Barringer Research Fellowship for Teachers of American History

Offered by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the Barringer Fellowship for Teachers of American History provides individual teachers with the opportunity to research and study at Monticello and the Jefferson Library. The Fellowship will allow teachers to work on Jefferson-specific projects such as lesson plans, curricular units, resource packets, or syllabus outlines that will enhance their classroom teaching. Fellowships will be awarded to qualified elementary and secondary teachers who are employed full-time in the classroom. The grant will include $1,500, travel costs up to $1,000, up to $1,400 for lodging in a local hotel, and up to $50 per day for food. My Favorite Teacher Contest

The Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher Contest calls for students in grades 1-12 to write an essay, poem, or thank-you letter (500 words or less) that describes how a teacher has influenced their life. Participating schools will collect the essays and provide them to their local Barnes & Nobel store. Winning students will receive a certificate of recognition and be honored at their local store during a ceremony for the winning teachers.

The winning teachers will be recognized at a special event at their local Barnes & Noble and will receive a special award acknowledging their achievement. They will also receive a selection of Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classics series (for high school teachers) or a set of 5 Classic Starts series (for grades 1-8 teachers). Six regional winners will each receive a NOOK eBook Reader and a $500 Barnes & Noble gift card. The winner for the Barnes & Noble Teacher of the Year will receive $5,000 and his or her school will receive an additional $5,000. Mantis Award Program

ING Unsung Heroes Awards

ING supports K-12 educators and their schools innovative projects through the Unsung Heroes Awards. The awards are for class projects that are short on funding but long on potential. For 15 years, and with nearly $3.5 million in awarded grants, ING Unsung Heroes has proven to be an A+ program with educators. Each year, 100 educators are selected to receive $2,000 to help fund their innovative class projects. Three of those are chosen to receive the top awards of an additional $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000. Music Matters

The purpose of the Muzak Heart & Soul Foundation is to redefine and support music education. Music education, vocal or instrumental is the key component of successful music programs. Science Challenge

Pulse of the Planet encourages students to propose an original question, problem or experiment that relates to the field of study of the scientists involved. Each student or team must select one of the following fields of science: 1) Bio-Inspired Designs: propose a new tool, design or means of accomplishing something, using nature as inspiration; 2) Imagining Sports on Mars: propose a new or modified sport or game suitable for playing on Mars, keeping in mind the unique conditions that exist there; or 3) Detective Science: propose a means by which to solve a mystery using the science of forensics. Students enrolled in 3rd through 6th grade are eligible. Awards includes a week at Space Camp; an exclusive VIP tour of the San Diego Zoo; a week at a Pali Adventures Camp; microscopes; Zoobs and other science kits and toys. Space Foundation Teacher Scholarship

Space Foundation to support educators to participate in Space Across the Curriculum Courses. The courses provide teachers with a unique opportunity to earn credit for professional development or graduate credit toward a master’s degree. LEGO's Children Fund

The LEGO Children’s Fund will provide quarterly grants for programs, either in part or in total, with a special interest paid to collaborative efforts and in providing matching funds to leverage new dollars into the receiving organization. Priority consideration is given to programs that both meet their goals and are supported in volunteer time and effort by their employees. Specifically, this fund supports projects in these areas of support:

Early childhood education and development that is directly related to creativity
Technology and communication projects that advance learning opportunities

There are no restrictions on grant amounts up to the quarterly allocation. Typical awards, however are between $500 and $5,000. Grant deadlines are May 1st, July 15th, October 15th and January 15th. For more information, go to their website.

Academic Enrichment Grants

The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation offers Academic Enrichment Grants designed to develop in-class and extra-curricular programs that improve student learning. The Foundation considers proposals that foster understanding, deepen students’ knowledge, and provide opportunities to expand awareness of the world around them. The Academic Enrichment Grants provide funding for programs that nurture the intellectual, artistic and creative abilities of children from low-income households. The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation awards grants to individuals in amounts up to $10,000 per year for a maximum of three years, provided the eligibility requirements continue to be met. Maximum Award is up to $10,000 yearly. Eligibility: Employed by schools or non-profit organizations; have the background and experience to complete the project successfully; have direct and regular contact with students in grades pre-k to 12; work with students from low-income households; are willing to work in collaboration with the Foundation. Environmental Grants

The Captain Planet Foundation supports programs that promote understanding of environmental issues while focusing on hands-on involvement.
