Habib Sulemani's struggle for justice in militarized Pakistan

JOURNALIST and creative writer Habib R. Sulemani is locked inside his home in Pakistan’s garrison city, Rawalpindi, for over 21 months. He is living in solitary confinement after three attempts on his life in 2010.

In September 2011, when The Terrorland published an article, Poetry turns into reality: war crimes case against Pakistan general, which annoyed the military establishment and the Inter-Services Intelligence sent trained target-killers, provided by its ally the Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), to his house but fortunately he escaped the intended attack.

“The agencies also tried to use some women, friends and people from the neighborhood in another engineered attempt... but they failed,” said a source, adding that critical posts of The Terrorland had upset Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and he was annoyed at Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt-Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha and Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) chief Maj-Gen. Athar Abbas for not being able to deal with a blogger.

Regular visitors of this group blog know how some colleagues at the Dawn Media Group’s Islamabad offices reportedly stole the manuscript (soft copy) of Habib Sulemani's novel, The Terrorland, which Resident Editor Zaffar Abbas provided to his powerful brother and chief military spokesman, Maj-Gen Athar Abbas. Thus it reached the top brass of the military.

According to sources, the military establishment declared Mr. Sulemani’s written words a "toxic attack on Pakistan's ideological frontiers.” Before any action, the decision-makers made their minds to check and double-check the low-profile journalist’s unpublished literary works. Thus the ISI with the help of the Military Intelligence (MI) stole Mr. Sulemani's entire data from his home computer, through "specially employed" persons.

A plan was made to give the journalist an "exemplary punishment" for his unpublished creative writings so that no one in future dares to write about the hidden face of the army generals in the country. Talking about the military is forbidden in the militarized Islamic Republic of Pakistan. So, besides his colleagues, some friends and relatives were also made part of a cruel mass murder plot. “Some of the intriguers said ‘yes’ at gunpoint others were given lucrative offers to make them part of the ruthless murder plot.”

Besides bugging and hacking Mr. Sulemani’s phones and emails, the ISI special Cell at Dawn Islamabad – allegedly headed by Baqir Sajjad – recorded his fearless intellectual discussions on “taboo subjects” at the office and on the way to home in the official vehicle of the newspaper. “Habib’s views on Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan had really enraged a very influential group of colleagues from Kashmir,” said a source at Dawn during background interviews. “Colleagues would record his opinions, without bringing it to his knowledge, and provide the tape to the News Editor (Farman Ali) and edition-in-charges (Adeel Raza and Rehan Yoususf) who would provide it to the Resident Editor (Zaffar Abbas), and it would reach the military-men.

“After declaring him (Habib Sulemani) a traitor, liable to death, he was systematically isolated at office and in the journalistic community—the Abbas Brothers used their network besides the secret agencies.”

The spy agencies reportedly took months to contact, interview and take into confidence Mr. Sulemani’s relatives, friends and all those who had interacted with him at some point in life. "Some of them were harassed others were brainwashed—that Mr. Sulemani was a westernized mind who was very negative about the very foundations of Pakistan—playing in the hands of enemies of the country, and that intellectually he was a security risk! At this point some people agreed in an emotional patriotic way to get the most authentic license of patriotism from the ISI—thus the stage was set to punish an innocent writer along with his entire family members in a systematic ruthless way."

Sources said that the ISI, MI and ISPR made a foolproof mass murder plan. “It was finalized at the ISI headquarters (in Islamabad) and approved at the GHQ (General Headquarters of the Pakistan Army) in Rawalpindi.”

According to the approved plan, two teams of pawns were constituted: one at the Karakoram International University (KIU), in Gilgit, and the other at the offices of daily Dawn in Islamabad.

The KIU team (under the supervisions of two army officers – Major Amin of the ISI and Major Khushamadin of the MI) – made a honor-related case against a sister, Nasira Parveen, of the journalist. The plan was: being a respectable family in the tribal society, a case of honor will compel the girl to commit suicide or her brothers or relatives will kill her... in the next phase, there was application of psychological warfare to kill the elderly parents and other brothers and sisters due to 'depression' or similar pretext... the remaing members were to be killed and then declared the murder suicide!

Man proposes, God disposes... due to the bravery of Ms. Parveen and her elder sister, the criminal plan went wrong at the very first stage! Then Mr. Sulemani's journalistic sources worked and found the secret plot of the perpetrators—the plot was exposed in a miraculous way—so out of frustration, the Dawn team in Islamabad became operative—so there was the first direct attack on Habib Sulemani when he was returning home from office. They wanted to get rid of as the plot had been exposed by his sources. After the first attack, Mr. Sulemani stopped going office as he had been warned of further attacks. Then one after another, two more attempts were made on his life at home, which luckily failed.

When Mr. Suleamni contacted the police, they refused to register a case against the powerful accused. Then he sought protection from the government and Supreme Court of Pakistan, the secret agencies reportedly didn’t let them do anything. The representatives of rights bodies had either become an ally of the secret agencies or kept mum out of fear! When the government, on the insistence of the military establishment, tried to minimize concerns of people through propaganda, then The Terrorland group blog came into being to tell the brutal truth to the world.

“The powerful perpetrators had spread rumors in every direction through state machinery, social group, mainstream media and agents of the agencies. They were using psychological warfare tactics by isolating the innocent family in the entire country—but the blogs worked like miracle,” said a member of The Terrorland Team.

At this point, the military establishment tried its best to use the carrot-and-stick formula to silence Mr. Sulemani. In this regard he was contacted through certain relatives, lost friends, messengers, government and military officials, and journalists. Among those who contacted the family included Major Amin of the ISI, Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) secretory-general Shamsul Islam Naz, Dawn employees’ union president Bakhtawar Mian, Mehboob-ur-Rehman Tanoli from the Express TV and an official of the KIU.

Some messengers tried to take Mr. Sulemani out of his home... from where the agencies were supposed to attack or kidnap him; but according to the advice of friends, he refused to step outside his home without any guarantee of security from the government.

"The military establishment along its political face (MQM) is determined to take revenge for whatever The Terrorland has published and spread through the social media," said an official on request of anonymity.

To cut a long story short, one day Dawn's senior reporter Khaleeq Kiani – according to a former Editor, he is media vanguard of the military establishment's business conglomerates – went to meet Mr. Sulemani at his home. He urged him to drop the names of two colleagues from the list of accused: Resident Editor Zaffar Abbas and Staff Reporter Amir Wasim. When Mr. Sulemani refused, Mr. Kiani left with a veiled threat!

Then, sources claim, on the direction of the Pakistan military establishment, Dawn Media Group owners sent two highest officials of the management to negotiate with Mr. Sulemani at his home. Tahir Owais (Senior General Manager whose name appeared in the print-line of daily Dawn Islamabad as Printer and Publisher) and Khurshid Aizid (Manager Human Resources Dawn Group Karachi) visited Mr. Sulemani at his home with lucrative offers to avoid legal action against the accused, saying that the secret agencies and their agents were above the law in Pakistan, and any legal battle against them would be useless.

Dawn management offered Mr. Sulemani to work anywhere for the newspaper if he didn’t want to go back to the Islamabad offices. However, when he sought protection from the ISI and MI, the visiting managers just excused. When Mr. Sulemani sought legal action against the accused being sheltered at Dawn, the newspaper management didn't respond positively either.

In the meantime Zaffar Abbas was hesitating to publish his names as editor in the print-line of the newspaper although he had kicked off his boss and respected journalist Abbas Nasir. Then another era of backdoor dialogue started! However, Mr. Sulemani made it clear that his case was a test of the justice system in Pakistan so he would keep demanding legal action against the accused nothing else.

“After losing the game at this level as well,” an insider said, “in November 2010, the Dawn administration sent a reluctant letter to Mr. Sulemani, which is a classic sample of intellectual dishonesty at the newspaper of Muhammad Ali Jinnah (the founder of Pakistan and Dawn).”

The above letter is an authentic document for historians to scrutinize the criminal media culture in today's Pakistan, and its role in the menace of global terrorism. Analysts and legal experts say the letter exposes the hidden and unbelievable face of Dawn – the so-called most respected newspaper of Pakistan.

First of all congratulations for getting promotion. I received your letter (No. SM(HR)/PHPL/XII/(i)/10/6237, written on November 4, 2010 and posted four days later). I am in shock! I phoned Mr. Tahir Owais, Sr. General Manager/Publisher daily Dawn Islamabad, but he was not available. You along with Mr. Owais visited me at my home in Rawalpindi on June 23, 2010 regarding the three attempts on my life and the threats to my family members and my own life. During the about one-hour meeting, I had informed you about the details of the criminal attacks this year and atrocities at workplace since 2005.

Earlier, in the last week of May, we had a telephonic conversation and according to your advice, I had written my demands in an email, sent to you on June 1, 2010. I had also written an email to Editor Dawn Abbas Nasir on April 4, 2010.

And now in this letter from your desk – full of lies, factual and technical errors – has taken me aback. You are claiming that I am absent from office without intimation. Do you really have some professional credibility or you blindly follow the laws of those criminals who have taken this great organization of Mr. M.A. Jinnah hostage?

You are said to be a highly educated person and a practicing Muslim and these kinds of lies are against the teachings of Islam. They are also against the laws of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. What kind of a culture is this at the Dawn Trust?

I am a sincere professional journalist, and I have sacrificed a lot during the last five years for the reputation of Dawn. Still I am silent about the documented atrocities of the criminal editorial administration of this newspaper.

It is my sincere advice to you: please, take this notice back as soon as possible. And release my salary which you had stopped illegally since June 2010. You have put my life in danger and I am continuously receiving threats. I can’t go to the doctor even as my blood pressure often shoots up. I am locked inside my home for over seven months, instead of providing me help and protection under the laws as an employee you want to give me additional torture. I can’t afford any further torture.

Mr. Sulemani's email, according to insiders, embarrassed the owners of Dawn Media Group. There was a "big tension" between CEO Hameed Haroon and current Editor Dawn Zaffar Abbas... but the former bowed down due to pressure from the military establishment.

After consultations with a former judge and lawyer, the Dawn management sent another letter to Mr. Sulemani, which, according to legal experts, is actually a "confession of their crime." A senior journalist said: "It shows that the Dawn Management is unable to take any action against the Zaffar Abbas and his cronies who have hijacked the Newspaper of the Founding Father."

Here is the letter:

Instead of sending this letter to Mr. Sulemani, the management of Dawn should have sacked the accused officials. "At least they (accused employees) could have been suspended and an in-house investigation should have initiated against them if not a formal police report. But the management proved its cowardice and let the innocent employee to fight on its own," says a former office-bearer of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists.

Besides refusal of the Dawn management, the local police also refused to register a case against the powerful accused while the federal government and Supreme Court of Pakistan are still silent despite written requests for protection and provision of justice.

Who are the accused

Pakistan Army chief Gen. Kayani, ISI chief Lt-Gen. Shuja Pasha, ISPR chief Maj-Gen. Athar Abbas, Major Amin (ISI) and Major Khushamadin (MI) along with the aforementioned teams, played main role in the alleged plot.

Here are brief biographical notes about the less-known members of the two alleged teams.

Team A - Dawn Islamabad

Team A consists of the "most powerful and cunning" people who allegedly initiated the murder plot after failure in other ways to get rid of Mr. Sulemani, sources said. "Habib had become an intellectual challenge for the editorial admin at Dawn Islamabad. Whatever his colleagues did to him from 2005 to 2010 is sheer criminal and many journalists in Islamabad are witness to the character assassination campaigns against him," said a media-person.

Zaffar Abbas is allegedly ISI's most "deceptive and ruthless media-man" in Pakistan. He is the incumbent editor of Dawn newspaper and a member of the infamous Abbas Brothers, who reportedly run a secret network in and outside Pakistan as the think-tank of the MQM. "They consider themselves strength of the powerful military establishment in Pakistan," says a friend of Mr. Abbas.

Mr. Zaffar's elder brother, Maj-Gen. Athar Abbas, is leading the military's media war front. His other brothers are also in the media: Azhar Abbas is an executive at the Geo News TV while Mazhar Abbas has grabbed a higher position at the ARY News channel. Mr. Mazhar, according to a former office-bearer of the PFUJ, kept a bullet on his parked car and then interpreted it as a threat "thus he (Mazhar) succeeded in deceiving the CPJ (Committee to Protect Journalists) and got an award for his bravery."

