A new market intelligence report says that Samsung is now trying to adopt Apple’s strategy of focusing on premium sales and the ecosystem. However, it says competing with the iPhone won’t be easy …

The launch event will take place in China, which means buyers in India should not be excited yet. The S17 series is expected to bring major upgrades over the S16 series. Even though Vivo launched the junior-most Vivo S17e a few days back, a full-fledged series is coming later this month.

In teasers posted on Weibo, Vivo revealed the design of the S17 Pro, which is similar to recently-launched V-series phones. The S17 Pro will be the higher-end phone in the series that will exist alongside the vanilla S17. The differences between the Vivo S17 and S17 Pro will be only so many, according to reports.

Expected Vivo S17 and S17 Pro specifications

While Vivo has revealed only so much about the S17 duo. But rumours are rife that these will be good mid-range phones, at least on paper. The S17 and S17 Pro may come with a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with curved edges and a Full-HD+ resolution. It will also support a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and an embedded fingerprint sensor. While you will find similar displays on both models, the processors will be different.

According to reports, the Vivo S17 will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 782 processor, while the S17 Pro will rock a MediaTek Dimensity 8200 chipset. The vanilla model may come with RAM options of 8GB and 12GB, alongside 128GB and 256GB of internal storage options. The S17 Pro, on the other hand, may come with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. On the back of the Vivo S17, you may find a 64MP camera with support for optical image stabilisation (OIS). On the other hand, the S17 Pro may come with a 50MP camera with OIS. Both phones may use a 50MP camera for selfies and video calls.

The Vivo S17 may feature a 4500mAh battery with support for 66W fast charging. The higher model S17 Pro may come with a bigger battery of 4600mAh capacity with a better charging speed of 80W.

According to the company, the FBAR filters will be designed and built in several key American manufacturing and technology hubs, including Fort Collins, Colorado, where Broadcom has a major facility.

Moreover, the company said that Apple already helps support more than 1,100 jobs in Broadcom’s Fort Collins FBAR filter manufacturing facility, and the partnership will enable Broadcom to continue to invest in critical automation projects and upskilling with technicians and engineers.

Across the country, Apple supports more than 2.7 million jobs through direct employment, developer jobs in the thriving iOS app economy, and spending with more than 9,000 US suppliers and manufacturers of all sizes in all 50 states across dozens of sectors.

The smartphone comes with a vegan leather back, a 144Hz 3D Curved display, and a new Dimensity chipset.

The Motorola Edge 40 5G comes in the mid-range segment starting at under Rs 30,000. Let’s take a look at its details.

Motorola Edge 40 5G price in India, colors, and availability

The Motorola Edge 40 5G starts at Rs 29,999 for the 8GB + 256GB storage variant. Motorola is offering Rs 2,000 additional bump up for exchange taking the price down to Rs 27,999.

There’s also a No Cost EMI option of up to 6 months on HDFC, SBI, ICICI, and Axis bank cards. It starts from Rs 5,000 per month.

The smartphone comes in Eclipse Black, Nebula Green, and Lunar Blue color options. The first sale is scheduled for May 30 on Flipkart and authorized retail stores in India.

Motorola Edge 40 5G: What does it offer?

The Motorola Edge 40 5G comes quite a few improvements. It boasts a vegan leather back finish that may help you get a good grip over the phone. This finish is only for selected colors.

The device sports a 6.55-inch punch-hole display with an FHD+ resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. It’s an OLED panel that’s curved from the sides. Motorola calls it a 3D curved panel. Interestingly, the edges will light up when calls or SMS hit the device.

The screen also doubles up as an in-display fingerprint scanner offering added security. Furthermore, the display has a 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut, 1200 nits of brightness, and an HDR10 certification.

In terms of cameras, the Edge 40 5G goes with a simple dual camera system on the back as opposed to the predecessor’s triple camera setup. However, the setup holds only useful sensors like a 50MP main lens and a 13MP ultra-wide lens.

Now, the main lens on the phone has 2-micron ultra-pixel technology, OIS support, and an aperture of f/1.4. The 13MP secondary camera can take 120-degree wide shots. There’s a 32MP camera on the front for clicking selfies and doing video calls.

What’s powering the device is the new MediaTek Dimensity 8020 SoC. It’s an octa-core chipset that has Mali G77 MC9 GPU. The device has 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage.

As for the battery, the device packs a 4,400mAh cell with 68W wired and 15W wireless fast charging. Lastly, the 5G phone boots on Android 13 OS out of the box and has MyUx skin on top.

Now, to save its users from this embarrassment, WhatsApp, which has over 2.24 billion monthly active users worldwide as of January 2023, is rolling out the “Edit Messages” feature on its platform. This feature will allow users to edit their messages within 15 minutes of sending them.

The idea isn’t new. Apps such as Signal, Telegram and iMessage have long allowed users to edit their mistyped messages. But the rollout of the edit feature on the world’s most popular chat app is certainly good news. However, WhatsApp falls short of some functionalities related to the edit feature when compared with rivals.

The likes of Telegram and Signal show an “Edited” tag for the edited messages to help receivers know that the messages they have received have been edited. WhatsApp also shows the same edited tag on the edited messages, but it does not keep a log of edited messages, which means receivers can’t see what edits have been made by the senders.

If you can overlook that, the edit feature is likely to become super handy. For instance, if you have mistyped ‘Ma’am’ as ‘Maa’, you don’t need to write an elaborate message explaining to them what you meant. You can just use the edit feature on WhatsApp to correct the mistyped message and save yourself from embarrassment. And this is how it is done.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to use the “Edit Messages” feature on WhatsApp.

A step-by-step guide on how to use the “Edit Messages” feature on WhatsApp for Android

Step 1: Long press on the mistyped message.

Step 2: Tap on the Three-dot menu.

Step 3: Select Edit from the drop-down menu.

Step 4: Rewrite your message and tap the tick mark.

A step-by-step guide on how to use the “Edit Messages” feature on WhatsApp for iOS

Step 1: Long press on the mistyped message.

Step 2: Select Edit from the drop-down menu.

Step 3: Rewrite your message and tap done.

It is worth noting that users can re-edit edited messages within the 15-minute.

Upcoming features

Meanwhile, WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp plans to introduce a “New Sticker” option within the chat share action sheet. This feature will allow users to select a photo from their library and edit it with tools such as the ability to remove the background. A screenshot of the feature in development shared by the blog site shows that the new tool will appear at the bottom of the chat share action sheet.

In addition to this, the report says that the new feature will save users from downloading third-party applications. It will allow users to experiment with a more native experience while creating stickers.

Online gaming companies will be required to deduct taxes at source if players claim their net winnings, including bonuses or incentives, according to guidelines issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

However, bonuses or incentives will not be taxed if they are not claimed or withdrawn, the agency said. That means if you use these bonuses or incentives further for playing, they will not be liable for tax deducted at source, better known as TDS.

Online gaming companies will also not be required to deduct taxes on winnings withdrawn by a player if the amount is less than Rs 100 ($1.22) a month. TDS will also not be applicable if the balance in the user account at the time of deduction is not sufficient to carry out the tax deduction.

Net winnings will be calculated by subtracting the amount withdrawn by a customer from the sum total of deposits in the account and opening balance at the beginning of the year.

The net winnings of a player on online gaming platforms are currently taxed at 30 percent. The latest clarification is a part of guidelines on TDS provisions on income earned through online games. The new tax rule on online gaming, which came into effect on April 1, makes a user liable to pay taxes on eligible earned money. But the onus is on the online gaming intermediary, which has to deduct taxes in a financial year, provided the player falls under the eligible category.

CBDT further clarified that deposits in games such as coins, vouchers, and coupons will be treated as taxable as soon as the player prompts a withdrawal from the system. But as long as this deposit is carried forward in the game as part of playing, there will be no tax. Moreover, if a user borrows the money and deposits it in their account, the sum will not be liable for a tax deduction. Only the money earned through winning will be.

Scammers post attractive jobs on different social media platforms to lure people. Since it is hard to check the authenticity of these job posts, people looking for work often fall victim to these frauds.

To help job seekers verify a post related to a job before applying, LinkedIn has started a new initiative, which will help them safely guide through their job searches on the platform. The Microsoft-owned platform has started to show verifications related to a job post. Verifications on LinkedIn will show important information about job posters or their company.

“We’ll now start to show verifications related to a job post, displaying verified information about a job poster, or their company,” LinkedIn said in a blog post.

What this means for job seekers and job posters

When a job seeker sees verifications on job posts, this means that the information has been verified as authentic by the job poster, LinkedIn or one of LinkedIn’s partners. The verified information will include information on whether the job poster is “affiliated with an official company page, has verified their work email or workplace, or their government ID was verified through CLEAR.”

