He even fixed him a drink. The highlight of Sohail’s birthday bash turned out to be that big bhai Sallu and superstar Duggu aka Hrithik, who had a rather public spat recently, patched up.

Not only did they hug (as Duggu has promised to do in his rejoinder to Sallu’s digs at Guzaarish’s poor box-office performance) and make up, but also spent some good time together.

Our source from the venue said, “Hrithik walked in and met Sohail at the gate. Then he entered the bash. That’s when he came face to face with Salman. Salman immediately went up to Hrithik and hugged him.

After that he took Hrithik at a corner and both of them had a long chat, probably clearing the air about the comments that Salman made about Guzaarish.

After that Salman dragged Hrithik to the bar and made a drink for him. Both of them were seen smiling and hugging each other. Hrithik wanted to leave early. However Salman didn’t allow him to leave and all of them were seen chilling in a group.”

The source further said, ‘This shows that Salman has a big heart and Hrithik was also cool about the whole thing. Both of them have immense respect for each other. They let bygones be bygones.”

It can be recalled that Hrithik was extremely upset over Sallu’s comments about Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Guzaarish, for which Duggu won accolades. For the first time ever an otherwise quiet Duggu reacted to Sallu’s comments; Sallu also did not take to this lightly.

Apparently, as reported, Sallu even wanted his film Ready to be released on that same date as Duggu’s Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara, thus starting a new chapter in their war.

Duggu remained unavailable for comments. We also sent a text message to Sohail Khan but he too chose not to reply. All must have been hungover from the happiness of a battle having ended amicably.

Sexiest Asian Man of 2010 – Ali Zafar On 5th Spot

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I received an email from the Pepper.pk team who sounded on top of the world and could hardly contain their joy! Photo Editor is now the World’s #1 Best Selling BlackBerry Application across all categories. And it’s made in Pakistan! How sweet is that?

Pakistan’s IT industry has come a long, long way. The capabilities and skills of our companies are developing not just in the area of software engineering, but project management, product marketing and promotion. It’s no easy feat to leave HUGE names like Facebook and Monopoly, among dozens of others, behind! But what Pepper.pk’s laudable achievement proves is that not only are Pakistan based software companies ultra-competitive, they are, quite literally, second to none.

In December 2009 I had predicted that 2010 would be a breakout year for Pakistani mobile software companies. Specifically, I said that:

There will be a near-breakout level of success with a Pakistani based mobile software company. At least one company will claim 250K users for its mobile products by the end of 2010. It is very likely that two will.

Well, Pepper.pk has blown past those estimates, with well over a million users of their applications, and a Global Top #1 title for a major platform like the BlackBerry.

I wonder if someone at Adobe is listening, but they certainly need to. This young company has gone from obscurity to stardom in no time flat, and if you listen to them talk about their future plans, it doesn’t sound like they’ll be stopping to catch their breath anytime soon.

Long live innovation, and long live ambition!

Apparently, Salman Khan dropped in when she was shooting for Farah Khan’s film, Tees Maar Khan.
The two then headed to Kat’s van for a chat. After a while, Farah
followed. Later, the trio stepped out and were joined by actor Akshay Kumar, and all of them were seen chatting animatedly.

A bit of birthday celebration in between hectic shoots will no doubt lighten her up.

We hear Saif plans to fly Bebo’s mom Babita to Latvia on September 21.

Well, Hope Bebo enjoys her Birthday..

Dabangg Music Review

After the roaring success of Wanted, Salman is back in masaledaar style with Dabangg (English Translation: Fearless) which promises to be a your-money's-worth kind of an entertainer with all the bells and whistles of romance, song 'n' dance, comedy and action.
Music has been composed by Sajid-Wajid who have collaborated on numerous Salman films, including Wanted. Lyrics have been penned by Jaleese Sherwani and Anwar Faaiz. The album is made up of 10 tracks and features the vocal talents of Sonu Nigam ('Shukran Allah' - Kurbaan), Rahat Fateh Ali Khan ('Sajda' - My Name is Khan and 'Teri Ore' - Singh is King), Shreya Ghosal ('Teri Ore' - Singh is King and 'Bahara' - I Hate Luv Storys), Master Salim ('Maa Da Ladla' - Dostana), Sukwinder Singh ('Dhan Da Nan' - Kaminey and 'Chaiyaa Chaiyaa' - Dil Se) and Wajid ('Love Me' - Wanted).

The film also stars debutante Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood, Arbaaz Khan and features a guest appearance by Malaika Arora Khan. Dabangg has been directed by Abhinav Kashyab, produced by Arbaaz Khan Productions Pvt Ltd and Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd and is slated for release on September 10th 2010.

The album commences with a soulful romantic number by Rahet Fateh Ali Khan titled Tere Mast Mast Do Nain. It is a moderately-paced desi or sufi-esque track that is wonderfully composed by Sajid-Wajid. The acoustic guitar interwoven with the desi music gives this traditional track a nice contemporary edge. Anwar has penned simple yet beautiful lyrics that are enhanced by Rahet's mesmerising vocals. I personally believe that Rahet can never sing a bad song. The song also appears as a duet with brings the award-winning pair of Rahet and Shreya Ghosal from 'Teri Ore' (Singh is King) back together. Either way, both versions are beautiful. The remixed version of 'Tere Mast Mast Do Nain' by Designer Hippies vs Bombay Bounce is strictly okay since it does not butcher the number. That being said, 'Teri Mast Mast Do Nain' did not need to be remixed. It was perfect the way it was.

