I would have to say that I lack accessories and finishing pieces for the most part. I have some basics, not a ton, mind you but a few. Basically I need some of everything. So I have been on the hunt.

Two weeks ago I was looking for boots. As they are part of my outfit that I am trying to piece together. And would you look at what I found!! Some totally cute boots for $17.00 at, of course, the Devil Store i.e. Fred Meyers. Here they are. Originally $50.00, they were on 60% off lowest marked clearance price.

WOOO-to-the-WHOOO!!!

They kinda scrunch down and look great with my jeans and my denim skirt and my brown skirt. I have also added two white basic shirts. Both are button downs as I have two tie-shirt types white ones already. I also found a denim jacket. All of these were either on uber clearance or at the second hand store. I found a new one called Dazzle and it has some great stuff, but I digress. I am just so excited to find boots that are cute, fit, and didn't cost me an arm and a couple of eye balls.

On another note. I have needed a new temple dress for quite some time and I finally found one that I really loved. I ordered the 2x and the first picture is of the dress straight out of the box. I should have gotten the size smaller. (That was a thrilling discovery.) Anyways, why I am saying this is because alterations can be done to make things fit and look great. The second picture (where I am by my table) is the dress after I fixed it. I hemmed the sleeves and the skirt and took darts in the back to take out the excess under the arms and in the shoulders. Notice I don't look as droopy. I feel like I should look good even in the temple. In this dress I feel lovely. That is what it is all about. Be dang sexy and feeling like a million bucks. And if a little hemming can help, well then so be it.

Operation No-Brainer Wardrobe week 2 { filling in the gaps part 2}

Alright...so yesterday we discussed the three categories of a wardrobe:

Essentials

Additions

Finshers

And then we discussed what the essentials in my wardrobe might look like. Here is a list of what should comprise the additions on my wardrobe:

Additional jackets / vests

Sweaters

A versatile dress

Blouses made of non-knit materials

Belts

Stockings or tights

Heals, another pair of boots, and possibly a pair of sneakers

A non-denim pair of pants

Here is what I dreamed up that my additions might look like:

The 3rd category ( though not final, we do have a little sneaky category to discuss as well!) I think is probably the most fun, and that's the finishers! You really get to walk on your wild side a little when it comes to your finishers!

My Finishers

Another great versatile dress

Dressy shirts to layer

An edgier pair of pants

Versatile skirts

Here is a look at what my finishers might look like:

See...more patterns to work with...and I am seriously gonna look to getting a pair of 'sailor' style pants in my wardrobe, cause they are so cute!!

Wanna take a look at the completed wardrobe?

Let me tell you, it was a lot of work putting all of that together, but I think visual aids are very helpful! I know it helps me when I can see things and not have to dream them up all on my own! I think it would be interesting if we took this sample wardrobe and just counted how many individual outfits we can each come up with! There are some really obvious pairings...and then I think there are some not so obvious ones. if you dare to take the challenge, count them up and then tell us your number in the comments! ( This isn't a part of this week's challenge, just for fun!)

Hayley did talk about one last category in our wardrobe, and it's accessories. Here is what I will plan to have as accessories in my wardrobe:

A pair of stud earrings

A pair silver hoop earrings

Several pairs of versatile dangle earrings

A simple necklace

A statement chunky necklace or two

Bracelets to my liking

Varied array of cute belts

Scarves (galore!!)

These are going to be those little finishing touches that really pull an outfit together! You can be as heavily or as minimally accessorized as you like, its all about you and about how comfortable you are in your own skin.

So now that we have discussed a capsule wardrobe in detail, here is your task for the week: Go through what is left of your closet and find what is missing. Then come back here and write about it! Tell us what categories are missing, why you think your wardrobe lacks certain items, and what you think you need to add to your wardrobe to make it complete!

Phew! This was a doosey of a week for me with posting...and I gotta tell you, I kind of wish I actually owned the wardrobe that I dreamed up! Oh well...I'm on my way at least! Looking forward to your guy's posts!!

Operation No-Brainer Wardrobe Week 2 {filling in the gaps part 1}

Alright...we've taken our time discussing personal style, and I think we're ready to move onto looking at the weak spots in our current closets.

