It’s been a long cold winter, but things are about to get a lot better because the official start of the golf season is here, it’s Masters Week!!!!!

The Somersett Men’s Golf Association (SMGA) is going to make things a bit more interesting with our annual Masters Pool.

Simple rules:

Pick 5 players for your team. Each day we'll drop your worst player’s score and your team score is the combined total of your best 4 players each day
$10 per team (Entry fee has to be at the clubhouse prior to the start of play on Thursday, $5 goes to prize fund, $5 goes to SMGA)
Sign-up by email to somersettmga@gmail.com or at the clubhouse with Stuart or Rick with the names of your five players (if you sign up by email, your money still has to be at the clubhouse prior to the start of play).
Teams and scores will be posted daily at the website: www.somersettgolfandcountryclub.com

Once the teams have been finalized, we’ll send out an email to all of the participants with all of the teams and an update each evening after play has concluded for the day.

The official (long) rules:

$10/entry ($5 goes to prize pool/$5 goes to the SMGA General Fund to be used for Men’s Club Events)

You can send in your entries via email or at the clubhouse. Entries will be accepted by email up until the first players tee off on Thursday (April 7, 2011) morning.
You can enter multiple teams, but each team costs $10.
Get your money in to the clubhouse by the start of play on Thursday (April 7, 2011) morning.

Pick 5 players for your team.

Each day, the player with the highest score for your team will be dropped and your team score will consist of the scores from your lowest 4 players.
Players that don’t make the cut will be given a score of the worst score for the day +2 strokes (Example: You pick John Daly for your team and he doesn’t make the cut. On Saturday, Colin Montgomerie (who made the cut) shoots 88 which is the worst score of the day. John Daly would then score a 90 for your team on Saturday).

If you pick someone who is not playing this week (e.g., Ben Hogan), your pick will be given a score of 90 for all four days and even if you win with four of your other players your team will be disqualified for having a stupid captain.

Payout

If we get $100 or less, then 100% of the prize money goes to the overall winner.
If we get >$100, then we’ll pay out 30% to the leader after Round 2 and 70% to the overall winner after Round 4.

Tiebreakers

1st tiebreaker: If any 4-person teams are tied after regulation, then any team (5-person) that has a player who is playing in his first Masters beats a team with no first-time participants. Also, teams with more first-time participants beat teams with less first-time participants.
2nd tiebreaker: If still tied after the 1st tiebreaker, then any team that has a pre-Tiger era (pre-1997) Masters Champion on their team beats a team that doesn’t have any pre-Tiger era (pre-1997) Masters Champions. Also, teams with more pre-Tiger era Masters Champions beat teams with less pre-Tiger era Masters Champions.
3rd tiebreaker, If still tied after the 2nd tiebreaker, the winner will be the team who has the lowest 5-person total.
If still tied after the 3rd tiebreaker, then we’ll split the pot

The tee placements for the 2010 Club Championship (August 21-22, 2010) are shown above. The Championship (gross) and 1st flight (net) will be playing off the tee yardages as shown. Stuart and the golf shop staff have the course marked with this weekends tee placements (white #1 (Saturday) and a red #2 (Sunday) ) for your practice rounds.

Participants will be placed into flights based on their handicap, but if you want to play up a flight you'll need to play to the maximum handicap for the higher flight. The 2nd (net) and 3rd (net) flights will be playing off of the Combo tees. We'll have the tee times posted to the website by Friday.

If you haven't signed up yet, call the golf shop (787-1800 x2) and sign up by Wednesday, August 18.

Ready to put your game to the test at the Club Championship?

The 2010 Club Championship takes place on August 21-22, 2010. The cost is $70 and includes awards and credit book for the winners. Sign-up at the clubhouse (or call 787-1800 x2) by Wednesday, August 19, 2010. Tee times will run from 7:30-9:30 am and will be posted to the website by Friday, August 20, 2010.

This year we will be offering one Gross (Championship Flight) and three Net (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Flights) Divisions. The Gross and 1st Flight will play off a new set of back tees (stay tuned for more details on the challenging tee placements). The 2010 Club Champion will be eligible to play with Stuart at the Pro-Club Champion event in the Spring of 2011.

Beat the Pros

Ever wonder how well a pro would do playing our course under Championship conditions? This year, the SMGA has convinced Stuart and Rick to put their games against ours. Wager $20 and if your 2-day net total beats the total of Stuart's gross score on Saturday and Rick's gross score on Sunday, you'll win $40 in club credit. Even if you don't beat the pros, you'll still get $20 in club credit, so you don't have anything to lose.

2010 Comstock Cup (Men's Member-Guest Invitational) - July 29-31, 2010

On June 8, 1859, the first major discovery of silver and gold ore in the US was made under what is now Virginia City, Nevada. This discovery was named the "Comstock Lode" and in its peak production year of 1877, produced over $14,000,000 of gold and $21,000,000 of silver ($270 million and $400 million adjusted for inflation as of 2007). Nevada became known as the "Silver State" primarily because of the silver found in the Comstock Lode.

As we continue to build our club traditions, the SMGA board has been searching for a suitable theme for our Men's Member-Guest tournament and we have agreed to name the 2010 tournament the "Comstock Cup" in honor of our Nevada heritage. Each of the past tournaments have been great events, but this year, with the support and participation of the SMGA, we plan to have our best event ever.

The event costs $675/team. We realize that in this difficult economic environment that it's important to maximize the value of your entry fee, so here's what you can expect to get for your money:
