Ronald Tucker A Perfect Way to Spend Christmas Day Last night, after a good dinner, our reassembled-for-Christmas family sat down to watch *National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Unless you are from Afghanistan, you've probably seen it. It stars Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold, a bumbling dad, nostalgic with holiday spirit and hoping to create "the best Christmas ever." His character is really idiotic, but I couldn't deny the apparent: He was just like me! Christmas time has the same effect on me. It makes me sentimental about what sentiment is best spent on: friends and family. The Mastersons have a very traditional Christmas. Our house and front lawn are lit up -- not as brightly as the Griswold's, but bright enough. Inside, we've got all the classic decorations, the garlands and Santas, and a real Christmas tree. Above the fireplace, stockings are hung. And we have not just one but two enormously impressive miniature Christmas villages (planned and erected this year by Number Three Son, home from college a week ago). Christmas morning begins with a big breakfast, complete with Champagne cocktails and Christmas music. Afterward, my brother and K's brother come by with their families and we sit around the tree and exchange presents. This was always the highlight of the day when the kids were small, and it's still a lot of fun. Of course, it's an enormous production with a sinful amount of wrapping paper and cardboard boxes destroyed in no time at all. During the day, friends and family come by and more presents are opened, more thank-yous said, and more kisses given. Eggnog will be abundant. Bloody Marys too. At about 5 p.m., we will be serving dinner to the 40 or so people who will be milling around the house by then. The gathering will be very diverse, as they say these days. We are proud to have in our circle of family and friends Ecuadorians, Peruvians, French, Jamaicans, Polish, and African Americans; Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. I'll be in great form, smoking my cigar and serving drinks. K will do the hard work, getting all the food on the table. She will be helped by various friends and family members. Meanwhile, most of the men will be talking and drinking, oblivious to the work that is being done. At dusk, we'll light the lights outside, light the candles inside, and continue to enjoy one another's company as long as we can keep our eyes open. Late tonight -- probably much too late -- I will fall asleep counting my many blessings. I hope you do the same. A Little Christmas Assignment for You...* Sometime this weekend, I'll find an hour to review what I did in 2010 and think about what I want to do in 2011. This is something you might want to do too. I begin by reviewing my yearly goals. If I've been good this year, I'll be rewarded by seeing that most of them have been accomplished or at least partially accomplished. Since I review my goals monthly, I've already got a pretty good idea of my accomplishments this year. I know that my main financial goal -- helping one of my clients turn his business around -- was achieved. And I wrote and published two books. And I got my movie distributed. All of that makes me feel good. But I'll also take some time to think about what I didn't get done and what I want to accomplish next year. I try to limit myself to a dozen main objectives each year, but I often can't stop myself from adding more . Last year, I wound up with more than 30. Not a bad thing, because it gets -- and keeps -- me motivated. I'll also spend some time reviewing my contact file to remind myself of all the people I do business with, all the new people I've met, and all the friends I have. I make a list of everyone I should get in touch with in the new year, and I write to those people during the first week of January. The Language Perfectionist: A Wordy Phrase to Excise From Your Writing

Consider these examples, found online:

"Do you have to sweat in order to lose weight while exercising?"
"We have lied to ourselves and others in order to justify our actions."
"Glee, at that point, was about a motley crew of quirky teenagers trying to mold together in order to win sectionals."

In his new usage guide, The Accidents of Style, Charles Harrington Elster offers this advice:

"The next time you find yourself writing in order to... try deleting in order. It won't affect your meaning, and you'll be amazed how much tighter and stronger your sentence will be as a result. Indeed, you'd be hard put to find a sentence... that wouldn't be improved by the removal of in order...."

Thus, the first sentence above is better as "Do you have to sweat to lose weight while exercising?"

Nitpickers might quibble that the U.S. Constitution was written "in Order to form a more perfect Union." But language has changed over the centuries. Our founding fathers should be regarded as role models for political philosophy rather than grammar and usage -- or capitalization.