I'd like you guys to start by going back and looking at the pictures she provides in the book for an example of a 'capsule' wardrobe. Hayley talks about how our wardrobes should consist of clothes that fit into the following 3 categories:

Essentials

Additions

Finishers

Here is what I assessed that I need in each individual category:

My Essentials:

Basic tees- long and short sleeve

camis- with and without lace

basic cardigans

a jacket I LOVE

button down shirts ( that fit your personal style)

2 great pairs of jeans

2 NON jean pairs of pants

a pair of versatile flats

a pair of versatile boots

For a visual aid...here is what a look at the basics in my closet will hopefully look like:

Wardrobe furnished courtesy of Old Navy....pffffffff ha!! I wish!! :)

In all honesty...this is my closets biggest gap. For some reason....and I have no idea why, I do not buy basics when I shop! The majority of the clothes I actually own fit into the next category; additions.

My Additions

Additional jackets, and/or vests

sweaters

a versatile dress

blouses made of non-knit material

belts

stockings or tights

heals and another pair of boots. Possibly a pair of sneakers

a non-denim pair of pants

You'll get the snap shot and the rest of this discussion tomorrow!! Hope you're waiting with baited breath!!

ripped jeans and snake skin heels:)

OK here we go on my personal style:) Jenny hit my personal style on the nose so forgive me for repeating her. I'm typically a blue jeans and t-shirt girl, I LOVE the ripped jeans look and recently bought my very first pair from American eagle for 20 dollars:) and they looked Great if I do say so myself;) I wont wear raggy or stained T's they most definitely need to cute and somewhat feminine. and yes! I do love love love plaid button up shirts! I dont really know why the lumberjack style appeals to me but it does and I love them! I guess theres a country girl hidden deep inside me;) but like Jenny said when Sunday rolls around and its church time its a sexy pencil skirt with snake skin heels and a frilly top for this girl:) or obviously something else similar. I've noticed I like bold tops but like to keep it simple on the bottom, most of my skirts are solid black. I did however step out of that box and bought a dress on clearance at Down East Basics for $7.00 (I think that's my biggest steal on a sale item in a LONG time, very proud of myself for that find) Its Grey but has very bright pink floral print and has a belt that goes around the flattering part of my figure:) I wore it to church on Sunday and I felt great in it! I also love cardigans, I think I have owned at least one in every shade of the color spectrum;) OK not really but pretty close. I think they give a nice layered look which I've been told makes you look finished, like you tried to look nice:)
I still am searching for my style in accessories, they are going to be new to my wardrobe but I'm very excited to start a collection of accessories. especially scarves, I've always loved that looked and was never bold enough to wear it. So last but not least the strongest part of my style is in my bags and shoes, they are usually pretty bold, especially my heels:) as Jenny can attest to!I have a weakness for expensive brand name purses but usually because in my own opinion they have the cutest styles, however if I am patient in my shopping at the mall stores I can find one I cant live without for about 20 to 30 bucks. but sometimes it takes controlling the urge to buy a new purse for weeks in search of that perfect one. I have to fall in love with them or they arent worth my money so that being said when you see me in an outfit if you look at my bag and shoes I'm wearing be assured they are without a doubt the perfect statement of my personal style and are pieces of my wardrobe I cannot live without.
Can I just throw out some things I'd love to improve about my personal style? I want to feel comfy in a casual skirt, cute flats and a cute T-shirt during the week (on my normal jeans and t-shirt days) I dont want to change my style just mix it up a bit:) I'm thinking it must be something along the same lines as what Jenny told me about accessories and that is that I just need to put it on and own it;) so that will be one thing I will be working on over the course of time.

A totally different look...

I know...I didn't get my Monday post up this week....lame. It was a whirl-wind of a weekend...for all of us, I think. However...I put together an outfit tonight using an element from Katie's last out fit and I wanted to talk about it a little. Here's what I put together using the same dress:

cute right?

Same dress....totally different look. And I think that is one of the biggest accomplishments of the no-brainer wardrobe. Being able to take the clothes that you own, and make them work together. I love it...I really hope we can all succeed at transforming our wardrobes into clothes that work for us, not against us!

Anyway...thanks Stacie and Meg for getting your personal style reviews up! We'll move on to another action item next Monday, and hopefully that will give Katie enough time to get her personal style review up as well!!