These verifications on LinkedIn will have a dual benefit. They will help people looking for work to trust that the job posts are genuine, and they will also help employers to establish credibility with potential candidates. These verifications have started rolling out and verification tools are available for free. Jobseekers will see these verifications across job posts as LinkedIn will expand access to these tools.

This update has come a few months after LinkedIn rolled out an “About this profile” overview. This profile overview shows “when a profile was created and last updated” including “whether the member has verified a phone number and/or work email associated with their account.”

What else?

LinkedIn has also started a “Message warning” to alert users on the platform if a message includes “high-risk content that could impact your security.” For instance, if a message asks a user to take the conversation to another platform, LinkedIn will alert users and give them the option to report the content. The sender will not know that their message has been reported.

Meanwhile, LinkedIn has started testing its generative AI-powered tool to help its premium subscriber write personalised messages to hire managers. Generative AI will use information from the user’s profile, the hiring manager’s profile, the job description, and the company of interest to create a personalised message.

Two days after Krafton announced it has secured the Indian government’s approval, Google has relisted the popular battle royale. That marks the relaunch of BGMI. However, iPhone users may have to wait as Apple has still not brought back BGMI to the App Store.

Last year, the government ordered both Google and Apple to delist Battlegrounds Mobile India after it found the app was prejudicial to the country’s sovereignty. The immediate ban, however, did not include orders to the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) to block server access to the game. But for what it is worth, the ban suspended future updates to the game since it was no longer available on app marketplaces. The return of the game makes it accessible far and wide.

BGMI is not available for everyone yet

Battlegrounds Mobile India’s listing on the Google Play Store is about 735MB in size and would require the installation of additional files. However, it was not visible to everyone at the time of writing. The developer account on the Play Store also does not show Battlegrounds Mobile India, so it is possible that the battle royale is headed for an incremental rollout across the country. This means it is available to some users before a wider rollout takes place. Krafton has not specified any details about the rollout.

BGMI is on a trial

Last week, the South Korean company, which took the reins of its smash-hit battle royale in 2020 after PUBG Mobile faced a ban in India, said it is “a responsible South Korean organisation that abides by the law and has put in place several measures to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.” While Krafton did not mention what it has done as part of its efforts to comply with Indian law, reports are rife that the latest version of Battlegrounds Mobile India comes with green-coloured spills turned on by default and a timer to stop prolonged gaming.

“We work tirelessly to ensure that India takes the lead in this domain by embracing innovative practices in collaboration with the gaming ecosystem to support, sustain and promote its growth,” Vibhor Kukreti, Head of Government Affairs, Krafton India said.

But BGMI’s return is subject to a three-month probation, as well as certain conditions. Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday clarified that the final decision to allow the mobile game Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) to return to the country will only be taken after three months of a strict trial of the game. The minister said that the government will keep a close watch on other issues of “user harm, addiction, etc in the next three months before a final decision is taken.” “This is a three-month trial approval of BGMI after it has complied with issues of server locations and data security, etc,” he said in a tweet.

“UPI has emerged as the preferred payment mode of the citizens and has recorded 886.3 crore digital payment transactions with the value of Rs 14.15 lakh crore in April 2023.”

“The increase in digital transactions in India’s economy has provided numerous benefits for growth. It promotes financial inclusions, enhances transparency in government systems, fosters innovation, and provides valuable data for informed decision-making. Overall it strengthens the economy and drives sustainable growth,” noted the press release.

In other news, UPI is expanding and reaching more places as new UPI-supported Credit Cards emerge. Recently, Paytm in partnership with SBI and NPCI launched the Paytm SBI Credit Card that supports UPI transactions.

What this means is that you can add your Credit Card for UPI transactions for quicker and more convenient payments.

Furthermore, Japan’s Digital Miniter Kono Taro confirmed that Japan is mulling over joining India’s UPI system.

“We are now seriously thinking about joining Indian UPI, the payments system and also, we are contemplating how we can mutually recognize e-ID, for well – starting with cooperation, so we can increase interoperability, said Taro.

Sometime back, UPI Lite was introduced and it’s now available on Paytm. For the unversed, UPI Lite is for small-value transactions of up to Rs 2,000.

Interestingly, UPI Lite is said to never fail since there’s no need of inputting your UPI Pin or any other details for doing transactions.