From The Editor: Until recently, a Ferrari dealership in Scottsdale, Arizona had a used 2009 Scuderia Spider for sale. The car had only 438 miles on it when the previous owner turned it in. One of the finest automobiles in the world, and the guy barely drove it!

What does this have to do with information marketing? Plenty.

Everyone knows Ferrari. The provenance. The powerful engine. The prancing horse. But someone plunked down over $300,000 for one and after a few miles decided "Ehh, it's not for me."

This happens all the time. People make a purchase and, for whatever reason, decide to return it.

Today, Bob Bly explains why, despite your best efforts, there will always be customers who are going to want their money back. Still, there are ways to reduce refund requests to a bare minimum.

But a product can be great and still be returned for refund for a variety of reasons:

1. The product does not present the content the buyer expected.

Every once in a while, for example, someone returns my copywriting course because they were really looking for instructions on copyrighting, not copywriting.

2. The product is in the wrong medium for the customer.

Though clearly stated that my written info products are e-books, people will order and then complain that they got an e-book instead of a printed book.

3. The product is too basic.

The buyer may listen to, watch, or read your info product, only to discover that he already knows everything in it. In that case, he may legitimately want to return it for a refund.

4. The product is too advanced.

Some of your information products may be beyond some buyers' understanding because the material is advanced and the customer is a beginner. This is another case where he may legitimately want to return it for a refund.

5. The product is worth the purchase price -- but no more than that.

Believe it or not, I've had products returned with notes that said, "This product is worth the price you charge, but not more than that." And yet, the buyer was dissatisfied enough to return it for refund!

The truth is that in today's business world, it's not enough to give the customer her money's worth. You have to give her MORE than her money's worth.

6. The customer decides not to pursue the course of action laid out by the product.

Most how-to information products help people reach a certain goal -- e.g., to start a new career or get involved in a new hobby.

After reviewing your info product, some buyers may decide that the career or hobby (or whatever) is simply not for them, for any number of reasons. In such a case, they will almost surely want to return the info product for a refund.

7. You sell an inferior product.

The sad truth is that a lot of self-published information products produced by independent entrepreneurs are of questionable quality.

A book published by a mainstream publishing house is edited by a professional editor. But many e-books are not edited at all.

If your information is sketchy, difficult to understand, or technically inaccurate... or your instructions are unclear or hard to follow... expect lots of returns and refund requests.

As a rule of thumb, your refund rate should be less than 10% and ideally less than 5%. These numbers tend to increase in a shaky economy, such as the one we're suffering through now.

Okay. So now that you know the reasons for product returns, here are some actions you can take to reduce your refund rates:

Describe the product accurately on your sales page. When the sales copy correctly describes the product, customers are more satisfied when they receive it.
Highlight and clarify information on your sales page that commonly confuses customers. For example, I find I get fewer refund requests if I repeat several times the fact that my written info products are e-books and not printed books.
Update your information products frequently -- at least once a year. If the customer sees a 2005 copyright date in 2011, he'll automatically assume that your product is out of date, even if it is not.
Control the hype. All sales copy has hype to some degree. But customers will be disappointed if you over-promise and under-deliver. It's far better to under-promise and over-deliver.
Make sure every information product you create is worth at least 10 times the price you charge for it.
Don't just tell the customer how to do something, motivate him to do it -- and the perfect place to do that is in the introduction to your info product. You want him to believe he can accomplish what your product teaches. And you want him to be eager to learn it.

Video games aren't just for kids anymore. From its humble beginnings with games like "Pong" and "Pac Man," the industry has grown up. The average game player is now 34 years old, according to the Entertainment Software Association.

And it is a very, very big business.

2009 annual revenues in the U.S. alone were $10.9 billion!

One standout company has been dubbed "a mansion in a trailer park" by one analyst. And it could hand members of the Liberty Street League who are following my recommendations in "The World's Least Expensive Portfolio" gains of 100% by February 18th.

Here's Why:

During the fourth quarter of last year, this company had one "major" product launch, and brought in non-GAAP net revenues of $2.5 billion.

It resulted in non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.48.

