Once I stopped straightening my naturally curly hair, I developed a routine that includes wrapping strands into two strand twists before bed to achieve the "perfect" coil in the morning. While it can take up to an hour for each process, I find myself getting lost in the rhythm of pulling at my curls. However, I'm starting to rethink my hairstyling strategy can have serious consequences.
Any action like twirling, brushing and twisting can cross the line from normal to compulsive, leading to trichotillomania, according to Elizabeth Cunnane Philips, trichologist at hair health-focused brand Philip Kingsley.
The extreme self-inflicted hair loss condition can start as innocently as hair twirling, perhaps while watching TV or studying, which then can develop into the pulling of individual hairs. It's much more likely to affect women than men -- with an approximate ratio of four to one. And trichotillomania is often present or reported soon after the onset of puberty, with the urge to twirl having deep psychological undertones.
"The sensation of pain creates a sensation that is one of exhilaration," says Philips. "Often times the patient reports a period of elevated stress that then spurred the condition. I have never observed a case where stress was not one of the presenting factors."
She adds, "Repeated and constant twirling and pulling can lead to frizzier hairs regrowing, and in some cases where the pulling is long term there can be follicular damage where the regowth potential can be diminished."
Of course, any advice that Philips offers is multifaceted as there are different levels of trichotillomania, from subtle areas that are not visible to the naked or untrained eye, to cases so severe that the patient hides with a wig.
"It is a complex condition that requires attention and must first be identified for what it is, and only then can the individual work on ways that help them," says Philips. "The idea is to create a sensation that keeps the hand away from the hair and scalp, and eventually helps to break what can become a habit."
Read on for her expert tips on how to control the urge to twirl:
• The continuation of any therapy that has proven helpful in the past. Managing any emotional and psychological issues is both vital and mandatory.
• Stress management techniques they can include everything from behavioral management to yoga.

• Identify individual triggers and set up way to catch those.

• Wear gloves while reading, watching TV or talking on the phone.

• Explore therapy balls that are often used for sensory therapy or rehabilitation post-hand surgery.

Do you know where the common Halloween prank of children knocking on doors and shouting "trick or treat" originated?
Linton says: ". . . certainly it comes from pagan times." In Ireland up to the turn of the century, it was customary to have a procession "led by a man in a white robe wearing a horse-head mask." ("The horse was sacred to the Sun God," says Linton, "which indicated that this custom was a survival of a Druid rite.") The procession levied a contribution from the farmers in the perverted name of what probably was an old Druid god. Unless the procession was "treated liberally with gifts, the farmers were "tricked" with the threat of a curse that would ruin next year’s crops!
This traditional custom of having processions at Halloween is further derived from another unusual practice. Wealthy churches during the Middle Ages, copying the ancient Greek and Roman religious processions, paraded the relics of patron saints. The poorer parishes could not afford to buy relics so they used caricatures of their patron saints. "Those who were not playing the parts of the holy ones also wanted to get into the procession and so dressed up as angels or devils. The Allhallows procession around the churchyard eventually became a gay and motley parade. (From page 103 of Halloween Through Twenty Centuries.)
The present day "trick or treat" is but a continuation of these degenerate and absurd customs which came out of paganism and have been labeled with Christian names.
Is it any wonder that children and adults wantonly damage private property—on a day originally dedicated to Satan, the Destroyer?

What is Halloween really all about?

Have you ever asked yourself, "Who in the world ever thought of the idea of walking around in weird costumes, trick or treating, and/or putting a carved-out pumpkin in your window?"

You will agree with me that Halloween is really one of the strangest days of the year, is it not? Perhaps you wonder how the celebration of such a day ever got started. In this pamphlet I would like to answer this question for you!

Where and when did Halloween customs originate?

The many customs we have today in relation to Halloween have their origins in the religious practices of the Romans and the Druids, therefore dating back many centuries. The Romans worshiped various gods and on October 31, a special feast was held in honor of Pomona, goddess of the fruit trees. Later, the Druids, an ancient order of Celtic priests in Britain, made this feast an even more extensive celebration by also honoring Samhain, lord of the dead. This was normally done on November 1 and it was therefore decided to conveniently honor both Pomona and Samhain on October 31 and November 1.