Another journalist said: "General Athar would be member of the Parliament on MQM ticket. Do you understand the game?" Mr. Zaffar's wife runs a media-related NGO, known as Uks, in Islamabad, which was a part of the plot.

Farman Ali was the News Editor at Dawn Islamabad besides President of an ISI-funded NGO. Now he works for The Express Tribune in the capital. Sources claim that his education is just intermediate therefore he is often humiliated by his editors and colleagues. It is famous about him that he changes color 24 times a day... for some people he is a communist, for others he is a racist and sectarian bent of mind person. "He can do anything for a glass of wine," Afzal Butt, former president National Press Club Islamabad, had said once. He had accused Zaffar Abbas and Adeel Raza of an "attack" on one of his female relatives in Rawalpindi. "They want to humiliate me so that I leave Dawn and Zaffar's favorite boy (Adeel) takes my position," he had told a confidant when still at Dawn.

Adeel Raza is Edition-in-charge at Dawn Islamabad. He is the nephew of PFUJ president Pervez Shaukat, and is believed to replace him in the future as a 'leader' of journalists. He reportedly played main role in isolating Mr. Sulemani as a part of the systematic suffocation-death plan. He tried to use some of his neighbors as well...! Besides Dawn, he was working for an English weekly of Gilgit-Baltistan, which, he had tried to use in the criminal game. "Adeel was the person who contacted and told me that he (Habib) was against Shias," said a journalist who works in Islamabad. "I was shocked how he can be... but now I know why this dirty sectarian game was being played at that time. To be truthful, yet we can't speak the whole truth... you know I've a family to feed!"

Tariq Hassan is a subeditor at Dawn Islamabad who, according to one of his former colleagues in Karachi, was transferred to the federal capital for a special purpose: to make way for the MQM in the journalistic community of the twin cities. And he has done that very successfully.

"Today the National Press Club and PFUJ are under the direct control of Altaf Hussain. Even the Abbas Brothers, who had once suffered at the hands of the MQM, are now a part of the fascist and racist gang."

Mr. Tariq had been to jail for using patrol bombs during protests. Famous for his shenanigans, one of his former editors had told his successor: "Be careful of the snake, it can bite without realizing you!" He is allegedly leading the web of MQM informers in the federal capital area, a worker of Dawn disclosed. "Neither he can edit nor write a piece in English, but still he gets salary from Dawn, because he is a devoted worker of MQM."

Yasir Ali Mansuri left Dawn after the attacks on Mr. Sulemani and now works for the Voice of America (Urdu section) in Islamabad. He was a self-styled patriot and spokesman for the ISI and ISPR at the Dawn.

"He was a master hacker and used to get illegal access to anyone's tray, emails and social media accounts," said a former trainee at Dawn and current media-person. "All employees were terrified by him and his father (Anwar Mansuri) who silently stabbed many employees. I was not given a job because I had asked him (Yasir) a tough question... that how he had gotten the job at Dawn!"

However, no one knows how he garbed the job at the VOA despite being an accused in an ISI-conceived murder plot! "It's a trick to show their power: USA is even with us... you can't do anything!"

Amir Wasim is a reporter at Dawn Islamabad. He is known as an MQM activist in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad who has direct access to the MQM's British-passport-holder leader Altaf Hussain. He was allegedly involved in the killing of an anti-MQM political worker (belonging to the Haqqiqi group) in Rawalpindi about two years ago.

According to his colleagues, he is an integral part of the MQM leaders in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, and a bridge between the ISI and MQM. MQM parliamentarians especially Haider Rizvi, Baber Ghori and Wasim Ahmed. After a sectarian slur against Shia Muslims, his relations with Zaffar Abbas had become tensed... but the MQM made a peace agreement between the two known "opportunists" at Dawn Media Group.

Munawer Azeem is the crime reporter, known as criminal-reporter, at Dawn Islamabad. He is the nephew of Executive Editor Express Tribune M. Ziaddin. When Mr. Ziauddin was Resident Editor Dawn Islamabad, he gave Mr. Azeem a regular job at an alleged fake degree. Prior to journalism, he was working at a grocery shop in Karachi, said a reporter. "He can't write a copy without taking others help."

A previous post says: " Insiders say that M. Ziauddin became ready to publish the above given story (in favor of Zaffar Abbas) along with his own 'forced' comments about Zaffar Abbas for two reasons. 1) he got a call from someone more influential— 2) an ‘illiterate’ nephew of the editor of The Express Tribune, Munawar Azeem, is an employee of Dawn."

Chaudhry Ishaq is a photographer at Dawn Islamabad. "He can reveal everything about every colleague especially editors to get personal benefits," says a photographer.

He is a reportedly a member of a land-mafia especially the group at the National Press Club Islamabad, which is caretaker of the Media Town Rawalpindi.

He along his son allegedly got two plots and one has already been sold illegally. "He allotted his son a plot first then recruited him at Waqat TV as a photo-journalist to legalize the illegal plot." He is a character in A plot of land & the mass murder plot.

Rehan Yousuf works as edition-in-charge Dawn Metropolitan Peshawar, published from Islamabad. Before joining the organization, Adeel Raza had declared him a Taliban-like-his-friend-Ansar-Abbassi. He is said to be a member of the Jamaat-i-Islami but sympathizes with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. "He is a leading member of the ISI-brand jihadists at Dawn," said a leftist journo.

According to a reporter, Mr. Yousuf, said that Zaffar Abbas was responsible for the Lal (Red) Mosque massacre who "wrote articles as a result the Pakistan Army started the operation and killed countless innocent girl students who had been acting violently as a part of the ISI strategy to get global attention and dollars."

Zar Alam is a subeditor at Dawn Islamabad. Personally, he is believed to be a gentle man "but living in Rome means you have to do as the Romans do." According to a source, Farman Ali used him for his sinister purposes... and mobilized the Ismaili Shia Muslims according to the ISI-plot, saying that Mr. Sulemani was working against the Ismaili faith as well as the state. A previous post says:

"To be frank Mr. Farman Ali can cash even his dirt through his shenanigans," said a member of the NGO. "I've never seen such a visionless person in my entire life, and am surprised how the newspapers accommodate him... may be therefore our press is considered the most irresponsible in the world."

Anwar Mansuri is said to be the softer facade of the hardcore criminals at Dawn Islamabad (intellectual terrorists). After the attacks on Mr. Sulemani, when he exposed Mr. Mansuri along with his 'militarized' son, the senior journalist used his influence and shifted his son (Yasir Ali) to the VOA.

"He's expert in psychological attacks on reporters in the name of editing," said a reporter. "Sometimes he rewrites a copy and even the reporter can't understand the published stuff. It becomes embarrassing but Baba jee tas say mass nahi hota! His headlines often make great jokes in the journalist community!"

Team B - KIU Gilgit

The team at the Karakoram International University (KIU), in Gilgit, was just a "stupid group of puppets... who were doing as they were being ordered from Islamabad." Some of the accused had even requested to Mr. Sulemani and his family members to forgive them as they had become a part of the plot unwillingly... due to pressure from the top!

Here are members of this team: KIU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Najma Najam (first from left) is also working for the “psychological warfare cell” of the ISI; Registrar Dr. Ahsanullah Mir is a known as a Taliban commander on campus; Muhammad Hussain, Assistant Professor Manzoor Ali, Dr. Muhammad Ramzan, Karim Khan, Dr. Salma Durrani and Ms. Tahira did what they were ordered from the top. "If they had refused, their jobs even lives would have been in danger," a source on campus told The Terrorland Team during the background interview.

“ONE thing bothers me a lot. Being a female vice-chancellor, why Dr Najma Najam with Prof. Salma Durrani, her closest friend on campus, put my life in danger? I’m ashamed when I see them in the media advocating for the rights of women. I'm ashamed to call them women! Anybody can hire their services to destroy someone’s life or carrier. They’re evils on campus, and enemies of students and our education system,” said Ms. Parveen, who is illegally not being allowed to attend classes by the administration of the Karakoram International University for the last 22 months.

Mr. Sulemani said if something happened to him or any of his family member, then Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Army, ISI, ISPR and the London-based MQM leader Altaf Hussain would be responsible for it.

MQM leader & Sindh Minister hurls threat at 'The Terrorland'

A leader of the Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has hurled threat at The Terrorland. Some Karachi-based journalists have asked The Terrorland Team to take the words of MQM leader and Minister Youth Affairs Sindh, Faisal Sabzwari, seriously, as it was aimed at journalist Habib R. Sulemani.

“The MQM guys use the couplet (of Ghalib) to hurl threat to media-persons in Karachi in their 'civilized' way as the traditional tactics have changed with the changed times,” said a reporter.

The Urdu couplet of Mirza Ghalib, quoted by Mr. Sabzwari, simply means: God, he doesn’t understand me... neither he will try to... either change his heart... or give me another language to make him understand...!

The incident happened during a discussion at the Pakistani Press Google Group. A reporter of The Nation – Lahore-based daily newspaper allegedly run by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) – posted a piece about Faisal Qurashi – a journalist who had published a report about MQM’s London-based leader Altaf Hussain and got killed in Lahore.

The Terrorland published a series of posts about Altaf Hussain and his MQM's relations with the Pakistani military establishment especially the ISI, which has "really enraged the fascist party," said a source, adding that the "MQM leaders use the term Conspiracy Theorist for (Habib) Sulemani." Besides, the source added, the comment of an Admin of The Terrorland on the website of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has also enraged the MQM leaders in particular Altaf Hussain.

Anyway. here is the controversial part of the discussion. Ashraf Javed, Staff Reporter, The Nation, started the debate as he wrote:

It is learnt that police investigators in Lahore have arrested a man in connection with the cooled blooded murder of journalist Faisal Qurashi, brother of a senior UK-based journalist. The man has confessed to the police that he murdered Faisal over some personal grudge. Now, the so-called champions of ‘human rights’ who always drag MQM and even sensitive institutions for personal ‘gains’ after each such happening must apology and should understand that MQM and state institutions had nothing to do with the murder of Faisal Qurashi, brother of Shahid Qurashi, Editor The London Post. These ‘champions’ also linked this killing with that of Saleem Shahzad and raised their ‘voice’ for freedom of speech.

According to media reports published on October 8, “One of his brothers, Zahid Ahmed, told police Qureshi had been “receiving threats” from unidentified people over some news reports in his paper. “He was victim of targeted killing. My brother had been murdered because of stories he sent to his paper,” he said, but did not name any group or party thought to be responsible.

But the ground reality is altogether different and even can’t be written on this forum, because Qureshi, “being a bachelor” used to live alone in his family home, and he had many bad guys in his company.

OUT of the 97 percent Muslims, Shias make an estimated 20 percent of the population in the Sunni-dominated Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The country hosts the second-largest Shia population in the world after the neighboring Shia-dominated Islamic Republic of Iran. Pakistan became a sectarian battlefield after 1979-revolution in Iran. The then military dictator, Gen Zia, at the behest of Middle Eastern kingdoms and sheikhdoms, made the country a hell for the followers of the Athna‘ashariyyah (Twelver) Shia Muslims. Since then hundreds of thousands of innocent citizens have been killed brutally.

Despite being persecuted as a part of the 'hidden' state policy, today President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Speaker National Assembly Dr. Fahmida Mirza and many other high profile leaders are Shia Muslims. This is a unique thing in the Muslim world and shows the liberal Islamic face of the country.

However, this thing is not acceptable to the almighty military establishment which has lost wars but still believes that it's the so-called custodian of the country's so-called idialogical borders. That is why Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has allegedly given Shia-dominated Gilgit-Baltistan, a region under the control of the federal government of Pakistan, to the neighboring communist China, to bring down the current Shia-dominated government. It seems a story of getting rid of a Shia region and Shia regime in Pakistan!

According to people, whatever the Army Chief and his "gang of rogue generals" is doing in the country, falls in the category of "high treason" but the generals never consider themselves accountable to anyone. Every day, they violate the Constitution a thousand times, and still they are praised in the mainstream media as the most 'patriot' people on land.

The military establishment has got help of some Shia media persons and politicians in the war against the Shia-dominated government. Sources claim that creating Sunni-Shia tension in Balochistan, Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and other parts of the country is actually a part of the military establishment's strategy, and some Shia people are involved in it as well. "They want to get personal benifit from the criminal army generals. The generals are also cashing presence of Shias in their ranks especially in the mainstream media."

Sources say, being a Shia Muslim himself, military spokesperson and Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) chief Maj-Gen. Athar Abbas along his journalist brothers is leading Pakistan Army's Media War front against President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani. "Gen. Abbas is dreaming to become Army Chief after installing his boss Gen. Kayani in the Presidency, but Zardari has put a tough fight so far," said an insider.

Besides the influential Abbas Brothers, the military establishment is using other Shia Muslim journalists and politicians as well. "Some have been bribed, and others may be really against the PPP-led government," the source added.

The ruling party-sponsored blog, LUBP, has declared those "Opportunist Kufi Shias" who are killing their own Shia brothers and sisters to get benefits. It has criticized the Abbas Brothers and others. In a post, Shias enabling Shia killings in Pakistan, it says:

"This is all too familiar. kul yom ashura, kul arz karbala, kul opportunists kufi shia! (every day is Ashura, every land is Karbala and every opportunist is a Kufi Shia). Kufi Shias were those who assured Imam Hussain (AS) for support but instead participated in his slaughter in Karbala on the day of Ashura or looked the other way."

People say when President Zardari tried to give constitutional status to Gilgit-Baltistan, the military establishment opposed it because it's against their policy to have a Shia-dominated province in the Sunni-dominated country. "It'll cost them greatly," says a political worker from Skardu.

Here are two conversations that shed light on the plight of Shia citizens in Pakistan.

REPORTER-1: another bean spilling business :) a delegation of the local journalists was meeting the chief minister mehdi shah in gilgit. the delegation had only one sunni journalist while the rest were shias and by fate the sunni journalist somehow sat in the last row.

the chief minister without noticing the only sunni journalist started his meeting with a request to the journalists. while naming two shia politicians, the CM urged the journalists to persuade them not to speak against him. "they are our own momin brothers, you tell them to stop this malicious propaganda against me and i guarantee that no sunni will be chief minister ever in the history of gilgit-baltistan.

REPORTER-3: ‎@true.... but the question who is gonna break this vicious cycle when the state itself is patronizing this outdated ideology ...

BRAVO! Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani finally took the courage and warned the gang of three rogue generals of the Pakistan Army who are allegedly involved in political activism. Mr. Gilani said in the House that the elected Parliament would not accept “a state within the state” indicating towards the military establishment. He also exposed the military-dominated Osama bin Laden Commission’s hidden efforts to protect the real culprits who provided a safe heaven to the Al Qaeda leader, and allowed him to operate from Pakistani - a house near the Kakul Military Academy in Abbotabad.

Pakistani people believe that the political activism of three serving generals of the Pakistan Army – Army Chief Gen. Ishfaq Parvez Kayani, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt-Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha and Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) head Maj-Gen. Athar Abbas – has put the future of the military, democracy and country in danger.

After the warning of the Prime Minister, the next day, Army Chief Gen. Kayani said that he was not planning a takeover. The same day, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry also said that no military takeover was possible in his (Justice Chaudhry’s) presence, stressing that Pakistan will now have supremacy of the Constitution. Then former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said that the genie of the army and ISI’s intervention needed to be bottled up for stability of democracy in Pakistan.

Earlier, the ruling Pakistan People's Party-sponsored blog had claimed that three Punjabis – Mr. Sharif, Justice Chaudhry and Gen. Kayani – were playing a "dangerous game" against democracy and Pakistan, and had requested the Parliament to remove the Chief Justice of Pakistan for allegedly playing in the hands of Army Chief Gen. Kayani.

Whatever the fact may be, but looking at the track record of the three accused generals since the beginning, it's the demand of the majority of the over 184 million people of Pakistan to remove the three accused generals to save the military as a national institution.

"There are better and professional soldiers in the Army to lead as Army Chief," said a retired military office. "Gen. Kayani, Pasha and Abbas have become politicians in the uniform. That is why the country's security has become a national challange."

3- Why the ISI spread the news that Al-Qaeda may kidnap a senior member (Justice Javed Iqbal) of the Osama bin Laden commission?

4- Why the investigations of Osama bin-Laden’s presence in Pakistan and assassination of journalist Saleem Shahzad are going so slow but the ISI wants a an "immediate decision" in the so-called memo case?

5- Who is using Iran Khan as a bargaining-chip to force Nawaz Sharif to be an ally of the accused generals?

6- How Nawaz Sharif – who had been made hostage in his Raiwand farmhouse – suddenly got liberated and started addressing public rallies even in Sindh, the base of the ruling PPP?

7- Who is funding the anti-government public rallies in the country?

8- Who allows leaders of banned religious organizations to participate in anti-government rallies?

9- What kind of new political alliance is in the minds of the three accused generals to complete their hidden mission?

10- Millions are being spent by the ISI to form new alliances like the IJI which can prove fatal for the country?

The people know the answer. But Army Chief Gen. Kayani, ISI chief Gen. Pasha and the military's media war chief Gen. Athar Abbas seem clueless in this regard!

Charge-sheet against generals: There are plenty of allegations against the accused generals – Army Chief Gen. Kayani, ISI chief Gen. Pasha and the military's media war chief Gen. Athar Abbas seem clueless in this regard. Some of them are underneath:

1- Selling Pakistan-controlled Gilgit-Baltistan region to China so that the neighboring country could support a military coup like it supports the regimes in North Korea and Myanmar.

2- Making a "state within the state" by violation of the Constitution; conspiracy against the elected government; seeking help from foreign countries to stage a coup in Pakistan.

3- Sheltering international terrorists like Osama bin Laden and making the whole political and judicial systems of Pakistan hostage for the last four years.

4- Involvement in high profile assassinations including former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Governor Punjab Salman Taseer, Cabinet Minister Shahbaz Bhatti, elderly parents of Supreme Court judge Justice Javed Iqbal, Major-General Ameer Faisal Alvi, journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad, Col. Imam, Javed Khwaja, forcing Shumaila Faheem (widow of Faheem Shamshad who was killed by an American Raymond Davis in Lahore) to take poison to pressurize the American government, and other criminal cases.

5- Besides the massacre of students at the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque), killing of Shia Muslims in Quetta, Bajore and other places; attacks on the Ahmadis and the war crimes in Swat and Fata.

6- The generals are also accused of committing crimes against humanity by arranging terrorist attacks on civilians and military targets in the country as a part of their so-called “brinkmanship strategy” to show the world that Pakistan was also under attack from the so-called Taliban, an effort to get more dollars.

7- The three generals are allegedly involved in the murder plot of journalist Habib R. Sulemani and his family members, which was exposed in the first phase of the planned systematic killings.

What can be done? Enough is enough, people say in the terrorized country. If the elected President, Prime Minister, Parliament, Supreme Court and leaders of all political parties still behave like a terrorized submissive servant, then it will prove their death in silence—not only political but physical demise too as many believe that the accused generals are ruthless killers. "Yes, just see the track record of the generals," said an reporter in Peshawar.

Mr. Sulemani had suggested on the Twitter: “Army, ISI, ISPR chiefs encroachment: President, PM & Parliament must tell whole truth to the nation before taking action to save Pakistan!” Therefore, the elected and non-elected leadership of Pakistan along the Supreme Court of the country should dare to speak the truth to the nation before sacking the three generals to save the country. Truth is more powerful than the guns of criminal generals in the world.

"If Army Chief Gen Kayani imposes martial law, Pakistani military along the people & world will resist it." So, there are four options to take action against the 'ruthless' powerful generals:

1- President Asif Ali Zardari can dismisses or retire the accused generals and appoint new Army, ISI and ISPR chiefs as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Pakistan. Indeed there would be the new breed of generals who would follow former Armey Chief Jehangir Kiramat, who always respected the orders of the elected government according to the Constitution.

2- If the President is too much afraid of sacking the almighty generals, then through the Supreme Court the job can be done. And the people of Pakistan believe that the military will follow the orders of their political leaders and court not accused officers.

3- If the apex court is also unable to bell the cunning cats, then the Parliament should show that it’s not a “rubber stamp” of the ISI and should take a bold and historic action against the generals, who have become isolated in the entire world due to their alleged illegal activities. Pakistan will get global respect in this way only.

4- It's possible, as The Terrorland had written earlier, that the Corps Commander of the Pakistan Army force Gen. Kayani, Gen. Pasha and Gen. Abbas to resign gracefully.

The common people in Pakistan are just waiting for removal of Army Chief Gen. Ishfaq Parvez Kayani, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt-Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha and Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) head Maj-Gen. Athar Abbas. People say they are watching TV and waiting for removal news of the three generals. "The government must remove them from offices in the best national interest," says a journalist in Islamabad.

Independent analysts believe that the three accused generals have become the most controversial army officers in the 64 year history of Pakistan... more controversial than the military dictators of the past. They must resign or face legal action for the allegations like high treason and assassinations.

For some days a question is troubling my mind. I thought why not ask you. I believe you know there have been atrocities done by the Pakistani Military in which was then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh in 1971. However, in recent times I found that some scholars, of different countries, are trying to convince the world that there were very insignificant or negligible amount of atrocity done by the Pakistani Military in 1971. My question is, are those scholars possibly funded by the Pakistani Military to make their image better?

Dear Ms. Rahman,

Pakistan Army generals work as "mind-police" in our militarized and Talibanized country. They can do anything to hide their crimes! Journalists, writers and scholars can't work independently in this country anymore. I was attacked and am being punished along my family members for the last 21 months just for exposing their criminal face. No one in the Pakistani media can utter even my name due to fear of the devils in the khaki. They kill voices of dissent no matter a journalist or politician; even military-men and judges have become their silent victims!

As a writer, I'm really ashamed what the cruel generals did in Bangladesh prior to your independence. So are the feelings of other writers, journalists and scholars in Pakistan. I think there should be an independent investigation into the alleged intellectual dishonesty besides the genocide. The intellectual terrorism must be exposed.

I’m so sorry for being late in writing back to you. Actually, I was searching for a poem, I had written years back about the Bengali intellectual heritage of South Asia, but couldn’t find it so far. Anyway, thank you very much for the kind words in an unkind society!

Pak Saviour: Congratulating the kuffaar on their religious festivals is haraam to the extent described by Ibn al-Qayyim because it implies that one accepts or approves of their rituals of kufr, even if one would not accept those things for oneself. But the Muslim should not aceept the rituals of kufr or congratulate anyone else for them, because Allaah does not accept any of that at all, as He says (interpretation of the meaning): "If you disbelieve, then verily, Allaah is not in need of you, He likes not disbelief for His slaves. And if you are grateful (by being believers), He is pleased therewith for you. . ."[al-Zumar 39:7]

". . . This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islaam as your religion . . ." [al-Maa’idah 5:3]

‎"Whoever seeks a religion other than Islaam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers." [Aal ‘Imraan 3:85]

Do not relate Quran with ISI or any other thing...all the Ayaats are very clear and open for the believers.

Congratulating them as it implies taking part in their celebrations. Similarly, Muslims are forbidden to imitate the kuffaar by having parties on such occasions, or exchanging gifts, or giving out sweets or food, or taking time off work, etc., because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyah said in his book Iqtidaa’ al-siraat al-mustaqeem mukhaalifat ashaab al-jaheem: "Imitating them in some of their festivals implies that one is pleased with their false beliefs and practices, and gives them the hope that they may have the opportunity to humiliate and mislead the weak."

Whoever does anything of this sort is a sinner, whether he does it out of politeness or to be friendly, or because he is too shy to refuse, or for whatever other reason, because this is hypocrisy in Islaam, and because it makes the kuffaar feel proud of their religion.

Allaah is the One Whom we ask to make the Muslims feel proud of their religion, to help them adhere steadfastly to it, and to make them victorious over their enemies, for He is the Strong and Omnipotent.

It is not permissible to join in the kaafir festivals for the following reasons:

Firstly: because this entails imitating or resembling them, and “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood). This is a serious warning. ‘Abd-Allaah ibn al-‘Aas said: Whoever lives in the land of the mushrikeen and celebrates their Nawrooz (New Year) and their Mahrajaan (festivals), and imitates them until he dies, he will be a loser on the Day of Resurrection.

