Zoom Q8 - Video and Great Sound

When I do the Vlog for Octave Music I use the Zoom Q8. The Q8 offers High Definition video with High Resolution audio. I find that the audio is much better quality than the video, as Zoom is known for it's audio products. I have recorded everything from personal family videos, vlogs, product reviews, and even live concerts. It handles high SPL very well. I love it's light weight design and portability. Admittedly if you are looking for the absolute best picture quality, this is not the camera for you, but if you are looking for something with good video and excellent sound, this is hard to beat. It comes with an XY stereo mic, and two additional XLR inputs. You can also purchase add on mics that swap easily with the XY stereo mic.

Jake and I were able to review a couple of new guitars from Reverend Guitars. These guitars have a couple of new features from Reverend. In my opinion Music Man is making some of the finest product model guitars out there right now. Every one of their guitars is made per dealer order, these guitars are not just massed produced. Time, quality, exquisite materials make up the composition of their production models. And then, and then they do these limited edition runs of what they call, Ball Family Reserve. We just got in a gorgeous James Valentine Limited Edition BFR. Only 89 of these were made! We have number 77. It comes with a certificate of authenticity. The neck on this thing alone will leave one marveling at the detail to construction. I'm normally not a fan of gold hardware, but this gold hardware seems to fit this guitar just fine. This past Sunday I had the pleasure of going to watch and listen to our local Municipal Band. The Elkhart Municipal band has been around for many decades, and features some astounding local talent. This particular concert not only featured some local soloists, but they also tackled Aaron Copland's Rodeo Suite! They did a fabulous job, so I decide to write 5 reasons that you should attend your local community band concert.

1. It's a privilege most don't have - most communities do not have the funds or enough musicians to support a local band. If you are fortunate to have one, GO SEE IT!

2. Concerts are usually fun in nature - most local bands will feature marches and light, fun pieces. These types of music can be very entertaining and fun to watch.

3. The skill level might surprise you - some local bands will challenge themselves to more difficult pieces. You may be surprised at how talented your local musicians might be!

4. You meet people from the community - You never know who you might run into. Get out and socialize. Meet people that have similar interest as you.

5. It's Free! - Most community concerts are free - GO SEE IT!

Gatlinburg Fires

If you look at the banner picture at the top of this blog, you will see a beautiful mountain scenery. This picture was taken at a vacation home that overlooked Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort. This part of the country is one of my favorite places. I always feel renewed when visiting there. This weeks fires have been devastating to this area. Authorities are calling it one of the worst fires in 100 years. I have no idea about the fate of the home in which this picture was taken. My heart breaks for the people of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. I know they will rebuild. And I look forward to visiting again soon. However, right now I am praying for the safety of all people involved.

Cubs Win World Series - 2016

I never thought this day would happen. Not only did the Cubs make it to the World Series, but they WON! Down 3 games to 1 in the series, they won 3 games in a row. The last game being one of the most exciting in World Series history. As a life long Cubs fan, I am so happy.

Band Tool

Every so often a great product is invented. My friend Steve Allen has done so through his business Legend Musical Instruments. They have created a repair tool that all band directors should have. This multi-tool is small enough to carry, but contains enough different tools to be effective at marching or concert band contests and concerts. This tool will fix every thing from a sprung woodwind spring to a stuck brass mouthpiece. To see all the great features of this band tool watch the Youtube video below.

Legend Musical Instruments has developed a great product in the Band Tool, they also make great beginner brass mouthpieces.

New Years Workout Plan

Fall is officially here in northern Indiana. I went to mow this morning, after 20 minutes looked down, and flat tire!!! Nail was in the rear tire. So that ended that. The good news, is that I was able to just hang out with my family this morning. We made home made apple sauce and then had lunch. It is now raining and gloomy outside, but....and this is a big one.....it is Saturday!!! And that can only mean one thing COLLEGE FOOTBALL. So this afternoon I will look outside, appreciate that fall colors, and turn on the TV to watch the Notre Dame game at 3:00. Then later I will turn on the Florida game.