These Druids believed that on the night before November 1 (October 31) Samhain called together wicked souls or spirits which had been condemned to live in the bodies of animals during the year which had just transpired. Since they were afraid of these spirits, they chose October 31 as a day to sacrifice to their gods, hoping they would protect them. They really believed that on this day they were surrounded by strange spirits, ghosts, witches, fairies, and elves, who came out to hurt them. In addition to this, they also believed that cats were holy animals, as they considered them to represent people who lived formerly, and as punishment for evil deeds were reincarnated as a cat. All this explains why witches, ghosts, and cats are a part of Halloween today.

The custom of trick-or-treating and the use of "jack-o'-lanterns" comes from Ireland. Hundreds of years ago, Irish farmers went from house to house, begging for food, in the name of their ancient gods, to be used at the village Halloween celebration. They would promise good luck to those who gave them good, and made threats to those who refused to give. They simply told the people, "You treat me, or else I will trick you!"

The apparently harmless lightened pumpkin face or "jack-o'-lantern" actually is an old Irish symbol of damned soul. A man named Jack was supposed to be able unable to enter heaven due to his miserliness, and unable to enter hell because he had played practice jokes on the devil. As a result, he was condemned to wander over the earth with his lantern until judgment day (i.e., the end of the world). The Irish were so afraid that they would receive an identical plight, that they began to hollow out pumpkins and place lighted candles inside to scare away evil spirits from their home.

When did the modern Halloween celebration begin?

During the Middle Ages (about 600 years ago), the Roman Catholic Church at that time, decided to make the change-over from pagan religion to Christianity a bit easier, and therefore allowed the new converts to maintain some of their pagan feasts. It was agreed, however, that from now on they would be celebrated as "Christian" feats. So instead of praying to thwir heathen gods, they would now pray to, and remember the deaths of saints. For this reason the church decided to call November 1 the "Day of All Saints," and the mass to be celebrated on that day "Alhallowmass." In consequence of this, the evening prior to this day was named, "All Hallowed Evening" which subsequently was abbreviated as "Halloween." In spite of this effort to make October 31 a "holy evening," all the old customs continued to be practiced, and made this evening anything BUT a holy evening!

Halloween today.

You would have to agree with me that also today Halloween is most definently not a holy evening!! This annual event is far from the harmless, innocent tradition it is promoted to be. Many dread this "holy" evening as they think what could happen to them, their property, and/or their children! Consistent with its historical roots, this evening is charecterized by fear, and frequently arouses dormant fears in many. The fear generated by this event is symbolic of the fear which plagues so many in our moden, morally bankrupt world. It is a gripping fear for an unknown and very threatening future, a fear caused by a gnawing inner emptiness.

An alternative for October 31.

For many in this land, this day stands for the very opposite of fear!! On this day in 1517, a German monk and professor of theology, Dr. Martin Luther, courageously published the simple, straightforward truth of the Bible. God's Word, which he has rediscovered after a long and intense spiritual struggle. God used the truth of his own Word to give Luther the inner peace he had so desperately longed for. The Bible pointed him the way to God Himself, and when he found God through Jesus Christ, he found this peace which passes all understanding! He himself stated that it was as if he entered Paradise itself.

As a result of his courageous act on October 31, 1517, the Bible came into the hands of the common people again, and many, who as he, were deeply troubled by sin and it’s consequences, found peace with God as well!

It was God himself, Who used Martin Luther to bring His message of deliverance into the hands and hearts of sinners, in order to bring them back to Himself, and give then TRUE peace!! It is therefore with deep gratitude to God that we wish commemorate October 31, as it reminds us of God's gracious and mighty deeds nearly five centuries ago.

It is the Word of God, and its precious truth, rediscover by Martin Luther, which still gives true peace to many today. In the Bible ALONE will you find the ONLY answer to the deep yearning of your heart. ONLY when God becomes your God through Jesus Christ, you will find rest at last and you will answer to the true purpose of human existence, namely, to honor, serve, and enjoy our Creator!!

Is the God of heaven and earth YOUR God? If not, seek Him TODAY, while He still may be found!!

God, manifested in Jesus Christ, invited you Himself in His Word. Turn to the gospel of Matthew and read chapter 11:28,

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden and i will give you rest!"

Those who insist on seeking inner peace without being reconciled to God through Jesus Christ, will have to endure eternal misery without God. God does not desire the eternal misery of man and therefore He also extends this invitation in Ezekial 33:11,

"As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the deaths of the wicked (i.e. Sinner) but that the wicked turn from his way and live! Turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways: for why will ye die?"

DotA 6.72f AI is codenamed as "Nightmare". It has completely rewritten AI structure which adds Captain mode support allowing AI players to pick and ban heroes and tons of miscellaneous improvements.