Secondly: taking part in their festivals is a kind of befriending them and showing love for them. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Awliyaa’ (friends, protectors, helpers), they are but Awliyaa’ of each other. And if any amongst you takes them (as Awliyaa’), then surely, he is one of them… “ [al-Maa’idah 5:51] “O you who believe! Take not My enemies and your enemies (i.e. disbelievers and polytheists) as friends, showing affection towards them” [al-Mumtahanah 60:1]

Thirdly: festivals are the matter of religion and beliefs, not the matter of worldly customs, as is indicated by the hadeeth: “Every nation has its Eid, and this is our Eid.” Their Eid or festival reflects their corrupt beliefs of Kufr and Shirk.

Fourthly: “And those who do not witness falsehood, and if they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass it by with dignity” [al-Furqaan 25:72 – interpretation of the meaning]. The scholars interpreted this aayah was referring to the festivals of the mushrikeen. It is not permissible to give any of them cards for their festivals, or to sell them cards or any of the other things they need for their festivals such as lights, trees or food – including turkey, candy canes, etc.

Brother, You need to read Quran and Hadeeth with open heart and broad mind to understand Islam despite pointing out your finger on anyone in ignorance. May Allah bless you. Ameen

THE media is full of ignorant, half-literate and lazy people who misuse words while writing or reporting. They often don’t care how sensitive their job is as a ‘word’ can make or break carriers of people. Some terms are very sensitive and people take them very seriously.

Hunza is a famous valley in Gilgit-Baltistan region. Most of the people there are very angry whenever the media uses the terms: Mir of Hunza or Rani of Hunza. “It seems as someone has fired a bullet into my heart,” says Fida Ali, whose grandfather had lost his life while working for the ruler of the erstwhile princely state Hunza. The despot ruler was known as ‘Mir of Hunza.’

“Like others, my grandfather was also forced to take a government luggage to the far-flung Shimshal village,” he said, “on the way, while crossing a river, my grandfather lost his life and my father became an orphan at the tender age of ten. I would like to draw attention to a term, ‘Mir of Hunza’, which is often misused in the Pakistani media.

‘Mir’ is a Persian word, which means leader of a group or tribe. In the tribal societies of the Indian subcontinent, many people used this word with their names to denote their position as leader of a tribe or group.

The rulers of Hunza used the word ‘Mir’ with their names during their 950 years of despotic rule. The ruler of Hunza was known as ‘Mir of Hunza’ until 1974, when the state was abolished and formally became part of the Northern Areas of Pakistan.

Mir Muhammad Jamal Khan (1912-76) was the last Mir of Hunza. Thus the title ‘Mir of Hunza’ is no more a legal title in Pakistan because Hunza is no more a separate state. It is a part of the sovereign state of Pakistan. Thus, anybody who uses this title can be charged, under the constitution, with treason and inciting mutiny. The sentences for both of these crimes is capital punishment.

Thus, many people find it shocking that some of our media still uses this term. The people of Hunza fought for many years to convince the Pakistani government to abolish the so-called state. I, therefore, hope that Pakistan’s media will be respectful of the sentiments of the majority of people from Gilgit and Baltistan, and especially those from Hunza.

Rehman then asked: “According to Daily Times, when there is no more any "Mir" it means there is no "Rani" either... and when you claim to be a "Rani" they people of Hunza may "hate" you...?”

There was no answer. However, a lady from the region says that if members of the former ruling family just be normal citizens of Pakistan without any tribal pride, then no one will hate them. "Instead of faking things, be yourselves, and get respect."

LAST month, Habib Sulemani had sent a Twitter message to the President of Pakistan and Amnesty International, raising a question regarding the security of the country's chief justice who had asked the military to keep away from politics.

Mr. Sulemani had written on Nov 27, 2011: @Pres_Zardari GHQ activism and speech of Justice Chaudhry about Army rule: Is the Chief Justice of Pakistan safe? Any pressure? @amnesty

And now, the ruling Pakistan People's Party-sponsored blog, LUBP in a post claims that three Punjabis – former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Kayani – are playing a "dangerous game" against democracy and Pakistan. "Yet again, our holy guardians in GHQ (Generals Kayani et al) are pulling the real strings." Another post demands: "Pakistan’s elected parliament must remove Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry."

However, nothing has been said regarding the sacking of the almighty Army Chief. But a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan for removal of ISI chief Lt-Gen Shuja Pasha. Sources say that a high-treason case against army generals (for their political activism and charges of toppling the elected government) is being mulled in the political arena. But no one knows if the ISI will block rather crush any such effort.

Here is a cyber debate on a post saying that Army, ISI and ISPR chiefs' resignations will end crises in Pakistan. It sheds light on the current political situation of the country.

Why investigations of bin-Laden and slain journalist Saleem Shahzad commissions are yet not complete but the Army and ISI chiefs want a an "immediate decision" in the memo case?

"THOSE people, who currently lead journalistic bodies in Pakistan, are mostly corrupt and hardcore criminals, who are involved in bribery, extortion, illegal real-estate business and human trafficking to Europe and the Americas. This is an open secret rather a universal truth now.

"Instead of any help, these journalist leaders can make plots to kill or humiliate their own colleagues whenever their masters in the uniform declare a truthful journalist ‘traitor’ or ‘foreign agent’ or working against ‘national interest’, which is actually Generals’ interest."

This is what a previous post – When ISI caught top journalist dancing naked in Islamabad – of The Terrorland blogs had painted the current journalistic scene in the country as many journalists and leading journalistic bodies of Pakistan have become a part of the military junta, secret agencies, and militarized political mafias.

However, in the past, Pakistan has seen some very brilliant journalists. Among them is Anthony Mascarenhas (1928-1986). Mr. Mascarenhas is, unfortunately, a forgotten name in his militarized country, but the world still remembers him as a professional-to-the-core and truthful journalist. He wrote the eyewitness account of atrocities in the erstwhile West Pakistan, Bengal while his colleagues concealed the truth according to the orders of the military junta.

Today, those Pakistani journalists, who worked during the 1960s and ‘70s, feel sorry for not being brave enough to tell the truth to the people of the country—as a result the country disintegrated during the 1971 war with India! Pakistan could have been saved if free flow of information was made possible by the military regime of General Yahya Khan.

According to the BBC, Mr. Mascarenhas' article changed history. During the war, the military regime took him along with seven other journalists to a violence-hit area in Bengal. When returned home, he wrote the truth instead of the military-told propaganda, and a British newspaper published it. As a result he lost his country!

His wife, Yvonne Mascarenhas, told the BBC: "I'd never seen my husband looking in such a state. He was absolutely shocked, stressed, upset and terribly emotional. He told me that if he couldn't write the story of what he'd seen he'd never be able to write another word again."

Pakistani generals have never learned from the past! Today, they are repeating the same criminal strategy in Balochistan as journalists from other parts of the country can’t go in that province for reporting. The local media-persons, writers, intellectuals and political workers are either harassed by the military or militants. Many journalists were killed for telling the truth. Dead bodies are found from parts of the province regularly.

Generals! Stop the murder-strategy—not you, free flow of information can save our Pakistan, which you have made a terrorized land on earth. God! Save our country from these criminal generals!

THE people of Pakistan believe that the crises in the country are artificial... created by a group of army generals – Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) boss Lt-Gen. Shuja Pasha and Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) chief Maj-Gen. Athar Abbas – to get personal benefits illegally as they are not ready to retire according to the laws of the country.

"If President Zardari," a source claims, "had not fled the country under the pretext of heart attack, he would have been put under house arrest like Hussain Haqqani (former envoy to Washington D.C. and victim of the military-gate scam), and the generals would have formally announced their new version of a bloodless coup d'état..." After a meaningful smile, the source added: "Wajid Shamsul Hassan (Pakistani high commissioner in the UK and the only pro-government envoy) has so far evaded traps skillfully!"

Sources claim that the generals have not only taken the elected civilian government hostage but the Parliament has literally become a rubber stamp. Parliamentarians can’t speak anything about the anti-democracy and anti-state activities of the generals due to fear of life. "The TV and newspapers can't say anything without the instructions from the ISPR. There is complete mum over handing over of Gilgit-Baltistan to China as there was silence even after the Fall of Dhaka," the source commented and added:

“Whenever, a member speaks about the military regime, ISI and MI officials go to their homes or call them to refrain from saying anything against the Army. Opposition Leader (in the Lower House) Chaudhry Nisar was made a victim of the worst kind recently… but still the poor man is silent… however, the Sharif know it... therefore, they’ve now become a part of the ISI game formally... that is why the PML-N was allowed to hold public rallies in Sindh!”

The other day, Bushra Gohar – a brave female MNA, known as the "only man" in the Pakistani Parliament – has sought resignation of ISI chief Gen Pasha in the Lower House. “The government is in the hands of the generals,” the source said, “the President and Prime Minister have no power, so how can they remove the Army or ISI chiefs? (President) Zardari and (PM) Gilani can't say anything even to the federal secretaries and military-appointed Foreign and Finance ministers..."

However, the source said that "there is a way, if the Parliament seeks resignation of the accused generals through a resolution or the Corps Commanders demand their resignation… then change in command is possible!”

What the generals want? The three generals – Kayani, Pasha and Abbas – fear legal action after retirement as they are allegedly involved in the assassinations of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Governor Punjab Salman Taseer, Cabnet Minister Shahbaz Bhatti, parents of Supreme Court judge Justice Javed Iqbal, Major-General Ameer Faisal Alvi, reporter Syed Saleem Shahzad and others.

Analysts say that Gen Kayani and Lt-Gen Pasha are more insecure as they have no one in the corridors of power to defend them after retirement while Maj-Gen Abbas has brothers in the mainstream Pakistani media: ZaffarAbbas is editor daily Dawn, Mazhar Abbas is at ARY TV, Azhar Abbas works for Geo TV, and one influential brother is in the United States of America. “Athar Abbas is just like Hussain Haqqani,” a reporter says, “he will become a witness against his current bosses, saying that he did whatever he was ordered by Kayani and Pasha… so he will escape, but the two generals will bear the brunt…”

The reporter claimed that one of the powerful Abbas Brothers in a private conversation had disclosed that Gen Kayani was a dumb who didn't know how to talk to the media, therefore, (Maj-Gen.) Athar Abbas had advised the Army Chief not to speak to the media to avoid slip-of-the-tongue controversies like the "strategic assets" incident...!

Plan of the generals: A mouthpiece of the ISI, Ahmed Quraishi, has revealed the plan of the three generals on Facebook: “Pakistan: A civilian govt of competent nationalist Pakistanis. No elections, no politics, no rallies for 10 years. Let all talk show anchors & political workers sell cholay [works as street hawkers] for a decade. Only business, education, culture & prosperity. Full de-politicization.”

This is what every military dictator has told the people of Pakistan before or after a coup. And this thing led to the breakdown of the country in 1971. What the generals want now? The world will not accept martial law in Pakistan and the alleged land bribe to China will formally disintegrate Pakistan…! Are you awaken, generals?

Habib Sulemani, in his latest twit from solitary confinement, says: “If Army Chief Gen Kayani imposes martial law, Pakistani military along the people & world will resist it.” It seems true. Because the Pakistan Army as a national institution can't afford bad public image anymore! If martial law is imposed, this time it would be suicidal for the generals!

Respect democracy and democratically elected public representatives – in particular senators, members National and Provincial assemblies – no matter how foolish they seem to you... it is not your job to judge public representatives... they are your boss and as good soldiers, it is your duty to salute them and obey their orders. You are public servants; try to understand the terms and conditions of your services. Never try to act like masters... if you want to live with a shred of dignity in the changed world!”

THE army generals, who were ruling Pakistan after imposing martial in 1958, were intellectually bankrupt who thought killing their own people was in the best interest of the state.

Therefore, these phony statesmen in the khaki lost the eastern part of this unfortunate country, in a war with the neighboring India, which became an independent country, Bangladesh, on this day forty years ago: December 16, 1971. About 500,000 innocent people were brutally killed in atrocities; however, the Bangladesh government puts the figure at three million.

As Pakistanis, we are so sorry for the atrocities and wish our brothers and sisters in Bangladesh a happy Independence Day. However, we want to analyze the historic event regarding the situation of today's Pakistan.