Some Personal Style

Here is my outfit that I put together for just being up and about on Saturday. The green shirt I did end up taking in some and I think it looks better or at least I feel better in it. My accessories are lacking. I have this fabulous bracelet that I love, but I need a good necklace to go with it. So other than that and a fun leather bag, I think that I look halfway decent. Plus for Stake Conference that evening I just change my jeans for my brown lace skirt and I looked great. It was supper easy and I felt good.

Now to the hard stuff. Personal Style.

First and foremost I am a boot cut jean kinda gal. LOL There is not one skinny jean on my pintrest boards. I at least figured that out about myself. I also tend to run more along the line of casual chic, with a "farm girl" fetish i.e. button up plaid shirts. Simple cloths, in basic colors, that are easy to wear and easy to clean. I love a more feminine flair when it comes to my Sunday outfits. But I think more than anything I really love the accessories. Especially the bracelets and necklaces. It is where I am lacking but I love them. I am a square body type, so supposedly I can pull of lots of shapes, but I find that any shirt that is too long makes me look really short and I need some pockets on the behind or I look like I have a butt that goes from my waist to my knees. I also lean toward flats in my shoes but will wear fancy ones if I can find them.

I hope this is descriptive enough. I feel a little all over the place but let me know what you think my style is by checking my boards. I know I want to be pretty and functional. I love color but tend to not wear it as much as I like and I so, so love stuff that is sparkly. So there you go.

Stacie

country girl

<div style="height: 600px; I have nothing outrageous going on, on my board. Have a look:

Yup, there's lots of color. But that's it. And your opinion on my accessories made me laugh also because I have all these cute things pinned and most of the ones that I just re-pinned, wasn't for the add-ons. It was for the clothes, shoes and bags. Nailed that one.

I looked inward, haha, and figured that I pick out clothes just like I do quilt fabric. I LOVE the bold patterns and fun prints, but don't know how to make them work together. So, I stay safe. I guess there really isn't anything wrong with that. But I'd like to work on that.

In other news, I have found my shoes for the outfit I'm working on. I also ordered my watch...which I'm pretty excited about because 1)it was on sale 2) I have realized, with trying to keep smart phone use down, how much I miss wearing one. I'm getting so close! No more sneak peaks until the final reveal;) AND....I bought my first pair of SKINNY jeans! Holy shnikees!

I'm pretty excited about them. They look good and I can comfortably fit into 14's again. I'm on my way down and it feels great!

Operation No-Brainer Wardrobe Week 1.5 { still assessing personal style}

Well last week went pretty well I think...there was plenty of action on the blog which is great! We purged two closets ( mine and Stacie's) and Stacie wrote a great post about her experience! Here's a shot of my closet post-purge:

There it is....13 shirts/sweaters, 3 belts, 2 scarves, 2 skirts, 3 pairs of dress pants, 2 pairs of jeans, and two dresses. That's a lot of purging...especially considering the amount of left over hangers I had...

yes...the vast majority of these actually were being used

So this last week we were supposed to be going through our style boards on Pinterest and Polyvore and posting about what we each discovered about our personal style. I lead the way with my post, pointing out the trends that I noticed I have been drawn to....and then...nothing. :) No one else posted anything about their personal style! So, I would qualify that as a HUGE No-Brainer FAIL for the lot of us! One of the biggest things Hayley talks about in the book is planning our wardrobe to fit together, and buying pieces that we really LOVE and will get a lot of use...so that we aren't being drawn back to just buying any old shirt of pair of pants that comes along. And honestly, how are we going to be able to build these awesome wardrobes if we don't know what our personal styles are???

Meg and Katie suggested that maybe I could take a peek at their boards and see if I can find out what their styles are, so here are the things I have noticed for them. BUT...LET ME PREFACE THIS by saying...I can look at what you have pinned and notice patterns, but you really are the only one that will be able to tell if it is truly your personal style! This step takes a little bit of introspection...and sure, that may not be very comfortable for some of us, but there is nothing wrong with knowing ourselves well. And what better place to start the our sense of style?