Jonathan Mak Long Chris Thornley, In the early hours after spending last week Steve Jobs, a silhouette image of the founder of Apple placed inside the Apple logo from appearing on Twitter.

In the morning, a Reuters report gave credit to Hong Kong design student Jonathan Mak, but in recent days, several other artists have also claimed responsibility for the design.

That includes the UK-based graphic artist Chris Thornley, also known as Raid71 and resident of Los Angeles Farzin Adeli.

Thornley said he created the picture in May, while Adeli said he created in the first hours after the death of Jobs. But while Mak Thornley and appear to have recognized that it was likely a coincidence rather than an outright scam, Adeli has submitted an application for copyright of the image, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

“I personally created and designed the logo graphic on the evening of Wednesday October 5, after hearing the sad news of the death of Steve Jobs,” Adeli said the paper.

In a blog post, Mak did not refer to claims Adeli, but said the image of Thornley in effect, “contain the same idea,” as the creation of Mak. Mak, however, said it was stolen, and argued that he searched the web before posting your picture just to make sure that nobody else had done before, but found the contribution of Thornley.

“The visual connection between the profile of Steve and logo seemed too obvious to not have been captured at the time. Turns out I’m right,” he wrote Mak.

Mak said he did not apologize for “pulling” Thornley, because “I have come to this design on my own.” He, however, apologize for not responding sooner. He then asked people to contribute to a charity set up by Thornley, who is currently battling cancer.

In a tweet, Thornley said he “has nothing against [Mak], it happens all the time, he has been very good about it.”

“I started selling the image [above] on my website months charity is setting all the money goes to cancer charity,” he continued.

Ironically, Adeli is also selling the image and the proceeds will go to pancreatic cancer research.

As Techdirt points out, however, the debate could be up to three artists. “I guess Apple could void any attempt to register the intellectual property claims of these guys. I can not see how a claim gets anywhere brand like Apple, obviously, I could say that attacks Apple’s existing brands and would be a serious risk of confusion, “said the blog. Real jobs are also likely to engage in the use of his image.

Apple tribute logo a Web hit

When Steve Jobs resigned from Apple in August, 7,000 miles away in Hong Kong, graphic design student Jonathan Mak Long, "shocked" by the CEO's departure, did what he knew best: He created a design to honor the Apple co-founder.

The 19-year-old posted the image, the Apple logo with the bite changed to a profile of Jobs, to his Tumblr blog. Known as Jonathan Mak, he initially received about 80 notes on the image. Then word came this past Wednesday that Jobs had died, after a long battle with cancer. Mak reposted the homage, which this time caught fire on the Web, attracting an almost immediate response of 10,000 likes and reblogs on his Tumblr site and surging to 180,000 -- in one day. Comments included "awesome invention like steve jobs." One thought it should be the "new Apple logo." Another wanted to "use it as a tattoo."

Speaking in fluent English (which he said he learned from watching the TV show "Friends"), the Polytechnic University School of Design student told Yahoo! in a Skype interview that the image was a tribute to Jobs's contributions to the world: "I wanted to commemorate him. He's such an integral part of Apple. I thought it would be fitting to include him in the Apple logo." Long added, "With Jobs gone, Apple is literally missing a piece."

The artist was inspired by the uncompromising personality of the creative genius. He said of Jobs: "He had this vision that he was not afraid to commit to. That's how he broke new ground. His commitment and belief in himself is what inspire me." The designer's vision for his own work is an aesthetic that joins a simple graphic element with a richer meaning, giving the viewer, as he put it, an "a-ha moment."

The cyber tribute that became a hit, and along with attracting media attention, the logo found itself as the preferred profile pic on Ashton Kutcher's Twitter account and on merchandise featured on eBay. While the design prodigy has received several job offers, but he hasn't acted on them; "I'm still a student," he said. The artist has a portfolio of minimalist design, but don't call him an Apple fanboy. "I just got my first MacBook Pro a year ago," he admitted -- and he still doesn't own an iPhone.

Asked whether he'd gotten any response from Apple, Mak said he had emailed CEO Tim Cook but so far hadn't heard back.

Previous on The End of the Affair

While in Chicago with Klaus, Stephan runs into a vampire from his past, someone still interested in him after decades. In a flashback to 1920s Chicago, Stefan recalls a troubling chapter in his life. Following a tip, Damon and Elena follow the trail of Stefan and Klaus. Wondering what's happened to Caroline, Tyler asks Sheriff Forbes for help.