If former Indian Prime Minister Indra Gandhi is the founder of Bangladesh, then according to some intellectuals, American President Richard Nixon is the founder of this remaining Pakistan. If Mr. Nixon had not interrupted during the war, Pakistan would have become history as the Indian Iron Lady (Ms. Gandhi) was determined to teach a lesson to the womanizer Pakistani military dictator and President, Gen. Yahya Khan and his gang.

It may be due to this theory that Pakistani generals as well as politicians always seek help, guidance and aid from Washington, D.C. especially since the fall of Dhaka. Anyway, currently the traditional Pak-US relations are passing through a very difficult phase at military level. The long years of direct military rule has made Pakistan a 'parasitic' nation state in the world. Amid the long standoff with the United States of America, Pakistani military leadership has turned towards the neighboring China to stop a possible American action as a part of the ongoing Global War on Terror!

In such a time of 'artificial' crisis, the communist China can't provide a free and warm motherly bosom for an Islamic state, which is "involved" in insurgency in its Muslim-dominated Xinjiang region. It's not China only, in the globalized world, everyone looks for their long term national interests except Pakistani generals.

Almost a year back, The Terrorland had reported that Pakistani military leadership was considering giving a part of land to China. However, a few days ago, in the backdrop of the military establishment's foreign policy review, a regional newspaper, Bang-e-Sahar, has reported that Pakistani leaders were mulling over a plan to lease Gilgit-Baltistan to China for a period of 50 years.

It came as a shock not only for the over two million people of Gilgit-Baltistan – who had joined Pakistan 64 years ago and are seeking representation in the Parliament – but also for the over 184 million people of Pakistan. As usual, the mainstream media is silent because they only report with a green signal from the military regime's public relations office.

Being a representative of the common people of Pakistan, The Terrorland Team has demanded through the social media that Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani should immediately come on the media and tell the truth about this breaking-news!

With the help of China, the Burmese military junta is ruling for decades and the democratic bird (Aung San Suu Kyi) is in the cage even after winning the Nobel Peace Prize... but the dumb Pakistani generals forget that the junta is in dialogue with the US and Ms Clinton had visited the country recently.

Cheap goods and aid may not do that what freedom of thought and freedom of expression can do! I'm hopeful the Chinese government will realize it and evolutionary will give way to democracy! That is the only way to be a vibrant part of the global community in the 21st century.

German unemployment has reached a post unification record; Indias industrial production is declining; China is showing signs of a major slowdown, only propped up by state intervention and authoritarian commands from the Bejing bureaucracy."

A very interesting situation is in a Chinese village where village land was taken by communist govrnment as a result villagers started protest and a villager died like the police killing in Hunza. BBC says "a stand-off between villagers and the authorities is continuing in southern China's Guangdong province."

Latest BBC: "China's internet censors have blocked searches relating to an ongoing protest in the village of Wukan, web users say. Users of Sina Weibo, the country's Twitter-like micro-blogging site, say searches for Wukan return no results. Instead, a message appears saying: "According to relevant law, regulations and policies, search results for Wukan cannot be displayed."

THE TERRORLAND: This Admin really respects your sentiments, Mr. Waqar Rizvi. It's quite natural. Only a fool would love all writings of any writer :)

Habib Sulemani criticizes policies of state organs so that they could be improved. He has advised The Terrorland Team to encourage freedom of thought and freedom of expression, and it can be seen practically in our group blogs and other social media pages.

Mr. Sulemani writes the "bitter truth" to benefit the society at large especially in the long run. Therefore, perceptions can be different but keep this thing in mind: he has written nothing against Pakistan or any other country but is pointing out flaws in government policies.

He criticizes the military generals and the ISI; they kill Balochis who protest against social injustices, Pashtuns are being killed in the name of Taliban. innocent Shia and Ahmedi citizens are massacred in the name of religion time and again. What kind of a security agency is this ISI? The generals "sponsor" terrorist attacks inside the country to create hatred against the USA and then get "blood money." Change this criminal policy in the name of "brinkmanship" strategy!

It's time to bridge gaps with the USA, China, India and every country in the globalized world. Hatred will make us suffer more! Let's love life and respect the whole world. In this way, as a nation state, we can get peace, prosperity and global respect!

Endnote: Yesterday, Pakistani Parliament sought resignation of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt-Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha who reportedly sought help from Arab countries for a military coup in Pakistan. A female MNA, Bushra Gohar, raised the issue in the Lower House and Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar agreed with the respected stateswoman known for her bravery as being the “only man” in the current Pakistani Parliament!

Earlier, Prime Minister Gilani had declared the Military-gate scam (due to fear of the ISI, the mainstream media dubs it as Memogate scam) a conspiracy against the parliament and country.

It’s an open secret that the Parliamentarians believe that there would be no crises in Pakistan if three generals – Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Kayani, ISI chief Lt-Gen. Shuja Pasha and ISPR chief Maj-Gen. Athar Abbas – resign from their military positions. However, sources claim, the generals have created all the mess not for resignation but for further extension in their services.

However, everyone is free to accuse and abuse the democratic United States, rather the establishment encourages this engineered collective social behavior in Pakistan.

NO doubt, China is going to be a global phenomenon. The only thing which is damaging its credibility in the world is ban on freedom of expression in the country.

If the Chinese government releases writer and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Liu Xiaobo, and lifts ban from novelist and blogger Han Han, it can win the hearts and minds of the entire world!

In Islamabad, some people close to the government are doubtful about the activities of China in the (Gilgit-Baltistan) region! They’re giving an impression that China is gradually becoming an imperialist power encroaching on foreign territories! They give the impression that the first military dictator, Gen. Ayub Khan, gifted a large area to China in the 1960s, another dictator, Gen. Zia, lost Siachen Glacier to India in the 1980s and now, when Gen. Kayani calls the shots in the country, Gojal, area-wise the largest tehsil of Gilgit-Baltistan region, had literally gone under the administration of China.

I don't know what the fact is? However, publicly there is silence! To talk about socialist China and Islamist Saudi Arabia, one has to be cautious in Pakistan! However, everyone is free to accuse and abuse the democratic United States, rather the establishment encourages this engineered collective social behavior in Pakistan.

Some civil society members are also hinting that through relief packages, global powers are trying to win trust of people in the country. I don't believe in conspiracy theories but if a state is not protecting the life and honor of its citizens – heads of different state organs try to get extension in services or keep power within their families – then others would come to fill the blanks!

A land needs an owner and people seek basic human rights in the globalizing world. A whole year has passed and yet the government is unable to open the KKH. Similarly, 63 years have passed and so far the Constitution of Pakistan is silent about the legal status of Giglit-Baltistan – the 72,000 sq/km region where people have no basic human rights like other areas of the country. The people say they're Pakistani but the ruling class of the country is unwilling to give the people their due right.

My sincere advice to the Pakistani government and establishment is: immediately provide relief to the (landslide) affected people of Gojal and then, through the Parliament, give Gilgit-Baltistan a Constitutional status either as the Fifth Province or an autonomous status like Azad Kashmir. The over two million people of this strategically important region have sacrificed and suffered too much since 1947, now give them relief.

SUCCESSIVE governments of the United States of America have given billions of dollars to the Pakistani regimes, from time to time, but these grants, donations, aid or whatever name you may give them, neither served the common people of Pakistan nor the United States. The money always goes directly into the pockets of the unscrupulous Pakistani rulers – politicians, generals and civilian bureaucrats – who transfer it into their foreign accounts.

Time and again, we've been appealing the US government and other leaders of the world to be careful about the corrupt and criminal rulers of Pakistan. In a recent post, The Terrorland had reported that people seek global action against Pakistani leaders (politicians as well as military men) because in the country no one can do anything to stop the plunder going on for the last 64 years. The post appealed to the American and global leaders:

President Obama! Pakistani leaders get the money and weapon from you and then use it against you and our own poor people (Pakistanis) through their own militant brigades! We both have become victims and the entire world is suffering today. So, take it seriously! And whatever you want to do for the welfare of our country (Pakistan) and people, please, do it directly!

Global leaders! Listen to the cries of the terrorized people of Pakistan! Your grants and donations to the civilian-military ruling mafia can't root out global terrorism nor it can prosper the people of Pakistan, rather it will kick you further deep into recession and many more social and economical troubles... the only solution to get out of the mess is very simple: do away with this gang of criminals in Pakistan!

“Nothing can root out terrorism until Pakistani civilian and military leaders are brought to justice for their corruption and crimes against humanity,” says a journalist. “There is no law and order in the country and four out of every 10 persons are living below the poverty line."

During a debate on the Facebook page of The Terrorland, an American woman shocked the admin by reporting her miseries as a citizen of the sole Super Power of the world. Her comment says that without caring for the ordinary Americans, her government was recklessly spending billions in other countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Mr. Obama! You must listen to the cries of an American citizen for whom the American dream and passport both have lost their charm—and she seems like a helpless Pakistani citizen—not American at all! Just see her comments, what she says:

Literature — English is also a language of Islam and Pakistan

Pakistan isn't just the capital of global terrorism, the country can also be seen on the literary map of the world! Isn't it remarkable?

ENGLISH is the “official” and Urdu “national language” of Pakistan. However, as a part of the dirty politics of the South Asian region, English has remained the lingo of a tiny unscrupulous ruling elite that exploits the poor and uneducated since 1947.

Pakistani rulers – politicians, generals and civilian bureaucrats – worship English and dollar like God! But they keep telling the uneducated lot to hate the language and money as symbols of “slavery” of the British colonial era and ongoing "expansionism" of the United States of America. The illiterate people are reminded through the military-controlled media to oppose the Americans and their language. They paint English as an “un-Islamic” and “language of the enemy.”

The poor are shown Urdu medium schools and seminaries (typical nurseries of extremism) while the children of the rulers go to English medium schools, cadet colleges, British and American universities. In this way, the rulers keep the masses in the dark and go on looting the country as well as the global community. Whenever the oppressed people cry, they're told to be patient according to the teachings of Islam... "Your suffering will lead you into eternal peace in the everliving paradise... Don’t care for money in this short-lived world as a shroud has no pockets!"

Thus the society has been divided into two major groups: the materialistic ruling class that loots for generations, and the religious poor being looted for ages. The ruling class, especially the military establishment, spreads religious and political confusion in the society so that people keep fighting, and no one creates any hurdle for it in its plunder game. With the help of the clergy and secret agencies, the military establishment has very cunningly entangled the nation of over 184 million people in useless debates of the 19th and 20th centuries—for example, there is a question of the Sir Syed Ahmed Khan-era: what to do with English and democracy in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan?

It's not the time to debate over acceptance of English rather it’s the perfect time to get perfection in this global language. People should never fear English or consider it an "enemy language" or "language of the enemy" as the ruling class propagates it through its criminal brigades. The M4 – military, mullah, militant and media – should own English publicly. It's a universal truth that English serves Islam and Pakistan more than any other language in the Cyber Age.

Therefore, the government especially the powerful generals should accept English as a national language along with Urdu, Sindhi, Punjabi, Balochi, Pashto, Seraiki, Kashmiri, Potohari, Hindko, Brahvi, Gojri, Shina, Balti, Chitrali, Burushaski, Wakhi and other languages spoken within the boundaries of Pakistan. Don't hesitate to accept English as an Islamic and Pakistani language anymore!

English is easy and friendly: The Cyber Generation knows that English is the easiest and a user-friendly language. The cellphone and Internet made it a means of communication for the masses not only in Pakistan but also in other parts of the world. From South Asia to Middle East and other regions where people used to hesitate while talking or writing in English, the Cyber Age Revolution has given them new confidence. Those who still don't speak or write English, they at least use its (Roman) script or words in their chitchat or text messages. So, directly or indirectly, English is a part of everyone's life on planet earth.

My observation says that the fear, hesitation and shyness of people regarding English is gradually vanishing in our language-conscious society. English is now a desi (South Asian) language. Therefore, the global demand for good quality desi literature is increasing (although the publishing world is going through a sea change!). That is why desi writers have accelerated keyboard-punching! This is amazing but history has yet to decide the net worth of Pakistani writers in the globalized world of literature!

When people from different ethnic and religious backgrounds communicate in a global language like English, ultimately the gaps are bridged! With the popularity of English at mass level, there is hope for a new era of peace and prosperity in this violent country, and it'll affect the world at large too. What politicians, generals and the corporate world have lost in the thoughtless and mismanaged Global War on Terrorism globally, could be achieved by writers! That is the power of the keyboard (longhand-guys read pen!)

