YYZ Fashion Magazine Launch Party!!!

I was invited to the YYZ magazine Launch party in Toronto at the "Ultra Supper Club" located on trendy Queen street West.
I brought my girlfriend Karen Along along, and as soon as we walked in we were hit with photographers as though we were actually someone famous LOL....I guess it was suppossed to make you feel important but for me it was kind of embarassing. Anyhow, the evening was a success for the magazine as almost anyone who's anyone in Toronto was there. My favorite thing I hate to admit was the free appetizers and Mimosas (champagne & Strawberries & orange juice). Other than that is was a true fashion schmooze fest.
with all the editors, fashionistas and wanna be's milling about.

Many of you may have been wondering what I've been up to....well the last two months have kept me very busy. I will fill you all in on my new MUSE ( Girlfriend), her name is Karen Constance, and she is "The most beautiful girl in my world".
We met through a mututal friend and the sparks flew, and we haven't left each other's side since. I started to photograph her right away, and trust me we have more shoots planned soon. This photo shoot is just a simple B&W shoot we shot in a friend's bedroom in the morning in natural light. I love this and cannot wait to see her with full MUA & Hair on location. Karen is not only a beauty on the outside, but has many amazing talents as well including break dance, singing, guitar, and she can even twirl a baketball one finger for a very long time LOL...(a talent that baffels me every time).
Karen is from an Island just south east of South Africa called Ile De Maurice or in English "Island of Mauritious". She is an exotic mix of African, Asian, Indian & has Parisian roots and family. She is an incredible muse for any artist as she is an artist herself. I hope you enjoy these pics and look out for more from Karen very soon.

I am proud to report two peices of my work were sold in the silent auction, at the LGBT Film & Video Festival this May 2011 in Toronto. My Shot of model Zuzia shot many years ago was chosen yet again, as it was in 2006 for Vancouver Fashion week. I finally completed an eight week business & marketing program and a 25 page business plan, something I've always wanted to do but never knew how. In any case I am now in the process of implementing the marketing and promotional aspect of my plan. It can be a grueling processing editing which photos to use for your promotional materials, as the artist you become attached top specific images as opposed to others.

In my opinion it's best to get outsiders feedback on this, and preferably people from the client base you are approaching. My target markets for the first half of 2011 will be glamour & intimate photo sessions for couples, and individuals for themselves or their partner. I had graphic designer create two different business cards for me, one targets couples, glamour & slightly racier more adult shops and advertisers (left). The other card I call "Pin-up Light", is the glamor and pin-up market for women who want to look sexy but not too over the top photo sessions for their partner (below right). I know it may seem like they are not that different but trust me certain shops may not want the place the more erotic looking card. I will also be creating post cards for mail-out in May 2011 to advertising agencies, and designers. Technically the rule of thumb in photography promotion is 5 post card mail-outs a year in January, March, May, September & November when promoting to art directors at Ad agencies & magazines. After well over ten years of trial & error in advertising & promotion, the most common mistake is to order large runs of 2000 cards or more. My advice to anyone who is either just starting out, or is trying to target a specific market is to order smaller runs of business cards & post cards.

This time around I ordered 1000 business cards of each of these designs, and I will be ordering 100 post cards for my target market of ad agencies in May. I have had several experiences with ordering 2500 post cards and always ended up using only half, as I hadn't pre-planned for the postage costs etc. Keep your target markets in mind, and order small runs. I order from VISTA PRINT.
They are a Canadian company, and I paid around $100.00 for two sets of 1000 gorgeous cards, and 100 post cards. Just some advice for you to keep in mind...Until next time

Toronto VS. Montreal....HMMMM

After three years living in Montreal, and spending one year in suburbia (Brampton, Ontario) I have finally found a temporary place in downtown Toronto. I've been living down here for about five months, and adjusting to the Toronto mentality has been difficult after living in a socialist free thinking society. As much as I experienced some really bad situations in Montreal, I somehow am finding myself missing the vibe and especially the actual city itself, and the open minded ideas of the French.