Ten Years From Now

One of the things I wish I would have been taught when I was young is to look ten years into the future. It seems simple enough. This year, in June, I will turn 35. When looking back on time, it seems to have flown by. Day by day it seems like we have forever, but our time is limited. This week I heard a great message by Ed Dobson. He has ALS, which is a terminal disease. But here is the thing, we all have a terminal disease. All of us have a limited amount of time. You can't look back, but you can impact your future. If you look ten years into the future, where do you want to be? What do you want to do? Who's life do you want to have impact on? The great thing is that you can take steps, intentional steps, everyday to change your life. If you do this everyday for a year, these steps will add up. Then think about where they will ten years from now. Being intentional about what we do now will keep us from looking back on life with regrets. What we do NOW directly impacts where we will be then.

What am I doing now:

So here is what I am doing NOW to affect my ten year plan. First, getting my health and fitness the best it can be so that my body can be the most productive that it can be. I never want my fitness to hold me back from doing something, never want it to be an excuse. I never want to hold back from my kids because of my level of fitness. So I have joined a fitness group where we are encouraging and holding each other accountable for good eating habits/lifestyle and exercise. Second, I am working on launching two businesses. Why two? Well why not!?! I have played music all my life, so I am creating a company that will use this creative outlet of mine. The other company will be in manufacturing, which I have been in the last 15 years. I am being vague on both of these because quite honestly I don't have all the details yet. Both companies have been ideas bouncing around in my head for a long time. It is time to move on both ideas. If they are contained as only thoughts then they add value to no one. I worked hard to get a business degree in small business and entrepreneurship, it is about time I put it into action. Third, and most importantly, I will honor God and serve Jesus the best that I can. Everyday. Serving others far outweighs anything else on this list. If someone can benefit by me spending time with them, then that is what I want. Living on purpose and being intentional is what it is all about. No regrets. No what ifs. As Ed says, "it ain't over yet".

Music Composition 101

One of my goals for this year is to start composing music again. I am basically back to a beginners level and have to relearn any music theory that I had previously learned. So what better way to learn then to start reading and writing. The piece above is my first attempt at an intro and exposition section of a piano sonata. It is a midi file so forgive the sound quality. I would love to get some feedback on what anyone thinks of it so far, even if you think it sucks. I'm sure when I am done editing and learning more it will sound different then it does now, which makes me wonder when I will ever consider any piece of music finished? Maybe I should set a deadline, that seems to take the art out of it though don't you think? Any way, take a listen and tell me what you think. Thanks.

A very happy Thanksgiving to all of you. I hope you have a great time with your family and friends. And of course eat plenty of turkey!!! I will be spending Thanksgiving with family on Thursday. Help my Dad out on Friday. Then I will spend the weekend with my wife!!! We are going to see the Chicago Symphony on Saturday night and do some shopping during the day. Have a great weekend!!!

Jacob's Foreign Language Interests

My 5-year old, Jacob, has a real interest in learning words from foreign languages. He loves to roll his "R" when saying Spanish words. Several times he will say things, that we think is gibberish, only to find out later that it is Chinese!!! He seems to be most interested in Spanish and Chinese. That being said, the other day he corrected me on the meaning of a French word!

So here is the thing. I would like to encourage him to learn new languages. Learning them at a young age has to be easier then learning them when you are older. Not only that, but it would be a huge advantage in this globalized world to be able to communicate in more than just English. If you have any ideas, methods, or recommendations on how I, best can help him to learn these languages please let me know. Comment below or on my Facebook wall. Thanks!!!

I feel it is important to give back to this world. There are people that are in desperate need. So we give to churches and charities. We volunteer our time to help others. As concerned citizens we try to give to organizations that will maximize our given dollar amounts and time. There are always moments when we find out about some need or travesty, and we feel compelled to give. But, have you ever felt the need to start your own charity? I recently read an article on Inc.com about Scott Harrison and how he started Charity: Water. It is an interesting article about how to develop a successful charity. If you go to Charity: Water's website you immediately feel how this charity is different. With video, nice aesthetics, and tools for developing fund raising campaigns you immediately feel compelled to join their cause. It is also interesting how they follow up on their projects, by posting pictures, by gps geotracking, and by blog posts. You can read the Inc.com article here:
