International Women’s Exhibit 2012

'This is an exhibit in Celebration of International Women’s Month, March. Representing and connecting women from around the world from all backgrounds and cultures, working in all areas of life who share the same passion, photography. The exhibit is sponsored by Women In Focus, a women’s photography Group in Atlanta, Georgia. Curator is Gittel Chase Price, President of Women In Focus and Founder of the Women In Photography LinkedIn Group of more then 29,000 women from all parts of the globe.’

I was casually eating my Pizza Hut last night when I got the email through to say the virtual exhibition was now online, I was so excited to see my picture on the site that I didn’t really think anything else. I then noticed all those marked with a star were in the top ten, I really wasn’t expecting to come within that. All my college tutors say I need to have more confidence in my work and I think something like this reinforces it. I wasn’t going to enter in the first place because everyone else’ work was so amazing. This definitely made my night, it so exciting even if it isn’t the largest exhibition or competition it’s still a great start.

I tried to get up early today so I could get some bits and pieces sorted before going to the hairdressers. It was so sunny so I had a wander to some local fields and took a shoot followed by sticking the film through the washing machine, there are rumours the heat can distort the colours so I wanted to try this out for myself. I also had a mooch round Thornbury and found this blouse for £2.99, rather than being my usual shade a cream it’s pale pink. Taking a huge risk I know ;) I have work now, cry however I have Friday night off for once, yay!

Dress and Jumper; H&M

My wardrobe has become significantly smaller since we’ve moved house however there are still bits and bobs in there which I’ve hardly wore, just shows having lots of clothes is kind of pointless. This jumper must be a good few years old and the dress is fairly but I have probably only worn it once.

Stop Kony 2012

If you haven’t heard of Joseph Kony I recommend you watch this. It’s scary how little some people know about what’s going on in the world around us and how easy it is to get caught up in our own little bubbles. Awareness is definitely one of the solutions, when a problem is so obvious it’s a lot harder to ignore. It’s when something like this comes to light I really begin to remember how lucky we all are.
Watching this short clip will take about half an hour of your time, the equivalent of a Hollyoaks episode or session on Facebook and making a small donation now will be so insignificant in a couple of month (skipping a few McDonalds) but will make a big difference. I think I’m gonna have a look at the action kit here to start with and talk to my parents about ways they can help and donate money.

MHVH Feature

I’ve been in the London the past couple of days for a University interview and on tuesday night I got a tweet through to say I had an article posted on MHVH yay! While in London we also visited the Lucien Freud exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery and The Whitechapel Gallery which is near London Met. We also ended up eating our Pizza Express opposite the St Pauls Cathedral protestors however I’m going to talk about all this at a later date.

Shutter Speeds from the south #001

My current emerging creative practice is increasingly revolving around analogue photography. I want the viewer to feel submersed in the work, forced to attempt to find a meaning rather than an obvious understanding of the images. I have been working to a project brief concerned with museums and collections. I have explored this by looking into symbolism and the history of objects and buildings. The ambiguous, almost ghostly, element represents the past and what could have been. I’ve been working predominantly in 35mm film, however I plan to project my photographs in the form of an installation so it feels as if you are swaddled by the work. I also want the absence to evoke just as much meaning as the presence.'

I’ve had half a film left in my Holga for a while now so thought I would use it up on the weekend, when I had it developed I’ve found there was a light leak. I’m hoping it was me being careless rather than the camera itself. I’m going to do a shoot now in Aust with my Diana Mini so fingers crossed the same thing won’t happen.

In the past I’ve written a few articles for the fashion site That’s So New York aswell as assisting Daniel for a while. Completely out of the blue he featured me on the site, what a lovely article, it made me blush just a little.

I wanted to take a minute or two to introduce you all to a wonderful aspiring photographer, who most definitely fits the bill when it comes to the style of photography that I personally admire. Charlotte King resides in South Gloucestershire, United Kingdom and is currently a photography student at the Bristol School Of Art. With her being just 19-years-old, I'm somewhat surprised to see the sheer amount of passion she has for photography, and I'm almost positive that you will agree with me when I say that her passion for the subject spills into her work, and the outcome is truly inspiring.

