A 24-year-old boy whose mother was raped in the genocide in Rwanda told the BBC how he discovered the circumstances of his birth.

The names were changed in the report to preserve the identity of the family.

Jean-Pierre says he started questioning who his father was when he had to fill out a form at the end of primary school asking for the parents' name.

"I did not know him - I did not know his name," he says.

Jean-Pierre, for his part, is full of his mother's pride and what she has achieved:

"It's very difficult to see, but I was very happy with her progress."

"The way she accepted what happened, the way she thinks about the future and the way forward."

Note - The United Nations has made efforts to end conflict-related sexual violence - rape was used as a weapon of war in Syria, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Myanmar last year.

According to article 124 of the Brazilian Penal Code, abortion is considered a crime against life and the predicted penalty is one to three years.

Abortion is not punished only in three situations: in case of rape, risk of death for the mother or if the fetus is diagnosed with anencephaly.

"Prohibiting abortion does not reduce the number of times the procedure is performed because women will no longer accept this control over their bodies."

abcnews.go.com

Here are 8 shocking data on abortion:

1. Every two days a woman dies of unsafe abortion in Brazil. Every year, 1 million clandestine abortions occur;

2. There are 250 thousand hospitalizations in the SUS (Unified Health System) and R $ 142 million spent because of post-abortion complications.

3. One in five women under 40 have already aborted in the country, according to the National Abortion Survey, developed by Anis - Institute of Bioethics.

4. Abortion women are usually married, have children and 88% of them declare themselves Catholic, evangelical, Protestant or Spiritist.

5. About 20 million abortions are carried out worldwide in an insecure way each year, resulting in the deaths of 70,000 women, especially in poor countries and legislation restricting abortion.

6. 97% of clandestine abortions occur in developing countries. At the same time, 80% of developed countries allow the procedure.

7. A survey by the World Health Organization and the Guttmacher Institute (USA), published in 2016, showed that in countries where abortion is banned the number of procedures is not lower than in places where it is legalized.

8. In 2007, Portugal authorized abortion until 10 weeks of gestation. Ten years later, a survey by the NGO Association for Family Planning shows that the number of abortions has dropped and the deaths resulting from the practice are almost nil. In the 1970s, there were 100,000 abortions, 2% of which resulted in death, while data from 2008 shows that the country recorded 18,000 abortions, and today this number is steadily declining.

'Three in a Couple' feeds debate on new family in Sweden.

2014-11-22T18:30:00.000-02:00

Erik, Linda and Hampus lived together for two years and care for their five children. "We are a family of eight:. Mom, Dad, Dad and five children. We live in a three adult relationship, in which the three love each other"

The statement by the Swedish Linda Fridland, to a program of the TV channel TV4, created a controversy over the traditional concept of family in Sweden, the debate that has been happening in Brazil.

Linda Fridland and her husband Erik lived together for 15 years then they met Hampus Engström in 2012, in the taxi company they work for, when all three fell in love.

Linda and Erik already had four children. Hampus was the father of a three year old girl and would separate the woman shortly after.

That year, all were living together in the same house at Strömsund in northern Sweden.

"The family formed by a man, his wife and their children is still the predominant concept. But, nowadays, people are more open to the fact that there are other ways of living," says Linda.

The case of Linda and her two husbands is still, however, a taboo, even in progressive Sweden, where several boundaries were broken over the years on the traditional concept of family.

In Swedish children's literature, stories of children of gay couples - children with two fathers or two mothers, have become common.

Since 2003, gay couples have the right to adopt children and lesbians have access to state subsidies to try to get pregnant through fertility treatments.

Sweden was the first country to adopt in 1944 a law legalizing homosexuality and that continues today - in Russia, homosexual acts were legalized only between 1917 and 1930, getting banned until 1993, when they were allowed again. In 2009, the Swedish government has also legalized gay marriage.

But the notion of polygamy still faces barriers, as shown by the several pages of newspaper articles dedicated in Sweden to discuss the case of Linda, Erik and Hampus.

"What seems to bother most people is the fact that a relationship between a woman and two men, and not the opposite. It's like they think 'she is not content with one'. But it's a misconception," said Linda in an interview with the newspaper Aftonbladet.

"Texas Lawmaker Wants Constitutional ‘License To Discriminate’ Against LGBT Workers And Customers"

2014-11-21T19:37:00.000-02:00

State Sen. Donna Campbell

Texas businesses would be allowed to fire LGBT employees and turn away LGBT customers under a new proposal issued Monday by state Sen. Donna Campbell.

Campbell’s proposal would strengthen existing protections in Texas for the “right to act or refuse to act in a manner motivated by a sincerely held religious belief,” a legal maneuver that critics have described as a “license to discriminate.”

Campbell’s proposal would strengthen existing protections in Texas for the “right to act or refuse to act in a manner motivated by a sincerely held religious belief,” a legal maneuver that critics have described as a “license to discriminate.”

Her new proposal is “nearly identical” to the 2013 version, according to the Lone Star Q, which also notes that Texas already has a statute on the books that “provides strong protections for religious freedom.” Campbell’s proposal removes a key adverb from the legislative language, which a lawmaker who helped pass the existing religious freedom law says would render the protections far too expansive.

President Obama has used executive authority to provide workplace discrimination protections to federal workers and anyone employed by a business that contracts with the government, and has not provided religious carve-outs in those executive orders.

Every other day a Brazilian woman dies from an illegal abortion.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 1 million women in this country undergo clandestine abortions every year.

Silence and taboo surrounding the topic. We are against the negligence that makes us complicit in these deaths.

The investigation concludes that parts of the body of Jandira Santos were thrown to pigs and other parts were burnt.

Rio - The inquest on the death of Jandira Magdalena Santos, 27, sent to court concluded that Luciano Luis Gouvêa Pacheco, Shrek, a member of the militia of the Rio da Prata, was the man responsible for the dismemberment and burning of her body. Jandira, killed while performing an abortion on August 26, was found the next day in a burned car in Guaratiba.

Jandira was four months pregnant when she died on abortion

According to research, Shrek gave the order to take the victim's body to the site of Jorge dos Santos Pires, Gargamel, 53, in Campo Grande. There, she was hit with a shot in the head and was quartered. To complicate the identification, parts of her body were given to pigs for eating and others fired in the car. A month later, Jandira was identified by examination of DNA from the remains that were in the vehicle.

Shrek and eight other gang members are in prison.