Nina wakes up in bed with Damon. They decide they're going to Chicago over the weekend to find Stefan. Elena looks through Stefan's diary to find out more about his past. Damon brings Elena to Stefan's old apartment where she sees the walls covered in names of his past victims.

Meanwhile, Stefan goes to a bar with Klaus in search of a witch named Gloria to find out why he can no longer create hybrids. She says that she needs contact with a witch named Rebecca, who Klaus needs to bring to her. We then see Stefan looking at a photograph of himself and Klaus from the '20s.

Stefan looks for answers. It turns out that Klaus hated Stefan because Stefan was involved with Rebecca, Klaus' little sister. They go to where all of Klaus' dead relatives are and Klaus brings Rebecca back to life. Klaus brings Stefan to his old apartment where Elena was. She hides just before they see her.

Stefan and Klaus return to Gloria's bar and wait for Rebecca. We flash back to when Stefan and Rebecca were hanging out in this bar, deeply in love. Then wooden bullets come flying through the window and Klaus grabs Rebecca to go. Before he leaves, he compels Stefan to forget everything that's happened.

Stefan leaves the bar and runs into Damon and Elena. Elena just wants him to come home. When they hug, Elena tries to sedate him with vervain, but Stefan is quicker than her and escapes. He tells Elena that it's over and that he never wants to see her again.

Caroline's father is trying to "fix" her of her vampire tendencies, so he won't have to kill her. Her mom comes with Tyler in tow to save Caroline. They bring her back home and Caroline and Tyler have a moment together.

Klaus goes back into the warehouse to get Rebecca. She comes out of nowhere and stabs him with a knife, payback for when he killed her. Klaus brings Stefan in as a peace offering and compels Stefan to remember everything. It turns out that they were a really close bunch. They find out that Rebecca is not one of the original vampires Gloria needs and it is a necklace that Gloria gave her, which coincidentally is the necklace Elena has on.

Steve Jobs, the mastermind behind Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac and iTunes, has died, Apple said. Jobs was 56.

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today," read a statement by Apple's board of directors. "Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

The homepage of Apple's website this evening switched to a full-page image of Jobs with the text, "Steve Jobs 1955-2011."

Clicking on the image revealed the additional text: "Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

Steve Jobs dies

Jobs co-founded Apple Computer in 1976 and, with his childhood friend Steve Wozniak, marketed what was considered the world's first personal computer, the Apple II.

Shortly after learning of Jobs' death, Wozniak told ABC News, "I'm shocked and disturbed."
Industry watchers called him a master innovator -- perhaps on a par with Thomas Edison -- changing the worlds of computing, recorded music and communications.

In 2004, he beat back an unusual form of pancreatic cancer, and in 2009 he was forced to get a liver transplant. After several years of failing health, Jobs announced on Aug. 24, 2011 that he was stepping down as Apple's chief executive.

Steve Jobs dies

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know," Jobs wrote in his letter of resignation. "Unfortunately, that day has come."

One of the world's most famous CEOs, Jobs remained stubbornly private about his personal life, refusing interviews and shielding his wife and their children from public view.

"He's never been a media person," said industry analyst Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies, after Jobs resigned. "He's granted interviews in the context of product launches, when it benefits Apple, but you never see him talk about himself."

The highlights of Jobs's career trajectory are well-known: a prodigy who dropped out of Reed College in Oregon and, at 21, started Apple with Wozniak in his parents' garage. He was a multimillionaire by 25, appeared on the cover of Time magazine at 26, and was ousted at Apple at age 30, in 1984.

In the years that followed, he went into other businesses, founding NeXT computers and, in 1986, buying the computer graphics arm of Lucasfilm, Ltd., which became Pixar Animation Studios.

He was described as an exacting and sometimes fearsome leader, ordering up and rejecting multiple versions of new products until the final version was just right. He said the design and aesthetics of a device were as important as the hardware and software inside.

In 1996, Apple, which had struggled without Jobs, brought him back by buying NeXT. He became CEO in 1997 and put the company on a remarkable upward path.

By 2001 the commercial music industry was on its knees because digital recordings, copied and shared online for free, made it unnecessary for millions of people to buy compact discs.

Jobs took advantage with the iPod -- essentially a pocket-sized computer hard drive with elegantly simple controls and a set of white earbuds so that one could listen to the hours of music one saved on it. He set up the iTunes online music store, and persuaded major recording labels to sell songs for 99 cents each. No longer did people have to go out and buy a CD if they liked one song from it. They bought a digital file and stored it in their iPod.