Therefore, there should be an end to the traditional bigotry of our ruling class especially the generals – the self-styled custodians of the ideological borders of Pakistan who have failed to defend the geographical borders of this country. The people of our terrorized land should now clear their collective mind that education in English will not lead their children astray! English protects the country and faith more than our pricy military (which only consumes our development budget).

A trilingual nation: Most of the people in Pakistan are trilingual. A person in Punjab speaks Punjabi at home, communicates in Urdu with the people of other provinces and uses English in official correspondence. English is also used for communication in the cyberspace and international level events etc.

Similarly, in the neighboring India many people in the South and Eastern parts use their first languages plus Hindi and English for communication. English is replacing Hindi gradually in the media. I can remember when a rare Southern Deve Gowda (from Karnataka) became Prime Minister of India in 1996, he used to speak in English on TV instead of Hindi. In those times some journalists used to say that as a Southern, Mr. Gowda hated Hindi, others argued that he didn't know the politically "union national language" of India just like other people of the region!

Pakistan's Founding Father M.A. Jinnah declared Urdu as the national language of the country but he used to speak English as his first language! It shows that English is deep-rooted in the fertile soil of the Subcontinent. Although it's really hard to speak three languages at a time for any normal human being but those who are well-versed in English are considered having an international passport. The English-speaking people get more chances of economic and social uplift than others anywhere in the world. So, the self-styled custodians of the vernaculars should think twice before speaking against the "international passport" in the global village!

Desi and Islamic literature in English: There is a treasure of Islamic literature in English. The works of Quranic scholars like Allama Abdullah Yusuf Ali and Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah (their life stories bring tears to eyes), and Mohammed Marmaduke Pickthall (who was also a novelist and giants like E.M. Froster had recognized his creative genius) are historic in nature. After reading these Muslim scholars of the 20th century, intellectuals realized that English is also a language of Islam besides Arabic, Persian and Urdu.

In the present time electronic media, Islamic televangelist Dr. Zakir Naik has increased popularity of English among the religious population of South Asia. This shows that English has accepted Islam and Muslims have adopted English as their own language.

Similarly, the scene of desi English literature is becoming richer with the passage of time. Limiting myself to Pakistan, after the grand old men and women of Pakistani English literature – like Professor Ahmed Ali, G. Allana, Alys Faiz, Taufiq Rafat, Daud Kamal, Zulfikar Ghose, Bapsi Sidhwa and other pioneers – new writers and poets are mushrooming. Some writers have found their niche internationally. Pakistan isn't just the capital of global terrorism, the country can also be seen on the literary map of the world! Isn't it remarkable?

The most interesting thing is that those young guys who write in English are from different social classes of the segregated society. Amongst the published writers, there are people like the Urdu-medium-Englishman Nadeem Aslam whose first story appeared in an Urdu language newspaper in Pakistan; anglophile Kamila Shamsie's mother Muneeza Shamsie is a well-known literary journalist; Bina Shah has a feudal background; city-boy Mohsin Hamid rocketed to stardom and big fame with small books; village-boy Muhammad Hanif is very famous in Pakistan who seems at ease both in Urdu and English; acclaimed short-story writer Daniyal Mueenuddin's father is a Pakistani and mother an American. The list is long and it includes some hillbillies too who love to express themselves in prose and poetry by employing this sophisticated language!

Don't fear English language writers: Those who write in the vernaculars and oppose the desi English writers, they are advised to jump on the bandwagon instead of burning their precious blood in jealousy or otherwise particularly those writers who are no more young!

If you want to know the main reason why English has become a lingua franca in the world then listen calmly! Native English writers never opposed new things and absorbed good literature from anywhere and everywhere. Thus they made English an asset of the human race on planet earth! We make fun of Persian language in Pakistan [Parro Farsi, becho tail] but the history of English language says that the Englishmen adopted Persian classics as their own, and today, Khayyam and Rumi are among the most-read poets in the West.

The lesson is: don't care much about the language or medium of expression — rather concentrate on the content, which actually gives life to both the writer and writing!

Urdu and regional language writers should broaden their mind and canvas! In the globalized intellectual world, I think, those who have written both in Urdu and English or have translated their works into English, are also part of the Pakistani literature in English. Among these writers are (don't be surprised by some names) Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Professor Ralph Russell, Qurratulain Haider, Intizar Hussain, Abdullah Hussain, Muzaffar Ali Syed, Gilani Kamran, Dr. Anis Nagi, Dr. Saadat Saeed, Dr. Abrar Ahmad, Yasmeen Hameed, Sadullah Shah, Harris Khalique, Asif Farrukhi, Dr. Muhammad Ali Siddiqui, Dr. Rauf Parekh, Muhammad Umar Memon and others.

Plus, those who have written in Urdu but their works have been translated into English, they're also a part of Pakistani literature in English. Among them are giants like Manto, Ghulam Abbas, Shaikh Ayaz, Enver Sajjad, Hasan Manzar, Kishwar Naheed, Fahmida Riaz, Farkhanda Lodhi, Zaitoon Bano, Dur Mohammed Kassi, Masood Ashar, Zaheda Hina, Amer Sindhu and many others. So, the typical narrowed perception of language and literature should change now! No matter what the traditionalists and conservative writers, poets, critics, linguists, philologists, political and social scientists say—change is eminent!

Change the syllabus: The policymakers at government level should change the current outdated syllabuses of English, Urdu and other languages and literature particularly at university level. Desi English writers should be included in the syllabuses properly. The vernacular writings must also be a part of the English syllabus. The traditional teachers/professors should also change their typical mindset and method of teaching in the changed world. In this way many languages and literature departments (Urdu, Punjabi, Seraiki etc) could be saved from total destruction!

To make a long story short — Pakistani and Muslim writers, along with other creative people from all over the world, are enriching English language and literature as their primary medium of expression. The once a language-of-the colonial-exploiters is now the pride of the whole world! Thus proper communication will reduce global conflicts. This is strategically and intellectually very important for sustainable peace and prosperity in the polarized world. The intellectual arena needs more attention than the military.

Message to the youth: I've a very simple message for the youth: learn English not as a "foreign language" but as your "own" language. Think in English, dream in English, talk in English, read in English and write in English...

To understand this very simple message, you should listen to the Pakistani man on You Tube, who tries hard to learn English with some helpful foreigners. Don't laugh at him... just see his devotion... no matter who makes fun of him, he is determined to learn the global language... he is armed with confidence and wants to adopt a "foreign" language as his own! With similar zeal and determination, people should send their children to English medium schools. Thus the whole generation will change! If you want to learn English, then make this funny-looking man your hero! Feel free to make mistakes... without errors, perfection is just a wild dream!

Let's revolt against the traditional bigotry of our rulers! The ruling class should stop cashing ignorance and poverty! The puppet politicians and almighty generals should pity the nation! There is a clear message from the people especially youth to the ruling class: like religious polarization, stop segregating the society on linguistic basis for your sinister motives! Let English be a means of communication at public level without any prejudice.

THE headline of this post has been taken from a sociological formula of Habib R. Sulemani, which actually is written in the mathematical/statistical form:

It can also be written as: t = m4. Anyway, in this formula, ‘t’ stands for terrorism while ‘m⁴’ or 'm4' denotes military, mullah, militant and media. In other words: Terrorism = military + mullah + militant + media.

After reading the previous post, 'The Terrorland Team will be razed with a huge blast!', a journalist, who had visited Pakistan's tribal areas, has sent the above exclusive photograph to The Terrorland group blog as a token of appreciation for bringing forth the truth to the secret agencies-controlled mainstream media and kept-in-the-dark people of Pakistan.

You can see how two well-dressed personnel of the Pakistan Army (right) with two poorly dressed but armed militants, a media-person (identification blurred), a mullah (probably the remote-control for the militants), and two paramilitary men are posing for the photographer.

The source claims that the Taliban can't survive even a day if the Pakistani generals withdraw their brinkmanship support to the militants who are living under constant fear of attacks from within and outside!! These poor tribal souls, who have not enough food to eat or cloths to wear in the rough mountainous region, want to live a peaceful life but the generals are forcing them to fight among themselves as well as with the security forces, and in the neighboring Afghanistan on certain occasions when ordered.

Why the generals are determined to destroy Pakistan? Anyone who can answer this question?

Innocent people are forcefully made Taliban/mujahideen by the ISI and MI, and then killed to get personal gain... innocent students are first gathered in the Lal Masjid and they are told to protest violently and then are brutally killed on camera... innocent journalist Saleem Shahzad for point their crimes, and elderly parents of Supreme Court judge Javed Iqbal (after the judge's remarks on ISI) are brutally killed. If you are from the ISI, MI or their terror-alliance MQM-Altaf, then remember Waqar, people like you are also killed (look Col Imam, Javed Khwaja and Dr Imran Farroq). They sell and cash deaths of innocent Pakistanis. How much destruction they want? We believe in God. Man proposes and Allah disposes! IMAM Hussain (626 - 680 AD) was the son of Imam Ali (AS) – a cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Imam Ali was the fourth and final Rashidun Caliph of Sunni Muslims and first Imam of Shia Muslims. Sunnism and Shaism emerged as the two major schools of thought in Islam after the death of the Holy Prophet.

Imam Hussain (AS) is exalted as a martyr who fought tyranny as he refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid, the Umayyad caliph. According to Wikipedia, "Imam Hussain rose up to create a regime that would reinstate a 'true' Islāmic polity as opposed to what he considered the unjust rule of the Umayyads. As a consequence, he was killed and beheaded in the Battle of Karbala in 680 (61AH)."

Today, there are about 72 sects or schools of thoughts within Islam. All of them respect Imam Hussain and his family. But some people fight with each other due to different historical narrations about the tragedy of Karbala, which happened 50 years after the death of the founder of Islam. The unfortunate thing is that they have declared acts of terrorism ‘jihad’ which is against the true spirit of Islam that teaches tolerance and peaceful coexistence in a society.

We are presenting the points of view of different schools of thought within Islam for the readers of The Terrorland group blogs. It aims at increasing the level of tolerance in the Pakistani society, which is facing state-sponsored terrorism – a policy of the ruling class in the name of "brinkmanship national strategy" which is the greatest tragedy of our times.

People have to be rational and tolerant to bring peace back in the country. Islam stresses on piety, peace and tolerance. So, let's at least listen to a different narration or point of view within Islam, and test our personal tolerance level. We should be critical and disagree with any point of view that is our democratic right. But still we should respect each others points of view. We should disagree in a polite not violent way. We should show grace in opposition even.

Let's think about the tragic historical event and its resemblance in the world today. Listen to the speakers, links given below, with a critical mind and analyze things in your own way independently.

Like last year, we hope that people belonging to all sects and faiths will play their due rule in maintaining peace and harmony during the Muharram mourning processions this year as well. We are with our Shia brothers and sisters in expressing human anguish, and staging protest against tyranny and oppression in society.

English language gives birth to Roman Urdu

IN this era of information technology, for successive governments, politicians and scholars, it's not that easy to impose a language of their own choice on the masses against their will! It's the people and the environment, especially the economic conditions around, which choose a language, dialect or script for the masses to communicate at large. But, if an elected governments and scholars are enough intelligent, they can influence the masses and give them a correct direction, which can benefit all of them and their coming generations.

I read Dr. Rauf Parekh’s article: "Roman Urdu? No!" published in the daily Dawn on January 19, 2003. The learned author has adopted a judgmental way of expression... and has strongly opposed a Roman script for Urdu, which is being developed in the "cyber world." He has presented his critique in a very emotional way! I can’t question his scholarly ability, sincerity and love for the cultural ethos and the traditional script of the national language of Pakistan. I agree with him on the merits of the original Arabic script, which is the essence of Urdu language. It should be continued, but looking at the current global situation, I think, besides Arabic and Devanagari (Hindi), Urdu language needs a Roman script as well. We can’t ignore the ground realities of the 21st century. Therefore, I want to raise some points totally on practical grounds in an objective way.

Urdu and Pakistan: Although Urdu is the first language of just 7.57 percent Pakistanis but rest of the population uses it as a second language. With its Hindi dialect, Urdu is considered as the third major language of the world after Chinese and English. Besides Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Nepal, Urdu is also spoken in many other countries as South Asians, seeking greener pastures, have spread everywhere in the world. Thus it can be said that Urdu (together with Hindi) is a widely spoken language which has a global appeal for many people in different parts of the world.

