked in my favour. So, I’d suggest you to wear formals. Buy yourself a full-sleeved shirt to go with crisply ironed pants and hair neatly tied in a pony. Also, don’t forget the smile! Nobody likes talking to an expressionless face.

Prepare answers: Prepare answers to questions that you are expecting. Why do you want to get into journalism? Why did you choose journalism over AD/PR or vice versa? If you have work experience, why do you want to study when you can work? These are only a few. Think of more and be ready with the answers.

Make points: Give pointers wherever possible. They any day read better over your three-page long essays. Also, it is very important to stick to the word limit. If you have a 10-mark question, do not write more than a page. There is no competition to fill maximum sheets here.

Take notes: If you, like me, are not blessed with a great memory, make sure to jot down notes. Scribble whatever you read and read it when you are on your way to the college.

Outstation students, don’t worry: Getting thoughts such as, ‘Would Delhites get preference over me?” if you are an outstation student are common. However, I can assure you that if you are deserving, you will get through. Quick fact: Around 70 % of my classmates were not from Delhi.

And lastly, don’t be heartbroken if you don’t get through. A year later, you will be in the same, if not better, position if you work at a media house instead, as would be your IIMC friends.

रंजीत रंजन रेडियो एवं टीवी पत्रकारिता विभाग के 2010-11 बैच के छात्र रहे हैं. उन्हें अपने बैच का प्रसार भारती पुरस्कार भी मिला था. फिलहाल आकाशवाणी, नई दिल्ली में समाचार संपादक.

भारतीय जनसंचार संस्थान में नामांकन के लिए साक्षात्कार में महज कुछ दिन बचे हैं. ऐसे में मुझे 2010 के वो दिन याद आ रहे हैं जब मैं भी साक्षात्कार की तैयारी कर रहा था. सच में, बहुत मश्किल था उस पल को गुजारना. खैर, साक्षात्कार हुआ, मैं रेडियो एवं टेलीविजन पत्रकारिता विभाग के लिए चयनित हुआ. आज आकाशवाणी समाचार में बतौर समाचार संपादक काम कर रहा हूं.

साक्षात्कार के लिए चयनित साथियों से ये कहना चाहता हूं कि साक्षात्कार के लिए आत्मविश्वास से लबरेज होकर जाएं. यह सवाल दिमाग में नहीं आने दें कि अगर चयन नहीं हुआ तो क्या होगा? क्योंकि जैसे ही यह सवाल आपके दिमाग में आएगा, आत्मविश्वास डगमगाएगा और साक्षात्कार के दौरान आप सवालों को लेकर घबराहट महसूस करेंगे.

हम जब भी साक्षात्कार के लिए जाते हैं तो हमारे दिमाग में यह बात होती है कि साक्षात्कारकर्ता हमारी जानकारी को और जानकारी की गहराई को मापने की कोशिश करेगा. जबकि ऐसा नहीं है. लिखित परीक्षा पास करके आप यहां पहुंचे हैं यानी देश-दुनिया और पत्रकारिता की जानकारी आपको है. अब आप उन चीजों की मौखिक व्याख्या किस तरह करते हैं, जो बातें आप करते हैं उसके पक्ष या विपक्ष में क्या तर्क आप पेश करते हैं, और जो भी करते हैं वो कितने आत्मविश्वास के साथ करते हैं, इसी की परीक्षा साक्षात्कार में होती है.

अगर किसी सवाल का जवाब आपके पास नहीं है तो शालीनता से स्वीकार कर लें. यह दिखाने की कोशिश न करें कि आपको आता है मगर आप बयां नहीं कर पा रहे हैं या अभी-अभी भूल गए हैं. और हां, इस सवाल का जवाब तो बिल्कुल अच्छे से सोचकर जाएं कि आप पत्रकार क्यों बनना चाहते हैं?

अभी दो-तीन दिन का समय आपके पास है तो एक सप्ताह के अखबारों को अच्छे से पढ़ें और उसका विश्लेषण करें. ये तो बताना बहुत मुश्किल है कि आप क्या-क्या पढ़ें फिर भी केन्द्र की नई सरकार के सामने चुनौतियां, नई सरकार से उम्मीदें, उपराष्ट्रपति की चीन यात्रा, विदेश मंत्री की बांगलादेश यात्रा, प्रधानमंत्री की भूटान यात्रा, दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय नामांकन विवाद, साईं पूजा विवाद जैसे कई विषय हैं जिस पर आप गहराई से नजर रख सकते हैं.

चलते-चलते बस इतना कहूंगा कि आप एक अच्छे पत्रकार हैं तभी आपको साक्षात्कार के लिए बुलाया गया है. आत्मविश्वास बनाएं रखें.

Preparing For The IIMC Interview

First of all congratulations on clearing the written test. Now the next step would be to prepare for the interview. I have a few tips which should come in handy during your interview.