In 2007, he transformed the cell phone. Apple's iPhone, with its iconic touch screen, was a handheld computer, music player, messaging device, digital wallet and -- almost incidentally -- cell phone. Major competitors, such as BlackBerry, Nokia and Motorola, struggled after it appeared.

By 2010, Apple's new iPad began to cannibalize its original business, the personal computer. The iPad was a sleek tablet computer with a touch screen and almost no physical buttons. It could be used for almost anything software designers could conceive, from watching movies to taking pictures to leafing through a virtual book.

Personal life

Jobs kept a close cadre of friends, Bajarin said, including John Lasseter of Pixar and Larry Ellison of Oracle, but beyond that, shared very little of his personal life with anyone.

But that personal life -- he was given up at birth for adoption, had an illegitimate child, was romantically linked with movie stars -- was full of intrigue for his fan base and Apple consumers.

Jobs and his wife, Laurene Powell, were married in a small ceremony in Yosemite National Park in 1991, lived in Woodside, Calif., and had three children: Reed Paul, Erin Sienna and Eve.

He admitted that when he was 23, he had a child out of wedlock with his high school girlfriend, Chris Ann Brennan. Their daughter, Lisa Brennan Jobs, was born in 1978.

He had a biological sister, Mona Simpson, the author of such well-known books as "Anywhere But Here." But he did not meet Simpson until they were adults and he was seeking out his birth parents. Simpson later wrote a book based on their relationship. She called it "A Regular Guy."

Fortune magazine reported that Jobs denied paternity of Lisa for years, at one point swearing in a court document that he was infertile and could not have children. According to the report, Chris Ann Brennan collected welfare for a time to support the child until Jobs later acknowledged Lisa as his daughter.
There were other personal details that emerged over the years, as well.

At Reed, Jobs became romantically involved with the singer Joan Baez, according to Elizabeth Holmes, a friend and classmate. In "The Second Coming of Steve Jobs," Holmes tells biographer Alan Deutschman that Jobs broke up with his serious girlfriend to "begin an affair with the charismatic singer-activist." Holmes confirmed the details to ABC News.

Jobs' health and Apple's health

Enigmatic and charismatic, Jobs said little about himself. But then his body began to fail him.
In 2004, he was forced to say publicly he had a rare form of pancreatic cancer. In 2009, it was revealed that he had quietly gone to a Memphis hospital for a liver transplant.

He took three medical leaves from Apple. He did not share details.

In 2009, sources said, members of Apple's board of directors had to persuade him to disclose more about his health as "a fiduciary issue," interwoven with the health of the company.

He was listed in March as 109th on the Forbes list of the world's billionaires, with a net worth of about $8.3 billion. After selling Pixar animation studios to The Walt Disney Company in 2006, he became a Disney board member and the company's largest shareholder. Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

Analysts said Apple performed well during Jobs' absence, partly because he was available for big decisions and partly because his chief lieutenant, Tim Cook, was the hands-on manager even when Jobs was there.

The company has a history of bouncing back. In January 2009, after he announced his second medical leave, Apple stock dropped to $78.20 per share. But it quickly recovered and became one of the most successful stocks on Wall Street. On one day in the summer of 2011, with the stock hitting the $400 level, Apple briefly passed ExxonMobil as the world's most valuable company.

The BAU is called to rural Oklahoma when women are being murdered after being tortured with sulfuric acid. Meanwhile, Reid treats JJ and Prentiss with deliberate disregard as he tries to deal with their deception regarding Prentiss' fake death.

A man is speaking to a video camera about his normal childhood. It turns out he had actually a pretty rough one. Holding a dropper pipette, Cy approaches a woman tied to a chair with her eyes held open by tape.

At the BAU office, Reid is being cold to Prentiss and JJ, who is developing solid profiling skills. Garcia talks about trying one of Rossi's recipes and Morgan offers to give her a cooking lesson. Then Garcia presents the case. Two blondes were found in Oklahoma, tortured and blinded by acid.

While Garcia researches other murders involving blinding, JJ and Reid are in the field. Reid won't talk about what happened between them. Instead, the two focus on how the unsub abducted victims from bus stops. They wonder how he might have blended into his surroundings.

Interviews with the victims' families reveal they weren't wearing their own clothes. The fact that the unsub changed the victims' clothes is a clue.

Cy leads a women away from a bus stop after he sees his friends Matt and Lyla happy together as a couple. They want him to move in with him, and Cy is excited about the upcoming dance their daughter Tammy is going to.