So here is what I've picked up on:

Meggan

I would say your personal style is somewhat subtle. You aren't really drawn to patterns of any kind...and if you do like them then they are on an accessories like a scarf or bag.The colors you are drawn to are fairly soft. Nothing really bright or jewel toned. You like cardigans and jackets...probably because you enjoy layering. You aren't drawn to super feminine details like flowers, or ruffles, or pintucks...you really like clothing that is fairly basic. You like shoes, and are also somewhat drawn a vintage classic look. You really like accessories though...you are the type that will wear jeans and a plain tee with and awesome chunky necklace and a great bag and shoes that you love.

Katie

I would say for you that you are quite the opposite of Meggan...you really like patterns, and textures and glam! You like super high heals, floral patterns, fabrics that have added sparkle. You like pretty accessories and are drawn to things that make a statement. But your casual side seems to be a little a war with your dressier side, because you also like plaid shirts and sneakers. Your style wants to be able to frolic in the mud with the boys by day, and then turn on the ultra-sexy siren at night!

Now...I expect all three of you to sit down and take a look at yourself and tell ME what you like!! (Stacie if you would like me to do a mini-assessment of you as well just let me know!) I'd really like to move on from this topic as quickly as possible, so if you can post your thoughts about your personal style by mid week then maybe I can get our next ask up before next Monday!

I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys have learned about yourself!

accessory Help needed! :)

This is my next outfit I plan to thrift store find (or at least something similar) :) what I would love help on from you super adorable girls is actually the "finishing" items. Not a ton really. Except, that when I was super excited about my fancy Hollister sweater being on SUPER sale, I should have realized what an over-priced article of clothing it was...and that paying 17.50 was probably still giving them a huge profit. But alas. Such is life. The point of all that is...my sweater came and right on the big tag it says "Made in China". :P

But it's really cute and fits perfectly in the 'go-to' outfit I'm working on. Yay!

And the white t-shirt? I found that also. It was 8.99 (on sale)so I'm pretty happy with that. The total for my outfit so far is 34.44$. Can't complain with that.

Yup. It's an extra large. But I'm ok with that. It's a <strike>teeny bopper girl who hasn't had any kids so she has no boobs or hips</strike> "juniors" top. So I have all the main pieces of clothing but am lacking the shoes and purse. Oh and the watch and bracelet. Haha. I'm having a really hard time finding a purse that I think "fits" the look and one that will be practical for me. Since I do still have to use 3/4 of it for kids paraphernalia. So....back to polyvore I go:)

' No-Brainer' Fail { # 1}

Man....today was a rough day when it came to the closet. I have been feeling pretty good about my wardrobe...was getting a little more adventurous in my choices, picking clothes to wear that I really liked but have previously been too self-conscious to wear. And then today my dress came!! That's right I bought it...that gorgeous gray dress that's part of my first 'go to' outfit on the sidebar over there! Could this day get better??

Well this is until...

I know....bad lighting. Trust me though...it would look just as bad with good lighting

Here's a close up of my massive chest:

Man that's a kick in the pants. Particularly because I bought this in a size too large ( according to the websites size charts) to accommodate the size of my rear-end. I thought I would for sure have to take in the bodice. Apparently their size chart is slightly off.

Soooo...I have to loose 10lbs to even breath in this dress ( possibly 20lbs). Pretty much exactly opposite of what the No-Brainer Wardrobe is all about. Epic FAIL.

Well it was bound to happen. Back to the drawing board I guess...

The Great Purge of 2012

I have decided being fabulous is a lot of hard work. But I should have known better because change is never, ever, EVER, easy. So I don't know why I thought getting myself out of my cloths funk would be any different, but I did. All sunshine and roses, la-tee-da, and poof a wonderful new you. Very stupid on my part, but such is life. So on with the purge. This would be my part of the closet. I can't even say half because I have definitely encroached on Marc's half for quite some time now.

As you can see my cloths are stuffed in there. It is a good thing Meggy came up with the idea of hanging my cloths because if I had a dresser it would be overflowing or the cloths would just be sitting in the huge pile that it was in before she came.

I had tried for a while to keep like things together but after a while when you wear about 10 things out of your whole closet it just seems overwhelming and pointless to organize. Mostly I felt like, "Here I have all these cloths, why the heck can't I find anything to wear that I don't feel makes me look like a cow?!" Sunday's are very rarely good because there are three to five changes before I settle for just about the same thing that I wore the last 6 Sundays in a row. I was definitely ready to get myself in a better place when it came to my wardrobe and Monday was my day for the great purge.