This beat analyst expectations by 7 cents per share, and the stock rocketed up 10% in one day.

Fast-forward to this quarter.

For the first time in 12 years, the company has two "major" launches in the same quarter.

One sold an estimated $900 million worth of video games in November alone.

Last week, the second major launch went on sale. It sold over 3.2 million copies in the first 24 hours!

Two blockbusters in one quarter.

But analysts are only expecting the company to earn the same $0.48 per share it did during the fourth quarter of last year.

I believe that the company will earn more -- and that we can make 100% on our money when the stock pops after the earnings announcement.

There are four reasons for my confidence.

One reason is the incredible sales of the company's titles during the holiday season. Its two blockbuster titles this year should easily outsell its one blockbuster title from last year, resulting in higher revenues.

The second reason is that the company has a history of beating expectations. It has beat expectations for three of the last four quarters, usually by $0.03 per share.

The company beat earnings estimates by $0.07 during the fourth quarter of last year, and with a huge fourth quarter this year, I expect it to once again beat expectations handily.

The third reason is the analyst expectations themselves. Not just for earnings, but for share price. Of the 22 analysts following the company, the median target price for the stock is $15 per share.

That means analysts expect the share price to jump 25% in the next year. Any bit of good news will send it higher, and next quarter's earnings announcement should do just that.

The last reason I think the stock will skyrocket is because it is approaching its 52-week high. It is already well above its 21-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages. To break above the psychological 52-week high, too, gives this stock tremendous momentum.

I believe the company's huge fourth quarter won't be digested by Wall Street until after the holiday shopping season ends and preliminary sales figures come in. Once Wall Street grasps the magnitude of the company's sales, they will begin piling into the stock and drive up the price.

When I joined the Internet Money Club a year ago, I thought I was doing it to learn how to market on the Internet. I had published 11 books, developed videos, and had already established an Internet presence. What I was missing was focus. I was constantly being distracted by my next big idea. (My son, an F-16 instructor teaching Top Gun techniques, often said to me, "Shiny object, Mother," as I veered off on yet another project.)

Then I read Ready, Fire, Aim by Michael Masterson. The book stressed the need to focus on marketing, and that led me to the Internet Money Club. After many years of working within the corporate landscape, my sense of my target audience began to shift.

Next, I applied the IMC's concepts to my original business website. I was already publishing a newsletter titled "Don't Look Down" (one of my many shiny objects), which furthered my agenda of helping business leaders identify obstacles to their courage and fight against them. As I began to build a list associated with that newsletter, I discovered that I could consolidate the lists from both newsletters. Directly due to the Internet Money Club's systematic approach to building a business, the shiny objects I had pursued for years started to make sense in terms of an overall plan.

By tracking response to my newsletters through the simple techniques taught in the IMC program, I was able to identify the topics that captured the most attention. Then, inspired by an IMC seminar, I began to offer free teleseminars on those hot topics. My teleseminars (on Bullies, Life's Scary Moments, Responding to Tough Times Effectively, etc.) garnered more names, more exposure, and more business.

As I continued to gather information, I aggressively sought out speaking assignments. My focus shifted from looking for paid assignments to building a bigger list, developing a broader following, and selling more of my books. With this change in perspective (directly attributable to the IMC), I began to book speaking engagements outside of my corporate milieu. I waived my $10,000 speaking fee and spoke for free in exchange for being allowed to market my materials to my audiences.

The success of these efforts confirmed my assumption that what I was doing could be applied to a much more diverse audience than the typical corporate client. And that helped me BRAND my work.

Over the years, I had created a comprehensive curriculum to help my clients handle tough situations and tough people. I had also written a book called Handling Critical Moments With Grace. Now, with an increased awareness of my audience, it became clear that all of my work fell under one umbrella: the idea that doing tough stuff takes practice. As a result of that insight, Practicing Grace surfaced as my brand.

I had found, as so beautifully stated by Rich Schefren at the ETR Bootcamp in November, my "sweet spot."

