Just to add some perspective, Ubuntu boots up in 36s when you use Unity as the desktop shell.








Even Unity 2D can't beat that. With Unity 2D as the default desktop shell, I'm getting a 43s boot up.

Ubuntu System Compositor

A new framework(?) that lets the Ubuntu developers control the display from bootloader all the way to desktop. This is a good thing when it finally comes to fruition. - btrfs performance improvements &amp; better error handling. We're stepping closer to btrfs as the default filesystem.
- more GPU drivers. Of course, I'm particularly interested in the Radeon 7xxx &amp; Trinity APU support.
- new x32 ABI for 64-bit mode with 32-bit pointers. Coincidence? Boot time is 29s. I hope this keeps up.

A good enough GPU coupled with a good CPU all in one package. I'll certainly want a Trinity-based notebook.

Just check out the various reviews on all the major sites. Be it Anandtech, Tom's Hardware, or Techspot the result's the same. Not happening</title><summary type="text">If you check out the list of blueprints for Quantal Quetzal, you'll notice there's a blueprint for text free boot. This is just another step in the long road Ubuntu has been on for a long time now.

You don't have to look far to find a similar blueprint for an earlier Ubuntu version. It's high time we finally reached the goal of a text free boot.

Looking closely, it seems that bootchart is still counting time even 
after you've reached the desktop. So you get to see processes like 
Firefox or Transmission in the bootchart if you tend to run stuff just

Should I be glad?




Although boot times don't look as awesome as they could be, the Ubuntu 12.04 desktop running with Gnome Shell 3.4 is snappy. Boot times doesn't mean poor desktop performance.