Next is Munni Badnaam, an item number picturised on Malaika Arora Khan. It features the new found vocal talents of Mamta Sharma and Aishwarya Nigam who were born to sing this number. 'Munni Badnaam' is the creation of guest composer Lalit Pandit who has also penned the track and he is done a fantastic job on both counts. Lyrics are not as arbitrary as heard in the usual item numbers and the music is relatively innovative. Mamta and Aishwarya's fresh new energetic vocals add to the innovativeness of the song. The number is very desi with use of instruments such as the harmonium but there is also a subtle modern touch to it. From what I have seen of the song's promo it is choreographed with as much gusto as it was composed with, and I can safely say that this number is well on its way to become one of the best item numbers of 2010. Since it is an item number, a remixed version is usually welcome. Thankfully, 'Munni Badnaam' is tastefully remixed DJ Megha. The remix provides a modern-techno alternative to the original desi one. It is definitely one of the best remixes I have heard in a long time.

The album slows down with Chori Kiya Re Jiya, a sweet romantic duet featuring Shreya Ghosal and Sonu Nigam. It is a melodious number, well composed by Sajid-Wajid and equally well written by Jalees Anwar. Anwar also gets props for writing the number in the U.P dialect that Sonakshi and Salman's characters speak. Shreya and Sonu who have already given us some fantastic duets in recent times ('Ishq Hi Hai Rab' - Dil Bole Haddippa, 'Shukran Allah' - Kurbaan and 'Don't Say Alvida' - Main Aur Mrs Khanna) have now added another number to that list. While it is not a ground breaking romantic number, it is easy on the ears and rendered by two brilliant artists who we love to listen to and that is the reason why it is not a total write off.

Hud Hud Dabangg appears next. One can say it is a somewhat loose amalgamation of Omkara's title number and 'Taali' from Veer. It is well rendered by Sukwinder Singh and Wajid who do justice to Jalees's well penned lyrics. The track basically maps out the characteristics of our fearless (dabangg) protagonist. It oozes machismo and strength and Sajid-Wajid have done a great job composing this number. Nonetheless, it is a situational title song with little to no chance of commercial success. Its purpose resides with the movie's narrative rather than the music charts.

Next is Humka Peeni Hai, a drinking song but it can easily be an item number depending on its picturisation. It is well rendered by Wajid, Shabab Sabri and Master Salim. The trio compliment each other well but after a while it air tends to get filled with too much testosterone. Some female vocals would have definitely given the song the edge it needed to be a better number. It just lacks oomph at the end of the day; otherwise, it is a sound number, lyrically and musically. Also, drinking numbers all tend to sound the same and feature little to no innovation. Moreover, the album already has a rocking item number and adding a drinking song, which I think is closely related to the item song genre, is overkill. 'Humka Peeni Hai' also appears as a remix by Fried Brain Music.com who do a good job transforming the desi number into a club-like pumped up modern track.

The album draws to a close with the Dabangg Theme which is basically an audio rip of the theatrical trailer to the movie. The sounds of punches, kicks and gun shots are all there. It is simply dodgy work. The dialogues should have remained as with Wanted's theme song but the other sounds should have been erased. It just screams album filler and that is highly unappealing.

In summary, Dabangg is a relatively good album. It is definitely not a Wanted. Wanted was loud and demanded attention while Dabangg's soundtrack is has a more subtle appeal and is not accompanied by the bang many of us were expecting. Kudos to Sajid-Wajid for not creating a replica of Wanted but they also lose points for lack of oomph. That being said, the album has some great numbers. 'Munni 'as mention previously will be climbing the charts for sure whether she is infamous or famous, thanks to Lalit Pandit and Malaika Arora Khan. 'Tere Mast Mast Do Nain' is simply irresistible. It is unabashedly romantic and that is what makes it so lovable. 'Chori Kiya Re Jiya' may not have actually stolen hearts but has definitely broken and entered into some hearts with Sonu and Shreya's enthralling vocals. If you liked Omkara's title number, you will definitely like 'Hud Hud Dabangg 'but the extent of its appeal is definitely limited. 'Humka Peeni Hai's', though loud and fast paced, just does not hold the appeal that Munni Badnaam did and fact that it is a bit of a boys club may hinder its success. Having tasteful remixes definitely wins Dabangg points. It is definitely one of the first albums I have heard where I have nothing bad to say about the remixes. Since the tracks are so desi, the remixes gives the listeners the modern alternatives to the originals. Obviously, the 'Dabangg Theme' is the sore point of the album. The track just needed some editing and forgoing something that simple is just laziness. At the end of the day, Dabangg shows honest effort by Sajid-Wajid who just keep getting better with every album. The only criticism is that the music of Dabangg just needs a louder and more powerful bang!

We Are Family

Siddharth Malhorta's upcoming venture titled We Are Family, produced by Dharma Production barely needs an introduction. From the very conception of this project it's been making the news, much like all Karan Johar productions. The Kajol, Kareena and Arjun Rampal starrer that is an official remake of Hollywood flick Stepmom is finally about to reach D-Day but before it does so, custom of Indian cinema dictates that the music should be released and naturally prove to be the biggest form of promotion for the film. Once again Shankar Ehsaan And Loy come forward on behalf of the production house to deliver the album that will contribute greatly to the hype of the film. So does the music of this remake prove to be a positive form of promotion or will it be a turn off for all those planning to see the film? Read on to find out.

Perhaps the best call by the trio was to start the album off with a track featuring two of the most talented and loved singers of the country in current times, namely, the man with a magical voice, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and the woman who needs no introduction what so ever, Shreya Ghosal. Aiding them also in the track is Shankar Mahadevan. Aakhon Mein Neendein is a beautifully constructed feel-good number that stands out purely because of the lead singers. Irshad Kamil renders the lyrics that are nothing 'out of this world' but merely add to the feel of the number. It's essentially a very 'Bollywood' number with a balance created between Desi instruments like subtle dholaks and western instruments, a common combination in Bollywood music. The rendering of the standard octave in Indian Classical music throughout the track proves to be a highlight.

The classic rock and roll number 'Jailhouse Rock' is recreated with Dil Khol Ke Let's Rock. Lovers of the original may find it hard to get used to the Desified version of this track. However, what is commendable is the selection of singers for the number namely, Anushka Manchanda and Suraj Jagan who were essentially born to sing this number! The one that sticks out like a sore thumb is Akriti Kakkar who just doesn't fit into the genre of the song. While the composition is impressive throughout, SEL bring in a desified touch to it at one portion that reminds you much of their track from Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, 'Rock n Roll Soniye'. The song is already a remake so the fact that parts of the track cause a déjà vu of previous SEL numbers doesn't really say much for the composers. Tip for the trio; please make recreations of portions from previous tracks not as obvious!

Thankfully the trio pick up the slack with the next one, Reham O Karam, sung by two singers who're poles apart when it comes to their vocal styles, Vishal Dadlani and Shankar Mahadevan. This one is heart touching rock number with beautiful lyrics courtesy of Irshad Kamil. It's essentially a heartbreak track where one is begging for a bit of mercy, a bit of luck for things to change. The two singers shine beautifully in this number and a great feel is created when both voices are combined. Filled with emotions this one is for those who like their songs to be somewhat 'deep'. Lets hope the emotions by Vishal and Shankar are done justice to onscreen.

Sonu Nigam comes in next to remind us just how amazing he is! And boy did he remind us or what! Hamesha and Forever is a melodious track boasting of a uplifting chorus, flute (courtesy of Naveen), acoustics and feel-creating strings. The sweetness and softness of the track goes up a notch with Shreya Ghosal's entrance. This one is a track you simply can't explain in words but one which you'll need to simply listen to for yourself and understand its beauty. Last but not the least, kudos to Irshad Kamil for the beautiful lyrics.

Bela Shande ('Kangana Re' - Paheli) enters next with a slow, melodious and classical number Sun Ie Dua Yeh Aasmaan. Yet another emotionally packed number on the album courtesy of the beautiful lyrics by Irshad Kamil. The flute by Naveen proves to truly create the feel of the entire number. One looks forward to being teary when this one comes onscreen.

The album ends with an impressive instrumental We Are Family Theme. Naveen takes to the flute again whilst Dominique Cerajo, Clinton Cerejao, Neuman Pinto and Vivienne Pocha take to the mic to give a soft and melodious chorus to the track. Without any lyrics this one truly speaks to you. The piano and flute give it a sweet and soft feel and then the strings enter to bring in the intensity, in particular the bass strings which seems to always have its own language.

Shankar Ehsaan and Loy churn out an album that hasn't got all the classic commercial elements, but rather is emotionally packed with every note in the songs. Baring 'Dil Khol Ke Let's Rock', every other track impresses immensely. Since it's an emotionally packed album the true potential of it will be realised onscreen and one hopes the performers onscreen don't let down the brilliant music given to them. Take a bow SEL for another job well done!

Robot

This music review is only for the Hindi album. The music is by Rahman and the lyrics are by Swanand Kirkire (Parineeta, 3 Idiots, Paa).

First up is O Naye Insaan. For a film on robots, you get a robotic track. From the audio, I’m hoping this song os picturised on the robot and not the leads. Vocals are by Khatija Rahman (yes! Rahman’s daughter) and Srinivas. With a deliberate balanced tenor, the track flows from ‘now slow-now fast’ pace. If you close your eyes and hear this one, you can almost feel the world spin around you and make you feel dizzy. The lyrics sound patriotic initially and it’ll probably take more than one listen to figure out the actual connotations. Khatija for a first attempt displays potential, Sreenivas effortlessly adjusts to the dual electronic requirements. Lines like ‘Lohe ka dum silicon chooman, Taaron ke jab ghat se, Hard disk mein yaadein lekar’ and the rest of the lyrics aren’t fun to hum or listen or interpret. Not a winning composition!

Then there is the romantic track Pagal Anukan, with Mohit Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal taking to the mike. This song has been featured in the first promos. The lyrics again are probably appropriate for a sci-fi film but definitely not going to draw any mass interest. The singers, sticking to their forte, try to uplift the song to fit the urban musical appetite, but when you have lyrics ‘Neutron electron neelay naino mein bolo kitne hain’ or ‘Main newton newton keh sakya dil yeh kahe dhol din ratiya’, it’s hardly bound to hit the mark. The music isn’t extraordinary either.