After chatting to Charlotte, I can safely say that in addition to being handy with a camera, she also has a wonderful personality, and is possibly one of the sharpest dressed aspiring photographers I've ever come across.

Charlotte currently posts regularly on her blog, which is titled Charlotte's Web. Not only does she post her work, the work of various photographers that inspire her and music she admires, but also outfit posts and fashion-orientated posts - which prove that she is a dab hand when it comes to looking fly. Believe me; this girl knows a thing or two about vintage clothing and vintage shopping!

A Year of Mornings, 3191 Miles Apart.

I apologise about the quality of the picture, iphones gaa. This is what I received in the post this morning, my prize for coming runner up in one of the Tigerprint competitions, see here. I can remember looking at this blog so long ago while the two artists were completing their year of mornings. 3191 Miles Apart is the site, it’s really worth taking a look. I forgot how beautiful some of the photographs are, I think it takes a while to appreciate the images and what they represent. My boyfriend’s sister’s first response was ‘great, a picture of a cookie, oh and now coffee.’ I can’t explain why I love the images so much, there is something peaceful, whimsical and almost nostalgic about the photographs.

A couple of opportunities have come up recently, I’ve volunteered to work at Bristol Festival of Photography so that should be good experience aswell as being put on the guest list and receiving a free bloggers pass for Bristol Fashion Week. I’ve also got all my university interviews coming up in the next couple of weeks which is so scary :( I have been working on my portfolio today aswell as starting my new project on ‘Ambiguity Within Photography’. I’m gonna do an abstract shoot on saturday while having coffee and charity shopping with Nick.

I haven’t done an outfit post in so long, mainly because I think my wardrobe is pretty boring and nobody is interested. I stay away from bright colours and tend to wear a similar sort of thing everyday. However after the response I got with some of the items I put on eBay and am selling privately I thought I might start outfit posting again. Excuse my flicky hair, I really couldn’t be bothered this morning. I’m finishing off the last bit to my Camberwell portfolio then gonna post off some eBay item and go for a coffee with my father.

Oxford vs Oxfam.

Today we’ve been up to Oxford to visit the Pitt Rivers, National History and Ashmolean museums. The Pitt Rivers was incredible, I can’t imagine anyone collecting everything that he did. We also pottered round looking into Oxfam and a fudge house aswell as various other places. Oxford is so grand and beautiful.

My weeks now are becoming more and more revolved around university, I’m currently completing my Camberwell portfolio and I have an interview with London Met next wednesday. This whole college year has gone ridiculously fast. We’ve just started a new Fine Art project, I’m thinking about looking into ‘Ambiguity within Photography’. My friend Nicks coming home from uni this weekend so we’re planning a nice charity shop and coffee, it’s also my one year anniversary coming up soon, that is even scarier!

A friend from work sent me this competition link completely out of the blue and as I’m usually so bad at applying for different things I thought I would make an effort and send across a couple of photographs. Looking back now I’m so glad I did as two of my images were granted runners up! From now on I’m definitely going to be more aware of things like this. As well as upcoming university interviews I also have a couple of other projects lined up but I will mention then on later date when they’re all more concrete.

Luper at Compton Verney - Peter Greenaway

I’ve been looking at the book ‘Luper at Compton Verney’ about the Peter Greenaway piece of work however after researching further the book doesn’t comprehend the complexity in the slightest. At the present time I’m feeling quite overwhelmed trying to get my head round it all. Tulse Luper is a fictional ornithologist who Greenaway made up and who apparently has his whole life summed up and contained to 92 suitcases. The introduction to the book essentially sums up the idea,

‘It may be that the suitcase is the idea metaphor for our times. As never before, people are on the move. Ask any North American where he or she was born, and ten to one, they are not living or working there now. It is said that over 25,000 young people, each carrying a suitcase, arrive in Shanghai and Beijing every evening. And we know about the voluntary and involuntary movement of people in Eastern Europe since the Berlin Wall came down. And we are a material people as never before. Carry your world and possessions with you. Just about as much as you can carry whilst walking. Not just a clean shirt and a new toothbrush and a change of underwear but all the other information of identity - memories, hopes, anxieties, guilt, foretaste of intention, ambition, wish, fulfilment. ‘I live out a suitcase’ is no longer necessarily the cry of a boastful or a sorrowful professional traveller. How many suitcases have you packed in your life?