Read the day’s newspaper: Give special emphasis on the lead story. Do some research on the lead story. Try to formulate opinions based on facts by referring other newspapers and the internet of course.

Current affairs: Keep yourself up to date with all the latest happenings. Keep an eye on news that is trending. An easy way to do that is to visit news.google.com. You’ll find all trending news items here. If you’re already doing it then you are on the right track.

Sound genuinely interested and not desperate: What I mean here is to act normal and not over exaggerate.

Here is an example which will help you understand what I mean:

A) Sir I’ve always wanted to be a journalist. Whenever I see Barkha Dutt reporting, I imagine myself in her place. I want to bring great changes to the society by becoming a journalist. I want to empower the oppressed.

B) I am intrigued by the process. I love to keep myself update with the current affairs. My area of interest is International affairs. I want to pursue this interest at a higher level by becoming a journalist.

Hope you’ve got my point.

Keep calm: It’s an interview not an interrogation. Be clear in what you want to say. You can always disagree with something an interviewee says, provided you have solid enough reason.

Fake victory sign: This is something I saw on nat geo , hence the credit goes to them. While you are waiting for your turn to come, just take a moment for yourself and go somewhere no one can watch you, ideally the washroom and raise your hands as if you’ve won a race or scored a goal.

This fake victory expression reduces stress and helps you perform better.

Finally: All the best, hope to see you in one of the centers of IIMC. And even if you don’t get through, remember, great journalists have come up without any formal training.

खूब पढ़िए और ईमानदार रहिए

विनम्रता चतुर्वेदी हिन्दी पत्रकारिता विभाग के 2012-13 बैच से हैं. सीएनबीसी आ‌वाज में इंटर्नशिप के बाद एनबीटी, लखनऊ की लॉन्चिंग टीम का हिस्सा बनीं. फिलहाल एनबीटी, दिल्ली में कॉपी एडिटर.

सबसे पहले लिखित परीक्षा क्वॉलिफाई करने के लिए बधाई. आप देश के सबसे अच्छे शिक्षण संस्थानों में से एक का हिस्सा बनने से बस चंद कदम दूर हैं. ये छोटी सी दूरी बस थोड़ी सी समझदारी से पूरी की जा सकती है. यूं तो किसी भी इंटरव्यू का कोई सेट फॉर्मेट नहीं होता, लेकिन सभी एक-दूसरे से कुछ अलग और कुछ समान होते है.

सबसे पहले बात सामान्य सवालों की जो पूछी ही जाएंगी. हम अक्सर अपने नाम, घर-परिवार और इलाके के बारे में जानते तो बहुत कुछ हैं, लेकिन इस पर इंटरव्यू के लायक तैयारी नहीं करके जाते. ध्यान रखिए, ये सवाल ही एंट्रेंस गेट हैं. अगर इनका जवाब देने में हिचकिचाहट हुई तो आगे के सवालों में कॉन्फिडेंस डोल जाएगा. मसलन, अगर आप उत्तराखंड के किसी गांव के रहने वाले हैं तो आपको वहां की खेती-बाड़ी, जलवायु वगैरह के बारे में भी पता होना चाहिए. इन सवालों का जवाब चाव से दें. हो सकता है आगे के सवाल भी यहीं से उठें. घर के सदस्यों के बारे में भी पूछा जा सकता है. कम से कम शब्दों में अपने पारिवारिक बैकग्राउंड को बताएं.

अब बारी हैं उन सवालों की जिनके लिए आईआईएमसी मशहूर है. सबसे बड़ा प्रश्न, पत्रकारिता क्यों करना चाहते हैं? किसी किताब में इसका जवाब नहीं मिलेगा. आप वही बताइए जो आप महसूस करते हैं. आपकी सोच यथार्थ के करीब होनी चाहिए. ये तो कतई मत कहिएगा कि मैं क्रांतिकारी टाइप कुछ करना चाहता हूं. दुनिया बदलना चाहता हूं. वगैरह वगैरह. इस सवाल के लिए जटिल जवाब देने के बदले छोटा सा प्रभावशाली जवाब दीजिए.

इसके बाद एक संभावित सवाल हो सकता है कि पत्रकारिता में किस फील्ड में जाना चाहते हो? यानी पहले तो ये कि डेस्क पर या फील्ड में. अगर फील्ड में तो किस बीट या क्षेत्र में दिलचस्पी है. हो सकता है आप में से कुछ के पास इसका जवाब न हो, लेकिन अगर है तो इंटरव्यू में बताना न भूलें. अगर डेस्क देखना है तो बिजनेस, स्पोर्टस, एंटरटेनमेंट या जेनरल न्यूज.

