Bluegrass and country music legend Earl Scruggs passed away yesterday March 28, 2012 of natural causes. He was 88.

Earl Scruggs developed his own unique style of banjo playing which attracted the attention of Bill Monroe in 1945. It was while in Monroe's band he met guitarist and mandolin player Lester Flatt. Three years later they went on their own and formed the Foggy Mountain Boys although they were also known simply as Flatt & Scruggs. They were best known for the instrumental "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" (the theme to The Beverly Hillbillies). They also had interesting takes on songs like The Monkees' hit "Last Train to Clarksville" and "Nashville Skyline Rag" which was later recorded by Bob Dylan. Flatt & Scruggs went their separate ways in 1969 and formed their own bands. In 1979, Flatt passed away of heart failure shortly before his 65th birthday.

But they shouldn’t distract us from a very precise and practical problem that hasn’t been addressed: the refusal of the CIA to disclose the details of its involvement with Islamist groups. In recent weeks, the agency has tried to block sections of a new book that deals with its handling of al-Qaeda before and after September 11. But this is only one part of a large-scale cover-up that Western governments have been perpetrating about decades of ties to Islamist organizations. Until we clarify our murky history with radical Islam, we won’t be able to understand the background of the September 11 attacks and whether our strategies today to engage the Muslim world are likely to succeed.

Of course some of this history is well known. The blowback story how the US armed the mujahedeen, some of whom morphed into al-Qaeda has been told in book and film. We are also getting a sense now of how parts of the US-backed Pakistani military-intelligence complex have actively supported radical Islamists. Collusion between Britain and Islamist movements over the past century has also been explored. And of course, Israel’s support for Hamas as a counterweight to the Palestinian Liberation Organization has gone down as one of the great diplomatic miscalculations of recent history.

Gonzaga, then created their own buzz with an impressive 86-71 victory and complete St. John's.

This victory led many, including myself predicted that BYU would advance past and cruise into Sweet 16 Jimmer Fredette had different ideas. Fredette was a bit 'slow, but heated as the game went.

He finished with 34 points and was an incredible 7-for-12 from behind the bar.

Now there is nothing more to Gonzaga, but prepare for the next season. Ed is a season, and Gonzaga fans should be excited. Gonzaga is a young team, which has begun to understand how to play this season has gone.

When the 2012 NCAA Tournament rolls I guess he will not win the first round to Gonzaga to create buzz will be there already.