I think this is what initially attracted me to the city in the first place, but I must move forward and forge ahead (something I learned from my many grounded Virgo friends). In any case, I may still visit to book 3-5 day shooting/pleasure trips soon, as the city is incredible in Spring and Summer. Since I've been back in Toronto, I had the opportunity to attend an eight week business & marketing class, and completed a 25 page business plan. So, I am now in the process of starting my marketing and advertising campaign targeting couples, individuals, and advertisers that are looking for my sexy style of work. After ten years prior to moving to Montreal I spent many years being refused by modeling agencies as my work was considered "too sexy" or over the top. However, the world has changed in ten years and I am noticing events like "Alternative Fashion week" coming up, and even "The Feminist Porn Awards" being advertised almost commercially, WOW! This is great news to me, although slightly comical to me as I was shooting this popular style long before it was main stream and was already secretly publishing my sets in magazines like "Leg Sex"and "Naughty Neighbors". I had always hoped that Toronto would open it's mind to my style, as I actually moved here at the age of 23 to pursue my career as a photographer. After ten years of banging on the wrong doors, I think it's now my time to show my work to the right people. I have also realized that my stint in Montreal was not a total mistake or waste of time at all. Montreal opened my mind to different markets (nude magazines), tattooed models, alternative magazine editorials, and the French appreciation of my work. After three years living there, I somehow view Toronto very differently than I did before. People appear stressed, wound up tight, and down right angry on a daily basis. I didn't realize this before as I was living in my own world and putting on a fake face for years, which is a very easy thing to do in Toronto.
This is the city of anonymity where you can act how you want, dress how you want, and even create an entire persona that is complete Bullshit and no one seems to even notice they are just happy that you are keeping yourself and appearances up to par. Most people here literally run after work home and the transit looks like a rat race at 5PM, where on the flip side Montreal streets are littered with relaxed patrons hanging out at local bars, hanging on patios or in doors enjoying their favorite dining spot with a friend on weekdays. In the end it was a compilation of reasons that I decided to move back, and so far I would call Toronto "Predictable", "Safe", and there's plenty of business opportunity here as well. As for socializing well the cities couldn't be anymore different, but I will have to adjust and visit Montreal when I get the urge for the European mentality. Montreal VS. Toronto....Hmmm very hard to decide but because I don't speak fluent French I guess it's Toronto for me..well for now! Until next time enjoy your day,

Wow! It's been far too long since my last post. I have been busy in 2010 with so many projects and slowly building a new client base after moving back to Toronto from Montreal. I will be honest with you I technically only been in Toronto for a few months(since November 2010), as I was living far out in Brampton for almost a year, basically in hiding after my crazy Montreal drama.

Anyhow...I thought I'd update you all on my favorite projects including this amazing spread that came out in September 2010. I had the opportunity to work with yet again another amazing "Alternative Tattooed model"...and it was a pleasure too work with Jessica Violet. The shoot was set at the "Hotbox Cafe" in Toronto's Famous Kensington Market.

My Life as a Photographer in Montreal......and the Trials & Tribulations of Model Relations.....

After three years living and shooting in Montreal, I have finally made the decision to leave. Let's put it this way, when I first arrived in this province I was full of hope and optimistic about my work in a new city. I have been traveling to Montreal for three years prior to moving and thought that I knew what I was getting into. Well.....was I wrong.....the moment I arrived here I basically fell out of a U-Haul truck after a grueling 16 hour drive to Montreal, as we decided sharing a moving truck was a Great idea! NEVER I repeat NEVER share a moving truck as everything takes twice as long. After 16 hours in a truck 4 people in the from cab including the driver, and 1 cat in the front PLUS 5 cats in the back, we all could barley walk out of the truck.
When we finally arrived at our pre-paid "loft" we were informed that it was not finished yet, and totally freaked out. The "Janitor"(what we call managers in Canada) as they call them here put us up in a temporary loft and we all passed out. Well my stay in this temporary loft became about a three month hell ride as we ended up paying for pre-paid phone service as the "Janitor" kept telling us that the other loft would be done soon and never was, so I never actually hooked up a monthly internet service until it was. When we finally did move into our loft rental that we originally paid for, things seem to go okay. I went along shooting my regular clients, but started to notice a distinct DROP in my local customers. Then WINTER hit...and wow did it ever. This loft was supposed to be "Heated" and we basically spent 6 months watching our breath in the bathroom during our early morning showers. Models actually refused to shoot in my loft and I started to loose money. After the first year in Montreal one of my BEST clients that paid me nearly half my income when I wasn't living here, dropped off the face of the planet and moved to the states.
After the first year I started to seek out new photographic features hence my nude magazine submissions to major magazines. Well this too became a COMPLETE nightmare as well.
My partner and I started investing in large scale photo shoots involving a particular local model, that dreamed of being in the pages of Playboy. We spent eight months shooting her in themed photo shoots, paying for costumes, set designs and more, and working with her on a Royalty basis. After eight months working with her and pitching her photos to local and international magazines, I started to make sales of her photo sets and eventually landing her on the cover of a local magazine " Quebec Erotique". She actually had the nerve to call up the Editor himself and threaten him as her real name was used in the magazine. She had specifically asked me to use this name, this was unbelievable to me and totally unprofessional. Here is the Cover shot:
In any case, after this she walked into my studio and demanded all the photos on CD in high resolution to sell herself and of course you can imagine, I refused! After this I became cautious with the local models, and backed off any magazine sales for a while. As business went along I made many other contacts and in time the local models showed their true colours after the photo shoots were over. I eventually started shooting for a local magazine that's distributed internationally "SKUNK magazine". I loved shooting for the them in the first year, but after a few years I again started to notice models becoming problematic with the magazines contracts.
One of my most horrific stories was a shoot for SKUNK magazine with a local model going by the name of " ". She seemed to dabble in the erotic, but I thought she would do well in SKUNK and the clothing line suited her as well. Anyhow, we had an amazing photo shoot, and she received the clothing as promised from the shoot as well as a modeling fee, and signed the release with smile in front of the Editor.
when the issue came out she suddenly started calling up the magazine demanding to own the entire photo shoot on CD, and then told them that photo shoot was crap and even called up the designer in the USA to complain to them that she hated the photos! It turned out she ran a Pay(porn site and was trying to post these photos for members to view her...as well on the front of the site! This is Completely insane as these photos were specifically for SKUNK magazine and signed the model release and waver stating this. Anyone in this photographic industry knows that when you shoot for a magazine even if it's a nude one, you CANNOT re-use the same photos on a Pay site especially if these photos were an actual Fashion shoot featuring a well-known designer. After this shoot I basically gave up on shooting with local models for ANY purpose. Here's the Spread in SKUNK magazine featuring the designer and "Ariel Rebel ".
I loved the shoot, guess she had another opinion. All in all from what I have seen here is that most local models do not have an appreciation of Good photography, or an understanding of just how the modeling industry works at all. Whether you are shooting a paid modeling gig OR a creative with a photographer, this does NOT give you permission to access High resolution files for use on ANY pay site OR third-party sales unless the photographer agrees to it OR you have paid the photographer for their time. When you shoot a "Creative" this means that the photographer, the model, MUA's & hair are collaborating free of charge to gain Prints for their portfolios, and possible "Tear Sheets" in magazines to further their career in the industry. In Any Case three years after my arrival in Montreal, I went from making $40, 000.00 per year shooting ONLY 2-4 days per month to under $20, 000.00 and working a part-time job. WOW! hard for me to even say this.....I blame this on many factors, here are some of them:
- I lost my client in my first year that paid half of my income due to his moving without telling me before I moved.
- I had my entire studio robbed on year two, which included my brand new camera, new lens, brand new iMac flat screen plus my G4 Hard Drive, my cell-phone and even my Brand New light bag!!!
- After that I had to start working a regular job just to re-coup my losses, and then on year three while working a $10.00 an hour job just to survive here I was robbed yet again, this time someone copied my Bank card and stole my rent money!Seriously!