हर क्षेत्र में दिलचस्पी है कहने का एक मतलब ये भी निकाला जा सकता है कि किसी में भी दिलचस्पी नहीं है. ये महज शौक है. जमाना स्पेशलाइजेशन का है, इसलिए अपनी पसंदीदा बीट बता दें. अगर स्पोर्ट्स अच्छा लगता है तो बता दें कि भविष्य में स्पोर्ट्स रिपोर्टर बनना चाहते हैं. इससे फायदा ये होगा कि इंटरव्यूअर को आप अपने पाले में ले आएंगे. फिर वो आपसे स्पोर्ट्स के सवाल बरसा देंगे. ध्यान रहे, पसंदीदा फील्ड बताने के बाद आप पीछे नहीं हट सकते इसलिए पसंद जाहिर करने से पहले खुद को नाप-तौल लें. पूरी गहराई से पढ़ कर जाएं. पढ़ने का कोई विकल्प नहीं है.

पूरा का पूरा इंटरव्यू आपकी जागरूकता और जिज्ञासा खंगालेगा. देश-दुनिया, राजनीति, इकोनॉमी, खेल और लोकल खबरों को ध्यान से पढ़ें और घटना-घटनाक्रम याद रखें. ग्रैजुएशन मास कॉम में है तो जर्नलिज्म के बेसिक सवाल भी पूछे जा सकते हैं. किसी अन्य सब्जेक्ट से ग्रैजुएट हैं तो उसकी भी जानकारी होनी चाहिए. हॉबी से जुड़े सवालों के जवाब संक्षिप्त रखें.

इन सबके ऊपर. पूरे इंटरव्यू में सही मात्रा में कॉन्फिडेंस बनाए रखें. आपकी विचारधारा कोई भी हो उसे लॉजिकली जस्टिफाई करें. जवाब ईमानदार होने चाहिए. साक्षात्कारकर्ता को सवाल पूरा करने दें. पहले जवाब दिया तो दिग्गजों को हर्ट होगा ना दोस्त. कोई जवाब नहीं आए तो सॉरी बोलने में देरी न करें. चिल रहिए, बढ़िया सीवी बनाइएं, पूरे इंटरव्यू में कोशिश करिए कि सवाल आपकी दिलचस्पी से जुड़े हों. इंटरव्यूअर को बार-बार अपने पाले में लाइए. वेल ड्रेस होकर इंट्री और बढ़िया स्माइल के साथ थैंक्यू बोलकर एग्जिट. बस फिर क्या है. आईआईएमसी आपको वेलकम करेगा.

Fold Your Sleeves And Relax !

Yes you read it right. IIMC written is over. Half the job completed, so why to worry. It's just an interview, isn't it? If you are thinking there will be a 'hidden' meaning in my message, not to panic because there is one!

Confused or surprised after reading it all. Well that's what the interviews are all about. Jury throw surprises and try to put you off the pedal. They want to know whether you are amazing in self contradicting yourself or have crystal clear clarity of thoughts (and actions).

If I just rotate the clock one year back, I can tell you why 'fold your sleeves' is such a standout title for this message. I was part of one of the most dramatic interviews ever conducted in IIMC history.

It was second day of four days long interview session. I was dressed in formals - trousers & cool blue shirt. People around me were flipping through newspapers and were trying to get grip of every event, especially Uttarkhand flood disaster. I on the other hand was pretty relaxed and chatted around with few people (actually I made friends).

Since it was hot that day, I folded my sleeves. In the meantime, my name was called out. Outside the room, while I was waiting I pacified few girls who were panicking. They asked me whether I have worked before & have appeared in these kind of interviews. I said no and they were now more nervous than before. Before I forget let me tell you all, the guy standing in front of me had even rolled up tie around his neck. The dress code pressure on me had mounted and I was completely unaware of this.

My chance came, five panelists were present and it was past twelve. I greeted them afternoon and before I could ask for seat, the lady panelist retorted, "Is this the way to come for an interview with your sleeves folded? I smiled and glanced at everyone. I did not take the seat because I was yet not permitted but I also did not unfold my shirt (I will give you the reason why) but not now. I answered all the questions but I wasn't allowed to finish my answers. I had no qualms, I was all smile. My photo was clicked by one of the panelists, I was still unruffled. When results came out, my name was up there in first list.

To cut the long story short, what I did was pretty simply -

I was cool and calm before, during and after interview. I came with a thought process of enjoying the moment. I had nothing to lose, this mantra gave me strength.
The way I was welcomed, I knew it is going to be a 'stress interview'. I didn't back out rather I seeked fun in it.
I was honest with my words and answers. Since I was enjoying it all, it showed on my face.
I was not deeply immersed in newspaper that day because regular news update should be a habit, not a one day feed. Instead I interacted with people and learnt about their experiences and background. You learn from people. Mass Communication is all about people, don't forget.
And lastly, I did not unfold my shirt because I wasn't asked to! (If you read the above statement, it was a mere remark by lady panelist not an instruction). Secondly, I stuck to my decision. There is always something beyond the cover of any book. I knew they will read and enjoy it, which they did.