The company has listed the iQOO Z7s on the website with its price and specifications, so maybe it is not planning for a grand announcement. Anyway, the new iQOO Z7s is now available to buy in India.

Launched in March earlier this year, the iQOO Z7s brings an interesting mix of features and specifications. The phone looks very similar to the iQOO Z7, so anyone who finds that design appealing can get it for less. The iQOO Z7s also borrows major specifications from the vanilla model. Before I talk about those, let us get the price details out of our way first.

iQOO Z7s price in India

The new iQOO Z7s comes in two configurations. The one with 6GB of RAM costs Rs 18,999 and the one with 8GB of RAM is priced at Rs 19,999. It will be available on iQOO’s online store and Amazon, and if you buy the phone from the latter, you can get the iQOO Z7s for as low as Rs 17,499. The iQOO Z7s comes in Pacific Night and Norway Blue colours.

iQOO Z7s specifications

The new iQOO Z7s features a 6.38-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 90Hz, a touch sampling rate of 360Hz, and a peak brightness of 1300 nits. The display also has an embedded fingerprint sensor. Powering the iQOO Z7s is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor with up to 8GB of RAM, which you can expand up to 8GB virtually. The display also has a punch-hole, inside which is a 16MP front-facing camera.

On the back of the iQOO Z7s, there is a 64MP main camera that supports optical image stabilisation (OIS) and a 2MP portrait camera, assisted by an LED flash. The phone runs Funtouch OS 13, which is based on the Android 13 operating system. The iQOO Z7s packs a 4500mAh battery with support for 44W fast charging. As for connectivity, the iQOO Z7s has dual 5G standby, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, a USB-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The video WhatsApp shared on Twitter shows typos in different words in different languages, followed by edits to correct their spelling. Without mentioning what this feature would be called, WhatsApp has confirmed the ability to edit messages.

Even though the Meta-owned app has not divulged any details, WABetaInfo, which keeps track of WhatsApp-related developments, previously spotted the edit feature in beta versions of both Android and iOS apps. The WhatsApp for iOS 23.6.0.74 beta app reportedly featured the ability to edit messages.

Folks at WABetaInfo found that the edit feature allowed users a window of 15 minutes to make edits to sent messages. Once the duration is over, editing messages will not be possible. The edit messages functionality is time-bound like the delete messages feature. During the first 15 minutes, users will be able to make as many edits as possible. To access the option, a long tap or double tap will be needed.

Not the first, though!

The ability to edit sent messages is not new to chat apps. WhatsApp rivals Telegram, Signal, and even iMessage offer the ability to edit messages, so definitely the chat app is late to the party. The edit messages option in each app is different. Although previous reports have hinted at the functioning of the edit feature, it is unclear whether WhatsApp will offer a log of edits made to a particular message within the 15-minute limit.

In the past, WhatsApp introduced several new features that are commonly found in other chat apps. More recently, the Meta-owned app launched the individual chat locking option for users. In addition to an app-level lock facilitated by the phone’s biometric system, WhatsApp now lets you lock individual chats using the same biometric authentication system. This means Android users can unlock chats through their fingerprints, while iPhone users can use both Touch ID and Face ID to unlock chats within the app. The app has also introduced the feature to move chats between Android phones without needing to back up data to Google Drive. A migration tool will let you transfer chats using a cable.

Recently, the Meta-owned messaging app released a new feature dubbed as Chat Lock on Android and iOS that will enable users to protected selected chats in the app with biometric authentication. Now, just days later, reports are hinting towards a new and interesting feature that the company has been working on.

As of now, WhatsApp users can share images, videos, emojis, GIFs and stickers in the app. While the company does have a fairly large library of stickers, it does not have a sticker for almost every occasion as it does for GIFs. This has led WhatsApp users to opt for third-party sticker-maker tools that allow users to play with images and text to create their own stickers that are better suited to their needs. But that is about to change soon as word is that the company is working for a built-in sticker-maker tool for its app.

WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp plans to introduce a “New Sticker” option within the chat share action sheet.

Furthermore, the report say that a similar tool is already available on WhatsApp Web and Desktop, but the one in development on iOS will provide users with additional tools. What exactly these additional tools will be remains unknown for now.

As far as availability is concerned, there is no word on the availability of WhatsApp’s in-built sticker-maker tool and that it is possible that the company rolls it out sometime in the future.

What else?

