Introduction Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd., showcased the Etios which turned out to be a headturner at the Auto Expo held in New Delhi in January 2010. While the car was not a production model, people at the Expo got a fairly clear picture of what the car would look like once it arrived by the year end and also about what they could expect on it. Toyota displayed both, the hatch and the sedan models, at the Auto Expo.
With the introduction of the Etios Toyota will enter the under 7 lakh, mass volume segment. Toyota Kirloskar aims to sell 70000 units of the Etios in India per annum and it will also expand its dealership network to 150 by the end of 2010 from its existing 97 dealers, at the time of the Auto Expo in January 2010.
Design The Etios was originally called the EFC, or the Entry Family Car. Etios means Spirit and Principle which Toyota intends to give to its customers in India. More than 2000 engineers in India and Japan have worked in close collaboration for four years to ensure the perfect blend of local design sensibilities and unmatched global quality standards are integrated into the Etios.
The chief engineer of Product Planning at Toyota Mr. Yoshinori Noritake said, "In the process of development of Etios, I have visited many Indian cities and homes to understand the market and interact with customers. Hopefully, there will also be a diesel car as a diesel version of the car would make a lot of sense for several buyers especially here in India. Also, considering it would come from the Toyota stables, most buyers would be only too happy to put down the extra thousands for a diesel engine by Toyota, humming under their hoods. The fact that Toyota has recently launched the Toyota Corolla Diesel, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to think that Toyota would launch the Etios only with petrol engines.
Competition Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Swift Dzire will be the main competition for the Toyota Etios.
In addition to the sales in India, the car, which is Toyota's biggest project, the car will roll out of the Bangalore plant and will also be offered for sale in China, Russia and South America. Another hatchback has entered the Indian car industry and this time it is Fiat that is hitting the news. Grande Punto, a hatchback from Fiat India Automobiles Ltd. is launched in India. This car will be available in three engine options - the 1.4-litre fire petrol, 1.3-litre multijet diesel and 1.2-litre petrol option. The new hatchback will be available in four varying trims that are Emotion, Emotion pack, Dynamic and Active.

Fiat India Automobiles Ltd. which is a joint venture of Italy's Fiat SpA and Tata Motors Ltd. is producing Grande Punto at its Ranjangaon factory in Pune, Maharashta. According to the automaker, almost 85% of the car's parts and components will be sourced from domestic suppliers. Sourcing auto parts will help Fiat to competitively price this hatchback.

Fiat Grande Punto, the recently launched car has Italian design and engineering of all the larger Fiat cars. It is developed by Italdesign-Giugiaro along with the Fiat Style Centre. I was back in the NCR sometime back and it was one of those few occasions that made me turn my head back to notice something while I was seated behind the wheel of a car. (Yes, I know it is unsafe to do this mom. Do not give me that scolding now, there are people reading this!) But well, I did this ‘coz it was something special. What was it? Okay, the title does give a feeler to you, but we have a little insight. Wanna know? General Motors seems to be on a high after launching capable products in the form of Aveo, UV-A, Spark and the latest - Optra Magnum.

GM has always expressed its interest in the SUV segment which has experienced a steady growth over last few years. That ‘interest’ might soon see the light of the day in the shape of Chevrolet Captiva.

This grand plan of Chevrolet was leaked even further when some spy pictures were displayed on the www (Hell, why on earth was I not carrying a camera back then!).

Essentially a mid-size crossover SUV developed by GM in ‘Daewoo land’ the Captiva is based on GM’s Theta platform. The name is retained in markets like the ASEAN countries in addition to the Middle East and South America while Australia gets it as a Holden badged Captiva.

This good-looking SUV is offered with a 2.0L, 152PS common rail diesel engine developed in conjunction with VM Motori and a 3.2L V6 from Holden. Though the V6 is a far shot for India, we have reasons to believe that the 2.0L ‘TDCi’ motor will do duty on our roads. There is also a 2.4L petrol engine in GM’s kitty and they might consider powering the Chevrolet Captiva with the ’sparking’ engine as well.

Practicality is what GM would be aiming at and expect the Captiva to be offered in 5 or 7 seating configuration. Considering that it will be at the better side of 12 lakh, expect this machine to offer good equipment levels. High-end sound system, 16 inch alloys and a surfeit of other great options.

It will have a formidable lineup to compete against. Ford’s “new” Endeavour, the Honda CRV Hyundai’s Tucson will try and make life difficult for the Chevy. Whether or not the Captiva holds its own in this severe battle is going to be seen in some coming months. and

Price it under 16lakhs, GM, and you will have another winner in your portfolio. We shall pray.