The third track is Naina Mile. The fastest number in the album, sung by Rahman, supported by Suzanne D’Mello, Lady Kash and Krissy. It’s a desi mix between 90’s singer Cher and 2010’s Lady Gaga’s supersonic ways, but not the usual variety for the musical tastes of Bollywood cinegoers. Techno beats, scientific words thrown in with a bad mesh of hinglish (combination of English and Hindi words) and the outcome is rather disastrous.

Arima Arima sung by Hariharan, Benny Dayal and Sadhana Sargam is again very situational, not something, that stays with the listener much after. Nonetheless, it is the only track that correctly highlights Rahman’s fabulous orchestration trademark. The song that starts with a good impact owing to decent musical arrangement falls flat within the first minute because of substandard lyrics. Even for someone like me who has been listening to Bollywood for the past 25 years, it’s hard to digest lyrics when penned as ‘Kamatur yantar hoon, Seedhay jo dil jhapte, Aisa silicon shape hoon mein, Yantaara’. Not your usual commercial score. Definite skip.

Next is the song called Kilimanjaro, a peppy love ballad crooned by Javed Ali and Chinmayi with additional vocal support by Clinton Cerejo. Rahman finally lets go of electronics in this one and finds solace in drums and percussion to give it a tribal feel and cadence. The lyrics are as cheesy as they can get and any romantic illusions built are killed right away. A fine example of how music and lyrics if not in-sync will destroy the best of melodies.

Chitti Dance Showcase is the semi-instrumental offering of the album with some aalaps and ragas thrown in to probably satiate the requirements of everyone associated with this song i.e. Pradeep Vijay, Pravin Mani, Rags & Yogi B. So in the around 2-minute track, there is an unusual concoction of western symphony, dhol beats, digital sounds and a tune which sounded belonging to Michael Jackson’s rendition. Although this one has all the requirements to be a hit among dance shows, auditions and break-dancers in city bylanes, there is nothing more to it.

Lastly, Boom Boom sung by Madhushree, Keerthi Sagathia, Tanvi Shah, Rags and Yogi B is a fast number bordering on the hip-hop genre. The tempo is comparatively louder that the rest of the tracks and seems like a complete mis-fit in the otherwise techno laced album. A couple of feet tapping moments, but once again the absolute disarray of lyrics don’t manage to keep the listener charmed for long.

As a whole, the album is nowhere close to Rahman’s winning compositions. The electronic touch in most songs might appeal to a certain segment but the lyrics are hardly going to get any accolades. The audio in isolation is undoubtedly not Rahman’s finest work, it remains to see how the songs fit into the movie as a whole. Hopefully, it does a better job fitting into the plot than making it to any of the chartbuster lists.

Peepli [LIVE]

I was kicked when I saw the trailers of Peepli [LIVE] a few months ago. And after I had the unfathomable opportunity to interview the producer of the film, Aamir Khan, I found myself even more curious about the film. With immense passion, Khan spoke at length about how true to real life Anusha Rizvi's Peepli [LIVE] is and how incredibly honest the script is. Peepli doesn't house any big names or stars; you probably will not recognize any of the actors with the exception of Raghuveer Yadav. However, this shouldn't do anything but convince you to watch the film even more. In the recent past, it is films that do not star big names that have gone on to gain critical and box office acclaim ala Udaan and Tere Bin Laden. Peepli [LIVE] is a take on rural life which is virtually unknown and to most city dwellers. So be prepared to laugh, cry, think and even feel anger, yes your emotions will be tested, as you watch Peepli [LIVE] or so we have been told by the makers. With a name like Aamir Khan backing up the film, you can almost be sure the film is headed places.

Peepli, a small village, is struck by poverty which puts Budhia (Raghuveer Yadav) and his brother Natha (Omkar Das Manikpuri), in a dilemma. After losing their land to the bank after they couldn't pay their EMI (easy monthly installment), the brothers come across a government plan which gives farmers a grant if a family member commits suicide. After major tu-tu-main-main, Budhia convinces Natha to be the goat and sacrifice his life for the greater of the family. But it isn't as simple as it looks. The media become aware of this incident and overnight, the episode becomes full-blown sensational news which attracts journalists from all over the world. Natha becomes a star as his walk to death is watched by the entire country as a reality show. Politicians get involved and amidst the entire shosha, Natha finds himself stuck and closer to publicized death.

As a first time director, Anusha Rizvi is top-notch. She not only brings to light issues, that hits home in the most satirical of ways and without being preachy. Her script isn't afraid to point fingers and attack the ignorance of society, the media, the government and politicians in the country who look for cheap ways to bank on such issues. Anusha's execution of her script is honest, simple and straight-forward. She hasn't used any fancy camera tricks; most of the film is seen through the media's camera. Peepli exposes scheming politicians and TRP frenzy journalists - print and television. Her sequences which depict the emotionless folks who do view rural India as ignorant and incredibly insignificant are hard-hitting. Almost immediately, you realize how incredibly uninformed we are as a nation courtesy of the media of course, who give undue importance to issues that are unimportant. Complete power to this ex-NDTV journalist who obviously recognized the need to bring such a subject to the forefront and what better way than through a film. As a writer-director she scores full marks for making noise on behalf of rural India.