So be who you are, don't be a rebel but back your decisions. And you'll crack it with your folded sleeves and curved smile.

Let Not Pressure Get The Better Of You

Currently, she is working as a communications manager in an NGO and is a freelance journalist cum fashion and sports blogger.

First things first – many congratulations on cracking the entrance test and making it till this stage of the selection process! Now, be rest assured that if you have made it till here, the ultimate goal of studying at IIMC is definitely within sight!

To surpass the interview and the piece to camera rounds, what you need is 70% mental preparation and 30% factual accuracy. They have already tested the knowledge that they wanted to; now they want to know how clear and stable you are about your views.

Point number one: DO NOT buckle under pressure. The panel will try to create a very stressful situation for you (much like the newsroom), where they might totally dismiss your views or put forward extreme counter-arguments. Be clear with your thoughts and be very vocal about why you are taking a certain stand. It’s not necessary to agree with them. What is absolutely necessary is clarity of thoughts and strength of character to stand by your opinion on a certain matter. At IIMC, it’s absolutely okay to be opinionated, as long as you have valid reasons to add strength to your opinions. Be calm, be confident and be sure of what you’re speaking.

Moving to the theory bit – what personally helped me the most were the primetime debates on news channels. Watching them every day without fail greatly increased my perspective and helped me visualize prospective angles on every story that is developing within the country. Having your own stand is good; knowing the other person’s stand is even better. Watching these debates also provokes thoughts within you, which you wouldn’t have anticipated by just going through news websites or news papers. Since you’re applying for TV, it’s always better to show allegiance and familiarity to that medium!

The piece-to-camera round was something that was relatively new to me, since my graduation was in business studies. I wouldn’t deny that the entire studio and camera setup can be a bit overwhelming, but don’t let it get the better of you. All you need for this round is composure, composure and more composure. Typically, you will be given a topic at the end of your interview to speak on for 30 seconds. Normally, they give you something that is related to your interests and forte, but that’s never a compulsion. Make a mental note of the points that you have to make. Do not try to frame sentences mentally and mug them up – that is something that will never work. But if you’re clear about the points that you will address, you should surpass this round without a glitch.

All in all – relax, have faith in your ability and let that confidence reflect on your face!

पूछा वही जाएगा जो आप चाहते हैं

अनुग्रह मिश्रा 2012-13 बैच में हिन्दी पत्रकारिता विभाग के छात्र रहे हैं. फिलहाल राज्यसभा टीवी में कार्यरत हैं. आप इनसे टीवी की चर्चाओं में बतौर दर्शक शामिल होने के लिए भी संपर्क कर सकते हैं.

सबसे पहले आप लोगों को ढेर सारी बधाई दूंगा. सब दे रहे हैं इसलिए नहीं बल्कि इसलिए क्योंकि आप इसके ह़कदार हैं. खुशी होती है जब आप देश के सबसे प्रतिष्ठित मीडिया संस्थान की प्रवेश परीक्षा को पास कर लेते हैं. उस खुशी को बरक़रार रखने की ज़रूरत है और थोड़ा धैर्य रखने की भी क्योंकि आने वाला वक़्त आपका है.

आप लिखित परीक्षा पास कर चुके हैं इससे ज़ाहिर है कि आप कुछ अलग सोच रखते हैं. अब बारी है कि आप ख़ुद को कैसे पेश करते हैं. थोड़ा सा डर ज़रूर लग सकता है लेकिन याद रखना डर के आगे जीत है. इंटरव्यू से घबराने की ज़रूरत क़तई नहीं हैं लेकिन उसे हल्के में लेना भी बेवकूफी होगी.

ध्यान रहे आप से वही पूछा जाने वाला है जो आप चाहते हैं लेकिन आप उसका जवाब कितनी साफगोई से दे पाते हैं ये ज्यादा मायने रखता है. बायोडाटा में जो चिपका रखा है उसे फिर से रिमाइंड कर लें क्योंकि सवाल आपके उस बायोडाटा और आपकी रुचि के अनुसार ही दागे जाने हैं.

सवालों का जवाब देते हड़बड़ी न दिखाएं नहीं तो अपनी बात से भटक कर जवाब आते हुए भी नहीं दे पाएंगे. बाकी आपके जवाबों से ही काउंटर प्रश्न पूछे जा सकते हैं, उसके लिए भी तैयार रहें.