Let me speak a bit historically. Urdu language vocabulary consists of borrowed or loanwords from Persian, Sanskrit, Arabic, Turkish, English and regional languages of South Asia. Grammatically, its script is Arabic in Nastaliq style with some extra characters. It came into existence during the Moghul rule over India. Urdu is a Turkish word, which means 'foreign' or 'horde' as it was formulated by the interaction of foreign armies, merchants and immigrants to India. Therefore, Urdu is also known as the ‘language of troops.’ This thing politically suits our military-dominated country very well!

Once Deccan, Delhi and Lucknow used to be literary centers of Urdu but now even the Urdu classics are not known in their cities of birth or burial... I mean in India! Before the partition of the Subcontinent, this poor language became a victim of communal politics! The Hindus tailed it with Sanskrit and adopted the Devanagari script while the Muslims flooded it with Arabic and Persian words, carrying it with the traditional Arabic script. The Hindus tried to evolve a language that carried the cultural ethos of Hinduism – faith of the majority of Indians – thus they named it as 'Hindi.' In a typical attempted revenge, the Muslims further bombarded the language with Arabic and Persian themes so that it looks a purely Islamic language... thus they called it Urdu!

In Pakistan, successive governments promised to make Urdu the official language but they couldn’t do so in the presence of almighty English: the global lingua franca! Despite public announcements, the ruling class continued to side itself with English silently. This hypocritical behavior created a gape between the ruling class and the masses that couldn't be bridged even this day. The duel behavior of the ruling class didn't damage Urdu and other vernacular languages only but also corrupted the people intellectually!

Today, poets and writers like Amir Khusraw, Mir, Dr. Iqbal, Premchand, Bedi and Faiz are just stories of the past! There is lack of original thinking and creation in the vernacular languages of the whole South Asian region that is why the translations don't work globally. Urdu literary magazines are dying day by day. The authorities of government-run organizations (responsible for promotion of art and literature) are just doing file-work, and drawing their salaries. Literary books in Urdu have almost stopped publishing as there is no more demand of Urdu literature in the society!

Nowadays, literary books of great repute publish in just one thousand as the first and last edition, and even this small number is not sold at all. Some publishers are lucky enough to take advantage of the few remaining popular writers as they publish their works and sell them to the government that dumps the books in the stores of public libraries. Some wealthy people including Pakistani expats, retired generals and civil bureaucrats are spending money or using their influence to publish their books – often poetry or memoirs – to be known as a poet, writer, intellectual or power-broker in the society or history. Their concept of a book is just like a business-card (with a slight cost difference as a visiting card costs Rs. 1 while a book Rs. 10).

Serious writes are silent. Either they have stopped writing or are thinking to change their medium of expression from Urdu to English. Famous writers like Abdullah Hussain feel that they have wasted their precious time and youth in writing novels in Urdu! Many others say: "Better write in English rather than Urdu or any other vernacular language." The same is the position of the tiny group of readers in the country. They prefer to read famous Urdu 'fictionist' Manto in English.

Great Urdu language writers and journalists have started vanishing. Besides Urdu books, just look at the Urdu language newspapers and their deteriorating quality! The people who are now in journalism are not by choice there... they have either come for a typical passionless job (nokari) or have some political or other ambitions in the field of journalism! Thus the new generation is under complete darkness intellectually! This deteriorating situation of the vernacular languages, journalism and literature is evident in other parts of the region as well.

TV and internet in South Asia: In the early 1990's, the boom of satellite TV channels in South Asia and then in the late 1990s emergence of the internet changed the linguistic and literary scenario completely. A good thing: Indian TV channels in the private sector started using simple words which were acceptable for both the hardliner Hindi and Urdu language advocates. The language with minimum Sanskrit and Arabic words was a source of mental relief for millions of people in the entire region. This was a good approach of the electronic media to bridge the gaps between India and Pakistan. This opened a new liberal way for mass communication in the region.

The internet demolished borders and is developing a language of its own with a universal script—Roman Urdu! The governments in Islamabad and Delhi may be busy in rhetorical debates but the citizens of the two rival countries may be discussing their mutual problems seriously on the internet in typing Roman Urdu. Thus the internet is accelerating the people-to-people (P2P) contact not only between the neighbouring people of India and Pakistan but in all over the world too. After, science, now technology is doing miracles!

Urdu under the shadows of English: I've heard many people saying that Urdu is dying in India and abroad especially in the west where the new generation of South Asian diaspora is under the strong influence of English language. To some extent, it's true because English is being evolved as a universal language, and it's engulfing many minor languages of the world.

Today, Urdu is under the shadows of English (language not people!). So, it's necessary to make both languages friends rather than enemies! English is the official language of both Pakistan and India besides being the working language of South Asian Association for Regional Corporation (SAARC) and Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). Parents overwhelmingly want to send their children to English medium schools not only in South Asian countries but in other regions of the world as well.

According to UNESCO, half of the about 6,000 languages of the world are endangered to some degree or dying out. And I think English will replace most of the dying languages! True, the Japanese people have played a vital part in the development of technology, and they didn't change their script in favour of Roman script/alphabets. But, experts say, there is a violent flow of English words in Japanese language like many other languages of the world. A newspaper report says that 80 percent adult Japanese consider that their language is in disarray. Similar worrisome people are found in other technology-rich nations including Russia, China and South Korea. The internet has made the traditionalists anxious about their languages and cultures! They fear English language the most!

However, Malaysia and Indonesia have adopted the Roman script. Iranis chat in Roman Persian on the internet especially in Yahoo and MSN chat-rooms. The dialect of Persian, which is spoken in Tajikistan, is written in the Cyrillic (Russian) script, which is closer to the Roman script. An Arab cyber-friend told me that serious efforts are being made to make the Holy Quran available in Roman script as well so that new converts and all those who are taking interest in Islam get spiritual delight by reading the original Arabic text of the Holy Book of Islam. It means Roman script is not the favourite of the youth only, but it's also getting attention of the powerful clergy!

Many people think that their history, culture, literature, religious and intellectual assets need some extra measures for a better future. For these people, the 21st-century-version modernism – adoption of English language or Roman script – is the only solid answer to achieve their desired goal.

Yes, Mustafa Kamal Ata Turk changed the script of Turkish language from Arabic to Roman but still is not being accepted as a 'part' of the European Union (EU). But keep one thing in mind that Ata Turk acted in a dictatorial way! The Roman script has no fault for Turkey’s being out of the EU. The country’s militarized and faked secular system is responsible for that as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan's forced "jihadist systems" are being held responsible for the so-called Islamic extremism and terrorism. It means the typical bigotry of the ruling class has left Turkey in isolation or out of the mainstream Europe.

Without the collective intellectual growth of a society, if a government tries to make the people liberal, secular or religious at gunpoint, that will never work in the long run. Democracy opposes this kind of totalitarianism. Such an approach gives birth to social, political and economic turmoil in a country like Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

Roman script and cyberspace: New mediums and techniques say that traditional scripts and languages are no more the only means of communication in the world. New words and symbols are being invented and they are gaining roots in cyberspace rapidly. Experts say that in the past a script usually used to take centuries to develop to meet linguistic intricacies, phonetic needs and calligraphic necessities. That is true. But now information technology has increased the speed beyond the imagination of linguists and philologists.

In fact, Urdu's inherited script can produce and display its sounds properly and Urdu can be proud of having the richest variety of alphabets – 44 compared to English’s 26 – that can pronounce and produce most of the sounds. Urdu's own script is far more superior to the Roman script, no doubt! Yet the younger generation of Urdu speakers around the world uses Roman Urdu, which has become a necessity for the youth no matter what the self-styled protectors of Urdu ethos and the government-run National Language Authority say!

Today, a guy from Islamabad chats with another in Delhi in the cyberspace in Roman Urdu. Even though, both speak (almost) the same language but with different scripts. They can't read what they type in Arabic and Devanagari scripts. The Urdu messenger is alien to the Indian guy similarly Devanagari is Greek to the Pakistani! Moreover, those who are from the English medium schools or settled in the west, their younger generation can speak Urdu/Hindi but can’t write in the traditional Arabic/Devanagari script. Thus the Roman script is a blessing for such a growing population.

Roman script bridges the gaps and gives new life to Urdu/Hindi – the dying language! Still Roman Urdu is strongly opposed by the traditional Arabic script lovers in Pakistan. Despite this opposition, it's being used by most on the internet. As the Roman script is being developed gradually the net-surfers use it in their own way freely. A language without roles of grammar is a blessing in the cyber age! Popular Urdu websites, like daily Jang, have devised their own schemes to write Roman Urdu in the absence of formal alphabets and grammar rules. Policymakers should realize the fact that the Roman script is very helpful for those who are not able to read the Arabic script. MSN, Yahoo and some desi chat-rooms are working as linguistic laboratories for the rapidly evolving new language.

Confusions and the script: Forget the electronic media, mistakes of using Urdu words, spelling and accent are now common among the educated lot who have been cut off from Arabic and Persian, the roots of Urdu language and culture. The new generation prefers to use English in whatever way and that is good for survival in the changed world. Even those who consider themselves "people of the language" proudly, can't speak or write Urdu properly forget about their knowledge of Arabic or Persian languages. It's a dilemma and a major reason for the 'fall' of Urdu language and literature. But who is responsible for it? May be the rapidly changing time!

I've observed that some guys who are well-versed in Urdu, make major mistakes with the traditional script. I've seen a press release issued by a mainstream political party in which the Urdu word 'eisal' (eisal-e-sawab, prayer for the dead) was written with 'say' the Urdu letter with three-dots not with 'suaad.' However, in Roman Urdu seen, suaad and say are written with 's' so there is no confusion as it is in the traditional Arabic script. Therefore, to avoid mistakes and embarrassment, many people use Roman script. Among others, a very talented finance minister of Pakistan used to read his annual budget speech in Roman Urdu in the Parliament.

The Urdu language that people speak today, is alien to the classic poets if they come to Pakistan from the heavens or vice versa! Even those younger people who can read a book of Lahore-educated humorist Dr. Younis Butt can't get the depth of Aligarh-trained Mushtaq Ahmad Yusufi! There is a generation gap! The next generation may read the entire Urdu classics only in English translation if they wanted to read really. But don't panic! Time keeps changing!

Currently, English loanwords are flooding Urdu language. Translations of terminologies by the government-run organizations are nothing but futile bureaucratic exercise to waste public money. The new generation ignores the tasteless and difficult Arabic and Persianized terms/words which seem to the youth non-scientific and sometimes very funny! English words like benefit, notification, exchange, lieutenant, senate etc are commonly used in Urdu writings in the traditional script without any alternative or translation. It would be easier in Roman script to write such words without changing spelling or script. And thus starts the next stage of evolution of the language!

There are some Urdu words which are complicate and people are unable to pronounce them correctly. I’ve heard a Pakistani information minister saying: aatshi instead of aashti (amno-o-aashti, peace). Not only politically, 'America' is a puzzle-word in Pakistan linguistically too! Urdu language newspapers write it Amrika and Amrikah. The word 'desk' is often pronounced as 'dex.' Similar problems can be avoided by using the Roman script. To be frank. there are some problems alongside facilities in Roman script as well but they can be removed evolutionary not emotionally.

Urdu in the Cyber Age: No doubt, Urdu software is available in the market and are being used by all and sundry. Urdu email and cyber chat-rooms are also being used by many. Some government and commercial organizations are working very hard for a 'cyber Urdu' language in their own way concentrating on the traditional script. They are doing it like missionaries.

But, again, it's the duty of scholars, officials, technical experts and investors to give people the right choice to choose! I think in this era of "free market economy" and "merging" of business firms, it's the people who decide their medium of communication and ways of trade.

Publication of a newspaper in Roman Urdu is not possible currently but it can be successful on the World Wide Web, and certain Roman Urdu websites are gaining deeper roots in the cyber world. Globalisation is a state of mind rather than a physical object! The physical distance between Islamabad and Washington has never changed but the psyche at both ends is different due to globalisation of humanistic intelligence and sensibility!

Ray of hope: The internet is speeding up the disappearance of weaker languages from the human brain. No matter what you do, extinction of weaker languages and species can't be stopped in any sanctuary of the world! If we ignored the ground realities, then Urdu language may not remain the same even what is at hand today! We should be rational to make Urdu a language of literature, science, technology, trade and business not mere traditional poetry!