As for performances, it is a blessing that Peepli [LIVE] doesn't list any big stars; they would have totally taken away from the simplicity that the virtually unknown cast of Peepli bought to the film. For the pretty well-known Raghuveer Yadav, Budhia seemed like the ideal role. The actor is incredible. He has an aura that has never been seen before and brings a sense of honesty and realism that is perfect. We need to see more of him. Omkar Das Manikpuri, who plays Natha has a truthfulness and immaturity in his eyes which has been exploited but totally works for the film. He speaks through his mannerisms rather through lines. Vishal O Sharma plays the outspoken TRP craving journalist and works it to the T. His depiction of a number of well-known television personalities is spot on. Malaika Shenoy, the American journalist looking to cover the big news is awesome - as the Americans would say. But the women who take prizes in Peepli are Shalini Vatsa, Natha's wife and Farrukh Jaffer, Natha's mother. You laugh your head off as you watch them argue nonstop over trivial domestic issues and so on. Peepli doesn't need a big name to bring in the crowds and this is a guarantee.

Musically, Indian Ocean deserve a special mention for their fusion and of course, Menghai Daiyan is 'the' song of the film. Whether it's the compilation, the lyrics or Raghuveer Yadav's singing, you cannot ignore this rustic number.

Peepli [LIVE] is an exceptional watch. For local Indians, the film is essential to watch because it gives you more reason to vote and choose correct politicians while also understanding that the media is not as honest it as it seems. For Indians abroad, Peepli subtly informs you of issues that are probably unknown to you sitting at home all way on the other side of the world. And it does all this without preaching. After watching films with big names and no substance, Peepli [LIVE] comes as fresh of breath-air.

Lafangey Parindey

Brand Yash Raj is desperately attempting to walk hand-in-hand with demands of the Indian audiences in the 21st century. One of the most prominent steps taken by the production house is to embrace the new outlook in cinema that the new generation has is by giving a break to new film makers. However, these new names don't always deliver. While Siddharth Anand delivered with Salaam Namaste, his follow up Tara Rum Pum was a disaster. Similarly, while Shaadi Ali outdid himself with Bunty Aur Babli, he failed miserably with Jhoom Barbaar Jhoom. This Friday's release, Lafangey Parindey features a similar maker who is getting his 2nd chance with the prestigious production house, but a third chance when it comes to his overall filmography. His debut film Parineeta took the industry by a storm as did his second outing Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, although in an opposite and totally negative way. Now he returns with Lafangey Parindey promising to deliver with this unconventional title, cast and subject. Does he indeed deliver? Read on to find out.

There is no doubt that thirty minutes into Lafangey Parindey you make up your mind that Sarkar has stepped up with this one and although not flawless it will be a major improvement to the rather disastrous Laga Chunari Mein Daag. For starters, he's chosen a story that is rather well structured and unique although it has its share of de ja vu moments. Despite those moments the film remains to hold ground thanks to innovative script. Perhaps Aditya Chopra ought to hand over the pen to new names more often because the credit of Lafangey Parindey's script goes to Gopi Puthran while the shame of the script that Pradeep Sarkar endorsed for Laga Chunari Mein Daag was credited to no one but Aditya Chopra himself.

Puthan has written a story based in aamchi Mumbai where people are struggling on a daily basis to make ends meet and demanding to make those ends meet through morally correct and legally endorsed ways is just not a priority, at least its not for the Nandu's (Neil Nitin Mukesh) of the colony. A trained boxer, Nandu fights blindfolded and brings in the big bucks for his boss. Enter Pari, the rollerblading, dancing, and feisty Pari. It essentially a love story between these two characters wound up creatively with twists and turns that their life style contains.

Having said that the film has an innovative script it cannot be denied that it doesn't have some of the usual clichés that you expect from a film that despite all the covering is essentially a love story. The film has a good section of it dedicated to a talent-show competition so naturally you expect a predictable climax, big performances by the lead couple and emotional dialogues in the final performance. As well as that it has the same old romantic dialogues wrapped up in the Mumbaiyaa language. However, despite all these clichés it doesn't bore you and keeps you interested.

Puthan keeps you interested with a story that flows at a progressive pace and doesn't drag at portions where you expect it to i.e. preliminary performance scenes of Neil and Deepika are run through quite quickly because naturally we only care about the final performance.

N Natarajan Subranmaniam also scores points for the fabulous cinematography of the film that steps away from the glossiness of Yash Raj films and yet doesn't become too dark, which could have been an obvious change for a film set in the real Mumbai.

Performances, of course, is the part you're all most interested in analyzing. Neil Nitin Mukesh shows growth once again but still remains a bit distant from the 'flawless' mark. While his dialogue delivery has improved he remains to carry only one expression throughout the film. Of course rollerblading and dancing all at once is definitely not something we recommend he try again! Ever! Nonetheless he's a promising young star in the industry who's definitely someone to look out for. More than Neil, however Deepika Padukone turned out to bag the 'look out for me' tag in this film. The actress steals scenes very elegantly and shines exceptionally in various portions. Her dancing catches your attention with her carefree and confident persona on the roller blades. More importantly it's her dialogue delivery, which you really sit up and take notice of. The actress has truly emerged from her first movie where she wasn't even given the chance to dub for herself. One hopes to see her grow even more in coming years.