In a separate report, the company said that it is working on introducing an updated chat share sheet and a redesigned emoji panel in WhatsApp Web. The company is reportedly redesigning the chat share sheet in a way that is more compact and shows users labels in addition to showing the icons for the specific functions. In the redesigned platform, the emoji panel occupies significantly less space the existing format.

In the presence of Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, the event is scheduled to take place on June 5 in Cupertino, California.

Apple’s long-rumoured MR headset, which is reportedly capable of providing both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences, could be on display at this year’s WWDC, reports The Verge.

The headset will most likely be sold separately, with a battery pack that connects to the headset via a proprietary cable.

The developer-focused headset, dubbed “Reality Pro,” is expected to have a “ski goggle” design and a physical dial for tuning in and out of virtual reality.

The headset may be priced at around $3,000, however, Apple is reportedly working on more affordable versions of the device as well, but it might not feature at this year’s event, the report said.

Moreover, Apple is also expected to showcase a larger 15-inch display option for the MacBook Air — a device that has previously featured a standard 13-inch display.

The in-house M2 chip used in the MacBook Air models released last year will most likely be used in the 15-inch MacBook Air.

As WWDC is an event for developers, the company might introduce some new updates to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and more.

That includes the reveal of iOS 17, which is rumoured to come with a variety of smaller quality-of-life updates.

The tech giant has already previewed a suite of accessibility features that will almost certainly be included with the new operating system, including a Personal Voice tool that allows users to create a synthetic voice with 15 minutes of training.

Further, the report mentioned that there isn’t much information available about macOS 14 and tvOS 17, but Apple is said to be updating watchOS 10 with a new widget-heavy interface.

In terms of iOS 17, Apple may release a new journaling app for the iPhone that will allow users to write down their thoughts and activities throughout the day.

Earlier this month, Twitter added the ability to share encrypted DMs and use a new Emoji Picker in DMs to its platform. More recently, the company added the ability to send videos that are up to two-hours long on its platform. Now, word is that the company is planning to add two new features to its platform soon.

Twitter boss, Elon Musk has revealed that the platform will soon get two new features that will make watching videos easier.

While responding to a user on Twitter who asked Musk to add 15-second forward and back seek buttons, he said, “Coming next week, along with pic in pic, so you can watch while scrolling”.

The first feature will enable users to skip 15-seconds forward in a longer video, which in turn, will make it possible for them to skim through the contents of a video. It will also make it possible for them to watch a live video easily, especially if they missed out the live-stream the first time around.

The picture-in-picture (PiP) mode, on the other hand, will shrink a video into a small player so users can keep watching the video while using other apps or even scrolling through their Twitter feeds on their smartphones. To put it simply, these new features will enable users to seamlessly watch videos while scrolling through their timelines on Twitter.

Coming next week, along with pic in pic, so you can watch while scrolling

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 20, 2023

As far as availability is concerned, in his Tweet Musk said that both these features will be available to Twitter users next week.

That said, it remains uncertain if these features, that is, the ability to skip a video forward and to watch a video in PiP mode, will be available to all Twitter users or just the Twitter Blue subscribers.

Twitter has been pushing its users to move to Twitter Blue subscription since the past couple of months. The company has not only introduced Blue subscription in countries across the globe but it has also tied Blue and other coloured checkmarks to Twitter Blue subscription. More recently, the company introduced the ability to share up to two-hour-long videos or videos that are up to 8GB in size for Twitter Blue subscribers. It is possible that Twitter does something similar with its upcoming feature, which in turn would make Blue subscription a must have to use Twitter.

According to a new lawsuit filed by six former Twitter employees against Twitter, Pablo Mendoza, a venture capitalist who invested in Twitter 2.0, had a chat with Musk in the wee hours, reports Business Insider.

Musk bluntly told Mendoza that not paying rent was non-negotiable with ‘over his dead body’ remark.

The lawsuit said that Joseph Killian, a plaintiff who worked at Twitter for 12 years and oversaw office design, was aware that Musk decided to stop paying office rent.

“Killian attempted to convince Musk, via Mendoza, of the danger of Musk’s new position that no rent would be paid whatsoever, pointing out that any attempt to renegotiate the terms of Twitter’s many leases would be doomed to failure,” the lawsuit alleged.

“Elon told me he would only pay rent over his dead body,” Mendoza responded during the conversation that took place at 4 a.m, according to the lawsuit.