I got started on my own before I got down to skyping with the girls. Things I knew I just didn't like, didn't wear, or were ready for the rubbish bin. This was my pile of "off to the second hand store stuff".

And this was my pile of trash. Stuff that I had bleached, stained or was torn. I didn't take a picture of my finished pile of the second hand cloths but I filled up 4, 13 gallon garbage bags with all the stuff that I got rid of and the one bag of trash. By the end of our session I was feeling a bit on the discouraged side of things. It had nothing to do with the getting rid of the cloths as much as it had to do with the fact that; 1: I wasted on money on cloths that just didn't look good, 2: I had been walking around in these cloths for quite some time. Not thinking I was fabulous by any means but certainly not looking as bad as I obviously did, due to the reactions of the girls when I put on said outfit. 3: That of course I would do the purge after we spent our tax return on paying bills (how responsible of me) because now I have very few cloths and no money to start buying the right cloths. 4: I really thought I was putting myself together better than I came across.

Here is what I am left with and I must say it is somewhat meager. Owing to the fact that a third of the cloths are my workout shirts, but having had a few days to come to terms with my image or lack there of up until this point, I am feeling better about what is there.

It was very easy to get dressed this morning. Everything there looked good on me. I still changed my shirt once but that is going to happen no matter how good my cloths look on me because I still have fat days. I also spread my cloths out across the bar and have everything organized again. I have been diligently looking at cloths on line and trying to get myself a style. Accessories are probably my main issue. I really don't have any. So I will take this in stride like I do everything else. I feel really good about the way I have look the last two days, at least. I know that what I am wearing is flattering and looks nice on my body.

So get in there and purge!! It may not be easy but it is most assuredly worth it.

Stacie

Sunday Oufit

Well, ladies, here I am in all of my fabolishoussness. Yes. I know that is a total made up word and you are are going to have to sound it out phonetically. I have not purged my closet yet but I have been working on my wardrobe issue for a while now and have been trying to be more conscious of my body and my style. This is what I would have to say is my first complete outfit. I found the skirt last week at the second hand store and the shirt at a different second hand store a few days later. So I spent $7.00 for those two pieces. The shoes are a Ross find for $10.00 and the bracelet I got at Kohls for $5.00. I borrowed the earrings from my daughter. ;)

So with the white tank top that was on clearence at Walmart for $3.00, I spent a $25.00 for the whole shebang. I think that this outfit works not only as a great outfit but as really solid foundation pieces as well. The shoes I use all the time, the shirt can have any colored tie underneath and I have several other tops that go with this skirt.

I would like to get some better or I should say more dramatic pieces of jewelry to go with the bracelet. But that will come. So far I haven't found what I am am looking for quite yet. Something a bit more chunky would be good.

But all and all I am please with the over all effect. I did get several complements at church today, so I think I did something right. Tomorrow is the big purge the closet day and I am looking forward to it. I get tired of looking at my cloths and thinking how bleh I look in half the stuff I own. So here's to some progress.

Stacie

Operation No-Brainer Wardrobe Week 1 { your personal style }

Alright...so we've bought the book, purged our wardrobes, set up boards on Pinterest, and are learning the ins-and-outs of Polyvore! Not bad girls!

While Katie and Stacie catch up with filling their style boards on Pinterest and looking for clues into what their personal style is, I thought I'd go ahead and analyze my own own personal style.

Here is a snapshot of my style board on Pinterest:

If you'd like to see my entire board, the link's right on the side over there :)

I know...it's a lot to take in! I think I just like clothes in general!!! ( What girl doesn't, right??)

After examining my board closely though, I did notice several patterns emerge, just like Hayley said there would be! Here is what I tended to pin a lot of:

Cardigans

Horizontal stripes....skirts, shirts, you name it and I like stripes!

Floral print shirts...the print tending to be on the small side

Shirts with defined or gathered waists...usually at the natural waistline

Dresses with fitted bodices and full skirts

Structured coats

A general feel of 'vintage', 'classic', and 'feminine'

Shirts with details like pin-tucks or ruffles

Minimal, well chosen jewelry

Large bags

Scarfs

Boots and flats

All of these things are a far cry from the t-shirts, sweat-shirts, and pajama pants I've been spending most of my life in lately! But that's what this is all about, right girls? Making the inner fashionista have her chance to shine! It just so happens that my inner fashionista happens to like really dainty, ultra-feminine clothes! Who knew!?