Thus it has turned out that Yash Raj did the right thing by giving Pradeep Sarkar a second chance after Laaga Chunari Mein Daag. However, the real star of the film is Gopi Puthran who's writing is a major reason why the film impresses despite its many obvious flaws. At the least the film gets you your money's worth with the usual makings of a Yash Raj film, that is that it is essentially a love story, however with a new covering.

Aashayein

And to most Kukunoor fans like myself, we certainly hoped he would revive himself next time around especially since he is director to fab films including Dor and Iqbal. A number of actors would line up to work with the renowned director and John Abraham happens to be one of those many. Aashayein became the film that bought the duo together. The film took a bit of extra time to finally release but that didn't stop the cast from going out and promoting the film in all its grandeur. When you think Kukunoor, you automatically ruminate thoughts of reality, honesty and of course, a story that will make you think. Aashayein promised to make you love life and John Abraham even more than you already did.

Rahul Singh (John Abraham) has only one passion in life: gambling. Beyond placing large wagers, the man has no other meaning or reason for his life; so he believes. After a huge winning one day and proposing to his girlfriend Nafisa (Sonal Chauhan), Rahul faints and is diagnosed with lung cancer. He then realizes that he wants to do away with his life of gambling, hands over his winnings to his girlfriend and leaves for a beachside hospice where he wishes to spend his last few days. It is only at his time in the hospice that he meets an array of people who are all racing against death but manage to teach him valuable life lessons.

Is Aashayein Nagesh Kukunoor's best work? No, it isn't. Aashayein shouldn't be compared to Dor or Iqbal because it is a lot more sensitive. However, that said, Kukunoor's unique style and execution is evident. Such a touchy subject needs to be handled with careful precision and it takes an incredibly experienced director to be able to come through. Aashayein makes you think about life and responsibilities in a more honest light. Kukunoor clearly understands that Indian audiences are exceedingly emotional when it comes to life and death. With Aashayein, Kukunoor attacks the Indian emotion and connects almost instantly. Whether it's the script or the sentiments he is trying to emote, he manages to do that with extreme precision and feeling.

The problem with Aashayein is merely that parts of the script hams and is over the top. The dialogues are cheesy, corny and the tears just flow from every angle. Emotion in a film should be subtle. In Aashayein, it is all around which eventually becomes emotion overload. At points the film borders and hovers over being far too fictional making it almost unrealistic. It is this over the top quotient which brings down the script. And then of course, the pace of the film is far too slow. It moves from slow to slower as the death of John's comes closer.

Aashayein is John Abraham's shining glory. The actor becomes Rahul Singh with such devotion and perfectionism, it is unfathomable. John Abraham finally comes out with a performance which truly exposes him as an actor. He makes you cry and feel the pain he feels with immense emotion. And as much as the film owns much melodrama, Abraham manages to help the viewer overlook the tear-factor. Finally, he has arrived. Sonal Chauhan shows promise. Anaitha Nair is one to watch out for. Farida Jalal is a disappointment however, as she hams a lot. The young Ashwin Chitale is awesome as the spirited young boy who manages to change the stern Rahul Singh.

In its totality, Aashayein is promising and filled with emotion. The problem with the film is simple: it is emotionally far-fetched and too slow. There are a number of sequences which make you cry and become overwhelmed with emotion. Aashayein should be watched at least once; especially since John Abraham has revealed himself as actor...finally!

The New Busy Bee-Kareena

In fact, she has become so busy that Kareena’s mother is packing her bags for her further schedules. When asked Kareena about this she said, “I am shooting in Hyderabad till June 23. I land in Mumbai at 9 pm and from the domestic airport, go to international terminal. I board a flight to Marrakech, Morocco for Saif’s Agent Vinod in a couple of hours after that. It has been so hectic that I won’t have time to go home and pack my stuff. In fact, I have asked to pack all my stuff and meet me at the airport.” Kareena is very sad that she will not be there for Karisma’s birthday. “I have asked Lolo and Samaira to come to the airport for half an hour so we can sit and chat in the car. I don’t know if Samiara can come so late at night but I would love to have her come. I am feeling terrible that I won’t see her for more than a month,” added Bebo. Kareena is very busy till the year end. She said, “I have three films to complete Golmaal 3, Ra.One and Agent Vinod. Then Madhur’s film will start in December. Then I am endorsing 11 brands and have performed at every award show this year. In September and October, I get busy with the promotion of Golmaal 3 and Karan’s Stepmom. I have requested Sharukh to keep a schedule of Ra.One in Mumbai so I can be there for promoting and he has agreed.” Lately there has been a buzz that Kareena is signed for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next project Heera Mandi.
Whats making news in B town these days is the question that “Is Genelia in Imtiaz’s New Movie?”. After working with two of hottest actresses of the industry namely Deepika Padukone in Love Aaj Kal and before that Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met, it seems that self-effacing filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is now seriously planning to work with, one of the very cute actresses of B town, the effervescent Genelia D’souza.