As more victims turn up, the violence against them seems to escalate. The nose, mouth, and ears are also being affected, as if they unsub is trying to obliterate their senses. Rossi tells Hotch the victims were wearing clothes from the 80s, which also must be a clue.

During the profile meeting, the group speculates that the unsub is in his 40s and the victims remind him of someone who rejected him when he was a teenage in the 80s.

In a flashback, it is revealed that the team is on target. Cy recalls kissing Lyla when they were in high school and Matt laughs at them. Obviously, Matt got the girl.

Rossi asks Hotch how he is going to handle the team's inner-turmoil and suggests he give them a cooking lesson.

Getting ready for the dance, Tammy dyes her hair blonde and borrows her mother's dress, which is obviously going to lure Cy. Turns out Cy is Matt's brother, and he can't imagine that his brother could be the killer, even as Prentiss and Morgan ask him if this could possibly be so. Meanwhile Cy has a knife to Tammy's throat.

Lyla reveals that she did reject Cy in high school and then again, recently, when he made advances at her after finding out she and Matt might be headed for divorce. The killing began right after she rejected those advances.

Morgan and Prentiss have Lyla help with the case by leaving Cy a message and Garcia traces the call back from Cy. She asks Cy to meet her because she's upset that Matt got arrested for hurting Tammy and needs him to comfort her. They meet and the team confronts Cy, demanding to know where Tammy is.

Turns out Cy had Matt and Tammy and that he damaged Tammy's hands when she criticized his touch. He didn't do anything to Matt because he wanted him to hear his daughter being tortured.

Luckily, a surgeon says Tammy's hands can be fixed. Prentiss tells Reid so on the BAU jet back to Quantico. She asks Reid if he's going to Rossi's for the cooking lesson, but Reid is still hurt and says he isn't sure he wants to go. Prentiss apologizes and says she's also hurt and mourning the loss of friends.

Later, at Rossi's home, Reid shows up. He stands back at first, and then joins in with the rest of the team to cook an Italian meal.

FOX Broadcasting has teamed with Steven Spielberg Peter Chernin, Brannon Braga, René Echevarria and Aaron Kaplan to bring a new series, Terra Nova. In the year 2149, the planet Earth is a disaster, and most of the plant and animal life has become extinct. Scientists can't reverse the
damage, but have found a way to travel back to prehistoric times to save the human race.

Among the Tenth Pilgrimage of settlers in Terra Nova is the Shannon family. Jim Shannon, played by Jason O'Mara, is a loving father with secrets in his past. His wife, Elisabeth, is a trauma surgeon who has been recruited to join Terra Nova's medical team. Their three children join them on this journey: Josh is 17 and is not happy about leaving the life he knows. Maddy is 15 and is looking forward to a new life and a chance to make changes. Zoe is 5, and there is a secret involving her that could create problems for the Shannon family.

Commander Nathaniel Taylor warns the new arrivals of the dangers that surround them in Terra Nova. There are not only dinosaurs but other settlers who have left the colony to start their own. The outcast colony is led by Mira, who left because she disagreed with Taylor as a leader. The Shannons soon discover that not all of the danger exists outside the walls of Terra Nova. Some of the members of their group disagree on how to save mankind and some may even be trying to destroy the new world before it can get started.

Genesis - Part 1

In the first part of the two-part series premiere, the police raid the Shannon home and arrest the father, Jim Shannon. Shannon realizes he must take drastic measures to keep his family together after his wife, Elisabeth, is selected to travel back to prehistoric times to create a new civilization and, hopefully, help change the future.

It's the year 2149 and Earth is at the verge of environmental ruin. People wear special masks called rebreathers in order to survive outside, and families are required by law to only have two children. However, hope comes in the form of a fracture in reality. The crack is a portal to the distant past, and humanity has already begun sending people through the portal, to a new human colony called Terra Nova.

Jim Shannon arrives home with a precious gift, a real orange. He doesn't give an explanation of where the rare fruit came from, but he offers it to his kids. Son Josh starts peeling it for his younger sister, Zoe. Things take a turn for the worse when population control pays a visit. The family hides Zoe but she's found anyway. Jim takes blame for the violation and is sentenced to prison.

Two years after the incident, Jim's wife Elizabeth sneaks into the prison to deliver two pieces of good news. She has been recruited to Terra Nova, which means their family has a chance for a new beginning. The other piece of good news is a rebreather for Jim, and the device also contains a tiny laser, which Jim uses to escape.