आप कहां से हैं और वो जगह किस बात के लिए जानी जाती है इसका जवाब आपको न हम दे पाएंगे और न ही गूगल बाबा. आप को ये मालूम होना चाहिए. वहां की राजनीति, वहां की समस्याओं से आपका रूबरू होना ज़रूरी है. आप का एजुकेशन बैकग्राउंड अगर साइंस या कॉमर्स है तो चेंज ऑफ ट्रैक के सवाल भी हो सकते हैं. फील्ड ऑफ इन्ट्रेस्ट पर भी ज्ञान देने के लिए तैयार होकर जाएं.

देश-दुनिया में जो हो रहा है उसकी जानकारी होनी चाहिए. आप इराक़ और भारत-चीन रिश्तों के विशेषज्ञ भले ही न हों लेकिन आपको ये पता होना चाहिए कि भारत के उप-राष्ट्रपति फिलहाल किस देश के दौरे पर हैं.

क्योंकि आपका रुझान खेल की खबरों में है इसलिए आपको बाज़ार में रुपए की उछाल के बारे में नहीं पता है ये तर्क मुश्किल पैदा कर सकता है. कम से कम तमाम बड़े विषयों पर आपके पास एक सामान्य जानकारी ज़रूरी है भले आप किसी भी मुद्दे पर विषेशज्ञ न हों.

सवालों में आपकी विचारधारा, राजनीतिक रुचि के बारे में सीधे तौर पर नहीं पूछा जाएगा लेकिन आपके जवाब में वो झलक सकती है फिर भी उसकी चिंता न करें. किसी की अंधभक्ति से बचें और किसी मसले के तमाम पहलुओं पर ग़ौर करने के बाद ही उसकी विवेचना करें.

बाकी पत्रकारिता क्रांति लाने के लिए करना चाहते हैं, देश बदलने के लिए करना चाहते हैं- जैसे जवाब देने से बचना चाहिए. सामने बैठे लोग ऐसे जवाब पर आपको घेर सकते हैं. मीडिया के मालिकों और पूंजी के हित तक बात जा सकती है. इसके बदले आप लेखन और समसामयिक विषयों में रुचि जैसी बातों का सहारा ले सकते हैं और मानते हैं कि इसे पेशेवर तौर पर अपनाना आपके लिए बेहतर करियर विकल्प है.

तो अब आप चलें इंटरव्यू के लिए और हां थोड़ा सा ठीक से पहन-वहन के जाएं. इंटरव्यू हॉल में आपकी ही तरह अपनी बारी का इंतजार कर रहे साथियों से हाय-हलो करके खुद को सहज रखना अच्छा रहेगा.

Confidence Is The Key

Megha Prasad is currently working as Bureau Chief, Mumbai at Times Now. A 2003-04 IIMC batch pass out (English Journalism), she was awarded the Hindu Scholarship for scoring the highest in all the three journalism courses. Megha started her career with Indian express newspaper, from where she made a switch to television in August, 2005. Since then she has been a part of Times Now.

Congratulations to you all for having cleared the written examination of IIMC and wishing you the very best of luck for GD and PI.

Let me begin by saying that all the hard work that I am sure all of you are putting in for the preparation will be every bit worth it if you manage to secure a place for yourself in the Indian institute of mass communication.

For me, it was perhaps one of the best things that could have happened and the one year spent in the IIMC campus was by far one of the most memorable phases in my life. IIMC is truly learning with fun.

GD and PI will be smooth sailing if you have the right attitude. Go in with confidence but also armed with facts and an analyzing mind. I don’t mean to say that you need to know everything under the sun, but you will be expected to have an adequate knowledge about the current happenings, so keep yourself abreast. Also do not forget to do a bit of reading on the latest controversial issues, as in the group discussions often such topic are thrown at you that have shades of grey and can be both defended and criticized. So if a situation like that arises, carefully choose the side you are on, and make your point well, be ready to be challenged, hence work on your counters as well.

Personal interview is about everything that you do in that 10 or 15 minutes, from how you walk to how you talk. First things first, be presentable, dress smartly. Go in with loads of confidence but don't be overconfident and don't act too smart with 'all knowing' attitude.

Be very alert, know that you are being watched and being judged by each of interviewers sitting across the table, every minute. If you don't know the right answers, be honest and tell them that you are not aware, though say it with a pinch of humility. But if you know the answers, grab the opportunity and impress them, all you need is to be confident, clear and concise. And the deal will be sealed.

माधव शर्मा | 2012-13 आरटीवी का सेशन शुरू होने के ठीक 18 दिन बाद पहुंचे और प्रो. राघवाचारी की छोटी वाली डांट खाई. इससे पहले राजस्थान यूनिवर्सिटी से बी.कॉम किया. आज से ठीक एक साल, एक महीने और छह दिन पहले कैंपस प्लेसमेंट के जरिए राजस्थान पत्रिका जयपुर पहुंचे. अभी तक यहीं हैं. जानकारियों का अभाव था लेकिन पत्रकार बनने का जुनून आईआईएमसी तक ले आया. सीख रहे हैं और बढ़ भी रहे हैं. सफ़र जारी है.