Buzz in B town is that, recently the actor-director duo was spotted at a coffee shop in a Mumbai suburban absorbed in a detailed conversation. Though nothing has been confirmed as yet, but the chances are quite high about Genelia being a part of Imtiaz Ali’s new film.

Genelia’s last super hit film was Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa which was produced by legendary actor, Mr. Perfectionist of Bollywood Aamir khan to launch his nephew. Since then it has been more than two years she has not delivered a hit. Though she was a part of 2009’s average performer at the box office, the multi-starrer Life Partner, but it did not provide much visibility and notification to her. Working with Imtiaz Ali will surely give a boost to chubby Genelia’s career, which she desperately needs.

Well it would be nothing less than a treat for movie lovers to see Genelia in Imtiaz’s new Movie.

Sonam had crush on Shaan

But very few people might know this that Sonam has had a really long time crush on Shaan- the very versatile singer.

For the promotion of her latest film ‘Aisha’, she had come on the sets of Chhote Ustaad. Chhote Ustaad is talent hunts show where in little kids showcase their singing skills.
Coincidently, Shaan was also was called on the show to make an appearance. The actress was at her best when she was on the sets of the talent show. Last Friday was the day when ‘Aisha’ was released and she was looking quite excited about her movie.
Sonam was sitting exactly next to the singer and was seen blushing big time according to people from the sets of the show. She admitted that she used to have a big crush on Shaan and has found herself quite lucky to sit next to him and judge the show.”
Sonam was looking absolutely vivacious in a very gorgeous sari.
It was quite a surprise for everyone to see her in traditional outfit, considering her close association with big brands nowadays.......

Kareena not ready to take anything small

Kareena Kapoor is one actress, who lives life king-size and wouldn't settle for anything small. Though many popular actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty and others have tried their hands on the small screens, Kareena has turned down a television offer.

It is said that the bold and beautiful actress was offered a television show based on her - titled Main Kareena Kapoor Banna Chahti Hoon for a whopping amount but she turned it down with the excuse that she would rather concentrate on her film career than try her hands on something small. She said that getting into television is an exciting option but would concentrate on one thing.

With promising films like Ra.1 with Shahrukh Khan, Golmaal 3 and Agent Vinod on hand, Kareena certainly has no time for television.

Sonam Kapoor does a Sania Mirza

Tennis star Sania Mirza is one of the most-talked about names at present, with news about her engagement and impending marriage to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik doing the rounds. This has led to a film based on her life. Anees Bazmee’s film Thank You will have Sonam Kapoor playing a character who is very similar to Sania. Thank You will start rolling in Canada in mid-April.

Sonam’s character is that of a pretty, young tennis player who falls in love with a guy, who turns out to be very wrong for her so she turns back from it before it gets too late. This bears a similarity to Sania’s engagement with Sohrab Mirza which was called off.

According to director Anees Bazmee, Akshay Kumar, who plays the male lead in the film, plays a playboy-like character, who is dating 30-35 girls at the same time. He gives up on flirting when he meets Sonam but he’s not serious about her either.

Although the director dodges the question of whether Sonam’s character is based on Sania Mirza, he states that Sonam will be trained by a tennis coach in Canada so that she looks professional and not amateurish

Jiah Khan holds Randhir Kapoor's ears?

Sajid Nadiadwala and Sajid Khan’s Housefull starring Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta, Randhir Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmukh, Arjun Rampal, Boman Irani and Jiah Khan seems to have one funny incident after another happening on the sets.

This time round Jiah Khan ended up holding veteran actor Randhir Kapoor’s ear and got the entire set into splits.Reveals a source “Jiah Khan plays Randhir Kapoor’s daughter in the film and for a particular sequence Sajid told her to apologize to Randhir Kapoor and hold her ears and ask for forgiveness but due to some misunderstanding she thought she had to hold Randhirji’s ears”
“Everyone on the set started laughing at her goof-up and Randhir Kapoor himself was very amused by the incident.” adds the source.

Sania Mirza ready with her wedding dress
It seems Sania Mirza has starting planning for her wedding with former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik in spite of the controversy following their engagement. The news is doing the rounds that Sania is ready with her wedding dress.

She has roped in designer brothers Shantanu and Nikhil to design her bridal dress and reception outfit. The designer duo admitted that they would take care of Sania's wedding dress but refused to talk more about it.

Sania and Shoaib are scheduled to tie the knot by the middle of this month but the controversy about the latter's alleged marriage with Hyderabadi girl Ayesha Siddiqui has cast doubts if they would go ahead with the proposed marriage. Ayesha has demanded divorce from Shoaib, alleging that they had married way back in 2002.

Shoaib being questioned by Hyd police
Hyderabad, Apr 5: The Hyderabad police on Monday, Apr 5, arrived at the residence of tennis ace Sania Mirza to question Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik following a cheating case lodged by Ayesha Siddiqui, who claimed to be his first wife.

Immigration authorities have also been alerted by the police about the criminal complaint lodged against the cricketer. The complaint could prevent Malik's exit from India.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner A K Khan said Malik has been charged of harassment, cheating to marry another girl and criminal intimidation including threats to Ayesha to keep quiet.

Police said that a case has been registered against Malik under Sections 420 (cheating), 498-A (dowry harassment) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC, adding that investigation into the complaint will be conducted after verification.