Until otherwise contradicted, Tulse Luper is associated with a life history of 92 suitcases, and since 92 is the atomic number of Uranium we can make the fact significant. Born in 1911 in Newport, Gwent and possibly still alive, aged 92 last year, we know that Luper travelled the world. He was certainly in Moab, Utah when Uranium was officially ‘discovered’ there in 1928. He was in Antwerp in 1939 when the Germans invaded Belgium. He was in Rome when the Americans arrived in 1944. He met Raoul Wallenberg in Budapest in 1945 and followed him to Moscow in the 1950s. He was at an East-West German checkpoint in 1963. And between times he was in Vaux, in Strasbourg and Dinard, on Sark, in Barcelona, on top of the Mole Antonelliana in Turin with Prima Levi, in Venice, and in Bolzano with a suitcase full of gold bars stolen from the Jewns. He was in the Far East after 1965, in Hong Kong and Kyoto, and he was putting down his suitcase in Beijing in the early 1980s.

As an inveterate collector, collator and classifier, Luper packed and unpacked suitcases, left them in appropriate and inappropriate places, had them stolen, arranged to have them stolen, abandoned them or was persuaded to abandon them. Sometimes with, and sometimes without his permission, others, intimates and enemies, packed suitcases for him. And beware, there may be fakes and copies and more than a few unauthorised suitcases posing as Luper originals around the world.

We have assembled what we believe (or almost believe) is the definitive collection - certainly 92 of the suitcases associated with his name, and, as a start to their in-depth investigation, we have offered here at Compton Verney, a brief explanation, excuse or justification for each of them and their contents. Certainly these 92 suitcases are the basis for intensely examining Tulse Luper and his life, and sometimes his times, the times of Uranium from 1928 to 1989, covering the first chapter of that emotive element, from its ‘discovery’, if you can ever 'discover’ Uranium, to the end of the Cold War. Luper might be called a Child of Uranium.

This intensive, if not to say ‘obsessive, examination of Luper continues in many different ways, in an ambitious project called The Tulse Luper Suitcases, in feature films for the cinema and in programmes for television, on web sites, DVDs, in theatre and in opera presentations, in text and books, and certainly in installations and exhibitions like this one at Compton Verney.’

Such a great book, I wish I had a chance to see the installation in full. There’s something so odd, deeply moving and disconcerting about this piece of work. It’s essentially about summarising life and world, if that is even possible.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year

The first time I saw this exhibition was 2010 with my father. Although I’m not the most enthusiastic wildlife photographer (I’d rather watch David Attenborough on t.v than be trekking the arctic although I loved spending a month in desolate parts of North India) it was definitely worth visiting. It definitely made me open my eyes to the variety of wildlife images you can have compared to the stereotypical ideas. The Veolia competition is back to Bristol museum yet again so I had to drag my boyfriend along this time to take a look, I glad to say he actually loved it. Here are a few of my favourite images from this years work.

I’ve been meaning to see this film for such a while now and eventually got round to going last wednesday after a day shopping in boutiques, vintage dives and charity shops on Gloucester road. On first impressions I thought this was a love story where the male cheated on his wife with a young actress however keeping it traditional there was no adultery, sex or kissing, it was just a simply nice film. I’m not going to give away too much but it is definitely worth watching as I felt it put a lot into perspective. One of my college tutors has always said fast past action type films are for the less intellectual as they need to quick moving imagery to keep them entertained, if you included in this sub category I would discourage you from seeing this, I doubt you could put up with a silent black and white drama. It is a lovely film though and Bérénice Bejo is so beautiful !