बारिश का मौसम था. शाम के वक्त ठंडी हवा चल रही थी. हमारा नया-नया घर बना था. वो भी पूरा नहीं. सिर्फ तीन कमरे, किचन और लेट-बाथ. सीढ़ियां भी नहीं बनी थीं इसलिए टेम्परॉरी लकड़ी की सीढ़ी लगवाई गई थी छत पर जाने के लिए. छत पर जाने का मन हुआ, लकड़ी की सीढ़ी से चढ़ रहा था, ऊपर पहुंचने ही वाला था कि नीचे धौलपुरी लाल और सफेद पत्थर के डिजायन किए हुए फर्श पर आ गिरा. गिरते-गिरते कुछ बैलेंस बना और खुद को ज्य़ादा चोट लगने से बचा लिया. सिर्फ हल्की पट्टी वाली चोट आई. दूसरे दिन फिर उसी लकड़ी की सीढ़ी से छत तक पहुंचा. ठंडी हवा ने पिछले दिन में ले जाकर छोड़ दिया. वाकये को याद किया तो अपनी मूखर्ता पर हंसी आई. मैंने सीढ़ी की लास्ट लकड़ी पर पैर रखने की बजाय सीधे छत पर पैर जमाने की कोशिश की थी और अंजाम ऊपर लिख ही दिया है.

इस सच्ची कथा का ताल्लुक उन सभी से है जिन्होंने हाल ही में आईआईएमसी का इंट्रेंस फाइट कर लिया है. अगर आपके लिए वो छत आईआईएमसी है तो इंटरव्यू वो लकड़ी की अंतिम सीढ़ी है. संभलकर चढ़ोगे तो छत तक पहुंच जाओगे, जल्दबाजी और ओवरकॉन्फिडेंस मेरा जैसा हाल कर सकती है.

तैयारी कैसे करनी है इस पर कई बड़े और छोटे साथियों ने (आईआईएमसी के लिहाज से) काफी कुछ बता दिया है. कुछ ज्यादा नहीं है मेरे पास. जिस दिन भी इंटरव्यू हो, आराम से जाइएगा. जो मन में आए पहनिएगा. जरूरी नहीं कि फॉर्मल पहनें, पुरानी जींस भी चलेगी, पर सलीके से पहनी और धुली हुई (लड़कियों पर भी अप्लाई). जेब में पेन भी लगा लीजिएगा, पत्रकार वाला फील आता है. जैसा शुभम ने लिखा था कि जो भी बोलें, पूरे आत्मविश्वास और तब ही बोलें जब विषय की पूरी जानकारी हो.

जिस कमरे में आपको बिठाया जाएगा, कोई क्लास रूम ही होगा, पक्का. तब दो मिनट सोचना कि आपने पहली बार पत्रकार बनने के बारे में कब सोचा था और कब लगा कि आप पत्रकार ही बनेंगे? सोचना, क्यों बी.कॉम, बीटेक और बीए के बाद पत्रकारिता में आ रहे हैं? जेठ की दोपहरी में दिल्ली आने-जाने के लिए उस पसीने को याद करना जो आपने बस और रेल की टिकट लेने के लिए लंबी लाइन में बहाया. आपके पिठ्ठू बैग की किसी जेब में वो टिकट्स उस समय भी होंगी जब आप इंटरव्यू के लिए किसी कमरे में बैंठे होंगे. उस पल को याद करना जब आप परीक्षा देने घर से रवाना हो रहे थे और मां ने पापा से चुराकर पांच सौ रुपए आपको दिए और कहा कि गर्मी बहुत है, पानी-बानी पीते रहना. दावे से कह सकता हूं कि ये सब आपके आईआईएमसी में आने और आपके देखे सपने को थोड़ी मजबूती देंगे. थोड़ा पानी पीना और बुलावा आते ही कुछ सैंकंड के उस रास्ते में ही रिवाइंड कर लेना कि आज की हेडलाइंस क्या हैं?

वो आपको, अपने बारे में बताएं, कह कर छोड़ देंगे. अब आप तय करेंगे कि खुद का इंटरव्यू कितनी देर चलाना है. लेकिन जो भी बताएं साफ और जानकारी से भरा हो.

आप आइए. ये लाल इमारत आपका दिल खोल कर इस्तकबाल करेगी. पत्रकारिता से ज्यादा ज़िंदगी और लोगों को देखने-समझने का नजरिया देगी. आने वाले 9 महीने आपकी ज़िंदगी के खूबसूरत वक्त में से होगा. यकीन न हो तो आप आकर और जी कर देख लें. अभी आप पढ़िए-लिखिए. इस बार जो साथी जाएं उन्हें अगले साल के लिए अभी से शुभकामना. बस थोड़ा मंथन करिएगा कि इस बार क्या कमी रह गई?