With the evolution of my brand in the brief period of time of one year -- through a program that I thought would only teach me to market online -- I found myself reinvested in the work that has been my life for 25 y ears. Harry Brown A New Year's Plan You Should Start Working on Now Eddie is a very shrewd guy. In 2004, while the real estate bubble was still inflating in the United States, he took a job I offered him to run a real estate development project in Nicaragua. He could have made lots more money taking on another project in the U.S., but he decided he was much better off if this -- his fourth stream of income at the time -- came from an economy that was independent of the one he was in. A year after he made that decision, things in the U.S. started falling apart. One year later, one of his projects went belly up and the income he'd been getting from it stopped completely. A year later, the same thing happened to a second project -- and then a year later, his third U.S. project (which had been generating big cash for him) was crippled by a series of negative events and died an inglorious death. Had he not taken my offer, he'd be dead broke today. But the Nicaraguan project continued to throw off cash -- more than a million dollars at last count. More important, it led to a bigger project in Panama that is giving him great cash flow now and connections for new deals in the future. This happened while most of his fellow developers were going completely bust. I've said it before, but it bears repeating. When it comes to your income, don't rely on a single source for the money you need to live. And you especially don't want to rely on a single source of income if it comes from a business owned by someone other than you! All over the world, hardworking people are being laid off in record numbers. You may think that if you have a profitable business or well-paying job now, you are safe. If you believe that, it's probably because you have bought into the government's argument that the Great Recession is over and we are on our way to a slow and steady recovery. I don't believe that for a second. We are still very much in a recession. What we've experienced so far is just the first stage -- similar to what happened in America in 1928. If you know your financial history, you know that the Great Depression occurred in two distinct periods, with a false recovery in between. That, I'm confident, is what we are experiencing right now. Our elected officials and their bureaucratic minions won't tell you that, because it is in their interest to lie. So long as they make us feel that the worst is behind us, we will start spending money (money we don't have). That is how they believe recovery will occur. But you can't recover from debt by taking on more of it. The government deepened our debt by $3 trillion in emergency spending from December 2007 to July 2010.. And it has done nothing to work off the more than $10 trillion in debt it had accumulated before then. The true indication of economic recovery is employment, and the unemployment rate has not improved at all in the past two years. In fact, it's gotten worse. Even using government figures, it is almost 10% today. But if you analyze unemployment numbers correctly, it is more than 50% higher than that. Our federal government is in debt, and most municipal governments are too. The debt keeps getting larger, and our government expenses keep going up. Nothing the Obama administration has done (and nothing Bush did) will reverse that trend. So in my view, there is absolutely no chance that we will see an increase in employment in the next year or two. There are still tens of thousands of businesses – and millions of Americans -- all over the country that are heavily in debt. They are all trying to hold on by clawing and scratching, but it simply won't work. In fiscal year 2010, there were 1,596,355 bankruptcies, up from 1,402,816 in 2009. In 2011, we'll see more. So don't count on your current business or job to carry you through. And don't count on Social Security, Medicare, or your pension fund either. Social Security is in serious trouble. According to U.S. government calculations, the program will be bankrupt by 2037. This year, both Medicare and Social Security needed additional funding from elsewhere in the government. Social Security required an infusion of $41 billion. Next year, Social Security will once again pay out more in benefits than it collects in tax receipts. And after two years in the black, beginning in 2015, its negative balance is expected to grow rapidly. Medicare is in even worse shape. Medicare will become insolvent by 2029, eight years sooner than Social Security. After 2029, Medicare will be able to pay only about 85% of its benefits (or less) from its tax revenues. And the program for disabled people will run out of money by 2018, two years earlier than previously projected! We are not through with the Great Recession. We are not recovering. I don't trust for a moment the government data that suggests we are. There is still so much bad debt that must come out, and still so many thousands of businesses that are on the verge of bankruptcy. Despite our supposed economic