Elizabeth, Josh, and his other sister Maddie are readying to go to Terra Nova on the Tenth Pilgrimage. Josh is leaving behind a girlfriend. Jim joins his family after strong-arming his way to the portal facility. He carries with him a backpack containing some precious cargo. He fights his way through the portal, attacking guards and rushing through the gate into the past.

The guards at Terra Nova surround Jim after noticing he brought a gun through the gate, and they're about to slash open his pack. Jim and Elizabeth panic and hurriedly open the backpack, with their daughter Zoe hiding inside. The Shannons join the rest of the colonists and are welcomed by Terra Nova's leader, Nathaniel Taylor.

After the speech, Jim and Elizabeth are brought to Taylor. Jim tries to take on all the blame, but Taylor's certain the man couldn't have done it alone. Taylor's aware that Jim escaped prison, but he doesn't care about the laws from another time. Taylor just wants people who are of use. Since Elizabeth was recruited, the colony needs her. Taylor assigns Jim to agricultural duty.

The Shannons are shown their new home, which is gigantic compared to the cramped apartment they shared in the future. Zoe is worried because there isn't a separate room for her, but Maddie agrees to share her room with her sister. Zoe is excited when she encounters dinosaurs for the first time, as a group of sauropods are busy chewing on the leaves right outside the fence near the Shannons' new home.

The kids are sent off to orientation and Maddie is excited to spot the probe that scientists sent into the past. She tells a disinterested Josh that the scientists were unable to find the beacon's signal, which indicated that the portal opened into an entirely separate timestream than the future they came from. Therefore Terra Nova can avoid influencing Earth's future.

Jim is assigned to do some weeding, which means hacking down a gnarled collection of vines from a section of fence. One of Elizabeth's patients suddenly turns on her, attacks her, and steals supplies and a gun from a guard. Jim's cop instincts kick in and he notices the man acting suspiciously. He captures him, impressing Taylor.

Josh blows off orientation and meets a girl named Skye, who offers to show him around. She and her friends take Josh outside the gates without permission. Skye and Josh end up near a waterfall, where she shows him some mysterious markings carved into the rocks. Skye says that Taylor doesn't want people to know that these exist.

Taylor takes Jim aside and explains that there is a splinter group of colonists who broke away from the main group. They're called Sixers because they all came to Terra Nova on the Sixth Pilgrimage. The Sixers brought weapons with them but their motives are unclear. The man whom Jim captured is a Sixer.

Sixer vehicles are spotted outside the perimeter of the colony. Apparently, they want their captured comrade back. Taylor and Jim race after them in their own vehicle, but things grow complicated when a few carnotauri begin hunting them. The chase ends with Sixer vehicles barreling through the gates of Terra Nova. A woman (Mira) climbs out of the vehicle, and notices a new face: Jim. She welcomes him to paradise.

The Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) organizing committee is glad to announce a major change for the Dota tournament. Dota teams attending the ESWC 2011 Grand Final will play on Dota 2 made available thanks to Valve.

The release of Dota 2 is planned for the beginning of 2012. The closed beta already started and the success of The International held in Germany earlier this year has demonstrated the huge interest toward this game from the players as from the community. It’s natural that ESWC wish move forward with the Dota community and the support of Valve to make Dota 2 available to the teams attending the ESWC Grand Final.

In order to put all teams qualified in the best conditions of equity and training, Valve will provide to each ESWC Dota players a Dota 2 key in order to access to the closed beta and practice the game before the event. Few keys will be also offered to privileged ESWC's spectators during raffle on the event.

The ESWC 2011 Grand Final will be hosted in Paris from October 20th to 25th at the video game show Paris Games Week. A total purse of $200,000 prize will be distributed to the best video game player.

Icefrog announces the plans on the DOTA 2 BETA!

We’ve been a bit quiet lately. As always, we learn a lot whenever we put something out and get feedback from you all. Showing Dota 2 to the world at The International gave us a lot of feedback to chew through, and the many recent forum threads talking about the information leaking out of the beta has added to the pile. After a bunch of thinking, we’ve decided to change our plans a little.

DOTA 2 BETA

Our original plan was to spend the next year or so in beta, adding new features and slowly growing the number of heroes until we reached a level of parity with Dota 1, at which point we’d release Dota 2 to the world. But the feedback we’re seeing everywhere is that people just want to play it, even though there’s still a ton of heroes yet to be implemented. We’ve also seen that the folks who are already in the beta are chomping at the bit to show everyone else some of the fun games they’ve had. So we decided our original plan was dumb.