According to the lawsuit, Musk’s attorney Alex Spiro “loudly opined” it was unreasonable for Twitter’s landlords to expect it to pay rent because San Francisco was a “shithole.”

Twitter’s landlord in San Francisco had sued the micro-blogging platform over not paying rent.

Meanwhile, San Francisco officials are opening an investigation into Twitter following a lawsuit from former employees who claimed that Elon Musk’s transition team deliberately planned to breach contracts and not pay promised severance, among other things.

The lawsuit from six employees alleged that Musk‘s team “knowingly broke local and federal laws,” reports San Francisco Chronicle.

They are seeking severance and punitive damages for “flagrant bad faith”.

As per the data by layoffs tracking site Layoffs.fyi, 695 tech companies have shown the doors to around 1.98 lakh employees so far this year.

In comparison, 1,046 tech companies laid off more than 1.61 lakh employees in 2022.

In January alone this year, close to 1 lakh tech employees lost jobs globally, dominated by companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and others.

In total, about 3.6 lakh tech employees have now lost their jobs in 2022 and till May this year.

As more and more Big Tech companies continue to sack employees, they listed various reasons behind the move — over-hiring, uncertain global macroeconomic conditions, strong tailwinds from the Covid-19 pandemic and more.

Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly going to start laying off more employees next week in its third round of job cuts.

While the exact number has not been confirmed, it is expected that the company will lay off approximately 6,000 employees in this round.

Amazon India laid off around 400-500 employees from its Cloud division AWS as well as People Experience and Technology Solutions (PXT) or HR and support verticals this month.

Fintech unicorn Zepz is laying off 420 employees, or 26 per cent of its workforce.

The UK telecommunication giant BT Group has announced plans to slash a massive 55,000 jobs by the end of the decade.

Global telecom carrier Vodafone said it plans to reduce 11,000 jobs over the next three years, with an aim to “simplify” both headquarters and local markets.

Meanwhile, Microsoft will not give any raise to salaried employees, including senior leaders, this year as global macroeconomic conditions continue to haunt Big Tech.

Advancements in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning have not only made our devices smarter but they have also made the software — the apps and the programs and the services that we use — significantly better. But never has the technology garnered so much attention as it has been getting since OpenAI opened its large language model (LLM)-based ChatGPT to the public.

Opening ChatGPT to public not only started a sudden frenzy in big tech companies to release their own similar models but it also opened gateways to applications based on similar tools. Some of these tools have also raised serious concerns among the people who fear that these technologies can do more harm than good if left unchecked in the public domain. Another concern that has led to people spending sleepless nights is the fact that similar technologies have the capability to eliminate millions of jobs across the globe. The concern is so much so that leaders of the G7 nations are discussing to rein in AI, its development and its use-cases collaboratively.

At a time as critical as this, Google has published a policy paper that details a plan to develop and use AI responsibly. In its paper titled “A Policy Agenda for Responsible Progress in Artificial Intelligence”, Google talks in length about a plan to use “AI boldly and responsibly”.

“Governments, the private sector, educational institutions, and other stakeholders must work together to
capitalise on AI’s benefits. To seize on the potential of AI boldly and responsibly, A policy agenda that addresses Opportunity, Responsibility, and Security will help us boldly and responsibly realize AI’s potential,” Google says in its policy paper.

Google, in its policy paper noted that the economies that embrace AI will see significant growth compared to the countries that are slower on the uptake. “Adopting AI in existing industries represents an opportunity to move up the value chain, producing more complex and valuable products and services. AI also promises to help increase
productivity despite growing demographic challenges,” Google wrote in the paper.

Furthermore, the company said that governments, the private sector, educational institutions, and other stakeholders will need to work on joint and separate strategies to enable businesses, workers, and communities to capitalize on AI’s benefits. “Governments should increase investments in fundamental AI research, studies of the
evolving future of work to help with labor transitions, and programs to ensure strong pipelines of STEM talent,” the company added.

At the same time, the company asserted the need to ‘develop and deploy AI responsibly’ as in the absence of a more balanced approach, AI could also ‘amplify societal issues’. “Tackling these challenges will again require a multi-stakeholder approach to governance,” the company added.

Google also cautioned that, “AI can both help create and help identify and track mis- and dis-information and manipulated media”.

“Our challenge is to put appropriate controls in place to prevent malicious use of AI and to work collectively to address bad actors, while maximizing the potential benefits of AI,” the company added.