So your task for this week: Pin, Pin, Pin!! And then examine and decipher your personal style. Get on here, and write about what you have discovered about yourself! Lets play nice and make sure that we comment on each others posts from here on out. ALSO...what would you guys say to taking a few "before" pictures? Like maybe pick our 3 most worn outfits? Then we'll all come and post them so we can see how far we have come?? Nay, yay? Let me know in the comments!

A steal

Ok ladies! I've been a bit apprehensive about this whole thing. Not because I don't want to revamp and look hot, but because...I don't feel "hot". I'm mad at my body right now so that makes it hard to feel beautiful in clothes. I know we've all been there. But, since I know what a crazy person Jen is, I've got to make an effort. -insert smirk-

I've been on polyvore like 800 times, just today, looking for things to complete my look. I know I should be going to thrift stores to look around (and drop off my purged wardrobe) but it's hard with the two kids in tow. And now that B is wrestling and Matt is in scouts my alone time will be something to figure out. Back to the point. Polyvore. I love it. It's filled with all sorts of cute clothes and I just figured out that it's like...in stock things. Chances of finding the same shirt a week later is like impossible. Which is how I stumbled across this:

A 100$ Hollister sweater for, get this, 17.45$! Add shipping and my grand total was 25.45$! Holy super excited! Now here's to hoping that I don't get an email saying "sorry this item is no longer available". That will make me super sad. But it's a start. Add it to the jeans I already have and then find a white t-shirt. You would think it wouldn't be hard...but since the basis for our new wardrobes is to feel comfortable and put together, I can't very well buy a nasty feeling white t-shirt now can I?

OK, I'm back on the hunt.....

The beginning of a new journey...and I need help!!

Oh my gosh we must be crazy. But I'm excited! I think that we need this!! I know that we BOTH want to look less like frumpy mommies, whose kids have sucked the life out of us to the point that we don't even care to look decent anymore, and more like women who take our jobs seriously as moms, but still know who we are and want our inner beauty to shine out!

So...just a recap from our convo yesterday:

* We're working with the book " The No Brainer Wardrobe". This is going to be our re-fashion Bible!

* We've both read the book completely, and I plan on now re-reading the book, taking note of action points and important style theories and writing them down into a schedule to work on. If either of us finds that the schedule is too fast or two slow we will come together and discuss again how quickly we would like to/ and are able to accomplish our tasks

* Our end goal is to have four completely put together (but different) outfits by Christmas. I think this is a great goal...particularly because she STRESSES buying items that can all go together in your wardrobe. So in reality if we can accomplish this goal, we actually probably will end up with at least double the outfits because of their mix-and-match-ness.

I plan on starting off with a bang, and buying one item this pay period! But I need you to help me choose!

Originally, I had a desire to start putting together this outfit:

via Pinterest

I found that exact shirt, but they do not make it in my size. That's fine...so lets get a little creative. I found this dress a Old Navy:

Old Navy

I would absolutely need to hem it to make it a shirt....probably cutting off that entire bottom section of flowers. But it's blue, and the right shape...I think it will work. This shirt is 34.94

Of course, at this point I just decided to cruise my style pin board and see what other nifty things I have pinned and I came across this dress:

via Pinterest

And miracle of miracles, the dress is still available and they have it in my size!!( I think you'll find, like I did, that when you go to find the pieces of outfits you have pinned but you didn't originally put together, the pieces are no longer available) AND BETTER YET... it's a reasonable price!! 52.99!! ( edit: I just checked, and thought I should add....the shipping is FREE as well!!)

So what should I do? Go with the Old Navy shirt that is close to what I originally wanted? Or go with the exact dress I pinned and make this the start of my first outfit?? Help!!

Along with helping me choose, your action item for today should be to go through and find 4 outfits that you would like to recreate this year. And then we will post and discuss!

Okay...I hear my kids waking up,and I need to get us up and ready to get to the sitter's by 9:30! So text me when u read this! Oh...and I have plans to revamp the blog during nap time today...just so you know! :)

love you!