Just like how a diamond is worthless until it is polished, intelligence is worthless if it is not put to good use. You have used your intelligence to shine like a diamond. Congratulations for passing the entrance exam.

I was a student of English journalism, 2013-14 batch of IIMC New Delhi. I am sure after clearing the written test all of you must be ebullient as well as highly strung about PI.

Things that you should keep in mind before Personal Interview

While preparing for the IIMC interview, you need to be very sure why you want to be a journalist. Interviewers can ask you: Why journalism? Why IIMC? Why English journalism? Why not advertising and PR? Have you applied for another course in IIMC? Have you applied elsewhere? What do you like writing on? What are you interested in? Which city are you from? Tell us about your city? Have you worked before? If yes, where?
Keep in mind that your interview is a 'personality test' and not intelligence test; you have to define your personality in front of them.
Be in a good mood and maintain a smile throughout the interview. Be enthusiastic without being hyper.
Have positive views in your mind: Go for the interview with a positive mindset. Usually, it happens that negative thoughts would start coming to your mind. Especially, to those who are giving interview for the first time, So be positive and think right.
It takes more courage to listen than to speak: You must listen to the interviewer before you answer anything. It is good to listen completely and then answer rather interrupting when they are speaking.
Show confidence and talk to them, not at them: You should always look into their eyes and then talk. Do not look down or elsewhere and answer. If do then they might think you do not have self-confidence.
If you have any previous published work with you, please do present them in front of the interviewers as it displays your passion for the field.
Even if you don't have answers for all the queries, you should not agonize because one cannot know about each and everything that is happening around us.
Do not sound supercilious: There is a strong chance that if you are a fervent candidate you will have strong views about few things, make sure you do not carry your preconceived notion to the interview hall.

These are the few things that you should keep in mind before entering the interview room.

Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained.

पढ़कर जाओगे तो इंटरव्यू में भौकाल सेट रहेगा

विकास त्रिवेदी | हिंदी पत्रकारिता विभाग में 2012-13 बैच में आए थे. इस समय इतना ही काफी है. बाकी नाम बनाने के लिए विकास कार्य प्रगति पर है.

शाबास. मुबारक हो. तुम अच्छा लिख लेते हो यार. अच्छा ना लिखा होता तो ये पढ़ ना रहे होते. इंटरव्यू कब है. कभी भी हो अब काहे का डर. आईआईएमसी में 75 फीसदी तो घुस ही गए हो. बस अब खाली तीन-चार दिग्गजों को अपनी प्रतिभा से चमकाना बाकी है.

अच्छा एक बात बताइए, डर लग रहा है क्या. अगर हां तो अच्छी बात है. इंटरव्यू से पहले डरना जरूरी है. डरने से कामचोरी नहीं आती और दिमाग दौड़ता रहता है. इंटरव्यू भेदने के लिए दिमाग का दौड़ना बेहद जरूरी है. बस इस डर को सिर्फ तैयारी करने तक ही रखिएगा. जिस दिन इंटरव्यू देने जा रहे हों उस दिन डर को शीशे में शक्ल देखने के साथ ही घर छोड़कर आइएगा.

आईआईएमसी में भी इंटरव्यू इंसान ही लेते हैं बस इसे ध्यान में रखिएगा. अब बात कि काका अंदर बोलेंगे क्या ? हां तो उसके लिए भी ज्यादा लोड लेने की जरूरत नहीं है. 4-5 महीने से तो अखबार कुछ ज्यादा ही चाट रहे होंगे. देश-दुनिया की बड़ी घटनाएं आपको पता ही होंगी. नहीं हैं तो पता कीजिए.

सबसे महत्वपूर्ण आपकी सीवी है. उसमे अब तक जो उपलब्धियां और कर्म दर्ज हैं, मसलन कहां के हैं, किन विषयों में क्या पढ़ाई की है. किस-किस को पढ़ा है और क्या-क्या पढ़ा है. जिस अखबार को ज्यादा पढ़ते हैं उसका एडिटर कौन है. लोकसभा चुनाव, इराक, अमेरिका, मोदी, केजरीवाल, कांग्रेस, तेलंगाना, कश्मीर, भारत-पाक, ISIS, यूक्रेन, मनमोहन सिंह, नए मंत्री, बिहार, गुजरात विकास, अवार्डस, मोहसिन शेख, सोशल मीडिया, रेप और यूपी. इन सभी को 10 के पहाड़े की तरह माथे में उतारकर इंटरव्यू वाले कमरे में प्रवेश करिएगा तो ज्यादा मगजमारी नहीं करनी पड़ेगी. इंटरव्यू वाले दिन के अखबार की लीड, एंकर, संपादकीय पढ़ेंगे तो अच्छा रहेगा.