I have basically decided that my prospects are better in another province where there is more money, economy, and models (and clients) that understand the value of good photography and working with you as opposed to working against you. I will keep you posted as to my next move in my photography career when I arrive there, and how I will finally re-build my business after all I lost in Montreal......

After three months of anticipation awaiting an answer from Paul Raymond publications in the UK on my 16 photo sets that I sent for submission......Tada! They moved......
I finally got them on my e-mail apologizing for the long wait on their answer on my sets.
In any case another amazing learning lesson to NEVER EVER ship 16 photo sets or any amount of sets to a magazine publication without first getting someone on the phone or via e-mail to:
Simply confirm their mailing address.....MAN! I feel Stupid.....Oh well.....I am now free to ship them around to other buyers...I'll keep you posted on my next published set.

After working with some of my favorite top models in Quebec & Toronto, I have finally compiled my package of photo shoots to send to Mayfair. Boasting seven magazine titles and some of the world's most gorgeous models, Mayfair is the Playboy of the UK, founded by Paul Raymond the UK's Playboy and entrepreneur. I recently worked with the Sultry & Sexy glamour model Arielle Saint on a location shoot at a remote cottage in Quebec on two amazing photo sets in hopes of having my work published in "Mayfair". Early Work...My First Art Exhibition

From the moment I was given a camera from a friend at the early age of 17, I began photographing portraits which often led to nudes....I seem to have always had the ability to convince my subjects that they looked amazing in the camera despite their shyness, and after a few clicks of the shutter they would loose their inhibition and let themselves go.
This photograph entitled" Michelle" was taken of a good friend of mine in Vancouver B.C. We painted her body gold, and shot her in the natural sunlight in my west end apartment. This photo was submitted along with three other photos to the "Eros 5" Erotic art show, and all three were accepted. To my surprise the gallery jury also featured this photo on the cover of the Galleries Newsletter and promo to promote the show itself! Needless to say it was obvious looking back now that I was destined to photograph nudes.........

My Latest Muse........
Julia Von Marquis has been an amazing model and subject for my latest book project. After years of photographing the typical large-breasted glamour model, this alternative beauty has opened my mind to new possibilities of tattooed women with a darker edge. This shoot on the antique love seat was shot late at night with one light in her living room, and to both our surprise was sold to a major magazine and will published July 1st, 2009.
I love the work we have created together, look out for more of Julia in 2010.....

I had the pleasure of attending Vancouver Fashion week in 2006, and also having my work shown along with Canada's top 20 Fashion photographers in the "Not fit for Print" show....Here's the show and an interview with me at the end.....WOW! Did I ever receive a lot of press during this show! as I was one of the ONLY photographer's that had a nude photo shown....which was truly "Not fit for Print"!