Welcome to the new plan: We’re going to take the current version of Dota 2, which has The International set of heroes, and get it out there as fast as we can. We’ve still got some work to do in a couple of areas, so we’ll be keeping it invite-only for a (hopefully short) period of time. But there’ll be no restrictions on what players can do with it – they can release screenshots, make movies, shoutcast matches, write guides, publicly make fun of our HUD, or anything else their hearts desire. While they do that, we’ll be shipping regular updates with more heroes, new features we’ve been working on, and improvements on the existing content as we get more and more feedback.

What does this mean for you? It means it’s even more important that you get on the list that we’ll be inviting from. If you’re talented, you could take a shot at winning an invite in the GosuGamers competition or the Playdota contest. Once you’ve got your hands on the game, feel free to talk about it however you’d like – we’re excited to see what you’ll produce.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — It sounds like a horror movie: Biting ants invade by the millions. A camper's metal walls bulge from the pressure of ants nesting behind them. A circle of poison stops them for only a day, and then a fresh horde shows up, bringing babies. Stand in the yard, and in seconds ants cover your shoes.

It's an extreme example of what can happen when the ants — which also can disable huge industrial plants — go unchecked. Controlling them can cost thousands of dollars. But the story is real, told by someone who's been studying ants for a decade.

"Months later, I could close my eyes and see them moving," said Joe MacGown, who curates the ant, mosquito and scarab collections at the Mississippi State Entomological Museum at Mississippi State University.

He's been back to check on the hairy crazy ants. They're still around. The occupant isn't.

The flea-sized critters are called crazy because each forager scrambles randomly at a speed that your average picnic ant, marching one by one, reaches only in video fast-forward. They're called hairy because of fuzz that, to the naked eye, makes their abdomens look less glossy than those of their slower, bigger cousins.

And they're on the move in Florida, Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana. In Texas, they've invaded homes and industrial complexes, urban areas and rural areas. They travel in cargo containers, hay bales, potted plants, motorcycles and moving vans. They overwhelm beehives — one Texas beekeeper was losing 100 a year in 2009. They short out industrial equipment.

If one gets electrocuted, its death releases a chemical cue to attack a threat to the colony, said Roger Gold, an entomology professor at Texas A&M.

"The other ants rush in. Before long, you have a ball of ants," he said.

A computer system controlling pipeline valves shorted out twice in about 35 days, but monthly treatments there now keep the bugs at bay, said exterminator Tom Rasberry, who found the first Texas specimens of the species in the Houston area in 2002.

"We're kind of going for overkill on that particular site because so much is at stake," he said. "If that shuts down, they could literally shut down an entire chemical plant that costs millions of dollars."

And, compared to other ants, these need overkill. For instance, Gold said, if 100,000 are killed by pesticides, millions more will follow.

"I did a test site with a product early on and applied the product to a half-acre ... In 30 days I had two inches of dead ants covering the entire half-acre," Rasberry said. "It looked like the top of the dead ants was just total movement from all the live ants on top of the dead ants."

But the Mississippi story is an exception, Rasberry said. Control is expensive, ranging from $275 to thousands of dollars a year for the 1,000 homes he's treated in the past month. Still, he's never seen the ants force someone out of their home, he said.

The ants don't dig out anthills and prefer to nest in sheltered, moist spots. In MacGown's extreme example in Waveland, Miss., the house was out in woods with many fallen trees and piles of debris. They will eat just about anything — plant or animal.

The ants are probably native to South America, MacGown said. But they were recorded in the Caribbean by the late 19th century, said Jeff Keularts, an extension associate professor at the University of the Virgin Islands. That's how they got the nickname "Caribbean crazy ants." They've also become known as Rasberry crazy ants, after the exterminator.

Now they're making their way through parts of the Southeast. Florida had the ants in about five counties in 2000 but today is up to 20, MacGown said. Nine years after first being spotted in Texas, that state now has them in 18 counties. So far, they have been found in two counties in Mississippi and at least one Louisiana parish.

Texas has temporarily approved two chemicals in its effort to control the ants, and other states are looking at ways to curb their spread.

Controlling them can be tricky. Rasberry said he's worked jobs where other exterminators had already tried and failed. Gold said some infestations have been traced to hay bales hauled from one place to another for livestock left without grass by the drought that has plagued Texas.

MacGown said he hopes their numbers are curbed in Louisiana and Mississippi before it's too late.

The hairy crazy ants do wipe out one pest — fire ants — but that's cold comfort.

"I prefer fire ants to these," MacGown said. "I can avoid a fire ant colony."