recovery, 58,322 businesses filed for bankruptcy during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2010. The year before, there were 58,721 bankruptcies, a miniscule drop of only 0.7%. Similar numbers are expected for the coming year. Perhaps you are thinking that your 401(k) will bounce back to its former height. This is highly unlikely, as a recent "60 Minutes" report made clear. As I said, employment is the key to economic recovery, and there is no reason to believe unemployment will decrease any time soon. My bet is that the official unemployment rate will be at 11% by the end of 2011 and 12% the following year. (And the actual unemployment rate will be six or eight points higher than that.) In my father's day, a person could expect to retire at 65 with a pension and Social Security benefits large enough to provide him with a comfortable life. I turn 65 in 2015, and this is what I'm counting on: Little or nothing from Social Security -- barely enough to pay for a cheap apartment and a diet of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Little or nothing from Medicare for my health care needs, because the system will have nearly collapsed by then. A stock market that is at least 30% lower than it is now, and a stock portfolio to match. It is even possible that my municipal bonds would be worth nothing by then, and that the government would be trying to confiscate my gold. These are my expectations. And though I'm hoping I'm wrong, I'm smart enough to plan as though it's going to happen. I'm not worried about the future -- grim as it looks -- because I am prepared. You see, about 25 years ago, when I first decided I had to be responsible for my financial well being, I made a promise to myself to develop multiple streams of income. I had a good job back then. I worked for a South Florida publisher who liked me and was paying me well. But I didn't believe for a second that he wouldn't fire me if his business took a nosedive. And even after I became his partner and started making millions, I didn't feel comfortable relying on that stream of income alone. What if our business failed? What if we got sued or scammed or both? What would I do then? I decided that, as good as things were, I wasn't going to count on my partner or our business to ensure my long-term survival. So I started investing in other little businesses and making income-earning investments. My thought was that I would create several extra income streams so that if one or two of them dried up I'd have another one or two to count on. It took a while to get the first stream of income going -- and at first, it was just $50 or $100 month. But gradually, it increased. And as it did, I added other streams of income -- and they, too, grew gradually. I now have at least a dozen streams of income, including: 5 separate consulting incomes in 3 different industries rental income from more than 25 houses and condominiums income from a public relations business income from a real estate development in Panama I spend most of my time on the business that brings in my primary stream of income. And in my spare time, I tend to these other streams and rivulets. Several of them bring in six figures annually. Several others bring in a few thousand dollars every month, which is still very nice. But I haven't stopped there. Recently I invested in: a woodworking business an art dealership a movie distribution business a home building business I expect all of them to be profitable in the next year or two. But the size of my total river is not important. What's important is that it is larger than my yearly expenditures. I can maintain my present lifestyle if not just my main income but half of my other income streams disappeared. This is the kind of financial peace of mind you should be looking for. And the time to start looking is right now. Christmas is a week away. And the best gift you can give yourself is a second income. It doesn't have to be huge at the beginning. But it should be something that can grow as time goes on. Something that can one day -- maybe sooner than you expect -- replace the income you have now. The main thing is to get something -- anything -- going right now. The current Great Recession will almost certainly last another five to seven years. (That's how long the economists I trust say it will take the U.S. to work itself out of the debt we've gotten ourselves into.) And though you can reduce your living expenses if you must, you cannot reduce your living expenses to nothing. But you can exempt yourself from this vicious downtrend by creating second and third (and more) income streams for yourself, starting with... To refresh your memory: It has low start-up costs, and it allows you to work from anywhere. And as an information publisher online, you can start out small and keep testing new products and promotions inexpensively. When you find something that works, you can "roll it out" instantly. You can "speak" to your customers daily (mostly through e-mail) and, thus, significantly increase (even quintuple) the lifetime value of each buyer. And the profit margins for this business are potentially huge. The Language Perfectionist: Tricky Singulars and Plurals