We should analyse the situation with a cool mind, and let the people chosse the language and script of their choice for communication at large. There should not be any 'scholarly' dictation or 'officials' orders to chose a means of communication publicly! Let the mind free to decide for itself! It's very important to save Urdu language as a whole not in bits! Time is going hard day by day, but still the picture is not that much gloomy! There is light at the end of the tunnel!

HABIB R. Sulemani has completed 20 months of solitary confinement and has entered in the 21st month but yet the Pakistani civilian government is silent. The human rights and journalistic bodies are also keeping mum due to the terror of the secret agencies.

Mr. Sulemani, a writer and journalist who lives in Rawalpindi, has never come out of his home since March 29, 2010, when the first attempt on his life was made, details of which have been given in the previous posts of The Terrorland group blogs.

Currently, he is using Twitter to express himself regularly. His personal views regarding the Pakistani government, as usual, are very strong especially when he talks about the military establishment, which, according to him, is not responsible for his personal suffering only but also for the miseries of the over 184 million people of the terrorized Pakistan.

“I write truthfully,” says Mr. Sulemani in his Twitter introduction. “Don’t follow me on Twitter, criminal ISI and MI will follow you in real life! But in tyranny, silently, keep an eye on MY TWITS FOR LIBERTY!”

Delusion of communism: Pakistan Army uses leftists as weapon

FORGET about Faiz Ahmed Faiz and his desi tribe, just look at that French public intellectual, existentialist philosopher and globally admired writer who refused Nobel Prize in Literature but played rugby with Marxism – the immature sociopolitical worldview! Yes, I'm talking about Jean-Paul Sartre.

Sartre didn't go to Stockholm to receive the prestigious prize from the Swedish King but with his philosopher partner Simone de Beauvoir went to Cuba probably for a political debate with the like-minded revolutionists! There Sartre sits obediently before an uncanny young Taliban-like communist warrior, Che Guevara. This is what I've seen in a thought-provoking black-and-white photograph and it appears that the warrior talks mostly while the intellectual couple listens silently!

I really wonder about the intellectual levels of the "brutal killer" and the "peacemakers" who follow almost the same philosophy of life. Others may ignore or glorify the characters in the photograph due to their personal choice or intellectual prejudices, but for any independent thinker, it speaks volumes about life and philosophy in the 1960's. That tumultuous era affected the lives of millions of people worldwide, and haunts many even in the 21st century when the world faces insurgency and recession due to former American president George W. Bush's mismanaged Global War on Terror!

Any ‘ism’ that considers itself final authority on political science and economy, invites destruction to the whole society. It often leaves millions of innocent victims behind who often never know the face of the real culprit. The tyranny of ruthless 'isms' is more painful than anything else especially for the intellectual lot. Unfortunately, in Pakistan, the tyranny and delusion of communism go parallel to the military establishment’s self-styled jihadism. Pakistan Army uses both 'leftists' and 'rightists' as weapons. That is why like the Jamaat-e-Islami chief Munawer Hassan, the London-based Communist Guru Tariq Ali also favors Taliban, the "strategic assets" of Pakistan Army. What a deceptive similarity!

Actually, the leftists and rightists are two sides of the same coin. The Jamaat-e-Islami chief was a former communist who suddenly became the Moudodi-brand Islamist. During Army Chief Ishfaq Kayani's recent meeting with political parties, Mr. Hassan showed the bigotry of both left and right while defending the Army and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chiefs!

When countries like China and Saudi Arabia are evolutionary coming towards democracy and free market economy, Pakistani military is not ready to accept democracy in this militarized republic. The generals directly through their illegal actions and indirectly through their stooges try to disgrace the very concept of democracy. And in this bloody exercise, they spend millions from the national exchequer of our globally alms-seeking Islamic Republic, which has about 100 atomic bombs in the stores of the Pakistan Ordnance Factories Wah Cantt, but lacks money for education and healthcare facilities in the country!

The good thing about democracy and free market economy is that they are naturally evolutionary not revolutionary; so the structure of both can be entirely different in the coming ages than what is being practiced today. However, the intellectually-bankrupt generals are still determined to live in the hotchpotch world! They neither fully support the Islamic system of governance nor let the democratic process get deeper roots. In the absence of intellectual depth, every generation of the generals keeps uprooting democracy due to the fear of loss of control over state assets. The generals are the biggest enemies of Pakistan who abuse the constitution and still pose themselves as the most patriot segment of the society. What a shameless creatures!

In our society worshiping of the so-called heroes still goes on unabated. Realism has become a fantasy! When one sees an idealist youth with a Che Guevara-shirt or a Facebook profile pic of the Argentine Marxist revolutionary, it's understandable! What makes Che Guevara – a brutal killer who was killed in the same brutal manner – so charming for a youth today? Some of the reasons are given below:

1- Che was a photogenic symbol of anti-Americanism for the so-called leftists during the cold war. So their loyal friends and family members follow the non-Muslim Taliban leader even today.

2- Those who still romanticize guerrilla wars – a common characteristic of rightist jihadists and leftist communists – for them 'Guevara' is synonymous with 'guerrilla' wars.

3- The brutal killing of the young Che compels people to forget his own brutalities and sympathize with him as people do with Baloch leader Akbar Bugti in Pakistan.

4- Ignorance is also a big reason! People don't know much about the history of the so-called Cuban Revolution. Communist Fidel Castro and Che Guevara were puppets like the Jihadist Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar. The earlier two gamers wanted to play in the hands of the neighboring United States of America (USA) but when there was no positive response, they became revolutionary communist-play-boys of the opposite camp, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).

5- What was the result of the struggle and sacrifice of Che? His boss Fidel Castro first became Prime Minister, then President and finally First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba. He ruled like a despot military dictator from February 16, 1959 to April 19, 2011 and the people are still poor. Similar to the despot Arab rulers, Castro gave power to his younger brother, Raúl Castro, and now the romantic dream of an "immortal revolution" of Che is just a family business in the communist Cuba as it's in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

6- The Castros of Cuba, Kims of North Korea, and Bhuttos and Sharif of Pakistan may follow different ‘isms’ but at heart they all are the same despot dictators who make the common people suffer to benefit their own families.

7- What is the reality about the revolution fantasy? The leftists in denial never dare to look at their chameleon-like posture in the mirror like their twins in the jihad business: the rightists! Thus the Pakistani military establishment, especially the ISI, uses the communists in denial in a glorified way using the leftist literature as it uses Quranic literature for the rightists.

8- The problems-hit new generation becomes a victim of intellectual terrorism at the hands of the leftists like the rightists! Policymakers need to come out of their utopian political illusions to face brutal realities bravely without playing with the future of the new generation. In this way, people would be able to elect talented leaders to keep political and economical balance in the society.

Conclusion: The Pakistani military establishment and its puppet political parties should stop playing their dirty game through the unscrupulous leftists and rightists (who support each other intellectually as well as strategically no matter it's in Afghanistan or anywhere else).

Generals! Don't you see the volcano within? If it erupts then there would be nothing left for you and your puppet politicians! Stop looting your own people and country! Have some pity on the over 184 million people of Pakistan! Stop the crimes against humanity to get personal benefits! If not then your jobs, businesses, huge lands and everything would be gone... Remember, when terror reaches the last stage, then it along the perpetrators evaporates systematically and Pakistan is in this last stage!

My countrymen and women! Listen to Arieb Azhar's amazing song and get back all the lost hope! These generals are gone, believe you me! Long live the people of Pakistan!

Global village — internet will play vital role in next elections

EXPERTS say the Internet is changing forever the way we think and share. It is affecting the wider culture even for those who never use it. It is not just a way of sending a letter without a stamp or a full colour leaflet without a printer’s bill. It can create communities of people, which are non-geographic and international. It can empower people by giving access to knowledge and information. It can remove barriers and bring people together. The Internet brought many new things and terms to the society. Terms like information technology, e-mail, e-commerce, cyber chatting, netizens etc are now in common use and many new things and terms are taking birth with the passage of time.

Pakistan has started a big and difficult journey on the ‘Cyber Highway.’ Today some 450 cities and towns of Pakistan are connected to the World Wide Web and more connections are expected. Looking at the discussions in the corridors of power, it seems as e-commerce and e-governments are evolving out of the tradition — almost all of the main government departments, organisations and institutions have now their own websites and the concept of "paper free office" will become a reality very soon.

During the 2000 presidential elections in the United States of America (USA), the Internet was used as a tool for electoral campaigns for the first time in history, and it is really amazing that within two years’ time it was fallowed in Pakistan, where in the general elections of 2002, some political parties used this new tool (Internet) for their election campaigns, and now are also using it for political gains. Indeed it is a big change in the approach of politicians and policy makers. From this point, it is crystal clear that Internet’s role in the next elections will become vital, because, the cyber community or ‘netizens’ are increasing rapidly in number.

Day by day, the Internet is penetrating deep into the daily lives of the people. Pakistan’s 70 per cent rural population is also joining the cyber world, and with the use of the internet ‘urbanisation’ is taking place rapidly, and the ‘great divide’ between the rural and urban societies is taking a new shape. Now, at least in the field of information, a ‘rural guy’ is not more equal than a ‘shehri babu’ or urban guy. The internet has made the world a ‘Global Village’ in the real sense. It has become an integral part of the civilised world. After food, clothing and housing, a computer set (PC) has become an equal need for all those who can afford it at home. Many people use it at many places to meet their needs.

Not only in Pakistan but also throughout the Third World countries Internet has opened many doors of opportunities. For the conservative traditionalists, it has made life difficult but for the majority, especially the young ones, it has provided a chance to achieve their dreams. They think it a blessing which has exposed everything to them. Many activists, religious and political leaders have chosen to use the net to help and strengthen their fellows or followers.

There were cyber-communities but now virtual countries have also taken birth. Thus a new style of politics has started in the world we live in today. Each day, more and more people are reaching out to join the cyber world. Our behaviour, everyday life and the entire sociology are changing at this primary stage of the 21st century. Thus there are many a great challenges to the mankind as a whole. The Internet has played a vital part making the people aware about human rights, peace, environmental issues, terrorism, and other social problems. It has provided a new way for businessmen to reach their wanted markets.

Once there was a trend to become ‘doctor’ or ‘engineer’. Then came the ‘MBA-boom’ and now there is the information technology (IT) euphoria. Everywhere IT institutions are mushrooming and big cities are special targets for those who want to make smart money out of this boom. Thus bogus IT institutes and ‘plaza universities’ are emerging rapidly. These fake educational institutes (without proper facilities and non-qualified staff) are making huge money as the MBA institutions set a trend for them. Thus half literate so-called ‘IT specialists’ are coming out of these institutions, adding to the unemployed lot of the country. Therefore, all of the changes in our society can’t be viewed favourably.

The Internet is both dangerous and helpful just like any tool or instrument. To avoid any misshape, social awareness about this new medium is a must. Copyrights and security problems, especially cyber crimes are emerging on the surface. After some unpleasant events, Pakistan has finally formed a ‘cyber police’ to counter heinous crimes committed through the Internet. It is said that recently some ‘al-Qaeda’ suspects were caught only because of their ‘cyber activities’.

Pakistan has taken a good initiative in the direction of information technology but there is a long way to go. Today there is this impression that the aggressive start of Prof Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman as a federal minister of science and technology has become slow now. This is a challenge for his young successor Awais Leghari. A failure in the field of IT will have dire consequences for the future of this nation. If the government wants to see Pakistan on the ‘cyber map’ of the world like India, then it should do some basic things:-

• The government must attract investors in cyber (IT) projects.

• Make sure that quality IT education is provided to the students who are paying heavy fees.

• Keep a check on fake institutions and the rule and regulations of the Higher Education Authority must be followed strictly.

• Telephone and Internet services should be available at every corner of the country and there should be reduction in the rates/bills. For the far-flung rural parts of the country, like Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan etc, there must be a special rebate in the bills so that the poor are practically involved in e-business and other cyber activities to change their lifestyle.

• The ministries and other government-owned organisations should maintain and regularly updated their websites so that there is a good impression on the visitors especially from foreign countries.

• Computers and other IT related tools should be available at cheap rates so that common people’s reach is made possible to the new way of life.