“The Banjara Hills police have received a complaint by Ayesha Siddiqui against Shoaib Malik. We have registered a case against Shoaib. Now we will take legal opinion quickly before taking further action,” Additional Commissioner of Police (co-ordination), Dwarka Thirumala Rao said.

Citing about the legal complications in the case since Malik is a Pakistani national, Rao said that they" will have to examine whether a foreigner committing an offence on a foreign soil comes under the purview of IPC or not."

“The legal opinion will be taken quickly and we will proceed further as the marriage is on April 15,” he added.

On Saturday, Apr 3, Malik, who came to visit Sania, admitted to his marriage with Ayesha, but said that he was cheated into marrying her.

Will get married to Sania on Apr 15, says Shoaib
Hyderabad, Apr 4: Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik on Sunday, Apr 4, made it clear that his wedding to Indian tennis star Sania Mirza would be held on Apr 15.

Addressing a press conference, he said, Sania Mirza will continue to play for India after the wedding and his family would always support her.

"She (Sania) will play tennis till the time she wants to and my family will continue to support her. She will continue to play for India," Malik Said.

Shoiab declined to comment on his alleged earlier marriage with a city girl, Ayesha Siddiqui.

Shoiab said, "It is a legal thing and my lawyer will answer." He, however, issued a pres release explaining his side of the story.

Shoiab has hired Delhi based lawyer Ramesh Gupta after Ayesha Siddiqui's family slapped a legal notice on him accusing him of fraud and harassment.

Ayesha's family alleges that Shoaib married her over phone but dumped her later due to her weight problems.

Shoaib, however, insists that it was the Siddiquis who cheated him.

slamabad, Apr 5: The government of Pakistan has promised to extend all support to its cricketer Shoaib Malik, who has landed in big trouble in India where he faces charges of cheating and harassment.

Pakistan government has reportedly already gotten in touch with the Indian government in connection with criminal cases filed by an Indian woman against Malik.

Hyderbadi woman, Ayesha Siddiqui, who claims to be Malik's wife, has filed cases against the cricketer just days ahead of his proposed marriage with Indian tennis player Sania Mirza.

"We will give Shoaib Malik all the assistance he requires. We will proceed in the best interests of Shoaib Malik," Foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit said.

Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi was in contact with Indian authorities and had asked them to share information on the First Information Report filed against Malik in Hyderabad, he added.

Malik, who is expected to marry Sania on Apr 15, landed in Hyderabad just few days ago after Ayesha and her family raised a cry over the alleged marriage between her and the cricketer way back in 2002.

The Hyderabad police on Monday, Apr 5 questioned Malik at Sania Mirza's residence. The cricketer's passport has been seized after an FIR was registered against him.

Is Lara Bingle dating cricketer Adam Parore?

Melbourne,(ANI): Rumours are abuzz that Lara Bingle is now dating an ex Kiwi cricket star. The ex-fiancee of Australian cricket vice-captain Michael Clarke is being linked to Adam Parore, who broke-up with his partner Sally Ridge five weeks ago, reports the Daily Telegraph.

According to a report in New Zealand’s tabloid newspaper Truth Weekender, Parore would escort Bingle to the wedding of Kiwi cricket great Chris Cairns, who is marrying Australian Melanie Croser in Sydney on Saturday. However, Bingle's agent Max Markson has denied the report.

"That is complete and utter rubbish," he said. Asked if Bingle was attending Cairns'wedding, Markson said: "Not that I'm aware of. What day is it ... April Fool's Day. I'll say no more." Cairns also dismissed reports that Bingle and Parore were an item and said Bingle would not be at the wedding."I have never met her and neither has Melanie," he said.

Sania Mirza Engagement Photos

The two sports stars have been in an affair for the last six months, which had led to Sania’s earlier engagement to break.
Sources said that the mother of Shoaib Malik went to Indian city of Hyderabad Deccan where she met with the family of Sania Mirza and finalized Shoaib and Sania’s marriage.
This may be recalled that earlier engagements of both Malik and Mirza had come to an end.
Malik was engaged with Ayesha Siddiqui also from Hyderabad Deccan on June 3, 2002 while Sania on the other side was engaged with childhood friend Sohrab Khan which ended in January 2010.
The wedding ceremony of Shoaib Malik and Sania Mirza will take place in India while the valima reception will be hosted by Malik on April 16 or 17 in Lahore.
“I desire to get married soon. You will soon get some good news but it depends on my family. I fully expect to get married this year,” Shoaib had said in a recent interaction with the media.
ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has gotten engaged to former Pakistan cricket captain, Shoaib Malik and they might tie the knot next month, claimed a television channel on Monday. According to reports, the two sporting superstars have gotten engaged and their marriage would take place in April. Incidentally, Shoaib was earlier accused of marrying another Hyderabadi girl, Ayesha Siddiqui, in 2002 over the phone even though the cricketer said that he was merely engaged to her. Ayesha’s father had also threatened to sue Malik for jilting the girl and not giving her a divorce. Shoaib’s mother met Sania’s parents in India and accepted her as her future daughter-in-law. The ‘Valima’ reception is expected to be held in Lahore on April 16 or 17. The reports added that Sania and Shoaib fell in love some six-and-half months ago and it can be the reason for the breaking up of Sania’s engagement with her childhood friend Sohrab Mirza.