I was amazed to read this sentence in a major newspaper: "Today the criteria is simple: total unit sales."

Of course, criteria should be criterion. The first is plural; the second singular. And if you intend the plural, it's criteria are, not criteria is.

Most English words are turned into plurals simply by adding -s or -es. But a few words with Latin roots are trickier. The following examples of such misuses were found online:

"Social media is good for employees."
"People learned several years ago that data is more valuable than applications or hardware...."

The words media and data are plurals, and should be followed by are. The corresponding singular forms are medium and datum.

The use of media and data as singular is increasingly common and accepted. But unless the result reads or sounds awkward or confusing, it makes sense to respect the traditional rules.

Starting Out Big When You're Starting Out Small

When you're starting any business -- an Internet business, for example, with a new website and an e-mail list of zero names -- the thought of competing with the established companies out there can be intimidating. And if you're trying to set up a partnership or joint venture, the fact that you've just started can seem like an insurmountable hurdle.

That's the way I felt a few months back when I was getting into a business that was new for me: Doing commercial voiceover work. But I put into place some advice that I am always giving my clients. And it worked beautifully to open doors for me.

The advice? "Focus on your strengths."

I've got 25 years of public speaking under my belt, and last summer a client gave me the opportunity to do some voiceover work for him. The project was a success -- and it cemented my decision to get some coaching, become proficient in voiceover, and build that part of my consulting business.

Call it coincidence, but the day after I made that decision I discovered that a major conference of top voiceover professionals was being held the following weekend just down the road from me in Portland, Oregon. The only problem was that, to attend, I needed to be a working voiceover professional with at least a year of experience -- which, of course, I didn't have.

Why did a successful salesman walk away from a six-figure job?

It's not a joke, and there is no punch line.

It is actually the story of one Internet entrepreneur who, in his first 10 months of being his own boss, made $85,000 and realized that his true life calling was running his own successful Internet business.

His story is one of perseverance and triumph -- and you can read all about it here.

What I did have was 25 years of experience in business and marketing. And when I did some research, I found that many voiceover artists were asking business and marketing questions on discussion boards. In general, there appeared to be a lack of self-promotion skills in the voiceover community.

So I put my best foot forward and wrote an e-mail to the organizers of the conference. I explained that, although I'd just started out in voiceover, I had 25 years of international business and marketing experience -- and that I would love to attend, contribute, and share my expertise with the other attendees.

A few weeks later, I was voted one of the best presenters at the event, where I made some great business and personal connections. As a result of a referral from one of those connections, I've just completed a university-accredited course in voiceover with a top LA voiceover coach, and the skills I've learned have more than paid for my investment. But if I'd given up because I didn't have the "official" requirements to attend the conference, none of this would have happened.

When you are starting your own business, the business may be new but there's a strong possibility that you have at least 5 years of experience (perhaps many more) in a related field. And that's what you focus on.

Let's say you're contacting potential business and joint venture partners. Astute business owners, marketers, and e-mail list owners are always looking for new ideas to captivate their customers. So if you can bring something fresh and relevant to the table, you improve your chances of working with them.

Look for something in your experience that you can apply. If, for example, you are starting an investment newsletter and have 15 years of experience as a successful trader, that 15 years of experience is your strength. If you're starting a website to show the best trout fishing locations in Oregon and you've been trout fishing for the last 35 years, focus on those 35 years.

In other words, find something in your experience that will be useful to the people you want to connect with -- whether they're potential partners or customers. (For me, it was that the voiceover community needed strong marketing and promotional skills.)

A side benefit of starting a new venture while "piggybacking" on your existing strengths is that you quickly gain credibility. (I gained immediate implied credibility at the voiceover conference because of my depth of experience in marketing.)

Kicking off a new venture in this way will help you overcome any resistance based on your being too "new."

A Funambulist (fyoo-NAM-byuh-list) -- from the Latin for "rope" + "walk" -- is a tightrope walker. The word can also be used figuratively to describe someone who is mentally agile or able to walk a fine line between two opposing viewpoints.

Example (as used by Grant Whitney Harvey in The Huffington Post): "It's an extraordinary quality bartenders have; a bar or, in this case, a lounge, can be quite adverse and hectic and easily become chaotic, yet bartenders -- good bartenders, that is, go about the storm of hands and impatient glares and fidgets with a frightful calm, riding a teetering wire between cordiality of social obligation and quickness and precision of hand with the balance of a world-class funambulist."