अगर इंटरव्यू में इससे बचने का कोई मारक उपाय आपके दिमाग में आया हो तो ट्राई न करें. बोर्ड में लोग एवैई नहीं बैठे हैं. इसके अलावा अपनी कुंडली के सारे ग्रह पता होने चाहिए. जैसे किस इलाके के हो, सांसद, विधायक, नेता, अभिनेता, खिलाड़ी, साहित्यकार, कोई अवार्ड विजेता अगर उधर से है तो कौन है, सब ज्ञान हो तो इंटरव्यू में भौकाल सेट करने में आसानी रहेगी. हाल फिलहाल में देखी गई फिल्म की पूरी राम कथा जान लीजिएगा. मूड मस्त रखिएगा. एकदम बिंदास.

अब बात जरा लुक-शुक की. मिथुन लुक में जाने का कष्ट न करें वरना कैंडी क्रश की तरह किसी से लाइफ मांगनी पड़ेगी. शरीफ से बनकर जाइएगा. लगे कि पत्रकार जैसा कुछ बनना चाहते हैं. वैसे ध्यान रहे कि ज्ञान आपको उस लाल दरवाजे में इंट्री दिलवाएगा ना कि फॉर्मल कपड़े और चमड़े वाले काले जूते.

दबाकर घूरते हुए, आंखों में आंखें डालकर जवाब दीजिएगा (ऐसा ना लगे कि दुश्मन को देख रहे हैं). एक बात और यार, प्लीज़ झूठ मत बोलना. हमेशा अपनी कमी हंसते हुए स्वीकार करनी चाहिए. इस विश्वास के साथ कि ये अब लाइफ में रिपीट नहीं होगी. पत्रकार क्यों बनना चाहते हो, ये सवाल तो पक्का होगा. प्लेसमेंट तक के लिए एक ढंग का जवाब सोच लीजिएगा. जवाब पूछने वाले के हिसाब से बदला भी जा सकता है. शर्तें लागू.

बस तो क्या है. लिखित परीक्षा तो क्वालीफाई कर ही ली है. इसी विश्वास के साथ घुस जाइए इंटरव्यू रूम में. उम्मीद और दुआ है कि अगर आप में लगन और क्षमता है तो जल्दी ही आईआईएमसी में मुलाकात हो. जब मुलाकात हो तो सर ना बोलना. बुजुर्ग टाइप का फील होता है. तब तक के लिए गुड लक फ्यूचर आईआईएमसिएन. आईआईएमसी आपका हो.

Shashank Rawat is of the AD/PR department of the 2011-12 batch. He is a BBA Graduate from I.P. University, Delhi and aspired to be a copywriter before entering into IIMC. He follows the theory of being a ‘jack of all trades and master of one’ and believes that learning is not just confined to books and classrooms which in turn made him into an avid traveller and student of human cultures. He has changed many avenues after leaving IIMC like copywriting, events, activations, entrepreneurship and even wedding planning. He is currently working as an Account Planner in Grey Worldwide apart from pursuing his hobbies of reading, writing, character mimicking & film making.

It’s been around 3 years when I entered the IIMC campus to give my GD / PI and coming from a non-media background it was quite natural for me to be surrounded by doubts and questions about my entrance interviews.

Questions like do I know the industry well which I am aspiring to get into, do I know much about my favourite creative writer, what if they ask me about brand taglines etc. used to continuously hover my mind like American drones.

So in order to look for these answers and look like an aspirer of the “Media industry”, I started swallowing information from websites, magazines, newspapers and what not.

My quest for absolute information and my ambition to become the advertising encyclopaedia had taken me so far that I even knew the postal addresses of advertising agencies.(yeah, that’s true)

So with my ‘Gyaan kiPotli’ inside my head I entered the G.D. room and within a few minutes the truth dawned on me.IIMC was not looking for data about advertising inside my head but my perspectives on the discussed data.

As a candidate, please remember that your point of view carries more weightage than objective data andtopics of the group discussion will revolve around issues, movements, culture & trends of people in India & around the world which will require you to put your opinions forward.

Most importantly don’t hesitate & judge your perspective before putting it on table& try not to get into an altercation with your group members (easier said than done) but into a healthy debate.

Now coming to the P.I... It can be gruesome and intimidating for some and extremely fun for others but remember whichever format you get don’t take it lightly, because no matter how you feel you will be evaluated on your reactions,responses and your behaviour.

For instance my interview started with the fact that my graduation college had serious branding problems and I should do something about it (which I couldn’t as much as I wanted it to) and then shifted to a test of my writing skills and my decision to choose advertising and changing my career.

Do take your ideas and work along with you and focus more on the granularity of your ideas and less on the style of presentation.

Also remember that nobody would mind if you run, jump, dance, sing and act as long as the interviewer can see the passion towards your work and idea. Saying that I would also you urge to not fake yourself because believe me that won’t help at all.
